FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK:

WELL RESTED AND READY TO LEARN! It is always exciting to greet our continuing students and families and to welcome the nearly 120 new students and families that are beginning their immersion adventure at Edison. Please join me in reaching out and helping the new families feel welcome and get involved in our community! The transition from summer back to school is a big one for students – new teachers and classmates, new things to learn, getting accustomed to being back on a “school schedule.” There are several things that parents can do to help children make a successful transition back to school. RE-ESTABLISH ROUTINES –Young children generally function better with predictable structure and routine. If children have been staying up later and getting up later in the summer, start to re-establish their school sleep routines a week before school begins. Remember that children’s brains and bodies are still growing and they need a lot more sleep than adults do. Aim for 10-11 hours of sleep each night. While adults who haven’t had enough sleep may appear sleepy and lethargic, often children who are tired appear to be hyperactive, distractible and grouchy – hardly the best state for learning at school! START THE DAY WITH A HEALTHY BREAKFAST -- Whether it’s at home or at school – make sure your child has had breakfast before school. If your family qualifies for school lunch assistance, you also qualify for breakfast. And even if your children don’t usually eat in the cafeteria, it’s a good idea to have a little “emergency money” on their lunch card so they don’t skip breakfast if you’re running late. Young brains need morning nutrition! SEND YOUR CHILD OFF ON A POSITIVE NOTE -- The way students start the school day makes a big difference in the kind of day they’ll have and how available they’ll be for learning. Your morning is much more likely to be positive if you check homework and pack the backpack, select clothes and pack lunches the night before. While long and emotional good-byes in the morning can make separation tougher for young children, a hug and a reminder about where/when/how they will be picked up after schools is helpful. Try to say goodbye with one of these sorts of messages: “I love you. I’m proud of you. Do your best. Be kind to others. I can’t wait to hear what you learned/did today! HERE’S TO A SMOOTH TRANSITION BACK TO SCHOOL!
