WHAT’S HOT THIS SUMMER?

Having been such a consistent innovator, it’s little wonder Specialized has been the Bike Co-op’s best selling brand for the past 3 decades. What makes Specialized truly exceptional is their ability to continually develop their race-proven technologies, whilst always striving to make their innovations available at more accessible prices. Take the Roubaix. When Specialized launched a performance road bike that didn’t compromise comfort in 2004, some viewed it as a niche curiosity. Nine years (and four Paris-Roubaix victories) later, the Roubaix remains the go-to endurance road bike range, thanks to Specialized’s continual evolution of the concept, illustrated by the creation of the first disc brake-equipped Roubaix (pictured below). If a Roubaix sounds like it might be the bike for you, but you’re not on a £3K budget, turn to page 36 and you’ll find a bike with the same Paris-Roubaix-winning pedigree down to an unprecedented £1,200. If that’s still too much, page 35 reveals the Roubaix-inspired, £650 Specialized Secteur. You’ll find this theme carried through Specialized’s range of helmets and shoes too (pp. 62-65). For cycling innovation at the best prices, Specialized is always a very hot option.

gopro hero3 blAck edition £359.99 Web Ref: 15747 Whatever adventures you get up to this summer (and way beyond) you will be able to record it with cinema-quality fidelity, on the move, with a GoPro Hero3 Black Edition camera. You have probably already seen GoPro-shot movies. When Felix Baumgartner filmed his recordbreaking 39km (24 mile) supersonic freefall from the edge of outer space, he did so with five GoPro Hero2 cameras strapped to his pressure suit. The Hero3 is even more powerful, yet it’s 25% thinner and lighter than the GoPro Hero2, Felix helped make famous. The Hero3 lets you capture the action up to 240 frames per second. It gives you the capability to take 30 stills a second. It takes a micro SD card.‘It packs more power than most professional cameras on the market.’ The New York Times.

‘IMPOSSIBLY SMALL, IMPOSSIBLY PRECISE, IMPOSSIBLY COOL.’

SPECIALIZED ROUBAIX EXPERT SL4 DISC £2,999.99 Shimano’s development of a lighter weight (151g per calliper) mechanical disc brake inspired Specialized to create their first disc-equipped Roubaix. Its Shimano CX75 stoppers are Velo News-rated as the equal of the world leaders in cable-operated discs - Avid BB7s. Multiple victories in the world’s hardest one-day road race, Paris-Roubaix, inspired Specialized to coin their slogan, smoother = faster. Add discs to the mix: this Roubaix lets you go faster, comfortable in the knowledge that its brakes are even more dependable and its rims will never wear thin.

WIRED.

POWER UNDER CONTROL Power Under Control is Merckx’s mantra. ‘While everyone continues to talk about frame weight, we at Eddy Merckx Cycles prefer to concentrate on having the ‘power under control’. You see, for us, it’s far more important that a frame be stiff and rigid, as well of course as being light, because it means your bike will react instantaneously, and without loss of power.’ Merckx Cycles.

WE ASKED EDDY MERCKX ABOUT HIS BIKES. THIS IS WHAT HE HAD TO SAY. IF YOU COULD SUM UP YOUR OWN BRAND OF BIKES IN ONE WORD WHAT WOULD IT BE? Power. IF YOU WERE 25 YEARS OLD AND RACING TODAY AND COULD CHOOSE ANY BIKE, WHY WOULD YOU CHOOSE A MERCKX? Merckx bikes are fast, stable and safe. And they look nice too.

Bike Co-op Sales and Development Director, Alan Nestor, has ridden more étapes and gran fondos than the rest of us over the past few years. When we were considering adding Eddy Merckx bikes to our range this season, Alan was the natural candidate to enjoy first dibs on the sample EMX-3 Athena (pictured below) Eddy Merckx Cycles sent over from Belgium. When it comes to bike testing, Alan is a hard taskmaster. Give him one carbon bike and he’ll say it’s too unforgiving. Give him a more comfortoriented road bike, he’ll comment that it doesn’t quite deliver the ‘oomph’ he’s looking for. Give Alan a Merckx EMX-3 Athena: his enthusiasm was unqualified. After an extended 2-week trial, he confirmed that its pure race geometry delivered the explosive power transfer he was looking for, yet the ride was smooth over roads that were decidedly unsmooth. Our buyers got the nod. You too can now try out a Merckx cycle at Eddy Bikes (as some folk fondly refer to the Bike Co-op).

WHAT SETS MERCKX BIKES APART FROM THE COMPETITION? Very safe bikes with the best power output.

MErckx emx-3 athena £2,799.99 ‘BALANCES COMFORT WITH EXCEPTIONAL STIFFNESS’ CYCLING PLUS

‘Eddy Merckx set up his company in 1980 to put his career to good use by making frames capable of withstanding the brutal conditions in which he thrived. The EMX-3 is, like Eddy himself, hard as nails. With a longer relaxed head tube, it’s nominally a sportive bike, but the way it balances comfort with exceptional

04

stiffness means it’s equally capable as a full on racer....Here’s a bike designed to be ridden hard and thrown into corners by burly rouleurs...given a bit of welly it floats over rolling terrain with ease....It’s lifetime warranty is a bonus, too.’ Cycling Plus magazine. Sizes: 42, 45, 48, 51, 54cm. (Compact sizing equivalent to 51, 53, 56, 58 and 60cm classic road bikes). Colour: Black/Carbon/Red. Weight: 8kg. Web Ref: 15791

A perfect marriage of old-school Eddy-inspired racing geometry with up-to-the-minute full carbon frame and fork fabrication (with inch and an eighth to inch and a quarter tapered steerer) the EMX-1 retains that essential balance of optimal strength-to-weight ratio balanced with point-and-shoot stiffness that characterises Merckx bikes. Equip it with Shimano 105 Dual Control 2x10 STI shifters and you know this bike will perform to its full potential in the local peloton.

eastway r 3.0 alloy £998.99 THE APEX OF SUB-£1,000 ROAD BIKES?

Looking for an aluminium-framed road bike with a difference? This cleanwelded, mudguard-compatible, butted 7000 alloy frame’s skinny top tube shows Eastway’s intent. Its comfort geometry combined with its carbon fork glides over broken tarmac. Its full SRAM Apex 2x10 transmission (including chainset) quickly convinces you that Double Tap levers might be a simpler and more elegant route to dual control shifting. Eastway’s own E24 wheels with their deep section rims and 6-pawl sealed cartridge bearing hubs are as hard wearing as they are smooth rolling. Enjoy the ride.

Eastway bicycles are a brand new venture from Fisher, a company with an impressive track record of bringing all things SRAM and Avid into the UK. With a nod to their local cycling heritage, Fisher named their bicycle brand as a tribute to London’s Eastway Cycle Circuit (Britain’s first purpose built road cycling venue, which made way for the Olympic Velopark.) Eastway’s ambition is to combine urban tech savvy with a sports backbone. They also display a confidence-inspiring level of quality control. Every frame is built to exceed rigorous CEN (European Union) standards by at least 20%. Every Eastway wheel is trued to a tolerance of 0.3mm (The industry standard is true to 1.0mm).

Sizes: XS-XL. Colour: Grey/White. Weight: n/a. Web Ref: 15840

Just as the UK’s Shimano importer, Madison have made a great name for themselves with their Shimano-rich Ridgeback and Genesis bicycle ranges, we are confident that Fisher are onto a winning formula with their distinctively styled SRAM-equipped Eastway bikes.

eastway rd 1.0 carbon disc £1,998.99 OUR BEST BUY IN DISC-BRAKE-EQUIPPED ROAD BIKES

Full carbon frame and fork. SRAM Force Double Tap Controls with carbon brake levers. SRAM Force rear mech with carbon and aluminium cage. SRAM S950 chainset with carbon crank arms. The Eastway RD 1.0 clearly boasts more carbon than its similarly priced rivals. Equipping it with the best cable disc brakes on the market (Avid BB7) makes it exceptional. ‘Eastway’s geometry lends it a reassuring confidence on ropy surfaces, the direct handling makes it entirely happy in traffic. Open it up and it’s got a fun turn of speed. 4/5.’ Cycling Plus: March 2013.

REVOLUTION CLOTHING Now in its tenth year, Revolution is Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op’s own brand of uniquely-styled bikes and cycling equipment: every line expressly designed to offer industry leading value for money. With our Revolution clothing range we have strived to create cycling garments that are as attractive as they are technically sound. Taking a leaf from our Revolution bikes, we want our clothing to look good, but subtly so. Every Revolution garment has to conform to our design brief: ‘Will it improve your riding experience by guaranteeing maximum comfort and performance?’ Moreover, ‘Is it made to the best specification you’ll find at that price?’ It’s only when we can confidently answer ‘yes’ to both these questions that we grace the garment with our Revolution logo.

making quality cycle clothing more affordable

Feeling your best on the bike and looking the part in a matching set of Revolution shorts, jersey and jacket needn’t break the bank. You can create your own ‘cycling suit’ from the 3 fine garments featured below for just £85.

REVOLUTION arrow 6 PANEL ladies’ SHORTS £19.99 Our best buy in authentic cycling shorts for women, the Lycra fabric is 6 panel cut to conform to your shape. The wide waistband and the silicone gripper hem ensure a great fit. The deluxe CoolMax chamois is padded where required and articulated to prevent bunching.

Sizes: 8-16. Colour: Black. Web Ref: 13769

REVOLUTION DART 6 PANEL SHORTS £19.99

REVOLUTION Burn short sleeve jersey £29.99

REVOLUTION reflect jacket £34.99

Dart Shorts’ Lycra fabric never constricts. It stretches and recovers every pedal stroke. Its integral CoolMax synthetic chamois reduces friction and eliminates sit-bone pressure. Silicone hem grippers prevent the lower legs riding up. Wearing cycling shorts of this quality is your best guarantee of comfort in the saddle.

Once you’ve experienced our Revolution Burn Jersey’s peach-skin soft, fast wicking, quick drying fabric, its stretch fit that never gets in a flap, and its 3 rear pockets for keeping essentials such as wallet and energy bar to hand, you’ll be reluctant to revert to riding in an everyday top that lacks these features.

This jacket is lightweight (120g in medium) and compact (rolls into its own 16x12cm stuff sac). This means you can carry a Revolution Reflect Jacket every ride (perhaps in a cycling jersey’s back pocket) so it’s ready to slip on whenever its windproof, water resistant and hi-viz reflective properties are required.

REVOLUTION swift ladies’ short sleeve jersey £29.99 You’ll appreciate this jersey’s cycling cut (high collar and long back) whenever you stretch out on the bike. Its AirBase fabric is fast wicking and feels great against the skin. Reflective piping on either side of the 3-part rear pocket helps ensure you’re seen.

Sizes: 8-16. Colour: Black/ Purple. Web Ref: 13781

REVOLUTION leader waterproof jacket £109.99

GREAT CLOTHING FOR ROAD RIDING

This is our best breathable waterproof, so we call it the Leader. Down from last year’s £124.99 price, it’s also a leader in value. Its Hydrovent Stretch fabric maximises freedom of movement. A high neck, drop tail and XL arms with thumb-holes ensure excellent coverage. Grey reflective stripes and logos deliver 360˚ visibility under street lights, yet they’re subtle enough to spare you the ‘utility services look’. The map-sized rear pocket’s external, see-through LED pod is the perfect place to display your rear light where it will be clearly seen by the following traffic.

REVOLUTION arder anatomic 3/4s £39.99

REVOLUTION NARINA S/S LADIES’ ROAD JERSEY £39.99

REVOLUTION FINNA ANATOMIC 3/4s £39.99

Our most comfortable cycling jersey ever, the AirBase Esk feels even more silky against the skin than the Revolution Burn. Its panelled cut offers a more exact fit. The mesh spinal panel wicks faster. The 2 open rear pockets are augmented with a zipped hip pocket for your phone.

Our deluxe Lycra 3/4s offer more freedom of movement than full-legged longs, yet more coverage than shorts. 3/4s deliver crucial knee protection (chilled knees can become sore knees). The CoolMax chamois is gel padded so it’s even better at absorbing pressure.

The technical equal of the Revolution Esk. Narina’s rear pocket system gives you the option to go bagless. The main pocket (with external phone pocket) can take a tube, mini tool and pump. Then there’s a slim pocket on either side for energy gels and bars.

More coverage than shorts yet cooler than longs, 3/4s are perfect for most days out in the UK. Especially when they’re made, like the Finna, in super-soft Comfortral fabric, flatlock seamed for durability and CoolMax Silver chamoised for hygienic comfort.

