We launched our original Courier fast city bike in 1999. The Courier has since evolved into a 6-model range. This one is closest to the original Courier (Cycling Plus Budget Bike of the Year a few years ago) so it thoroughly deserves its Classic handle. As with all the best designs, simplicity is key to the Courier Classic’s popularity. The frame and wheels are as strong as a mountain bike’s because they are genuine MTB components. The 26x1.6” tyres are semi slick and lightweight so they accelerate almost as fast as a road bike’s. The gearing is stripped to the bone with a single shifter, mech and chainring because that’s all you might need for everyday use. Check the Courier Classic and you will have to agree that there’s a lot to be said for making it minimal.

Here, the Courier is treated to the 21st Century’s most welcome refinement in cycle technology - effective disc brakes that don’t double the price of an everyday bike as they might have in the 1990s. The great thing about a disc brake is that the pads are squeezed onto a hub-mounted steel rotor, so it’s far less susceptible to the elements than a tyre rim. The pads and rotors are much harder, so they will last significantly longer than rubber pads on alloy rims.
This bike enjoys the same upgrades as the standard Courier Race: larger 700c wheels roll quicker and Alivio shifters fire more rapidly. Then it’s further improved with Tektro iO disc brakes to help you stop faster. Once again we have opted for mechanical (AKA cableoperated) disc brakes which are less likely to get you into a fankle, maintenance-wise than hydraulic brakes.
Bigger wheels deliver bigger performance. The Courier Race is even faster than our Courier Classic, thanks to its 700c wheels. That’s because, everything else being equal, larger diameter wheels roll faster. Especially when they are shod with 700 x 32 tyres, which are 9mm narrower than 26 x 1.6” treads. That’s a difference you’ll notice every time you accelerate. Talking of speed, the 8-speed lever is upgraded to Shimano Rapidfire level for gear shifting that’s even faster, even more precise.
