Edison Language Academy – Together Through Two Languages (310) 828-0335 www.edison.smmusd.org
ANNOUNCEMENTS Are You Returning to Edison in 2017-18? Last Call!! We are starting the process of configuring next year’s classes and we need to know if we should assign your child to a class next year. Please turn in this form to the office ASAP. CAASPP Testing – Our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students are participating in the state testing program May 8-15. All the children take the exams in English and th Math and 5 grade also is piloting the new state Science Test. Testing occurs in the morning so please do your best to get plenty of sleep, have a good breakfast, avoid absences, and get to school on time. While we do have make up days, it’s easiest for students to test with all their grade level peers.
PTA Association Meeting – May 17 at 8:30 am, PTA will vote on the slate of individuals nominated to serve on the PTA Board in 2017-2018. Please come to this important meeting. Also on the agenda is a presentation from SMMUSD’s Director of Food Services Elizabeth Powell about SMMUSD’s food and nutrition programs. PTA Fundraiser with Yogurtland – As a pilot program on Wednesday May 10, 17, 24 and 31, PTA will be partnering with the Yogurtland on Lincoln and Pico to sell frozen yogurt afterschool. The cups of frozen yogurt will sell for $2.00 with $1.00 of each sale supporting the PTA Family Support Network. Sales will be only from 2:30 to 3:00 pm—40-55 minutes after the end of the school day. Toys at School -- Recently the little “fidget spinners” have been making their rounds at school. Although these are sometimes marketed as being helpful for students with ADHD and Anxiety, they have become very disruptive distractions – and even safety hazards -in classrooms. If your child has an IEP or 504 plan that allows for a fidget object, we’ll work with you to identify an appropriate object. For everyone else, these are simply toys – and toys from home are not appropriate at school. Thanks for your help! Preparing Dinner for Open Houses – We offer dinner for sale before our Spring Open Houses – both as a fundraiser for PTA and because breaking bread together th builds fellowship among our community. On May 18, 4 Grade Parents are in charge of preparing and selling food st and on May 25, 1 grade parents are responsible. Room Reps will be posting sign up sheets and organizing a coordinating committee. Many hands make light work!
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK: 2016 HONOR ROLL SCHOOL WITH STEM DESIGNATION Edison is proud to once again be designated as an Honor Roll School by the Campaign for Business and Education Excellence and the Educational Results Partnership. Schools receiving this distinction from leaders in the California academic and business communities have demonstrated consistent high levels of student academic achievement, improvement in achievement levels over time and reduction in achievement gaps among student populations. Edison is also part of a small a subset of the Honor Roll receiving a special designation for STEM as a school that has both high percentages of low-income students and high levels of math and science achievement. To learn more about this award and to see some very interesting comparisions between Edison and schools with similar demographics, visit http://edresults.org/HonorRoll/HonorRoll?State=CA
A Note of Caution: Upper Grade Students and Google Accounts-- 3rd, 4th and 5th graders have google accounts that they use for academic purposes -- to turn in assignments, work on group projects, access curriculum sites, or conduct research. Most work is done on school devices in the classroom or lab, but students can also access their accounts on devices at home and they can use them to communicate with each other. Some students recently have been using their accounts to do the equivalent of passing notes and/or pictures around during class time and neglecting the work they should be doing. Some have organized themselves into “clubs” and send messages/pictures to fellow students at home. Please talk with your child about how he/she is using his/her smmk12 account and periodically monitor their browser history to see what sites they are accessing, and scan rd th th their messages if they are using devices at home. 3 , 4 and 5 graders aren’t really ready for unsupervised use of email and the internet and they still need oversight at school and at home. Thank you for keeping an eye on internet and email use at home.
