Addax Petroleum Cameroon donates Medical Equipment Worth 109M to Douala Laquintinie Hospital

Cameroon’s Minister of Public Health on Friday, February 3, lauded the efforts of Addax Petroleum Cameroon Company in helping to improve on the quality of health care provided to Cameroonians. Dr Manouada Malachie was speaking at the Douala Laquintinie Hospital during the end of the Week of Excellence organized by the Medical Institution. The event also served as an opportunity to inaugurate medical equipment worth USD$ 200,000, the equivalent of about FCFA 109,000,000 donated to the Douala Laquintinie Hospital by Addax Petroleum Cameroon Company and its Joint Venture partners-Perenco Cameroon and SNH.

The donation comprised an anaesthetic machine with medical air compressor and oxygen analyzer, blood transfusion material, paediatric blood transfusion material, wall oxygen manometers, 10 dressing trolleys on wheels, 6 electronic baby scales and 25 endotracheal intubation tubes among 18 others critical apparatus. These instruments sourced for by Premier Medical Group have been installed at the hospital’s newly refurbished Neonatology Centre. During the event which also witnessed the presence of political and administrative officials of the Littoral region, the President General Manager of Addax Petroleum Cameroon said the donation is in line with the health orientation of his company’s corporate social responsibility programme which he described as critical in the relationship between the company and its host community.

Mr Bin Qu added “this donation is the outcome of a process which began several years ago. During a visit by a medical team of Addax Petroleum Cameroon Company, an assessment was carried out with the management during which it was revealed that the Laquintinie Hospital was in real need of Neonatology equipment. It was because of this that the company decided to upgrade the hospital by donating important equipment for the care of newborn babies. This batch is another piece of equipment destined to help the poor and underprivileged after our support in Maternity, Cardiology and Ear Nose and Throat”. The Addax Petroleum Cameroon boss also highlighted other recent achievements the company has registered in its relations with the community. They include but are not limited to donation of a complete equipment for the drilling laboratory of the University of Douala Polytechnique school and a complete geosciences

“By donating this equipment, we have established a solid relationship with the Laquintinie Hospital. I would like to strengthen this relationship with the signing of a Global Memorandum of understanding between the Institution and the Ministry. This Global Memorandum of understanding which includes other partners will establish the terms and conditions to govern participatory supervision of the new medical equipment we have provided to ensure sustainable use of the equipment” Bin Qu added. The Director of the Douala Laquintinie Hospital Prof. Noel Essomba lauded the efforts of Addax Petroleum Cameroon in helping to upgrade the status of the hospital for the past 7 years. To him Addax is doing what every good corporate citizen company should do. He also urged others to emulate their example.

After inspecting the installed equipment, Cameroon’s Minister of Public Health, Dr. Manaouda Malachie thanked Addax Petroleum for providing such state-of-the-art instruments which according to him “will go a long way to strengthen the healthcare system of the Douala Laquintinie Hospital”. He was accompanied during a guided tour of the Laquintinie Hospital by the Director of the health institution Prof. Essomba, the Governor of the Littoral Region Samuel Dieudonne Ivaha Diboua, the Chief of Representation of SNH Douala office Mme Claudine Manga, the Representative of the General Manager of Perenco Mr Wajiri, Addax Petroleum Cameroon Company Deputy General Manager and Director of Corporate Service Jessica Lengha Abega amongst other administrative, political, municipal, and traditional authorities of the Littoral Region.

While appreciating the gesture by Addax Petroleum Cameroon, Dr Manaouda Malachie implored other companies to follow the oil company’s example. To him, the donation worth 109 million is a huge investment in the healthcare system at the Laquintinie Hospital which will in no small way help to upgrade the standards of the health facility. The Director of the Douala Laquintinie Hospital also expressed gratitude to Addax Petroleum for the offer of equipment and hoped for more collaboration in the future.

Addax Petroleum Cameroon donates farm tools to the population of North Makombe

Addax Petroleum has offered farm tools and agriculture equipment to the population of North Makombe in the Nkam Division of the Littoral Region. The donation took place on Saturday April 30th,2022 in the presence of local authorities and the traditional rulers of the area.

An area reputed for its rich soils, the population of North Makombe mostly farmers have rarely had tools to help them carry out their activity in the most appropriate way. It was for this reason that they came together as an association and requested Addax Petroleum Cameroon Company provide support to them to foster their activities and improve their livelihood. The company then decided to respond positively by making available wheelbarrows, sprayers, boots, cutlasses, chain saw etc. So, Saturday April 30th,2022 was the date of the handover of the agriculture equipment during a mini cultural festival grouping some nine villages of the Dibom Canton.