REVOLUTION Luran long sleeve mtb jersey £34.99 Loose enough to wear over body armour, the Luran’s casual looks disguise its technical attributes. Its light mesh fabric sucks moisture off the skin, so you’ll stay drier on long MTB climbs. Reflective graphics on the front, back and sleeve help you ride safe on the road home.

REVOLUTION Strath short sleeve jersey £34.99

REVOLUTION tack baggies £49.99

REVOLUTION tack 3/4 baggies £54.99

REVOLUTION tack lite baggies £59.99

Our lightweight socks’ CoolMax yarn is renowned for keeping the skin dry - the key to foot hygiene. Once you get into the cycling sock habit you won’t want to cycle in lesser hosiery. Hence this 3 pack.

The Strath stands out as a loose-cut cycling jersey that’s perfect for mountain biking (or any other riding if you prefer baggy over tight fit). Unlike most MTB tops, the Strath comes with 2 zipped rear pockets: each one big enough to take a wallet or an iPhone.

These loose-fit shorts are mostly made in a robust-but -lightweight fast drying nylon. 4% Lycra fabric stretch seat and rear panels maximise comfort and freedom of movement. Zero padding means Tack Baggies feel ‘normal’ when you wear them off the bike.

If you believe, like a fair few of our customers, that shorts are for primary school kids, consider Revolution Tack 3/4s. They offer the same barecalved freedom of movement and multi-pocket utility as our Tack shorts, with the added bonus of knee coverage and protection.

Tack Lite Baggies are constructed in a ripstop fabric, so they are even lighter weight and faster drying than our regular Revolution Tack Baggies. As with all our Baggies, Tack Lites are unpadded. For optimal comfort wear them over padded Lycra shorts.

REVOLUTION BIKES MAKING QUALITY BICYCLES MORE AFFORDABLE Our revolutionary manifesto is to make quality bicycles more affordable. We achieve this aim by offering the best spec possible at every price point. Looking for a nicely equipped bike with alloy frame, alloy wheels and alloy brakes for under £300? Your search pretty much begins and ends with Revolution. Looking for something more exotic? Even our most expensive Revolution bicycles come in at a Bike to Work (see page 17) compliant sub-£1,000 price.

Revolution Sabre £429.99

Revolution continental £489.99

Revolution audax £599.99

LIGHT ON THE WALLET. LIGHTWEIGHT ON THE ROAD.

SHIMANO 2300-EQUIPPED BUTTED ALLOY ROAD BIKE

STEEL FRAME MATCHED WITH CARBON FORK

Our new-for-2013 Revolution Sabre takes advantage of Shimano’s fine new A070 shifters (RRP £99.99) to create a best buy in Dual Control-equipped road bikes. Dual Control means the gear shifters are integrated with the brake levers. Dual Control shifters make it easy to change gear, without loss of momentum or control, with your hands perched on those ergonomic Shimano A070 brake hoods.

Like the Revolution Sabre, the Continental is built with a 7005 butted aluminium frame and a hi-tensile steel fork which combine light weight, strength and mudguard-compatible versatility. The Continental also shares the Sabre’s fast, sure-footed 700x25 CST tyres and judder-free Tektro dual pivot brakes. Then the Continental is upgraded with a Shimano 2300 transmission with 2x8 shifters, over the Sabre’s 2x7 speed gearing.

Our audacious Audax combines a Reynolds butted steel frame (revered since the 1930’s for its light sprung feel) with a 21st Century shock-damping carbon fibre fork. Its Shimano Sora 3x9 shifters and mechs click slickly through the wide gear range (34/50 chainset x 12-27 cogs). Put it all together and you have a cross between a touring bike and a fast road bike, perfect for étapes, sportives and general getting around.

ROAD BIKE SPEED. TOURING BIKE VERSATILITY.

SUPERB VALUE DISC BRAKE-EQUIPPED CROSS

A LIGHTER WEIGHT CROSS IS EASIER TO BEAR

‘The guys at the Bike Co-op have got all the basics right: ideal gear range, decent brakes and good shifting, all hung on a good frame. A comfortable convincing ride with oodles of versatility.’ Cycling Plus, December 2011.

The benefits of disc brakes are proven on today’s better quality MTBs: near-effortless lever action, more power, longer pad life, less maintenance, wheel rims that don’t wear thin.... Cross bikes benefit equally from the all-weather control that disc brakes deliver. That’s why our Cross Sport Disc boasts Tektro Lyra ball bearing disc brakes. Equally impressive, the gearing is upgraded from the standard model’s Shimano 2300 2x8 to new and improved Shimano Sora 2x9 speed shifting.

Like every bike on this double-page spread (bar the steel Audax), the Cross Pro is built on our new 7005 aluminium frame with butted seat tube. Except here, the frame is brushed, not painted. This makes it lighter weight, more beautiful, and you’ll never have to worry about chipped paint. The Cross Pro’s carbon fork (over steel) reduces the weight further, as does its Shimano Tiagra 2x10 gearing and its FSA Gossamer 2-piece crankset. Upgrading the disc brakes to Avid BB-5 level is the cherry on the icing.

Sizes: 52, 55, 58cm. Colour: Brushed. Weight: 11.6kg. Web Ref: 14929

Rather than rest on the laurels of a kind review, for 2013 we have upgraded our 3 Cross bikes with lighter 7005 aluminium frames (butted seat tube) which feature fully enclosed cables, top tube routed to ensure smooth shifting, while the slimmer legged steel fork saves more grams.

Revolution Track £359.99

Revolution Belter £599.99

Revolution Shadow £999.99

GEAR FREE & MECH-LESS, THE JOY OF BEING SINGLE

INDEPENDENTLY RATED: NO CHAIN, NO OIL, NO MESS

A BELTER WITH GEARS? ALL’S FINE WITH ALFINE.

This is our best selling singlespeed. An absence of gear mechanisms, levers or multiple cogs reduces the bike’s weight, price and complexity. The sealed cartridge bearing flip-flop rear hub facilitates instant fixie conversion. In December 2012 the road.cc website hailed the Revolution Track among the best road bikes under £500. For 2013, to further emphasise this bike’s retro-cool appeal, it now comes with 700x25 gumwall tyres.

Taking silent running singlespeed simplicity to the next level, this beautiful bike is named after its Gates Centretrack Belt Drive transmission. Here, the traditional steel chain makes way for a lighter weight, harder wearing carbon belt. This belt will never need oiled so it will stay much cleaner. ‘The Belter is silent without trying. It’s perfect for the cyclist who values clean hands and a bike that just works.’ The Independent.

The new Revolution Shadow combines the clean -riding delights of belt drive with the similarly low maintenance benefits of Shimano Alfine, where the gear mechanisms are protected from the elements inside the rear wheel’s hub. Alfine enables gear shifts whether you’re pedalling or not. With a 306% difference between top and bottom gear, the Alfine 8-speed hub offers as wide a range of gears as you might ever need.

BICYCLE COURIER-INSPIRED SINGLESPEED

PREFER GEARS, BUT EIGHT WILL SUFFICE?

THE COURIER RACE, DISC BRAKE EQUIPPED

Looking for a tough, no-nonsense, low maintenance city bike? Our cycle courier-inspired singlespeed is a best buy. The sealed cartridge bearing flip-flop rear hub lets you choose between freewheel and fixie mode. Its CST Kevlar-Inside 700x32 tyres offer the kind of sure-footed, puncture-resistant yet pacey ride we once believed was the preserve of the best German tyre companies.

Singlespeeds and fixies have their appeal but they’re not for everyone, hence this Shimano Acera 8-speed equiped Courier. The 7005 alloy frame (used on every Courier model) is strong but lightweight, and built to ‘comfort road’ bike geometry (73˚ seat tube / 70.5˚ head tube angle) to deliver a faster, more engaging ride than you might have learned to expect from a bicycle that comes under the ‘commuter / hybrid’ banner.

The whole Courier ethos is about making bikes simpler. Upgrading this model with Clarks ball bearing mechanical disc brakes (over V-brakes) creates a bike that works better and is simpler to look after. Disc brake pads are harder, so they require less frequent adjustment to compensate for pad wear. Moving the brakes from the well weathered wheel rims to the hubs improves performance, and prevents rims wearing thin.

OLD-SCHOOL LOOKS. UP-TO-DATE TECHNOLOGY.

STURMEY ARCHER EMPHASISES BIKE’S HERITAGE

The step-through frame and the swept back handlebars invite you to hop on to our Heritage bike and take off - perhaps with a little picnic in its basket. This wicker basket personifies this bike’s appeal. It might look traditional, but its hi-tech click-fix bracket means you can fit or remove the basket in seconds. Similarly, the bike’s frame might look chunky, but it’s built with lightweight aluminium tubing. The Shimano twist-shifter makes it easy to click through the 7 gears, and the Tektro alloy V-brakes are as good as you’ll find on similarly-priced MTBs.

This even more deluxe version of the Heritage comes with Sturmey Archer 3-speed hub gears and roller brakes, proven since the 1930s for their low maintenance reliability. With their mechanisms enclosed inside the wheel hubs, Sturmey Archer brakes and gears are more resistant to wear and tear compared with brake callipers and gear mechs, which are obliged to live on the outside of the bike in all weathers.

OUR FIRST-EVER WOMEN’S COURIER RACE DISC

FOR LIFE, LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS

CARBON FORK FINESSE + HYDRO BRAKE POWER

With its more compact female-friendly frame, this Courier Race Disc offers the majority of women a more comfortable reach to the bars. Talking of bars, this bike’s 58cm wide alloy semi-riser bar is 2cm shorter than the bars on the standard model. To further fine tune your riding position, both versions of the Courier Race Disc have adjustablerise stems. Taking such care of the details helps ensure you get to enjoy a bike that fits just right.

With its wider, more rugged 700x42 tyres, its 75mmtravel SunTour NVX fork with lockout, its Tektro hydraulic disc brakes and its Shimano Acera 3x8 Rapidfire gearing, this go-anywhere bike could be your personal declaration of independence. The suspension forks and gnarly tyres make it fit for blue-grade mountain biking. Puff up the tyres and lock out the suspension, the Pursuit will keep you up to speed in town.

This bike’s Tektro hydraulic disc brakes are smoother operating and more controllable, effective and confidence inspiring than any cable-operated bicycle brake you’ve ever tried.

Verdict: Stiff-framed urban bike that encourages you to ride fast – but has the reassurance of hydraulic disc brakes to slow you down again. Performance & Value: 4/5.’ thebikelist.co.uk.

REVOLUTION BIKES

revolution ascent XC £289.99 SHARP LOOKING MTB WITH LOCK-OUT FORK

The Revolution Ascent XC is built upon all we have learned over the past 20 years, producing our own great-value mountain bikes. The frame is 7005 aluminium - one of the strongest alloys used in bicycle frame construction. It comes in 5 sizes (14 to 22 inch) so we’ll have one to fit any rider from around 4 feet 10” to 6 feet 6”. The SunTour fork’s 100mm travel can be locked out - a rare feature on a bike costing so little.

OUR CLASSIC URBAN MTB-STYLE COMMUTER HYBRID

TOURING BIKE TYRES CREATE A MORE PACEY HYBRID

OPEN FRAMED VERSION OF THE STREETFINDER

The Trailfinder is built with the same 7005 aluminium frame, 26” alloy wheels and Tektro alloy V-brakes as our Revolution Ascent XC mountain bike. Then it’s civilized for city use with semi-smooth 26x1.95” tyres. Its mudguards shield you from road spray. Its adjustable-rise stem lets you fine tune the bar height. Its rigid steel fork saves weight and, unlike a suspension fork, it will never require maintenance.

In contrast with our Trailfinder frame, which is built to take 26” wheels, the Streetfinder’s 7005 aluminium frame is built to take 700c wheels. That’s significant because nothing influences the riding characteristics of a bike more than its tyres. So it goes with the Streetfinder, whose 700x38 touring-bike tyres zip along faster than 26x1.95” MTB-sized tyres, yet offer more cushioning than 700x25 road-bike rubber.

With its strong-yet-lightweight alloy frame, its zero-maintenance hi-tensile steel fork, its convenient quick-release alloy wheels, its tough, fast-rolling CST 700x38 tyres, its sound Tektro alloy V-brakes, its click-shifting Shimano EZ Fire 3x6 gears, its practical mudguards and its useful pannier rack, you can be confident that this ladies’ open-frame version of the Streetfinder is the technical equal of the gents’ version.

