A MESSAGE FROM Kevin Rea

President of Edgewood High School of the Sacred Heart

Dear Edgewood High School of the Sacred Heart community,

As you read this, you are holding in your hand a beautifully designed magazine aimed to showcase the Edgewood Experience and offering a new way to connect with and celebrate one another. Our shift from two shorter newsletters to one comprehensive annual magazine aims to deliver deeper storytelling and highlight impactful events and initiatives in a high quality publication.

Across these pages you will discover the myriad ways Edgewood High School of the Sacred Heart enhanced the student experience over the last year. I am excited by how these areas of growth reflect a reimagining of the founding vision of the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa. I am also proud of the impact Edgewood High School community members are making in one another’s lives and in the larger Madison community.

Connections are relationships in which a person, thing or idea are linked to or associated with something else. This new magazine, Edgewood Crusader Connection, weaves together stories of our past, present and future and strengthens the bonds of our entire Edgewood community.

As we celebrate the end of this year’s chapter we look forward to exciting future editions.

Thank you for your ongoing support and happy reading!

God Bless and Go Crusaders!

TRUTH . COMPASSION . JUSTICE . COMMUNITY . PARTNERSHIP

Students showed their spirit in a color splash at this year’s Homecoming Powder Puff football game.

We believe in the power of a UNITED COMMUNITY to shape the FUTURE.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of our Edgewood in the Community (EIC), a tradition that reflects our long-standing commitment to service. EIC Day represents a dedicated call to action — mobilizing students for a day of service to support the people and organizations of Dane County and the surrounding areas. Since our founding by the Catholic Dominican sisters of the Sinsinawa Congregation in 1881, our dedicated faculty and staff have inspired our students through our core values of Truth, Compassion, Justice, Community, and Partnership. These principles drive our commitment to serve the Madison community, its environs and the world. EHS is built on a foundation of Catholic service to the community. Each fall our entire student body, faculty and staff volunteer in service to our neighbors. This service day jump-starts students’ excitement for our mission and gives them an early opportunity to connect with work and organizations they may serve and lead in the future. While Edgewood in the Community is a single day event, the lessons learned and relationships created last throughout their time at Edgewood and become part of who they are.

Hours of service in one day!

The service oriented values and mindset instilled in their hearts are the core of everything our students do —

Catholic Faith — Catholic faith and Dominican values are a powerful framework to educate students from a variety of global faith traditions.

Community — Edgewood’s current enrollment of 623 students, drawn from over 25 middle schools around Madison and surrounding areas, is a testament to the power of a strong foundation, and our foundation is our strong community. Our students discover themselves here and go on to become leaders in Madison and throughout the world.

With community support, over 41% of our families receive more than $1M in needs-based financial assistance annually.

Educating the Whole Child — We provide multiple service opportunities that help our students develop a sense of who they are and who they want to become. This translates into highly motivated students who strive for more than simply a high academic GPA. They strive to be faith-filled, goal oriented and service minded. They develop championship mindsets where service to others comes first.

This year our students earned multiple accolades including five Edgewood students gaining distinction as National Merit Semifinalists. Others have earned awards as debaters, performers and state championship athletes.

As our students grow, our outstanding counseling team works closely with families not only to master the college process, but to help our students acquire the skills that help them flourish throughout their lives of service.

25 YEARS

“Thank you so much for letting us partner with you on another wonderful Edgewood in the Community day! The students were great and they were so helpful with putting our Children’s Kitchen Garden to bed.”

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

Maeve Shannahan

Class of 2022

A junior at Emory University, majoring in Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology, and minoring in Neuroethics, Maeve Shannahan has proven that the values she learned from her time at Edgewood High School: Truth, Compassion, Justice, Community and Partnership have an impact on not just her life, but on the lives of those she meets along the way.

As part of The Emory Global Perioperative Alliance, Maeve has traveled to Guatemala, where every summer a team of physicians and surgeons perform pro-bono surgeries on a military base in Huehuetenango. Each year, a team of physicians and undergraduate students collaborate to create educational health pamphlets to discuss with patients during triage. Many of the topics, however, were geared towards adolescents and adults, covering topics such as sexual and reproductive health, so in order to provide similar health information to the children who often spend much of the triage wait-time coloring, Maeve and her team crafted a book, which was published! The book is called “Un Día en Mi Vida: Un libro para colorear educativo con temas de salud para niños rurales guatemaltecos” which translates to: A Day in My Life: An educational coloring book with health themes for rural Guatemalan children. “We are extremely excited to bring this book on the clinical trip to Huehue in June!” says Shannahan and adds, “This year I am the undergraduate team lead so I’m in charge of the procurement of all the medical supplies and division of the workflow on and around the base. As undergrads we not only assist with checking patients in for care, but also build closed-top stoves to reduce COPD prevalence in the communities.

