Bienvenido a la sorprendente India

L

a celebración de la duodécima edición de la feria Expo Flora y del 25 aniversario de la floricultura en India han sido dos razones bien justificadas para viajar a la

India. A medio día desde el aeropuerto del Prat en Barcelona al aeropuerto Atatürk de Estambul para coger a las cuatro de la tarde el vuelo a Mumbai, la capital del estado federal de Maharashtra. A la cinco de la madrugada, un taxi nos lleva en algo más de cuatro horas al destino final: la ciudad de Pune. La region con el mismo nombre es una de las seleccionadas por el Gobierno para el desarrollo de la floricultura entre otros razones por su climatología. Esta iniciativa tuvo claramente la exportación como vocación. No es difícil imaginarse lo difícil que fueron estos primeros años. Parecía que la subasta holandesa ofrecía la solución para la comercialización a nivel internacional. Sin duda, la divulgación de los conocimientos sobre post cosecha, selección y empaque han sido útiles, sin embargo el reloj de la subasta causó muchas decepciones. Incluso, cuando el producto no se vende, el exportador recibe una factura de los gastos. Afortunadamente, en el curso de los años los exportadores indios han encontrado un camino directo a los importadores, una tendencia que se refuerza año tras año, también gracias a las nuevas y directas rutas aéreas. El desarrollo de fincas florícolas en el estado costero de Goa puede ofrecer perspectivas interesantes para el transporte marítimo en contenedor refrigerado. Mientras, el mercado interior indio de flor y planta ornamental crece cada año un 25% y los laboratorios biotecnologías están conquistando el mercado mundial debido a una excelente calidad. En esta y la siguiente edición de Flormarket Global entraremos en detalle sobre la situación actual de la horticultura ornamental y sus perspectivas.

he celebration of the 12th edition of Expo Flora and the 25th anniversary of floriculture in India were two important events that more than justified a trip to India.

On midday from the airport in Barcelona to Atatürk’s airport in Istanbul, in order to catch at four in the afternoon the flight to Mumbai, the capital of the federal state of Maharashtra. At five in the morning, a taxi takes us in just over four hours to our final destination: the city of Pune.

The region with the same name is one of the areas selected by the Government for the development of floriculture because of its climate. This initiative clearly had export as a vocation. It is not difficult to imagine how difficult these early years were.

At the beginning it seemed that the Dutch auction offered the solution to reach international markets. Undoubtedly, the know-how, for instance, on post harvest, selection and packaging given by the auction has been useful, however the auction clock often caused disappointment. Even when the produce is not sold, the exporter receives an invoice. Fortunately, over the years Indian exporters have found their way straight to importers, a trend that is reinforced year after year, also thanks to new and direct air routes. The development of floriculture estates in the coastal state of Goa may offer interesting prospects for maritime transportation in refrigerated containers. Meanwhile, the Indian flower market and ornamental plant grows every year by 25% and biotechnologies laboratories are conquering the world market due to their excellent quality. In this and our next edition of Flormarket Global we will go into detail about the current situation of ornamental horticulture and its perspectives.

ace seis años, unas empresas holandeses en el mundo del Lilium celebraron bajo el nombre Dutch Lily Days sus primeras jornadas de puertas abiertas en la misma semana. A partir de este momento el evento ha ganado importancia y prestigio en el mundo entero. Del martes 6 al viernes 9 de junio tendrá lugar la séptima edición del evento. De nuevo cuenta con trece empresas participantes, tanto obtentores como exportadores.

he collective presentation of the Dutch Lily Days is now a fixed item on the international calendar of Lilium professionals. Six years ago, prominent players in the lily market linked their annual open days under this label. For the 7th edition on Tuesday to Friday, June 6 9, a large number of foreign and Dutch professionals is expected to visit the 13 participating companies.

l Wisteria tunnels at Kawachi Fijien Garden (Kitakyushu City - Japan). It is a private Wisteria garden established in 1977, open only during the season and when the leaves of Wisteria change colours in autumn.

