Dear Friends and Families of Edgemont Wrestling, Thank you so much for reading through our 2018-2019 Wrestling Journal. When I look back over my 17 years coaching wrestling at Edgemont and the many years before that when I competed here, it’s really amazing to see how the program has grown and developed. Through the collaborative efforts of our current and former wrestlers, their parents, our older alumni, our coaching staff and our administration Edgemont Wrestling has blossomed into one of Edgemont’s most successful athletic programs.

COACH’S

PAGE

I believe a lot of that can be attributed to our view that Edgemont Wrestling exists to help our student-athletes positively develop in ways that transcend athletics. We strive to “build Champions on the mat and in life.” Wrestling is simply our vehicle for making that happen.

As this PantherTough culture has taken root, our program has flourished and our wrestlers have benefited. Despite the very high standards to which we hold our student-athletes, our participation is at an all time high. Our varsity roster sits at 36 student-athletes – the largest it’s ever been in the 54 years of Edgemont Wrestling. Our youth team has over 60 families participating this winter, also the most we’ve ever had. A lot of this has to do with the way our wrestlers buy-in to, embrace and live out the culture, values and philosophy of our program. Their hard work and commitment to each other has created a culture that people throughout the Edgemont community want to be a part of. I couldn’t be more proud of the culture and leadership I’ve seen from our kids this year and the way they push each other and challenge each other to continually improve day in and day out. Our culture has always been about leaving the program in a better place than you found it – BUILDING something special – and our team has been holding up their end of the bargain. BUILD is our team’s mantra and something you can see our kids take to heart when they step on the mat to practice or compete. We can’t wait to see where this group ends up! Of course none of this happens without many, many people involved. If BUILD is our mantra, “It takes a village” should be our catch-phrase! Our full-time Assistant Coaches Bill Magner and Brett Pastore are both tremendous assets and play an important role in everything we do. We are also fortunate enough to welcome 25-year head coach George DiChiara back to our staff this year as a volunteer assistant coach. Our other volunteer coaches, John Marsh, Zak Niazi ’08, Dave Rice ’08, Dan Argast and Matt Lee ’07 are second-to-none. Our modified coaches, Jedd Chesterson and Rob Breitenbach, do an amazing job with our 7th and 8th graders, and, of course, our youth staff of Mike Mitchell, Brett and Matt continues to develop a solid foundation for our program with the help of some other alumni, Joe Guerrino ’05 and Colin Hopkins ‘14! Finally, a huge thank you to our two student managers, Eunice Ahn and Delphine Debargue, who help our program run so smoothly on a day-to-day basis. I also need to thank our Athletic Director, Anthony De Rosa, for being so supportive of our program and student-athletes; as well as Linda Wright and Dan Mahoney in the Athletics Department; Teresa Roane, our Athletic Trainer; and of course our maintenance staff for continually going out of their way to help our program function smoothly and successfully. Thank you! Last, but certainly not least, I’d like to thank the parents of our program. We all know wrestling is an extremely difficult sport for the competitors, but a wrestler’s parents have almost as great a challenge. Thank you so much for the rides, the laundry, the cooking and the never-ending support. Our coaches thank you and your children thank you! Special thanks to Annette Meglino who coordinated the production of this entire journal, and to Laura Seeley and Eileen Westler who coordinated our advertisements. It’s not an easy job and Annette, Laura and Eileen really did an amazing job making this journal a reality. Thank you so much! Here’s to another great year of Panther Wrestling! Feed the Panther,

Pete Jacobson Head Coach Edgemont Wrestling 3

IMPROVEMENT ACCOUNTABILITY FAMILY

HABITS

JOY

That’s our program’s goal. We accomplish this goal through constant reinforcement of our Panther Tough philosophy. So what is Panther Tough? The idea of Panther Tough embodies the qualities and values that develop Edgemont wrestlers into Champions on the mat and in life. Panther Tough student-athletes consistently make choices and take actions that develop these values. When our student-athletes do these things, we say they’re “Feeding The Panther.”

Panther Tough Core Values Improvement – constant focus on effort and getting

better everyday; focus on the process, not the outcome.

Accountability – be the person everyone knows they can depend on, take ownership – no excuses, no finger-pointing, no blame.

Family –recognize you’re part of something bigger than yourself, always serve and always protect your teammates.

Habits – consistency is the key to success, every

single day/rep matters, your habits dictate your ceiling.

