ON THE EDGE OF PERCEPTION

It’s time to connect with the ancestors and revel in the everywhen. Call to the age when the land was inhabited by our ancestral heroes as they walked with the gods and were gifted with supernatural abilities that still sing to our souls.

Living On The Edge Of Perception Welcome to

Reclaiming the grace of living in sync with the rhythms of nature

At one time, challenging one’s own thoughts was not only highly regarded, it was considered a vital part of learning, an essential element of crafting a democracy that could last the ages and weather the worst of times. Delve into these ideas and practices with the expectation of looking at something from a different perspective. In the pages that follow, we explore how people think, feel and interact with nature, rhythm and the mysteries of life in ways that support observation, discussion, and reassessment. It is one of the great joys of living to question what we see and feel, to stand in the place of caught breath.

THIS MONTH’S PRACTICE IS NATURE DREAMING.

If you seek a more personal relationship with nature, begin a nature-meditation or dream practice. Hold something you find in the natural world as you meditate. Put it under your pillow and as you start to get sleepy, repeat the words, “I will dream and talk to _______” (the item you

Once you feel a connection and notice movement in your dreams, add a second item. Hold both for a few nights before removing the first and dreaming about into second. Then speak with others about it, bringing it a new energy and a place in your life.

Crisply the bright snow whispered, Crunching beneath our feet; Behind us as we walked along the parkway, Our shadows danced, Fantastic shapes in vivid blue. Across the lake the skaters

Flew to and fro, With sharp turns weaving A frail invisible net.

In ecstasy the earth

Drank the silver sunlight;

In ecstasy the skaters Drank the wine of speed; In ecstasy we laughed Drinking the wine of love. Had not the music of our joy Sounded its highest note? But no,

For suddenly, with lifted eyes you said, “Oh look!”

There, on the black bough of a snow flecked maple, Fearless and gay as our love, A bluejay cocked his crest!

from the editor

For me, living in North Texas, it no longer feels like winter until February. But only if we get an ice storm. In the decade since moving here, we’ve only had a few Februarys with an actual winter storm.

This year, we had it in January and it’s completely messed me up! I’m ready to start planting now.

But this is the true rhythm of nature, isn’t it? We can plan and expect and even long for what we remember but are reminded that Mother Nature has her own calendar, and we shall accept what we are given, when we are given it.

I step into the flow and then I let go.

The old chant is remarkably accurate.

Step into the season that surrounds you, whether it be the Wheel of the Year, or the wheel of your life. February reminds us that we need know ourself fully to embrace the moment and let go of attachments and expectations.

The authors this month do a great job of sharing how they exist, in this moment, by stepping into the flow.

Wishing you deep-winter peace~

The Shaman’s Lens

with Dwight Harriman

Brigid

It’s so important to have a way to measure the turning of the seasons. Without that, the days can blur into one another. Imbolc, as part of the pagan calendar, is an essential marker for the year. It also has a more personal meaning because I met one of my Spirit Guides during an Imbolc celebration.

As a shaman, I have a council of Spirit Guides who work with me. I met one during an Imbolic ceremony. February 2nd is also Saint Brigid's day, and I met her in a ceremony that day.

I have led hundreds of people on journeys and ceremonies in my shamanic work. I enjoy holding sacred space so others can do their work. I also enjoy just being a participant in a ceremony/journey led by another person. This is about one of those times.

I was in a salt cave in a ceremony led by Val Hudgins a few years ago. She’s a wonderful metaphysical healer and hypnotherapist. Her contact information is below. Val led the group on a journey to visit with St. Bridgid.

Alphonse Mucha - Poetry

Valerie first told us about Brigid’s history and connection with Ireland, that she was a Goddess the Catholics had claimed as a Saint. Then, she settled us into a journey; after a few minutes, she said that Bridgid would meet us on the trail in the journey and lead us to her hut.

She has turned out to be more playful than the others on my council. I immediately felt like I had met her before, which turned out to be true.

“I was walking hand in hand with a green-eyed, auburn-haired Goddess. “

Bridgid came to me, embraced me, and took my hand, walking companionly beside me. I was walking hand in hand with a greeneyed, auburn-haired Goddess. That was amazing.

We did stop by her hut briefly, mainly because Valerie suggested that. On the outside, it was quite small and hardly seemed fitting for a Goddess. The inside was somehow much larger than the outside, with comfortable chairs, a fireplace, and a hearth. There were doors leading to

The Shaman’s Lens

other rooms I wasn’t invited into then and had no desire to open without Bridgid’s permission.

