Girls, girls, girls as U13s break records

A rECOrd-BrEAking season for the U13 girls footballers on several fronts saw over 50 girls turn up regularly to training.

It’s been incredible! Five different teams played competitive school football across the year. The feat of winning the District Div 1 AND cup final alongside finishing runners-up in Surrey - and reaching the last 32 of the national cup - cannot be praised enough.

Trebles all round

Weydon enjoyed a 3-out-of-3 footie tournament at Manchester City’s Etihad stadium in a trip which also saw them praised for attitude and behaviour.

The team demonstrated outstanding spirit and a togetherness that ensured the promotion of girls football is at the forefront of everything we do.

We’re excited about the successful end of KS3 girls football and the beginning of - hopefully - a successful KS4 football programme.

‘They’ve had a tremendous season, with really good results, but more importantly, they’ve played some lovely football and done it all with smiles on their faces,’ said Mr Dulley. ‘This is what girls football is all about.’

Ella Knights said: ‘Weydon has always been amazing for girls football.

‘We’ve enjoyed every moment of the season from the training to the matches and are thankful for everything and everyone that has supported us.’

Having narrowly lost out in the County Cup final, the U16 Girls put in an excellent performance to beat local rivals Robert Mays in the District Cup final. Lucy Cochrane sccored the all-important early goal, and Ellen Dring was player of the match, but this was very much a team performance. Head coach Jack Craven said: ‘What a team and what a group of girls to have worked with this year. They should all be very proud of the progress they have made.’

Top 10 finish despite gales ripping the sails

Over 100 boats entered the annual rS Feva Schools Week competition at tchenor Sailing Club, including Zoe Lomas-Clarke (8Cr) and Will Ahlheid (7CW) in July.

At this competition, you have to sail a two-person boat with someone from your school, so private sailing schools from all around the country can come to compete, including Tonbridge, Sevenoaks, Priestlands, RGS and many more.

The first day of racing was very windy, with gusts up to 30 mph!

Only 70 boats went out on the first day because of the wind but we managed to come 15th in the first race, battling a very strong tide, choppy water and big winds.

In the second race, the wind increased swelling the waves meaning we capsized right before the finish line and ended up 35th, but only 50 boats completed that race.

That was the last race of Monday as it was too hard to keep control of the boats; people were capsizing all over the course! After the first day

of racing, we were sitting in 20th overall out of 110. A big thanks to Miss Howard and Finlay Lomas-Clarke (ex-Weydon student) for being our support rib for the day!

Day two saw much more manageable conditions, although it was still pretty windy - around 20 miles per hour - and thankfully we were able to quickly get a replacement sail.

The race officer managed to get all four races completed. We got 14th, 19th, 22nd and in the final race we came 7th as the wind picked up again and the waves got bigger after the tide turned.

Overall, we were very pleased to finish 15th; we had been competing against people a lot older (up to year 10) who go to professional private sailing schools. Hopefully, we’ll be able to come back to Itchenor next year for this amazing event again!

Teacher Isobel Howard said: ‘Congratulations Zoe that is SO IMPRESSIVE! Massive well done! Nice to know you got the four races in and finished 7th?!!!?!

TOP TEN finish! What an achievement!’

Slam dunk for Jess in basketball comp

The PE department ran a design competition to create a suitable logo for the school’s basketball teams.

The design brief was to reflect the previously chosen Weydon Warriors’ name.

Jess Maginnis’s entry (above right) was selected as overall winnner and will go forward to be used for the upcoming basketball season.

Theodoros Karakasilis was highly commended for his effort (right).

Weydon World wows media Awards

Your paper was highly-commended in the ‘Best Printed Publication’ section of the Shine School Media Awards in London.

Weydon World faced fierce competition from schools all over Englandand even one in Taiwan! - with entries impressing judges in all categories. Weydon’s effort - focused on sporting achievements - was described as ‘picture-driven content coupled with clear headlines and shorter articles that make it really readable’.

‘The way it adapts a standard newspaper style to the school content is a very clever, creative device,’ said judge

Liz Ross-Martyn of sponsors The Printing Charity.

