My name is Mason Howell, and my journey into nonprofit work began in the spring of 2015 when I toured the Shepherd Center Rehabilitation Hospital in Atlanta. I had the privilege of touring the facility with Dean Melcher from the Shepherd Center Foundation and later met Travis Ellis, cofounder of Shepherd’s Men. Seeing firsthand the incredible work they were doing to support veterans in need, I knew I wanted to help.
Later that year, with the support of my employer, White Cap Construction Supply, I organized our first charity golf tournament. Thanks to the generosity of White Cap’s vendor community, local businesses, and dedicated participants, this tournament has grown into an annual tradition. Over the past nine years, we have raised more than $325,000, with 100% of the net proceeds going to Shepherd’s Men, who, in turn, donate every dollar directly to the SHARE Military Initiative—a program dedicated to helping veterans recover from traumatic brain injuries and post-traumatic stress.
As this journey evolved, it became clear that forming a nonprofit was the next step. With the full support of my family as board members, MDH Charitable Foundation Inc. was created to continue our annual golf tournament while also expanding our reach. Now, in addition to supporting
Saving Lives Raising Awareness

Shepherd’s Men, we proudly raise funds for other incredible organizations: Purple Heart Homes and Project 2 Heal—each dedicated to improving the lives of veterans and first responders. Through fundraising events, raffles, and community-driven initiatives, we are committed to making a lasting impact on those who have sacrificed so much for us. This mission is personal, and with

the support of our community, we look forward to growing our efforts and helping even more heroes in the years to come.
The Evolution of Shepherd’s Men
When Troy Campbell and Travis Ellis first met in 2012, neither could have predicted the movement they were about to launch.
One was a Marine stationed near Atlanta, the other a businessman and community leader. Their paths crossed through the Cobb County Chamber of Commerce’s Honorary Commanders program, which pairs military leaders with local business and political figures to foster understanding of national defense and its impact on the community.
Ellis said the program changed him.
“We can fly people on aircraft, we can get them on Navy ships, but the greatest asset we have is the men and women who wear the uniform. I wanted leaders to see that firsthand.”
The two quickly became friends, bonded by fitness, service, and a shared drive to live with purpose. That friendship soon evolved into a mission.
Through the program, Campbell and Ellis visited the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, home to the SHARE Military Initiative. SHARE provides worldclass rehabilitation for service members with traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Mason Howell and his wife
Travis Ellis and Troy Campbell

“I was blown away,” Campbell said. “Hearing directly from clients and seeing the impact–it was life-changing.”
For Ellis, it hit even closer to home. A close friend went through SHARE.
“He told me this program saved his life. Without it, he wouldn’t be here. That was all I needed to hear.”
Both men were already active in endurance events and saw an opportunity to combine fitness with advocacy. They launched Shepherd’s Men, a volunteer group committed to raising awareness and funds for SHARE.
Their first challenge: a run from Atlanta to the Marine Corps Memorial in Washington, D.C. Along the way, they stopped at firehouses, VFW halls, and American Legion posts, spreading the word about SHARE and encouraging veterans to seek help.
“Our goal was simple,” Campbell said. “We wanted veterans to know: If you’re struggling, there’s a place in Atlanta saving lives.”
For Ellis, Shepherd’s Men also filled a gap. With a family lineage of military service dating back to the French and Indian War, not serving himself had always weighed on him.

“Meeting Troy was part of a divine plan,” Ellis said. “Shepherd’s Men gave me a way to serve–by building awareness, raising resources, and tearing down the stigma around mental health care.”
Since 2014, Shepherd’s Men has raised more than $12.5 million for SHARE–all through volunteerled efforts. Just as important, their message has helped break down the barriers that prevent veterans from seeking care.
Now in its second decade, Shepherd’s Men continues to expand its voice. Their mission is focused on TBI–the signature but often overlooked injury of post-9/11 wars. SHARE remains one of the few programs in the country offering comprehensive treatment at no cost to veterans or their families.
“What’s next is figuring out how to reach even more veterans,” Ellis said. “If you’re struggling, please know that you don’t have to fight this alone. There is a place that can help.”

Chef Adam Alberson
Adam was born in Alpharetta, Georgia and grew up in Hickory Flat, Georgia learning to cook the classic southern dishes from his mother and grandmother. His dad showed him the ropes of grilling and smoking, which quickly became Adam’s passion. He started his professional cooking career at age 16, working at one point here in Bent Tree. For the past 18 years he has worked in various positions growing into leadership roles starting as a general manager of a local pizza chain. He moved on to Il Fornos Bistro in Ellijay, Georgia where he become the head chef for three years and then onto White Columns Country Club in Milton, Georgia.
He returned to Bent Tree in August of 2024 as head chef and is now the general manager of the Tavern at the 19th Hole, helping
to create a true family-oriented kitchen both in menu and with the staff. Everyone that works at the 19th Hole sees their coworkers as family with lots of affection and camaraderie as they do their best to make sure every guest also feels like family. Adam encourages all his staff to learn as many names of the Bent Tree members that frequent the restaurant so as to ensure that family feel.
Adam, of course, likes to cook but also enjoys fishing and getting out onto the golf course. He is active with the Men’s Golf Association here in Bent Tree and participates in as many Thursday Night Scrambles as he can. This allows him to not only refine his golf game but cultivate relationships with the many members that reside in Bent Tree. Learn more about Bent Tree at www.bent-tree.com

What is your favorite sport to play? Despite being 5’10, the only sport I ever did was competition cheerleading when I was 11. I was tall for my age so they put me with the older girls. I only recently started getting into golf after becoming a cart girl.
Do you enjoy playing golf? I enjoy playing golf when I actually make contact with the ball, but I usually only play to see the cart girl.
What is your favorite part of being a cart girl? What is your least favorite part? My favorite part of being a cart girl is the different kinds of people you get to meet; I once met Scott Phillips from Creed! My least favorite part is the slow, hot days.
If you weren’t a cart girl, what would you be doing? Once I finish my Nursing degree, my goal is to open up a medspa and help make people feel good about themselves.
What is the funniest thing you’ve ever seen on the golf course? We had a bunch of firefighters here and all of the new people had to wear a costume. I saw a lot of men in skirts and crop tops that day.
What type of music do you prefer and who is your current favorite artist? I love all different types of music ranging from EDM to rap, to country. My current favorite artist is Morgan Wallen, I saw him front row in Tampa and I just went to his concert in Miami.
What hobbies do you enjoy? I love cars, cooking and baking. (And occasionally playing golf)
What is a fun fact about you? In Paterson, NJ, there’s actually a park named Federici Park. It’s dedicated to my 3x great-grandfather, who emigrated from Italy and became a sculptor! Some of his work is still on display at the town hall.

