OCampeonato Mundial Motul FIM Superbike faz um regresso esperado ao Autódromo Internacional do Algarve. Jonathan Rea, que fez uma dobradinha da última vez aqui em Portimão, espera repetir mais do mesmo!

O piloto da Irlanda do Norte, Jonathan Rea, sempre foi um talento ímpar no World Superbike mas foi apenas quando se mudou para a equipa espanhola Provec Kawasaki Racing Team em 2015 que se tornou claro para todos o seu verdadeiro andamento. Desde então o resto foi história. No seu ano de estreia com as cores verdes e na última temporada, ‘JR’ realizou o feito de 23 pódios em 26 corridas, não tendo sido surpresa que se tenha tornado no Bicampeão Mundial da categoria desde o grande piloto britânico, Carl Fogarty. E está bem encaminhado para se tornar tricampeão ao chegar ao Algarve com 70 pontos de avanço no campeonato.

A primeira metade da temporada tem visto

Jonathan ser mais dominante que nunca, ganhando 9 vezes em 18 corridas e só terminando fora do pódio uma vez...

Então, quão forte estará aqui em Portimão?

Bem, fez uma dobradinha da última vez que aqui esteve em 2015 e também tinha ganho com a Honda no ano anterior. Obviamente dá-se bem com esta pista, mas será que existe uma pista com a qual não se dê bem?

No outro lado da garagem está o Campeão Mundial de 2013, Tom Skyes, que estará mais do que nunca determinado em rivalizar com o seu colega de equipa. O Tom está de momento muito relaxado e isso tem-se notado na sua pilotagem onde tem estado muito mais confortável e muito mais perto de ‘JR’ em todas as corridas. Obteve a sua primeira vitória de 2017 em Donington Park e tem no total 14 pódios em 18 corridas até ao momento, estando confortavelmente no 2º posto do Campeonato.

Após o final da última temporada, em que vimos Chaz Davies ganhar 7 das últimas 8 corridas, parece provável que Jonathan e a sua ZX-10RR tenham mudado os objetivos um pouco, e será fascinante ver como Davies e a Ducati se dão nesta pista. Contudo, se Chaz conseguir “afinar” perfeitamente a moto irá dar-se bem, isso é certo, e será excitante ver como pilota e se transcende para alcançar os seus rivais na frente.

Foi um milagre que após ter sofrido um atropelamento e lesões nas costas em Misano, tenha lutado e alcançado uma vitória na América apenas umas semanas mais tarde. O alto piloto Galês alcançou uma dobradinha na última etapa na Alemanha e estará empenhado em bater os dois 3º lugares que obteve nesta pista.

E não nos esqueçamos do seu colega de equipa, Marco Melandri, o italiano ganhou 19 vitórias na categoria antes de regressar aos Grands Prix. Ele tem mostrado entusiasmo em regressar à categoria na qual triunfou e mostrou classe no seu regresso ao WorldSBK

And don’t discount his new and former team mate Marco Melandri, the Italian having had 19 victories in the class before he moved back to Grands Prix. He has been keen to get back into the series in which he has thrived and has showed class on his return to WorldSBK culminating in a superb victory at home in Misano. Marco has won twice here before, once on a Yamaha and once on a BMW.

The Italian Barni Racing team come back having retained the services of Spanish rider Xavi Forés who took his first podium in the series last year. The pairing will be keen to build on the experience of their year together and will be looking for even more success, but a 6th in the title race coming here shows Xavi has great consistency.

Sam Lowes comes here in 5th in the title race on the Crescent-run works Yamaha, and bike and rider are getting stronger all the time. On the other side of the garage young Dutch rider Michael van der Mark has been having a more up and down time, leading for a long time in Race One in Misano and then looking off the pace at others. BMW have been running with just one team this year, down from the brace of last season. The S1000RR bike certainly has the power but has had issues transmitting that urge reliably to the tarmac. The ever-smiling Spaniard gives it his all every time out, though, and will be pushing hard here. As will he team mate Raffaele de Rosa, the reigning Superatock 1000 Champion, who replaced Markus Reiterberger earlier in the year.

Honda have had a very difficult season on track and off. Former MotoGP rider Stefan Bradl has struggled to get consistent performance from the all-new Fireblade SP2, while stand-in riders Jake Gagne and Davide Giugliano have also failed to get the Red Bull-liveried bike up to speed. Takumi Takahashi is drafted in for this race and his valuable experience will be essential in getting the bike up to good pace.

In the past few races Aprilia have been getting closer to the front end of the field again, which is where the pretty little Italian V4 deserves to be. The British SMR team (running in the now familiar Milwaukee colours), which ran BMWs last year, has started to get a handle on the bike’s set up, and Eugene Laverty and Lorenzo Savadori are qualifying better even if race pace is not as consistent as either riders or team would like yet.

A third RSV4 is run by the Italian Ioda squad for the ever-improving Argentinian Leandro Mercado, who has proved that he is a rider with great potential.

The prize for the package that is fighting most above its weight is that of MV Agusta and Briton Leon Camier. The F4 has a history that stretches back a long way but in the past year it has been honed to make it as quick as ever. With 8 top sixes in the first nine events Leon has shown that even without the fastest bike on the grid, riding hard and consistently can still bring strong results. WorldSBK