During the second edition of the Ngandibom Festival in Ndotto Kwakwack North Makombe subdivision, the population from Bangope, Behack, Ndjouemouma, Ndotto-rong, Ndotto II, Ndotto III, Ndotto Kwakwack, Ndosson, Ndobian villages alongside members of the ‘‘Association des Diboms du Monde’’ better known by its French acronym (ADIM) from Douala, the West, North-West, and Littoral Regions all dressed in their blue-coloured traditional attires gathered to show their culture and agricultural potential. His Majesty Emmanuel Sany, Chief of Ndotto Kwakwack (host village), traditional chiefs of the 8 other villages with their notables, association delegates, and municipal counsellors were on

hand to give the ceremony the importance it deserves.

The events started with a short prayer from the pastor of the local church before His Majesty Emmanuel Sany gave his opening remarks. He welcomed the participants and reserved his loudest praise to Addax Petroleum Cameroon Company. He noted that 95 percent of the local population are involved in agriculture and that the donation of material from APCC to the various villages comes as a stitch in time. He added that the equipment will substantially boost output, thereby ameliorating the living conditions of a lot of inhabitants who were really struggling to work in their farms, due to lack of adequate farm tools. On her part, the President of ADIM Nathalie Sany expressed satisfaction with the support accorded by Addax Petroleum to the needy population and pledged that they will use it judiciously for the purpose which it was intended for. The Covid 19 pandemic she noted, had a damaging impact on the area and the equipment will help boost output. Patrick Bissi Penda, Corporate Social Responsibility Analyst handed over the 28 sprayer machines, a chainsaw, dozens of cutlasses, hoes, scores of gloves and boots and wheelbarrows worth several millions of Francs at the end of the event.

Addax Petroleum Production Trends

2021-2022

Within the period 2021-2022, Addax Petroleum Cameroon production has been slowly fluctuating because of several factors imposing deferment related to equipment failures, rig moves and subsurface issues. These have had an impact on the production in 2021 and 2022 as well.

The ongoing drilling campaign and the extensive maintenance program on the process facilities has helped to offset the natural decline of the fields.

The 2021 production year ended with an average daily oil rate of about 19,661 bopd and 18586 bopd in 2022, which represents a 5.5% decline.

2021 was a challenging year with a lot of failure issues sometimes related to reservoir performance and sometimes related to equipment (surface or subsurface). There were a lot of issues related to ESP premature failures and as a mitigation, management sought to change part of the ESP assembly or simply replace the whole assembly depending on the problem identified. In some cases, only a faulty penetrator had to be replaced to enable the

system to be re-run. Regardless of the source of the problem, the resulting effect is usually a drop in production. Also, several acid stimulation interventions were carried out on wells proven to be showing production decline due to the presence of acid removable scales that had settled on the near wellbore regions plugging formation pores. Usually, the removal of this scale restores the well’s permeability to originality with the well producing better than before. In pursuit of more barrels, some wells were converted from gas lift systems to ESP and they responded positively.

CORE BUSINESSES 14 / APNEWS 2023

2022 started with multiple challenges spanning from good producers suddenly having sand control failures, source water wells pump failures resulting in insufficient water injection volumes, ESP failures and scale interruptions. The ESP’s were repaired and acid stimulations performed in a number of wells. In another case, a tubing change-out brought back the well online. Worth noting is the fact that each time such failures are experienced, the impact on production is very tangible.

The drilling activity has helped to minimise the impact of the deferment on the overall production and set a good prospect for 2023.

2022-2023 DRILLING CAMPAIGN

The drilling campaign of Addax Petroleum Cameroon, which was intended to start in October 2021, finally started on January 28, 2022. A jack up rig from Borr Drilling, the Gerd, was hired for the drilling campaign. While there is no definite number of wells to be drilled yet, the initial contract duration is 12 months with an option to extend for another 12 months making a total of 24 months.

So far, six (6) new wells and six (6) sidetracks are planned for 2022-2023. New candidates could be added in the coming months in line with opportunities proposed by the Geoscience (G&G) Department and upon approval of Sinopec Head office.

