Follow your inner ‘Yes!’ from the editor by Tim Miejan

most of us don’t check inwardly with ourselves on a regular basis to determine our best way forward, despite the fact that every person alive has a Higher Self — that eternal, divine part of us that knows exactly what is ideal for us in the present moment. And, most of us don’t go inwardly often enough to ask for divine assistance, despite the fact that every person alive has a team of supportive, energetic beings of light who assist us as we navigate the inevitable challenges of life. It’s no wonder we find ourselves suffering so. Here we are, sacred beings from a dimension of love who have chosen to inhabit a thirddimensional spaceship known as the human body, and we all have two hotlines of soul support built in — but we either don’t believe in them, don’t trust them or forget we have them. It’s like having a cellphone at the ready during an emergency, but we choose not to call 911… because we don’t trust that it will really help us? The history of humanity contains millions of anecdotes that testify to the infallibility of divine support [read Anne Archer Butcher’s account of her rescue after asking for help on page 16], and yet we consistently put more credence in the negative thoughts that churn in our minds. Our evolution forward entails living in the present moment [read selections on our featured topic on pages 18-22, and many more online at] and linking with our Higher Selves and energetic support teams while doing so. My intention for writing these words is less about urging you to do something than in helping myself remember my intended path. We all find ourselves at times forgetting that we are not alone, and I certainly am no exception. I am reminded of the wisdom of spiritual teacher and channel Michele Mayama, who for years has encouraged us to live authentically by checking inwardly for a definite “yes” or “no” — in all matters, not just when we find ourselves at a major crossroads in our life — and following the path of the “yes.” I received one such “yes” last year at this time when I was chatting with Paulette Hastings with Neuro Strength at the Minneapolis Edge Life Expo [she returns there Nov. 2-3 in booth 6]. Neuro Strength’s Brainwave Optimization™ process just makes so much sense to me. I liken it to defragmenting a computer to get it running smoothly and more effectively. Neuro Strength’s process

allows the brain to observe itself in a state of harmony and encourages it to create new neural pathways to maintain that sense of balance. So I listened to my inner “yes” and took part in sessions to optimize my brain. A month later, I can attest that the process has cleared out negative patterns in my thinking and it has inspired me to follow creative and spiritual pursuits that, over time, have been put on the back burner. I don’t think it was a coincidence that my Neuro Strength experience was followed by three days of self-empowerment taught by spiritual teacher Christine Day. That experience has been inspirational in teaching me how to strengthen my energetic connection not only with my Higher Self, but with the teams of spiritual beings who offer constant support. Back in the 1990s, I was one of millions of readers inspired by James Redfield’s book, The Celestine Prophecy. In it, characters followed synchronicities that appeared in their everyday lives and led them to the next step in their spiritual journey. Now, two decades after the publication of that book, a growing number of people are embodying the Celestine way. We are choosing to be present, we connect inwardly and make use of our innate systems of energetic support, and we are following the bread crumbs of synchronicity that show up in our lives. We are being led down a path of love and genuineness, and each of us is flanked by a legion of beings who are cheering our every step. a Tim Miejan is editor and co-publisher of The Edge. Six ways to resist the trap of overabundance, and create traditions with gratitude

Rochester center sponsors yoga intensive in India Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Delhi, India, will be the site of an intense, seven-week, level 1, 200-hour, residential yoga teacher training course, beginning in January 2014. This world-class training will be taught by Dr. Ramesh Bijlani and Debiprasad Pramanick. The inspiration behind the course is the integral philosophy of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother. About 100 years ago, Sri Aurobindo worked out a very powerful synthesis of all the major traditional schools of yoga, and the Mother demonstrated how the path of yoga can be walked every minute of life while living in the real world. The objective of the course is to prepare qualified and competent yoga teachers to teach yoga in tune with the integral yoga of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother. Training will be in English and is limited to 20 students. Dr. Ramesh Bijlani is a medical doctor, writer and teacher. In 1992, he began studying the integral yoga of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother. Mr. Debiprasad Pramanick has been associated with Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Delhi since 2002. For additional information, please send an email to: mbkres@ a

Are you dreading it, already? You know…the whole shopping-gifting-cookingcleaning-eating-drinking-socializing-relatives-traveling season just ahead? From Thanksgiving to New Year’s, many of us get trapped in a cycle of overabundance — the state of having too much. As in: more than we can use. More than we can process. The cup not just full, but overflowing. It’s gotten worse in recent years, starting with Christmas decorations that go on display at Halloween to the frenzy of Black Friday. We’ve become a culture of excess and a society of waste, moving from the next new thing to the next — without ever taking the time to enjoy any of it. We have so much, and it’s arriving so fast, that we can’t use or even experience it all. This overabundance — having more than we really need — creates stress, lowers vibration and zaps energy from mind, body and spirit. Now, I’m all for abundance! I’m certainly not one to pass up on anything that brings pleasure or beauty or connection to my life. But when we become trapped in the cycle of overabundance — the endless circle of want, get, want, get — our lives fall out of balance. During the holidays, overabundance shows up in different forms. It’s not just eating rich foods or excessive gifts, as you’d expect, but less obvious ways as well, including: too much socializing, complex family relationships, rigid tradition and low vibration group thought. Here are six areas where overabundance can create stress in your life: • Overabundance of food — Rich, sweet, fatty holiday food lowers your physical vibration, which affects mind and spirit, too. If you work in an office or with a group of people, it’s hard to escape the sweets in the break room! Alcohol from frequent social events adds to this mix. Don’t worry about weight gain — instead, be focused on the energetic signature of the food you eat. Is it processed? Will it make you feel good? Does your body really want it? Pay attention, and don’t let the season of indulgence lower your vibration. • Overabundance of gifts — The cycle of shopping, buying, wrapping, giving receiving can be very stressful, even if budget is not a concern. The sheer energetic reality of involving ourselves with objects or “stuff” can be overwhelming, especially when we understand that every object has its own frequency, vibration or energetic signature depending on where it came from, how it was made, who made it and so forth. This is a lot of

