A book to reflect upon

En los últimos años, Barcelona ha mostrado su compromiso con las mujeres afganas a través de la colaboración con organizaciones que trabajan sobre el terreno, como la Asociación por los Derechos Humanos en Afganistán (ASDHA), con sede en nuestra ciudad.

Desde Barcelona se han apoyado proyectos relacionados con la educación de las mujeres, por ser uno de los colectivos más maltratados durante el dominio de los talibanes. También se ha impulsado la ayuda a grupos de mujeres víctimas de guerra, para promover su movilización contra la impunidad generalizada que existe en el país y la necesidad de que se haga justicia.

Más allá de financiar proyectos sobre el terreno, desde el Ayuntamiento hemos considerado primordial ayudar a acercar la realidad afgana a los barceloneses y las barcelonesas. Por eso hemos colaborado en las jornadas de debate y sensibilización que ASDHA ha organizado cada año en la capital catalana desde 2006, con la asistencia de expertos afganos e internacionales, que han hecho que Barcelona se convierta en un referente sobre Afganistán en Cataluña, España y en el conjunto de Europa.

También consideramos importante la exposición fotográfica y la publicación de este libro sobre mujeres en Afganistán, que analiza su situación en profundidad y hace balance de los logros conseguidos y el camino que aún queda por recorrer. Ha sido un trabajo arduo y largo, de la mano de ASDHA y de dos profesionales que conocen ampliamente la realidad afgana: el periodista y fotógrafo Gervasio Sánchez, y la reportera Mònica Bernabé, la única periodista de nuestro país establecida permanentemente en Afganistán.

La producción del libro se inició en 2009 y ve la luz a finales de 2014, coincidiendo con la retirada de la mayoría de las tropas internacionales de Afganistán, para que la realidad de las mujeres afganas no caiga en el olvido. Espero que las fotografías que se muestran en esta publicación nos sirvan a todos como elemento de reflexión para seguir luchando por el respeto de los derechos humanos en todo el mundo.

In recent years, Barcelona has demonstrated its firm commitment to Afghan women through collaboration with organisations working on the ground, such as the Association for Human Rights in Afghanistan (ASDHA), with headquarters in our city.

Barcelona has supported projects related to the education of Afghan women, one of the most mistreated groups under the Taliban regime. The city has also galvanised support for victims of war women’s groups, promoting their campaign against the widespread impunity in the country and the need for justice.

Beyond financing projects on the ground, the City Council has considered it paramount to bring the reality of Afghanistan closer to Barcelona’s inhabitants. For that reason, we have collaborated in the discussion and raising awareness days that ASDHA has organised each year in the Catalan capital since 2006, with the help of Afghan and international experts, making Barcelona a point reference with regard to Afghanistan in Catalonia, Spain and the European Union.

We also consider of utmost importance the photographic exhibition and publication of this book about women in Afghanistan, which examines their situation in depth and takes stock of the progress made and what remains to be done. The work has been long and arduous, skilfully managed by ASDHA and two professionals who know Afghan reality well: journalist and photographer Gervasio Sánchez and reporter Mònica Bernabé, the only Spanish journalist permanently established in Afghanistan.

Production of the book began in 2009 and it will appear at the end of 2014, coinciding with the withdrawal of the majority of international troops from Afghanistan, thus ensuring that the reality of Afghan women will not be forgotten. I hope the photographs in this book inspire all of us to reflect on the need to continue struggling for respect for human rights all over the world.

Forced into marriage

Un matrimonio no tiene validez según la ley islámica y el Código Penal afgano si uno de los dos cónyuges no da su consentimiento al enlace. Además, la Ley para la Eliminación de la Violencia contra las Mujeres, aprobada en Afganistán en 2009, prevé penas de al menos dos años de cárcel para quien obliga a una mujer a contraer matrimonio en contra de su voluntad. Sin embargo, eso es sólo teoría. La realidad es muy diferente.

UNICEF ha denunciado en repetidas ocasiones que los matrimonios forzados de niñas y adolescentes continúan siendo habituales en Afganistán. En un estudio de 2008 calculaba que un 57 % de las jóvenes afganas son obligadas a casarse antes de los 16 años.

