FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK: EARTHQUAKE SAFETY

ANNOUNCEMENTS RECRUITMENT FOR NEXT YEAR’S PRESCHOOLERS, TK AND KINDER STUDENTS – We are already recruiting for next year’s students, so let us know right away if you have younger children you’re seeking to enroll in 2019-2020. To claim a sibling enrollment priority for TK or Kinder, you must submit an application by November 2, 2018. Any currently enrolled Preschoolers or TK students who want to claim a continuing student preference for TK or K must also apply by November 15. Ask Yoly for an application. All Seaside Preschool Applications are due on November 15. Tours are already underway, so if you need to schedule a tour or want to pass the word to neighbors and family members interested in applying, please ask them to call the office to schedule a tour ASAP. SITE COUNCIL ELECTIONS ARE COMING – This fall there will be an election to fill two parent vacancies on the Edison Site Council. Both Betty Baboujon and Carolina Vila are ending two-year terms and are stepping off the Council. School Site Council is an elected body composed of equal numbers of school staff and parents. Site Council develops our Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) developing annual goals and strategies and allocating resources to achieve those goals. It also reviews and approves our annual site safety plan. In the Wednesday packet on October 10, you will find a form asking for nominations; you may nominate yourself. Meetings are usually held from 4:00-6:00 pm one Wednesday per month. It’s ideal to have a Site Council that reflects the enrollment of the school. When the form comes home, please consider running. If you would like to nominate yourself or someone else, please return to the Edison office by October 29.

One of the things schools do to keep students safe at school is to have detailed safety plans that reflect different kinds of emergencies. You are probably aware that we have monthly fire drills, bi-monthly earthquake drills, and quarterly shelter-in-place/lock-down drills. What you may not realize is that schools also have plans for what would happen if a major earthquake occurred during school hours, when students might need to be cared for on-campus for several days until they could all be reunited with families. To be ready for this possibility, Edison has emergency supplies, food, and water stored on campus. We also create and train specialized teams to deal with different aspects of the emergency, including search and rescue, first aide, emergency shelter and supplies, assembly area, security, communications, and reunion teams. On October 18, at 10:18 am Edison will be participating in the statewide Great California Shakeout Drill. Our whole district follows the same procedures and they reflect FEMA protocols. At the beginning of the drill, we duck (under tables), hold (on the table legs) and cover (our heads and necks to protect from falling objects). In a real earthquake emergency, we would not leave the buildings until the initial shaking stops and staff could determine a safe evacuation route. During our drill, students will be dismissed to their designated spots on the yard. The team of teachers and staff supervising students will move them to shady areas on the yard and keep them safe and comfortable while other staff report to their emergency teams. Although we will move them out of the direct sun, it will be a particularly good day to apply sunscreen and send your child with a hat. They need to be part of the drill so that they know what to do, how to listen and follow directions in this sort of setting, and how to stay calm. While we are outside, our staff teams will be going through simulations of various emergency situations so that we have annual hands-on practice in handling these situations. What can parents do to prepare for children’s safety should a large earthquake during the school day? Every Californian should have emergency food, water, and supplies at home, but your family should also have a plan for picking up your child from school. This is a good time to look at who is on your emergency card, make sure you have several persons authorized to pick up your child, and -- if you live or work at a distance from Edison – that you have a local person on your child’s emergency card. Also, if your child has food allergies, provide the school with some non-perishable food-bars that your child can safely eat in an emergency.