Weydon Director of Sport Karl Brown travelled to Stationers’ Hall near St. Paul’s cathedral for the awards day with student Harry Mayer. Another 150 young wannabe journalists were in attendance. Industry-related workshops ran throughout the morning to allow pupils including Weydon’s Harry to talk with Shine’s sponsors and learn more about career opportunities within the publishing industry.

The school is now seeking local companies willing to buy advertising space in future publications: 2,500 copies are

distributed to students and parents.

Shine aim to celebrate communication skills throughout the ever-changing media world; some school magazines are often submitted as pdf files with links to embedded videos and podcasts.

The Stationers’ Company offers more than awards; bursaries for post-graduate degrees in courses related to the print trade are available too.

The 600-year-old Stationers’ Company has over 900 members involved in communication and content industries such as paper, print, publishing, packaging, office products, newspapers, broadcasting and online media.

‘electric’ Weydon retain the TFN crown

The TFN - Transforming Fourteen to Nineteen Education - Sports Day this year proved to be an epic event for Weydon.

The annual athletics day takes place at the Aldershot Military Stadium featuring Weydon, Ash Manor, All Hallows and Heath End schools. The Abbey School also enters a few competitors in selected events.

After Covid cancelled the event for a couple of years, Weydon were roaring

to defend the title they won in 2022.

After a day of competition in multiple athletic disciplines including 60m, 100m, 200m, 400m, long jump, triple jump, high jump, shot, discus, javelin and tug of war, the final events are the 4 x 100m relay races. These always get the crowd on their feet.

Weydon were delighted to retain their crown with a comprehensive win in each year group, to ensure that they won the overall crown again.

The atmosphere at this event was incredibly supportive from all schools, with students recognising and applauding each other’s performances.

Many students broke TFN records (pictured above) despite poor weather.

Sports Leader Freya was full of enthusiasm for the day: “What an amazing atmosphere throughout the day. I’m so proud of all our athletes for their performances.

‘Those final relays were electric al-

though I think we could go even faster with more practice.’

Organiser Karl Brown said: ‘Well done not only to the record breakers but to every student who gave it their all for their school. Athletics is a discipline we are keen to develop at Weydon as it underpins so many other sporting performances and this sort of event provides a great opportunity for students to showcase and develop their often previously hidden talents.’

Weydon lads train at Stoop

Year 7 and 8 rugby players enjoyed travelling up to The Stoop to watch Harlequins play a match against Saracens.

Before the game, the Weydon students undertook a training session with some of the Harlequins coaching team. They also got to meet and talk to some of the players about their careers and training regimes. Despite some strong vocal support, the Harlequins team went down to a narrow 22-29 defeat, but this did not spoil the students’ enjoyment.

Jack in Year 7 loved it, saying: ‘My favourite part was when scored a try in the practice game. It was also great to see really famous rugby players like Danny Care’.

Butterfly Bronwen flutters to National champion status

To get to English Nationals you have to be ranked 20-40th in the country (top 20 go to British).

‘I was entered for 50m butterfly with a time of 30.25,’ said Bronwen Price.

Weydon Year 10 and 11 players also enjoyed a tour of Bath (above) while other students actually got to greet Harlequins onto the pich for their match against Newcastle at The Stoop, a match Harlequins went on to win quite comfortably. A great day out all round!

The staff of legend as teachers triumph

‘I was hoping to scrape the final but ended up coming first out of the heats with a time of 29.15!

‘In the finals I beat my personal best again with a time of 28.97 to become English National Champion.

‘I am now ranked 8th in England and 11th in Britain,’ she said.

DERBY WINNERS: Weydon’s staff football team triumphed in a friendly over local rivals Heath End but it took them a penalty shoot-out to do it, leaving some of the more senior members of the team a little bit out of breath and aching..

Awesome leap of faith our pyramid explained

SPOrT is highly valued by students, parents and staff because of the huge, positive impact it can have on an individual’s life.

In the previous edition of Weydon World we reflected on the positive influence that sport can have physically, mentally and socially on people, at a time when activity levels are falling below government expectations.

WEYDON EXTRA-CURRICULAR MODEL COMPETITION PYRAMID 5 = Academy

We ran two gCSE residential climbing courses in January this year, with 64 students making their way up in the world. The courses are really helpful for those students wishing to use climbing as one of their GCSE practical activities and also offer a great outdoor and adventurous learning

opportunity for everyone taking part.