new energy to add to your reality! Consider your energy as you decide how or if you will give and receive gifts this year. Consider your energy if you decide to do without, do less or give experiences or to charity instead. Once you break the gift cycle, you will be surprised how free you feel. • Overabundance of socializing — Office parties, school events, the annual party you’ve gone to every year for ten years…all of this has a certain clamor of “must attend” attached to it, when in reality, you can change plans, opt out or do something different. Don’t rely on what you’ve always done — you’re a new person now, and you may want to try something different. Reassess every year. Introverts especially may need lots of private time during this season; give yourself the gift of quiet and solitude. • Overabundance of family relationships — There’s that saying: you can’t go home again. And yet every holiday season, most of us continue to swim up river to our birthing place. Many times, the wounds, past hurts and misunderstandings are still there. And because we’re so busy during the holidays, we don’t have time to work on our relationships with our family members. Understand that family karma complex, and the stress of the holidays makes it more so. Be gentle with yourself and others. Have an exit strategy if things go awry. If it’s just too much, opt out and try again another time. • Overabundance of tradition — Just because you’ve always done it a certain way, doesn’t mean you have to do it that way now. This might include: going to a certain event, party, gathering, church service. Wearing certain clothes, decorating a certain way, eating certain foods, being with certain people, and so on. Break free from the rigid traditions your family has “always done” and see what else the Universe might have up its sleeve for you and yours! • Overabundance of group thought — Understand the power of group thought or collective soul to affect your mood. We’ve all seen what fear-based beliefs can do to collective thought: hate, violence, financial ruin and war are all products of low vibration thinking. During the holidays, mindless consumption is the culprit: everyone is stressing out on want, get, want, get. This creates enormous stress, and when this is done in the collective, everyone feels it. During this time, connect to your own higher self, God-DivineSource, frequently and deeply. Use Thanksgiving and Solstice as markers for the season — times when you can easily dip into gratitude and joy. a Sara Wiseman — a spiritual teacher and intuitive — is the author of six insightful books on spirituality and intuition, including her new book, Living a Life of Gratitude: Your Journey to Grace, Joy and Healing. Peace is possible — within reach, wholly attainable, but only if we truly hunger for it, if we decide it is important — more important than money, more important than technological advance or scientific progress, more important than leisure…. How can Peace not be more important? How can we not insist upon it? How do we let ourselves be persuaded that violence, death and destruction are inevitable? Who wants war when there can be Peace? How can we allow even one precious day be wasted on hatred? Think Peace. Breathe Peace. Feel Peace. Speak Peace. Dream Peace. Declare

Peace. Love Peace. Give peace to anyone and everyone you touch, and keep passing it on. Decide Peace…Peace as essential, Peace as imperative, and keep passing it on, for it will be a worldwide movement. And when the global villagers have decided for Peace, there will be Peace, and it will have been so easy, and we will marvel that it took so long and that we took it for granted when it was so natural and easy, and yet it will forever be mankind’s greatest achievement — Peace. a Tim Hulst writes for world peace and believes using one’s talents and resources is the key to personal fulfillment, spiritual growth and a better more peaceful world. Holistic Moms Network offers support in the Twin Cities An interview with Laura Calbone and Carrie Stephens, of the local chapter by Tim Miejan Surveys consistently tell us that women make most day-to-day decisions in the household — and over time those choices are becoming more holistic. A national non-profit organization to support moms in making choices on health and holistic living was launched 10 years ago, and now the Holistic Moms Network (HMN) supports more than 120 chapters across the country and thousands of moms — and some dads and other caregivers. HMN supports informed consent for vaccinations, women’s rights to natural childbirth, living without chemicals in foods, green choices in the home, promotes breastfeeding and produces the Natural Living Conference, now in its 10th year, to support the leading voices in natural living and parenting. Nancy Massotto, founder and director of the Holistic Moms Network, is a recognized expert in the field of green and natural living and parenting. She holds a Ph.D. in government and politics and her professional background is based within the research, natural health, familial education and academic areas in which she has excelled for the past three decades. “The mission of the Holistic Moms Network is to raise awareness for natural living choices and to empower people with practical information they can use to live greener and healthier,” Dr. Massotto says. The Twin Cities chapter of HMN, established in 2007 by Sara Grochowski and Jen Zotalis, is now being led by two moms who are committed to spreading the word that women who make holistic choices for their children and parents have their support. Laura Calbone of Bloomington, a mother of two children, and Carrie Stephens of Richfield, a mother of one child with another on the way, are the new chapter leaders. “Holistic parenting is understanding we are all part of a collective of a much bigger picture,” Carrie Stephens says. “We teach our children to be respectful and create a positive impact on all living things where we

about how they promote holistic living. What challenges face women today who could potentially be helped by the Holistic Moms Network? Laura Calbone: First of all, there are

