ANNOUNCEMENTS Parent Briefing on Edison’s Achievement Data -- Wednesday evening at 6:00 p.m., Principal Orum will be sharing information about Edison’s achievement data, the strengths and challenges it reveals, and how the data are being used to shape this year’s Site Plan. Hope to see you there! Applications for Next Year -- Please return the orange sibling form asking if you have a younger child that you hope to enroll in Edison for TK or K next year. You must obtain an application from Yoly (ext 61-305 or ygutierrez@smmusd.org ) and submit it by December 15, 2019 in order to claim a sibling preference. Enrollment is not automatic and if you apply after 12/15, you lose the sibling priority. PreK, TK, K Orientations – Parents of ALL applicants for Seaside Preschool must attend one of the two scheduled orientations – November 8 at 9:30 am or December 19 at 6:00 pm. Call the office to make an appointment. If you are applying for TK or K and have a child currently at Edison, you do not need to attend an orientation but you must apply by December 15. If your older child is in middle or high school, you must attend an orientation AND submit the application by December 15. Last Parent Volunteer Training for 20192020 – is scheduled for Wednesday, October 30 at 8:30 am in the Library. Nominations for Site Council Parent Members – We have three spots for parent members of Site Council open this year. Nomination forms will be coming out next week, with elections the following week. Site Council members review school data and surveys, develop and monitor our School Plan, Title I and Stretch Grant budgets, and develop our Site Safety Plan. Please consider serving our school in this way. Halloween Parade – On Halloween morning, Edison hosts a Costume Parade from 8:45-9:45 am on the field. Parents are welcome to come (in costume if you wish!); sign in at the office and wear a visitor’s sticker. Students may come in costume (but leave any “costume weapons” at home). Send a change of clothes for the rest of the school day. If you would prefer that your child not participate, there will be an alternate activity in the library.
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK: PREPARING FOR PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES Parent Teacher Conferences are coming November 5th-8th. If you haven’t already done so, please make sure to sign up with your child’s teacher for an appointment to discuss your child’s progress so far this year, including: academics, social interactions, work habits and effort. A conference is a focused conversation between parents and teacher, with each providing information that you can use together to make sure your child has a successful and positive school year. You can expect that teachers will share information with you about how your child is doing in class and what the fall assessments indicate about strengths and challenges. Teachers can tell you the standards that your child meets with ease and areas in which they are struggling or need a boost. Teachers may also have questions for you about how to better connect with and motivate your child. As parents, you have valuable information to share about your child, especially their response to school, areas where they seem to be excited about school, and where they struggle. Before the conference, spend a few moments thinking about how homework is going, if there are any concerns about peer relationships, or anything about assignments and expectations that needs more clarity. Ask your child if there is anything that they would like you to share with their teacher. Also, spend a few minutes before the conference thinking about what you know about the content your child is expected to learn this year. This website from the California State PTA can provide some quick information about standards in case you’re not clear: https://capta.org/focus-areas/education/common-core/ . Teachers can also answer questions about standards. We want all parents to be clear about what it is that children are supposed to learn each year so that we can all pull in the same direction! At the conference, if your child does need some extra support to meet standards, you may also work with the teacher on an Academic Support Plan. These plans may include adjustments to instruction, supplemental interventions, things that parents can do at home, etc. They are a useful tool for parent-teacher check-ins over the course of the year to make sure children have what they need to meet or exceed standards this year. Remember that Tuesday, November 5 is a pupil free day for conferences and that November 6,7,8 are minimum days to allow for afternoon conferences with parents. If you share custody and you and your child’s other parent would prefer to have separate conferences, please let the teacher know. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone for parent teacher conferences! October 28 - 8:30 am Dr. Drati at Special PTA meeting – Safety and Visitor ID