Ella in Year 11 said: “I was really apprehensive about getting up the big wall when I first saw it, but was really pleased when I made it.

The Friday night session when my group did the leap of faith challenge was also particularly memorable.”

PE teacher Fran Hamilton said: “Such a good experience for the students and really supportive for their GCSE grades.

“I love seeing the progress the students make in both their climbing skills and confidence levels in such a short period of time. You were awesome guys!”

Since 2012, the PE department has worked towards a shared belief of “Excellence for some, opportunity for all”, but what does this really mean? We’ve adapted a sports participation pyramid model to help us engage, then challenge and, finally, support students through their sport. The base layer of the pyramid shown here is all about getting students enthused and “into” sport by offering free and paid-for clubs for traditional sports AND activities like archery, wakeboarding, climbing, sailing, karate, and more, that take place before school, at breaktime, at lunchtime and after school. Trips to sporting events broaden students’ knowledge and love of different sports; for them to see good role models they can aspire to follow.

Tiers two and three of the pyramid expose students to competition in a fun

and friendly way through an inter-form programme. Students take part in selected activities in their core PE lesson at the end of each half term, with 20 different sports through the year.

Inter-college fixtures in key sports lead to a higher level of competition further supported by tier four, where students represent the school in B/C/D fixtures against each other and other schools.

At the top of the pyramid, students are chosen for the Academy team with higher levels of competition through County and

*Anything above 5 is representative sport

National competitions and training opportunities with guest coaches. Students selected to play representative sport are also supported. The department has run training days like sports psychology, nutrition, training, goal setting, etc. Inspirational guests have shared their stories with students. Weydon is being recognised by the county and nationally for the quality of its sport. It’s important to remember that the base underpinning this success is that we want to get everyone active and enjoying sport.

Harper: i challenge ALL Weydon students to give 100%.. and enjoy!

Following the lockdown we saw a hesitant return to sport for some of our students, whilst others have made the absolute most of the many opportunities available to them.

Although feel that I’ve been here for ever, only started Weydon in January of this year. I feel very privileged to be part of such a wonderful school and PE department. Originally from Godalming and having attended Godalming Sixth form College myself know the area well and am excited to be back.

My journey to PE was simple – i LOVEd iT and couldn’t see myself being anything else! I went to the University of Bath to study a degree in Sports Sociology and Coach Education (BA).

I then went on to do a PGCE in Physical Education and, later, a Masters in Education (MA).

I started teaching in 2010 at Amery Hill School in Alton where I did five years as a Head of Year.

I then landed a Director of Sport role at the British School of Chicago – an amazing experience!

On returning to the UK I worked in leadership roles at schools in London, Portsmouth and Winchester before getting the role here at Weydon.

As most students know I’m passionate about PE but especially football.

I was lucky enough to play for Southampton FC after university and then in Chicago when moved to the USA. My other sporting interests are netball and triathlons – and I’ve even cycled in Cuba!

As a Head of PE at Weydon I truly believe in our mission statement of “Excellence for some, opportunity for all”. We strive for all our students to have:

*A rich and varied curriculum

*Exposure to different sports and experiences

*Enjoyment and challenge – a love of learning

*Healthy active lifestyles and lifelong participation

*Opportunities for students to develop leadership team work, problem solving, resilience and integrity

*develop knowledge of motor competence and skills

*Experience competition, rules and tactics.

We are a growing department with more and more students taking GCSE PE every year – something that we hope continues.

I’d like to challenge all PE students to make sure they continue to show 100% effort and participation in lessons, make progress and enjoy sport.

“Excellence for some, opportunity for all”

it’s a scream as we see england beat Uganda

Back in October the PE team took a coach full of students to the Copper Box Arena in London to watch the England netball team take on and beat the Ugandan national team. The atmosphere was terrific throughout and the students really benefitted from seeing the best players in England performing live. Esme in Year 9 said: ‘What an atmosphere. We were all screaming for England each time they went on the attack. couldn’t believe how fast the players were. i hope i can be that good one day.’

Our experienced, dynamic and determined team will always be realistic and comprehensive, providing the advice to meet the needs of a growing business.