After the brief stop at her hut, we ignored Val’s instructions, which happens in journeys, and continued walking to my Council Fire, which was both far away from her hut and just next door. Which also happens in journeys.

Welcomed as an old friend, she greeted everyone there, giving huge bear hugs to Hecate, Ogun, and St. Francis. As the journey continued, I began to realize that another spot around the fire had been taken. A new member of my council had appeared.

She has been there ever since.

As with all the other members of

the council, she had been watching over me from lifetime to lifetime. I get reintroduced to them each lifetime.

With most people, Brigid presents as one of her aspects child, woman, crone—at a time, not with me. Once she took her place as a council member, she showed all three of her aspects at once. Sometimes, all three would be present, and sometimes, they would rotate faster than I could keep track of. Hecate started doing that, too.

It was so confusing seeing three faces and three bodies at once. They both told me it was an honor, that most people couldn’t deal with the rapid transformations.

This went on for weeks until they finally took pity on me and told me that the third eye is unchanged. I could look at that and the continuous shift from child to woman to crone would resolve into one aspect for me.

At the end of the journey, Valerie gave Brigid’s cross to everyone in the group as a memento. It was a simple cross made of reeds that Valerie had grown herself. It stayed on my mesa (my altar) until the next year’s Imbolc, when it was burned and replaced. Soon, as the seasons change, it will be time to make another one.

Seeing the Spinal Flow

Exploring her spine’s triangular base, my fingers stop unbidden.

This is the spot. I can feel it.

Closing my eyes I sink…

…into myself

…into the access point

…into eternity.

Emerging from the bliss, I open my eyes and gaze softly at her back.

A twitch, a flicker, an undulation. There it is.

A

simple thing…

A quiet cornfield long after harvest. It’s amazing how, when you move to lands that never see snow, something as simple as a field resting in a quiet dawn feels like a lost miracle.

The hearth can be any place that calls to you.

Reviving Your Sacred The Modern Hearth: Space at Imbolc

As the Wheel of the Year turns, we reach Imbolc, marking the midway point between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox. Fire plays a central role in this Sabbat, symbolizing the return of warmth, light, and the early stirrings of spring. Traditionally, the lighting of the hearth during Imbolc represents these themes.

In ancient times, the hearth was the heart of the home. It provided warmth, light, and nourishment and was a gathering place for families and communities. It was a sacred space, often associated with deities such as Hestia or Brigid, representing life, continuity, and protection. While modern technology has largely replaced open flames for cooking and heating, the concept of the hearth remains relevant. It’s now more

Finding The Magic

In The Mundane

with Amanda Wanless

about connection, comfort, and belonging.

Today, the hearth transcends physical space. It’s wherever we cultivate warmth, whether in a cozy living room, a bustling kitchen, or a quiet moment of self-care. These practices and spaces anchor us, creating a sense of home in our world and ourselves.

Your hearth may change throughout the seasons. During the warmer months, my porch becomes a hearth; however, I’m often cozied up in my living room in the cooler months. One space that always feels like the heart of my home is the area connecting my living room, dining room, and kitchen. I can’t tell

you how many times throughout the year I wake early, sit silently, and watch the sunrise fill the space with light. Regardless of what I’m struggling with, in that moment, as the light begins to pour into the room, the world goes silent, and I find my center in the stillness. Your hearth doesn’t have to be extravagant or perfect; it just needs to be authentic to you.

However, sometimes, daily life can cause our hearths to feel neglected. Clutter accumulates, routines become overwhelming, and our homes can shift from a sanctuary to a source of stress. With its theme of renewal, Imbolc is a great time to reassess and reinvigorate our physical and emotional spaces. Imbolc encourages us to release what

what no longer serves us, which can involve decluttering physical items, clearing mental patterns, or reevaluating behaviors. Purging is a vital first step toward creating a sacred space that supports and nourishes us. Letting go of the old makes room for new energy and opportunities. In today’s fast-paced world, reconnecting with the essence of the hearth can be deeply healing. It invites us to slow down, nurture relationships, and honor the spaces we inhabit.

Dedicate an area in your home as your hearth. It could be your kitchen, a cozy reading nook, or even an altar space. Adorn it with items that spark inspiration, comfort, and joy.

