فالتجربة معادة " هكذا سيقول خبراء الفن،" ال اصالة تقنيا في العمل ولكم.الغربي عن أعمال الفوتوغرام التي قدمتها الفنانة مها ملوح هم مخطئون في هذا الكالم! بعض الصور الفوتوغرافية التي أنجزت وبما أن المستقبل ينبثق، كانت من أعمال الفوتوغرام1840 حوالي العام ،من الماضي في نجد (حيث لم يكن للمساجد مآذن حتى فترة متأخرة ً ،)محمدا كان يدعو إلى الصالة من سطح بيته فيما يتذكر الناس أن ً ً فالفوتوغرام.ومثيرا أكثر مناسبا فإن استخدام الفوتوغرام هنا يبدو إذ،ال يحتاج الكاميرا كوسيط بين العالم وما يرغب الفنان في التقاطه ً ،دورا يشبه الى حد ما دور صغار األئمة؛ فهي تزودك تلعب الكاميرات أما الفوتوغرام. بعدسات جاهزة وتركيز أوتوماتيكي، مستعجال إذا كنت ً فيتطلب أن تتولى الفنانة بنفسها انتقاء األشياء التي تتمتع بمعنى وبعدئذ. ومن ثم ترتيبها على ورقة التصوير الحساسة،واقعي أو رمزي تضيء النور اللتقاط الصور التي انتقتها كي تتشارك في مستقبل ً مؤخرا إمام المسجد النبوي في المدينة خالل تقنية استخدمها.واحد .درس عن السلوك الطيب والخبيث
‘It has been done before so there is nothing original about the technique,’ is what western art experts will typically say about Malluh’s photograms. How wrong they will be. Some of the very first photographic images made in the 1840s were photograms, and since the future is made of the past in the Najd (where until recently mosques did not have minarets and people remember that Mohammed would call for prayers from the roof of his house), the use of photograms here seems most appropriate. And interesting. The photogram needs no camera as intermediary between the world and that which the artist wishes to capture, while cameras are a little like lesser imams; if you are in a hurry they serve you well with a ready-made lens and auto-focus. The photogram, however, requires the artist herself to select objects, which have a real or symbolic meaning, and arrange them on photosensitive paper. She then turns on the light to capture the selected images for future sharing. It is a technique which was recently used by the imam of the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina for a lesson about good and bad behaviour.

Maha Malluh is no imam, though she did mention Allah to me once, casually, as though to say His presence is everywhere. To my mind this is a sign of genuine belief, which differs from those who take a deep breath—as though they are about to lift something heavy—before speaking the name of Allah. I listen with secular European ears and look at what people make. And I wonder about a Saudi Arabian official, who last year wanted to visit the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam to discuss modernity and meet the “creative guy.” Vincent, the ‘creator’ of Van Gogh, died long ago and the museum is simply a heritage that sells tickets very well. There is, however, something to be learned from Van Gogh’s heritage. This most colourful of Dutch artists was the son and grandson of religious leaders, and he once aspired to be such a leader himself. This aspect of his upbringing shows through in the serious nature of his work, and it convinces me that should the sons and daughters of the imams and judges of the Najd discover art as a serious pastime, regiments of conceptually powerful artists may be unleashed upon the world.

Maha Malluh is perhaps like a medical doctor, passionately searching for diagnoses for all that challenges society’s health and well-being (“they are all doctors,” is what a travelled Saudi Arabian once told me of the educated population of Riyadh). At least this is what you might think from her first series of twenty photograms, Capturing Light, of which The Stethoscope is one of the defining images. Although, some of Malluh’s other diagnoses are not about the modest silence of the stethoscope; they speak loudly through the titles she has fixed to the images. For example, Bad News is put to an image of an embryo, which is only one of many works about pregnancy and overpopulation. She is not the only artist to suggest that if Saudi Arabia takes from the West only physical science, while ignoring all western social insights—including the consideration of having less, but better educated children—things may

he art of Maha Malluh does not follow an international school of painting; it is of a school of thought from the Najd, the region at the physical centre and philosophical core of Saudi Arabia. Her clear black and white images caught my attention because they were of a similar aesthetic to that of a television advertisement I had seen for timeshare apartments in Makkah. In the ad a father hands his son the keys to an apartment overlooking the Grand Mosque, thus providing for his future Islamic identity. Both father and son are dressed in white, but the setting, the curtains, the carpet and upholstery are all black. From seeing Malluh’s work I thought the artist must be well informed about the culture that produced this ad, and that her work might reflect a truth about her native country.