Maeve embodies the Sinsinawa Dominican values as she advocates for justice of those in need and shows compassion in her work while partnering with the local community in Guatemala. She truly is “Living the Mission” of Edgewood High School.

Aside from her work in Guatemala, Maeve also flew to Germany in April to present at the International Neuroethics Society Annual Conference. Her abstract is focused on ‘Automating Resource Allocation and Patient Autonomy in Addiction - Related Emergency Medical Services Cases.’ Finally, Maeve was one of 16 EMS leaders selected for the 2025 EMSNext Cohort. The award is through the American Ambulance Association.

If you would like to learn more about the work Maeve is doing, connect with her on: linkedin.com/in/maeve-shannahan

“I feel extremely lucky to learn and collaborate with pioneers in the field!”

HALL OF FAME

Five HousesOne Edgewood

Cheers echo through the hallways as the entire student body at Edgewood High School packs the gym for their cornerstone Catholic Schools Week Tradition, the Pep Rally, including competitions for the coveted Dominican Shield! This year the shield has even more significance and meaning as Edgewood introduced a new initiative - Edgewood Dominican Houses.

“The goal of the EHS House System” explains Edgewood Principal, Jerry Zander is to give each student on campus a place where they are embraced by their fellow House members while building a deeper relationship with their fellow students and to provide opportunities for growth, leadership, and engagement.” House Systems also enhance the sense of unity and engagement across all grade levels, and provide activities to maximize students’ unique spiritual, physical, emotional, and professional potential, while further enhancing the mission of EHS.

Catholic Schools Week kicked off this year with an induction ceremony as students were welcomed into one of five multi-grade level Houses. Each House, named after the five Sinsinawa Dominican Values on which Edgewood was founded - Truth, Compassion, Justice, Community & Partnership - has an identifiable color, Saint, motto and crest. Once students are inducted into a House, they are a part of that House for life and all family members are placed in the same house, building a legacy to span generations. “The deep way these Houses are already fostering connections speaks to how, at Edgewood, we build a community for life” adds EHS President, Kevin Rea.

Throughout the week, students participated in various competitions to earn points for their House. From fun dress up days, rock/paper/scissors challenges, hallway decorating, best cheer, and more, students stepped up their school spirit and came together as Five Houses - One Edgewood!

“The new Dominican House system is also an exciting new way for our faculty and staff to demonstrate their ongoing commitment to the mental and physical well being of our students” continues Rea. Student Life Coordinator, Stef Christensen also adds “The House system provides a platform to foster strong bonds between students and faculty and staff. During this amazing week students created memories with faculty members that they may not have ever had as a teacher.” Looking to the future, staff, faculty and students will collaborate to plan activities and service projects within each of their Houses.

EHS Campus Minister, Patricia Torres Rivera ‘19 is thrilled that “The Houses have allowed us to be witness to our students’ growth in a tangible way. To watch freshmen form personal bonds with seniors they didn’t know or to see students who are more introverted take leadership initiatives has been both rewarding and heart-warming. While the fire was lit by encouraging friendly House vs. House competition, the flame stays ignited by the outcome, an even tighter-knit EHS community than before. I am so very excited to see how the foundation laid this year will grow and expand in years to come.”

As the House of Truth, Edgewood stands for the authenticity, integrity, and confidence of all community members.

As the House of Compassion, Edgewood stands for kindness, empathy, and selflessness in serving and uplifting others.

As the House of Justice, Edgewood stands for serving and protecting by standing up for the common good and the rights of all.

As the House of Community, Edgewood stands for working in a collaborative and inclusive environment which promotes values that uplift everyone.

As the House of Partnership, Edgewood stands for accepting, supporting, and growing with one another in love.

THE ENDURING QUEST FOR TRUTH

This year, Edgewood High School centered its focus on the Sinsinawa Dominican value of TRUTH, a theme that resonates deeply within the pages of this magazine. As I reflect on this vital concept, I’m reminded of the familiar adage, “If you tell the truth, you don’t have to have a good memory.” While simple, this statement hints at the profound complexity of truth, a concept that appears over 135 times in Sacred Scripture.