La guerra ha alimentado esta situación. A principio de los años noventa, cuando diferentes facciones muyahidines luchaban por conseguir el control del país, se generalizaron las violaciones y los secuestros de mujeres. Eso hizo que muchas familias optaran por casar a sus hijas a la fuerza, ya que consideraban que estaban más seguras desposadas que solteras, aunque fuera con un hombre que no desearan, porque al menos tendrían a alguien que las protegiera.

La pobreza también contribuye a los matrimonios forzados. El 36 % de la población afgana vive por debajo del umbral de pobreza, según el Banco Mundial. Muchas familias casan a sus hijas cuando aún son niñas o en cuanto tienen la primera menstruación para así obtener dinero. A veces dan su mano al mejor postor. El matrimonio se convierte así en una simple transacción económica.

En otras ocasiones, dar a una hija en matrimonio sirve para saldar disputas, deudas o crímenes cometidos por otro miembro de la familia. Esta última práctica se conoce con el nombre de bad. El badal o trueque consiste en el intercambio de mujeres entre familias para casar a sus respectivos hijos. Así evitan tener que pagar dinero. Las mujeres que enviudan también son obligadas a casarse con un hermano del difunto marido. De esta manera la familia política pretende amortizar el dinero invertido en el casamiento del hijo fallecido.

El Código Civil afgano establece que una joven no se puede casar antes de los 16 años, o de los 15 en caso de que cuente con el permiso paterno o de un juez. La edad mínima de matrimonio para los hombres es de 18 años.

El Corán no especifica a qué edad mínima se deben casar las mujeres, y las interpretaciones al respecto son diversas. Sin embargo, en otros países musulmanes las chicas no pueden contraer matrimonio antes de los 18 años, como es el caso de Bangladesh, Egipto, Iraq, Libia, Túnez, Marruecos, Jordania, Omán, Argelia y Emiratos Árabes Unidos.

En Afganistán no existe todavía un registro obligado de nacimientos o matrimonios, a pesar del mucho dinero invertido por la comunidad internacional en el país desde 2001. Por lo tanto, resulta complicado saber la edad de una persona con certeza o controlar quién se casa con quién. En medio de este caos, el cumplimiento de cualquier ley es una quimera.

A marriage is not valid under Islamic law and the Afghan penal code if one of the spouses does not consent to it.

In addition, the Law on Elimination of Violence against Women, enacted in Afghanistan in 2009, provides for sentences of at least two years of imprisonment for anyone who forces a woman to marry against their will.

However, that is just in theory. Reality is quite different.

UNICEF has repeatedly denounced that forced marriages of girls and adolescents continue to be common in Afghanistan. A 2008 study estimated that 57 % of Afghan girls are forced to get married before age 16.

The war has only fueled this situation. In the early nineties, when different Mujahiddin factions were fighting for control of the country, rape and abduction of women became widespread. As a result, many families chose to force their daughters into marriage as they felt they would be safer than being single, even if it meant marrying a man they did not want as a husband, since they would, at least, have someone to protect them.

Poverty also contributes to forced marriages.

36 % of the Afghan population lives below the poverty line, according to the World Bank. Many families marry off their daughters when they are still children or as soon as they have their first period in order to get money. Sometimes they give their hands in marriage to the highest bidder. Thus, marriage becomes a simple economic transaction.

At other times, giving a daughter’s hand in marriage works to settle disputes, debts or crimes committed by another family member. This practice is known as bad.

Badal or barter is the exchange of women between families to marry off their respective children. Thus, they avoid having to pay money. Widowed women are also forced to marry a brother of the deceased husband.

That way the in-laws try to redeem the money invested in the marriage of their dead son.

The Afghan Civil Code provides that a young woman cannot marry before the age 16, or 15 with approval of her father of a judge. The minimum age for men to marry is 18 years old. The Qur’an does not specify the minimum age women should marry, and there are various interpretations in that regard. However, in other Muslim countries, girls are not allowed marry before age 18, as is the case of Bangladesh, Egypt, Iraq, Libya, Tunisia, Morocco, Jordan, Oman, Algiers and the United Arab Emirates.

There is no mandatory registration of marriages or births in Afghanistan yet, despite the large sums of money invested in the country by the international community since 2001 Therefore, it is difficult to check a person’s age with any certainty or control marriages.

Amid this chaos, compliance with any law is a chimera.

