This second volume of the Practical atlas of nutrition and feeding

in cats and dogs is focused on the basics of cat and dog nutrition and food management at different life stages, such as pregnancy and lactation and the geriatric stage. It also addresses the specific needs of puppies and kittens as well as sporting dogs.

This book, like Volume I, is made of a series of double-page spreads with comprehensive information and plenty of visuals that, by turning concepts into images, will enable its readers to further their knowledge on pet nutrition in a pleasant manner.

Presentation of the book Cats and dogs are our pets par excellence, so much so that they are often considered as a member of the family in developed countries. They share our lives with us and only expect love in return. The health benefits of owning an animal have been described; it can therefore be said that the life expectancy of pets has a direct impact on their “guardians”.

The first commercial pet foods were developed in the mid 19th century. It is currently estimated that there are more than 1,200 pet food manufacturers worldwide. Cat and dog diets are unique in the field of animal nutrition. The nutritional needs of these species have not been established according to productive but based on prevention and Practical atlascriteria, of nutrition on enhancing their quality of life from an early age. In fact, specific diets have been designed for the treatment of some diseases. Nutrition in these two species integrates science and clinical practice. As a result, the well-being and life expectancy of our furry friends has been improved. The circle is thus closed.

Veterinarians often do not realise the importance of nutrition on their patients’ health.

However, unlike humans, our patients accept our recommendations more or less willingly and the results are usually satisfactory. In spite of that, nutrition is not an attractive subject to most vets working with dogs and cats.

There is plenty of literature about nutrition, biochemistry, physiology and veterinary anatomy in companion animals. We have tried to write a practical book with the most updated information available to provide vets with a resource for their daily practice. The recommendations must therefore be considered valid for the time being, as nutritional science keeps advancing.

I am very lucky to share my life with a small “four-legged and furry” family and to be able to learn from them. I owe them a lot. This is my small contribution in return for all the love they give me.

We hope and wish this book will contribute to stimulate the interest of veterinarians in this area of knowledge.
