Signs from the Angels

PEOPLE OFTEN GET impatient when they begin consciously working with angels because they want a big, juicy, explosive first encounter with their angels. If you are someone who is waiting for Archangel Michael to make a 3-D appearance in your room, giant wings ablaze and angel choirs singing in the background, then you may be waiting a while. Though I am a huge fan of big and juicy angel encounters, from the years of doing this work for myself and others, I know that the angels don’t always come through that way.

Patience is required when working with angels, and so is managing your expectations. Those are two big keys in allowing angel messages to come through.

COINCIDENCES Before I teach you the different ways that angels communicate with you, there is one thought that I want you to delete from your consciousness. This thought will absolutely block you from the reality of angels and miracles, so it’s important that you get rid of it once and for all.

The thought is, “That was just a coincidence.”

The angels are master manifestors, and when you begin talking to them, they will do everything in their power to let you know they are real and right there with you.

Your angels send you signs of love, comfort, and even protection all the time, but one of the main reasons you may not have noticed them is because you may have been telling yourself all along that every cool thing that happens to you is “just a coincidence.” This one thought will suck your angel magic dry fast, so get rid of it from here on out.

Let’s reimagine this whole “coincidence” nonsense together. Have you ever turned on the radio and the song that came on had a message in it that was just what you needed to hear? it just seemed to be kismet?

Take a moment now to think of some of the more unexplainable and magical things that have happened to you that you might have written off as coincidences. When you add them all together, they start building a picture that doesn’t seem like coincidence at all. These little things can happen to you daily. They can be large or small, and if you dismiss them, you are missing the golden truth: that you are not alone. Your angels are listening to you, supporting you, and actively helping you whenever and wherever they can.

From now on, know that every so-called coincidence is actually help and support from your angels and the Divine. If you master this one mental shift, your life will open up to a magical world that has been hiding from you in plain sight: the world of the miraculous.

SUBTLE ANGEL SIGNS Angel signs won’t always look like what you might expect them to look like. Sometimes they will be big and loud, but other times they will be subtle and soft. The key to being able to recognize those signs, and to receiving the angels’ love and clear guidance as a result, is to tap into your gut instincts and your subtle senses, also known as your intuition.

We all have intuition, whether we are aware of it or not. Your intuition is like a muscle, and the more you flex it, the greater it grows.

Listening to your intuition and your intuitive senses is the most important skill you can learn in working with angels. Your intuition holds the voice of your soul, your song, and your essence. It’s through your intuition, your thoughts, and your feelings that the angels pass on amazing loving guidance. I don’t want you to miss this guidance, because you could be missing pure gold.

Most people in the West haven’t had much practice in flexing the muscle of their subtle senses, because Western culture tends to place a much heavier emphasis on logic and linear thinking than on intuitive, heart-centered consciousness. We in the

West are so used to over-identifying with our loud, tantrum-like logical mind that we often completely overlook the awesomeness that is our intuition. And when I say “awesome,” I mean awesome!

It takes some practice, but if all you did was slow down and learn to listen to the still, small voice of your heart, instead of that wild pack of wolves in your head, life would go a lot more smoothly.

Soul Whisperer Classes Explore World of Spirit Annette Rugolo, respected worldwide as a transformational teacher, author, speaker, master dowser and environmental healer, is teaching a new class based on her book, Soul Whisperer: Releasing Lost Souls, in which participants learn about the world of spirits and how unwanted spirits can be helped to move on from this dimension.

Rugolo has created both in-person and online classes to help people understand the importance of helping misguided spirits. By creating a safe environment, she helps participants feel safe, allowing them to move from a place of fear to a place of love. She explains why spirits get stuck in this dimension and why they need our help to move on. Topics such as emotional attachments, karma, grief and shock help explain why these energies keep a spirit from moving on to their next level of experience.

Learning how to consciously connect and communicate with spirits is an important aspect of this work, Rugolo says.

Rugolo is offering a 4-week online course meeting on Mondays at 7 p.m. beginning March 2 and concluding March 23. Each webinar session is 90-minutes and participants can attend live or listen to a saved recording. Recorded sessions can be kept and listened to as often as needed.

Open the Heart Mercurial Messages through the Zodiac

BY HEATHER ROAN ROBBINS WHAT DO YOU LOVE? As February begins, affectionate Venus conjuncts intuitive Neptune in sensitive and sentimental Pisces, sextiles profound Pluto, and asks us this question. The Sun and Mercury begin the month in communal Aquarius, Mars in globetrotting Sagittarius, and they ask us to take this question larger: what do we love in the world, and what are we willing to do to support our love? Whether that is koalas or a candidate, a person or country, we’re asked to put our money and time where our sentiment resides.

Mercury enters imaginative Pisces on February 3 and tempts us to dream rather than do until February 7 when Venus enters energizing Aries.

Mars enters industrious Capricorn February 16, encouraging us to gear up. We need to proceed with attention and care as Mercury also stations to turn retrograde February 16 - March 9. We can feel stress as the stars paradoxically ask us to both hurry up and hold still, but we can direct this tension to make progress on unfinished projects and familiar problems.