Afganistán es uno de los peores países del mundo para ser madre porque tiene una de las tasas de mortalidad materna más altas del mundo. Según datos de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) correspondientes a 2011, 460 afganas de cada 100.000 fallecen durante el embarazo o el parto. En 2002 la cifra era aún mayor: 1.600. En los últimos años se han producido avances, pero aún insuficientes.

Una de las principales razones de esta elevada mortalidad se debe a que las mujeres en Afganistán son madres a una edad muy temprana, tienen muchos hijos y de forma muy seguida. Si una chica da a luz con menos de 15 años, tiene cinco veces más probabilidades de fallecer durante el embarazo o el parto que una que supere los veinte, según datos de las Naciones Unidas.

Un informe de este organismo correspondiente a 2010 destacaba que casi la mitad de las jóvenes afganas se casan antes de cumplir 15 años.

Un problema añadido de las mujeres en Afganistán es la dificultad de contar con una atención médica especializada durante el embarazo o el parto. Muchas no tienen acceso a centros sanitarios porque estos se localizan en las zonas urbanas, y viajar por el país es difícil y arriesgado a causa de una inexistencia de carreteras asfaltadas y una situación de inseguridad.

Ello obliga a muchas afganas a dar a luz en casa.

Se calcula que en 2002 había unas 500 comadronas preparadas en el país. En 2012 ya llegaban a tres mil.

Aun así, los servicios sanitarios existentes son limitados.

Las aglomeraciones son habituales. Por ejemplo, en la provincia meridional de Helmand, una de las más peligrosas, el hospital público de la capital, Lashkar Gah, atiende cada mes de 700 a 850 partos. En otros centros sanitarios las mujeres son dadas de alta al cabo de una hora de haber dado a luz porque hay otras que esperan para hacerlo y no hay camas suficientes.

Las mujeres en Afganistán tienen una media de seis hijos, ya que el uso de anticonceptivos es muy reducido.

Sólo un 22 % los utiliza, normalmente cuando ya tienen cinco hijos y uno de ellos es varón. Las familias están obsesionadas con tener al menos un hijo de sexo masculino porque es quien se quedará en casa cuando contraiga matrimonio, a diferencia de las hijas, que tras casarse van a vivir con la familia política; es el hijo varón quien mantendrá y cuidará a los padres cuando sean mayores.

Los embarazos tan seguidos no permiten que el cuerpo de la madre tenga tiempo suficiente para recuperarse entre un parto y otro, ni disponga de leche para amamantar al bebé, cosa que dificulta el crecimiento del niño desde su nacimiento. A ello se suman las enfermedades y el desconocimiento de la madre sobre cómo alimentar al bebé cuando para ella la lactancia materna no es factible. Muchas dan té a los pequeños.

Según el Ministerio de Salud Pública afgano, el 8 % de los niños y niñas de menos de cinco años sufren malnutrición severa, y hasta el 60 % del total, malnutrición crónica. La Organización Mundial de la Salud calcula que 101 niños y niñas de cada mil por debajo de los cinco años de edad mueren en Afganistán por ese motivo.

Afghanistan is one of the worst countries in the world to be a mother because it has one of the highest rates of maternal mortality in the world. According World Health Organization (WHO) data for 2011, 460 of every 100,000 Afghan women die during pregnancy or childbirth. In 2002, the figure was even higher: 1,600.

In the last few years, there has been some progress but not enough.

One of the main reasons for this high mortality rate is that women in Afghanistan become mothers at a very young age, and they have many children very quickly.

If a girl gives birth before she is 15 years old, she is five times more likely to die during pregnancy or childbirth than a woman over twenty, according to United Nations data. A 2010 report from this agency pointed out that almost half of Afghan girls are married before age 15.

An added problem for women in Afghanistan is how hard it is to have specialized medical care available during pregnancy and childbirth. Many do not have access to health centers because they are located in urban areas, and travel around the country is difficult and risky because of the lack of paved roads and the unsafe situation. This forces many Afghan women to give birth at home.

It is estimated that in 2002, there were 500 trained midwives in the country. In 2012, their number reached three thousand. Still, existing healthcare services are not enough. Overcrowded services are common. For example, in the southern province of Helmand, one of the most dangerous, the public hospital in the capital, Lashkar Gah, sees 700-850 deliveries per month. In other hospitals, women are discharged within an hour of giving birth because there are others waiting to deliver and not enough beds.