DISC BRAKES AND LOCK-OUT FORK

DESIGNED TO FIT MOST WOMEN BETTER

BEST BUY WOMEN’S MTB WITH DISC BRAKES

Looking for a disc brake equipped MTB with a lock-out suspension fork? We defy you to find a better buy. This is our Revolution Ascent XC upgraded with Clarks CMD-11 mechanical disc brakes, which are cable operated, and move on ball bearings to ensure smooth, predictable performance. As with the standard Ascent XC, the 7005 alloy frame, the 100mm forks and the Shimano 3x7 EZ Fire gears complete a fine spec.

From its lifetime guaranteed 7005 alloy frame to its 100mm-travel SunTour suspension fork with lockout, the Spur XC is like our Ascent XC except here, the more compact frame offers a better fit for the majority of women. The Spur XC’s shorter top tube (AKA crossbar) offers an easier reach to the 60cm wide bars (which are a female-friendly 2cm shorter than the Ascent’s).

This is the women’s compact-geometry aluminium -framed Revolution Spur XC upgraded with Clarks CMD-11 mechanical disc brakes, front and rear. Owning an MTB with smoother-operating brakes, which require less frequent maintenance, helps make you a more confident cyclist, whether you use the bike as a spur to escape off-road, or for general getting around on-road.

OUR MOST COMFORTABLY UPRIGHT BIKE

TRADITIONAL LADIES’ VERSION OF THE PATHFINDER

The Pathfinder is built on a special comfort geometry frame. Its much longer head tube allows you to set the handlebars even higher than you can on our Trailfinder or Streetfinder. Unlike many of today’s performance bicycles, which oblige you to stretch flat-backed to reach the low handlebars, the Pathfinder lets you sit upright and ride tall in the saddle. As such, it’s a stylish modern take on the classic ‘sit up and beg’ bike.

This version of the Pathfinder adds the easy-on, easy-off benefits of a traditional step-through ladies’ frame, while retaining the comfort features of the unisex model. Like the unisex model, the Women’s Pathfinder frame’s tall head tube and adjustable-rise quill stem enable an upright riding position, while the 50mm-travel suspension fork and the new faster-for-2013 CST 700x40 tyres ensure a cushioned ride.

REVOLUTION BIKES

In contrast to the Revolution Country Traveller’s 7005 aluminium frame and cantilever brakes, our Country Explorer is built with a Reynolds CrMo steel frame equipped with disc brakes. Ask any ferrous fans and they’ll tell you that thin-wall Reynolds tubing introduces a comfortable lightsprung feel to the ride. As for the brakes, Avid BB5s are ball bearing actuated to offer instant engagement and release, plus their harder brake pads will last longer - as will the wheel rims.

For a start it’s lighter a lot lighter. Some say weight doesn’t matter on tour. I disagree, and besides tourers should be versatile.’ In response to requests from customers looking for a shorter-reach frame with more stepover clearance, our versatile, lightweight tourer will be available in 2 new sizes, 46 & 49cm from April 2013.

Very impressed with these panniers. I’m planning to do some touring this summer, and I needed some panniers to get me on my way. I’d looked around and had seen plenty of cheap options, but reviews always revealed that the cheaper equipment was generally flimsy, and would fall apart. These panniers are superb. I’ve been using them through the winter for commuting, and they have held up perfectly to the task... If you are upgrading from winter tyres or cyclocross tyres for something with great protection and faster rolling these are the tyres.... Now I reckon I can keep up with the roadies! misterbee: Bike Co-op Customer.

I love this stand! I asked my Dad to buy me one for Christmas several years ago, and he was impressed with how well made it is, and what good value for money (he is an engineer). It has had a lot of use and is still going strong - good as new even and I have recommended them to several other people. It really is fantastic for fettling or cleaning your bike - everything is much easier when you don’t have to hold the bike up at the same time. Being a shorty (5’4”) the light weight of the stand and the adjustability are great.

I’ve used mine a couple of times. It works really well without fuss or bother and for the price it’s a no brainer.

I chose this pump because it looks and works exactly like a traditional bike pump, so it’s easy to use every time and no faffing about. The quality is top grade, and it really packs out a lot of air.... If you need a new pump you can’t go wrong with this one.

As SPD (rather than SPD-SL) this is not the most common choice for a road bike. As the name suggests, they may be aimed more at the touring market. However, for an old set of knees they are great because of the wide platform, adjustable degree of play and ease with which one can clip in and out...

Use it post-wash on the chain to prevent corrosion. Once bike is off the car rack at home, I then wipe off the chain and apply a wax based lube.

COMMUTER | HYBRID COMFORT Commuter/hybrid is a term we use to describe any bicycle that is neither a full-on road racing bike or a mountain bike. The comfort hybrids and classic bikes shown on this double-page spread are defined by their wide smooth tyres and their more upright riding position. Owning a bike like this is your passport to making the most of summer and enjoying relaxed days out on your local byways. BRITANNIA RULES

THE PRINCESS IS THE MOST REGAL PASHLEY

Still hand built in Stratford upon Avon, Pashley are England’s oldest surviving bicycle manufacturer, building frames the old proven way with lugged steel frame tubes and colour-co-ordinated mudguards and chainguard. Sturmey Archer 3-speed brakes and hub gears are equally old-school and reliable. The Brooks B67 saddle (RRP £80), the cork grips and the 26” cream tyres set off the blue frame perfectly.

The Brittania shares the Pashley Poppy’s traditional appeal. Then it’s even more impressively equipped with wider ratio 5-speed hub gears to make hill climbs easier. The bolted-on ever-available front light is powered by a front dynohub so it will never need batteries. The rear mudguard is fitted with a long-battery-life LED. The more swept-back handlebars proudly support a wicker basket.

With its Buckingham Black paint job and its gold lined mudguards the Princess Sovereign is even more regal than the technically similar Pashley Brittania, and it comes even more fully equipped. The full chain-case and skirt guard protect your clothing. Its Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres are the most puncture resistant we’ve ever tested. Its integral ‘Dutch-style’ lock prevents a footpad pedalling off with your Princess.

PASHLEY’S FASTER, LIGHTER-WEIGHT 531 3-SPEED

MODERN UK-DESIGNED HYBRID, WAS £400 IN 2012

ONE OF THE FIRST NAMES IN HYBRID BIKES.

Pashley describe the Guv’nor as their ‘path racing bike’ - a cross between a track bike and a road bike. The thin-walled Reynolds 531 butted steel frame and the more minimal spec make the Guv’nor significantly lighter and sportier than Pashley’s ‘roadster’ bikes on the previous page. Its North Road bars come fitted with handmade leather grips which perfectly match the antique brown Brooks B17 ti-railed saddle (RRP £187).

Looking for a British-designed all-purpose commuter bike with more up-to-date, lighter-weight parts than a Pashley? With its alloy frame, alloy wheels, Continental Contact 700x37 tyres, Shimano Altus 3x8 EZ Fire gearing, alloy V-brakes, chromoplastic mudguards and alloy pannier rack, the Ridgback Meteor is the most complete hybrid at this price.

Specialized produced their first Crossroads in 1989. When it comes to producing bikes that cope equally well on roads and towpaths, Specialized have the experience, the A1 Premium Aluminium frames, the tough-butsmooth 700x40 Borough tyres and the Body Geometry saddles to get these bikes just right.

COMMUTER | HYBRID SPEED HYBRIDS Looking for the speed and exhilarating ride qualities of a lightweight road bike but prefer flat bars to drops? Speed hybrids are the answer. Speed hybrids are sometimes called urban flatbars. That’s a good description because lower bars encourage you to get your head down and pedal harder. ENDURA LUMINITE JACKET £84.99

You don’t have to carry a bag on your back. If it has a rack, let your bike take the strain. This pannier will carry as much as a decent-sized cycling rucsac. It’s waterproof. It’s fast and easy to fit or remove. The Altura Arc is sold singly because it might be all the carrying capacity you’ll need. If you want more, buy 2.

Printing the Altura logo in a script-style font, bestows the looks and charm of a jersey from the Eddy Merckx era. The short front zip continues the 1960s/70s vibe. So do the 3 rear pockets. The one concession to modernity is the polyester fabric, which makes it as fast drying as one of today’s tops.

This fully seam-sealed breathable waterproof jacket does more than protect you from the elements. Its highly conspicuous colour, plus its multiple retro-reflective stripes and dots, plus its integral LED light, built into the tail, can’t help but make you highly visible, hence safer on the road.

WHYTE R7: FAST URBAN SERIES Whyte borrowed key elements of their awardwinning MTBs to create their R7 city bikes, optimised for UK urban riding. The frame’s long wheelbase and 69˚ head angle deliver limo-like stability. Curvy seat stays damp shock. The short stem and wide semi-riser bars enhance slow-speed stability and manoeuvrability. A compact drivetrain with a 9 or 10-speed cassette ensures smooth shifting over a wide gear range. Then there are the brakes. Whyte, we believe, are the only company who insist on hydraulic disc brakes on every hybrid bike. Quite right too. They wouldn’t dream of fitting a mountain bike with lesser brakes, so why drop their standards for urban bikes? Better still, the rear brake calliper is bolted inside the rear triangle of the 3 aluminium-framed R7 models (though the carbon Montpellier) so disc brakes don’t preclude fitting a standard pannier rack & mudguard.

ALTURA NIGHT VISION EVO JACKET £99.99

REVOLUTION STOW ULTRALITE RUCSAC £44..99

The Cat Eye Strada Cordless has long been a favourite computer with cyclists looking to log their speed and mileage stats. This new Slim ‘flat-screen’ version of the Strada does exactly the same job, but the screen is 23% bigger and 35% thinner and lighter. The fork-mounted speed sensor is also 47% thinner, making it that bit more aerodynamic.

Combining CoolMax with merino wool creates, perhaps, the most comfortable cycling jersey we’ve ever offered. Its wallet-sized rear pocket has a concealed security zip. Its zero-constriction fit feels great when you ride, without making you feel self-conscious off the bike - as you might in a more technicolour cycling top.

Breathable, waterproof, pockets aplenty and it ensures you’re seen: that's the proven Night Vision Evo formula that makes it our best selling cycling jacket. Its soft-mesh lining makes it especially comfortable to wear - even over just a base layer.

ugged hybrid bikes are designed to work well in the widest range of circumstance. If you’re looking for a single bike that’s capable of near anything, one of these trail-competent commuter bikes might be the perfect choice. Trail Competent. The rugged hybrid’s defining features are its suspension forks and wide 700c tyres. A mountain bike novice would be perfectly comfortable taking a rugged hybrid round a trail centre green loop. Commuter Bike. A rugged hybrid’s 700x35/38c tyres are fast enough for city commuting. Eyelets and clearance make these bikes mudguard and rack compatible. WHYTE C7: ALL TERRAIN SERIES C7 All Terrain bikes share many of the qualities that have made Whyte R7 bikes (P.24) so highly sought-after: the hydroformed 6061 aluminium frame, the hydraulic disc brakes, the slack 69˚ head angle, the short stem, the wide bars and the signature Whyte UK-proof features such as fully enclosed cables, and mudguard and rack compatibility. The clue to the C7 difference is in the sub-title, All Terrain Series. To make these bike more comfortable and stable when you want to take them off the beaten path - say on one of those scenic locations the bikes are named after such as the Malverns - every C7 All Terrain bike comes with wider tyres, a suspension fork and a wider triple-chainset gear range.

THE PERFECT CROSSOVER CITY BIKE

WELL-NAMED REYNOLDS 725 FRAME CROSS BIKE

A SRAM/AVID-EQUIPPED CROSS BIKE RARITY

What a perfect name for an English-designed cross bike that doubles as a city bike. Whyte’s frame geometry (69.3 degree head angle and 73-74 degree seat angle) makes the Kings Cross supremely stable. The shifting is Shimano 2x9. New ergonomic Sora Dual Control levers operate the ProMax cable disc brakes. Thanks to their harder pads, disc brakes need less maintenance than a standard cross bike’s cantilever brakes.

Col de la Croix de Fer is a classic Tour de France climb. It’s also a perfect name for an iron cross. The frame isn’t any old iron. It’s Reynolds 725 CrMo steel. The gearing is Tiagra 2x10. A bike this good might inspire you to attempt 5.5% gradient 30km ascents such as the Col de la Croix de Fer. Once you reach the top you’ll enjoy the descent in confidence, knowing that the cable disc brakes are the world’s best, Avid BB-7.

