“I would like to live while I still can work.” Tomie Ohtake repeated this motto to friends, mainly after she became a hundred years old. And, as the plastic artist herself foresaw, she remained active while able to work, until she passed away in past February 12th, at the age of 101. Now, the result of this huge production may be seen from April 2nd to June 7th at the Institute that carries her name in São Paulo State’s capital. also in an exhibit”, explains Ricardo Ohtake, son of the honored artist and the Institute’s president. In this selected collection, there are 30 new canvas – most of them monochromatic – in addition to wire bending and metal plates. The exhibit is completed with texts and testimonies of friends that are also artists, such as Carmela Gross, Leda Catunda and Jac Leirner. Initiatives to honor the space’s patron are frequent, but this one has a different and special appeal, as it is the first one organized after her death. “This exhibit tries to talk about vitality, about how she remained active, with the necessity of innovating her production and remaining present in creation methods”, explains Caroline de Angelis, of the Institute’s Research and Curatorship Nucleus.