The hearth’s traditional role in cooking and sharing meals remains timeless. Prepare a comforting dish or bake bread with intention. Share it with loved ones or enjoy it alone, savoring each bite with gratitude. The hearth’s warmth also exists within you. Nurture your inner fire through meditation, journaling, or creative activities focusing on what fills you with energy and joy.

Lighting a candle is another simple yet powerful act to honor the hearth. Focus on your intentions for the season as the flame burns, letting it symbolize the warmth and light you wish to bring into your life and others.

The hearth is a space of welcome. Extend this spirit by hosting gatherings, inviting someone for tea, or donating items you no longer need.

Acts of

kindness and sharing embody the hearth’s essence.

“The concept of the hearth remains relevant it’s now more about connection, comfort, and belonging.”

By embracing the hearth in modern times, we honor an ancient tradition and deepen our connections with ourselves, our loved ones, and the spaces we call home. This Imbolc, let the hearth inspire you to nurture your inner warmth and shine your light for the world.

TAROT WISDOM

with Ruth Souther

the hermit

Winter is a time of quiet introspection, even if you live in a climate that doesn’t change as much as Central Illinois, where I live.

Nature goes inward and underground to prepare for regeneration in the Spring.

Imagine this:

You’ve been standing a very long time in one place, balanced on your principles and truth, defending your identity against judgments. You’ve put yourself in an awkward spot.

“You’ve only been able to see what’s in front of you, but the past and future weigh heavily on your shoulders.”

You’re tired, stressed, and longing for a change but not ready to announce this to the public. You’ve only been able to see what’s in front of you, but the past and future weigh heavily on your shoulders.

It’s time to set that burden down and seek that change. You see a path leading into a forest as you step off your pedestal. Do you dare follow your heart and plunge into the unfamiliar? Into the darkness?

Who knows what’s in there? Old thoughts, emotions, or patterns that remind you why you self-isolated in the first place?

Without further thought, you enter the forest.

“What am I doing?”

No one answers because you are absolutely alone. The smells of decomposing leaves, the scent of pine needles, and the only sound is the wind blowing through the tops of the trees. You taste…seclusion.

You don’t know where it’s leading, but you’re willing to go into the unknown. As your feet follow the worn path, you wonder aloud, “Who has been here before me? Did they find what they were looking for?

“Enough about others. What am I seeking?”

Deeper and deeper into the woods, you go. Fear creeps up your back as you hear rustling in the overgrowth. What creature waits to leap out at you?

An enormous, terrifying black dog appears, with not one head but three. Run. Run. Run. And the dog follows.

And then, you realize it’s your shadow stalking your steps. You can never shake your shadow It’s part of you. Better to face it head-on. With shaking hands, you hold out your palm, and when the giant dog licks you with his rough tongue, something changes.

That hidden part is not as scary as you thought. You realize you can be friends with those pieces, release the traumas, and be healed.

Facing the painful past wasn’t on your to-do list, yet here you are, alone and now unafraid. With a deep breath and your furry companion, you muster on.

The past has slipped away, but what about the future? You’ve held onto specific visions far too long, dreams that didn’t come to fruition, but what would replace them if you let them go?

You contemplate your prospects, devoid of ideas, even feeling empty with nothing to drive you forward. But then, you see something shiny hiding in the tall grasses.

As you push them apart, you find a golden egg. Reaching to touch it, you jerk back as a snake slithers forward. Ahh yes. The message is clear: shed the old and pick up the bright, shiny new thing that wants to be born, even if you don’t know what it is.

Conception. Rebirth. The end of an old cycle and the beginning of the next. What will it be? Break open the egg? Shed your skin and be renewed?

It doesn’t matter, as you can barely contain your excitement. You feel the shift in your body as your mind and heart catch fire. Taking deep breaths, you stand still for a moment to take it all in.

The path beckons as you hurry through the dark woods, ready to begin the next chapter of your life. As you break free from the forest’s depths, the big dog fades back and leaves you to it.

To your amazement, you are greeted by a carnival as you emerge from the shadows. Bright, flashing lights, a cacophony of music and laughter, and enticing scents make your mouth water.

It’s dawn, and the sun is rising. The longest night is done for this year. It’s time to celebrate.

The dream is right in front of you. Do you dare go forward and hop on one of those rides?

February

COLD, DARK, and the ultimate excuse for hearty meals, blankets, and couch time, February is the month for love.