Joy – enjoy the sport, embrace the process, love each other, be grateful.

Edgemont Wrestling works to develop student-athletes who always strive for excellence, never settling for mediocrity. Success is not defined by victories or defeats but rather by personal growth and the continual effort to reach one’s potential on the mat and off. This mission is accomplished through a rigorous program, exacting standards, and a dedicated coaching staff that embodies these ideals.

YOUTH TEAM

COACHING STAFF COACHING STAFF COACHING STAFF Head Coach Pete Jacobson '96 thinks

COACHING

wrestling is "ok" and freely admits he coaches just for the money. In his seventh season at the helm of the program, his 17th season, overall, coaching wrestling at Edgemont, Pete coordinates much of the program and imparts his vast knowledge through overly-enthusiastic demonstrations, long speeches and questionable jokes. Always ready to wrestle, Pete dares anyone to take him down. Pete graduated from Edgemont in 1996 where he was part of the wrestling program for six years and captained the Varsity Team. He went on join the team at Cornell University (whom Pete is confident will bring home their first NCAA team title this year). In addition to coaching wrestling, Pete's other interests include watching wrestling, reading about wrestling and just wrestling. He relaxes in the off-season by wrestling, coaching club wrestling, attending wrestling camps and clinics and wondering how his amazing wife Katie puts up with all of it. In 2011, Pete took home the Bronze Medal at 69 kg in Freestyle Wrestling, representing the FDNY in the World Police and Fire Games. Pete also enjoys long walks on the beach and is a Pisces. He has been fortunate to have coached 51 All-Section wrestlers, 23 Section Champions, 11 All-State wrestlers and two NY State Champions at Edgemont.

STAFF

Assistant Coach Bill Magner is in his sixth season on the Edgemont Wrestling Coaching staff. Bill is an English teacher at Fordham Preparatory School in the Bronx. Bill teaches and coaches good.

Assistant Coach Brett Pastore is a second-year coach who graduated from Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania. Brett wrestled at Irvington High School, where he won two section titles and placed at states his senior year. In addition to having the most wins in Irvington wrestling history (143), he probably has the most losses, but nobody needs to know that. He is also a substitute teacher, and competes in boxing, kickboxing, mixed martial arts, catch wrestling, and some other stuff. He is also widely regarded as the worst basketball player ever, so it's a good thing he coaches wrestling instead.

Assistant Coach Matt Lee ‘07 enters his seventh season on the Edgemont Wrestling Coaching staff. He is also helps out as a Pee-Wee Wrestling coach. He attended SUNY Stony Brook and Pace University where he received his bachelors in Accounting. While at Edgemont, Matt was a two-time captain, a Section 1 finalist and a NYS Championships qualifier. He plans on receiving his C.P.A. and work in the accounting industry for the near future. Outside of his work, he aspires to become a national level lifter in Olympic Weightlifting, Powerlifting, and Strongman. Please do not ask him how much he benches.

13

COACHING STAFF COACHING STAFF COACHING STAFF Assistant Coach John Marsh enters his ninth season with Edgemont Wrestling. Hailing from Massachusetts, John’s legendary toughness is perhaps best illustrated by his ability to survive in New York as a RED SOX and PATRIOTS fan. He was just as tough on the mat. At New Bedford High School, John was the first to break 100 career wins, first to win Sectionals, States, and All-State Honors. He set two state records for the most pins in the least time in a Sectional and State level competition, pinning all of his opponents in the first period. He was inducted into the Massachusetts Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2010. He continued his wrestling success in college, setting the D-III record for the most wins in a seasonally n with 47. In 2010 he was a New England Conference Champion and Outstanding Wrestler and garnered All-American honors, placing 5th at the NCAA’s. His personal favorite is setting the record for the most takedowns in a season with 138 takedowns. If not for wrestling keeping him on track, he says, he would not have gone to college. Enjoying fitness and keeping himself in shape, he earned his degree in Physical & Health Education, concentrating it Exercise Physiology from Bridgewater State University. He is currently a Personal Trainer at Total Form Fitness in Hartsdale, and trains and competes in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Assistant Coach George DiChiara (a.k.a the resident "old guy on staff") is back in the fold and coaching after an eight year hiatus. He’s thoroughly enjoying working with the program again, and also assisting/collaborating with former wrestlers (some of whom he had the pleasure of coaching during their time in the program). He appreciates being a part of the the continued success of Edgemont Wrestling, the growth of each athlete who participates in this sport, and the impact or difference Coach Jacobson has had on the development of both character and teamwork.

