PERFORMANCE NOTES

“Musik for to Ensembler” part I + II / Version I-V (1-5)

“Music for Two Ensembles” Parts I & II / Versions I - V

Værket kan spilles i fem versioner: Vers. I (den “originale”) består af satserne I og II spillet i den givne rækkefølge. Vers. II fremkommer ved at gentage del I efter del II. Vers. III udgøres af del I alene. Vers. IV er del II spillet alene. Vers. V er de to dele spillet i omvendt rækkefølge: II - I. Kammerensemblet og Big Bandet bør sidde som to adskilte ensembler på scenen.

The work can be played in following five versions: 1: Parts I & II 2: Parts I & II & I 3: Part I 4: Part II 5: Parts II & I The two Ensembles should on stage appear as two separate Ensembles

“Musik for to Ensembler” indeholder en række forskellige typer musik, der udfoldes såvel samtidigt som efter hinanden. Indlysende er der bl.a. tale om en “jazzet” musik overfor en “klassisk”. De tematiske motiver og gestalter, der sættes an i åbningens veritable “Big Bang”, varieres og udbygges værket igennem. Musikkens bevægelse går fra aktivitet til stilstand i del I. Og denne bevægelse vendes i del II: Så i en hvis forstand burde del II komme først, da indholdet i åbningens totalmusik her gradvist præsenteres. Ja, ved del II´s slutning er vi faktisk fremme ved del I.s åbning. I hvert fald i nogle af instrumenterne. Samtidig tager del II tråden op fra visse ukommenterede mærkepæle fra del I. Så derfor må den vel ligge som den ligger....Altså efter del I.

“Music for Two Ensembles” contains different kinds of music which are played both simultanously and one after the other. Obviously the piece deals with the issues, amongst others, of ‘jazzy’ versus contemporary ‘classical’ music. But hopefully something else emerges as well - without turning into a kind of soft third stream music.

Musikken handler altså ikke kun om stilarter men nok så meget om form, og dermed tid. Og tidsoplevelsens varianser afhængigt af den musikalske informationsmængde pr. mikrosekund. En informationsmængde, der varierer fra det praktisk talt uopfattelige til stort set ingenting. Og information er jo ikke bare information. I musik opleves visse dele ofte som “hovedsagen” mens andet er “baggrund” eller “overledning”. Denne skelnen lader sig ikke gennemføre overalt i “Musik for to Ensembler”, som udgøres af en musik, hvor det ikke altid er sikkert hvem, der “har melodien” eller er den, der giver bolden videre. Eller om en særlig gestalt nu har udspillet sin rolle eller blot holder pause. Og hvor lang tid kan der egentlig gå efter en pause uden det, der spilles er noget nyt og ikke en genoptagelse og derved fortsættelse af en musikalsk linjeføring. Forhåbentligt er alt dette præsenteret i en moderne underholdende musik, der lader det hele glide igennem ørerne uden, at man overhovedet behøver tænke på det. Forhåbentligt.........?
