When asked to write about curiosity, I asked myself, "Why?" Then I laughed out loud and realized simply asking "why" was the answer. Why is asking, why is being interested, why is being nosy, why is enquiring, why is being curious. It is a thirst to know more, be open to learning, about anything. Being curious can create new possibilities, opportunities and excitement. I've even heard that curiosity in children and adults has been linked to being emotionally, socially, and psychologically healthier and happier. Be curious.

Undecided on how to approach writing about being curious, I decided to walk Lake of the Isles to clear any brain fog and let in the curious. Quickly into my walk, like meditation, my monkey mind set in, literally. My thoughts drifted to my childhood and reading one of my favorite books, Curious George, a monkey so curious about so many things he usually gets into trouble. Good trouble. Then my monkey mind shifted to my grandsons, Everett & Charlie, who are 6 and 8 and two very curious little boys. Last week they proceeded to put on their boots and rain gear and splash in a pond and to see what it was like to be a duck. They splashed around, got wet like ducks, and were very happy, getting into good curious trouble.

Have you ever met someone and wondered, "Why are we supposed to meet?" Does it make you wonder why your paths have crossed? Are you curious whether the connection would still be there if you met at a different time and place? Sometimes we meet people casually and just keep moving with our life, not taking the time or effort to really see them or let them see us. Life is busy. Life is full. Life keeps moving.

But what if we took just a moment to take that breath and ask more? Ask yourself or ask others. Be curious.

A couple of years ago, a woman came in at an event in my Art Gallery, Everett & Charlie, and her energy immediately struck me. I could feel her presence even before seeing her, and I instantly knew we needed to meet. She had the same observation about me. We chatted briefly that perhaps we had met before and laughed that maybe our lives had crossed in another lifetime. Asking questions, I quickly learned this woman was/is a psychic, gifted intuitive, all-around fabulous person, and yes, curious. I'm talking about Kelly Wagner, owner of The Edge Magazine

If I had not taken a moment to ask about her, ignored the energetic pull, been passive, or not had an open mind, so many opportunities would have been missed, such as the pure joy of knowing each other (again) and the magical creation of the Art on The Edge Festival. Be curious.

How Curiosity Saved Me

Children rarely ask what more there is to the world around them. I KNEW there had to be more than my little town. I wasn't raised in a church or with any kind of religion. The only dark-skinned people I saw were on TV. One year, when I was 5 or 6, I asked for a black doll for Christmas. She and my homemade Cabbage Patch doll became best friends and went everywhere with me. It was the beginning of seeking out the "different."

I was different. I had spiritual experiences no one else did. My family dismissed things as my "imagination," but it wasn't. I could see the worlds beyond this one and sense emotions and thoughts. I had dreams become a reality, and because of mental abuse, I was a master of lucid dreaming at a young age. In a rural community, this "weirdness" set me apart. Why, with everything I went through, wasn't I worse off?

Curiosity. I questioned my entire existence for as long as I can remember. At 14 years old, I was researching every major religion. In this digging, I found Wicca. The central theme of "Nature is everything" jarred awake all the "weird," the "different," the Witch parts of me. I began to find myself. There was always this underlying feeling that there was something else out there. I have had so many instances of being told, "You're lucky. Someone was watching over you today" ...no, luck had NOTHING to do with it. It had to do with me being curious about everything about myself and why I am the way I am, which fostered self-awareness, self-awakening, and trust.

Several years ago, I was driving home and was intuitively told to go a certain way. I was also warned I would not get home the way I thought I would, nor when. A deer jumped out. I swerved to miss it, hit black ice, went into a deep ravine, and into the woods. At the end, I heard, "If you had gone any other way, this would have been worse."

There were so many strange but similar happenstances in my life. I trust what I hear as best I can. Sometimes, I get it wrong. But, had I never asked, "Why am I like this?" this door would never have been opened. Had I never asked, I would not have kindled the self-awareness that allows me to navigate CPTSD responses and triggers or the realization that there is more out there to find, to know, to see, and to experience.