If you’re more a SRAM man or woman, you’ll be excited by this Apex-equipped beauty. SRAM Apex Double Tap shifters precisely guide the chain over the 11-32 cassette to offer the widest 2x10 road bike gear range. Avid BB5 cable disc brakes provide the stopping power. The frame and fork are 7000-Series alloy. Eastway’s E28 sealed bearing wheels are built to 0.3mm tolerances, (1.0mm is the industry standard).

ELECTRIC BIKES ‘IT’S LIKE RIDING WITH A TAILWIND’ You might have heard the lazy comment, electric bikes are for people who aren’t fit enough to ride a ‘real bike’. Believe us, that’s so wrong. Whenever we lend eBikes to ‘real cyclists’, they almost always return with huge grins. Their most frequent comment, it’s like riding with a tailwind - all the time. They’re reluctant to return the loan bike. That’s no surprise when you come to think about it. Who doesn’t love the idea of a faster bike you can enjoy, no sweat?

FRONT WHEEL DRIVE

CRANK DRIVE

An eBike’s motor powers either the front wheel, the rear wheel or the crank. Front wheel drive is the simplest system. Having the extra weight of the motor on the front makes the bike feel better balanced and makes for a sedate and stable ride. If you get a puncture, a motorised front wheel is considerably easier to remove than a rear.

Here, the electric bike’s motor directly assists every turn of the crank. Crank drive is often lighter weight than wheel drive. Riding a crank-drive eBike can feel smoother than front or rear wheel drive - especially on hill climbs when you’re going to most appreciate power assistance. Crank drive eBikes rarely have a throttle.

REAR WHEEL DRIVE As with RWD performance cars, a rear wheel drive motor’s extra torque can be a powerful asset. Bike companies who produce both front and rear wheel drive eBikes reserve RWD for their highest-powered models. If you intend using your eBike on hilly terrain such as the Highlands or the Yorkshire Moors, a RWD motor is your best option.

The new Giant AluxX frame boasts neat internal routing for the gear, brake and electric cables. For 2013, all their bikes will be manufactured in the Daimler/Mercedes’ Smart bike factory in Germany. Wisper’s hi-torque (55Nm!) rear wheel drive motor can deliver more power assist from the off, and can sustain it for longer on hilly terrain. Like the Giant Twist, the Wisper automatically senses when power assist is required, based upon your pedalling input. Better still, the Wisper has a throttle. Whenever you feel you could do with more power, twist the throttle and go! Add hydraulic disc brakes and integral lighting: you have one formidable machine.

Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op’s buying team take every opportunity to visit the companies who supply us. On returning from a recent trip to the Netherlands to visit Koga (somebody has to do it) they made two telling points.

1

Koga’s was the smoothest, best organised and most professional bicycle assembly operation they have ever witnessed. Koga’s rigorous product testing was second to none.

2

Koga’s new 2013 eBikes are the best our buyers have ever ridden. And, trust us, these guys have tried out dozens of electric power-assist machines over the past few years. Even before they put these Kogas through their paces, our buyers loved the fact that every Koga eBike looked like an ‘acoustic bike’. Note how Koga discreetly mount the battery pack on top of the eBike’s rear rack. They’re also the quietest eBikes you can buy. On a Koga you can enjoy the deceit of flying past fitter riders who will never know your ride is power assisted. When you get a Koga, you’re buying into a company with a great heritage. Greg Herbold put Koga MTBs on the map when he was crowned downhill world champion in 1990. Closer to home, Mark Beaumont completed his record breaking round-the-world ride on a Koga. Koga’s E-Lement and E-Xtension borrow key elements from that £2,000 touring bike, from its triple-butted alloy frame to its 700x37 Schwalbe tyres. Famed for their limousine-like riding qualites, every Koga aluminium frame is backed with a lifetime warranty. Heck, even the frame’s paint job is covered with a 10 year warranty. This is yet another assurance that if you get a Koga, you’re destined to be a happy eBiker for a long, long time.

THINKING ABOUT IT? CALL 0845 257 0808 or 0131 331 5010 AND ARRANGE AN E-BIKE TEST RIDE

KOGA E-LEMENT £2,398.99 Run Distance: up to 135km. 36V 11Ah 396Wh Li-ion battery charge time: 3-4 hour charge. To ensure unparalleled performance and reliability, Koga employ Bosch to manufacture the E-Lement’s 50Nm hi-torque crank drive motor (cf our benchmark Giant Twist’s 25Nm torque motor). The brakes are also Germany’s finest - Magura MT2 hydraulic disc. Its Feathershock fork incorporates a damper inside the head tube so it’s much lighter weight than a regular suspension fork. Its Shimano SLX 1x10 transmission guarantees slick shifting. Integrated lighting (25 Lux front!) makes the bike complete.

KOGA E-XTENSION £2,798.99 Run Distance: up to 143km. 36V 14Ah 504W Li-ion: 3-4h charge.

The E-Comfort does indeed boast comfort-hybrid bike features such as high, swept back bars, low-maintenance Shimano Nexus 8 hub gears, a coaster front brake and a full chainguard. The front hub-enclosed 30 Nm High Torque motor underlines this Koga’s stately balanced-ride vibe.

The Koga X-Tension’s 40 Nm High Torque rear wheel motor might be silent but it delivers maximum oomph. The Disc brakes are Shimano. The Shimano Deore 3x9 transmission reveals Koga’s extended ambition for this bike, as does its deluxe Busch & Müller (40 Lux front) lighting.

edinburgh

Spring time means many things to me but when it comes to my commute it means skinny tyres, dry roads, daylight and the opportunity to get my Strava plugged in and smash some personal records. So the new tyres have now been purchased and fitted to my cross bike and the go faster stripes have been duly applied. I’m doing 14 miles each way most days of the week and when you are riding the same roads you need to find fresh challenges to keep the fire lit. For me it’s all about pushing myself to improve. I’m relatively new to the drop bar but definitely converted. The difference in speed from riding MTBs and even street bikes is something to behold. With Strava I can map my rides and chase particular segments (safely of course!) and will freely admit that I get a real buzz from competing with my fellow cyclists. I rarely pass another commuter now without wondering….’Are they on Strava?’

Why one would wish to rush through such a gift is a mystery to me. The hybrid is built for comfort and convenience, not for speed, yet there is just a quarter of an hour difference between my ride to work and commuting by car. Public transport takes an hour longer, regrettably. With the right clothing one can manage whatever the weather. Panniers are invaluable for, not just the change of clothing, and food, but also for nabbing some shopping on the way home. My average speed of about 12 miles per hour makes possible conversation with fellow cyclists, pedestrians, their pets.... As regular commuters, we get to know each other’s names. We look to the mutual concerns of our commuting community. We warn one another of hazards ahead such as ice or broken bottles. Good exercise in fresh air, surrounded by the natural world and awareness of the changes in the weather and the seasons, are benefits of riding to and from work. Also the trip affords a time to plan the day ahead, and at end of day, time to unwind from work. I find that commuting by bike is invaluable in maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Back in the day, after laundering their shorts, cyclists had to replenish the dried-out chamois with cream. A modern short’s padding doesn’t require moisturising. However, we still highly recommend shea butter-rich Udderly Smooth as an effective skin lube that helps prevent infections, rashes, chafing and saddle sores.

Small enough to snug under the saddle and not compromise your bike’s speed potential: large enough to take a couple of tubes, a multitool, tyre levers and a couple of energy bars - that’s the Speed Seatpack. Velcro straps make this pack speedy to fit.

This bright yellow jersey will get you seen by day. Its retro-reflective stripes glow at night. Even if it didn’t have these safety features, the Night Vision top is worth considering for its precise multi-panel fit. Its wicking fabric keeps you drier. 3 rear pockets keep essentials to hand. A wee tab takes a rear light.

Losing the waistband and gaining a bib makes for a better-fitting short that will never expose your lower back. This bib short stands out for its stretch Progel chamois, which moulds to your shape. Equally impressive, its Shield waterproof seat panel helps guarantee immunity to road splash.

hat better way to enjoy summer than to take to the open road on a bicycle whose comfort features match its speed potential?

For the first time since the early 1980s, road bikes are outselling mountain bikes in our shops. We believe this resurgence is, in part, due to the availability of a new breed of comfort road bikes. Also called endurance road bikes, these bicycles offer the light weight and exhilaration of a classic road bike, tempered with comfort elements such as slightly higher handlebars and more forgiving frame geometries. The following pages will give you an idea of the comfort road bikes you’ll find - along with appropriate clothing and equipment to go with them - at edinburghbicycle.com

Cycling Plus pitted the Defy 1 against its closest contenders and, for the second year in a row, concluded it was the best road bike you could buy at a Bike to Work Scheme-compliant £1,000 price. ‘...A sublime blend of easy speed, sure-footed handling and a premium ride at all times. Add impressive spec and impeccable detailing and it’s still the benchmark all-rounder on the four-figure frontier.’

Sure, the Defy 4 spec is detuned with a moneysaving 2x8-speed Shimano 2300 drivetrain, compared with the Defy 1’s Shimano 105 gearing. Of course it has a threaded bottom bracket, rather than an oversized press-fit system. But with its AluxX alloy frame and its Advanced composite fork blades with OverDrive tapered steerer, the Defy 4 shares the fundamentals that make the Giant Defy 1 such a sweet ride.

BRYTON RIDER 50 GPS £199.99

Designed in conjunction with 2006 Tour de France winner, Oscar Pereiro, their Advanced Ergonomic Performance AEP line takes Dare2B cycle clothing to a whole new level. The 8-panel main body of these shorts are a deluxe Lycra. The mesh bib prevents overheating. The 3D moulded CoolMax insert is one superior chamois.

90% of cycling jerseys are 100% polyester. This one is 12% Lycra / 88% polyester. This blend makes for a smoother, more stretchy shirt, all the more able to expand and recover in tandem with your exertions. An anti-bacterial finish helps keep it fresh. Three rear pockets make it fit for cycling. The 3/4-length front zip ensures this is one cool top.

The Bryton Rider 50 combines all-UK mapping, turn-by-turn satellite navigation and a cycle computer with speed, distance, altitude, compass, stopwatches and timers. Being GPS-enabled, there are no magnets or wheel sensors to fit, as is the case with traditional cycle computers. This simplicity makes it much easier to swap GPS computers, like the Bryton, between bikes.

CANNONDALE SYNAPSE SORA TRIPLE £699.99

EASTWAY R 4.0 ALLOY £798.99

ROUBAIX-LIKE RIDE ON AN ALUMINIUM BUDGET

SYNAPSE SAVES YOU FROM A HARSH RIDE

OUR LATEST BRITISH-BASED BIKE BRAND

With an aluminium frame rather than carbon, the Secteur is a more affordable version of the Roubaix - Specialized’s pioneering endurance road bike. Crucially, the Secteur retains the Roubaix’s FACT carbon fork blades with Zertz shock-absorbing implants. Factor in the Secteur’s slim seat stays and you have the making of a bike that copes with roads that are less than smooth without compromising its speed potential.

Like every bicycle in this section, the Synapse is a lightweight speed machine whose taller head tube and longer wheelbase promotes all-day comfort. Its carbon SAVE (Synapse Active Vibration Elimination) forks live up to their name. Its SAVE aluminium seat stays curve to meet the rear dropouts, to damp potential shock from ill-kept roads. Its triple-chainset Shimano Sora 3x9 gearing is fit for near-any gradient.

Mudguard-compatible 7000-aluminium frame & carbon fork. Full SRAM Apex drivetrain with compact 50/34 chainset and Exact Actuation derailleurs that stay in adjustment. Eastway’s own E24 Japanese steel bearing 32-spoke wheels, built to 3-times closer tolerances than the industry standard. It’s easy to see why we were moved to add Eastway to our roster of interesting British-based bicycle brands.

ROAD BIKES TAKE FLIGHT Looking for something even lighter weight and more exotic than the aluminium alloy-framed bikes on the 2 previous pages? Check out the carbon fibre and titanium -framed offers on this double -page spread. When bikes get this light you feel you can take flight. Hills? What hills? Looking for something more traditional? How about a steel-framed Genesis. This might cost more to produce than an alloy frame, but if you prefer the light-sprung feel of Reynolds steel, you’ll agree that the old ways have their merits - same as you might prefer vinyl over CDs.

GIANT DEFY ADVANCED 2 £1,998.99

CARBON ROAD BIKE BARGAIN OF THE YEAR

CYCLING PLUS BIKE OF THE YEAR 2013

WAS GOOD VALUE AT £1400, NOW IT’S A STEAL.

