Gap Year Prospectus

So, you're in in a Gap Yea We are delighted you are considering a gap year with us!

Our 10 month programme aims to equip you for a lifetime of mission in whatever contexts God has for you beyond this time. In this brochure you'll find an outline of what a Gap Year with Edinburgh City Mission could look like for you.

Maisie was the first participant on our Gap Year programme, joining in September 2020. As such, she is the best-placed person to speak about the programme.

What sort of city do we want to see?

We want to see people flourishing, communities thriving, the church mobilised and God glorified.

Following Jesus' example, we support people who are experiencing deprivation, exclusion or isolation.

We are a group of Christians from different churches helping to create a mission movement across Edinburgh by stimulating and strengthening the church's mission.

eering, Love, Generosity, Unity and Justice Vision - We are helping to create a mission movement across Edinburgh through prayer and by stimulating and strengthening the church's mission. Following Jesus' example, we support people who are experiencing deprivation, exclusion or isolation.

Mission Statement – We are all about stimulating and strengthening the church’s mission in Edinburgh.

Culture – Our culture is shaped by our values. We emphasise pioneering, love, generosity, unity, and justice.

These 5 values are based on the character of Jesus and how we see his attitude towards others in the Bible. He was a pioneer. He pioneered our salvation! Jesus constantly modelled self-sacrificial love for others, showing the generosity of the Father.

The relationship between Jesus, the Father & the Holy Spirit is a perfect model of both unity and diveristy. Jesus displayed God's justice by how he lived in lifting up the lowly and bringing freedom from all kinds of oppression.

Spirituality – we are open to and seek the leading of the Holy Spirit in our lives and work. We ask God to help us with everything that we do and to give us faith for more. We are from a variety of different churches; we are not associated with one denomination. We seek to build unity through diversity across the church, in and around Edinburgh.

Foodbank+ network We partner with eight churches who each run a Foodbank+ with us:

Clothesbank+ A Clothesbank where those who have been referred can come and choose clothes, in partnership with Central Church, Tollcross.

Soul Food We partner with Soul Food Edinburgh to set a table for our neighbours in Newington, inviting them to join us for a hot meal at City of Edinburgh Methodist Church.

The Care Van Since 1990 we have had a partnership with Bethany Christian Trust to run the Care Van: a mobile unit for food and drink for the homeless in Edinburgh.

We are responsible for the evening Care Van rota which is run by volunteers from 40 churches from all across Edinburgh and the Lothians.

Salaam

An Open Hand

Salaam (Arabic for ‘Peace’ and also ‘Hello!’) is our project supporting refugees and asylum seekers from Syria and other parts of the world and to support the churches who are involved in welcoming them.

An Open Hand is a new ministry which aims to provide parents in severe hardship with a present for their child's birthday, along with books and items for the family to play with together, such as simple games and stationery. It is a partnership between Greenbank Church and Edinburgh City Mission.

In 2021-22, Salaam and its various projects grew rapidly.

We operate: The Salaam Weekend Club, Befriending, English Conversation Classes, Peaced Together and more!

Nations Nations is a ministry created to stimulate and strengthen the diaspora and non-white majority church’s mission in Edinburgh.

We want to promote integration between these churches and fellowship groups with the wider church

Two's Company Two’s Company is a new befriending scheme that will be launching in partnership with Linking Lives UK. We want to empower local churches to bring comfort and community to older people experiencing isolation and loneliness.

Year pectus What can you expect from a year with Edinburgh City Mission?

What will the Gap Year look like?

A Gap Year with Edinburgh City Mission will be one in which we hope you will develop in your Christian faith, as well as learn some of the practicalities of mission.

It will prepare you to be part of the mission field wherever you end up, whether that be in a big city like Edinburgh, or in a smaller community.

It will give you a vision for enabling a mission movement wherever you go, whether you are a full-time mission worker, or you want to live a life of mission as we believe Jesus has called us to.

The year itself will look different for each Gap Year student.

With many different ministries to be involved in, the year will be tailored to your interests and skill set.

Along with the work of Edinburgh City Mission you will be given the option to either dig deeper into your faith through the Training Hub at Baptist Union Scotland, or through a selection of theological modules at the Faith Mission Bible College.

You will be provided with a supervisor who will supervise you in your working role, as well as weekly mentor meetings to talk about your faith and what you are learning through the programme, as well as any areas of concern.

You will be working three days a week with Edinburgh City Mission and therefore have two days to find part-time work within the City.

What Biblical Training will there be?

As we are a non-denominational organization we are offering two different options for study during your Gap Year with us.

These options can be discussed in more detail during the interview process:

The Training Hub – Baptist Union Scotland The Training Hub is a 10-month discipleship programme encompassing theological teaching, leadership development, practical training & spiritual growth. It’s a place for training and equipping everyday disciples to serve God in every area of life and culture.

Applied Theology – Faith Mission Bible College Once your application has been successful you will be able to choose from a range of different modules on applied theology. The study for these modules will take one day a week at the Faith Mission Bible College in Edinburgh.

Study time Each term, a book will be set by your mentor that is relevant to the work you will be doing. You will be expected to read the book and produce a piece of work each term.

You will be able to use your timetabled study time to do this.

As explained previously one of the benefits of taking part in a smaller Gap Year programme is that we can be extremely flexible with meeting your needs and interests.

Therefore, the timetable below is just an example of what a week in the life of an Edinburgh City Mission Gap Year student could look like!

During the year you will be given three weeks over Christmas and then three weeks to be taken flexibly throughout the year.

Where to Stay?

Once we have accepted you onto the Gap Year Programme we will then begin discussions to find accommodation that suits your needs.

If you are planning to live at home during your Gap Year or want to source your own accommodation, we would suggest that you either have your own means of transport or that public transport puts you within no more than 40 minutes’ travel time to the places you will be serving.

Again, all of these decisions can be made in conversation with us at Edinburgh City Mission.

If you do not have your own accommodation, then we can help you by trying to place you with a host family.

This will be in discussion with yourself and the host family and we will aim to find you accommodation which has good transport links or is close to where you will be serving.

The Gap Year we are offering also enables you to take up part-time work as you will be with Edinburgh City Mission 3 days a week, giving you time to work on the other days of the week.

We can work your Edinburgh City Mission days around the part-time work you find.

Edinburgh City Mission covers 50% of costs of the Gap Year programme. The figures above are the remaining 50% to be paid by the appointed applicant.

If you would like to discuss a full bursary, please do contact us about this as we have one bursary available for 2022.

Once we have received and processed this, if we feel it is appropriate we will invite you to an interview day. This will be a chance for us to get to know you better with a formal interview, but then also with some informal team building, a lunch and a task that you will be given to complete on the day.

The primary interviews (with other opportunities) will take place on Saturday 2nd April.

After the interview day we will be in contact shortly to let you know whether you have been successful.

Once you have been selected to start on our Gap Year Programme we will begin to discuss with you your accommodation needs, and work on the specifics of what your individual Gap Year will look like.