The Borr Gerd jack up rig is a brand-new premium unit that has operated for 6 months only in Nigeria before moving to Cameroon and was stationed in Limbe in May 2020. The rig reactivation lasted about 4 months to check and certify equipment prior to mobilization on the first platform. During this period, Borr drilling recruited the rig crew and completed intensive training for the local personnel. Most of the local personnel recruited are already experienced but had not worked for the last two years on a drilling rig.

The rig was first mobilized on Alpha platform to drill two (2) new wells and one (1) sidetrack. The operations started on February 2, 2022 and was completed on May 11, 2022. The rig was then moved to Lima platform to drill two (2) sidetracks and one (1) new well for the Iroko association, APCL. The rig will be on the same platform for APCC, one (1) more well, Lima-15, and potentially a second well Lima 16 in case of success of Lima-15.

CORE BUSINESSES 16 / APNEWS 2023

It should be noted that the Padouk wells and Lima 15 are very challenging wells. Despite a good knowledge gained during the past drilling campaigns, it happens that some formations are now depleted which adds more challenges to the drilling operations.

Lima 15 is another category of well that is targeting the reservoir S5 with an expected pressure of 4000psi. If successful, this well could open the possibility for more wells in this reservoir. It would allow Addax Petroleum Cameroon to sustain its production in the coming years.

The rig will be moved to other platforms such as Kilo, India, Hotel and Delta.

This drilling campaign represents a significant investment from Addax Petroleum and its partners, the National Hydrocarbons Corporation SNH and Perenco Cameroon.

The Addax Petroleum Drilling Department was reshuffled to incorporate members from previous drilling campaigns, new experienced professionals, and colleagues from the Drilling Department of Sinopec in China.

The focus of the team is to ensure that the wells are safely drilled, and that performance is met to allow to drill the wells as per budget estimate (AFE).

An excellent teamwork within the team is already providing good results. We associate to the performance of the team, the other departments of Addax Petroleum for their support, and the contractors and suppliers that make all the efforts to make this drilling campaign a success.

The drilling campaign generates a lot of direct and indirect jobs in Cameroon which is very positive for the community and economy. The management also decided to invest in a training programme for local young professionals. Four trainees have been recruited after a selection process by the Drilling Department. The trainees gain experience on the rig occupying various positions and benefit to the access of an online training platform to develop further their theoretical knowledge.

Addax Petroleum Management is committed to making this drilling campaign a success and bring full support to the engineering and operations teams. Management is also supporting all actions that allow to improve the safety of the operations and the performance on the rig. It materialized for example, in renting a fast lock connector that allow a safer handling of the BOP while reducing time of nipple up and nipple down. The management is also supporting an HSE programme onboard with the participation of the rig crew towards safety.

This drilling campaign 2022-2023 is just a new stage to further developments being prepared for the future with some exciting possible development in the medium term. It should be recalled that the last drilling campaign of Addax Petroleum ended in September 2019 with the COSL Seeker rig.

On May 15th, the jack-up rig GERD from Borr Drilling was moved from Alpha to Lima platform.

Prior to the rig move, it has been identified that the flare on Lima would be a potential issue for the drilling operations. Several solutions were envisaged. Finally, a system of sprinklers was installed in a conjoint effort from the Facilities Department, Production Department, HSE Department, the drilling rig and the Drilling Department.

The sprinklers were installed on the flare and on the rig. It allows to reduce the heat generated from the flare to prevent overheating of equipment and safe working condition for the personnel. It works as per expectations.

Keeping the flare running allows to produce an extra 900 barrels. Over a 6 months period on Lima, it will be a significant production saving.

For SIMOPS operations, since it is not acceptable to keep the flare running in case a kick is experienced while drilling as the flare is closed from the rig. Accordingly, the SIMOPS matrix was modified from yellow to red for flaring during a kick for safer operations.

Thanks to a good teamwork, the system was delivered on time and as per expectations.

APCC Staff Improve knowledge of Dematerialise Stock Shares

Management of dematerised stock share in companies has become an important issue in companies in Cameroon. Since 2014 the government of Cameroon set out a law that required businesses especially those belonging to the group of Public Limited Companies (PLC) to dematerised their stock.

It was in a bid to ensure that Addax Petroleum Cameroon Company APCC and Addax Petroleum Cameroon Limited APCL meet this requirement that a two-day training was organised by the Legal and Compliance Department. Bringing together 10 staff from the Finance and IT and Legal and Compliance Departments, the training sought to help those in attendance better understand the movements of stock shares and the softwares used for management.