FENG SHUI Curiosity Did Not Kill the Cat – or Anyone Else. WITH

The word for “curiosity” in Chinese is hàoqí xīn. The first character (pronounced “how”) stands for good.

The second character “chee” means strange or unusual. The third character “shin” is the word for heart. Altogether, we have an affirmation that being curious has positive and good aspects as well as some unusual and perhaps negative ones. Yet, there is heart in the situation.

Recently my husband and I downsized from our home of 28 years into an active urban community. Many reasons were factored into making this decision to move from a place we loved to a smaller and more manageable place.

Before the move, since I only had a blueprint to work from, I measured each piece of furniture I wanted to bring and measured it against the size of the rooms or the wall based on the blueprint. I could have brought everything from our house and then made decisions. Not only did that feel excessive because I knew not everything would fit, but also it felt disrespectful of my belongings.

I spent a lot of time analyzing the arrangement from a Feng Shui perspective--determining where the exact center was located, making sure I could face the entry to my office, adjusting for challenging directions due to our bed position, creating an entry experience to divert attention from the kitchen and addressing some arguing doors.

Despite these efforts, I was still curious (as in worried) about whether any of my plans and decisions would be a good fit. Curiosity is an unsettling emotion. It’s scary, exciting, exasperating, and sometimes exhausting.

Occasionally, my curiosity was overlaid with playful inquisitiveness, but often it took on panic and despair. I was curious (wary) about the people we would meet. I was curious (concerned) about how our lifestyle could change. I was curious (suspicious) as to how the place would feel and whether it would become as integral in our lives as our house had. Would we love it as much? If not, then what?

I couldn’t help but notice our cat Louie who epitomized curiosity at its best. There were boxes to explore, cupboards he could finally get in, and extra space to wander around as furniture was being sold. Louie embraced curiosity without panic or regrets. Did it always work out for him? No, but he simply moved on. I envied his carefree attitude.

So, my husband and I moved into our place with many forethoughts about what would go where and, for the most part, all that planning worked. I kept curiosity to a minimum because, frankly, it scared me. It felt like curiosity meant no control. I guess I thought it would “kill” me – look what supposedly happens to cats, except for Louie.

There were moments when a curious action had to be implemented to resolve things that didn’t feel right. I had to defer to curiosity. “What if...” and “Let’s try...” became my mottos.

Of course, after our move, everything fell into place –our furniture as well as our lifestyle. Louie had new places to investigate and new ways to manifest his curiosity. I watched him stick his little nose into unknown places –cautious yet fearless. I can see he’s stimulated by these new things – he wasn’t concerned about being “killed” in any sense of the word.

Meanwhile, I’m working to be more like Louie and understand that curiosity has a heart (xīn) after all. a

medicine, lilacs are frequently utilized to help with blood and circulatory disorders. To make tea with lilac, take only the leaves and clean them, put them in boiling water, steep for 3 to 5 minutes, then drink. This bitter tea can help with many ailments like GI issues and help with pain control as it relaxes the muscles. This fragrant tea is also an excellent remedy for mild depression and anxiety.

However, there are other ways to incorporate lilac into your life. Pick the fully bloomed small flowers off the stem to make an infused oil. Make sure only to use the blooming ones, not dried or spent blossoms. Place these in a clean, sterile glass pint jar. Now add your carrier oil, covering the flowers. Cover your jar tightly, and place it in a sunny window. The sun's warmth will instill all the flowers' essence in the oil. Give it a gentle shake daily and let it sit for six weeks. Then strain the flowers out and use your lilac oil to create salves. Lilac salves are great for acne, scarring, minor scrapes, and cuts, and you can find lilac salves at Midwest Witchery and Healing in Stillwater, Minnesota, later in June.

Every spring, when the lilacs bloom, it takes me back to when I was a child. My grandmother's whole backyard was edged with beautiful full lilac bushes. I can remember my cousins and me building forts in the fortress of the lilac bushes and enjoying the fragrant canopy of flowers over our heads. Even though my grandmother's house is no longer standing, these amazing lilacs remain all these years later.