Carrie Stephens, left, and Laura Calbone. The Twin Cities chapter of Holistic Moms Network meets from 7-9 p.m. on the third Wednesday of every month at Fuller Park Recreation Center, 4800 Grand Ave. S., Minneapolis. can all thrive.”  Local meetings include guest speakers and time for members to share tips and ideas with each other on a wide variety of holistic and environmental topics. Members also can buy natural products at wholesale prices through the Frontier Natural Products Co-op, and the group is considering the option of buying bulk and natural foods through Azure Standard. Meeting topics have included essential oils, organic gardening and composting, tips for being more environmentally friendly, and living a holistic style on a budget — and coming topics include options for sending your child to school (Waldorf, Montessori, public education), a potluck with the sharing of healthy recipes, and a candlelight yoga session to bring in the new year, “In November,” says co-leader Laura Calbone, “we will be talking about overcoming challenges with partners and friends regarding holistic lifestyle choices. Maybe your partner or family members aren’t completely supportive of the choices you are making, so how do you work with them and talk with them so you have a positive relationship and interaction with them, especially as the holidays are approaching?” The leaders of the Twin Cities chapter of Holistic Moms Network spoke with The Edge

the health aspects — not only keeping yourself healthy, but also keeping your family members healthy. Today, there is a wide variety of choices available, which is wonderful, but I think people aren’t completely aware of all the choices or need a more thorough understanding of the different choices — for example, alternative medicines. What else is available to treat illnesses or conditions? When our group gets together, we talk about the challenges we are having in keeping our family healthy — or in keeping our family more environmentally conscious — and we share possible solutions that we can use. We learn from each other, and we also invite guest speakers who are experts in a variety of fields to come in and give us more information about that. It’s about making your family healthier in more holistic ways — more in tune with the environment and with nature.

Carrie Stephens: As a community, all chal-

lenges facing women today are supported by Holistic Moms Network. It’s so easy to get lost in our fast-paced, busy world without making connections with other parents. Holistic Moms Network helps families find the support, share knowledge, and create long-lasting friendships with other like-minded families. It is through these connections we find the ability to face these challenges.

What led you to Holistic Moms Network? Laura: I’ve always been an environmentalist,

and I used to do a lot of volunteer work with the Sierra Club, so that was one aspect of it. The other aspect was that I personally had some experience with a health condition when I was in college. The only recommendations the doctors came up with were medications with adverse side-effects, and I wasn’t interested in those side-effects or the medication. I ended up going to a Naturopathic doctor, and in working with her, she solved my issues with a change in diet and incorporating exercise. Then I became a really strong believer in alternative healing and preventative care. I became a mother and wanted to incorporate all of these ideas in raising my Moms continued on page 12 

November 2013   the edge

 Moms continued from page 10 children. I found this organization, joined and I’ve been a member for a few years now. I love going to the meetings. I always learn something, and I always leave feeling energized, because I am surrounded by other people who care about the things I care about. They are very knowledgeable. There is always somebody there who knows more about something than I do, and I always learn from them. It just feels good to be around other people people who are supportive of these things. Carrie: My holistic perspective did not start until much later in life. My sister became interested in some green living and holistic ideas and tried to rub them off on me. At that time, the ideas did not sink in as much as they do now. After I became a parent, I understood her point of view and respected her more than I can ever say here. I did an internet search and came across the Holistic Moms Network website one day. The topic of vaccinations was a bit of a warm one in my household. I had so manyconcerns and kept coming across more and more information that led me toward not vaccinating our daughter. I was not finding any support in this decision and wanted to find someone else who felt the same way. It was through this group that I received a tip about a class on the subject. I took my husband with me to this class, and we both learned a lot.  We now have found common ground on the subject.  There have been times where I have felt very isolated from other parents in making parenting decisions. After attending a few meetings and becoming a member, I have realized you don’t need to

feel so isolated. The group has really made me feel more confident as a parent.  I can only thank them for that. Aside from growing its membership, what other goals do you have for your chapter? Laura: We share the goals of all of the

Holistic Moms chapters. We want to make sure that people who come to our meetings feel comfortable, no matter where they are on their holistic journey or their parenting journey. For those women who’ve just had a baby, or are pregnant and haven’t had a baby yet, or even grandparents or caregivers — you don’t have to be a mom with children of a certain age — we want to be an open, inviting, supportive community that recognizes that everyone’s going to have different choices that they make for their family, and that’s OK. We just want people to have information to make the best decision for their families. A testimonial on the Holistic Moms Network website [] from one member indicated that she now felt comfortable coming out of the closet regarding her holistic lifestyle choices. Is there a stigma about being holistic that you’ve experienced? Laura: I definitely think so. I found it person-

ally. Other parenting groups that I’m a part of are supportive in a lot of ways, but not necessarily holistically. For example, when we go to someone’s house for a play date or something, and they’re serving Goldfish® crackers and Oreo cookies, I’m thinking, “Well, we really don’t eat that.” It feels uncomfortable, and I might go along with it, thinking, “Well, it’s just this one time. It’s not the end of the world.” You don’t want to be the only parent who hands out, for example, organic suckers or fruit on Halloween. A lot of members don’t vaccinate their

children, and that’s a hot topic in the press these days. A lot of mainstream parents think, “Why are you being difficult about this?” There are a lot of topics where we have a difference of opinion. Even with organic food, I’ve found where some of my friends are like, “That’s just ridiculous.” For me, it’s like, “Well, I think it’s important.”

How does the Holistic Moms Network compare with mainstream parenting groups you’ve been a part of? Carrie: Mainstream parent groups are more

like play dates with some brief parent interaction. It is harder to connect with other parents in this manner due to our attention being drawn to watch over the children. Plus, everyone has a different style of parenting.  It seems very hard to talk about many topics with mainstream groups, as there is always the fear of offending someone. At the Holistic Moms Network, we are a support network for parents who are interested in many aspects of green living and holistic health. We want to learn from each other and are not afraid of embracing some of the more controversial topics. No one judges me if an idea doesn’t work for my family. We all want to be open-minded that way. Is there a spiritual component to Holistic Moms Network? Laura: Yes, holistic living is the whole self.

