FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK:

ANNOUNCEMENTS VALENTINES DANCE AND DINNER – Please join us this Friday (2/8) evening from 5:30-8:30 pm for this fun cultural evening of music, dancing, games, and fabulous food. In appreciation for everyone who has donated to the Education Foundation, donors will be awarded 5 free tickets to use at event! We are still looking for volunteers for set up, clean up, working in the Loteria and games area, and the first aid station. Email edison.pta.special.events@gmail.com

or sign up on the board near Cafecito if you can lend a hand! Also, if your homemade salsa gets raves at parties, bring in a batch and enter it in the salsa competition Friday night for prizes and bragging rights! Raffle tickets are still available; money and ticket stubs are due 2/7. CRAZY HAIR AND HAT DAY -- Thanks for helping support this fun day last week that celebrated the great job our students are doing using positive and pro-social behaviors at school! How long will it take us to collect the Golden Tickets we need for our next schoolwide celebration? HELP SCHOOLS IN PUERTO RICO RESTOCK THEIR LIBRARIES – Schools and libraries were hard hit by Hurricane María. Edison is collecting new books in Spanish as part of our action projects to promote Kindness and Justice. If you can donate a new book in Spanish for a school library (or a very gently used book in Spanish for a classroom library), bring them to our Edison library by February 22. Our friends at Access Books will be delivering them to schools in Puerto Rico! VALENTINES DAY AT SCHOOL – We celebrate this day as Día de Amistad/Friendship Day. On an elementary school campus, it’s not about love and romance or chocolate and flowers. It’s about offering friendship to all. If your child does want to bring Valentines cards, please make sure to bring one for every child in the class. And as a reminder, California does not allow candy or chocolates during the school day, so please do not send them.

OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE ON THE EDISON PTA How much do you know about the Edison PTA? The Edison PTA (Parent Teacher Association) is a volunteer, non-profit organization composed of parents and school staff who join together to support our Edison community, promote parent engagement and involvement, and bring enrichment resources to our school. The Edison PTA is a great illustration of two of my favorite proverbs -- “It takes a village to raise a child” and “Many hands make light work.” What does the PTA do? Too many things to fully list here! But let’s start by noting Fall Festival/Día de los Muertos, Baile de San Valentin, the Jogathon family and movie nights, Bike It Walk It Day, and Edison Amigos/EBlast. It also raises resources for assemblies, field trips, supplemental materials for our teachers and staff, scholarships for the 5th Grade Science Education Camp, technology supplies and replacements, School Smarts, and our on-line KidBiz reading program. It organizes our school support for the Santa Monica Education Foundation, which provides our school with so many other resources (such as classroom assistants, extra health office staff, campus supervisors, our arts programs (theater, visual arts, music in Spanish, and dance) and a cash grant that our Site Council allocates to support our school improvement goals. Under PTA leadership (thanks Liz Garcia and all of you!) Edison families led the way in district fundraising again this year with 88% of our families donating to the Ed Foundation! Our PTA is directed by an Executive Board elected by Edison parents which meets monthly on Wednesday evenings. Officers are elected for staggered terms so that there is always some continuity in leadership and support for new officers. This is the time of the year when the PTA Nominating Committee is seeking next year’s PTA Leaders. You may be contacted by a member of the Nominations Committee – or you can nominate yourself! Please consider serving in some way this year – in an elected position or on a committee. Training and good support are available. Please consider donating a little time and joining us in this important work that helps make Edison a great learning community! Wednesday, February 13 – 8:30 am ELAC Meeting - Library