The seminar which held on June 6 and 7, 2022 at the Conference room of the Drilling Department had as resource persons Global Asset Cameroon, a firm specialized in the management of stock share and investments in Cameroon. Those in attendance were trained on the effective use of the Management of Operations of dematerialsed stock share software better known by its French acronym as System des gestions des operations des valeurs mobiliers dematerialize (SYSDEVAM). Valérie Toukou Djagueu was the main resource person during the training. According to her the training came as a stitch in time

“This training was and remains important for APCC simply because the process of dematerialization of securities is new in Cameroon. This training is very important because APCC chose to keep the accounts of its dematerialized securities itself, it acquired the function of custodian of its own issued shares and consequently is subrogated to the rights and obligations related to this new function towards the supervisory bodies (CAA, BECA/CRCT, COSUMAF and CACs) taking part in this process. This training has helped those concern to improve in the area by developing additional skills in order to better respond not only to the expectations of the above-mentioned bodies but also to acquire knowledge regarding the prospects offered by dematerialisation. The resource person said she was satisfied with the training and the level of understanding of the participants and the reaction of the key actors in the process within Addax Petroleum cameroon. “Since we started such trainings, we have rarely met such a dynamic and interesting team of trainees. We are happy with the mixture of those we trained 10 in number comprisingAccountants, Finance personnel and also legal minds. The quality of the exchanges, the questions asked and the recommendations made us to conclude that the subject was not only interesting but also well understood by all.

APCC and APCL have opted to manage the movement of their stock shares instead of bringing in a third party to manage it. In spite of this, Global Asset Cameroon will assist the company for the next four years in ensuring the smooth functioning of the system after which the company will assume full control of the entire process.

Interview

Henri Same Douala Legal & Compliance Manager

Question: How relevant was the training on the Management of dematerialised stock share in companies

Answer: The training was quite interesting for all the participants and it has helped us to understand better the dematerialization of shares process, the objectives of OHADA and CEMAC sustaining the dematerialization of shares stocks, the role that each participant will play on the daily basis, the legal implications behind for those in charge of the management, the rights and obligations of shareholders, the rights and obligations of the Statutory auditors and the consequences of documents generated for the company.

Question: I am aware that a law was put in place since 2014 by the government on the management of dematerialized stock share in companies. Why is this training taking place only now within Addax Petroleum Cameroon?

Answer: In fact, despite the enactment by Cameroon of the dematerialization of shares stocks in 2014, the process itself was not yet mandatory and companies were a bit reluctant since this concern sensitive issues: the share capital of the company and especially the ownership of shares. The physical certificates are going to disappear and dematerialize. The shares may circulate freely from one shareholder to another

through the stock market. We should be very careful in this new process in order to avoid shareholder losing their shares without their prior approval.

Question: What’s the role of the third party Global Asset Cameroon in the Management of APCC and APCL stock share

Answer: Global Asset Cameroon, is not involved in the management of APCC and APCL stock shares. This Firm is just our trainer in the process and has helped us to buy a software which is approved by CAA.

Question: Anything to add?

Answer: This is additional work and considering it’s a new process provided by the law, all involved in the process must be very prudent when doing their part of job on a daily basis to avoid negative impacts that can lead to serious legal damages for the company and shareholder. We will like the Management to consider this aspect as job load with very high impact. Taxes can no longer be paid by companies if they are not in possession of Attestation of dematerialization. This is the key message behind when we know penalties that could result from non-payment of taxes.

Key offshore training for Addax Petroleum Personnel

Employees of Addax Petroleum Cameroon Company (APCC) have undergone vigorous training in safety and safe work. The Basic Offshore Safety Training and Emergency Training (BOSIET) was carried out at the National Offshore Institute of Australia and America Limited in Limbe, Cameroon.

Some 62 staff working offshore and onshore for Addax Petroleum Cameroon went through the various aspects of the course which involved sea survival, firefighting and rescue between March and May 2022 and were split into various groups. Each group went through a week of the course that involved both theory and practical. The OPITO-approved BOSIET (Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training) with Compressed Air Breathing System (CA-EBS) course provides the delegate with a range of knowledge and skills relevant to travelling offshore by helicopter and working offshore, including safety induction, fire safety and basic firefighting; first aid; using a CA-EBS; helicopter safety and escape; and survival at sea.