You look at the physical, mental, emotional and the spiritual. I haven’t been to a local meeting that has covered a spiritual topic, but that’s something we would definitely be open to. a Tim Miejan is editor and co-publisher of The Edge magazine. Do as ye Will: Part 2 - Right, Wrong, Reintegration Evolutionary Pagan by Briana Crusan

Last month I raised the question: What do we stand to gain as a magical community by being inclusive to convicts? How do we assist them in integrating into our ranks? Do we have or need protocols to ensure safety of the general population? I went onto Facebook and asked for feedback. People join spiritual communities to enrich their lives, renew their souls and recover a sense of wholeness that is often lost with trauma. I would like to think that Pagans, as a community, are inclusive and compassionate. I know that there are a lot of people in recovery who seek spiritual guidance and transformation from the Pagan community. I wondered if my readers would see a parallel. The general input I received ranged from “I have no idea” to “don’t put yourself in harm’s way” to “we need to show compassion” to “what about when someone within the community is victimized?” There is no easy answer, and for my particular circle, we may have never been confronted with this situation before. Questions lead to more questions; this is why we leave it up to the judicial system to sort it out in the first place.

How can any community sort out what is right and what is wrong when you live in a society that sanctions murder, the sale of drugs, theft and slavery under certain circumstances, but not in others? Our judicial system is not based on right or wrong, but adherence to rules and regulations designed to mitigate social ills and the flow of currency. If paid military are sanctioned to take lives, but civilians are not, then the underlying message is this: “It’s only a crime if no one or the wrong people profit off it.” Why else would there be heavier penalties for selling pot than for vehicular homicide, and call imprisonment “paying your debt to society?” I know many people who would look kindly on someone who had a felony for marijuana possession, because they think the laws around possession are ridiculous. However, when talking about someone who has a rape or murder charge, the idea of being inclusive becomes a lot harder to swallow. The judicial system is compartmentalized with lists and institutions, guidelines and protocols at the front end of conviction, making gray circumstances appear black and white. But there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to release and integration. Each situation has to be taken on a case-by-case basis, despite the label a person carries. One friend said that the crime would dictate how hard that 

person had to work in order to earn her trust. But what if that person claimed to be falsely accused and all you had to go on was their word? For my friend, a sticking point would be on their attitude. Do they take responsibility for the situation or sit back and blame the system? Are they acting according to their own free will with positive intention? Or are they stuck in a victim mentality where the whole world is against them? Upon release from prison, each individual must confront how their situation has done harm, how they can redress that harm and whether they are willing to summon the courage to plunge forward into a hostile society in order to do it. We are a society of labels: black, white, slender, fat, gay, straight, rich, poor. We place labels to make identification easy, but generalizations are also dehumanizing. It’s important to remember that not all people in prison are guilty, not all those who are guilty are beyond living good lives, and not all who are on the “outside” are innocent. It is up to each individual to assess potential harm and act accordingly. In conclusion, “An it harm none, do as ye will” boils down to this: Nothing ventured is nothing gained. Life is full of risk, gray areas and difficult decisions. When it comes to interacting with people inside the prison system, is the risk worth it? For all I know, I may discover allies I never knew existed. a Briana Crusan is a second generation New Age Pagan Spiritualist, Poet and Massage Therapist. November horoscope: Transform with insight Star Wisdom by DK Brainard

The Scorpio solar eclipse on November 3 is an incredibly powerful event that resonates throughout the month. This gives us the opportunity to identify and transform deep psychological patterns that block us from experiencing intimacy and union. Mercury returns to direct motion on November 10, providing us with additional insight and restoring some semblance of normalcy! Aries (Mar. 21-Apr. 19)…Some of what you see about yourself is going to shock you. Turns out all those conflicts, the frustration, the apparent lack — it’s all emanating from within you. So how are you going to take this? As further evidence you don’t deserve success and joy? Or with a huge sigh of relief, knowing you can change your inner reality? Taurus (Apr. 20-May 20)…You’re being challenged to become the authority in your relationships and the choices you make now will influence your life for years to come. This isn’t about dictating to others how they must behave. It’s about learning to be authentically vulnerable: getting clear on what you need, and learning to communicate your needs honestly and without aggression. Gemini (May 21-June 20)…A situation involving your job, health or energy challenges you to make a big breakthrough in self-understanding. The root energy underlying this situation stems from feelings you are “not allowed to feel.” Once you accept that these feelings are valid merely because they are there, you can finally express them and tap into a new level of willpower. Cancer (June 21-July 22)…Life, by nature, is both creative and abundant. You tend to pour

a lot of your creativity and abundance into your relationships — and that’s beautiful. But when your need to care for others chokes off your own joy, you have removed yourself from the flow of the Life Force. Do unto yourself as you would do to others.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)…You have so much natural energy, but in order to turn it into wealth, you must learn to channel it. November challenges you to acknowledge just how powerfully a parent (or your family) frightened and shamed you out of using your Will to create what you want in life. This is a psychological showdown between your inner child and your internalized parent(s). Only one of you walks out alive. Who’s it gonna be? Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)…Think in terms of efficiency. You wouldn’t tolerate a messy desk or chaotic environment slowing you down at work. So why would you habitually tolerate those negative, self-critical thoughts? Treat your mental space as you would your physical space. Use your cardinal virtue of discrimination to identify and clean up the thought patterns that bog you down. Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)…You are not your mom or dad. Your parents can’t live your life for you, nor would you want them to. Yet, their fears must continue to control your income and limit your selfesteem as long as you remain unaware of them. Use every thought of scarcity or unworthiness this month to root out where you’ve internalized a parent’s failings. This is the key to the abundance you seek. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)…The ultra-powerful eclipse on November 3 mandates a new beginning. You know that “thoughts become things” — this month’s energy shows you precisely how your thoughts are either driving you towards the life you want or pushing your destiny away from you.

