What is the career options in the field of Lifescience?

Majority of students after completing their graduation in life science are often left wondering, what to do next?

Some students opt for PG courses (after appearing for GATE) or start preparing for higher education abroad.

Complete their PG then apply for PhD and so on. But majority of students leave the field and opt for jobs in IT or take up work in some other fields. So, the question here is WHY?

Why after completing 3 / 4 Years course students wander around and look for the options what to do? Even after getting a Under graduation Degree students are not employable? Why there is lack of awareness in students about their own field of work?

The main reason behind all this is lack of proper knowledge about the industry. So many students don’t know the importance of research and our field thrives on research. Majority of work is based on carrying out research. To carry out research we need to know the various technologies being used in the industry or latest trends in the Industry. Staying updated with the latest inventions is very important which can be easily done by subscribing to different blogs, referring to latest research papers being published, read about the latest discoveries Etc.

 If you are staying updated with all this knowledge you will develop a thought process in your mind as what you would want to pursue after the completion

of your UG or PG degree or else you can include these technologies in your final year dissertation project.  As it is a very important part of your career you should be the one deciding as what you want to do in your dissertation project. If you even have an idea as what you want to do in your dissertation project then you can start looking for help from your faculty members or experts outside your institution and then pursue that in your project.  Surely you will find somebody who will be available to help you. Also, if you are able to establish a good work you can go ahead and publish your work as well. You do not need to be a PhD or Faculty member to do so. If you are able to do it then I can assure you that you will have a great career ahead even if you don’t want to pursue PG or PhD.  So, this was one way of doing the things. Another way is getting the certification done. There are so many companies in India and outside India too who are providing very good training in different technologies. You can approach them to discuss your idea (if you have any) or else you can approach them



  

to get help as to what you should pursue in order to have a stable and growing career in lifesciences. You will surely get a very good response from their side too.

There are so many companies in India who are there to provide help to the students who are wandering as what to do after their UG or PG. Get a course with them and it should be atleast a 3 or 6 months course.

You can opt for a short workshop to see their quality of work and then go for a long-term training.

So, that you can be comfortable with paying the amount to them. As, obviously these trainings are going to be a bit expensive. But please don’t fall for their cheaper alternatives. Cheap training will sooth you now but in long run you will face problems.

This I can say from my own experience of training students, researchers, professionals in last 8 years at different places in India & Abroad. I have met a lot of participants in these workshops some of them were there just for the certificate, some of them were there for getting an idea for their own research, some for

socializing with people from different walks of life to understand who it’s like to be in industry.

We must understand that our field is very different from other field like IT, Mechanical Etc. So, if you are in the field be ready for research with your own interest and then carryout the work trust me you will enjoy a lot. For that you need to find out or figure out what you want to do here and how you want to contribute. As possibilities are endless.