Women in Afghanistan have an average of six children, since contraceptives are rarely used. Only 22 % use them, usually when they already have five children and one of them is a boy. Families are obsessed with having at least one male child because he is the one who shall stay home when he marries, unlike the daughters, who will live with their in-laws; it is the son who shall support and take care of the parents when they are elderly.

Such close together pregnancies do not give the mother’s body enough time to recover from childbirth or to have enough milk to breastfeed, which hinders the child’s growth from birth. On top of this, there are illnesses and the mother’s lack of knowledge about how to feed the baby when breastfeeding is not feasible.

Many give babies tea.

According to the Afghan Ministry of Public Health, 8 % of children under five suffer severe malnutrition, and up to 60 % of the total, chronic malnutrition. The World Health Organization estimates that 101 children per thousand under five years old die in Afghanistan for that reason.

Afganistán es el único país del mundo donde el número de mujeres que se suicidan es mayor al de hombres.

Durante 2012, unas 2.500 mujeres se quitaron la vida, cifra que equivale al 95 % del total de casos de suicidio registrados en el país, según datos facilitados por el Ministerio de Salud Pública en septiembre de 2013, coincidiendo con la conmemoración del Día Mundial de Prevención del Suicidio.

La mayoría de mujeres que intentan acabar con su vida son jóvenes de 14 a 21 años que sufren malos tratos en el seno familiar o se ven obligadas a casarse con un hombre que no desean.

En la provincia de Herat, en el oeste de Afganistán, las mujeres suelen suicidarse quemándose a lo bonzo debido a la proximidad de esta provincia con Irán, donde esta práctica es habitual. Actúan por mimetismo.

«No son conscientes de las consecuencias reales», destaca Ghafar Bawar, médico responsable de la unidad de quemados del hospital de Herat, uno de los pocos centros sanitarios de Afganistán con esta especialidad.

Las jóvenes creen que el fuego las matará con rapidez, pero la mayoría sufre una muerte extremadamente dolorosa y lenta. Es difícil que sobrevivan si tienen más del 40 % del cuerpo quemado, aunque reciban atención médica especializada en un hospital.

Las que sobreviven sufren secuelas para el resto de su vida y normalmente no consiguen resolver el problema que las llevó a intentar suicidarse. La familia intenta esconder que ella misma se prendió fuego porque lo considera una deshonra.

«Dicen que fue un accidente, que se quemó mientras cocinaba», explica el doctor Bawar, que asegura que es fácil identificar si una mujer ha intentado suicidarse: por su edad y porque se prenden fuego con combustible, mientras que para cocinar usan gas o leña.

«Normalmente se rocían el abdomen porque muchas no pretenden morir, tan solo llamar la atención sobre su situación. Creen que así solo se causarán una pequeña lesión, pero el fuego prende la ropa y el cabello, y quedan envueltas por las llamas rápidamente», relata.

En 2007, la Comisión Independiente de Derechos Humanos en Afganistán (AIHRC) registró 184 casos de mujeres que se quemaron a lo bonzo, la cifra más alta desde la caída del régimen talibán. Este tipo de suicidios disminuyó en un 40 % en la provincia de Herat en 2013, según la Misión de Asistencia de las Naciones Unidas en Afganistán (UNAMA), debido a las campañas de sensibilización llevadas a cabo por asociaciones no gubernamentales.

Afghanistan is the only country in the world where the number of women who commit suicide is greater than men. In 2012, some 2,500 women took their own lives, an amount equal to 95 % of all the cases of suicide recorded in the country, according to data provided by the Ministry of Public Health in 2013, coinciding with the commemoration of World Suicide Prevention Day. Most of the women who try to kill themselves are young, between 14 and 21 years of age, and are victims of domestic abuse or are forced to marry a man they do not love.

In the province of Herat, in western Afghanistan, women tend to burn themselves to death due to the proximity of this province to Iran, where the practice of self-immolation by fire is common. It is an act of mimesis. «They aren’t aware of the actual consequences,» says Ghafar Bawar, a doctor in charge of the burn unit in Herat Hospital, one of the few medical centres in Afghanistan with this specialty. The young girls think that the fire will kill them quickly, but the majority suffers an extremely slow and painful death. It is unlikely the girls will survive if more than 40 % of their body is burned, even if they receive special medical attention in a hospital.