Make a sacred vow that you will do what it takes to become the author of your life.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)…We all tend to sabotage our best intentions — it’s what we’re trained to do. You get the chance to see this mechanism so clearly now. If you’re willing to face the places inside you that don’t want you to succeed, you can step into a whole new level of success — and money. Be willing. Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)…You’re luckier than you realize this month; in fact, if you could just see yourself through the eyes of the many people who look up to you, you might allow yourself to really go for it. It’s time to put an old belief about your worthiness out to pasture and claim what you want out of life. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)…If you’re not happy with your public role, you need to change either what you’re doing with your life or how you’re doing it. The Universe wants you to do your special thing, the thing no one else can do the way you can. The Universe will support you, too — as soon as you stop telling yourself it can’t happen. Pisces (Feb. 19-Mar. 20)…Your soul mission is simply what you most long to create, accomplish or experience. It’s time to stop standing around waiting for permission to get started on your life. You need to be ruthless this month. Make some firm choices. And then relentlessly expose those voices in your head that tell you that you can’t trust your direction, your intuition and your inner guidance. a D.K. by Gabriele Uhlein “Paint one brushstroke at a time…” How can something so simple be so hard? Another bit of advice: “When you don’t know what to paint, keep the brush moving!” Sounds crazy, yet those bits reconnected me to the exhilaration of intuitive creativity. First, flash back to your 4-year-old self, or perhaps, yourself in third grade. You have vigorously put crayons through their paces and you’re enjoying happy results. You may have heard someone say, “Here, let me show you how to do it….” Or you might have heard, “That’s really great, what an artist you are!” Others heard some variation on the perennial, “Can’t you just color in the lines, honey…” or, “That’s so nice! Could you do one for me, too?” There is always one you take most to heart. Here’s mine, recalled from art class: “Make it worth the canvas it’s on!” Still today, place blank paper in front of me, hand me some paints or a pen, and 10,000 versions of those judgments rush to limit what I make or write. I thought, “This is normal. Don’t artists need assessment and critique? Wasn’t an artist’s purpose to produce good work, convey deep meaning and skillfully manage technique?” Here’s what I know now. I had traded natural soulfulness, joy and creativity for product, meaning and control. Michele Cassou, the great pioneer of intuitive painting, calls this dreaded threesome “dragons of our own making” — limiting ease of expression, and constricting natural creative flow. She reminds us that we actually reinforce and feed these “dragons” with judgment-based habits of mind until we literally can’t make a mark. She tells her students, “Creative blocks don’t just happen to us. We actually participate in their creation.” Then she asks passionately: “Isn’t that great news?” Usually her students groan in self-recognition. Paint continued on page 16 

 Paint continued from page 15   After years of struggle, and being judged to have little talent, Michele tells how she went to paint with little children, imitating their zest, their willingness to risk, their innocent courage to paint directly what they know in the only way they know how. For almost 40 years she has been sharing what those children taught her. She calls her approach “painting from Point Zero,” that unconditioned place free from learned habits of judgment, and unencumbered by the constrictions of product, meaning and control. I call it painting from Soul, from that place where images originate, dreams unfold, and the numinous divine reveals itself. But more than a place to paint from, I find what Michele calls Point Zero a desirable place to live from. As a long-time meditator and spiritual director, I often quip that a day in the studio painting without product, meaning and control is worth a week on a cushion or a couch! Isn’t the point of spiritual practice a process of getting beyond the limited and conditioned — to be in the moment, fresh and joyfully at ease? I yearn to be able to risk the mysterious and unknown, that not-yet-seen, the only-now-unfolding, ever fresh place where God lures me back to my whole, true, compassionate self. I am never the same after a session of painting from intuition, as freely and as honestly as I can. For the record, I still can paint for product, and I still can please editors — but now I know the difference, and what a soulful, original difference it has made. Process painting or intuitive painting hones contemplative presence and invites insight to arise. If you’re brave enough to look your ego in the eye, if you long to swim in the deep waters of holy integrity, or just have fun (What a thought!), simply stand in front of a blank piece of paper, brush in hand and 20 open pots of paint at the ready. Declare a judgmentfree zone, and fiercely protect it — mostly from your own habits of mind. Without plan, without regard for product, meaning and control, dare yourself to paint whatever wants to be painted. Remind yourself there is no need to like what you paint. Paint no matter what. Happily let moment-to-moment experience guide you. Sometimes it’s dragons you meet. Sometimes it’s God. I know. You’ll find me there as often as I can. a Gabriele Uhlein, OSF, Ph.D. has many years’ experience in the contemplative practice of mandala-making and has trained in the intuitive painting method of Michele Cassou’s Point Zero. A long-time student of both Centering Prayer and Eastern meditation, her art and spirituality sessions integrate a contemplative approach to creativity and intuition, and offer a unique opportunity for spiritual insight and deep self-exploration. She also offers workshops and seminars incorporating the wisdom of the Christian mystics, as well as contemporary nature studies. A Miraculous Rescue Life-or-death experience at sea reveals the power of the Mahanta — God is always with us by Anne Archer Butcher An excerpt from Inner Guidance: Our Divine Birthright When the shark appeared, I was well off shore, swimming freestyle, facedown. As I turned my head to take a breath, suddenly I was choked with fear. Far to my left, a dark fin moved directly toward me. Adrenalin flooded my whole body, triggered by the basic instinct to fight or flee in the face of life-threatening danger. Flight was not an option. I stopped swimming instantly. But my heart would surely give me away. It was nearly pounding out of my chest. I closed my eyes and tried desperately to keep my mind from dwelling on the horror of being eaten by a shark. “Stay calm, stay calm!” I commanded my body. In that heart-stopping moment, driven by an all-encompassing terror, I searched inwardly for what to do. I knew it was time for a serious talk with God. Quickly! I needed the hand of God to reach out of the sky and pluck me from this ocean. Dear God, please…. Suddenly, inner guidance came. All my practice over the years of listening to the Divine came through. Although I was new to the teachings of Eckankar, I knew what to do. I would call upon the Mahanta, the Inner Master, for guidance and protection. I had read in Eckankar — The Key to Secret Worlds that calling on this magnificent inner presence would bring the assistance of the Mahanta, the greatest spiritual guide in the heavenly realms. But could the Mahanta really escort me out of this lifethreatening moment? Deliver me from a shark? Having delivered my plea, I stretched out like a log bobbing in the ocean. And though my heart was still racing outrageously, I experienced an immediate sense of emotional relief. A moment of absolute surrender passed through me like a gentle wave. I felt almost invisible in the water. No longer gripped by the paralyzing fear, I faced death with calmness, floating in one eternal moment of peace. Suddenly, I was hit hard from underneath. The impact was powerful, and my body jolted up out of the water and shot forward like a bullet. Was this an attack? The force of the blow was bone-jarring, yet I felt no pain. And then the most amazing thing