Aries (Mar. 21-Apr. 19)…Old concerns can bother you as the month begins. Don’t believe these old voices; this just brings up another chance on your evolutionary spiral to heal old doubts. People find you lovable as Venus enters Aries February 7, but as Mercury retrogrades in Pisces February 16, much stirs up behind-the-scenes and within your psyche. Make it a healing moment.

Taurus (Apr. 20-May 20)…Pay attention to the sensitive energy fields between you and your beloved friends. Loan your gentle strength, but do not underestimate what your beloveds are experiencing.

Validate their feelings. Life grows more active after February 16, as Mars enters Capricorn and trines Uranus. Keep action slow and steady rather than bunny-hopping forward and back.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)…Work may be complicated for you this month; nurture it along when the coast is clear, but don’t get caught up in other people’s complications. Hold steady as Mercury retrogrades mid-month; prioritize safety. Renew old contacts and complete unfinished cycles through the end of the month.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)…Find safe and productive ways to be sensitive this month. Use your interpersonal awareness for the benefit of all. Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)…It’s easy for you to become passive and dreamy this month, because there’s so much going on in your psyche and behind-the-scenes; dream away, but don’t get lost. Help stabilize the

energies mid-month; don’t feed reactivity. Your story becomes important later in the month, so share what you’ve learned. Practice empathetic patience February 28.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)…Give yourself room to have your feelings, but get your work done early this month. Impatience collides with mishaps mid-month, so keep your efforts gentle and steady. Research and be vigilant about misunderstandings towards the end of the month.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)…Appreciate the beauty of gentle hearts and the creative process this first week. Don’t take a certain fierceness in your cohorts personally after February 7. Be patient with other people’s snafus mid-month. Good karma returns to you around February 23 as Venus squares Jupiter.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)…Emotions are cranked up this month, and your romantic, creative and family life may sprout complications. Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)…You like your home life simple, but it’s not this month. Feelings get hurt easily, and your usual honesty can ring as tactless.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan.19)…Everyone’s a bit touchy this February, which can slow you down just when you feel the need to progress. Claim Your Light A Pleiadian Message

BY CHRISTINE DAY BELOVED ONES, WE GREET YOU. The timelines that have anchored and stabilized within your Earth have set in motion a new era. These timelines have altered the dimensional settings and have begun to dissolve the experience of illusion, bringing to you another perspective of light consciousness, of Truth.

This vibrational flow of light unveils Truth from the purity held within the timeline, which holds the powerful aspect of consciousness that exists within your resident Universe. This vibrational flow interacts fully within your heart and aligns through the brain cells, creating a fuller connection for the greater potential of a higher consciousness telepathic communion.

A sacred gateway through the timeline has been forged open to allow you to move into another aspect of your self-realization process, so your reconnections to the Higher Realms can be actualized and made manifest. These openings are accessible to all who are actively, consciously engaged on a path of awakening.

All communities that are consciously participating together will experience a profound reset of connection and telepathic communion between individuals. This process of opening to your heart is as natural as breathing. You have achieved this before and you can open up to a remembering process of this level of reconnection to your heart. The energy is here now. A doorway is being held open in the timeline for you to re-experience this process.

FLUIDITY AND FLOW Your heart has a pulse-like movement, and there is a multidimensional fluidity and flow between your heart cells. This flow engages effortlessly within the heartbeat held within the Universe, and this pulse radiates outwards into the magnetic core of Earth and within your heart cells simultaneously.

The Universal light force has begun to arise and flood your planet. As the sun repositioned itself to Earth, the energy of the Sun’s rays transmitted a glowing flow of pure light, bathing everything in its path — the Earth, the natural forces and your own heart cells. The Universal light has created a quickening, a higher vibrational life force to permeate throughout all living things on the planet. A Woman Who Sees Angels

CAROLYN CHILTON CASAS I read about a woman who sees angels, everywhere: two around an older man walking down the street, offering support on either side; a glowing group on a playground, watching over children sprinting about; a luminous being of light whispering into the ear of a forlorn soul resting on a bus bench.

We all have them near us, she says, but they do not interfere unless we ask. So, the asking is the key, I learn.

Since then, more often than not, when I call to my angels, a speedy and clear answer comes. Once we were lost, driving circles in a foreign city, and I remembered to ask.

What is essential is to be in the moment.

Do not look at anything from the past, or what is coming up, or even try to assess the situation right now through the limitation of the ego mind’s misperceptions. Simply be in the moment and open fully to what is in front of you as you align and are guided by your heart’s intuition.

You are being lined up for a perfect flow through a series of energetic events that are about to unfold very shortly on the planet.

The energies were set in place in January to reveal another aspect of the energetic timeline. Maintain a focus within your heart, and allow your sacred consciousness within your heart to enter your awareness.

You must let go and Trust each step of movement in your life. The call is for you to be willing to claim your light and to begin to actively engage within the vastness of your consciousness from the newly opened platform of your heart.