And I am all in! This is prime nap season, folks. Not that we need an excuse.

I have two foolproof ways to get into the February vibe this month.

First up, the sparkly red bag!

Last year, I stumbled upon an article proclaiming the sparkly red purse as in vogue, so 26.557 seconds later, I was the proud owner of the most fabulous sparkly red bag ever to grace my closet. The next day, it was delivered to my door (Crazy times we live in, but that is a column for another day.)

Her name is Moulin and my bag has become a super star. Every time I take her out, she’s adored by friends and strangers. Whether it’s a compliment from a coworker, a smile from a barista, or a knowing nod from someone who gets it, my little sparkly red purse never fails, a tiny ambassador of joy.

When I catch a glimpse of her hanging on the doorknob, I do a happy

“Her name is Moulin and my bag has become a super star.”

dance. She is my magical weapon for those occasions (read: weekdays) when I am dragged, kicking and screaming, off the couch, and out into Chicago’s gloomy weather.

So, if you don’t already have a sparkly red accessory (or similar), these are your marching orders! Grab one. Wear it. Shine. It’s your February shield.

The second (and more delicious) foolproof way to be in a February state of mind is… (pause for dramatic effect)

The spirit of Saffron!

Known for her vibrant golden hue, saffron has been celebrated for centuries as a symbol of warmth, love, and joy. Persian poetry is said to ignite the heart; in ancient Egypt, Cleopatra used saffron in her baths to enhance her allure. (Though no one ever says if she turned orange!)

But saffron isn’t just for romantics, it’s also a mood booster, thanks to its natural antidepressant properties.

The unimposing yet powerful queen of spices. Saffron is said to reveal hidden truths. After cooking with saffron, I always save a single thread and place it on my nightstand to inspire a dream future forecast.

Legend has it that your dreams will offer a glimpse into the future. New opportunities, adventures, or the spark of inspiration you need to chase away those winter blues.

Saffron Risotto of Joy

Now, if you have not made risotto using the oven. Prepare to have your mind completely blown! I. Mean. Blown!

I love risotto, but there is no way I’m standing over the stove and mixing it! This is delicious, nutritious, and so sooooo forgiving; if you get the liquidto-rice ratio slightly off, it still works and is delicious. But I aim for 5 cups of liquid to one cup of rice. Most recipes say 4 cups, but trust me 5 cups makes a fluffier risotto.

I can’t oversell this beautiful dish.

“I can’t oversell this beautiful dish.”

GATHER THE INGREDIENTS:

• 1 cup Arborio rice

• 5 cups chicken or vegetable

stock (I prefer chicken, but either way, please note it is stock, not broth)

• 1 smallish onion, finely chopped, any kind (or even none) will do, but I like yellow

• 2 tbsp olive or avocado oil

• 1/4 tsp saffron threads (soaked in 2 tbsp warm water)

• 3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (get the good stuff, it matters)

• Salt and pepper to taste

• A little oregano or basil, again to taste

• A sprinkle of chopped parsley for garnish (Some say this is optional; I am not one of those people, but you do you).

SET THE OVEN TO 350°F (175°C)

1.Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

2.Heat the stock in a saucepan until warm, then keep it on low heat.

3.Heat the oil over medium heat in a large, oven-safe pan or Dutch oven. Add the chopped onion and sauté until soft and translucent, about 3-4 minutes.

4.Stir in the Arborio rice and cook for 12 minutes until lightly toasted and fragrant.

5.Add the warm stock all at once, along with the saffron threads and their soaking water. Stir to mix everything evenly. Imagine your happy future eating this risotto.

6.Cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid or aluminum foil and place it in the oven. (this can be tricky; it is sloshy, be careful)

7.Bake for 25-30 minutes, stirring once halfway through, until the rice is tender and most of the liquid is absorbed.

8.Remove the pot from the oven. Stir in grated Parmesan cheese and season with salt, pepper, oregano, or basil to taste.

9.Sprinkle with parsley, and serve warm.

10.Share the Love (or not)

Saffron Buying Guide

• Amazon offers a variety of saffron brands. Look for highly rated options like Zaran Saffron or Golden Saffron.

• Penzeys! (My personal favorite) They sell high-quality saffron and ship directly to your home.

• A Google search tells me that you can also find saffron at Spanish or Persian stores. I would definitely check if have one near you.

• Stores like Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, and some Costcos carry saffron in the spice aisle.

