Amy Evans

The Most Unsatisfied Town Since claiming asylum in Germany, Laurence has had to start his life over again. He’s found the formula for survival, or so he thinks, until one day his closest friend mysteriously disappears. When the body turns up charred beyond recognition, a search for those responsible begins, forcing Laurence to take a closer look at the town he was so ready to call home. Based on the true story of Oury Jalloh.

Background

the auther: Amy Evans is an award-winning dramatist whose work explores the impact of borders, memory, and loss on the human spirit. Her plays include Achidi J’s Final Hours (Finborough Theatre), Many Men’s Wife (Tricycle Theatre), and The Champion, an original work inspired by the life of Nina Simone.

In the early hours of January 7th, 2005, Oury Jalloh, a man seeking asylum from Sierra Leone, was apprehended by German police authorities after allegedly harassing a group of female street cleaners in the small East German town of Dessau. He underwent a pat-down search and a blood test, and was then shackled by his hands and feet to the floor of a cell furnished with nothing other than a fireproof mattress. Several hours later a fire broke out in the holding facility. Police authorities neglected to respond to fire alarms in a timely manner, and Oury Jalloh was left to burn to death in his cell. In addition to gruesome burn injuries, an independent autopsy of Jalloh‘s remains revealed a broken nose, apparently overlooked by the Dessau coroner‘s examination. Three years later two, of the police officers on duty at the time of the incident were prosecuted on charges of wrongful death. The defense argued that Oury Jalloh had intentionally set himself alight with a cigarette lighter concealed in his clothing. After a trial lasting over fifty days, the police officers were acquitted of any wrongdoing. The Initiative Oury Jalloh, an organization founded by friends and family of the victim, appealed the verdict, insisting that the trial in Dessau had been mishandled. Five years to the day of Oury Jalloh‘s death, the Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe overturned the verdict and re-opened the case against the police. This unprecedented decision has brought urgent attention to the contentious triangle of asylum policy, racism, and police brutality in Germany and in the European Union as a whole.

Homestory Deutschland Black Biographies in Historical and in Present Times

the editor:

The German language exhibition ›Homestory Deutschland‹ is a collective self-portrait of Black people in Germany. The exhibition contains pivoting panels that have portrait pictures on one side, and personal stories on the other. The accompanying catalogue revives the interactive experience of the exhibition. As a parallel to the turning of the panels, an action that requires visitors to physically interact with the exhibition, the pages of the catalogue need to be separated in order that the personal stories contained within them can become visible. The German-language catalogue will appear for the first time in the Witnessed Series in English translation

Also by mail “Also by Mail“ is a modern family comedy-drama that follows the experiences of Nigerian German siblings Funke and Wale who fly to Nigeria to bury their suddenly deceased father. Their upbringing clashes with their uncle’s expectations and initial misunderstandings soon come to an éclat. When Wale returns to Germany, frustrated, he is bitterly reminded of how little his father acknowledged and prepared them for racist encounters there. Loss and racism, sibling rivalry and cross-cultural etiquette, the play incorporates and subverses its urban, neo-African elements of story-telling to give a contemporary picture of a family that struggles not only with the legacy of its patriarch but with being racialized within the German context as well. Where does each stand in a circle of relations and needs? Where does each want to end up? And who is willing to help? It takes an inside-outside job to lighten the mood and the surprise startles them all.

“Institutional racism is part of being Black in Germany and racial profiling exemplifies one of these untold, silenced German stories. Also by Mail provides an understanding of how quickly a normal train ride can take a turn for the worse. Black people living in Germany have to familiarize themselves with these police measures, even more so if they are male. For Black boys, growing up in Germany increasingly means being seen to be a “threat” to society – to be reduced to stereotypical images.“ Jamie Schearer and Hadija Haruna Initiative Schwarze Menschen in Deutschland (ISD-Bund) e.V.

the editors plus Sharon Dodua Otoo The painter and conceptual artist Sandrine Micossé-Aikins deals with questions concerning identity and belonging, exclusion and (self) empowerment. Starting from her experience as a Togolese-German artist, who studied and worked in Mauritius, among other places, she combines various art forms to question facets of identity, ascriptions and unequal power relations. In 2008/09 she co-curated and supervised the project Prèt-à-Partager for the German Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations. Sandrine Micossé-Aikins completed the Master program “Art in Context” at the University of Arts in Berlin.

The Little Book of Big Visions How to Be an Artist and Revolutionize the World German theatres still have almost exclusively white ensembles and Afro-German visual artists continue to struggle for recognition free of labels like “African” or “migrant” – even in 2012. “The Little Book of Big Visions: How to be an Artist and Revolutionize the World,” edited by Sandrine Micossé-Aikins and Sharon Dodua Otoo, discusses the current situation of Black artists in Germany and presents their visions for equality in text and image form. This results in an innovative work engaging in a discourse reaching far beyond concepts of “integration” or “migration” – or even “race” or “equality” themselves. This anthology is aimed primarily at Black cultural producers living and working in Germany, as well as those who reside in Englishspeaking contexts throughout the diaspora. However, this book is also aimed at everyone who has an interest in revolutionizing the contemporary art scene in Germany and ensuring that it finally begins to be truly reflective of its actual and future populations.