happened. For the briefest moment, I was suspended in the air, above the water. Then I felt my body falling back into the ocean. I was hit again. I didn’t understand what was happening, and my heart continued to pound wildly, yet still I felt no pain. I felt the strange hitting sensation slam against me a third time. Then a powerful, smooth, sleek body approached from my right side, and suddenly rose up underneath me, lifting me right out of the water! I was rapidly moving across the surface of the ocean, speeding toward the shore. The surface of the water broke in front of me, and I saw a heaven-sent rescuer on whose back I had just been carried. It was a beautiful dolphin, piercing the waves and jumping through the air in the inimitable way of these intelligent mammals. Just then another dolphin lifted me. Poised on the back of this second dolphin, I was again speeding through the water effortlessly. A third dolphin looked right at me as it dived to the left and submerged. A school of dolphins had come to my rescue! Quickly and smoothly, they brought me to the safety of chest-deep water near the beach. As I breathlessly turned to take in what was happening, I saw I was standing upright in the ocean, surrounded by an entire school of Atlantic bottlenose dolphins. Eventually, the dolphins turned and danced backward for several feet in a perfect farewell. It was clear that there was a power in the universe beyond anything I had ever conceived — a power that could pull together all the forces of nature in a split second to change the course of events in our lives. And today, that awesome power had saved my life. The experience left me with a strong sense of the interconnection of all life — and an awareness that God’s love, guidance, and protection are always with us. It does not matter how isolated we might feel; we are never alone. a For more info on the book Inner Guidance: Our Divine Birthright, go to Anne Archer Butcher is an award-winning producer, writer, mother, and wife, and a member of the Eckankar clergy. Telling time in the Afterlife by Janice Carlson

Somewhere between the present moment and eternity lies time in the afterlife. It’s a time “zone” most of us can only access when we are switched over to the non-temporal right lobes of our brains. This happens when we sleep, meditate or engage in a composing art, such as creative writing, drawing or even cake decorating. Ask any artist how accurate his time-gauging skills are when he’s creating something and you’re sure to hear that, without the aid of a timer alarm, he’d be utterly oblivious to such a left-brain task as getting to a dentist appointment on time. So, although our non-temporal right brains might seem rather useless in this left-brained workaday world, they are indispensable when it comes to creating art, meditating, and doing psychic/ medium work. After 20 years of doing afterlife communications with my clients’ loved ones and pets, timing still remains a factor when it comes to who I’m able to contact on the Other Side and how well his or her messages come through. One of the great advantages a professional medium can have is in scheduling appointments with clients. When we agree upon a mutually convenient date and time to do a session, it seems the loved one we wish to contact makes a note of it, too. Such prearranged sessions seem to give the dead time to take part in the session, that is, as opposed to expecting impromptu messages from a departed relative or friend at the drop of a hat. Admittedly, some spirits start feeding me identifying information about themselves a day or two ahead of time, and, sometimes, a spirit will start relaying specifics to me before such a session has even been scheduled! I remember the first time this happened to me. The image of a red-haired, middle-aged man popped into my head from nowhere and said emphatically, “I had paintings of ships on my walls.” At first I was tempted to write it off as some sort of mediumistic channel drift. But, when it matched the description of the dead dad of a new client who called me two days later, I realized I had just been reminded of one of the important truths of the afterlife: the dead can see into the future.

How far into the future? Decades, sometimes. But in the case of Peter Bue, one of the spirits with whom I speak regularly for his local widow, 21 days seems to be the average length of his foresight. On June 5, 2007, Peter made his first world prediction to his widow, Laura, and me. He said, “Some harm might befall Pope Benedict XVI.” Roughly seven hours later, according to The New York Times and, a “clearly deranged” man sprang over a barricade at St. Peter’s Square and appeared to grab the back of the uncovered popemobile in which the pontiff was riding. Fortunately, security guards subdued the man and the pope proceeded unscathed. Since that time, Peter has made 33 correct world predictions during our medium sessions. They’ve ranged from the widely reported UFO sightings in Stephensville, Texas, on the night of Jan. 8, 2008, to the collision of two nuclear submarines (one British and one French) on Aug. 18, 2009, to the foiled terrorist attack plan on Buckingham Palace, reported by the Daily Telegraph on Aug. 19, 2009. All of them were documented in printed-out emails between Laura and me. And, while these predictions have most often come to pass within two weeks, they’ve shown an average manifestation rate of 21 days. But I’m certainly not the only medium who has kept track of the timing of those in the afterlife. In the 1960s, Friedrich Jurgenson began making note of the details of his electronic voice phenomena communications, and he observed many things about the timing of the dead. Almost all of the messages he received came before 10 p.m. He never got messages during solar-flare or northern-light activities, and the communications always stopped when a thunderstorm was approaching. It’s likely we’ll all be spending a lot of time in the afterlife, and this certainly seems to make it a subject worthy of the time we need to learn more about it. a Janice Carlson is the author of Soul Sensing: How to Communicate With Your Dead Loved Ones. AWAKENING TO THE PRESENT MOMENT: THE LOTUS & THE WOODPECKER by Janet Michele Red Feather, J.D. I’m not picky about when or where I meditate. When the urge strikes, I sit quietly, inhale deeply, and wait for my guides to come through. One evening, I had a strong intuition to meditate. I lit some incense and white candles and sat in my recliner. I closed my eyes, allowing my hands and fingers to form, automatically, a familiar mudra. In my mind’s ear, I clearly discerned a phrase I had come across earlier that day — something about living in the eternal now. What at first had seemed like a consciousness catchphrase now blazed with chilling clarity: we live in a very, very long and very, vast space of no-time. We picture our lives as moving forward in time, a procession of neat little calendared cubbyholes, but the essence of what we are — our true nature — is Spiritual, and therefore, Infinite. Our journey is not a linear trek. Instead, we travel an ever-rising path, moving upward, expanding into our higher selves. Eventually we become the guides and ascended masters who now harbor compassion for us in our currently dense condition here on Earth. I cannot express fully the joy and freedom this awareness brings. This brilliant realization has eclipsed any feelings of lack and curbed any emergent drive toward acquisitiveness. Moving softly and steadily into each moment of the eternal now, I am filled with feelings of calm, peace, and happiness toward my surroundings. A child of the Universe, I am already, and will always be, exactly where I belong. Why should I long for things I do not have? Why should I worry that I haven’t yet landed my dream home, a log cabin in the woods