Generally Wisteria is said to be at its best at the beginning of May, but being in the warm southern climate, the best time to visit Kawachi Fujien is in late April. Approximately 150 trees comprising 22 varieties of Wisteria grow in a 10,000 m2 area.

There are two Wisteria tunnels, one of 80 meter and another of 220 m long.

Angelika Jensen es una de las expertas en este campo y se llevó su spaniel francés Cara a la feria IPM Essen, uno de sus perros entrenados, para explicar cómo un perro puede ser entrenado para oler estos insectos.

En su búsqueda de larvas, los perros se alternan cada media hora, de modo que las células nerviosas del animal pueden regenerarse rápidamente. Los sitios de detección son los aeropuertos, los puertos marítimos y los controles de importación de árboles. “Los perros son la herramienta ideal, porque pueden trabajar en practicamente todos los terrenos. Más de 57.000 profesionales de todo el mundo visitaron el recinto ferial Messe Essen del 24 al 27 de enero. Allí, 1.577 expositores de 45 países les informaran sobre nuevas variedades de plantas, innovaciones en tecnología hortícola, tendencias en floristería y productos promocionales para puntos de venta.

Esta variedad se produce en la empresa Aleia Roses ubicada en la provincia de Soria. Sus invernaderos de vanguardia cubren una superficie de 15 hectáreas. Esta rosa de color rojo intenso tiene una vida en florero de

15 días e incluso más, si los consejos de cuidado se mantienen. El tallo puede llegar a medir hasta 90 cm. Canal Flor, mayorista e importador de flores naturales obtuvo la representación en exclusividad de Aleia Roses para Cataluña, Islas Baleares y el Sur de Francia.

These succesful initiatives have drawn a lot of attention to this Danish breeder and consequently have been rewarded with prizes and medals at international rose events. Nevertheless, the production of mini roses remains the main activity of the firm. Which are the main lines of mini roses that you have breed and how do they differ from each other?

-Roses Forever® and Infinity® mini roses.

After having been in a cold outdoor place, the Roses Forever® are very suitable to be forced in semi cold or warm greenhouses and to grow up looking like a nice strong garden rose.

Roses Forever® roses have all strong colours which don´t fade.

Infinity® roses have more the nordic Scandinavian look with white, rosa and pastel colours, and very big fil-led flowers.

Their popularity is booming everywhere in Europe and Asia. In Japan they grow a lot of Infinity® roses, they consider these roses as very high quality roses for the upper-end customer which wants only the very best. Infinity® roses are especially selected to last a very long time indoors, but they can also be placed outdoors in big pots and in small gardens.

The developments in your assortment of mini roses are based on 30 years of experience. Are there some aspects in breeding, which are always on the top of the improvement list?

-I always go for plants which are easy to grow for our licensed producers and grow into a nice, compact and healthy quality plant. That is our number one point. Besides, big flowers sell better, so this is also one of our special characteristics in both the Forever® line and the Infinity® line. We also have smaller and medium size flowers for the very small pots (6-10 cm), these varieties have a mass of buds in addition. Two years ago we decided to target more on smell (perfume roses). We succeeded with some very fragrant garden roses (in the Plant’n’Relax® line) and for 2018 we believe to be ready also with a line of mini roses with a nice smell. I see in the test beds a lot of fragranced ones, so

-Yo siempre busco plantas que sean fáciles de cultivar para nuestros productores con licencia y se conviertan en una planta de calidad, compacta y sana. Es nuestro punto número uno.

Además, las flores grandes se venden mejor, por lo que esta propiedad es también una de nuestras características especiales tanto en la línea Forever® como en la línea Infinity®. Could you describe the new mini roses 2017 from Roses Forever®.

-It is possible to choose from a bigger variety of different lines of production

In addition the format of the passport shall be unified. Indicating the facts has been so far enough, but also its design shall be standardized. The new format will contain: the European Union flag, the word Phytosanitary passport and the letters A, B, C and D, giving the information such as the botanical name, the code of the member state + the number of the registered company, the traceability and the country of production. At the beginning of 2018 all details will be known, for this reason it is advisable to limit the stocks of documents, related to this passport.