I have not personally tried the Whole Foods saffron, but I am sure it is great.

TIPS:

• Look for deep red threads with a slight orange hue at the tips if possible.

• Avoid saffron that looks too light or is ground.

• High-quality saffron will have a strong, sweet aroma with earthy undertones. I have never had saffron go “bad” on me; as it ages, I just use more to get the flavor.

• Iran, Spain, and India are top saffron producers.

Saffron’s Divination Meaning

Sheesh! I got so wrapped up in the recipe that I almost forgot to tell you about the divinatory meanings of saffron.

Saffron has long been associated with warmth, wisdom, and clarity. Its golden hue symbolizes the sun's light, making it a spice of enlightenment and illumination. In divination, saffron is believed to:

• Ignite passion and creativity with saffron, sparking new ideas or reigniting old passions.

• Bring clarity and focus to your mind, helping you see the path ahead, whether seeking inspiration or answers.

• Invite joy and positivity by boosting mood and energy, clearing mental fog, and encouraging happiness.

• Enhance the energy around you when saffron is used in a meal, fostering a sense of connection and purpose.

Before you sit down to dinner, put on your warmest and fuzziest socks.

This is how you bring in the Ancient Goddess of Fuzzy Love and Wonderfulness, whom I just made up. Her name is Amoria Lux.

Amoria Lux embodies warmth in all her forms—emotional, physical, and spiritual. She brings light, offers comfort, and inspires connection.

A Warm and Fuzzy Spell

Her presence is like a cozy fire on a snowy evening. Any spell you craft is the right spell. But if you’d like a little enchantment to get you started, here it is.

Golden strands of light and cheer, Cheer my heart at winter’s near.

In joy and love, I set my way, Bright and yellow is saffron’s day.

As you savor the saffron risotto, set an intention for what you’d like to welcome into your life. All Hail Amoria Lux!

Meditate on the moment and see what emerges.

The Alchemy of Devotion

I journey deep within, to the cave where dragons abide.

Excavating buried treasure, beneath a new moon sky.

The passage is snug and ambiguous, where misty shadows lie.

I press onward with narrow footing, sensing the way inside.

Palms flat against the roughness and roundness of her girth,

I grip her fascia firmly, feeling one with Mother Earth.

I sidestep through the coolness, the path uncertain still.

The walls of hieroglyphics are filled with benevolence and will.

Deliberate and cautious, I am uprooted from within I slip into the mudslide grooves within her ancient skin.

The abyss below awaits my free fall of rigid hope.

I feel the mother's welcome as I succumb to the treacherous slope.

Down into the grotto, to the chasm of purification, I descend, The alchemy of devotion, I am in the kettle once again. The familiarity grows as I acknowledge my current abode.

In the belly of the Dark Mother, to resurrect the goddess code.

As my eyes begin to acclimate to the luminescence of the space

“Ah, this is familiar,” I declare as I feel warmth from the fire’s embrace.

I sit in the cauldron of chaos. I have died and rebirthed here before The heat holds both comfort and fear that urges my survival to roar.

Here I surrender, a moment of reckoning—there is no reprieve.

Held in the glow where wisdom pours, and the potions of truths interweave.

A deep quiet of sorrow and softening, the heartbeat an ancient hum

The earth beneath me shakes and quakes, the rumble of echoing drums.

An amplified voice ricochets like a gong resonating in my cells.

“I will no longer be sacrificed, “is declared with a reverberating swell.

Instantly, I am traipsing through the sunless forest, of the misty and deep.

Her wild hair and flailing arms conjure dark into dawn with a sweep.

We are feasting on berries and juicy plums the color of midnight.

Nourishing ourselves with sweet black cherries filled with succulent delight.

She giggles and howls with abandon, freeing the mystical spirit within my core.

She cackles with raucous laughter, igniting power I have long ignored.

I feared my fire, my ocean of emotion, and disowned my vibrant flame.

How often I subdued or misused my untamed essence to play a life-by-the-rules game.

I tensed my pulsing pleasure craft, gave it away, or shut it down.

I dimmed the jewels of radiance for a sacrificial crown.

Time and again, I faced the gallery of shame. Being more afraid of myself than any of others' names

Written on the ramparts of time, these fates no longer stand.

The Witch, the Sage, and the Medicine Women are born to rise again.

No fear of darkness, no fear of light, no more doing it confined to a shrine.