Last year’s entry-level Roubaix cost £1,600. Switching from Shimano Tiagra 2x10 to Shimano Sora 2x9 gearing, this year’s standard Roubaix has dropped one rear cog. And £400. Yet you still get the essential Paris-Roubaix-proven full carbon monocoque frame and fork with shock dissipating Zertz that made the Roubaix the first name in endurance geometry road bikes.

‘Thanks to a pitch-perfect and intoxicating combination of smoothness, comfort, speed and handling Giant became the first brand to regain the Bike of the Year title with its Defy Advanced 2. Giant’s own carbon technology labs took raw Toray 700 carbon filament and created bespoke specifications into the lay-up of this classy chassis. We’d go as far to say that the Giant Defy Advanced is the finest sportive/endurance frameset ever created.’ Cycling Plus: April 2013.

With its Italian-designed 3K carbon monocoque frame and its carbon fork with tapered steerer, the Mekk is an elegant addition to our range of sportive-ready rides. Fine detailing includes an embedded alloy plate to protect the RH chainstay. Not that the Mekk should ever suffer chain-suck given its full Shimano 105 drivetrain.

SPORTFUL GRUPPETTO BIB SHORT CLASSIC £84.99

SPORTFUL GRUPPETTO TEAM JERSEY £64.99

At only 18cm (7”) long, this polished-aluminium Presta-only push-fit pump is small enough to take on any ride. It comes with a frame-fit bracket. Alternatively, you could carry it in a back pocket. It’s only 82g. Its telescoping action inflates tyres twice as quickly as a similar sized inflator with less scope.

Designed for and race proven by Team Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank, this bib short’s AeroFlow Compress Lycra Power fabric’s dimpled texture optimises muscle support and aerodynamics. Flatlock stitching and seamless leg openings similarly help smooth your passage through turbulent airflow.

This jersey’s Drypro microfibre fabric was developed for its stretch, its fast wicking and for its aerodynamics, so this jersey is the Gruppetto Bib Short’s perfect partner. Its full length YKK zip facilitates temperature control. The hem’s comfortable silicone gripper elastic ensures the team jersey never rides up.

STEEL genesis equilibrium 00 £899.99 GENESIS PROVE STEEL REMAINS THE DEAL

In a world dominated by bike frames built with oversized aluminium or carbon tubing, there is something head-turning about a road bike like this Genesis. The Equilibrium 00 is built with comparatively skinny Reynolds butted steel tubes - just like most road racing bikes were up till the 1990s. Another welcome throwback is that this speedy Shimano Sora-equipped bike has eyelets and clearance for fitting mudguards.

Van Nicholas are Europe’s titanium bicycle specialists. They use no other frame material. A titanium tube weighs a third less than a steel tube of identical dimensions, yet it doesn’t have to be as oversized as aluminium or carbon to be as stiff and strong. That’s why the respectably equipped (SRAM Apex groupset, Mavic Aksium wheels) Ventus could be the lightest and most comfortable bike at this price.

hilst the endurance/comfort road bikes featured on the previous 4 pages have done a fantastic job of making fast, exciting bicycles more accessible for more people, the pure road bikes featured on the next 4 pages remain your best choice if you are looking for out and out performance. Every bicycle in this section is built on the lightest frame possible for the money. Its frame geometry will be identical to that company’s pro models. If you want a bike that rides as close as possible to Tom Boonen’s Specialized Tarmac, but for under a grand, the Allez is your number-one zero-compromise choice. When a bike is this good, you can train to gain the fitness and flexibility required to ride comfortably in the flat backed ‘aero tuck’ position. When a bike is this light, you’ll be getting up hills in a higher gear, faster than you would have thought possible on a typical everyday 14kg bike. To help you get the most from such fine bicycles, we are committed to offering a wonderful selection of authentic race-proven accessories and clothing from world-renowned companies such as Castelli, Sportful, and Garmin. As ever, the equipment featured here is just a snapshot of the authentic road cycling equipment on offer at edinburghbicycle.com.

The Allez range offers convincing evidence that Specialized are the experts when it comes to bringing elite bicycle innovation to more modestly-priced bikes. The Allez frame’s bowed top tube and skinny seatstays enhance vertical compliance. Its oversized down tube guarantees optimal power transfer. You might have seen a strikingly similar frame silhouette before - on Specialized’s Tour-proven 4-figure Tarmac carbon fibre bikes. The difference here is that Allez frames are double-butted A1 aluminium - as they have been since 1999. As such, we reckon that Specialized Allez bikes have introduced more people to the pleasure of riding a fast, perfectly balanced, lightweight (around 10 kilos) road bike than any other bicycle this century.

GREAT PRICE FOR SUCH AN ELITE FRAME

SHIMANO 105-EQUIPPED BUTTED ALLOY FRAME

ULTEGRA-EQUIPPED FOR UNDER A GRAND

The highly competent Shimano 2300 STI 3x8 drivetrain makes this our most affordable Cannondale road bike. Ever. CAAD8 means this bike is built on an 8th-generation CAAD (Cannondale Advanced Aluminium Design) frame. Although it’s not advertised as a ‘comfort road’ bike, the CAAD8 frame’s SAVE stays and carbon fork blades offer a smoother ride than you might expect from its classic road geometry.

Every Focus bike comes to us direct from their factory in Germany. Every frame, with a beautiful powder coated finish. Every wheel, hand trued to 0.3 millimetre (the accepted industry standard is true to 1mm). Every bike, the best spec for the money. So it goes with the Culebro SL 3.0, with its triple butted aluminium frame, its carbon fork and its Shimano 105 STI 2x10 gearing.

It takes astonishing Focus to produce a hydroformed triple butted alloy frame, equip it with a full carbon fork and Shimano Ultegra shifters and mechs, and sell it at this kind of price. It was this extraordinary value for money that inspired us to introduce Focus to our range, just last year. Judging from our customers’ response, that was one of our better decisions.

CARBON When you watch the Tour on telly this July, you can be sure of one thing. At least 90% of the bikes on show will be carbon That’s because no other frame material can match its lightweight stiffness. This translates to you, the rider, as a profound experience of immediacy. You pedal. You go faster with less effort. Customers come back from test riders saying, ‘You didn’t tell me this bike had an engine.’ ’To make the most of one of these lightweight flying machines, you want to dress in the best, such as Spain’s elite clothing brand, Exteondo, or Tour of Britain-proven Endura Equipe.

A synthesis of Specialized’s Tarmac road bike and their Shiv time trial triathlon bike, the Venge is the perfect marriage of aerodynamics and speed.

Etxeondo are an elite Spanish company. Their clothing is worn by Contador today. It graced the likes of Delgado, Kelly and Indurain in the past. Their Flux top’s Teflon-treated polyester fabric is seam sealed to maximise its water & wind resistance. This supple fabric makes it very packable. Its classic ‘racing cape’ cut won’t get in a flap.

The Reflex jersey is made in a Meryl Micro fabric described by the manufacturers as ‘the world’s first hollow-core bacteriostatic microfibre, which allows the skin to maintain its natural bacteria level’. Wearing this top thus promotes hygiene and moisture management when your efforts might otherwise get you in a sweat.

The Ator Bib short is constructed in a Lycra Plus fabric. Compared with regular Spandex, Lycra Plus is more durable, more comfortable and it maximises muscle support. LATEST VERSION OF 2012’s BIKE OF THE YEAR

The Cayo Evo 6.0 boasts the same quality frame that adorns the Focus Team bikes ridden by their pro riders on the major Tours. That’s significant because it’s common practice for bike companies to save their best carbon for their £4,000+ race frames and use a less exotic Toray filament, which won’t offer quite the same strength-tolightness ratio, for their entry-level carbon bikes.

The Cayo Evo 4.0 has the same Milan-San Remoproven frame as the Cayo Evo 6.0. Its carbon fork is Focus’ lighter weight T4 model. The STI shifters, gear mechs and brakes are all Shimano Ultegra. The Cayo Evo 4.0 shown here has compact 34/50t chainrings. If you’d prefer your Focus with a 52/39/30 triple or a 53/39 race chainset, we can order the bike for you, equipped as you like it.

Cycling Plus rated the Focus Izalco Pro 3.0 the best of 25 bikes tested because ‘for the price, you are getting exactly the same frame as the £5,799 team bike, so the Izalco can be upgraded to your heart’s content. Trek, Cannondale and Giant all offer lower grade carbon versions of their flagship designs, while Focus offer its best, making its value for money soar.’

WOMEN’S ROAD BIKES ANANICHOOLA AnaNichoola is the creation of successful British racing cyclist (and star of ITV4’s The Cycle Show) Anna Glowinski.

I spotted a gap in the market, time and time again hearing the complaint that there was no fashionable cycle clothing for women. We second that emotion 100%. Check our complete women’s cycling range, dedicated to ‘performance at the highest level’ at edinburghbicycle.com

TOP 5 ROAD QUESTIONS

O

ne of the benefits of visiting an Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op shop is that we are not ‘box pushers’. We are staffed by cycling enthusiasts. Our guys know their stuff. Their product knowledge grows daily. Our bicycle and equipment selection is based upon what we use ourselves and/or would recommend to our friends and family. Nothing delights our staff more than to pass on our experience of what works for us - and what doesn’t. For this catalogue, we put our heads together and chose the 5 questions our customers most commonly ask about road bikes.

WHICH IS THE CORRECT SADDLE FOR ME? The classic comment we hear when a road bike novice visits one of our shops is, ‘Nice bike, but I don’t fancy that skinny saddle’. A road bike saddle is indeed slim, but for good reason. When you ride with your hands on the drop bars, there’s hardly any weight on the saddle (and none whatsoever when you get out the saddle to climb). In such circumstances, a wide cushioned saddle, which can chafe your thighs, is more of an encumbrance than a comfort. Correctly designed, a road saddle should disappear under you, so you

barely notice it’s there. The Specialized BG Avatar Comp Gel pictured below is one such saddle. BG means it’s a clinically proven Body Geometry saddle. The BG saddle’s central cutaway ensures your weight is supported by the sit bones, and thus takes the weight off the sensitive perineal nerves and arteries in between. To further ensure its sit-bone gel cushioning is exactly where you require it, this saddle is available in a choice of three different widths.

WHAT IS THE BEST POSITION FOR MY BARS? Handlebar height is crucial for comfort. Athletic riders usually prefer to ride stretched out and aero with handlebars below saddle height. Bear in mind that this ‘correct’ riding position is not an ideal for everyone. If you haven’t trained yourself to ride in the classic flat-back position, you will probably feel more comfortable sitting more upright. Higher bars can reduce the weight and hence the pressure on your wrists. Riding with your back at a 45˚ angle, or higher, rather than at zero degrees can relieve lower back pain and/or neck strain. Handlebar reach is also an issue. Stretching too far to the bars locks out the arms so you’ll feel every bump. Too short a reach can feel constricting. The solution to all these ailments is often a simple matter of changing the stem to achieve a longer, shorter, higher or lower reach. Most of us have been through this stemswapping process with our own bikes. If you think you might benefit from a change in riding position, pop round to any of our shops with your bike and we will be delighted to advise you on its setup.

I WANT TO UPGRADE MY GEARS. WHICH ARE BEST? Today, you have so many gear systems to choose from. Shimano, Campagnolo or SRAM? 7, 8, 9, 10 or 11-speed cassette? A compact double 50/34t, a race double 53/39 or a triple 50/39/30 chainset? Electric or mechanical shifting. Even more than the frame, the transmission can be the most expensive part of a decent road bike, so bear in mind its potential for future upgrading when choosing a new bike. For instance, as well as being an excellent gear system for bikes around £1,000, one of the benefits of Shimano Tiagra is that it is a 10-speed system. This means that when, say, a gear mech wears out it can be upgraded with an even better made, lighter weight Shimano 105, Ultegra or Dura-Ace 10-speed derailleur. Same goes for SRAM Apex 10-speed parts, which can be upgraded all the way up to SRAM Red pro level. If your bike has an 8 or 9 speed system, there are far fewer options for upgrading. Today, electronic shifting dominates the pro peloton because it really does live up to Shimano’s claim: ‘just a light touch, as soft as a mouse click, is sufficient for the front or rear derailleur to instantaneously select the correct gear’. Comparing all these systems is extremely subjective. The cognoscenti advise, ‘Shimano is smoother,’ or ‘Campag lasts longer,’ or ‘SRAM Double Tap single lever shifters are simpler’. We say, pop into one of our shops for a test ride, or three, and discover for yourself which system suits you best.