YOUR HEART’S DESIRE There are no real restrictions in your world.

You hold the keys to the unlimited capacity to create your heart’s desire within the vastness of your heart. You are the master of your destiny, and only you can set in motion the changes that you desire. As you consciously claim this Truth by engaging your heart, you activate a wave of light that creates change in the arena of life that you have known previously.

nature can and will shift your experience of living. As you actively engage within this Truth, your Higher Realm connections through your heart are able to magnify.

Your heart is a multidimensional tool — your doorway Home.

Through the further unfolding of the timeline on your Earth plane, you are enabled to interact fully within the multidimensional sphere of Self. The timeline holds the gateway, which opens up the access point to your higher consciousness through your heart.

Your make-up is unique within the collective Universal consciousness. Like a jigsaw piece you complete the sacred mandala of the collective as you consciously and actively engage within your heart. This process is all about you choosing to align your awareness to Truth. You hold the power to create the changes on your planet.

As you individually choose to shift into your unique sacred power, you can come together as a community and collectively create and anchor a higher frequency of light within the multidimensional timeline on Earth on another level.

KERI MANGIS HAS WORN a lot of skins — or roles — as a human in this lifetime. She has studied or taught yoga, Ayurveda, herbal medicine, energy work, aromatherapy and many other healing modalities. She has explored Buddhism, Hinduism, Tantra, Christianity, and other spiritual teachings.

She has been a speaker. Her writing has appeared in Elephant Journal, Urban Howl, The Sunlight Press, Grown and Flown, Rebelle Society, The Good Men Project, Stitch, Literary Mama, and elsewhere. And most recently, she has donned the skins of author and self-publisher.

Her first book, Embodying Soul: A Return to Wholeness, the story of a woman who finds that self-acceptance is the key to joy, launches in the Twin Cities on Valentine’s Day. The Minneapolis-based author spoke with The Edge on what led her to write Embodying Soul, as well as the insights she gleaned during the process.

You began your book in a place often referred to as “the dark night of the soul.” What was taking place at this time in your life?

At the time several ventures of mine had ended — and they ended unceremoniously.

I didn’t really understand why they weren’t working out. I couldn’t quite figure out then what I was supposed to do with what I believed were my skills and talents. There just really wasn’t another direction to go. I exhausted the obvious directions, and the ambitious seeker inside of me really wanted to continue that, finding that next thing, but I had to instead just sit in silence with myself for a period of time. That’s really the place the book was birthed out of, a place

of silence and solitude and letting go of all of the labels and identities that I had craved and attached to and desired for so long.

What eventually sparked the way forward for you?

Once I started writing the stories, I realized how much power there was there and how much healing still remained. I thought that I had healed a lot of my life stories.

That wasn’t true, and that’s really what this journey was about for me — going back into my stories and writing them again and again and again until I could see them more clearly for their purpose and their view and what I learned. That was the way forward, just valuing my own journey instead of disparaging it because I hadn’t arrived somewhere imaginary.

A place that you thought you were going to be at that time in your life.

Right! I mean, I was in my early forties. My husband’s career was taking off and my kids were moving out the house and I was nothing — and that was a really frightening place to be at at that time in my life. I was really lucky to have a lot of guidance and support so that instead of continuing to avoid that dark night, which was what I was doing in the beginning, I went directly into it. A lot of things fell away at that time. A lot of friendships fell away, a lot of opportunities ➤ see EMBODYING SOUL on p. 16

fell away, and it was really hard to not do the things that I loved to do. For five or six years that’s pretty much what I did: rewrite my stories, go back into it, and look at them through all these different perspectives.

The healing that happened was absolutely incredible.

You began to see your life from a different perspective?

I was able to see my life from many different perspectives. First of all, I was better able to see it from other people’s perspectives, those who were involved in the stories, which I hadn’t ever really done before, not to that degree, anyway. I saw how I hurt other people — how I hurt other people sometimes even intentionally — and I was in denial of that part of my own self up until that time. That gave me a great opportunity to do a lot of atonement, a lot of forgiveness work, a lot of compassion work, which led to a greater sense of my own wholeness and our own oneness as human beings.

That’s really what the story of the book is: seeing my own life journey, but not from my ego’s eyes, which were so attached to a straight-line path of success and achievement. I was able to see my life through the eyes of my soul, which looks at my life stories with curiosity and adventure and wonder. It looks at this and looks at that, and it sees what you learned here and there, and it gave me such a beautiful way to look at my own life rather than this startto-finish path. I saw how healing it is and how every story really does guide you right into the next one and the next one. My life suddenly was the hero’s journey.

In your book you talk about your soul, and you actually give her a name, Serene Voyager — known as Sëri in the soul realm — as well as a personality dialogue and a journey all of her own, which progresses alongside her human ego partner. It’s clear that you consider the soul as more than just an abstract concept.

What do you think our souls are and why did you present your soul with such detail?

