Edison Language Academy – Together Through Two Languages (310) 828-0335 www.edison.smmusd.org
ANNOUNCEMENTS School Smarts Academy – Sign up now to secure a space in this 7-week parent leadership academy. School Smarts helps parents learn how to be effectively involved in their child’s schooling – as partners and advocates. The seminars are presented bilingually and will be held Thursday mornings 8:30-10:00 am beginning September 28. Return one of the blue School Smarts forms to the office or contact Yoly Gutierrez at ext. 61-305 or email her at ygutierrez@smmusd.org if you would like to grab one of the spots. Edison Fall Bookfair –There’s still time to sign up as a volunteer and help at the Edison Fall Bookfair. There’s a sign-up sheet by the PTA bulletin board and we still need help! Find a couple of hours where you can sign up and help cover a shift. Committee members will show you what to and it’s a wonderful way to meet other Edison families, see the best in children’s literature in Spanish and English AND raise funds that go toward building and maintaining our own library collection. Sign up today! Food Sales at School Events – There will be dinner for sale before both Back to School Nights. 5th grade parents will prepare and serve the food on August 29 and 2nd grade families on September 5. The idea is to provide reasonablypriced food for those who are coming straight from work and for those who want to come a bit early, break bread together and share some fellowship with other families. We share the responsibilities among parents at various grade levels so we all have a chance to help host and prepare foods from various traditions. Menus vary depending on the group of parents who organize but there are always vegetarian options.
Support the SMM Education Foundation AND the Edison PTA – Return the envelope in your opening day packets and donate to both these important organizations.
Blue Dog Sale Starts September 6
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK:
DROPPING OFF AND PICKING UP STUDENTS I want to start our school year by sharing some information and suggestions about how to get your children safely to school and back home again. Whatever means you use to get your children to school, please make time for them to have breakfast and spend a few minutes sending these kinds of messages: “I love you. I’m proud of you. Try your best. Be kind to others. The work you do at school is important and I want to hear about it.” The cafeteria opens for breakfast at 7:45 am if you want your children to eat here – and remember, if your family qualifies for school lunch assistance it also applies to breakfast. Young brains need morning nutrition! If you live close enough to Edison to walk to school, please do! You may be able to pick up neighborhood children along the way and form a “walking carpool,” or meet up with other parents and walk together. Walking also gives you the opportunity to teach and model pedestrian safety. If you live at a distance and have to drive to school, scout out a place to park that’s not too far from campus where you can park and walk to campus You get those extra steps in the morning, a chance to spend a little more time with your child, and reduce pollution and the traffic around school. Consider biking to school with your child! Please make sure your children wear helmets (and model that behavior by wearing one yourself!). We have bike racks near the cafeteria and PTA Health and Safety VP Ferris Kawar can help you with information about safe routes to school (Edison.pta.health.and.safety@gmail.com). If you drive to campus with your children, consider this – you have a captive audience! Declare your car a “Spanish only” zone, share family stories, do your religious education, skip count as high as you can go, play “I Spy,” debrief their school day, and just talk to your child! If are dropping off your child from the car, use only the drop off zones on Virginia and Kansas Avenues. We have staff working as safety valets in each area to help your child from the car into the school. On Virginia Avenue, you will see Sra. Ofelia Rodriguez and on Kansas Avenue, Sr. Israel Valdivia will assist students. Do not drop children on the opposite side of the street and ask them to jaywalk through traffic. PLEASE DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES PARK IN OR DROP OFF STUDENTS IN THE STAFF PARKING LOTS. Having additional cars in the Kansas Avenue parking lot (even for a few minutes!) blocks Food Service trucks and emergency vehicles and taking a staff parking place causes staff and substitutes to be late to work with your children. Let’s make it a safe year! Monday, Sept. 4 Labor Day Holiday School Closed