Youth is no barrier to speedy Kitty

Several Weydon students took part in the National Cross Country Championships at Bosleworth Castle in Chester. Despite being a year younger than many of her competitors, Kitty Dover finished a very creditable 61st in the Under-13s age category.

Scarlett Hooper crossed the line in 113th, Kiri Jobbins in 200th place and Lottie Pearson 208th.

Ski success

Weydon school skiing team at Surrey Schools Championships in Aldershot. Annabel Livingstone, Myles Fancy, Caspar Mellon-Hendry, Freddie Richins, Poppy Richins and Alice Thacker. Annabel, Myles and Freddie won the mixed team event with run times consistently in the mid-nine seconds. Well done!

Tired but happy.. students at the end of this year’s 24-hour Sportathon. The event raised over £5,000 to be used towards new equipment and in creating further sporting opportunities for students at Weydon. Participants competed in teams in over 20 different sports throughout the event. Emily in Year 9 said: ‘That was awesome. So much fun being with my friends overnight.’ Year 10 helper Joe said: ‘I couldn’t believe how much energy the students had - even at the end!’

As the sun rose on a Friday morning, the 24-hour timer started and Sportathon began its first hours with students and staff in the Weydon fitness suite for a thorough morning workout!

Through the day students were keeping the momentum high with PE lessons and then staff v student tennis at lunchtime…then at 3:30 the main challenge began.

The Sportathon teams united ahead of the remaining 15 hours of sporting adventures!

Evening saw teams going head-to-head in some of our tremendous sports. As the sun was setting three pointers were being scored in basketball, rounders were run and shots scored on the netball courts, football pitches and handball courts. The athletes were refuelled with a double dinner to replace spent energy and see them through a night of sport, including of course Mr Brown’s brilliant BBQ!

With only 10 hours to go, students competed in some tense tug of war battles and there wassome serious ducking and diving in the dodgeball matches. Others threw their shapes on the dancefloor.

From Danish long ball to cornhole, bench football to volleyball, it was spectacular sporting scenes through the night!

In the early hours, with justs four hours to go, the students competed against the infamous PE staff team in basketball where there was great team spirit and determination shown by all on the court!

When the clock struck six o’clock, the 24 hours were complete and the students gathered for a final congratulations and celebration of their hard work and amazing achievement.

Whilst exhausted and ready for bed they were riding high on endorphins and pride ready, to enjoy their weekend.

THE THingS STUdEnTS SAid:

‘Sportathon was such a great opportunity to interact with new people, creating new friendships.

I loved playing sports as a team especially basketball versus the teachers.’

‘I had a great time and would love to do it again and again!’

‘The Sportathon is a great way to try new sports and spend time with friends but also find new friends. It’s tiring but great fun’

‘It’s a great challenge to take part in and always love doing it!’

Thank you everyone who took part in Sportathon 2023. We look forward to seeing you next year!

Wake for it ..it’s time to take plunge Trebles all round! Man city welcome Weydon

WAKEY, WAKEY: Weydon students at lake

The Quays Wake and Ski at Mytchett Lake has seen Weydon students take the plunge, dunk n’ dive and even ollie ollie ollie!

The many water activities on offer all have crazy names to reflect the craziness - and fun - involved of course.

Every Wednesday and Friday a group of students have a wakeboarding lesson.

This activity makes up a third of the extracurricular water sports programme, which has included dinghy sailing and kayaking too.

Students of different abilities have been enjoying their six-week, after-school sessions with The Quays instructors, Mark and Greg.

Students have learned the basics like water starts, carving and corners to intermediate skills like jump starts, 180s and ollies, before moving onto even MORE impressive tricks like 360s, box obstacles, and kickers!

Progress from this year’s wakeboarders has been phenomenal, with almost everyone possessing the skills to try the obstacles by their last session. This is testament to how excellent the instruction from The Quays staff has been.

Daniel, Year 9, has especially enjoyed these sessions. ‘I’ve loved wakeboarding and learning so many new skills,’ he said. ‘I mastered so many tricks by the end.’

