FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK The next few days are full of musical concerts at Edison. Between May 17 and May 28 there will be 17 different concerts on our campus! Every grade level is performing. Please join us and celebrate the musical accomplishments of our students. SMMUSD has an excellent music program for students in Grades 3-5, but Edison chooses to supplement these programs so that ALL children at Edison have music nd instruction. Pre-K through 2 grade children have music education in Spanish to add the additional benefits of Spanish language and vocabulary development and to give children an additional window into the cultures of the Americas. Studies also show that students of music can be more emotionally developed, with empathy towards other cultures -- so this also addresses the Dual Language goal of developing SocioCultural Competence. But why else do SMMUSD and Edison invest in music education for all? The National Association for Music Education explains the value of music education in schools in the following way: Musical training develops the areas of the brain related to language and reasoning. It develops the skill of memorization that can serve students well in education and beyond. Learning music promotes craftsmanship, and students learn to want to create good work instead of mediocre work. Students who practice with musical instruments improve their hand-eye coordination. Musicians can better detect meaningful, informationbearing elements in sounds, like the emotional meaning. Music can be relaxing and students can fight stress by learning to play music. Many musical education programs require teamwork – being part of a band or orchestra, or learning how to harmonize. And as an added benefit, students who study music tend to have higher SAT scores. So, for all these reasons and because the kids are such engaging (and photogenic!) performers, please join us as Edison makes music next week.