Those that do survive suffer life-long repercussions and usually do not resolve the issue that drove them to try and kill themselves to begin with. The family attempt to hide the fact that the girl set herself on fire because it is considered dishonourable.

«They say it was an accident, that she burnt herself cooking,» Dr. Bawar explains, adding that it is not difficult to determine if a woman has tried to kill herself: due to her age and because they catch fire with fuel, while gas or wood is used for cooking. «Normally they apply the fuel to their abdomen since many don’t want to die, but simply call attention to their situation. They think this will only cause a minor injury, but the fire ignites their clothing and hair, and they are quickly engulfed in flames,» he continues.

In 2007, the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) recorded 184 cases of women who burnt themselves alive, the highest figure since the fall of the Taliban regime. This form of suicide decreased by 40 % in Herat province in 2013, according to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), thanks to awareness raising campaigns carried out by non-governmental associations.

Los talibanes, que estaban en contra de las fotografías, la televisión y cualquier viso de modernidad, tenían una página web en internet durante los años que estuvieron en el poder en Afganistán (1996-2001), en la que explicaban su ideario y justificaban sus restricciones contra las mujeres.

«El Emirato Islámico de Afganistán se encuentra totalmente comprometido con el desarrollo social, cultural y económico de las mujeres. El Gobierno ha sido capaz de proteger el honor, la vida y las pertenencias de las mujeres afganas. A diferencia de la situación existente durante el régimen de Rabbani, las mujeres pueden ahora salir de casa con seguridad y sin miedo a ser secuestradas, violadas o asaltadas», destacaba la web.

Durante el régimen muyahidín de Burhanuddin Rabbani (1992-1996), la violación, el secuestro y el abuso de mujeres se convirtió en algo habitual en Afganistán debido a una situación de total impunidad. Ya entonces muchas mujeres optaron por abandonar sus puestos de trabajo y vestir el burka, por miedo a lo que les pudiera pasar en la calle.

En su web, los talibanes también decían que «la educación es obligatoria, tanto para hombres como para mujeres, según los principios del islam». Sin embargo, añadían, «por desgracia hoy en día no existen en Afganistán las condiciones para desarrollar un programa educativo islámico, adecuado y eficaz para las mujeres».

Fue por ello que prohibieron la educación a las afganas.

Asimismo, justificaban el motivo por el que las mujeres no podían trabajar fuera de casa. «Después de que los comunistas se hicieran con el control de Kabul, empezaron a explotar a las mujeres para sus propios objetivos sociales y políticos. A pesar de la guerra y de la falta de empleo en la administración, el régimen comunista obligó a un gran número de mujeres a ir a las oficinas gubernamentales para utilizarlas para su diversión», denunciaba la web, en alusión al régimen prosoviético afgano.

En cuanto al burka, los talibanes también presentaban en su web una razón para argumentar que las mujeres tuvieran que llevarlo obligatoriamente al salir de casa.

«Se trata de una medida que se ha tomado por la simple razón de garantizar el honor, la dignidad y la seguridad personal de las mujeres en Afganistán».

Tras la caída del régimen talibán se levantaron todas estas restricciones. Las mujeres pudieron trabajar de nuevo fuera de casa, tener acceso a la educación o salir a la calle sin burka. Incluso así, Afganistán es un país profundamente conservador, machista y religioso, y las mujeres continúan teniendo enormes limitaciones a pesar de que los talibanes ya no estén en el poder.

Resulta sintomático el hecho de que la mayoría de afganas activistas a favor de los derechos de las mujeres son solteras o no dependen de una figura masculina.

Las que se saltan las convenciones sociales y van contra la corriente, suelen pagar las consecuencias.

The Taliban, which opposed photographs, television and any glimmer of modernity, maintained an Internet webpage while it was in power in Afghanistan (19962001), explaining its ideology and justifying its restrictions against women on it.

«The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan is fully committed to the social, cultural and economic development of women. The government has been able to protect the honour, life and belongings of Afghan women.

Unlike the situation when Rabbani was in power, women can now leave the house safely and without fear of being abducted, raped or assaulted,» the webpage claimed. During the mujahideen regime of Burhanuddin Rabbani (1992-1996), the rape, kidnapping and abuse of women became commonplace in Afghanistan due to the situation of total impunity. As a result, many women chose to leave their jobs and wear a burqa, out of fear of what could happen to them in the street.