The Quays has been an after-school paradise for students providing the chance to go for a paddle board on the lake in between turns; relax in the evening sun with an ice cream and some sweets on the outside sofas; and take a turn on the cable. But getting dunked and trying new tricks is what everyone looks forward to the most!

U14 girls and Year 9 Boys A and B teams travelled to Manchester at the start of October half term to do a tour of Man United’s Old Trafford – the ‘Theatre of dreams’.

All three teams played local opposition and recorded positive results after some excellent games.

Lewis Wright and Jacob Wheeler were both awarded the boys Player of the Match awards, while Izzy Kandak received the girls award. Everyone then travelled to the Etihad Stadium to watch Man City beat Aston Villa.

Everyone had to wear Man City kit for this - the students raised their standards noticeably! After also visiting the Manchester Museum of Football, the group enjoyed an evening bowling.

number of gifts from the City Coaches who were really impressed by Weydon and Antionio went onto say: ‘The Weydon group were one of the best groups we have had this season. Great attitude and application, and prepared to listen’.

Year 9 PAL and Boys football lead, Jack Craven, said: ‘That was an awesome tour! The quality of the coaching at the City Academy was unreal. To have toured both stadiums and had the football experience these students have had will live long in the memory’.

director of Sport karl Brown and rowledge Cricket Club’s overseas player, Connor Cook (who’s been coaching at Weydon throughout summer term) took 20 students to watch Surrey play the second day of their county championship match against Lancashire at The Oval. They travelled to and from the Oval by train and enjoyed an excellent day’s play in the sunshine.

The aim of the trip was to boost the students’ understanding of tactics, but watching the best players in the land live is always inspiring in itself. Year 8 student Roshan said: ‘I loved being able to go onto the outfield with my mates for some fun games at the interval. We saw loads of Surrey players who signed autographs for us. i can’t wait to go back and play for school and my club again.’

Connor Cook said: ‘Opportunities like this are so good for the boys and girls. We saw some really good cricket today, and the students were really studying what the players were trying to do to gain an advantage.

‘The Oval is a special place and i look forward to seeing how the Aussies do in the final test there later in the summer.’

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS. Weydon U16s football team win the ESFA National Cup.

AnOTHEr incredible season was topped off with the trophy that Weydon got so close to last year.

Showing unbelievable resilience after last year’s semi-final disappointment, this fantastic group of boys won the ESFA national Cup in May at Stoke City’s Bet365 stadium.

Weydon U16 boys football team secured their second treble in two seasons. They were unbeaten in their league campaign before beating Oakmoor 2-0 in the District Cup at Aldershot Town’s EBB stadium with goals from Fabry and Varley.

It was then the big one - the National Cup final at Stoke.

After nine tough rounds, Weydon had one more hurdle to overcome. They

faced Samuel Whitbread from Bedford who had some excellent results in the build up to the final.

The squad travelled to Stoke the day before and were fully prepared to make Weydon history.

Prosser led the team out from the tunnel.

After several Samuel Whitbread attacks in the first few minutes, Weydon were on the counter attack. Pechev played in top goal scorer Thompson who had his shot parried into the path of Fabry to tap in and put Weydon 1-0 up.

Samuel Whitbread then produced wave after wave of attack on Jolley’s goal lead-

ing to their equaliser just before half-time. Weydon regrouped and matched their opponents in the second half. With one minute left to play, Samuel Whitbread won a corner. Their captain towered above the rest to put them 2-1 up.

Weydon pushed forward for the short time. Prosser launched a long throw into the box which was half-cleared back to him. He rifled into the top corner.

Penalties loomed.

Team boss Mr Allaway had picked his five takers. Chandler stepped up first and fired into the bottom corner. Jolley made himself big in the Weydon goal and

saved Samuel Whitbread’s first penalty. Bridger, Smith, Higgins and Conroy all scored with their kicks; Weydon won the shootout 5-3.

National Cup champions for the first time in the school’s history!

Top scorer Ben Thompson said: ‘This is the highlight of my time at Weydon.’

Mr Allaway said: ‘I could not be more proud of these boys on and off the pitch. They have worked so hard over the last five years and this is the perfect ending for us as a team.’

The team’s Weydon legacy provides the inspiration for future generations of footballers at the school to go and reach the heights of this team. The future is bright for Weydon football.