To me, our soul is our purest, deepest and most essential truth. Our soul inhabits our wholeness. Our soul is the sum total of all that makes us human and alive and animated. Our soul encompasses all of this

and, yet, it’s attached to none of it. When we embody the soul, then we are our fullest self. We understand our weaknesses and our shadows just as easily as we understand our gifts and our strengths. We honor our emotions, the messengers that they are, rather than trying to suppress them or belittle them or ignore them. We follow our intuition and our gut instinct and the guidance of our own bodies. When we are in body we are in our fullest, most complete, self acceptance.

What is your definition of an embodied soul?

Aren’t we all souls living in a human body?

The embodied soul is the part of us that is completely inhabiting every single moment of our lives. There is an incarnation that happens at the beginning of our lifetime where the soul moves into the human body. That happens once. That’s an event.

Embodiment of our soul is a process and a journey — and many people never truly embody their souls. They live completely through their ego self their entire lives. For those of us who do decide to go on any kind of a path of self-acceptance or self-love, we will automatically be embodying more and more pieces of our soul. As we accept more and more of our wholeness, that is soul embodiment.

And that process doesn’t end in terms of bringing in more aspects of our soul?

I don’t think it has an end, not as a lifetime. I think it is a journey. For me, every single day is a practice of embodiment. It is an opportunity to continue to express myself from my wholeness. One of the most essential characteristics of myself that I learned through the writing of this book was my own curiosity, a character in the book named Endless Curiosity. When I am in my curiosity, when I am in a place of wonder about the world and my life, I am in my most joyful, whole and healthy state. When I shove aside my curiosity or decide that my voice isn’t necessary or needed or wanted, then that is when I start to get more wrapped up in what my ego is thinking and feeling and wanting. Both of these things, soul embodiment and ego identification, happen side by side and fluctuate throughout every single one of my days. My intention is to continue to live more and more from the place of soul embodiment and less and less from the place of ego identification.

In our quest for more presence in our lives, there is an emphasis on quieting the mind, on stilling the thoughts. However, your book details a personal inner journey that reveals how emotions often speak the loudest. Why did you give emotions such prominence in your book, and what realization did you have about your emotions and the role they serve in your life?

I love this question. When I started studying yoga and I learned what you’re talking about here, that the process of yoga was about stilling my thoughts and quieting my mind, I took a hammer, essentially, into my mind and for every thought that popped up, I was slamming it back down. That’s what I thought I was supposed to do. I didn’t appreciate the actual nuance of that teaching at the time. I do now.

I had spent so much of my life trying to control my thoughts and be a good girl or be accepted in this way or don’t think that.

I had come from an upbringing where I was already very much in judgment of my own thoughts. The worst thing for me to do was suppress them more at this time in my life.

What I needed to do was start observing them from a place of distance and awareness. Once I started actually listening to my own thoughts, I noticed how busy my mind was, and I was able to name some of the different voices inside my head.

That was very illuminating for me. I think I’ve always felt sort of an inner battle between do I want to do this or do I want this, and what I did in my book was name that: that was from my anger and that was from my fear, and guilt was over here wanting something completely different.

No wonder I felt so confused. Now I have more recognition of those voices, the same way I better recognize my soul. I better recognize my emotions, and our relationship now is a lot more playful and we’re more of a partnership in this life than we are adversarial. They’re actually helpful.

Our emotions are important and they come with messages. They’re not always messages that we are supposed to heed or that we want to heed, but we at least should accept the message and not kill the messenger, right? Because when anger comes to us, there is an injustice, there is a sense of unfairness, there is some kind of a betrayal, there is something here. That anger has a purpose. If we just suppress it and push it back down into our body, it will come out in another way. As you see in

the reader with her vulnerability, creativity, and insight, inspiring us to explore the true depth of our souls to better understand ourselves and one another. This book is sure to infuse more purpose and meaning into your life.”

my book, a lot of my repressed anger came out in the form of chronic hives, these red rashes all over my entire body. So, I had to learn this process. Now I can go back to some of the other practices of quieting and stilling my mind, because I am in a better relationship with my mind and with those thoughts. There is a time and a place for every practice.

The word “authenticity” has become more widely used in recent years and yet sometimes we need authors like you to share what it truly means and how it is revealed in our lives.

What connection does authenticity have with the soul and why is living with authenticity more relevant today than ever?

I think that when we are embodying our soul, that is our authenticity, that is our essential nature, our original self. I actually like the word “original” more than “authentic” because I think of it as something that was original to us when we were born.

When we were children, for most of us, we expressed ourselves pretty freely.

We were in our emotions, we were in our body, we were in our questions. We didn’t yet know that we were supposed to suppress things or quiet this down. As original beings, as children, we were just in this place of wholeness. It was original.

The reason the subtitle of my book is called “A Return to Wholeness” is because I do believe that we all know what that feels like. Authenticity and originality or soul embodiment, whatever term we put on it, isn’t something we need to reach for; it’s something that we return to. It is our essential nature. We do know it and we do know what it feels like. We’re just afraid of it because we were taught as young children to start putting those things away, to grow up, to not cry, to be a big girl, for boys to man up as we got older. We were taught out of our own originality — and the return is just a reclamation.

