ANNOUNCEMENTS
EDISON PARENT SURVEY – Although the raffle is over, we still want to hear the voices of all parents. We have 160 responses so far and would love to hear from the rest of you before the end of the school year. If you’ve misplaced your copy of the survey, it went home in the May 4 packet and e-packet and we have print copies in the front office. As we plan for next year, your input helps us in so many ways! Thanks for your time. OPEN HOUSE – Our upper grade Open House (Grades 3-4-5) is Thursday May 26. Dinner will be available beginning at 5:00 prepared by our first grade families (Thank you!). Classroom visits for Grades 3 and 5 are from 6:00 - 6:45 pm. 4th grade has a different schedule for each classroom because students are also presenting their year-end play Cenicientaraña in the cafeteria: Room 200 (Ms. Maiztegui) – 5:00-6:00 pm- Play; 6:157:00 pm Class Visit Room 201 (Ms. Brumer) – 6:15-7:00 pm -Play; 7:00-7:45 pm Class Visit Room 202 (Mr. Nepomuceno) –Class Visit 6:00-6:45 pm Play 7:00- 7:45 pm YEAR END GIFTS TO EDISON PTA AND TO SMMEF –This has been a tough year for fundraising in individual schools and for SMMUSD’s Education Foundation. So we’re reaching the end of the year without having met our all our funding goals. This means that while we’re still raising funds, we’re also having difficult conversations about what to cut next year. For SMMEF, that might be instructional assistants, PS Arts, or the stretch grant that Edison uses to support technology, Spanish music and supervision staff. For PTA, cuts could be in supplies for teachers, drop off valets, field trips, assemblies, or Kid Biz. So, if you have not yet donated to SMMEF and to the Edison PTA (or if you can give a little more) now is the time! The Franklin Elementary School PTA will match contributions up to $200,000 for SMMEF, so you can double the impact of your contribution. You can donate on-line at www.smmef.org, or leave a contribution in the Edison Office. Contributions to the Edison PTA can be made on line at www.edisonamigos.com (click the fundraising tab and Direct Donation) or by writing a check to Edison PTA and leaving it in the office. Cash donations can also be left at Cafecito or in the main office. Thanks for contributing what you can – every dollar counts!
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK: HONOR ROLL AND STEM AWARD FOR EDISON We’re proud to announce that the Educational Results Partnership (ERP) and the Campaign for Business and Education Excellence (CBEE) have awarded Edison another Honor Roll designation and a special STEM designation for achievement in math and science. Said CBEE, “after an extensive analysis of student data for every public school in California, Edison Elementary was a clear leader in getting students to grade level and beyond.” Edison was also designated as one of only 117 schools for the 2015 California Honor Roll with special STEM designation for achievement in math and science. We’re proud of the hard and talented work of our teachers and our students’ accomplishments. CBEE awards high performing high poverty California schools with Honor Roll status for both their academic achievement and ability to close achievement gaps. A little over half of Edison students come from families with incomes below the poverty line. Since 2006, Edison has won various state awards for these twin equity and excellence accomplishments. CBEE identifies a common set of success factors in higher performing Honor Roll schools and districts, including: “clear specific learning objectives aligned to college and career readiness, along with evidence-based instructional practices; establishing system-wide mission of college and career readiness for all students; investing in human capital; maintaining data and assessment systems to monitor school and student performance; and deploying resources and guidance to support school’s efforts to prepare all students for college and career.” These are goals we work on each year. Edison has not had a special add-on “STEM” program. What we do is focus on providing systematic and strong math and science instruction integrated into our immersion curriculum. Through coaching and professional development (PD) we’ve worked to build strong problem solving instruction based on new math standards and teachers are currently receiving PD on the new Next Generation Science Standards. And we invest in ST (Spacial Temporal) Math for all students to give them lots of opportunities to see what math looks like. The fact that math and science instruction is almost entirely in SPANISH while the children test in English makes this award all the more notable. With funding from our Site Plan we are now working on the next steps to grow our STEM curriculum in ways that are natural extensions of our curriculum and that build the capacity of our staff. Stay tuned! June 4 – 1:00-3:00 PM Immersion Seniors Graduation – Edison