The color of lilacs can vary from white to multicolored, but most are a varying color of purple. They can be found in many neighborhoods edging property lines. People adorn their homes with the fragrant flowers, and they are popular gifts from small children to their moms on Mother's Day. However, did you realize that these flowers are more than just a pretty addition to your yards? The medicinal properties are abundant.

Since the Middle Ages, lilacs (Syringa vulgaris) have been used to help reduce fevers and inflammation, aid digestion, reduce anxiety, and even in beauty regiments. Lilacs are also known for their antibacterial properties.

The essential oils from lilac leaves are the true medicine. However, the flowers also can be used medicinally. In Eastern

Want to make a refreshing drink to soothe and relax you from a stressful day? Make lilac water or lilac lemonade. Lilac water is effortless to make. Add two full lilac floral heads to a quart of water and keep in the refrigerator overnight. To make lilac lemonade, take 1 1/2 cups of freshly squeezed lemon juice, about 7-10 lemons, 1 1/2 cups of sugar, 8 ½ cups of water, ice, and 2-3 heads of lilac blooms. You should drink this for 2 to 3 days only.

You can use lilac as a toner on your tired skin that will help refresh you after a long day! Add wilted lilac flowers to a jar with witch hazel and distilled water. Let it sit in a dry, dark, warm place for two weeks, shaking occasionally. Then strain and place in a spritzer bottle. Refrigerate it after the process is complete. This cool spritz to the face is fragrant and refreshing.

Lilac can even be added to honey and made into syrup for culinary purposes, making your food taste wonderful and giving it a fresh new taste. If you are having GI issues such as flatulence or constipation, eating the clean raw flowers brings more blood flow to your digestive organs to help ease these problems.

As you can see, these gorgeous spring blossoms are a magnificent addition to any herbalist pantry. So, the next time you go for a walk this spring, notice the smell in the air of the lilac blossoms and see what nostalgic memories float into your head. a

Curiosity is the theme of this issue, but it really runs much deeper than that. Being Curious has been an overarching theme of Kelly and my lives, and a large reason for why we realized we had the chops to start publishing this magazine.

Over the past twenty seven years Kelly and I have been living curiously. Exposing ourselves to new spiritual experiences and alternative healing techniques. From shamanic ceremonies in a Mexican cenote to state-of-the-art 'harmonic egg' isolation chambers.

I've really enjoyed putting this issue together, because a lot of the articles feel like they were written specifically for me. I've gained insight and motivation from what I've read. And I hope you will too!

Stages of Faith: Stage 1

My favorite book from graduate school is by James Fowler called, Stages of Faith: The Psychology of Human Development and the Quest for Meaning. I think of his important work often, since he addresses how we get stuck emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually if we don’t work on past issues and traumas.

If you were mentally, emotionally, physically, or sexually abused at a certain age, and then ignore or block out the hurt and pain, you can become developmentally stuck at that age and unable to move forward fully in your life. Your spiritual beliefs can be stuck too, where you may not see the Divine with a full mature viewpoint.

Fowler gives six stages of faith which are important in self-understanding but, with more recent research, we should really be looking at seven stages – including ages 0-2. In the months ahead, I'll be going over each phase separately, since each stage can help us in understanding where we're at with our personal and spiritual growth.

Stage 1 is the preverbal age where trust is developed. If you do not bond with a parent or caregiver, you may have difficulty trusting that the world is a safe place to live in. This may affect your relationships going forward. Because you were preverbal, you couldn’t create a narrative for your challenges which makes it hard to work through today.

If you have moderate to severe difficulties with trust, you may have 0-2 age issues to work through. Because you didn't have the ability to put words to your experiences, you have to work mostly with your emotions to heal yourself.