On its webpage, the Taliban also said «education is compulsory, both for men and women, according to the principles of Islam.» However, it added, «unfortunately currently in Afghanistan the conditions do not exist for developing an adequate and effective Islamic education programme for women.» It was for this reason that the Taliban prohibited Afghan women from studying.

Similarly, the Taliban attempted to justify the prohibition on women working outside of the home.

«After the communists took control of Kabul, they began exploiting women for their own social and political objectives. In spite of the war and the lack of employment in the administration, the communist regime forced a large number of women to go to government offices to be used for the communists own entertainment,» the webpage decried, alluding to the pro-Soviet Afghan regime.

As for the burqa, the Taliban also provided grounds on its webpage for the argument that women were required to wear one when they left the house. «It concerns a measure that has been taken for the simple reason of guaranteeing the honour, dignity and personal safety of women in Afghanistan.»

After the fall of the Taliban regime, all of these restrictions were lifted. Women could work again outside of the home, have access to education and be out and about in the street without a burqa. Even so, Afghanistan is a deeply conservative, male chauvinist and religious country, and women continue to be burdened with enormous limitations despite the fact that the Taliban is no longer in power. It is symptomatic that the majority of female Afghan activists in favour of women’s rights are single women or do not depend on a male figure.

The ones who defy social conventions and go against the current more often than not pay the consequences for doing so.

In the Afghan capital there are kilometres of concrete walls that serve as protection against possible attacks on embassies, ministries and military bases, and could be a panacea for any spray-paint artist. «The problem is people in Afghanistan don’t understand graffiti,» she regrets.

And even less if the artist is a woman.

Born in Iran in 1988 to a Pashtun family of Afghan refugees, Shamsia realized her dream of studying fine arts in university when her family returned to Kabul. «In Tehran, Afghan refugees are not allowed to study fine arts. There were only a few spots and they were all reserved for Iranians,» she complains.

Shamsia explains. She is skeptical about finding a man in Afghanistan who will understand her and predicts she will remain single. «I’m a different kind of a girl,» she says.

El estadio de deportes de Kabul era el lugar donde los talibanes cortaban las manos o ejecutaban a los que no cumplían sus preceptos. Allí mataron a Zarmina, una madre afgana con siete hijos que en noviembre de 1999 se convirtió en la primera mujer ajusticiada en público por el régimen de los talibanes, acusada de haber matado a su marido. Los talibanes le descerrajaron un tiro en la cabeza en medio del estadio.

En este mismo lugar, algunas jóvenes afganas juegan ahora a fútbol. La mayoría son universitarias o adolescentes que pertenecen a familias de clase social media o alta. Es la imagen más significativa del cambio respecto a la época de los talibanes.

La policía vigila el acceso al estadio. Las jóvenes futbolistas se desplazan hasta allí en coche, y a menudo ocultan a sus amistades y familiares que practican deporte. A pesar de que el deporte ya no está prohibido como durante el régimen de los talibanes, continúa estando mal visto que las mujeres lo practiquen.

En Kabul existen 16 equipos de fútbol, y en 2013 se celebró la primera liga femenina, pero con un público escaso. La Federación de Fútbol de Afganistán casi no promocionó esa competición para evitar problemas a las jugadoras en una sociedad tan conservadora como la afgana. The sports stadium in Kabul is where the Taliban would cut off the hand of people who did not obey its rules or would simply execute them. They killed Zarmina there, an Afghan mother with seven children who, in November 1999, became the first woman put to death in public by the Taliban regime, accused of killing her husband. The Taliban shot her in the head in the middle of the stadium.

In this same place, some young Afghan women now play football. Most are university students or adolescents from middle and upper class families. It is the most striking image of change with respect to the Taliban period.

The police guard the access to the stadium. The young women travel there by car, and often they hide the fact that they play football from their family and friends. While it is not prohibited as it was under Taliban rule, the idea of women playing a sport is still frowned upon.

There are 16 football teams in Kabul, and in 2013 the first female league was inaugurated, though attendance was low. The Afghanistan Football Federation barely promoted the matches to avoid problems for the players in an environment as orthodox as Afghan society. Only relatives of the players were allowed on the field.

Volleyball, basketball, taekwondo, boxing and track and field are other sports that girls engage in. They are the new generation of young Afghan women.