The Declaration of Independence proclaims the pursuit of happiness as a right for each of us, and yet it seems most of us engage in just that, pursuing happiness. Why do most of us struggle to not only realize it, but to sustain it?

Partially because I think there’s a big difference between happiness and joy. I think happiness is transient. It is momentary pleasure versus joy. In my book, joy is the emotion that I identify as that more lasting state, talking about that more sustained ability to be in any kind of a moment, but just know that there is this sense of wholeness and oneness that is within. Happiness comes from outside of ourselves. Joy comes from within.

So, as long as we continue to pursue happiness, it’s always going to need to be refilled. We’re always going to have to go out

to the next thing and the next thing, versus joy, which is a well that springs from within us. I see joy as being more connected to our souls, therefore more connected to all other beings and the Earth. That’s eternal. That’s a wellspring that can never run dry. From that place of joy, we can explore happiness, but it’s without attachment and need. Now it is with a very healthy state of mind. We can have two bites of a sundae and put the rest down or we can decide we want the whole sundae, but it’s coming from a choice. It’s coming from knowing that there is something deeper within us, that this happiness is temporary.

What was the greatest insight that paved the way to joy in your life?

Knowing that my stories had a purpose and meaning. As we discussed at the beginning, when I started this book and when I was in that dark night of the soul, I lost my sense of meaning and purpose. I felt I had wasted time. All of these ventures had ended prematurely. When they ended, the purpose that I had instilled in that particular path was lost, too. But then, as I was writing my stories I saw this through line of purpose that connected all of what I had seen as disconnected, incomplete, castaway times in my life — wasted time.

That was the motto that I had in my head when I was in the dark night of the soul: “How much of my life have I wasted? Why did I do that? That was wasted time.” And that was a very dark place to be in, to look at your life and think that any of it was wasted.

So, the way to joy for me was to see value and purpose and meaning in every single encounter, and it wasn’t about bringing everything to a natural conclusion. It wasn’t about everything having a bow at the end.

I was a runner when I was in high school

and college and I had the mindset that you start at the starting line and you finish at the finish line. That was a metaphor for me in everything that I did in my life. So, when life wasn’t looking like that as an adult and I was coming off the race midway, for instance, I didn’t know how to wrap my head around that. It seemed like I had failed and disappointed myself — or even worse, disappointed my own soul.

That was one of the questions I came to the book with: “What did my soul think about all of these incompletes in my life?

Was she disappointed?” What I learned was: not at all. This was fun for her. She loved moving through all of these different — what she calls skins — these playful roles. She doesn’t want to just be in one through our entire life. That might not be true for other people. For other people, that may be their path, but for my soul what she really loves is playing in all the different roles and skins. So recently we tried on the skin of self-publisher, and this has been a whole lot of fun. I have a different approach to it now than I’ve had in the past, which is that it may last for two years, it may last for five or it may last the rest of my life, but there is no more attachment to it. It’s just free and more playful. A lot healthier.

Is there a final thought, something we haven’t talked, about that you’d like to leave with our readers?

My final thought is really about self-love and self-acceptance, and how important these things are right now. I came to this through dialoguing with my emotions, through allowing myself to feel completely all that there is to feel, and to accept all that I am feeling as true and as good. I think that there are things in this life that we take too seriously, such as our title, or what kind of car we drive, or what kind of car somebody else drives, or what someone else thinks of us. And then there are things that we don’t take seriously enough, and that is the wisdom from our bodies, the validity of our emotions, and the information available from our instincts.

As we come out of this place of denial and come into more of a place of acceptance, we settle, we ground, and compassion comes more naturally, bravery comes more naturally, and empathy comes more naturally. Living from Your Authentic Self

THE PERMANENT, MORE authentic, part of you did not come to Earth to live from fears and mental limitations, but rather came to become aware of and overcome whatever blocks hold you back. The soul part of you has no fears.

Thus, fears tend to melt away the more we begin to identify with the eternal part of us that we can never separate ourselves from.

Take a moment to imagine what life would be like if you had no fears or self-doubts.

Who or what would you do and be if you had no limiting beliefs holding you back? What would it feel like if you purely lived life from your passions, gifts, strengths and interests — all while knowing that you are a being of pure creative potential that comes from the same Source of love that everyone else does?

For one, you may begin to have compassion for every human being on the planet who is blindly living life from their own subconscious limiting beliefs. You also might notice a feeling of harmony and exuberance. This is what it feels to live from your authentic Self.

No longer believing our self-imposed, limiting thought programs may be considered one of our life purposes. Behind every area that you feel stuck in your life, you’ll find an unconscious false belief that you’re living from. As you dissect these mind programs, you discover that they are not inherent to your core being, but rather you picked them up in your life experiences. Becoming aware of them is the first step in letting them go.