Assistant Coach Tim Hopkins is in his eighth year with the Edgemont Wrestling family. He graduated from Messiah College, where he earned a B.S. in Biology. Wrestling for Messiah's program for four years, he started for three of them, taking 2nd at the Roger Williams Invitational, 5th at the Messiah College Petrofes Invitational, and 5th in the Empire State Conference his senior year. In high school, Tim wrestled for North Rockland, winning his alma mater's Jerry McGuire Tournament and the Joe Radomsky Memorial Tournament and taking 4th in the section his senior year. He hopes to have a positive impact on the lives of the athletes he mentors while with the program.

Assistant Coach Dan Argast is on his third year working with Edgemont Wrestling. Dan wrestled at Fordham Preparatory and played football where Coach Bill Magner was his defensive line coach and English teacher. He went on to wrestle at United States Merchant Marine Academy. After a brief sailing career, He now works shoreside at JFK Airport as an Engineering Project Manager. This message was transcribed by Daniel’s fiance because Coach Magner was not a good English teacher.

Assistant Coach David Rice ‘08 is in his fourth season at his alma mater, Edgemont, where he

14

was a Section Champion and garnered an All-State finish in his final year. He continued his wrestling career at NYU, where he was consistently ranked in the top five nationally his last two years competing. He currently works as a Software Engineer in NYC, showing that computer nerds can be tough too. In his free time, he still grapples, partaking in jiu jitsu, and wrestling as a “has-been” at various mats around the area. One of David's goals at Edgemont is to inspire a work ethic amongst all that compete on the same team that he did, and show that with hard work, anyone can takedown Pete.

COACHING STAFF COACHING STAFF COACHING STAFF Assistant Coach Zak Niazi ‘08 is entering his third season as an Edgemont wrestling coach. He is excited to be able to teach students about the value of discipline and hard work as it relates not only on the mat, but in their professional and personal lives. Zak wrestled at Edgemont High School during the 2006 - 2008 wrestling seasons. He is currently building a Virtual Reality camera out of his apartment in Brooklyn.

Assistant Coach Jedd Chesterson is a proud graduate of Binghamton University and wrestled varsity for Woodlands High school from 8th through 12th Grades (1999-2003). He captained the team from 2001-2003. Jedd is a Spanish teacher at Edgemont High School and is in his tenth season as an Assistant Wrestling Coach at Edgemont. Jedd has also worked as the Boys' Modified Soccer coach for the past nine years. He is passionate about teaching and coaching, and is dedicated to seeing his students and athletes succeed.

Assistant Coach Rob Breitenbach has been coaching wrestling at Edgemont for the past 31 years. He has served as assistant varsity coach twice during that time and in addition to coaching wrestling, he coaches modified football and varsity girls lacrosse at Edgemont. Rob is currently a resident of Yorktown Heights and began his wrestling career at Lakeland High School. Rob was one of a family of brothers who competed for the Hornets and was an integral part Lakeland's only Section Championship in 1981. Rob has 4 children: Nicole, Rob Jr., Lauren, and Elyse. Rob prefers the Beastie Boys to Metallica and is known for his ability to give every one of his wrestlers a nickname. He also enjoys reading and writing romantic poetry and quiet reflection.

Assistant Coach Mike Mitchell starts his eleventh season as the Edgemont High School assistant wrestling coach, having been voted “Best Looking Coach” for the third straight year. Mitchell was a four-time Section IX champion and five-time All Section Place Finisher while at Cornwall High School in Cornwall, NY. He finished his high school career with 144 wins having placed third at the New York State Tournament. His wrestling career continued at the college level, where he was a two-time All-American, two-time NCAA Division II Runner Up, and a two-time NCAA Division II Eastern Regional Champion. Over the course of his time at American International College in Springfield, MA he amassed 124 wins - 62 of which were pins - before becoming a Graduate Assistant Coach for two years. Following that he was an Assistant Coach at the University of Southern Maine for one year. Mitchell earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice and his MBA in Marketing from American International College in Springfield, MA. He is a Senior Lending Consultant for Citibank and lives in Bedford, NY. His proudest accomplishment, however, is his 1998 East Coast Breakdancing title where he defeated Coach Matt Lee (no rhythm).