Ethereal Ambience in the Georgia Mountains
By Bob Bolton
I can’t remember the last time I used the word, “ethereal”, and I had to use my favorite dictionary resource, Google, to make sure I was using it correctly for the title of this article, and as importantly, to check the spelling. For those, like me, who aren’t sure of the definition, as an adjective it means – “extremely delicate and light in a way that seems too perfect for this world”.
The Brasstown Valley Resort and Spa is one of Georgia’s mountain gems, and is located less than two hours from Atlanta, Asheville, Chattanooga, and less than three hours from Knoxville. The drive to the resort from any direction, is a beautiful cruise through a variety of mountain ranges.
The golf course at Brasstown Valley Resort & Spa offers 18 holes of Scottish-links style championship golf, in the heart of North Georgia’s Blue Ridge

Mountains. Denis Griffiths’ design of the course takes advantage of the existing terrain, while blending in the site’s natural character. Pictures and video provide only a glimpse into the natural aesthetics of the course, and until you stand on the first tee, you can’t fathom the impact of the topographic treat that awaits.
The par 72 course is split into 37 on the front, and 35 on the back. The front nine starts with a dramatic drop from the tee box to an inclined, and elevated fairway, that makes a solid drive look like it could go on forever, until it hits the face of the fairway.
Each hole seems to have been designed to provide you with a combination of natural
aesthetic views of nature, and the mountains, while providing a challenging, but fair lay-out for golfers of all skill levels. The front nine has several holes that take you to elevated tee boxes, or greens, with plenty of undulation in the fairways in-between.
The first time water comes into play is on the relatively short par 4, 3rd. Water runs down the right side of the fairway from just off the tee to the green. The left side of the fairway is dotted with a couple of sand traps that visually “pinch” the fairway. I decided to try my luck and hit driver, and was fortunate to nestle it up just right of the farthest bunker, allowing for an easy iron into the green, and a two-putt par.
One of only two bogies on the front, came at the #1 handicap, par 5, 4th hole. A slight dogleg right, that creeps up the mountain side, saw me hit a well-placed drive, and a 3 wood that left me

with an 8-iron going in. After a slight “chunk”, I hit an ok wedge, but two-putted for a 6.
The back nine is another cruise through nature, with mountains as a 360-degree backdrop. The par 5 11th is a risk/reward hole. I should’ve taken the risk but instead was rewarded with a painful double-bogie. The par 3 14th is a beautiful, rather short par 3 that has a carry over water, an elevated green, and traps that buffer the front of the green. My playing partner hit an awesome shot to within 4 feet and made the birdie.
The variety of tee boxes, from the Red 5028 yards, to the Gold 7047, provides ample choices for every skill level to find a comfortable, but challenging length to enjoy this well-maintained, and aesthetically pleasing golf destination.
I look forward to coming back and enjoying the amenities of the Resort and Spa. The mountainside lodge and cottages are a great
retreat for a romantic get-away, a family vacation, or a corporate meeting event. With horse trail rides, archery, and axe throwing, to the Equani Spa – where you can refresh your body, mind, and soul
- the memories of this mountain destination will last forever.

Where were you born? Did you grow up there?
Daniel M. Jarvis
something that matches both discipline and style.
Steak, chicken, or seafood? Steak cooked right. Nothing beats it. Medium rare, preferably Prime Rib, secondary is Ribeye. I am a true carnivore!
Tell us something about yourself that only your closest friends know. Even through my combat experience and tough exterior, I carry a deep compassion for people. My mission is rooted in love—helping others find hope and freedom. That’s my jam! I am an empath.
What three things would you need to survive on a deserted island? A Bible, a knife, and fire starter.
Who would you like to have with you on the same deserted island; and why? Maze, my service dog. She’s loyal, calming, and a reminder of why I keep moving forward. After all I am her service human. She lost her first Navy veteran to suicide. I picked her up at Jared’s funeral, and for three days she wouldn’t eat or drink. I understood her pain firsthand. We get each other.

I was born in Mobile, Alabama to my dad, Navy Chief Larry Jarvis and mom, Bonnie. Yes, it’s true, I was a Navy Brat. I joined the Army at 17 as an act of rebellion. Unfortunately, my dad took it way better than I hoped he would. I grew up mostly in Florida after dad retired from the Navy. My mom passed while I was in Afghanistan in my final weeks in February 2012. It was the event that sent me over the top. Dad passed in 2019. My roots are deep here, and so is my commitment to service, both in the military and in law enforcement as a former Polk County Deputy Sheriff. Yes, Grady was my boss, he’s a legend here but I wish he cared more about mental health for his deputies.
What do you do for a living? I’m the founder of Healing the Hero and Tactical Resiliency USA (TRUSA). I lead programs that bring life-changing healing to veterans, first responders, and their families through the Trauma Resiliency Protocol–Peer Rescue, a process I invented and hold as patent pending. Healing the Hero is a nonprofit. All treatment is zero cost to the hero and their families. TRUSA is a training and consulting company. I’ll take government money all day long, just not hero money. Besides it’s the best use of tax dollars ever.
Aside from golf, what do you prefer for fun and relaxation? I love time with my service dog, Maze, diving into the Bible, spending time outdoors, and connecting with people through storytelling, whether in podcasts, writing, or just around the fire.
What golf apparel do you like to wear? Classic, clean, and comfortable. Black, gold, or military-inspired colors—
Name the three most important things to you in this world. Faith, family, and mission.
What do you fear the most? Failing to fulfill the mission God gave me, healing the masses.
What three people would you most like to play with in your fantasy golf foursome? Tiger Woods, because his dad was a Green Beret, Jesus Christ, and Marcus Luttrell, the Lone Survivor.

What are some of your great accomplishments? Earning the Bronze Star Medal for my service in Iraq in 20062007 as an Infantry Squad Leader. Founding Healing

the Hero USA and Tactical Resiliency USA. Inventing the TRP–Peer Rescue Protocol. Most importantly— helping countless veterans and first responders reclaim their lives from PTSD, depression, and anxiety.
Last time you spewed something through your nose from laughing so hard? Not long ago—laughing with fellow veterans swapping stories only we can truly laugh about. Everyone else would get offended.
Favorite comedian? Robin Williams—he’s classic and timeless. I only wish I could have helped him somehow. I’ll never forget his USO tour in Iraq when the flag was going down and all the Soldiers stopped, executed an about face in the middle of his skit and saluted. In that moment he realized what patriotism truly meant.
Favorite charity to support? Healing the Hero USA (www.healingthehero.org)—it’s more than a charity, it’s a calling. I am biased for sure, but if you saw what we saw daily, it would shock you. Healing is real and the men and women who fight for us and defend us deserve it, and all those that support them.
What else would you like for us to know about you? I’m a combat veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, a Purple Heart recipient what we refer to as the enemy marksmanship badge, and a man on a mission to help others heal. My purpose is to be a Christ-centered catalyst, bringing hope to the broken and creating a movement that shifts how the world sees and treats trauma.