CAN YOU RECOMMEND A BETTER BAR?

ARE THERE ANY BENEFITS TO UPGRADING MY WHEELS?

If there’s one thing most of our shop staff love talking about, it’s bars. Many of them are equally happy to discuss handlebars. First thing to check is handlebar width. A good place to start is a handlebar that’s around the same width as your shoulders. You can check this on your bike by sitting on your saddle and placing your hands on the brake hoods. If your arms stretch straight forward, you’re probably bang on. If your hands are closer together, that can be constricting. If your arms are spread-eagled, that can be a strain, especially on longer rides. The next thing to consider with road bars is their ‘drop’. That’s the distance between the top of the bars and the bottom. Too much of a difference can be challenging for smaller riders. Too little can be frustrating for bigger riders. Women especially are often saddled with bars that are too wide and have too deep a drop. That’s why we captioned this article with Specialized’s latest women’s shallow drop bar, which comes in 36 and 38mm widths. (Men’s bar widths are usually 40, 42, 44 or 46cm).

FULCRUM RACING 5 WHEELSET £199.99 (RRP £229.99) Web Ref: 14871

Whether you’re looking for a noticeable improvement in acceleration or to make serious weight savings, consider one of the ‘system wheelsets’ on offer from Shimano, Mavic or Fulcrum. Compared with traditional wheel design where, say, Mavic produces a rim that has to work with a vast array of hubs and spokes, a system wheel builder has complete control of every element that goes into the creation of a quality wheel - lacing pattern, spoke thickness, spoke count, spoke tension, rim width.... A system wheel also integrates the drilling patterns of both hub and rim with the thickness and bend of the spokes. With each spoke nestled perfectly in place, there’s less stress on the spoke holes. Designing the rear wheel from scratch enables offset spoke lacing patterns that minimise dishing. The happy result is a rear wheel that is stronger and stiffer, and therefore more immune to the lateral flex that can rob your speed whenever you climb or accelerate. Factor in economies of scale, and system wheels can be beyond hand -built in quality, yet cost no more than traditional wheels built with similar quality components.

‘Eddy Merckx is to cycling what Muhammad Ali is to boxing or Pelé to football: quite simply the best there has ever been.’ So began Guardian journalist William Fotheringham’s fine biography, Half Man Half Bike. When Eddy Merckx entered his first Tour de France in 1969 he won it. That’s impressive. Better still, he didn’t just take the yellow jersey. He won every prize possible - most aggressive rider, team, combination, points and king of the mountains. In the Tour’s 110 year history no other rider has achieved this grand slam. It was the manner of his winning that set Merckx apart. Cycling fans of the day still recall Stage 17 of the ‘69 Tour with awe. This 214.5K stage to Mourenx takes in the classic quartet of Pyrenean cols: Aspin, Peyresourde, Tourmalet and Aubisque. Eddy was already in yellow with a comfortable 8.3 minute lead. Rather than conserve his energy and control the peloton in the manner of his successors, he slipped into a higher gear and attacked on the Tourmalet. With 145 kilometres still to go. By the end of the stage his closet rival was almost 18 minutes behind. He didn’t just defeat his fellow riders. He devoured them, hence the nickname The Cannibal. If you’re wondering how relevant Eddy Merckx remains to road cyclists today, just Google his name and check the pics. The sideburns are positively Bradley-esque.

WHAT BIKE GOT YOU INTERESTED IN CYCLING AND WHAT WAS IT LIKE? My first race bike was a steel second hand bike I got from my parents. I saved money by helping our local creamery to buy my first bike myself. WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL BE THE NEXT BIG THING IN CYCLING? New composite materials.

Stocking Eddy Merckx Cycles emboldened us to approach the great man with a few questions, which he responded to with practised grace and honesty. IF YOU COULD RIDE ANY RACE AGAIN WHICH ONE AND WHY? Tour de France without any doubt. It’s the biggest and most important race in cycling. PHOTOS FROM THE ‘60s SHOW YOU RIDING IN WOOL JERSEYS. DO YOU STILL RIDE IN WOOL OR DO YOU PREFER MODERN SYNTHETICS? Modern clothing that absorb your sweat. Wool is getting too heavy in the rain. IF YOU COULD GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF ANY ADVICE WHAT WOULD IT BE? I wouldn’t do anything different. I also didn’t race too much. I did it step by step.

ARE YOU A FAN OF PUSHING THE LIMITS OF TECHNOLOGY OR ARE YOU MORE OF A TRADITIONALIST? I always want to try new things. I want to keep innovating. IF YOU WERE 25 YEARS OLD AND RACING TODAY AND COULD SELECT ANY BIKE, WHICH FRAME MATERIAL WOULD YOU CHOOSE? CARBON, STEEL, ALUMINIUM, TITANIUM....? Carbon, without any doubt. WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO RIDE? WHAT SORT OF TERRAIN, SPEED AND DISTANCE? DO YOU WEAR A HELMET? No hills anymore for me please! I love flat rides of 60 to 70km. And I always wear a helmet even if it’s hot. Safety is very important on a bike. SHIMANO, CAMPAG OR SRAM? I’m a Campag man but I have bikes with Campag and Shimano. But during my career I’ve always had Campag so....

GOING FORWARD While it’s easy to look back on Merckx’s heyday as a golden era, a glance at the cycling equipment to the right illustrates how much cycling equipment has progressed since the 1970s. Take legwear. Today’s best cycling shorts boast a chamois that is machine washable. It stretches to prevent bunching. It’s cushioned only where required. This synthetic chamois is going to be more comfortable and probably more hygienic than the most deluxe goatskin chamois. Or take sunglasses. Bulletproof Oakleys have been seen as a necessity since Eddy’s successor, Greg Lemond, championed them in the 1980s (and not just because of that hunting accident).

ETXEONDO HARTU SHORTS £64.99

SPECIALIZED COMP ROAD SHOE £119.99

SPECIALIZED TOUPÉ PRO SADDLE £119.99

Power Lycra shorts with a frictionminimising stretch chamois are your best assurance of being spared the saddle sores that bedevilled Eddy’s generation.

From its Boa dial for on-the-fly tensioning to its knee-aligning BG orthotic insole, you can see why BGs are the most frequently spotted shoes in today’s pro peloton.

Carbon rails and shell: this latest version of the Toupé builds upon the original which Cycling Weekly described in 2007 as ‘the best saddle currently on the market’.

The Pavé’s cotton/Kevlar construction and its 320tpi casing deliver a quality of ride that would have been the preserve of silk tubulars in Eddy’s era.

LOOKING BACK While we love innovation, it’s part of the charm of cycling that classic equipment keeps reinventing itself. One cyclist might go by in a Merckx-era Team Faema cotton cap. The next is sporting a similar style 2013vintage Endura Equipe cap. Just writing this today (30/1/13) we were alerted to a letter in the Herald newspaper where the author praised the qualities of a string vest he had bought from us 20 years ago. If the letter writer ever requires a new vest we assure him that Sportful offers a fitting replacement.

If you’re an all-season rider à la Merckx, consider these Oakleys, which make it easy to switch lenses from Black for bright days to Persimmon for low light.

MOUNTAIN BIKES INTRODUCTION There’s something special about mountain biking in the summertime when the weather is fine. The singletrack is half-baked. So are your fun-loving riding mates. It’s warm enough to go out in just a short-sleeve top and a pair of shorts. Just an afternoon out on the trails can re-create and replenish like a good holiday. We’ve been pedalling mountain bikes and MTB equipment since the 1980s - same as the major bicycle companies - Specialized, Giant, GT and Cannondale. You can be confident that even the entry level MTBs featured here will be trail worthy and guaranteed to make you smile. This is our commitment to helping you make the most of a sport that can be as elegant and balletic and/ or as filthy and silly as you want to make it. See you on the trails.

1.6KG - PROBABLY THE BEST FRAME FOR THE MONEY

BETTER BRAKES, BETTER WHEELS, BETTER GEARS

HYDRAULIC DISC-EQUIPPED MTBs START HERE

The Hardrock has been our benchmark entry-level MTB since 1988. Its lightweight frame makes for a manoeuvrable bike that’s easier to ride. Its components are basic but sound. The alloy double-wall wheel rims are machined for optimal V-brake performance. Shimano Tourney 3x7 EZ Fire shifters and derailleurs and the 42/34/24 chainset and 14-34 freewheel give you the gears to get you around your local trail centre.

Tektro disc brakes overcome the major downside of rim brakes - rapid pad wear and eventual rim wear. Upgrading to a Hardrock with discs helps guarantee more consistent brake performance that requires less maintenance. The gearing is also upgraded to Shimano Altus 3x8 with an 11-34 cassette for a wider range of gears and a cassette hub for a stronger rear wheel.

Being the world’s largest bike manufacturer gives Giant the clout to produce an AluxX frame that matches the Hardrock’s in quality. The Revel’s disc brakes are upgraded to Tektro HDC300 level. Their hydraulic lines overcome the weak link of any mechanical brake system - cables that will stretch and eventually corrode and fray.

LARGER WHEELS: LOWER PRICE

SKINNY SAVE SEAT STAYS SAVE WEIGHT

With its signature triple triangle frame, a GT is one mountain bike you can always tell at a glance. The frame is hydroformed aluminium, (like the Giant’s). With its SunTour XCM 100mm fork with lockout, Shimano Alivio 3x9 gearing and Tektro HDC hydraulic disc brakes, GT matches the spec of anything out there at this price.

Just last year, Specialized’s 29er offer started with the £1,000 Carve Comp. This 2013 Hardrock makes the benefits of bigger wheels twice as affordable. 29x2” tyres offer more traction and more cushioning with the result that the bike can float over obstacles that might hinder smaller wheels. Higher speeds demand better brakes, so Specialized have spec’d hydraulic discs here.

The Trail SL5 is our lightest weight MTB around this price. The frame’s unique, skinny SAVE (Synapse Active Vibration Elimination) stays help damp shock whenever the back wheel hits an obstacle. Unlike other MTB shock absorbers, SAVE stays save weight. The Trail SL5 with cable disc brakes was one of our best selling MTBs in 2012. This year’s upgrade to hydraulic brakes makes for an even better bike for the trails.

The butted steel frame’s long top tube and slack 69˚ head angle invite you to ride fast, as do the Continental 29x2.3” tyres and the confidence-inspiring Shimano M596 disc brakes. Alfine 11 is Shimano’s best ever hub gear system. Alfine 11 offers a wider gear range (409% difference between top and

bottom gear) than Shimano’s previous best Alfine 8 (306%). That’s equivalent of an 11-45 cassette - wide enough for most riders on all but the most extreme terrain. Enclosing the gear change mechanism in an oil-bath environment inside the hub creates a much lower maintenance system, better protected from the elements.

The Giant Trance X3 is one of the least expensive trail-worthy full suspension mountain bikes money can buy. Trail-worthy means that, at around 14kg, it’s light enough to get you to the top of the hill. Trail-worthy also means that its AluxX SL aluminium frame with Maestro 120mmtravel suspension will be built with strength and integrity so you and the bike reach the bottom of the hill, smiling and intact.

With its new 4-bar version of their Quad suspension, Whyte’s debut full sus 29er matches the grip, control and agility that has made their trail bikes legendary. The T129 has even shorter chain stays than Whyte’s benchmark 26”-wheel 146. This tight rear triangle helps keep the rear suspension fully active when required, firm when not. WOMEN’S MOUNTAIN BIKES There are so many reasons to love mountain biking. Enjoying the countryside in a motor traffic-free environment, the flow, the joy of discovering a new section of singletrack, learning new skills, having a laugh, wind in your face, the post ride scran.... Mountain biking is a legal high, healthy as a shot of beetroot juice. Enjoying mountain biking begins with getting a bike that fits. Hence our carefully selected range of women’s mountain bikes starting with Specialized’s world renowned Myka range, progressing up to Giant’s full suspension Trance. Comfort on the trails isn’t just about the bike. Seam-free cushioned shorts and gloves that radically improve grip are well worth considering. Same goes for a rucsac that moulds to your back. Remember too that mountain biking and mud are not strangers to one another, so you will quickly discover why feminine-fit shades aren’t just for sunny days.