One beautiful example of this is my friend who began college as he turned 40. Although he is one of the wisest, most intelligent people I know, the reason he didn’t start college earlier was due to a subconscious belief that he was too stupid for academia. He picked up that false assumption in his early school years when he struggled with a learning disability, and it wasn’t until his late 30s that he began to see through that false belief with self-reflection. He recently finished his masters in therapy with all A’s and is now an outstanding therapist.

Years ago, when I found myself very anxious before giving a talk, I later went home and mentally dove into that fear to meet it and question it. My subconscious fear was trying to protect me from the audience because of the belief that I might be ridiculed, judged and hurt.

I had to reassure that part of my subconscious mind that it no longer needed to protect me from audiences. Even if there were judgments against me, I could accept a differing viewpoint without being harmed. I thanked my protective impulse, but told it that it was hindering me rather than helping, and it no longer needed to “overwork.” The subconscious fear then began to loosen its grip and dissolve.

It was a lesson for me that we can all reprogram our subconscious minds. It feels a bit

like awakening from a sleep. Living life with negative beliefs feels like trying to run a marathon with heavy armor on. If you have trouble letting them go, there are very effective healing modalities that can help, including hypnotherapy, EFT, EMDR, and QNRT. Noticing our mind programs has a subtle, but powerful, subconscious effect on us. A small distance gets created between us and our mind programs. As that identity gulf widens, it reveals the difference between bondage and liberation. We are not our thoughts. We are that which can observe thoughts, change them and use them. If you don’t consciously use thought, you will unconsciously be used by thought.

Eckhart Tolle writes in his book Stillness Speaks, “The next step in human evolution is to transcend thought. This is now our urgent task. It doesn’t mean not to think anymore, but simply not to be completely identified with thought, possessed by thought.”

As we see through and no longer identify with our limiting mind programs, our “truer” Self shines through — the “more permanent” part of us that can’t be hurt, that never leaves, even at physical death. Simply rest in this expansive aspect of yourself. It is here now. It is who you are, animating your body. The more you bask in this perception shift, the more you will feel whole and complete, and then those beliefs that don’t resonate with the truth of who you are may rise to the surface to be examined and released. The resulting freedom of this has an enormously beneficial effect on your entire being.

Authentic Beauty Spirit Leaves

— T.S. Eliot, The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock RAISED IN THE OLD ENERGIES, I worked to perfect my persona, my mask, my false self.

I was like Eliot’s iconic mock-hero, J. Alfred: articulate and dressed for the part, while inside I feared I might drown at the first hint of real human love. I honed that self-image.

Not surprisingly, I excelled in theatre, a genius and chameleon at taking on fictional roles.

Eventually, I would shift with the new energies, a consciousness that only harmonizes with truth and authenticity.

We enter this human condition as a Divine candle, a mere spark within a vast consciousness of love and light. Reasoning that we are “on our own,” we become dense and fearful, looking outside ourselves for support. Media exploits this fear, creating icons and fashioning ordinary humans into demi-gods, hoping we will worship them and wish to become like them. Our culture has become superficial, placing a high premium upon appearances. We waste a lot of energy trying to fit in, to become like the models touted in ads and videos. Despite our efforts, we come to realize we will never be pretty enough, thin enough, or stylish enough. What we are slow to learn in our hearts, and what many aphorisms affirm, is that real beauty radiates from within.

So, how then do we cultivate the lotus in the mud? First, we must see that lotus through eyes of compassion. Its pink-and-white petals are so tender and beautiful that its initial instinct is to hide in the dark. When it first emerges into the light, all the world laughs, because it is an awkward stalk, dripping in mud. Curling back on itself, it nevertheless persists. Tears of rain wash the muck from its edges. Then one day, in the sparkling sun, it unfolds dew-encrusted petals amid bright green algae-carpeted waters. It opens its heart to the light, and everyone admires and is uplifted by its symmetry and quiet beauty.

That is an apt and ancient metaphor for the soul. Inside us is beauty, love and light; but when we first express that in the world, we may feel rejected by events and relationships that eclipse our light. We may dwell in the dark out of dejection, covering the true self in layers of protection. We may choose to project outwardly a tough, I-can-take-it exterior. That false hubris worked, at least, in the old energies.

What is attractive now is authenticity. Very recently, Cedric remarked to me that the key to living genuinely is to love yourself. It’s easy to think of loving and accepting our friends unconditionally, so why can’t we give ourselves the same loving consideration? Even if we embrace that notion intellectually, how do we arrive there emotionally?

The key is to resolve to be true to yourself in everyday situations. Instead of reacting to events routinely, take a moment to breathe, relax and be genuine. At first, it may feel a little like holding your breath, closing your eyes, and jumping off a cliff. Love Who You Are

MANY OF US LIVE our lives on autopilot.

We exist day to day programmed like an automaton and never consider the choices we have. We let our old habits dominate what we do and what we think. We have walked down the same familiar, well-worn path for so long that we assume this is what life is all about. We unwittingly accept it and do not believe it can be any better or different. We can become so entrenched in our old habits that we do not even realize that we are not living but are only surviving.