national acclaim. In 2024, the property was named to TIME’s list of the World’s Greatest Places. The property is the epicenter of horse activity during shows, featuring 45 weeks of competition throughout the year. However, the property also welcomes individual resort guests, conventions, meetings and social events. Highlights of the busy Event Calendar include the Ocala Food and Wine Festival in early November and Winter Wonderland, featuring more than one million dazzling lights and holiday displays (November through Christmas). And, rooms are available at surprisingly affordable rates, considering the quality of accommodations and hospitality. High-time rates reach around $499 for a deluxe room, but through much of the year rates dip to around $299 for king or two queen rooms. Currently, the two hotels include:
• The Equestrian Hotel overlooks the Grand Outdoor Arena and
One of the best things about golf is that there is a world of exciting courses just waiting to be played. Unfortunately, many of those courses are private and getting the key to open the door to even one of them can be a difficult task.
For most of those clubs, membership is needed to play the course. Nonmembers need not apply.
Tucked away in the rolling landscape of Central Florida is one such course, Golden Ocala Golf & Equestrian Club. Golden Ocala is a private club, long recognized as one of the most well-regarded courses in the country.
Access remains limited to members, but through an exclusive agreement, guests staying at the nearby World Equestrian Center may be able to experience the course during their stay, depending on availability. It is a unique benefit of staying at WEC’s hotels, offering travelers a chance to enjoy championship-level golf in an extraordinary setting.
The World Equestrian Center is the largest equestrian center in the United States. More important, it is a leading resort destination
that blends elite equestrian competition with luxury hospitality … and, now with golf. Set on more than 2,000 acres in the heart of Ocala’s rolling horse country, WEC offers two hotels, multiple dining venues and even an RV park. Opened in 2020, it didn’t take long to generate

has 248 luxurious guestrooms, designed with equine influences, and includes the Calluna Spa. It features three major restaurants – Stirrups, for fine dining, Emma’s Patisserie for European-inspired pastries and a favorite of many visitors, The Yellow Pony, designed after an upscale Irish Pub.
• The Riding Academy Hotel adds another 394 studios and suites that are pet-friendly and ideal for families and groups. A popular family attraction is the outdoor swimming pool and splash pad.
Opening soon, Equestrian Manor, will add four more distinct dining options to the property, along with traditional meeting space. In 2026, The Shoppes Off 80 th will open adjacent to The Equestrian Manor, doubling the property’s existing retail offerings with an additional 28 new units.
But the key for traveling golfers is the golf access to Golden Ocala Golf & Equestrian Club, provided by World Equestrian Center, depending on availability. Guests at WEC hotels can book a round of golf at the course.
The opportunity to play the world class course, designed by acclaimed architect Ron Garl, is an irresistible option. When opened in 1986, it was the first course to include eight tribute holes modeled after some of the most famous golf holes in the world. The holes that are patterned after Augusta’s Amen Corner brought immediate renown to the course.
In 2018 the course was renovated by Garl, including modernization of the bunkers and an upgrade of turfgrass conditions.
In 2023 nine new holes were added, including four more replica holes. Among the most famous are Hole Number One – a tribute

to the famous Church Pew holes at Oakmont GC – and Hole Number Two – a tribute to the famous par 5 hole at Bethpage Black.
“We decided to go with a mix of tribute holes and original designs, just as we did on the first 18-hole course at Golden Ocala,” explains Garl. “When designing the holes we discovered that we had the exact same elevation for the second hole as they do on the famous par 5 hole at Bethpage Black. That made perfect sense to do the tribute. It will be great fun for anyone to play it this year, while the Ryder Cup is being played at Bethpage Black.”
While staying in Ocala, there are also a number of other golf options for visitors.
At the top of the list is Juliette Falls, an upscale daily fee course designed by John Sanford. It opened in 2007 and has evolved into a gated community with affordable housing.
Juliette Falls quickly became known as one of the best daily fee courses in Florida, ranked in the Top 10 by GolfAdvisor. Maintained in excellent condition, it is a collection of 18 interesting and unique golf holes.
There are two major waterfalls on the course that add a backdrop
of spectacular beauty. In addition, there is plenty of other “eye-candy” on the course. Hole No. 12 features a large ravine that golfers must play across. Hole 14 is a par five that stretches to almost 600 yards and every inch from tee to green is visible, adding an aura of grandeur.
The clubhouse also features a lively sports bar and restaurant that is a perfect after-golf hangout. Best part about Juliette Falls – green fees are extremely reasonable, in the $80 to $90 range for much of the year.
Throughout the Ocala area, there are a number of other daily fee courses that can be played during a visit to the World Equestrian Center. Although, not of the quality of Juliette Falls, they feature design work by some of America’s great architects. Most notable is Ocala National GC, designed by Rees Jones and host to a number of statewide tournaments over the years.

Robitaille’s
Chief Designer Role to Lead Brand Strategy

Swing Control, a leader in fashion-forward golf and lifestyle apparel, has expanded the scope of veteran designer Nancy Robitaille’s role to include Brand Manager. In this new dual capacity, Robitaille will continue to lead the creative direction while taking on broader responsibilities for the brand’s strategic growth and development.

Since joining the company in 2023 as Lead Designer, Robitaille has infused Swing Control collections with her signature blend of polish, performance, and modern femininity. Her designs have been widely embraced by retailers and golfers alike, helping to position the brand as a go-to for stylish, on-course apparel that transitions effortlessly beyond the green.
Now taking on a broader leadership role, Robitaille will oversee the full vision of the brand, guiding everything from trend forecasting and product design to merchandising and customer experience. Her early background in sales brings a valuable commercial lens to her creative work, helping connect the design process with the needs of today’s consumer.
“It’s an incredible honor to step into this role with a brand that reflects my core design values,” said Nancy Robitaille. “Swing Control is about more than apparel. It’s about empowering women to feel confident and look sophisticated, whether they’re on the course or out for the day. I’m excited to help shape the brand’s next chapter.”
Before joining Swing Control, Robitaille spent over a decade as the Head Designer at Fila Golf Sportswear for Fersten Worldwide. Under Robitaille’s creative direction, Swing Control has already gained significant momentum,
with recent collections praised for their refined aesthetic, flattering silhouettes, and versatility on and off the course. Her ability to blend timeless styling with modern sensibilities has helped position the brand as a trusted favorite among golfers who value both performance and polish.

Myth or Mystery Feel the Spirit of the Land Vernon, British Columbia
By Dave Finn
Canadian folklore suggests that Ogopogo is the lake monster that inhabits Okanagan Lake in British Columbia, Canada. As with Scotland’s Loch Ness Monster, there have been numerous reports
of sightings over the last century; however, none have been proven.
According to the Indigenous Syilx/Okanagan People, Ogopogo is believed to be a spirit which can take on the form of an aquatic

serpent. A sacred creature that serves as a reminder to take care of the water, the land, and the environment. Ogopogo is also symbolic of how people work, live and play in Vernon and brings an intense sense of pride to all who live here.
Vernon is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream, where you can bike, hike, snowshoe, downhill or cross-country ski, zipline, rock climb, boat, or camp in one of Canada’s most picturesque destinations. Several excellent courses will also test your golf skills. Here are five that I have played.
My personal favourite is the Predator Ridge Resort that offers a multitude of accommodation options to complement two of the best golf courses in Canada and a state-of-the-art practice facility.
Predator Ridge – Ridge Course
Predator Ridge - Predator Course 6th Tee