EMBODYING PRESENT MOMENT AWARENESS by Richard Moss When you appreciate the power of awareness, your ego is no longer in control. You know that you have thoughts, but you are not just your thoughts. You have feelings, but you are not just your feelings. There is a distance between who you are and the thoughts and feelings you are aware of. You are no longer automatically identified with them. This level of consciousness is a relationship that allows you to question your beliefs and to dance with feelings in ever new ways. Thought by thought, feeling by feeling, perception by perception, you can choose new behaviors and thereby invent yourself anew. Self-invention is an opportunity

with a sweat lodge? Lao Tzu profoundly admonishes, “When you realize that nothing is lacking, the whole world belongs to you.” I already have everything I need, since my journey toward the light is immeasurable. There is no real beginning or end. I am, therefore, situated squarely in the present moment every single moment. A control freak since birth, I have since let go of my clenched, beautiful brain and just let the universe take its course. There is nothing passive about this stance. Rather, it is an active, open gaze of awareness I turn toward the light that surrounds me. That’s what they mean: all those cryptic, Eastern teachers wish us to understand that the same lotus blossom that begins its life mired in murky mud will eventually unfold its soft, pale pink petals to the yellow-white light of a noon-day sun. The strident chirp of a pileated woodpecker calls insistently from the fancy suet feeder at my fourth-floor balcony. He’s scolding me for having opened the vertical blinds, thus compromising his peaceful and present moment with berries, seed and peanut butter. He doesn’t need workshops or tapes; he’s already living existentially. Every blue-white moment in his infinite sky is heaven. We, in our arrogance, think of them as dumb or blind creatures, but in many ways, birds are more attuned than humans. No one need instruct them to sing the sunrise into being or usher in the sudden sluicing of horizontal winds full of early autumn rain. As I awaken in meditation, I resolve to embrace the luxuriousness of every moment without worry, without judgment, without despair. Is that not happiness? a Janet Michele Red Feather, J.D., M.A., has taught literature and composition for 18 years at the university, state college, tribal college and community college levels. presented to every human being. It is the path all great souls have lived. Every person who inspires us because of the depth of their humanity did not follow a path laid down by others. Although they were no doubt influenced by those who inspired them, what they lived came out of themselves as they chose a new relationship to their beliefs and fears, and above all dove deeply into the immediacy of their embodied experience. When asked why he never spoke with anger of the Chinese who had invaded his country, killed millions of his countrymen, and were systematically destroying the ancient Tibetan culture, the Dalia Lama responded simply, “Because I feel better.” He chose the immediacy of embodied well-being over anger, bitterness, or righteous judgment. He clearly knows that the temple of the body is the primary place of worship where the Divine is celebrated. Living deeply into his embodied self, he recognized love, compassion and forgiveness as healthy, not bitterness or powerless-

ness. In this way he, like all the great souls, is inventing himself, not from beliefs or automatic reactions, but from embodied truth. When Jesus teaches “turn the other cheek,” he is not being merely moral; he is teaching from embodiment. He is saying that returning a blow with another blow only leads to more anger and hatred. The teaching is simple: If you want peace, you must be peace. When St. Francis kissed a leper, he turned toward what in his time was a terribly misunderstood disease that filled people with terror and superstition. Instead of being ruled by fear, he embraced the fear and offered love. Again, this is not a mentally generated morality or spirituality; it is fundamental creativity born of being deeply embodied. He was inventing himself by choosing a new behavior, and at the heart of that behavior was an unshakeable connection to his own embodiment. CHERISH THE PRESENT MOMENT in your life by Chelsea Hanson