The main objective of the exercise is to curb hazards so staff and contractors working offshore can carry out their daily activities in a safe manner and also to enhance the safety culture. Chrispin Janten, HSSE Manager reckons safety remains a priority for Addax Petroleum Cameroon “It is Addax Petroleum Cameroon’s Training specification that employees, contractors and, in some cases, visitors must undertake this training prior to travelling offshore. This training provides employees with a basic understanding and awareness of the hazards encountered during travel to offshore installations and the emergency procedures to be followed after an offshore incident.”

undergo BOSIET training and put it in practice survive hazards. Joseph Libong is the Offshore Installation Manager of Addax Petroleum Cameroon Company. According to him the BOSIET training is relevant for all actors in the oil and gas industry “I think it was timely. It was good for those who had done it before a refresher and for the first time. It was looking at the minimum standard of HSSE. The basic firefighting, how to evacuate and a complete understanding of important safety skills offshore”.

Sycamore General Manager – Middle East & Africa Operations at the National Offshore Institute of Australia and America Limited (NOIAA LTD) noted that the importance of the training to a company like Addax Petroleum cannot be overstated “The contents of the BOSIET training provided for Addax Petroleum by National Offshore Institute of Australia and America Limited (NOIAA LTD) is very important in terms of its potential to save lives. The trainees of Addax Petroleum have benefitted a great deal, I would say in terms of understanding the different types of safety equipment available to offshore workers and its correct use as well as the most up to date survival techniques (Sea Survival). Not to mention basic knowledge of First Aid/Fire Fighting and Safety Induction & TEMPSC (Totally Enclosed Motor Propelled Survival Craft) refreshers.”

The entire training focused on enlightening the participants on the basic insights of activities in the oil and gas sector, creating awareness on the basic principles for survival and adopting the right attitude during evacuation. Matilda Mbome, Head of Safety and Environment, believes the training comes as a stitch in time “the Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (BOSIET) is essential for all individuals working or wishing to travel offshore. The BOSIET course enables delegates to gain basic knowledge of specific safety issues relevant to offshore installations and an understanding of emergency response on an offshore installation and during helicopter transit. It is very important for our work and I hope those attending will take full advantage of it.”

In the oil and gas sector statistics indicate that over 90% of those who

Onshore staff who do regular trips offshore for work were also entitled to do the course which many describe as relevant. Described as necessary “This training helped me in two ways, the first was in raising my awareness in Oil and Gas work environment (transportation to/from offshore, sea, platforms) hazards, mitigation and survival techniques. On the other hand (business side) it gave me more tips that will help in upcoming personnel mobilization related to our projects” said Gabriel Monkam, Junior Engineer of the Facilities team. The course attended by 61 participants was a mix of theoretical and practical sessions, during which delegates were required to demonstrate their level of knowledge and understanding of the training programme content. An OPITO-approved Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training certificate was issued to all participants upon successful completion of the course.

Emergency preparedness: Addax Petroleum deploys Oil Spill Response equipment

Addax Petroleum Cameroon Company in 2022 attained one of the key milestones in emergency preparedness by deploying the Oil spill Response equipment at sea. It was the first time in the history of the group that such exercise has been carried out and saw the participation of all the key actors of the process within the company. The Oil Spill Response equipment deployment was carried by APCC from November 20 to November 25, 2022, under the supervision of the Oil Spill Response Limited (OSRL) and went on incident free with the HSSE team praising the efforts put in to make it happen.

Chrispin Janten, HSSE Manager said “2022 will always be remembered as the year of a breakthrough in the realization of many projects that like hard nutshells difficult to crack have been pending for years. One of such projects was the deployment of the Oil Spill response equipment at Sea. I am incredibly proud of what we accomplished so is my team. As a matter of fact, this exercise was a grand premiere in the entire Addax community.”

Experts Andy Nevin and Jonathan Beaumont travelled to Douala from the US under the Annual Preparedness Review (APR) agreement which allows OSRL members ten days OSRL support free of charge to assist in an oil spill tabletop exercise, equipment training and a full offshore deployment near the area where Addax Petroleum carries out its operations.

The main aim of the exercise was to assist in developing and delivering the oil spill tabletop exercise, carry out equipment checks and training on Addax offshore equipment, ensuring a full functional check of Addax offshore equipment, supervise the offshore deployment using Addax equipment and deliver a OSRL Annual Preparedness Review (APR).