Las ferias Christmasworld y Floradecora celebradas a finales de enero pasado, atrajeron a 43.233 visitantes de 110 países (17.690 de Alemania y 25.543 del extranjero) a Frankfurt am Main. Un total de 1.070 expositores de 42 países presentaron sus nuevos productos y tendencias de decoración. Más de 10.700 visitantes profesionales de las tres ferias (Christmasworld, Paperworld y Creativeworld) visitaron Floradecora por razones profesionales durante los cuatro días del evento. Not only the growers were honoured, but also the traders, consultants, providers of young plants/seeds, fertilizers and technical equipment, representatives of research and government institutes... This concept created an exceptional ambience of belonging to the same family.

The first ever export oriented flower project for roses was set up in the year 1991, 25 years ago at Maval in the Pune district of the state of Maharashtra. Since then, the flower industry has seen many ups and downs. Before 1991 the greenhouse technology, export of fresh flowers could not be imagined. In a country with poor logistics, bad roads and infrastructure to think of exporting fresh flowers to Europe, Australia, Japan and the Middle East was a distant dream, according to the words of Mr. Sharma.

Thanks to the Indian Government, which identified floriculture as a sunrise industry and encouraged investments in this sector, the response towards investing in flower farms was overwhelming. More than 500 Export Oriented Units (EOU) were registered during these first years. This number declined to 150 flower projects in four zones:

Unavailability of skilled labour affects the floriculture production. Often growers have to sell their produce at a very cheap price, because of local taxes on transportation, commission agents, inadequate grading and storage. Besides, the linkage between research and the floriculture industry must be improved. Information management related to better techniques are not easily available to flower growers in small towns and villages. There is many unlicensed seed and planting material.

India has initiated the procedure for adhesion to the UPOV (International Convention for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants), but breeders are still afraid to introduce their varieties in India. A major problem faced by Indian flower exporters relates to a low level of product diversification.

Emerging environmental and post havest management are other items of concern to be faced in order to enlarge

the export. The international competition in the global trade has increased with the entry of new African countries. Besides, several Asian neighbours are also emerging as competitors, such as China, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Nevertheless Soex Flora wants to continue their all-year-round production scheme, if necessary by implementing additional technical measures such as shading and water spraying. Quality and continuity are two important goals to achieve through all twelve months of Ω the year.

La construcción misma del invernadero está provista de un recubrimiento con una sustancia blanca que tiene un alto grado de refracción lumínica del 90%. También implementaron el “Smartglass” o

vidrio inteligente, un nuevo tipo de vidrio difuso de 300 x 167 cm. Incluso, si el vidrio está mojado o condensado, la transmisión de luz no disminuye.

El sistema de las pantallasclimáticas está montado en forma de W para generar la transmisión óptima de la luz, es decir, bajo el mismo ángulo que el techo del invernadero. Adicionalmente se aplica una nueva pantalla altamente transparente para la luz. El término es ISO++ y consiste en un sistema de dos pantallas montadas a una distancia entre las dos de sólo 6 cm.

Ambas pantallas se puede controlar individualmente.

Otra tecnología implicada el “Air in Control” un sistema que controla y actúa sobre el aire en el invernadero (hume-

This MG-1S includes among other items a GPS for the exact

For programming one walks just with the flight controller along the plot, and the drone automatically calculates the correct movements and altitude. The liquid tank has a volume of 10 liters. Urban green spaces are both vectors of public health and economic activity – as measured by The Green Cities Observatory every year. Green cities have less pollution, fewer health problems and less delinquency. They have become a new social model championed by

the above mentioned Observatory. Its members have all signed the “Gardens for the Climate” manifest which invites us all to “generalize plants in cities to lower the temperature and recreate islands of coolness”.

Catherine Muller: Tomorrow’s gardens will be limitless. “Open Spaces” indoors and out, a little like the way offices have evolved, less horticultural, more nourishing and more useful with a future for collections - to some extent museums. I am convinced that the choice of plantations will improve to reflect local species and have a positive impact Ω on biodiversity.