Our contemporary, often post-Christian society, grapples with a distorted understanding of truth. The prevailing notion that individual truth reigns supreme relativism has led to a fragmented landscape where a shared, universal truth seems increasingly elusive. This erosion of a common understanding of truth manifests across all levels of society, from personal interactions to the pronouncements of government leaders, industry giants, and even organized religion. Compounding this issue is the ever-shifting nature of what is deemed “true,” resulting in widespread division and confusion. As the prophet Isaiah lamented, “For truth stumbles in the public square, uprightness cannot enter. Honesty is lacking, and the man who turns from evil is despoiled.” (Isaiah 59:14-15) The very notion of truth has become a contentious battleground. St. Paul’s poignant question in Galatians 4:16, “So now have I become your enemy by telling you the truth?” underscores this struggle.

As a Catholic high school rooted in the Sinsinawa Dominican tradition, we find our anchor in Jesus Christ, the ultimate source of truth. Standing before Pilate, Jesus declared, “...for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” (John 18:37) He further proclaimed, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” (John 14:6) Scripture unequivocally affirms that in Jesus, we encounter the TRUTH that transcends all others.

Throughout this academic year, we’ve explored the multifaceted nature of truth, discovering its vibrant presence in diverse aspects of our lives. We’ve witnessed how truth thrives in…

Our boys and girls basketball teams attended the Regional Special Olympics Basketball Tournament to support and cheer on our own, Earl Oakly, lunchroom assistant and a participant on the Special Olympics team. Earl has been a Super-Fan for the basketball teams this season, so our students wanted to return the favor. TRUTH is being present to those who are physically or mentally challenged.

Our 25th Annual Edgewood in the Community all-school service day. TRUTH is being present for those who need assistance.

Claims without evidence are opinions, and can be ignored, but a claim backed by copious, hard evidence, is hard to refute. Scientific truth should always be backed by evidence.

Throughout Edgewood’s Religious Studies curriculum, an understanding of Truth frames course content, discussion, activities and assignments. Students and teacher alike hone in on Truth as lived reality and the pursuit of asking complex and relevant questions while listening to others and discerning Truth as it meets real life.

We continually seek Truth by uplifting the strengths and addressing the areas of growth our student population exhibits.

In Public Speaking class, I combine the Truth lecture with a second lecture on Campaigns and Propaganda. I developed the Truth lecture as part of a summer I spent studying the subject with Sister Sarah Naughton, O.P., who was the archivist at the time at Edgewood College.

Students have defined for themselves what is expected for each of the Dominican Values including Truth.

These examples merely scratch the surface of how TRUTH is cultivated and embodied daily at Edgewood High School. The pursuit of truth is a continuous, lifelong endeavor, a journey that challenges us at every stage. Truth always challenges us to grow and to change. While this path may be arduous and demanding, it inevitably guides us closer to discerning genuine truth from falsehood. As Jesus promised, “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32)

Our students are guided by the four pillars of Dominican life —

PRAYER, STUDY, COMMUNITY, PREACHING

GUIDING STUDENTS IN FAITH

Edgewood school days begin with prayer and we celebrate weekly community Mass in our school Chapel. Students of all backgrounds participate in liturgies, and Catholic students can assist as acolytes, altar servers, and eucharistic ministers at Mass. We guide our students and community to seek a deeper relationship with Christ through retreats, prayer, study, worship and our Campus Ministry team.

Sister Kathleen O’Connell, OP

Sister Kathleen served as principal of EHS for 29 years from 1954-1984. This year marks 25 years since her passing. While at Edgewood, Sr. O’Connell introduced curriculum changes and oversaw the 1967 building addition which doubled the size of the school. On May 11, 1984, the state of Wisconsin Governor, Anthony S. Earl, made a proclamation to honor her outstanding service, enlightened leadership and commitment to academic excellence. Sr. O’Connell showed the rare combination of ability, energy and dedication needed to meet the challenges in education effectively and successfully.

Truth isn’t just uncovering the facts, but maintaining the importance of committing to stay honest and loyal to one’s self and others even in the hardest times. With the new Dominican House System in place this year, I was placed in the House of Truth. Our house is a close-knit circle of friends that feel like family, and even though I only got to experience the House System for a short time, it was unforgettable. Working together to create the “Garden of Truth” for everyone to walk through and sharing the excitement everyone had leading up to the pep rally was something I will always cherish. It allowed me the opportunity to grow closer to people I otherwise would not have been able to. Although House of Truth did not win the Pep Rally this year, I am proud and honored to be a part of this new initiative and knowing that the experiences we all shared as a House will last a lifetime.

Aidan Sharkey ‘26 . Junior

Participating in the reentry simulation at school was a valuable and eye-opening experience. It helped me understand the many challenges that formerly incarcerated individuals face when trying to reintegrate into society. I learned about the difficulties of finding housing, securing employment, accessing transportation, and meeting probation requirements, all while trying to avoid falling back into the system. This simulation gave me a deeper appreciation for the obstacles people encounter after release and the importance of support systems in helping them succeed.