The Ridge Course is a spectacular mountain design with huge elevation changes. Every tee shot seems to start from a plateau offering numerous photo opportunities. The fairways are well tree-lined, with mounds resembling a stadium, allowing for errant shots to funnel back to the short stuff.
Opened in 2009, this Doug Carrick design is visually stunning, with large, fast greens and consistent white silica sand bunkers. Certainly, worthy of being ranked #33 in the Top 100 Golf Courses in Canada by ScoreGolf Magazine. The original Predator Course opened in 1991 and looks sublime
in comparison to its’ younger sibling, but do not be fooled by first impressions. This Les Ferber layout offers a unique blend of parkland, mountain, and linksstyle designs in one truly unique experience. The front nine is more dramatic and very picturesque, but the back nine will prove to be

more difficult. The greens are in perfect condition, and the overall design certainly makes it worthy of being in the Top 100 Golf Courses.

at The Rise Resort
Impressive would be an understatement as I climbed over 1,000 feet to a plateau overlooking Okanagan Lake. It allowed me to witness spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding valley. Carved out of a mountainside, this is one of only two Fred Couples Signature Courses built so far in Canada. There are seven different tee block options on this par-72 course that range from 4407 yards to 6843 yards, so it is playable for golfers of all skill levels. However, with a slope of 137 and a course rating of 72.8, you will need to bring out the ‘Boom Boom’ in your game
if you attempt this course from the tips. The Rise may be one of the most unique mountain designs that you will ever experience, with 12 different lakeside views.
Vernon Golf & Country Club has been around since 1913, but it moved in 1920 to a property that is divided by the Okanagan Valley Railroad and Vernon Creek. The mature weeping willows, giant columnar Lombardy poplar trees, and terraced fairways make this parkland course feel like you could be playing golf in the Italian Tuscany countryside.
Spallumcheen Golf & Country Club is situated in a relatively flat valley surrounded by the breathtaking Rocky Mountains. This unpretentious par-71 course is tight and well treelined, with water evident on 12 holes and the 60 bunkers will
test your accuracy. There are few elevation changes, but the tight fairways will prevent you from reaching for your driver on every hole. They also have a 9-hole executive par-34 that will surely test every club in your bag.
Located 30 to 40 minutes from the Kelowna International Airport, Vernon, with a population of around 45,000, is a tight-knit community where you can experience smalltown charm, explore a vibrant downtown and enjoy sensational farm-to-table fare all year long.
Known for its mild winters, Vernon gets an average of 301 days of sunshine annually, allowing more time to golf and immerse oneself in the spirit of the land. Who knows, you may be the first to prove that Ogopogo is more than a myth.

Savannah: One of America's Oldest & Historic Cities
By Mike May

If you enjoy ‘live’ music, visiting historic sites, and devouring delectable appetizers, entrees, and desserts, then Savannah, Georgia is a perfect vacation destination for you and your family for a few days, a long weekend, or for an entire week or more. Truth be told, Savannah is such an alluring and all-inclusive destination that many people who have visited Savannah have actually decided to move there.
“The ongoing appeal of the City of Savannah as a vacation destination is what keeps people

coming back to Savannah year after year,” says Doug Hollandsworth, founder, Georgia Golf Trail. “Very few cities in the U.S. are like Savannah, which have some of the best restaurants in the country as well many historic sites to see, dating back to the days of Colonial America. Savannah has also become a popular venue for the filming of movies.”
Sites To See: Savannah’s pedestrian-friendly layout enhances the appeal of the city’s many attractions -- Southern cuisine restaurants, riverboat cruises along the Savannah River, architectural tours, spectacular art galleries, Civil War re-enactments, and the Savannah Historic Theatre,

Riverboat Cruises are popular
Oak Trees Dripping with Spanish Moss
Fiddler's Crab House Restaurant
which was established in 1818. Of course, any visit to Savannah would be incomplete without a stroll along River Street or a visit to the Historic District of Savannah, which is the home of the City Market. Both River Street and the City Market are filled with antique shops, classy boutiques, fabulous restaurants, unique nightspots, and locally owned and operated inns, hotels, and B & B’s. The City Market is located in a four-block area downtown and is in the heart of Savannah’s entertainment district. Every night in Savannah, visitors will find a live, local band or two producing toe-tappin’ sounds.
Top Restaurant Choices: The beignets at Huey’s On The River (www.hueysontheriver.net) are as delicious as the ones that you’ll find in New Orleans and the Bloody Mary’s served at Huey’s On the River are second-to-none in Savannah. Fiddler’s Crab House restaurant is another popular seafood dining destination in Savannah.
Seaside Strolls: If you want to enjoy time at the beach while in Savannah, nearby Tybee Island is your best option. Officially known as Savannah’s Beach, Tybee Island has five miles of public beach along

the Atlantic Ocean. If you spend the night on Tybee Island and want to see a brilliant sunrise, a great overnight option is the Hotel Tybee (www.hoteltybee.com).
Luxury Accommodations: A state-of-the-art and convenient place to spend the night is the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa. If you stay at the Westin, you’ll also receive complimentary water ferry service to River Street.
Spooky Sites and Scenes: If you are searching for a unique experience, I highly recommend one of the many midnight ghost and gravestone tours through Savannah. It will give you a chance to see first-hand why Savannah has the reputation of being the number-one rated haunted place in the U.S. While booking your trip to Savannah, check out Visit Savannah’s website –www.visitsavannah.com -- where you’ll find more things to do and enjoy while in Georgia’s oldest and most historic city.

Champion Hills Club Reopens All 18 Holes, Debuts Clubhouse Expansion and Pickleball Courts
Champion Hills Club, Western North Carolina’s premier golf community, is heading into the heart of summer riding a wave of momentum. At the center of the excitement is the acclaimed Tom Fazio-designed golf course, which has reopened and is playing better than ever. Meanwhile, the club has invested in two projects that promise to further elevate its already exceptional lifestyle experience.
“From the very beginning, 2025 was going to be a big year for us,” said the club’s Board President Milan Turk Jr. “We had major plans in place before Hurricane Helene, which created unexpected challenges for the entire region, but we never stopped moving forward. Now, it’s full speed ahead.”
A Mountain Masterpiece, Renewed
Champion Hills’ beloved Tom Fazio layout, widely regarded as one of the architect’s finest designs, returned to full play in May with the completion of the 18th hole, following a phased reopening in the wake of Hurricane Helene.
The result? A layout that retains its signature charm while boasting enhanced beauty and playability.
“Repairs to streambanks and hillside paths have made the course safer and, in many places, even more visually stunning,” said Turk. “Holes 15 and 16, in particular, are absolutely breathtaking now,
more dramatic, more photogenic, and every bit as playable.”
In true Champion Hills Club fashion, the improvements were guided by Fazio’s design team, some of whom helped build the course more than 30 years ago. “That continuity was invaluable,” Turk noted. “They understood both the terrain and the original vision, which helped us emerge from the work with something really special.”
An Expanded Clubhouse Patio offers the Best Seat in the House
The club also unveiled a significantly expanded patio space at the clubhouse, the heartbeat of the club’s thriving social scene.
Featuring more comfortable seating, improved sightlines, updated railings, and enhanced shade structures, the expanded patio space offers members the perfect place to gather, dine, and enjoy Champion Hills’ famous mountain sunsets.
“We’ve added about 30 percent more square footage, and it’s made a huge difference,” Turk said. “Every social event now has a patio component. The views are unbeatable, and the fire pit has become a natural place for people to linger, toast and share stories.”
Pickleball Joins the Party
Champion Hills Club also opened three brand-new pickleball courts in July, adding a dynamic new layer to the club’s recreational offerings.
With more than 25 percent of the club’s members already