The emotions will be stored in your body so you want to pay close attention to where your body is holding onto your emotions. Here are examples on how to work with your emotions:

1. If you feel grief, be with the grief and pay attention to where you feel the grief in your body.

2. Once you identify where the grief is held, stay with it and the feelings of grief. For example, if you feel the grief in your heart, keep your focus on your heart. As you stay focused on the grief in your heart, you may get a picture of something that made you sad. As you stay with the picture, you may feel a sense of loneliness and distrust. Staying with these emotions, you may feel it leave from your body.

3. After you finish focusing on your heart and the emotion of grief, loneliness, and distrust, pay attention to your body again. Does your heart feel the same or different than before? You may feel a lower level of grief or it may feel clear now. If you still feel grief, go back to the grief in your heart and stay with it until it feels more neutral.

4. After your heart seems more in balance, pay attention to your body as a whole. Do any other areas stand out as needing more attention? You may notice that your solar plexus/waist feels more tense. Stay with the tension. It may turn into anger or irritation. Stay with the resistance until it clears; it may clear quickly or take a number of days.

5. Keeping a focus on what's going on with your body lets your body know that you're okay, which gives permission to release it.

6. After you're done releasing your emotions, ask to replace them with your own Spirit. This is called a soul retrieval, which creates a positive, permanent change within you.

How does being stuck in Phase 1 affect your spiritual life and beliefs? It may be more difficult to believe there is a higher power there for you. You may feel totally abandoned and wonder if there's

anything that can help you feel better. Anyone can feel this way. But, if a persistent feeling of hopelessness and mistrust never lets up, make sure you find a competent professional to help you recognize you have support in your life.

Remember that anything that has happened to you, at any age throughout your lifespan, is only an experience. You are not your experiences so you can let them go.

You are a Divine Being having a human experience. Because you are a Divine Being, this human existence is but a short journey to experience new, interesting relationships and new, interesting experiences. Make sure you enjoy this very short journey. a

DIESEL A Third Eye Being

As a part of my work with animals, a great joy is helping introduce a new pet to the family. This becomes the foundation for bonding, respect, trust, and mutual understanding. Recently, I had the privilege of working with my colleague, Kelly Wagner, and Diesel, a new rescue English Bulldog, about six years old. A consultation honors the past as well as builds the bridge to becoming a beloved family member.

Initially, I suggested starting with an essential oil that aids in bonding. The essential oil is formulated specifically for pets and is safe for pet use. However, because of some uncertainty about his reaction to a topical application, the essential oil was placed in a pet charm worn by the dog instead.

Consultations may not always be conducted in-person. In such cases, a picture can be helpful. As the saying goes, "A picture is worth a thousand words," and the picture that Kelly sent had a lot to communicate.

Immediately I said, "WOW, he's a Third Eye dog." I've worked with many animals, but very few Third Eye Beings. These Beings are especially spiritual beings, with great insight and expressive natures. They are here to share insights, foster insights and awarenesses, and help reinforce the connection with high energies.

While each Third Eye Being has its own path, they share common traits. Even through his picture, that special energy in Diesel was evident. Providing information about the uniqueness of Third Eye Beings to the family helps with mutual integration and support.

Third Eye skills mature slowly, thus, are seldom noticeable at birth. And it's common for them to be in multiple homes before finding their 'home.' It was slightly different for Diesel. His multiple homes included his birth home, his previous owner's two homes, long stays with her son, and now with Kelly's family. Diesel's joy of being with 'his family' was apparent.

Third Eye Beings are sensitive to the environment and energies around them. Creating a stable base is essential. This base bolsters their ability to interact with the outside world. Significant environmental changes require Third Eyes to adjust, adapt, and blend their energy with each change.

The Original Wound

In the course of my spiritual journey, and especially in helping to guide others on their spiritual paths, I have come across the phenomenon of the original wound and its manifestations. Through the years, I have heard my clients and students voice the effects of the original wound when they say, “I feel something. I just don’t know what it is”, “I feel a sense of emptiness,” or the most common, “I want to put something out of my life.” I have encountered so many who so desperately want to put an experience or feeling in their spiritual basement or attic, but the problem is, it will still be on the property.

What is the original wound?

An event or trauma creates the original wound. It is a wound that the mind and spirit cannot process. The unprocessed pain becomes retained in the aura.