The deployment was carried out using the vessel Bourbon Liberty and a Ro-boom training carried out involving the various actors. The training started with a toolbox talk conducted by Addax Petroleum staff on the deck of the Bourbon Liberty to all personnel involved in the exercise. The boom deployment procedure was explained thoroughly to all onboard along with the safe connection process of all the system ancillaries such as hydraulic hoses, air fan hose and towlines etc. Manoeuvring of the vessel throughout the deployment were pre- discussed with the Captain and Chief Mate prior to deployment. Once on deck, the container doors were opened, the hydraulic hoses were secured and connected from the powerpack to the boom reel and, the air hose and the air chamber caps were prepared for use. The first towing line was fleeted on the craft deck ready for deployment whilst the second towing line was being made ready on the port side.

Members of the deployment team were then assigned roles and responsibilities for the deployment. Most of the Crew were new to the system therefore to ensure participating members safety and consolidate their understanding of the equipment, the exercise was run in slow time. During the deployment and recovery, the Oil spill Response team emphasized the value of teamwork, good communication between the deck and bridge (to correct vessel heading), and speed control could significantly assist a deployment.

SAFETY 26 / APNEWS 2023

Throughout the exercise, several techniques concerning boom handling were discussed and explained. Clear instructions were given towards the importance of fleeting the boom correctly to the reel during recovery. On completion, the hydraulic systems were shut down and the power pack left running on idle for five minutes to allow for cool down. It was at this point the crew saw how to depressurise the system pre-disconnecting. The hydraulic hoses were disconnected and the QRC’s treated with WD40. All towing lines and hoses were coiled and stowed ready for next deployment. A PowerPoint presentation was used to demonstrate the step by step set up of the equipment as per manufacturer’s guidelines. The boom deployment procedure was explained thoroughly along with the safe connection process of all the system ancillaries such as hydraulic hoses, air fan hose and towlines etc. third parties were very professional I what they were doing.

Top Management including the President General manager, Bin Qu actively participated in the meetings prior to the deployment offshore while the Deputy General Manager/Director of Corporate Services was on hand for the deployment offshore.

Peter Gobina, Head of Offshore Operations who was acting as the Offshore Installation Manager (OIM) at the time noted “It was well done. It is the first time we are deploying the oil spill response equipment offshore and it is good that we have the experience with it. That the end users we are see and experience how it works. We need a full deployment. Emergency will never announce itself but when it comes, we need to be prepared.”

For the Operations Manager Dickson Ebai, the deployment of the Oil Spill Response equipment at sea is a stitch in time “the deployment of the Oil Spill Response equipment if very important. The risk of spill is a challenge in a business like ours. An oil spill can cause damage to the company’s reputation if not properly managed. So, the deployment is to ascertain our readiness which is commensurate with the risk we may face”.

Addax Petroleum organises Defensive Driving Lessons to Improve Safety

The increased number of accidents on the roads in Cameroon has made transport officials to start looking for ways and means of curbing its occurrence. Many companies with a large fleet of vehicles have in the recent past been encouraged to help their drivers go through refresher courses to improve their alertness. It was in a bid to meet up with the regulation that Addax Petroleum contracted APAVE Cameroon to train its staff in defensive driving.

Some 47 staff took part in the refresher course that was conducted at the APAVE Cameroon Training Centre in Bonapriso, Douala. The trainees are company drivers and all those who have been assigned company cars who are expected to take the course every other year. The main aim being to help them remain aware of what's happening around them as the best way to be able to anticipate what other drivers might do and take timely action to stay safe. This is the fundamental principle of defensive driving.

Guy Motchebe was the main resource person during the training. The Defensive Driving expert drilled the trainees on how to overcome negative psychological factors such as unneeded stress, fatigue, emotional distress and road rage. He noted that once this has been attained the driver will have the full control of his wheel.

APCC, Dispatcher, Virgilius Chindo, on his part noted the regulatory framework of the training. “It is important because it helps refresh the drivers things we already know. Because this is a course that we do once after every two years. It is mandatory for any driver using a company car” Statistics show that defensive driving techniques reduce the likelihood of a collision or incident and save costs related to vehicle maintenance and fuel consumption, by driving smoothly and steadily. It also amongst other things:

• Reduces driving risks. With defensive driving, you can easily anticipate dangerous situations and you will be able to avoid risks that may occur. ...

• Improves driving skills. ...

• Accident-free techniques. ...

• Maximum protection. ...

• No violation charges. ...

• Less maintenance. ...

• Save on insurance cost.

The training programme which ran from February to March has a focus on zero accident, zero incident.