participating in pickleball, the addition was both memberdriven and future-focused.
Champion Hills Club has also brought in a full-time pickleball professional to oversee lessons, leagues, and lively social play.
“Pickleball is incredibly popular because it’s competitive and fun, but it’s also one of the most social sports around,” Turk said. “It fits perfectly with who we are as a club: active, engaged, and community-minded.”
The Sweet Spot of Mountain Living
The vibrance of Champion Hills Club is about more than facilities. It’s a way of life that combines natural beauty, premier golf, and a thriving, close-knit community.
“We’re sitting at 2,500 feet elevation, which means cooler

air, long-range views, and yearround golf,” he said. “It’s an unbeatable mix of comfort and beauty, and 2025 is shaping up to be one of our best years yet.”
For those considering a mountain club lifestyle, Champion Hills Club is sending a clear message: Western North Carolina is open, and this community is thriving.
“Come visit us,” Turk said.
“We’ve invested in the experience. The golf is spectacular, the sunsets are unforgettable, and the welcome mat is out.”

Dialed Golf Brings Elevated Style to the Course

Golf has always been a game of precision, patience, and personal expression. Yet for years, golf fashion has lived in a narrow lane: polos, pleated pants, and performance fabrics that often-prioritized tradition over individuality. That’s where Dialed, the new golf apparel brand launched by influencer and athlete Grace Charis, is rewriting the rules. Dialed was born from the idea that golf apparel could be equal parts performance-driven and stylish, without sacrificing the personality of the player. Grace, who has built a massive following by sharing her journey as both a golfer and lifestyle creator, noticed

neutrals, white, navy, black, with unexpected pops of color that add edge without overwhelming.
a gap in the industry. “I wanted clothes that I could wear on the course and still feel confident in if I grabbed lunch afterward,” she says. “Dialed is about blending functionality with fashion so that golf feels less rigid and more reflective of today’s culture.”
The brand’s first collection embodies that ethos. Clean lines, tailored fits, and modern textures run through the lineup, offering pieces that move with the athlete but also catch the eye. Think slim-cut performance trousers, reimagined skorts with subtle details, and tops that balance technical fabrics with flattering silhouettes. The palette is a mix of timeless
What sets Dialed apart is its ability to tap into the lifestyle side of golf. For years, golf apparel has struggled to keep pace with how the sport is being consumed. Younger audiences are watching tournaments on TikTok, players are wearing sneakers on the course, and celebrities are joining scrambles as much for the vibes as the leaderboard. Dialed leans into this cultural shift, offering pieces that are versatile enough for a competitive round, a driving range session, or a social event afterward.
“Golf is having a moment with Gen Z and Millennials,” Grace explains. “It’s becoming more inclusive, more fun, and less about just following the rules. Dialed wants to reflect that, whether you’re shooting under par or just out there to enjoy the game.”
The brand’s name itself, Dialed, comes from a phrase golfers use when everything is locked in, your swing, your putt, your mindset. It’s about confidence, readiness, and being fully in tune. That energy flows through the

collection and the community the brand is already building.
Early reception has been strong. Influencers and young professionals alike have posted about their first Dialed pieces, praising both the fit and the flexibility to wear them beyond the course. The brand’s drop-style releases mirror streetwear strategy, creating excitement and scarcity that speaks to a culture used to sneaker launches and capsule collections.
Most importantly, Dialed represents a bridge: between old-school golf elegance and newschool personal style. For a sport often viewed as slow to evolve, the brand is offering a fresh, fashion-forward perspective.
As Grace puts it, “Golf should feel cool. Golf should feel like you. With Dialed, we want people to feel both part of the game’s tradition and part of where it’s headed.”
For golfers looking to step onto the green with confidence and a touch of edge, Dialed might just be the wardrobe reset they’ve been waiting for.

How my Dad and Lifelong Golf Pal Passing Away Led Me to Drive for a Food Delivery Service
By Paul Kiska

My dad and I were watching golf on TV, when he quietly passed away. He was 89 years old. A long beautiful life, unlike my mom who passed from cancer at just 47. My dad and I golfed together since I was eight years old. Not long after he died, my daughter moved away to college, and my wife travels often for work. So much at once, I felt pretty lonely at times. My friends meant well, but I wasn’t ready to hit the golf course with them, and hitting a bar with them didn’t wash away the loneliness, yet. During the day, I worked from home, but nights were too quiet. A neighbor likes to stay busy, and make extra money as a driver for a popular food delivery service. I said why not me. I liked it. I delivered food, and listened to music. Soon, my mind was occupied, and my loneliness slipped away, plus I used the extra money for golf, and concerts.
THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY
Like playing golf, the learning never stops. That’s the same
with delivering food. Every night something different happened. I learned a lot about people.
BEHIND THE SCENES STORIES, AND CLOSE ENCOUNTERS
Here’s a behind the scenes look at the good, the bad, and the ugly of my side hustle. Most of it was really good. Some moments were touching, some were scary.
It was late on an October night, and as I drove down dimly lit streets past vacant houses, GPS showed I was at the house where the food was to be delivered. The nearby abandoned factory once brought this neighborhood in Cleveland good jobs, but when it shut down, hard times moved in, many people moved out. The homeowner's house was in need of repairs, and the car in the driveway appeared to be broken down with the hood open. As I walked up the front steps onto the wooden porch, I heard a child say, "Daddy, my chicken nuggets are here." A dad opened the screen door holding his little girl. I handed him his order, and he
said thank you. I noticed the large tip on my app, and said thanks for your generosity. He glanced at his car and said, “I deliver food when I get home from my other job, but my car broke down again, so, I appreciate what you do." Just 30 minutes earlier, I made two deliveries to a ritzy condominium complex aptly called, ‘The Gold Coast’. Both tips were only two bucks. The contrast from the dad who gave me a tip more than double the other two tips combined from the swanky area, left a lasting impression on me. It wouldn’t be the last time I noticed some people with the least to give, give the most. Another time, I delivered an order to a mansion. A man opened the door while talking on his phone, and a drink in his hand. He never even looked at me as he snatched the bag from my hand and closed the door. The tip was nice, but he wasn't.
WINE, POOL AND A PROPOSITION
A fellow dasher invoked the famous line from the movie ‘Forrest Gump.’ He told me when he delivered alcohol, it was like the iconic line in the movie ‘Forest Gump.’ “It’s like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get”. Oh, was that true. On a sultry summer night, the delivery app dinged. The money was good just to deliver two bottles of wine. As I walked up the cobblestone path, a woman came from around the side of her house drying her hair with a towel having just gotten out of her pool. She told me that nice nights are meant for having wine. She paused, and asked me if I would like to have a glass of wine with her. The tone she used was not to be misunderstood. As a married man, I declined the drink and later shared the story with my wife who started laughing. I said geez, I was hoping for a little jealousy, but nope. She giggled as she tossed a toy to our dog and said goodnight.
TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS
There was no working street lights on this dark, dead-end street, as heavy rain pounded my car windshield. Goosebumps raced up my neck, something didn’t feel right. I accepted a small fast food order. Eerily, I saw the orange glow of someone taking a drag of
a cigarette, as he walked out of the darkness of a dilapidated garage. Another person came from behind a boarded-up gas station, quickly walking toward the passenger seat of my car. I hit the gas, and got out of dodge. Another driver later told me he was robbed in that same area. Food delivery services are very understanding of drivers not delivering orders due to safety concerns, and have a list of safety tips that are worth reviewing.
TENSE DELIVERY, THEN A PROMISE KEPT
Alcohol deliveries increase after midnight, and usually go well. but this delivery at 2 a.m., started off on the rocks. The man was already standing in the heavily cracked concrete driveway waiting for me. There was no one else around, and the houses were dark. I couldn’t even be sure which house he came from. My instincts told me to stay in the car, only roll the window down halfway. When I asked for his ID, he said, “I can’t find my wallet.” I replied that I’m not allowed to give out alcohol without an ID. He said his military ID was in his car, but couldn’t find that either. He started to seem anxious, and so did I. I handed him the whiskey bottle, and I said have a good night. I just wanted to skedattle. He stepped closer to my car and said, “thank you.” He said his girlfriend placed the order, but she went to get cigarettes. He wanted to give me an extra tip, but he didn’t have the pay apps. I said what branch of the military are you in? He said the Army, and that he just found out he was being deployed overseas to a “hostile region.” I said thank you for your service, this one is on me. He smiled, and said his girlfriend has a pay app and will send me a tip. He asked for my cell number. Sure enough, the next day they sent me a tip. I delivered chicken wings, and beer to him a few nights later. This time he had his ID, and left a darn good tip. I wished him well.
A SWEET GRANDPA AND HASH-BROWNS
It was around 7:30 a.m., when I got an order for just two hash browns from a fast-food joint. I thought maybe this person has an hangover, and is craving something a little greasy. Been there, done that! As I
pulled up to the Cleveland home that has a small, manicured lawn, and freshly planted flowers, an older gentleman hobbled down his front steps. He said he orders delivery for breakfast as a once a week treat for his 8-year-old granddaughter on Monday mornings, but the delivery person earlier, forgot her favorite... hash browns. He told me, she’s going to be surprised that her hash browns made it! He’d warm them up, when she gets off the school bus that afternoon. I said you’re a mighty good grandpa. He laughed as he said he might eat one of the hash-browns. He was joking…I think, but what a sweet grandfather.
speaker when she would buzz me in to put the order by her apartment door. She always ordered healthy food, and I pictured a marathon runner with an effervescent spirit. I’d guess she was in her 20s. One night, a gentleman was walking into the lobby with me. He said, “let me guess, you’re delivering to… (no name for privacy.) “I live next door to her,” he said. “You should see her play wheelchair basketball,” he added. “She’ll always use a wheelchair now, ever since the accident, and food delivery services are a blessing for her.”
A WIDOW, AND “A HANKERING
As snow gently fell, the elderly