If you think about it, many of us have spent the better part of our lives operating based on a series of false beliefs.

These beliefs can make us feel as if we are somehow inadequate. We learned to say and do things to keep the peace and make others happy. But, who is working on making us happy? This task, my friends, is ours and ours alone. Researchers suggest that our ability to be congruent with ourselves and others is linked to our happiness.

When we are congruent with ourselves, our inner world matches our outer world. We are our “authentic self.” Being our authentic self is about reconnecting with who we are. It is about being true to ourselves. It is about having our thoughts (inner world), words, and actions (outer world) match. It is about honoring our feelings and having the confidence to express them. It is about going deep inside and letting go of the false beliefs, which are not serving us any longer.

Individuals who are controlled by their negative programmed false beliefs frequently want to please others over themselves. They also have a hard time being authentic. It can be terrifying to do or say

things that go against the norm, the tried and true. Our ability to be authentic is often challenged in our relationships, where we find ourselves discarding our own wants and needs to make room for what we think others desire. We fear the repercussions of our words and actions. “Will he or she still accept me if I speak my truth?

What will happen if I say no?”

Being authentic allows us to love and accept ourselves at our core, to do what makes us happy, and to follow our passions regardless of who we may disappoint.

Doing so may leave us vulnerable, but at the same time, it allows for the creation of genuine, intimate relationships filled with unconditional love.

What does loving ourselves feel like? It is about treating ourselves with kindness, concern and compassion. It is about not judging ourselves harshly or punishing ourselves for every mistake we make. It is about being warm and understanding, recognizing our inadequacies and imperfections, and responding to them with the same level of support and respect we freely offer others. It is about liking who we are, lock, stock and barrel.

Self-love compels us to act with our best interest in mind and challenges us to ask, “Why not?” As they say, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Imagine the inner strength you will develop as you flex this

One other thing is required to love ourselves. It necessitates that we move beyond our fears. It demands us to have the courage to feel our feelings and honor them, regardless of where they may lead.

We have to be willing to risk showing our true self, complete with all of our imperfections, shortcoming and insecurities when we are our authentic selves. We have to embrace who we are instead of who we think we should be. We also have to be prepared to love ourselves enough to accept the costs and consequences that our words and actions may elicit from others. It might sting in the moment, but in hindsight many come to realize it was the best and smartest thing they ever did. Being authentic creates a foundation where we can begin to experience joy and happiness in all we do, every day of our lives. a DR. Becoming an Authentic Person HERON DIANA WHAT DOES THE authentic self mean?

It is who you are, including your innate wisdom, in your deepest place — in your core. What does it mean to live authentically? It means you must go inward and spend time defining who you are, what you want, how you will act. You must take You seriously.

You will change definitions of what success means, what beauty means, what power means. You must be aware — as often as possible — of the choices you make, the actions you take, your impact on others, and your responses to others and the world around you. You must go from reaction to action. You must become grateful for all you have instead of miserable about what you’ve lost or not acquired. You will ask questions about your spiritual beliefs and connections.

All this must be done to navigate the steps from a non-authentic life to an authentic life.

Why should we look within? For many of us, we yearn for a deeper peace in life that we haven’t been able to achieve — the feeling that life lacks something. Maybe we’re downright miserable. We want mastery with our life, choosing our way instead of running in the dust that life’s race has a way of making us run. Perhaps we want a spiritual connection or a stronger connection.

Here is a secret: you can’t have everything figured out before you take the first step. And, all you need is the desire to take the first step. In fact, desire is the first step. You’ve already discovered that you’re not as happy as you’d like, whether it’s meeting goals or having honest relationships. You’ve already started to go within.

You’ve started to search your soul and have emotional reckoning time. Acknowledge this and feel good about this!

Taking that first step isn’t easy. You may BY

also have discovered that it takes courage to continue down this path. But from this courage you will develop strong emotional and psychological muscles.

How do we continue taking steps? Just keep doing it. If you can’t run, then walk.

If you can’t walk, then take a break. We all need rest stops along the way. Resting is as important as working. Rest stops are good places to learn how to be gentle, to lessen the pressure we are so good at placing on ourselves.

The workout is worth looking at every fear, worth every tear, every stumble and fall that comes from restructuring our lives into the direction of finding our authentic self.

The path of becoming and maintaining our authentic self requires us to discipline our ego, listen to our self, and slow down.

Remember, any skill takes time and maintenance. Learning to live from our authentic selves is a skill learned through consistent attention. Once we start getting the hang of it, the amount of work goes down and the amount of enjoyment and competency goes up.

Wisdom comes in bits and spurts; it doesn’t come all at once at the end of the journey. First off, there is no end to this journey. There is no end to our depth.

Secondly, we become more authentic the stronger we become. The more authentic we become, the wiser we are.

The wise person living an authentic life will always be presented with choices and will understand this. The wise person living an authentic life will know that the outcome of a choice — an action we make — will depend on all the strength and awareness we have at that very moment in life. There are times when we’re not our best. We all slip sometimes. Being authentic in that moment allows us to be easy on ourselves and find our center again.