Addax Petroleum obtains ISO 14001 2015 Recertification

Addax Petroleum Cameroon Compaany APCC has been Re certified for ISO 14001: 2015, following an Audit of APCC Environmental Management System (EMS) by DNV (external certification body). The decision to recertify the company came weeks after the organisation performed an audit of Addax Petroleum facilities both onshore and offshore. The scope of the certificate covers our Onshore and Offshore activities with a focus on environmental management.

During the audit which held from March 14th through March 18th 2022, Aboulseoud Alla El Din, while thanking everyone for their support during the Audit, noted the important steps the company is making to comply with international environmental norms. The ISO 14001 it should be noted, is the internationally recognized standard for environmental management of businesses. It prescribes controls for those activities that have an effect on the environment. It is used to certify the quality of company’s Environmental Management System.

The benefits of the ISO 14001: 2015 certification include but not limited to: Verification of compliance with current legislation, insurance cover more accessible; Improvement of corporate image among regulators, customers and the public; Building of awareness of environmental concern amongst employees; Reduction of environmental liability.

Following the re-certification we sat down for a chat with the Health Safety Security & Environment, HSSE Manager, Chrispin Janten. His remarks:

How Important is the ISO Re certification for APCC?

The ISO 14001 recertification for APCC is the proof if there was a need that the company has inexorably opted for sustainability. Since ISO 14001 is a set of international requirements related to Environmental Management System, the fact that we have retained it guarantees that we operate in compliance with global standards for business.

From the last time the audit was here how did you work to close the gaps?

After the last DNV surveillance audit done prior to the recertification, there was an audit corrective action plan that was developed and agreed upon with the various actions owners. Follow-up meetings were organized and the HSSE team worked with the various departments involved in a regular basis. We also obtained the support of the Head of Departments under the objective of one team one goal.

What’s the way forward after this milestone was retained?

As you know, an audit is to help for continual improvement. We will first work to close all the actions raised from the last recertification audit, no matter their significance. We will continue creating awareness on the importance of the environment and why we should take good care of it. More importantly we will endeavor to put in place a solid environmental system that is compliant with our national laws and industrial best practices

Any last word or is there anything you wanted to say that we did not ask?

I would like to thank the management for its strong commitment without which this recertification wouldn’t happened. It is a proof of leadership to support this initiative that has been in place since year 2000. Though the HSSE Department is the one driving this process, the certification is not an award for the HSSE Department, it is your Award, it is everybody’s award. It is a reward for the company recognizing a team effort.

Over 30 personnel of Addax Petroleum Cameroon have taken part in the first edition of a training under the label “APCC Fun Learning 123”.

Hosted by Dr. Fuping Zhu, the seminar is part of the Company strategy on knowledge transfer of technologies and competencies and following the 1, 2, 3 format meaning:

1-hour seminar/webinar per announcement, 2nd day of the week (Tuesday) at 3 pm. The first of the Seminars was held on Tuesday, August 09, 2022, at 3:00pm with Dr. Fuping Zhu, subsurface subject matter expert providing an overview on the topic “Why do Addax Petroleum’s Reserve numbers matter and how do we know how much?”.

According to her, the amount of reserves a company possesses in the extractive industry helps it to make informed decisions about its future and the wellbeing of its employees. Statistics about oil and gas reserves are also important for the government to make critical decisions about the development of the country.

TRAINIG AND DEVELOPMENT 34 / APNEWS 2023

This first session hosted both technical and non technical staff. The non technical workers obtained some interesting insights on core business issues, while Technical staff had deep discussions on Addax Petroleum reserves and what it means for the business. Florian Njapou, Asset Integrity Projects Technician said “ it was a very interesting seminar as I learnt a lot of things during my time there”. For Derick Mamubah, Junior Production Technologist, the training was very relevant “the fun learning seminar with Dr Zhu was quite educative and informative. Knowing the reserve numbers and how they impact the business gave me a vivid picture of the entire oil and gas business interests and major players. Noel Musongong Akum of the HSSE Department reckons such seminars help to bridge the knowledge gap on some aspects of the business “It was an amazing session and extremely helpful in understanding the answers to the questions to the seminar subject: “Why do Addax Petroleum’s Reserve numbers matter and how do we know how much?”. It was a great way to move away from HSSE and understand the other business entities. Thanks to the organizing team and Dr. Fuping. Please organize more. He added.

GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITYAddax Petroleum Cameroon begins Young Professionals Programme

Addax Petroleum Cameroon Company has embarked on the first phase to train Cameroonians from school in the engineering/technical field and give them the opportunity to acquire skills and integrate the sector.

The Young Professionals Development Programme (YPDP) which began in 2022 is built as an apprenticeship that proposes a unique opportunity to “Learn by Doing” while the company carries out high standard drilling operations between Q4 2021 to Q4 2023. The opportunity to participate in the initiative is given to new graduates or young professionals with maximum five (5) years’ experience from the date of graduation in the Oil & Gas industry or any other industry. This programme is oriented towards the drilling activities of the company. It aims to be a launching pad for a career development in various positions in the Energy industry.

Four graduates with technical and engineering degrees are taking part in the pilot phase of the programme and so far they seem to be enjoying their time at the facilities. George Elambo Nkeng is one of them and now tells us about his experiences so far “It’s a hands-on job because it’s for those who just graduated from school and have less than five years’ experience. It’s been extraordinary to say. We have gone through HSSE which in the engineering field is important. It is always safety first. It’s a Sinopec and Addax Policy that there are no incidents on the job. So, with that we came in for our first hitch and did Bosiet which is basic offshore training. We work in the middle of the sea so its important we know how to swim. We started with safety coaches on board to learn how safety works as there are procedures we must follow, and which are important even when we leave here. From there we went to the rig floor which is hectic. It is not easy. We got our hands dirty.”

TRAINIG AND DEVELOPMENT 36 / APNEWS 2023

The YPDP focuses on building skills for individuals that will allow them to play a future role in the drilling or other technical fields of Addax Petroleum or with service companies. The company seeks to take advantage of the duration of the drilling campaign to impact the necessary skills on the beneficiaries. William Ngoun is another candidate of the programme and says his time in the rig so far has been worthwhile “we have two years here to learn drilling. When I came to Addax I started with the rig. Right now, we are on Padouck on Lima. The experience in school helped me. When you come you cannot just come on board. We started with our Bosiet, induction to safety. And my second shift was on the drilling floor. There we encountered too many practical things like swingling, drilling operations with tools and equipment and we did our best to take the work from point zero to the next point. Then we went to the Mud area. That is what we do daily.”

The overall objective of the programme is to allow the candidates to develop their skills by evolving through various positions over a period of eighteen (18) months (6 Quarters). The candidates will then be evaluated in a multicultural environment. This “Bottom up” concept involves candidates participating in operations with contractors of Addax, such as drilling contractors or other service companies engaged in the operations. The ultimate objective of this apprenticeship is to maximize time spent in the field on day-to-day operations in a safe way. Distance learning is also provided to allow trainees further develop their technical and engineering knowledge. An assessment of the progress of each candidate is made regularly and at the end of each phase of the programme in order to ensure that set objectives are met. It is anticipated that the program will include mandatory external HSE training, internal training “on the job training” and access to the SINOPEC drilling school in the future for the most successful candidates.

One of their supervisors in the training is John Francis Fonkou who works as a pumpman in the Gerd Rig carrying out operations in Mokoko Abana and Iroko fields. He says there is much room for improvement. “I have been working with William and George for some time now and I can assure you we have gone through a lot of things regarding what concerns my department as a pumpman. Presently we are here in what we refer to as a sack store, a place where we store chemicals. These chemicals are used to obtain drilling fluid, as per the mud engineer’s programme. So all this while, I have been showing them what to do, how to mix chemicals and explain the role of the outcome in the drilling process”. For Joel Kamlo, Mud Engineer, the trainees are on the right path “First of all, I make them understand the primary function of well control is the mud. So the Mud Engineer has a very important function in the rig. We always need the Mud Engineer on the rig. That’s why we are two on the rig, one person works in the night and the other during the day and we work back-to-back. So, what I teach them is the basics of the Mud Engineering job. What he or she does every day. When the Mud Engineer arrives at work, he checks the pit and ask himself is there enough mud volume to drill the section? If there isn’t then he’s got to mix more mud depending on the programme given him from the Project Engineer and signed by all the parties including Addax Petroleum. So, I follow the programme to mix the mud.”

Their overall supervisor An lei who is Deputy Drilling Manager hopes by the time they complete their stay, the skills acquired will enable them better fit in whatever operations or project, in the oil and gas field. Successful trainees also have the opportunity to get into the SINOPEC Drilling School in the future.