AN OFFER I COULDN’T REFUSE
As I waited for the grocery store worker to finish shopping for my delivery, I glanced at the order. Root beer, carrot cake, orange soda, ice cream, two glazed donuts, and salisbury steak. Someone has a sweet tooth I thought. Waiting at the door of her home, was a frail elderly woman. “How about taking a donut for the road,” she asked. I said sure, and her eyes smiled. I learned to say yes, in that situation, because like my grandparents, it makes them happy, they feel more relevant, and hey, I also like sweets! I suppose if you’ve lived that long, why not eat what makes you happy.
“FOOD DELIVERY IS A BLESSING FOR HER, SINCE THE ACCIDENT”
One of my favorite customers is someone I never met. Her kind voice, humor, and vibrant spirit lifted me up through the lobby
man wearing an Ohio State Buckeyes wool cap, slowly took the order from my hand. He said his wife was a great cook, and he had a “hankering” for meatloaf and mashed potatoes. He said, “She made the best.” Then with a sense of pride in his voice, “I don’t know how to order food this new way, but my grandkids said anytime I have a taste for something, they’ll order for me.” Then, as the snow got heavier, he added, “Can you believe you can also have ice cream delivered.”
That was a good old fashioned brutal winter, but when spring arrived, my buddies and I played more golf than ever. They teased me to buy the drinks because I was “rich” from my side hustle. You know what, in many ways I was, because so many people I met fulfilled me with a lifetime of riches, you that can’t put a price on.

Los Cabos… On Cruise Control!
By Beverly and Greg Wise - Golf the Wise Way
A Golfer’s Ideal Cruise Itinerary
When reviewing cruise line schedules, it becomes apparent that only one stands out for golf enthusiasts seeking both relaxation and play within the constraints of limited shore time. Carnival Cruise Line’s ship, Panorama, features an itinerary to the Mexican Baja Peninsula perfectly suited for golfers.
The Journey Begins
Setting sail from Long Beach, California, Panorama departs at 4 PM on Sunday. Although the phrase “setting sail” is a tradition, these modern ships are grand floating hotels. The first day is dedicated to relaxation as the ship travels south along the Baja Peninsula towards Los Cabos, Mexico— known fondly as “Lands End.”
Options in Los Cabos
Cruisers have two choices. For those who relish the cruise experience—relaxing, exploring ports, and shopping—Los Cabos offers enticing options. Guided shopping excursions take guests to stores such as Diamonds International and Cariloha, where
correct pronunciation may even earn a free gift. Adventurers can also explore Cabo independently, discovering its historical sites, the impressive marina-side mall,

or enjoying a delicious slice of pizza. Music fans may wish to visit “Cabo Wabo,” Sammy Hagar’s famous venue filled with Van Halen memorabilia. You could also enjoy an excursion like snorkeling, off the coast of Mexico, deep sea fishing, maybe a visit with the dolphins or … an exhilarating cruise down the beaches in your own Razor.
After a day in port, everyone returns to the ship by 5:30 PM for dinner and a short cruise that, according to the ship’s map channel, resembles a 12-hour “box” cruise. The next morning at 8 AM, the ship returns to Cabo again, for further exploration.

OR… an Extended Golfing Opportunity
Alternatively, golf enthusiasts may choose to spend Tuesday night at a nearby golf resort instead of returning to the ship, you just must let them know that you will be staying off the ship allowing for additional time on the green. So, imagine you are off the ship on the first day in Cabo and on your way to the golf course. Book a tee time at 12 noon and after a quick lunch, play your first 18-hole round. While everyone else gets back on the ship for their evening box cruise… after an amazing dinner you are walking on the sand beach while the sun is setting in the west. You book another round in the morning after breakfast around 9 AM and you have completed 2-rounds of amazing Golf in Los Cabos… On Cruise Control.
Golfers… What are your choices?
Reach out to the individual resorts that you are thinking about playing to book your overnight stay off the ship and get all of the specifics on your visit. My simple suggestions… RENT CLUBS for your rounds in Cabo or Ensenada. It is somewhat difficult to accomplish the task of having clubs on a ship. Not impossible… but you won’t miss them for 2-rounds of golf… and you will be better off… because the views are amazing, you won’t even be thinking about your clubs! Could it be any better than that?