What do we get from living an authentic life? Self-awareness, self-knowledge and trusting your intuition — knowing your true self. You will act deliberately according to your values and desires, you will respond from your genuine self. These facets of authenticity create a vulnerability to life that is your choice, not your reaction.

Decisions are easier because you respond from your honest self. And when you’re in touch with this part of you, your values are front and center. Accepting Ourselves Completely

BY JOYCE AND BARRY VISSELL An excerpt from Heartfullness: 52 Ways to Open to More Love, written to honor a beloved mentor, Ram Dass, who passed on December 22, 2019

WE ALL HAVE PARTS of ourselves that we prefer to remain hidden. We are all ashamed of certain things we have done or were done to us, or even feelings or thoughts we have had. We imagine that if people knew these things about us, they would not like us, that we would be rejected, abandoned, judged or criticized.

We think we are safe by keeping this shame hidden, but we are far from safe.

Shame kept hidden keeps us from our freedom and happiness. The parts of ourselves that we try to hide are the parts that have the most power over us, because they control us from our subconscious.

Trying to bury our past is really rejecting, abandoning, judging and criticizing parts of ourselves.

On the contrary, when we vulnerably share our shame with another in a safe setting, and this is what Joyce and I strive to create in our workshops and counseling sessions, we actually become more lovable. Our vulnerability in a safe setting opens people’s hearts to us. This is a basic premise for much of our work. And going further, seeing and feeling other’s acceptance of us helps us to accept ourselves more deeply. This is a path toward freedom.

In 1977, Ram Dass, whose books and lectures had helped awaken us to the path of consciousness since 1970, came to live in our community of Santa Cruz while he worked on one of his books. For about two years, Joyce and I, along with a few others, had the wonderful opportunity to be individually counseled by this gifted teacher.

He told us it was important for him to be in direct service to others instead of just locking himself away writing.

It is extremely humbling to admit our spiritual arrogance when we first visited Ram Dass after he moved to town. At that time, Joyce and I dressed all in white and wore sacred mala beads for our intensive meditation practice. We didn’t go to see Ram Dass for help. We didn’t feel we needed help. Instead, we went to see Ram Dass to help him.

We sat at a picnic table in his backyard while he sat opposite us loudly munching on a green apple and gazing at us with those piercing crystal blue eyes. After about a half-hour of putting up with our shenanigans, he interrupted our (well, mostly my) eloquent proselytizing, and announced, “You guys have just given me a headache. You really need help. agree to see you each individually while I’m working on this new book. Your energy together is too much for me to take. You’re both, mostly you Barry, ‘phony holy.’”

So much for our helping Ram Dass. We left that day humbled to our roots, and then began what became a two-year intensive training that pulled the proverbial rug out from under us, spilling all of our righteous beliefs about ourselves, and helping us integrate true spirituality.

One of my visits happened to coincide with Halloween, which triggered some old memories from my childhood. I told Ram Dass about my childhood obsession with monsters. I had watched every monster movie that came out, read monster stories and played monster games at night, delighting in scaring my friends with my various expert monster sounds. One night, while my parents were next door at the Cooper’s house, they heard a loud roar and scream coming from outside. Upset, the Coopers asked what had happened.

My mom casually remarked, “Oh, that’s just Barry playing his monster games.”

Yes, part of all this was perhaps innocent, but there was another part that was shameful to me, that I hid and didn’t tell anyone but Joyce. It was my cruelty, the ways I took out my anger that hurt others, that was particularly shameful. Ram Dass listened compassionately as I bared my soul to him. Then he asked me to close my eyes and feel this shameful part of myself as deeply as I could. While I did so, he secretly reached down beside his chair into a bag and quietly pulled out a mask that he planned to wear that evening for Halloween. By “coincidence” it just happened to be a full-head, very realistic, hideous-looking monster mask. He slipped it on and then asked me to open my eyes.

I was in a very vulnerable state when I opened my eyes and, unlike a traditional therapist, Ram Dass was sitting with his face perhaps two feet from mine.

The scene was surreal. There was this grotesque life-like face immediately in front of me, my complete projection of the cruel monster inside of me, scary beyond belief. In my vulnerable trance state, I was sitting in front of a real monster.

And then I noticed the eyes through the mask. There was no cruelty there, only compassion and love pouring out to me.

The combination was so incongruous that I felt an acceptance of the monster part of me, and especially the pain and anger that was behind it. Then I started laughing. Ram Dass looked strangely cute with the mask but, more importantly, I felt the cuteness of my own inner monster persona. Not that my cruelty was cute, but that I was cute, and thus could more deeply forgive myself for the actions that hurt others.

This is the heart of self-acceptance.

Behind our shame is our pain, and behind the pain is the precious, innocent child who deserves love. When we touch upon this precious child inside ourselves, we more easily accept the shameful parts. And this brings freedom — and peace. a
