FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK:

GETTING READY FOR NEXT YEAR It’s hard to believe that we’re already getting ready for the 20192020 school year! But, there are several critical things underway for next year that I’d like to call to your attention. Does your child plan to return to Edison next year? In this week’s Wednesday packet, is a letter asking if your child in TK – 4th grade intends to return to Edison next year and a form to respond by Friday, May 3. We need to know how many openings we’ll have for the next school year in order to save spots for returning students and make admission decisions students who have applied for Grades 1-5 next year. Is there any information we should be aware of as we begin to build classes for next year? If there is any information you think your child’s teacher may not be aware of that would affect a classroom assignment decision, please include it on the May 3 form. These forms are to returned to the MAIN OFFICE to the principal’s attention. I will carefully review any confidential information that you share and consider it in making final placements. How are classroom assignments for next year determined? Classroom placement recommendations are made based on the input of your child’s current classroom teacher, in consultation with any specialists who may have also worked with your child this year. These individuals know your child’s academic strengths and weaknesses and have observed how social/emotional dynamics played out at school this year. The Site Principal is ultimately responsible for reviewing and finalizing placement recommendations. Creating good academic and social/emotional balance in classes is a thoughtful process – often even more so in dual language programs since we also must assure a good language mix within classrooms. These assignments are not finalized until August as there are sometimes changes in student enrollment and/or staffing that occur over the summer. New class lists are posted just before school begins. Verification of Continuing Enrollment -- If your family resides outside SMMUSD and your child attends Edison on an interdistrict attendance permit, you must submit a Verification of Continued Enrollment Form for your child to return in the fall. Letters explaining this process and deadlines were mailed to all families who were in this category in January 2019. If you have not yet completed this form – or if you have moved outside the district since January 2019 -- please visit http://www.smmusd.org/StudentServices/permits.html for a copy of this letter and form. If you have questions about this process, Senior Office Specialist Kathy Fargnoli can assist you. Please also work to maintain regular and on-time attendance, as inter-district permits can be cancelled for attendance problems. For a review of attendance policies, please see http://www.smmusd.org/StudentServices/attendance.html