Diamante Golf Club: Dunes – Rated #1 in Mexico
Mexico’s first true links course designed by Davis Love III and his design team created a masterpiece out of a set of white sand dunes along the Pacific Ocean. As if you were playing though enormous snow drifts. This is a true test of anyone’s golf game.
Diamante Golf Club: El Cardonal –Rated #6 in Mexico
Opened in 2014 – El Cardonal sets in the desert uplands and has the distinction of being the first for Tiger Woods and the TGR Design Studio constructed golf course. The course hosts the World Wide Technology Championship in November.
Quivira
Solomar Golf Club
Cabo Del Sol Golf Club

Cabo del Sol – Rated #2 in Mexico
A Jack Nicklaus design – Jack described that Baja Peninsula site as “Scottsdale-meets-the-Sea of Cortez.” He also explained that “This is my chance to design a Pebble Beach.” The course opened in 1994, but in 2020 adjustments were made to the final three holes for development, yet it didn’t distract from the balance of the course, landing it in the World’s top 100 rankings.
Quivira Golf Club – Ranked #3
Quivira Golf Club, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Series course, features holes spread across Cabo’s rugged desert connected by long cart rides since its opening 10 years ago. The short par 4 fifth and dramatic par 3s at six and 13, dropping from rocky cliffs to greens high above the Pacific, make the adventure worthwhile.
Solmar Golf Links – Ranked #19
Previously called Rancho San Lucas, Solmar Golf Links is located within an 800-acre resort. Designed by Greg Norman in 2020, the course features three different landscape types: links-style sand dunes, areas with dense cacti, and sections near the Pacific Ocean, with several holes situated directly along the beach.
Enough Golf “Fore” one trip?
Wait… there’s more.
After leaving your 2-day Las Cabos adventure… and a day of cruising to recuperate… there is one more

stop in Ensenada, Mexico before heading back to Long Beach. You can walk the artisan lines streets and shop until you drop for Tequila and Diamonds… but event better than that, there are two more awesome golf courses in Ensenada… but you can only choose one and you will probably have to hurry.
Bajamar Ocean Front Golf ResortJust North of the port right along the coastline is 18 hole – Ocean Course with greens facing the Pacific Ocean, fairways nestled in the hills, lakes, traps, wind, and ravines that test golfers’ skills and game strategies. The Ocean Course was designed by Robert Von Hagge in 1996.
Baja Country Club is pleased to have a championship 18-hole, par 72 golf course that features 6,859 yards of playing surface and 12 acres of lakes as a part of the residential development nested in a beautiful valley with impressive panoramic mountain views for all golf enthusiasts, visitors and residents to enjoy. Designed by recognized golf course architects Pete and Roy Dye; our golf course attracts local and distant golfers. The golf course hosts many different tournaments, clinics, and corporate and altruistic events.

In a dramatic conclusion at the renowned Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club, Anthony Cordes, a PGA of America Assistant Professional of Cherokee Town and Country Club, secured the 2025 Georgia PGA Championship by sinking a 12-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole, finishing at 6-under-par to win by one shot.
Cordes entered the final hole tied at 5-under-par with Francisco Bide, PGA Head Professional from Capital City Club, who led after the first two rounds thanks to a brilliant 7-under-par opening round and steady 1-under-par second round. Cordes, who posted rounds of 4-under-par 66 and 2-under-par 68 to stay in contention, saved his best for last as the championship came down to the wire.
Also, in the final pairing was Matt Sanders, PGA Assistant Professional at West Pines Golf Club, who began the day tied with Cordes at 6-under-par and added excitement with a holein-one on the par 3 168-yard 6th hole. With three holes left to play, Cordes, Bide, and Sanders were locked in a three-way tie, setting the stage for a thrilling finish before Cordes sealed the victory with his birdie on 18.
“It’s been a long time,” Cordes said. “Winning is hard when you’re playing against a lot of good players and the competition is always great. I am very thankful for the support I’ve gotten from my friends, fellow professionals, and the Georgia PGA staff. This one is very special.”
The championship also served as a qualifier for the 2025 PGA of America Professional Championship, where Cordes, Bide, Sanders, Jeff Cammon, PGA Coaching Professional at Sea Island Golf Club, and Jacob Tilton, PGA Coaching Professional of Ansley Golf Club, earned their place among the nation’s top club professionals.

August 28th Teaching & Coaching Summit Hosted at Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate
On August 28th, the NFPGA hosted a Teaching & Coaching Summit at Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate. The 2025 NFPGA Teacher & Coach of the Year, Cheryl Anderson, PGA was the headlining presenter and helped make it a terrific day of education and camaraderie! Cheryl presented with Scott Shepard, MSPT, CFGI - Master Trainer and Sports Physical Therapist - Advent Health. Cheryl and Scott discussed what foundational aspects to look at when teaching a student and how those aspects match up from a golf training perspective. Cheryl also taught two lessons in front of the attendees. This provided insight into how Cheryl teaches, how to work with different students, and provided some great dialogue and questions from the audience.
The day included two partner presentations: one from Clippd and the other from Club Champion. Along with the learning opportunities from these presentations, breakout sessions were held with the following NFPGA Members: Brian Mulvin, PGADirector of Instruction - Southern Hills Plantation Club, Thom Gullo, PGA - Teaching Professional - Thom Gullo Golf, and Dion Muhammad, PGA - Head Golf Professional - Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate.
We appreciate Cheryl, our other presenters, our partners Clippd and Club Champion, and our host facility for an impactful day!

South Florida PGA Foundation Dedicates 12th Habitat for Humanity Home in LaBelle

The South Florida PGA Foundation dedicated its 12th Habitat for Humanity home to new homeowners Jesus and Paola. This build was made possible through a partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Lee and Hendry Counties.
In 2023, the thought of home ownership was merely a glimmer of hope for Jesus and Paola. With a desire to provide a safe home for their young family, faced with many challenges along the way, today’s dedication was filled with joyful tears and much excitement as they received the keys to their first home, thanks to the

support of the South Florida PGA Foundation and all of the members who supported the project.
Bearing gifts upon their arrival, Jesus and Paola were so grateful and appreciative of all the support they received on the journey to homeownership, from their family and friends to the volunteers, Habitat for Humanity staff, and beyond.
“We have a home for our kids to grow,” said Paola. “We are very happy and excited to receive this home.”
The walls of the home were raised on January 15, with more than 15 PGA Professionals volunteering their time during the build days. Their efforts reflect the Foundation’s mission to serve the local community and change lives through the game of golf.
At the dedication ceremony,

South Florida PGA Foundation President Tom Wildenhaus, PGA Director of Golf at Olde Florida Golf Club, presented the symbolic key to Jesus and Paola. This lifechanging moment will provide the couple a safe and stable home for raising their two young children.
“For me, this is still the most awesome occasion I get to be a part of, giving the key to a new home,” said Wildenhaus, who has been involved in every SFPGA home dedication. “We want to help families build safe and strong futures; that is our commitment to the South Florida community.”
Since the first Habitat for Humanity build in 2011, the South Florida PGA Foundation has helped 12 families achieve their dream of homeownership, granting more than $600,000 and contributing over 12,000 hours of volunteer service.