MYKA specialized MYKA SPORT DISC £499.99 Sizes: 15, 17, 19”. Colour: Blackberry/Fuschia. Weight: 14.7kg. Web Ref: 15298

specialized MYKA 26 £349.99 Sizes: 13, 15, 17, 19”. Colour: Blue/White. Weight: 13.6kg. Web Ref: 15312

Having made wonderful women’s MTBs since the late ‘80s, Specialized’s unrivalled experience shines through in the design of their Mykas. Their lower-slung frames maximise step-over clearance, hence rider confidence. A Myka’s compact frame brings the bars within easier reach - something you’ll appreciate if you’ve ever found yourself over-stretching to reach the bars. Femalefriendly contact points, such as women’s versions of Specialized’s clinically-proven Body Geometry Saddle and Handlebar Grips, demonstrate Specialized’s attention to your needs. Other details are less apparent but equally important such as insisting on

suspension forks with softer spring rates, appropriate to lighter weight riders. As with any Specialized bike, even the least expensive Myka is a sound bicycle. Crucially, every Myka is built with the same quality of A1 Premium aluminium frame whose perfect weight distribution delivers such a balanced ride. The Myka 26 has 26” wheels, V-brakes and 3x7 gears. The Myka Disc 26 has 26” wheels, mechanical disc brakes and 3x8 gears. The Myka Sport Disc has fasterrolling 29” wheels and automobile-like hydraulic disc brakes. The Myka Elite is also a 29er, this time with an upgraded Shimano Acera/Alivio 3x9 transmission.

Please Note: Women’s bike design is based upon the observation that the average female is 6” smaller, with a proportionately shorter upper body, than the average guy. Naturally, we’re not all ‘average’ so a significant number (15-20%) of females get on better with unisex bikes.

WHYTE’S WONDERFUL WOMEN’S BIKE DEBUT

A FOX AIR-CUSHIONED TRANCE-LIKE RIDE

The Trail SL4 is 1 to 3 pounds lighter than every other women’s MTB on this double page spread, thanks to its Optimised 6061 Alloy SAVE frame. Cannondale clearly know how to optimise every inch of this SAVE (Synapse Active Vibration Elimination) frame to reduce weight and ensure comfort. The Trail SL4’s hydraulic disc brakes, SunTour 100mm-travel LO forks and Shimano 3x9 gears realise this elite frame’s potential.

Whyte has been our fastest growing MTB brand over the past 3 years. When they released this - their first women’s hardtail (like a Whyte 801 with a shorter, lower top tube) - we thought this was this year’s best news for female mountain bikers. We think you’ll agree too when you experience the 802’s frame design, dialed for UK trails, its real RockShox forks, its Shimano 3x9 gears and its Tektro hydraulic disc brakes.

Riding rocky downhills transmits shock that can give your body a pummelling. No wonder MTBs sans suspension are called hardtails. Ride the same downhill on this 125mm-travel full suspension bike and the only physical stress you might suffer is the effort to suppress your grin. This bike stands out for its Fox Float suspension front and rear, featuring Fox’s truly useful CTD (climb, trail, descent) easy-click adjustment dial.

ONE-TIME Bike co-op MEMBer steve Kerr goes back to mountain biking’s roots and rides the west highland way in ONE day!

I

recently turned 40 and was trying to think of a way of challenging myself (and those who think that 40 is old) and came up with riding the West Highland Way in a day. At that point I had no idea if it was even possible but as I had already started telling people I was going to do it I thought I had better do a bit of research. I found a couple of blogs from others who had taken the challenge and thought that it was doable and believe it or not I found a few others who were happy enough to take it on with me. In the end seven of us set off on a ride that took 15 hours to complete and pushed some of us to the limit mentally and physically at times. I had turned the ride into a fundraiser for SARDA in memory of a friend so opted to ride up the West side of Loch Lomond on the cycle path as I have heard horror stories about the length of time it can take on the East side and was willing to put aside my usual purist tendencies for the sake of the ride being completed in the daylight hours that were available to us.

It had rained very heavily between Tarbet and Inverarnan so we were all a bit apprehensive about the weather and how it would affect the rest of the ride. The next stage was an easy ride through some amazing countryside to Tyndrum where we stopped for a real break and some well-deserved lunch. Beyond Tyndrum the real scenery starts and so do the climbs and after a fairly steady climb up to Bridge of Orchy there is a lung buster that climbs around a hill before you drop back down to Victoria Bridge, then follows the slog up Wades

It has to be one of the best descents that Scotland has to offer (as long as you like pointy rocks). The rock gave way to a fire road blast into Kinlochleven and our last appointment with the chuck wagon. This rendezvous was as short as we could make it as the midges were so thick you left a shape in the air as you walked through them, and they were as hungry as us! Then followed the ride/push out of Kinlochleven, up and over the valley side, and the inland run across to Fort William. This section was on Landy tracks and singletrack and although the gradients were much easier than the rest of the day it felt like a long section as by now all of us were getting tired. Then at last as the light was fading we dropped down the fire road for the last blast into Fort William. A tired but happy bunch of bikers.

“THIS FOR ME IS WHAT MOUNTAIN BIKING IS ALL ABOUT”

We set off from Dumbarton at 5:45 as soon as it was light and started the tarmac blast up to Inverarnan which took us through to 9ish where we changed tyres for the WHW on to Fort William.

56

Road and the descent into Glen Coe where we had another appointment with our cheerleaders who kept us topped up with High5 and snacks. The ride into Glen Coe had knocked the wind out of a few of us and after the rain of the morning it was turning into a sweltering afternoon so the thought of the two big climbs ahead of us was sobering. The climb up the Devil’s Staircase was hard work but the thought of the descent into Kinlochleven on the other side had us all buzzing and deservedly so.

As much as I enjoy riding trail centres, this for me is what mountain biking is all about. Not just beating the same trail around a manicured forest but actually getting into the wilds of the amazing scenery that we in Scotland are blessed with. Get out there and challenge yourself and it, you’ll feel better for it I promise.

EARLY RIDER JUNO £68.99

EARLY RIDER BELTER 16 £229.99

A SAFER INTRO TO THE BALANCING ACT THAT IS BICYCLING

BELT DRIVE MAKES BELTER DEMONSTRABLY BETTER

It might be the least expensive, but Juno is definitely the most cute and possibly the most revolutionary riding machine in this catalogue. This spherovelo is made for scooting along on - rather like the balance bikes that Early Rider pioneered - except here, it rolls on balls rather than wheels. This makes Juno an incredibly stable and confidence-inspiring first ride for kids, learning to develop their sense of balance.

The Belter’s chain-less Gates Carbon Belt Drive and its sealed cartridge bearing wheels are the kind of equipment usually reserved for £1,000 adult bikes. A mere 5.9kg (3kg+ less than our previous lightest weight 16” wheeler) the Belter is testament to Early Rider’s commitment to making cycling safer, more fun and more accessible from the earliest age.

IS YOUR CHILD THE NEXT BRADLEY WIGGINS?

Since the 1990s our major suppliers’ children’s bicycle ranges have almost always been children’s mountain bike ranges. Hats off then to Birmingham-based Dawes for being the first company to introduce a coherent range of drop bar bikes for younger riders. What has really impressed us about Dawes’ junior range has been the quality on show here. Aluminium alloy frames on every road bike. Heck, you even get STI Dual Control gear shifting on 2 of these models.

handed. The cranks are also proportionally shorter for younger riders, as is the width of the drop bars. These handlebars sport Shimano’s nifty new A050 shifter to click through the 7-speed gears your young ‘un might require to conquer local cols.

STI means Shimano Total Integration. The gear shifters are integrated with the brake levers. Nudge the RH shifter inwards to shift the chain up the 7 rear cogs. Press the lever’s thumb button to return the chain to a smaller cog. The LH shifter uses the same action to move the chain between the 2 chainrings. All this magic comes courtesy of Shimano’s new A070 shift levers - RRP £100. Not bad for a kids’ bike!

Your child will also appreciated the fitted kickstand that makes it easier to park the Lil Duchess almost anywhere. A bicycle truly is a gift that has the power to keep on giving. There are few activities more confidence building and life enhancing than the development of cycling skills. DAWES ESPOIR JNR £429.99 ASPIRE TO A MORE VERSATILE ROAD BIKE

The Dawes Espoir is a perfectly proportioned bike, destined to fuel a young rider’s varied aspirations. The alloy frame has bosses for cantilever brakes and extra clearance for wider tyres (24x1.5” or 26x1.2” over the Dawes Giro 300’s 24x1 or 26x1” tyres). This makes the Espoir Jnr as fit for cyclo-cross as it is for road racing. Its STI 2x8 shifters and Altus rear mech take the gearing up a notch to Shimano 2300 level.

orn in Scotland. Ridden around the World. That’s Endura’s slogan and it’s a pretty good one. Cycle clothing that has been tested to endure the Scottish climate is going to work just about anywhere on Earth. Informed design, consistent good value and made to last, Endura clothing has been a mainstay of our range for the past 20 years. A few years ago Endura took the bold step of sponsoring their own road racing team. In terms of shrewd business sense, some viewed this venture as akin to buying a football club. In Scotland. Sponsoring their

own team, however, gave Endura the impetus to develop their even higher-end range of Equipe clothing. Every Equipe garment is made to the highest spec and tolerances, based upon input from their own pro riders. When Team Endura won the 2012 Tour of Britain, their ambition was vindicated. It put Endura on the map as a global brand, now sought after by riders around the world. For 2013, Endura continue to diversify with the launch of their MTR (Mountain Racing) and helmet ranges which bring Equipe-like quality to MTB & recreation riders.

A training programme you can wear The Equipe range is extensively developed and tested by the Endura Racing UCI Continental-Licensed Professional Cycle Team.

amed after the Basque village which housed their first workshop, Etxeondo is as synonymous with Spanish cycling as Pedro Delgado, Miguel Indurain and Alberto Contador. Each of those champions chose to ride in Etxeondo clothing - as have a host of riders from more northern climes such as Sean Kelly. To ensure consistent high quality, all their clothing is still manufactured in Etxeondo’s own Spanish workshops. The standout features of every Etxeondo garment is its exceptional stretch and how extraordinarily soft and pleasant it feels against the skin. The benefit of such profound stretch is that the shorts or top expand and contract in tandem with your muscles without complaint - the key to constriction-free comfort in the saddle whether you’re Big Mig or just an ordinary Joe. The great thing about gilets is that they provide that crucial wind-cheating top layer you require for downhills, yet they’re so minimal and non-restrictive, you barely know they’re wearing one on hot climbs. Especially when it boasts a cooling Coldblack rear panel, and it’s as feather lightweight as this one.

Looking for a cycling jersey that’s truly road race proven? The Equipe’s CoolMax fabric feels dry and smooth against the skin, even on all-day rides. Its full length zip enables cooling-off periods. Equipe’s athletic fit means most riders ‘size up’. Raw edge silicone sleeve grippers highlight its streamlined fit.

HELMETS

T

he Specialized Align helmet and its sister, Sierra, are our best selling helmets. We believe their popularity is well deserved. They share features that Specialized reserved, just a few years ago, for their 3-figure S-Works pro-level lids, such as their HeadSet fit system and 4th Dimension air conditioning. No other bike company offers this level of helmet technology on such a modestly priced cranium cradle. This begs the question, why spend more for a helmet? Two reasons: even better fit and superior cooling. Being manufactured in 2 or 3 sizes rather than one, the £50+ helmet usually offers a more precise fit. Advanced reinforcement, best illustrated by the Giro Aeon’s SL Roll Cage, enables so much venting, it feels like you’re riding bare headed.

More rear coverage maximises safety. 4th Dimension Cooling System pulls air in through the Mega Mouthport and out through the rear Exhaust Ports. The HeadSet SX fit belt’s micro - adjustable speed dial makes helmet set-up a breeze. It’s easy to see why Specialized’s Align and Sierra are our top selling helmets.

HELMETS TO CHOOSE FROM AT EDINBURGHBICYCLE.COM

ROAD MULTIPURPOSE The Giro Indicator is the epitome of multipurpose helmets. It’s suitable for any type of riding, road or off road, commuting or touring. It shares high-end Giro helmet features such as in-mould construction and good airflow. Its key virtue is Giro’s genius for offering a good fit. An alternative multipurpose helmet could be a skate-style lid such as the TSG Evolution. Hardshell integrity and street -savvy looks transcend its BMX / trails / trials heritage.

giro indicator £39.99

tsg evolution graphic £39.99

The Giro Indicator’s In-mould construction makes the helmet more durable than one with a taped-on microshell. Its 20 vents help you keep your cool. Its visor helps keep glare off the eyes, and raindrops off your glasses. Its adjustable Acu-Dial fit belt hugs the nape and helps deliver Giro’s trademark excellent fit

The TSG Evolution might be less vented than a regular bike lid but, for many, its cooler looks make it more wearable. Its ABS hardshell + EPS shell-construction can survive whacks and abrasions better than a regular helmet with a microshell cover bonded to the EPS shell. Padded side panels offer ear and temple protection, yet barely compromise hearing.