There is no need to dull or shrink, you will sync into both human and divine.

THE PONDERING PRIESTESS

Embracing Our Authenticity: The Call of Imbolc 2025

Over the past century and a half, society has witnessed a profound shift—a movement away from the rigid social norms of previous eras and toward the celebration of individuality and personal expression. People have increasingly sought to break free from expectations and embrace their unique voices. This movement has evolved into a call for authenticity: the deep need to live in alignment with our truest selves, free from the pressures of conformity.

As we approach Imbolc 2025, we find ourselves at a pivotal moment, one where this movement toward authenticity feels more urgent than ever. Imbolc, marking the midpoint of winter, is traditionally a time of renewal, purification, and reflection. It is also the time when we celebrate Brigid’s fire a symbol of transformation, creativity, and inner strength. This Imbolc, we are invited to shed the layers that separate us from our authentic selves and

embrace the inner light that calls us to live with conviction.

The lessons of history are clear: when we prioritize societal expectations over personal truths, the consequences can be dire. From the atrocities of the Holocaust to the present-day struggles for justice and equality, the dangers of suppressing our authenticity have been vividly illustrated.

This Imbolc, as we honor the energy of renewal, we are called to stand firm in our truth, knowing that, while we cannot control everything around us, we can choose to live authentically and make a meaningful difference.

“.. authenticity: the deep need to live in alignment with our truest selves, free from the pressures of conformity.”

For centuries, society enforced strict norms that dictated how people should behave based on factors like gender, class, and age. These expectations were often rigid, leaving little room for personal expression. People were often discouraged from stepping outside these boundaries, and those who did were frequently ostracized or persecuted.

However, in the last 150 years, societal structures have gradually shifted. The Industrial Revolution, democratic movements, and social justice efforts particularly the civil rights, feminist, and LGBTQ+ movements have challenged long-held norms. These efforts have empowered individuals to express their true selves and

question the systems that once confined them.

Today, technology has amplified this movement, allowing people to share their stories and connect with like-minded individuals globally. The internet and social media, while not without their own pressures, have provided new opportunities for marginalized groups to be heard and for individuals to embrace their unique identities.

Despite these advances, the pressure to conform remains a powerful force. Whether through career expectations, relationships, The fear of rejection and judgment often leads people to suppress parts of themselves in order to fit in.

As society evolves, so does our understanding of what it means to be authentic. Authenticity goes beyond simply being true to oneself; it involves aligning our actions, words, and beliefs with our deepest values and desires. It requires shedding the layers of social conditioning that have shaped us and rediscovering the essence of who we are.

This pursuit of authenticity has become a central theme in recent years, with more people seeking lives that reflect their true selves. It is not an easy task, as it often means confronting deeply ingrained fears, societal expectations, and the uncertainty of standing out. Yet, the rewards of living authentically are undeniable. When we live in

alignment with our truest selves, we experience fulfillment, clarity, and a sense of purpose that cannot be found in conformity.

Imbolc, in its celebration of Brigid's fire, is an apt symbol for this journey toward authenticity. Brigid, the Celtic goddess of healing, creativity, and transformation, represents the fire

that burns within all of us, a source of inspiration and growth. Her flame symbolizes both external warmth and the inner fire that drives us to live our truth. Imbolc invites us to kindle that fire, to ignite our passions, and to embrace the transformation that comes with living authentically.

Imbolc, falling halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox, marks a time of both reflection and renewal.

It is traditionally seen as a moment for purification, clearing away the old to make room for new growth. Just as the earth begins to stir in anticipation of spring, so too can we stir the seeds of our own potential.

In Celtic traditions, the goddess Brigid is honored at Imbolc, embodying the creative energy that fuels transformation. She is often depicted with a flame or torch, symbolizing both the return of light and the power of inner fire. As we celebrate Imbolc, we are reminded that, like the earth, we too have the capacity to renew ourselves, to

shed what no longer serves us, and to embrace our true path.

Imbolc is the perfect time for introspection, for considering how far we have come and what we still wish to release. The fire of Brigid offers both a challenge and an invitation: to light the way for ourselves and others, to cultivate what is meaningful, and to transform the parts of our lives that no longer reflect our deepest truths.

This year, as we approach Imbolc 2025, we are called to engage in a deeper level of selfreflection and renewal. It is a time to pause and consider how we have internalized the expectations of others and to decide what aspects of ourselves are ready for

release. The fire of Imbolc encourages us to take bold steps toward authenticity and to live in a way that aligns with our deepest values.