Freema Childs ‘27 . Sophomore

Being an athlete and participating in sports as well as being a part of the arts in Edgewood is a great way to make new friends. It is also a great way to connect with your community. Most of the friends that I’ve made during my years here at Edgewood were through the various sports I play (volleyball, basketball and softball) and experiencing our Musical Theatre program by being in both cast and crew for many of the Edgewood Musicals. I get to truly express myself and make new friends that appreciate me for me.

Finn Bower ‘28 . Freshman

I came to Edgewood from one of the Catholic schools here in Madison. I knew quite a few people going into freshman year, but my class was still rather large and I still felt somewhat alone as I prepared to start my journey through high school. I was able to find more community and learn more about what makes Edgewood unique during the summer FIT activities. I met several new people, and many of them I am still close with today. I was able to get a better sense overall of what high school would be like. I ran Cross Country in the fall and made good friends during the summer for our optional practices. As soon as freshman year began, I already felt immersed in the Edgewood community. I joined FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America), helped with backstage for Edgewood Drama’s fall musical Into the Woods, and attended more of the FIT activities as the year progressed. As I am writing this, my freshman year is coming to a close, but I am more than happy with all I have accomplished. I have made new friends that will last me a lifetime and have been able to be a part of unique opportunities that will help guide me through my high school and lifelong journeys.

excited to welcome our new students that will be joining our Crusaders this fall as the class of 2029. With this incoming freshmen class, our school enrollment for 2025-26 is expected to be over 600 students. Save the Date - our Admissions Open House is on Sunday, October 5. On February 22, our community gathered on Madison’s east side at Garver Feed Mill for an inspiring evening that directly supports our students and The Mazzuchelli Fund.

Delish was a tremendous success, raising $425,000 which provides critical financial assistance to students and furthers our ongoing efforts to ensure an Edgewood education is accessible to all.

Highlights of the evening included student Daniel Lee ‘26 and his sous chef winning Edgewood’s Top Chef and honoring a group of former teachers who retired during the pandemic: Wade DallaGrana, Karen Houlihan, Kym Husom, Don Regina and Pam Hanson Stewart.

This vibrant, community-building event would not have been possible without the dedicated efforts of so many including our event committee volunteers, our generous sponsors, and, of course, our very generous guests.

Please support these local restaurants who donated to our event: Heritage Tavern, The Coopers Tavern, Everly, Bandit Tacos & Coffee, Just Veggiez, Salamone’s Italian Pizzeria, Hubbard Avenue Diner, Craig’s Cake Shop.

Tradition meets Tomorrow. Our path Forward.

Distraction-Free, Safe Learning Environment

The safety of our students and staff is a top priority. This year, we consulted alumni Mike Hanson ‘90, retired Captain with the Madison Police Department of 23 years, to create and implement new school-wide security policies. We look forward to sharing these new plans with our community this coming school year.

With safety in mind, Edgewood High School will also be using Yondr pouches to make our campus phone-free. Our students deserve a learning environment where they can thrive, free from the distractions of cell phones and social media. Students will experience the focus, creativity, and relief that comes with a phone-free education.

Studies show dramatic improvements in student wellbeing, academic performance, classroom engagement, and social connection in phone-free schools. A key to school safety is also eliminating digital distractions so in the midst of an emergency, students can focus on taking direction from trained staff and first responders to ensure their safety.

Study Abroad trips provide our students with worldly

educational experiences

Last summer, Edgewood students traveled to England and toured Buckingham Palace, Lake District, Shakespeare’s Globe Theater, Oxford University, Eagle and Child (Inklings writers

CS Lewis and JRR Tolein’s meeting place), Stratford Upon Avon and The Jane Austen Centre in Bath. Additional study abroad opportunities include Japan, Greece and Italy!

Crusader Sidekick

Edgewood kicked off a new program this past Spring for 1st-4th graders to bond with high school students by exchanging letters and practicing a Crusader sport with them. Sidekicks from area elementary schools came and joined their Big Crusader Sidekick for a Track & Field practice on April 16th and a fun celebration on May 14th. This upcoming school year, we plan to have Sidekicks participate in multiple sports, art and theater.

Board of Directors

Our Board of Directors works hand-in-hand with our president and administration to ensure fulfillment of Edgewood’s mission and vision. Members of the board are generous of their time and expertise, and we appreciate their support.

Updating Historic Bishop’s Doors

A generous donor has made a pledge which is allowing us to restore the Bishop’s Balcony to its original terracotta glory. Just in time for graduates and new students to walk through our Bishop’s Doors. The work will be completed in early fall.