Road lids feature ‘high-speed slots’ - the vents tend to be longer and narrower than you’ll find on an MTB helmet. High speed slots suck in more air when you pick up speed. The road helmet is also noticeably taller at the back. This design encourages the air to flow faster over your head to escape out the back. If you’ve been used to a multipurpose lid, you’ll be amazed how much cooler a road race helmet can be. You’ll especially appreciate this difference in warm weather. When it’s cold, you can always line it with a Buff bandana.

MOUNTAIN Obviously, any cycling helmet will perform its primary function of absorbing impact, so can be used for any type of cycling. However, many of today’s helmets are optimised for a specific type of riding. An MTB trail lid offers more rear coverage than a road helmet. It has wider slots to help keep your head cooler on those sweaty slow-speed climbs that characterise trail riding. Finally, an MTB lid’s visor helps fend off glare, branches and general trail splatter.

specialized tactic £54.99

sixsixone recon stealth £69.99

giro athlon £99.99

Upgraded for 2013, the Tactic boasts a lighter weight Headset SL retention system with four height adjustment options. Its Tri-fix strap system no longer has below-ear adjusters, making these straps less susceptible to loosening. It’s new visor blends seamlessly with the helmet. Its aFix attachment system makes the visor easier to remove.

‘The deep rear end of the Recon marks it out as a full-protection trail helmet, done in a low-profile, attractive fashion that makes it wearable for a fast XC blast. The inner shape is quite round and can feel loose until you tighten the rear buckle, at which point it feels good – bolted on, even. The liner pads are very comfortable. 4.5/5’ What MountainBike.

Giro are famed for their Super Fit Engineering, designed to help ensure their helmets deliver a custom fit to 98% of the population. This 23-vent trail lid boasts the same 5th generation RocLoc5 fitting system as the £200 Giro Aeon, below, to ensure a snug, comfortable fit. Its patented POV visor’s 15˚ adjustability guarantees a clear Point Of View.

GIRO SAVANT | SONNET £59.99

CATLIKE WHISPER DELUXE £99.99

GIRO AEON £199.99

A Savant is a sage or a person of great learning. It certainly is an act of wisdom to invest in such a lightweight, well-ventilated helmet with RocLoc5 retention.

The Catlike Whisper has been proven in the heat of competition. Its distinctive 39 hole design makes it a helmet that’s always recognised in the pro peloton on the likes of Spain’s team Movistar. ‘Deluxe’ means this lid has been upgraded with a more comfortable rear retention device, yet it costs £65 less than it did last year.

The Aeon’s Thermoformed SL Roll Cage (the red ‘skeleton’ beneath its black ‘ribs’) bestows the integrity required to make such a well ventilated helmet safe. Being ‘more air than helmet’, the Aeon is the lightest lid on this double page spread, weighing just 230g (size large) in a world where 300g-plus helmets are the norm, and 260g lids are rated ‘super light’.

ROAD BIKE SHOES

MOUNTAIN BIKE SHOES

MULTI PURPOSE SHOES

You can tell a road shoe from its inflexible sole. This proven design maximises power output whilst isolating your foot from pedal pressure. A road shoe is designed to take a bolt-on Shimano SPD-SL or Look-style cleat, which binds the shoe to the pedal and thus enables the most positive nonslip interface between you and your bike.

Specialized and Shimano MTB shoes on this page take 2-bolt SPD cleats. This smaller cleat is bolted into a recess in the sole, so it doesn’t rule out walking, as is the case with a road shoe with its larger 3-bolt cleat on the outside of the sole. If you prefer not to ride clipped in, 5Ten and Teva’s super-tacky soles stick amazingly well to flat pedals.

Whilst the bicycle industry love to label equipment, ‘mountain or ‘road’, cyclists are an anarchic tribe that follow their own rules. If you commute or tour or train, you might opt for MTB shoes that you can walk in. However, if you keep a change of clothing at your destination, you might prefer to get there in zero-compromise road shoes.

ALL TERRAIN

5TEN FREERIDER DANNY MACASKILL £94.99 This special edition of the 5Ten Freerider was designed for, and with input from local hero, Danny MacAskill. If you have seen his videos, you’ll understand Danny’s need for a shoe that remains planted on the sweet spot of the pedal. (If you haven’t seen the videos, go straight to YouTube). 5Ten shoes are famed for their amazing Stealth soles, which grip flat MTB/BMX pedals that lesser soles would slip off. Danny-inspired upgrades include the harder bash-repellent heel and toe, and the more absorbent insoles to cushion those 15 metre landings.

Sizes: 7-11. Colour: Red/Black. Weight: 1,036g. Web Ref: 15886

TEVA LINKS £89.99

SHIMANO M064 ATB £59.99

SPECIALIZED BG COMP MTB £99.99

SPECIALIZED BG RIME £139.99

Just as 5Ten went to Danny Mac, Teva worked with Giant’s pro freerider Jeff Lenosky to develop a better MTB shoe. The sole is made to mould to a flattie pedal when you ride. It also grips really well when you have to hoof it. Ion-mask technology prevents the uppers absorbing water. Cushioned insoles make Links as comfortable to wear as Teva’s famous flip flops.

The picture of the Shimano M064’s sole tells you what these shoes are all about. There’s the recess for bolting in the cleat which will lock your foot in the most efficient pedalling position. The fibreglass plate makes the ‘pedal stomping zone’ more rigid. The more flexible area under the toes facilitates off -bike hikes, as do the lugs & studs. The 2 wide Velcro straps make for fast-fitting, lace-free security.

‘BG’ means this shoe boasts a Body Geometry orthotic insole, clinically proven to enhance pedalling efficiency and comfort. This BG footbed’s Varus Wedge subtly corrects the foot’s position on the pedal to promote optimal knee and the foot alignment. Its Metatarsal Button helps eliminate hot spots. The main strap’s M-lock SL buckle makes it simple to fine-tune its excellent fit.

The BG Rime boasts a high-traction sole from Vibram - the hiking boot specialist. It also comes with a new more dirt-proof S2 version of Specialized’s Boa strap tensioner. Simply turning the BOA dial evenly tensions the thin cables that run like laces throughout the length of the shoe. This system distributes pressure evenly, and offers the simplest on-the-fly tension adjustability.

TOURING

SPECIALIZED BG SPORT TOURING £69.99 Specialized’s BG Sport Touring Shoe falls very much into the ‘multi purpose’ category. Its SlipNot sole is stiffer than you’ll find on most trainer-style cycling shoes, but it’s easier to walk in than a pure road race shoe. For many riders, be it for sportives, commuting or, indeed, touring, the Specialized BG Sport Touring Shoe is a very happy medium. To sum up, this is a handsome pair of mostly black cycling shoes that are also fine for short walks.

CLEATS COME SUPPLIED WITH PEDALS, NOT WITH SHOES

TRIATHLON

SPECIALIZED TRIVENT SPORT £79.99 Triathletes hang their bikes on the transition zone rack with their shoes already clipped to their SPD-SL-style pedals. Specialized facilitate this seconds-saving tactic with this tri-dedicated shoe. The Trivent Sport’s Launch Clip holds the shoe vertical to hasten snapping your cleats into the pedal. The heel pull is so oversized you can’t fail to grab it. The extra wide top strap makes for instant foot entry and exit. Its mesh upper and its open tongue help the feet dry off faster, post swim. Its BG insole gives it the edge over any other shoe that tries to compete.

ROAD

SHIMANO R064 ROAD £59.99

SIDI LOGO VERNICE £154.99

SIDI GENIUS 5 FIT £189.99

SPECIALIZED PRO ROAD £189.99

The faux leather and mesh uppers are fast drying. The fibreglass reinforced soles take either 2-bolt SPD or 3-bolt Shimano SPD-SL / Look cleats. The Velcro strap closures are as simple as they are safe. (An absence of laces makes sense on a bike shoe.) Light weight and stripped to the essentials, these shoes fittingly share the attributes you look for in a good road bike.

Vernice is a supple microfibre synthetic leather. Its smooth dirt-shedding surface makes it the perfect shoe upper material. The carbon-reinforced Millennium 3 sole is super stiff and durable. One glance at these shoes and you can instantly appreciate their chic Italian styling. Continuing to build on their heritage as an iconic Italian cycling brand, Sidi is one logo you won’t mind sporting.

The Genius 5 Fit shares the Sidi Logo’s Millennium 3 sole and Vernice upper. Then improves on it with a Soft Instep 2 closure. The top strap is anatomically shaped and padded to minimise pressure on the foot arch on the up stroke. Its Calliper Buckle is micro-adjustable on the fly, so you can tension the strap prior to sprints, then loosen it off half a click at a time for measured release.

This is the first BG road shoe in the Specialized hierarchy with a Torsion Box Technology carbon sole. Borrowing from high-end carbon ski manufacture, a Torsion Box sole is hollowed out and filled with more or less material depending on shoe size. Torsion Box Technology thus enables Specialized to guarantee their size 48 Pro sole is as stiff as the size 41 with minimal weight penalty.

MAINTENANCE

R

iding a bike is a lifestyle choice that expresses an aspiration to enjoy a happier and more independent existence. Looking after your bike is a natural part of this self-reliant vibe. An hour spent checking and cleaning the bike on a Saturday morning repays itself with a faster, smoother ride that afternoon. Summer jaunts will be all the sweeter if your tyres are at optimal pressure so they’ll roll with minimal resistance. Your gear mechs will do their derailing so much slicker if the chain is clean and lubed. Your brakes will inspire confidence if the cables are properly tensioned (if you still have brakes with bowden cables). Having said that, we never preach, we only advise. If you don’t have the time, skill, space or inclination to do it yourself, please skip to the next page, and we’ll happily do it for you.

FREE SAFETY CHECK

Every Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op shop has its own Service Centre. If you need a repair, service, upgrade or something fitted, simply wheel your bike in (though advance booking is always recommended). No job too big, no job too small. Good, honest, professional service guaranteed.

A trained mechanic will give your bike a free safety inspection, paying particular attention to the brakes, transmission, tyres, wheels and steering. We will then recommend the work required to make the bike good and give you an accurate estimate of the job’s expected cost.

As Standard Service +

BASIC SERVICE £35 This one-hour checkover might be all a lightly-used bicycle requires. • Check and adjust brakes and gears. • Check and inflate tyres.

STANDARD SERVICE £50 The Standard Service covers every externallyadjustable moving part of the bike, so it is much more thorough than a Basic Service. Plus the bike is test ridden, so we can confidently back up our Standard Service with a 6 month guarantee that covers all the work carried out on your bicycle. As Basic Service + • Check and externally adjust hubs, headset and bottom bracket. • Replace brake blocks/pads (if required). • Lubricate cables (replace if required). • Lubricate chain and derailleurs. • Check/tighten all nuts and bolts. • Test ride. • 6 month guarantee on all work carried out.

DELUXE SERVICE £90 To make this service truly deluxe, we strip your bike down to the bare frame. Every part is carefully checked over before it is refitted. Serviceable bearings are regreased. New cables, bearings and brake pads are fitted if required. The drivetrain is thoroughly cleaned. If you ride every day, or you’re contemplating a big ride, or you want your bike to work better than new, we recommend you treat your bike to a Deluxe Service.

• Complete strip down and rebuild including headset, bottom bracket and hubs (excludes hydraulic brakes, suspension forks & shocks). • All threads cleaned and chased. • Wheels trued & tensioned.

SUNDRY SERVICES Remember, we will consider any individual job, big or small. Here are some of the most popular specific services we offer. • On-the-spot puncture repair: £6 + the price of the tube. • Drivetrain clean & lube: £15. • Rim brake service: £15. • Disc brake bleeding: £18 per brake (price includes brake fluid). • Chain or cassette fitting: £10. • Hub service: from £15. • Fork fitting: £30 (if the fork costs £200 or more and you purchase it from Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op we will fit it for free). • Wheel truing: from £12. • Wheel build: from £25. • Bike prep: unpacking, assembling & adjusting a boxed bike - for example, post flight: £40.

PARTS NOT INCLUDED IN QUOTED PRICES Please note: prices quoted on this page cover labour charges. An additional charge will be made for any parts fitted at the service, such as brake blocks, cables and bearings, unless otherwise stated (for instance, there is no charge for brake fluid when we bleed hydraulic disc brakes).