We live in a world marked by division and uncertainty. Political polarization, social unrest, and environmental challenges have created a sense of fear and helplessness. In such times, the pressure to conform to adhere to popular opinions and mainstream ideologies can be overwhelming. Yet, it is precisely in these moments that our authenticity becomes crucial.

History provides a stark reminder of the dangers of suppressing authenticity.

The horrors of the Holocaust, for instance, illustrate the consequences of individuals abandoning their moral compass to conform to oppressive systems. Studies from that time show that under the right circumstances, people can be pushed to abandon their principles in favor of following authority or societal norms. This historical lesson underscores why authenticity is not just a personal matter; it is a collective responsibility. When we fail to live according to our values, we contribute to systems of harm and injustice. On the other hand, when we stand firm in our truth, we become agents of change.

Authenticity is a powerful force for healing, growth, and social transformation.

Imbolc 2025 reminds us that we all carry a unique light. By embracing our authenticity, we contribute to the creation of a more compassionate and just world. While we cannot control the global or societal forces around us, we can choose how we respond. By living in alignment with our deepest values, we can inspire others to do the same, creating a ripple effect of authenticity that can lead to meaningful change.

“Imbolc 2025 reminds us that we all carry a unique light.”

Imbolc 2025 is an invitation to reignite the fire within and to stand firmly in our truth. It is a time to cast off the layers of conditioning that have held us back and to step fully into who we are.

The energy of Imbolc encourages us to take bold actions, to trust our intuition, and to honor the path that feels most true to our hearts.

Living authentically is not always easy, and it may require difficult choices. We may face resistance from those who want us to conform, and we may struggle with self-doubt. But the fire of Brigid reminds us that, just as the earth will eventually bloom in the spring, our authenticity has the power to lead us toward growth and transformation. By aligning with our deepest values, we create the space for new possibilities, both for ourselves and for the world around us.

As we enter Imbolc 2025, let us embrace the invitation to live authentically. Let us shine our lights brightly, knowing that our individuality and personal truth are not only valid but vital. In a world that often demands conformity, the choice to live authentically is an act

“Imbolc 2025 is an invitation to reignite the fire within and to stand firmly in our truth.”

of rebellion, one that can create lasting change. By embracing our true selves, we contribute to the collective healing and transformation needed to build a more compassionate and just world.

Imbolc 2025 is a time of renewal, transformation, and authenticity. It is an invitation to reignite the fire within, to shed the layers of conditioning that have shaped us, and to embrace the full expression of who we are. The goddess Brigid offers us the gift of

creative energy, urging us to live with intention, courage, and conviction.

As we honor the sacred flame of Imbolc, we are reminded that our unique voices have the power to make a difference. In a world full of division and uncertainty, the path of authenticity is one that leads to healing and transformation. This Imbolc, let us commit to living in alignment with our deepest truths and to shining our lights for all to see. By doing so, we will not only honor ourselves but also contribute to a world that celebrates individuality, compassion, and freedom.

In what ways can you better align yourself with your deepest values this season?

Sacred Ceremonies Of Transformation

With ELLIOTT CHALLANDES

In my last two Winter columns, we have been working on slowing down and being self-reflective. We have been facing our fears and discovering our inner resources. We have been striving to live in the present moment and to generate a sense of personal safety. This is what the Winter season is all about, at least from an East-Asian Medicine perspective.

“BythetimeFebruary arrives,manyare experiencingtheblues.”

February is a transitional period as Winter is waning and the light of Spring begins to emerge. This is a time when we can begin to move out of our hibernation and welcome the returning light. Spring is just a few weeks away. This month is filled with the love and the promise that the Earth will be reborn again – green and alive.

Late-Winter Blues

However, by the time February arrives many are experiencing the blues. The lack of sunshine and those gray drizzly days can really negatively impact our moods. Whether it is truly Seasonal Affective Disorder or just an intense longing for Spring, we can become a little (or a lot) depressed. Lethargy can set in big time. We need to keep moving, both mentally and physically.

As we proceed out of our selfreflective phase, we can begin to recognize the ideas and issues that arose during this part of the annual cycle. You don’t have to have a full plan for manifestation, as that is part of the work during Spring. For now, just begin to acknowledge and categorize your experiences, thoughts and desires which surfaced during Winter.

