Corazon de Vida Students Visit in January – Edison has a long tradition of supporting the children at the various Corazon de Vida orphanages in Baja California. Each year we have a community service project around the time of Noche de César Chávez (this year on March 23) where we collect items to be delivered to the children. We’ve also established the tradition of hosting some of the graduates of the Corazon de Vida orphanages when they visit California. These young college students come and talk with our 4th and 5th graders about what life is like in an orphanage and the ways that they have had to persevere without family support to get to college. These conversations take place entirely in Spanish and are real “eye openers” for our students – who have a hard time understanding that the children at Corazon de Vida share everything in common (with the exception of their tooth brushes!). This year, the Corazon de Vida students will be visiting us on January 9 in the morning, before they travel on to visit immersion students at JAMS.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Kindness and Justice Challenge – In January we kick off a month of intentionally completing acts of Kindness and Justice in honor of the work and life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We turn admiration into action when we answer the call of Dr. King’s children not just to take a day of work or school to honor their father, but to “Do Something!” to keep his legacy alive. Watch for more details and join the challenge!

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK:

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Dear Edison Families, We finished our last holiday concert today – a total of 16 different performances! It’s wonderful to see the children’s musical growth in just a few months. When we come back from the winter break, the primary grades will begin their theater performances as they conclude their semester of theater arts and transition to visual arts in spring semester. Third, fourth and fifth grade plays and performances are a bit later in the year. And, of course, the academic work goes on full steam ahead! In January, we also update student progress by assessing reading, writing and math and preparing for mid-year Progress Reports that go home early in February. As we get ready for the winter holidays, we want to pause and thank you for sharing your children with us. It is a privilege and delight to work with them and be part of their journey toward bilingualism. Our whole school team – classroom teachers, music and theater specialists, coaches, intervention teachers, instructional assistants, physical education, support, health office, cafeteria, technology, custodial, supervision, and administrative staff – join me in wishing your family a wonderful holiday season and a great start to the new year.