What does it look like?

Evidence of the original wound manifests through spiritual clutter, physical hoarding, people-pleasing and control issues. It may appear as an inability to put ideas and plans into action, unwanted relationship patterns, or drawing the same type of depleting relationships. In other instances, the original wound is found in a disconnection from self, unwanted experiences or lessons repeating what you have already learned, or living in a state of constant recovery while feeling your life is on pause.

Physical manifestations may include eating disorders, fibromyalgia, memory loss, depression, insomnia, or digestive issues. Other symptoms might be autoimmune disorders, hormonal imbalance, bladder/kidney and adrenal issues, feeling foggy, or an inability to focus.

What are some causes?

Events from Childhood

Childhood experiences can turn into limiting belief systems. Some examples include being subjected to any form of child abuse, witnessing unhealthy relationships between family members while growing up, and constantly providing emotional support to mentally or emotionally unstable siblings. These are just a few examples.

Rejection

Rejection from a parent or lover can create an original wound. A relationship, whether parental or intimate, from which we expect acceptance, safety, and love but receive the opposite can cause us to become trapped in a pattern of being drawn to the same type of relationship. We subconsciously try to correct the first trauma only to reopen the original wound.

Loss of a Loved One

For some, the feeling of loss through death, whether expected or unexpected, can cause an original wound. It creates the inability to experience closure or leaves a sense of regret, which results in a very deep illusion of permanent darkness and emptiness, creating an original wound.

Betrayal

Betrayal can create an original wound or reopen an existing original wound as a result of the pain created by the violation of trust from a loved one, intimate partner, or trusted institution.

Narcissistic Abuse

A Creative Interfaith Community

Are you curious about joining a supportive spiritual community? Spirit United is a creative church. We regularly tap into the love of the divine and creativity of our community, led by our ministers and guest presenters. At one of our outdoor Spring Equinox events, I heard the son of a member say, "Wow, Mom! I see why you like it here. This is like a non-church!"

In writing this, I see just how far Spirit United Interfaith Church has come. Who am I? I am Pamela Marko, the lead minister. I was ordained in 2007 and officially became the lead minister on November 11, 2018. I present on the second and fourth Sundays of the month. I flow with what God, or whatever word you use for the Divine, channels through me, including meditation to connect deeply with Spirit.

In May 2018, when our community learned how bad our finances were and how burned out the Council of Stewards was, we were ready to close the doors. The Council went to the community, and the community decided to find a way to stay open.

Joan, our Administrator, said during this time, "Pam, I think you should meet Jan Skogstrom, our founding mother." Jan started Spirit United in 1999. When I did meet her, I heard, "You need to ask Jan if Spirit United is to continue or close. The choice is hers." During our conversation, Jan sat up in her chair, touched my hand, and said, "Bless you." As she sat back, we both realized that wasn't her speaking. She said, "I think you have the answer." It was a blessing that came for Spirit United to continue. Even thinking about it makes me cry. It was so profound.

I shared that experience with the Council and community. We decided to take drastic action

to keep Spirit United active. We ended our salaries, left our location, purchased a tent for my backyard, and began again. After multiple moves and the pandemic shutdown, we went virtual. We began meeting at Holistic Gateway in June, which closed after just three years. This led to our current home, Echo Bodine's New Center in Richfield, Minnesota.

I wanted a tree image to promote our new home. The Drawing "Earth Element Dance" by Michelle Thelen was inspired by a movement meditation led by guest speaker Julie Delene. "Immediately after the service, I created my interpretation of what I felt. It was a quick colorful drawing to get the emotions, feelings onto the canvas. I tried to express the movement I literally felt; the water flowing, the energy moving up and out, my heart expanding, my body flowing and growing like a tree."

Monthly presenter Drake Powe read his emotional poem, which sparked the project "Write a love letter to your own heart." He asked the community "to write or create their own poem or artwork as homework." Members sent in poetry and artwork to share. You can find his poem in the Edge poetry section.