For now, be a

Virgo;

make a list:

1.What emerged for you?

2.What do you fear?

3.What inhibits and limits you?

4.What is the top priority issue that needs to be addressed?

5.What inner resources did you discover?

6.What seeds might you begin to sow in Spring that will help overcome the limitations and roadblocks that you’ve identified.

7.What are you looking forward to when Spring arrives?

This list will enable you to create a plan during the Spring months. So, keep it handy. Also, use the personal ceremony below to help welcome the return of the light and reduce any seasonal dip in your mood that you may be experiencing.

“This list will enable youtocreateaplan duringtheSpring months. So,keepit handy.

”You don’t have to have a full plan for manifestation, as that is part of the work during Spring. For now, just begin to acknowledge and categorize your experiences, thoughts and desires which surfaced during Winter.”

Overcoming Winter Blues Ceremony

What you need:

• Candles, candles and more candles

• Your middle finger

GATHER AS MANY CANDLES AS PRACTICAL

Set them out in front of you. Alternatively, if you have the space, create a circle of candles that surround you.

Ground

Remember that the emotions of the Water Element are contained by the Earth Element. So, always start any personal ceremony with being grounded in the Earth. Feeling connected, centered and in the present moment.

Take a few slow deep breaths as you relax even further into the safety of the Earth.

BEGIN LIGHTING THE CANDLES

As you light them, create a mantra with each one. Perhaps saying something like: “I welcome the light into my mind, body and spirit.” and “I invoke the returning light to enliven the Earth and myself.”

BUILD ENERGY

With each candle that you light, let the energy build. Feel the fire in your belly grow. Build this sensation in your belly (solar plexus and sacral chakras) feeling the warmth that the light you are invoking creates.

EXPAND

When you have lit all the candles, use your imagination and let that feeling of warm light expand throughout your entire body. Now, expand it even further out into your bioenergetic field (aura).

LIGHT MEDITATION

Meditate with the light for a few minutes. Enjoy the sensation as it permeates your cells and enlivens your body, mind and spirit.

USE MIDDLE FINGER

After a few minutes, take the middle finger of your dominant hand and gently apply pressure to the Yintang acupoint. The Yintang is also known as the Third Eye pressure point. It is located in the center of the forehead, between the eyebrows, just above the bridge of the nose. Hold this point for at least one minute while restating your mantra or saying “The light enters me and activates me.The light lifts my spirits and gives me love, hope, happiness and growth.” .

RELEASE

At the point you feel that your personal ceremony is complete, release the Yintang point, thank the light, and extinguish the candles. Reconnect and ground yourself to the Earth.

A Blessing For Imbolc

The Wheel turns from darkness to light Winter wanes as Spring comes into sight

Longer days lay ahead with shorter nights I will plan my seeds that I need to sow

The returning light will make them grow Spring is coming, this for sure I know

The darkness is leaving along with the fear Activity, growth and warmth is near Blessing be upon you this time of year

Eye On MY HOME

Should you build a pollinators’ garden if your neighbors spray toxic chemicals on their lawn?

The answer is a resounding YES!

Bees Don’t Care About Your Neighbor’s Yard

I truly love it when the research tells me exactly what I long to hear. A recent open-access study *(thank you, researchers) showed that bees want what they want and will ignore competing areas to zoom in on their desires.

If you have an uncaring, sprayhappy neighbor you can still help the bees. Give the pollinators a great display, lots of variety, plus their favorite choices and they’ll ignore your neigbor’s yard.

While this doesn’t change how the wind might carry pesticides, you can check with state ordinances to see what exists to keep your yard free of their chemicals. It is illegal in most states to allow chemical sprays into a neighboring piece of land.

But if you haven’t planted a pollinator-friendly garden because you worried it would draw them to your neighbor’s yard, worry no more!

The research showed that:

 Bees like variety

 They don’t really care about the surrounding environment

 Bees will zero in on the particular plants that they like and ignore other landscapes

What did the researchers mean by “variety”?

 They used eighteen native perennials from three different plant families

 Sunflower plants, such as coreopsis, asters, and, well, sunflowers, offer great pollen (Asteraceae)

 The pea family of plants, including dwarf indigo and bush clover, offer high protein pollen (Fabaceae)

 Mint family plants provide a lot of sugary nectar, such as Mountain Mint and Cumberland Rosemary (Lamiaceae)