A Turf Pirate's Journal $ Do You Know What Time It Is? $

Greetings and salutations Turf Pirates and welcome to the end of summer, start of Fall edition of a Turf Pirates journal. It has become increasingly obvious to me that every growing season is different and as Turf Pirates we make the majority of our living and build most of our legacy around our ability to get the critical things done in a timely manner. It is all about time and seasons and deadlines and opportunity. I know that seems obvious but as I was traveling about, I found myself in Missouri, Kansas City to be exact at The National Golf Club of Kansas City, home of an outstanding Turf Pirate, Trevor Reid, Director of Agronomy. Trevor and the team were aerating greens that day and I was there to see the process and talk a little turf and plan a few projects. I had some time on my hands and was sitting on the driving range bench making a few calls and sending a few emails when I realized the Kanas City National GC clock was staring a hole through me (thus this month’s photo). Now, we who are card carrying members of the Ancient and Honorable Tribe of Turf Pirates pride ourselves in being freespirits and chasing adventures and following simple rules, well more like suggestions but there are times when the signs are too obvious to ignore. I was going too fast, trying to sail too many ships. This is my 46th summer as a viable Turf Pirate and since we do not know how many summers, we will get I was listing a bit and

needed a shot across the bow to check the rigging. That clock may as well have been a canon. I put my phone in my pocket, sat on the bench, and watched the joy and magic that is a great golf operation happen. Not as an operator but an observer. I decided I needed to make a few
changes in my day to day as it was. I was out of sync, living too fast sometimes and too slow other times and it was time to reset my clock (watch, phone etc.). Can you relate? When was the last time you adjusted your clock, do you really know what time it is? Do you know that the things that you are investing yourself in today are the right ones and are you seeing the depth and impact of the day at hand?
I hope that the 2025 golf season has been kind to you and yours even with all of the crazy weather and global concerns we are still rising. The aspiration of this month’s spin is that you will take a little time as you push towards years end when we generally slow down a bit anyway and reflect about your personal state of affairs and momentum. One of the best things about growing plants for a living is there are lessons everywhere around us about the need for timing in a life well lived. There is a synergy created when we are aware of and aligned with the flow of the journey even when times are tough. Check your time piece of preference my friends and look past the stress and chaos to find the harbor of highest hope and adjust to this idea, time is a concept it lives in the power that we give it, it can be crushing or it can be an ally. Watch the pendulum swing and set your watch accordingly. Wishing you much favor as we head toward the holidays, and until our paths cross again keep reading Golf Central Magazine!

Thank you!

At 18, after two summers as a cart boy, our (then new) superintendent brought me onto the maintenance crew. I started with trash runs, moving tee markers, and weedoing around trees. One of the first things he taught me was how to move cups — and the importance of getting that plug stitched and perfectly level. Before long, I was running every machine we had, throwing lasers across greens, tees, or fairways, and spending afternoon’s fixing whatever the aging ‘irritation’ system decided to throw at us. I learned how to spot stressed areas throughout the course and work backward to find the

cause. Eventually, I could recognize signs of disease and understand the factors that affect disease pressure — not to mention all the chemicals and fertilizers that get mixed into the equation.
My superintendent gave me room to learn, space to make mistakes, and always answered my many questions in a positive, teaching way — never dismissive. Even with a tight municipal budget, he kept the course in great shape. Setting priorities for time and money was a lesson I can now apply anywhere.
He also led by example, never afraid to get his hands dirty. Whether it was jumping on the sand pro, cutting greens, or digging waistdeep with me to fix an irrigation line, he showed that no job was beneath him. And every time, the quality and pace of his work quietly reminded us why he was the boss. Watching him, I realized it wasn’t just about getting the job done — it was about doing it the right way, every time. He’s the one who taught me how to take pride in my work and to carry real passion into whatever I’m doing. Alongside my time on the course, I attended the Milwaukee School
of Engineering and just earned my degree in Electrical Engineering. I’m starting a job working on industrial control projects — from individual machines to full production lines.
I’ll still pick up hours at the course when I can, but I want to thank Brandon Matchen for the trust, the lessons, and for making this the kind of job I’ll never forget.

World Golf Village Welcomes New Director of Agronomy
The World Golf Village Resort in St. Augustine, Fla., recently welcomed Pace Anderson as its new Director of Agronomy. Anderson joined the team in early July and has already begun overseeing agronomy operations for the resort’s two championship courses – the King & Bear and the Slammer & Squire – ensuring world-class course conditions for members, guests, and tournament play.
Anderson brings his experience from prestigious private clubs and tournament venues. Most recently he served as senior golf course superintendent at The Landings Golf & Athletic Club in Savannah, Ga., managing 36 holes of championship golf, a croquet lawn, and practice facilities. During his nearly decade-long tenure, Anderson led major improvement projects, implemented top-tier agronomic

programs, and advanced ecofriendly practices aligned with Audubon standards. Each year, he prepared the course to host the Korn Ferry Tour’s Club Car Championship, featured on Golf Channel as the official host venue.
Prior to his time in Savannah, Anderson spent nearly five years at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., home of THE PLAYERS Championship. There, he was part of the leadership team that completed full renovations of the Stadium Course and Dye’s Valley Course. Over the course of his career, Anderson has supported
more than 25 PGA TOURsanctioned events across the country, bringing a championshiplevel eye for detail to every project.
Located between Jacksonville’s coastline and the historic heart of St. Augustine, The World Golf Village blends the heritage of the game with modern resort amenities. Home to two awardwinning golf courses – the King & Bear, the only course ever co-designed by Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, and Slammer & Squire, a tribute to legends Sam Snead and Gene Sarazen – The World Golf Village is professionally managed by Troon Golf, the resort and daily fee operations division of Troon.

My journey in turfgrass management began one summer at White Columns Country Club in Milton, Georgia. I started on the maintenance team, and what I thought would be a summer job quickly turned into a passion. From the early mornings to learning about bentgrass greens and wilt-watching, I realized how much I loved the work that goes into making a course look and play its best. Since then, I’ve pursued every opportunity to grow in the turf management field. I’ve worked at public and private courses, gaining experience with bentgrass and bermudagrass management. I got as involved as I could with all the UGA turf management opportunities. My first job at UGA was at the UGA golf course where I helped with everyday course setup and maintenance. Then, I spent a semester with the UGA Athletics Grounds Crew and saw firsthand the challenges of sports turf. After that, at the UGA Turfgrass Research Facility, I helped graduate students with research plots and trials. I also stepped into the business side of the industry through two chemical sales internships with Helena Agri-Enterprises. Shadowing sales representatives across Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Tennessee gave me valuable insight into product applications, customer

service, and the broader network that supports turf professionals.
For me, turfgrass management is more than just a career path, it’s a lifestyle. It’s about the pride in seeing a course or field in peak condition and knowing the effort behind it. That’s why the Turf Life Club feels like home: it represents the same dedication and community that inspired me from the start.
I’ll be graduating from the University of Georgia in December 2025, and I’m excited to continue building my career in this industry. Turfgrass management is more than maintaining grass, it’s creating experiences, and I’m proud to be part of that.