Have you ever caught yourself in the middle of a perfectly wonderful moment thinking about what you’re going to do next? We all do it and it’s something that most of us have to make a conscious effort to correct. What’s so bad about letting your mind wander off to the next big thing or the memories you hold onto from years ago? You miss out on all of the things happening around you right now. The next thing you know, you’re living that moment you were thinking about so longingly yesterday, but your mind has moved on to tomorrow or is stuck in a moment from two weeks ago. Challenge yourself to start living in the present, starting now. STOP LIVING IN THE FUTURE: During our younger years, we tend to spend a lot of time wishing for the future. We see all of the privileges that come with growing up and we wish our time away. We wish for the day we get our driver’s license, we can’t wait to move away to college, and then finally, to graduate into the “real world.” All of a sudden, our college days are over and we wish we could go back to those days. The wisdom to appreciate these years is not commonly found in teenagers and young adults, but it’s important to slow down and cherish these moments now before they are gone. STOP LIVING IN THE PAST: After you lose a loved one to death, it’s common to find yourself living in the past. You think about how great your life was when the person you lost was still a part of it. There’s a difference between keeping the memories of your departed loved one alive and missing out on your life now because you’re stuck in the past. Even though your loved one is gone, there are people in your life now who care about you very much and who want to see you happy. Don’t miss out on that love and happiness that is all around you now because you can’t stop thinking about the way your life used to be. We all have one life to live. Live your life in the present and try to cherish each moment as it happens. We’re only human, so you’re bound to find yourself longing for a different time every now and then. It’s okay to hold onto your memories and to get excited about the future, but don’t let those past and future moments keep you from cherishing the moment that is happening right in front of you. HAVE THE COURAGE TO LIVE A LIFE TRUE TO YOURSELF, NOT THE LIFE OTHERS EXPECT: People say it all the time: “You only live once.” Yet, it’s still so easy to forget that on a daily basis. Sometimes we get so caught up in the day-to-day grind that we forget to make each day count. Time goes by so quickly that we seldom stop to really think about life and whether we’re living it in a way that will allow us to look back on it with no regrets when all is said and done. WHAT WILL YOU DO? Living a life true to yourself is going to look different for everyone. For some, it could be something drastic, like a career change, faith change or relocation. For others, it might be simply making small changes to your daily living, like learning to tell people “no” when you have to. Find out what it is you have to do in order to start living true to yourself and work towards putting that into action. It’s not going to be easy and like any change, it will take time. Be diligent about chipping away at the change, and patient in reaching your goal. a Chelsea Hanson is a grief educator and author of the Hello from Heaven series of books, which provide gentle reassurance that love lives on, and that our loved ones are always with us. To give tangible comfort and inspiration, she also founded www., which provides memorial and sympathy gifts to honor and remember the beautiful lives of those who have gone before us. by Louis Bourgeois For me, awakening into the awareness of the present moment, or what I would prefer to call presence, has been a gradual process. When I was very young I had a series of “aha! moments,” revelations that gave me a sneak preview of sorts into present moment consciousness. Of course, these revelations for most who are in their 20s or 30s get lost in the busyness of life. One near-death experience at the age of 36, then another at the age of 40, opened my mind and my heart much more to this timeless reality, or eternity. What I have come to know as a very solid truth is that the energy body, and especially the heart center, is a portal through which presence, or eternity, seeks expression into the world of space and time. Quite a number of years ago Fritjof Capra explained to the lay person the way in which this timeless reality intersects with our space/time world. In his book, The Tao of Physics, Capra used the example of the swinging pendulum, about that exquisite moment each time the pendulum reached the end of its swing in one direction, stopping momentarily, before beginning again movement now in the opposite direction. I can remember “grokking” that in my body, between each heartbeat, between each breath, there was this same still moment, and it was through this stillness that presence, or divine radiance, could be experienced. But my knowledge of how time and eternity were related did little to change my way of seeing the world or how I lived my life. It would take a number of waves of devastation to break down my egoic structures and the conditioning of my very mechanistic and materialistic culture to truly help me to awaken to a new way of feeling and living. I remember a pivotal point in my journey, in 2006, just a year after leaving my marriage and my business as a landscape contractor, when a woman I did not know contacted me. She had seen some things I had written online, and she knew about my deep devotion to the teaching of A Course in Miracles and my more recent devotion to the teaching of Eckhart Tolle.

 Embodying continued from page 18 moment awareness, you can feel instantly how every thought uplifts or poisons you. If you live in your head instead of in your body, you will identify with your thoughts and believe whatever you have been taught by others. The sickness of righteousness, pride, exclusiveness and anger that your thoughts create will be considered normal emotions. They are not; they are selfpollution and flagrant disrespect for your own embodiment. If you live in your body, your body will show you truth in every moment and the deepest truth is the peace that “goes beyond

My new friend, who had traveled for several years studying with Eckhart Tolle, and was now training to become a facilitator of The Work of Byron Katie, proposed that we sit together daily for one month and do a silent meditation while listening to a section of Eckhart Tolle’s “last” retreat in Costa Rica, entitled “Freedom from the World.” (Tolle went into retirement after this retreat late in 2002, and the DVD series was published in 2004. Later, Tolle would be pulled out of retirement by the influence of Oprah Winfrey). Our early morning joined silent meditation was so powerful that at the end of the month, we committed to continue for another month. It was somewhere in this second month that the “final” download came into my heart center. The word singularity became dominant for me, reflective of the directive attributed to Jesus: “…If therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.” Being washed, again and again, by this divine light, presence, one becomes truly changed at the core. No longer do the mundane things of the world seem so important, in the same way that lingering close to death, our own or that of one very dear to us, teaches us. Today, at 61, I can fully incorporate (bring fully into the body) what were strange revelations at 21, and deep heart yearnings at 41. To allow this relationship with eternity to become aligned with and in balance with the relationship that we enjoy in the space/time world, what I call “walking with one foot in eternity,” is amazing. Literally, what this offers is a deep sense of peace, a calm patience, because our relationship with time has been tempered by timelessness. Our relationship with the physical world has been altered by the awareness of our true home that we carry with us, in the energy body and heart center, everywhere we go. I call this heart condition Big Love! a

understanding.” A closed, tense body is a poor transmitter of the grace of life. An unhappy body leads to negative moods, which in turn create reactive, self-protective thinking. The choice is not about morality, it is about true intelligence. It is essential to be present in your body because the body is always in the Now and tells you immediately what your thinking is doing to you. As you learn to be embodied and not trapped in your head, you begin to realize a sense of inner stillness that is your link to the universal wisdom that all the great souls have drawn from. When you pull yourself out of your head, 

THE PRESENT MOMENT TIME IS OF NO ESSENCE by Blair Shackle Sometimes the best action is inaction. When the world gives you grey and drizzle, all we want is sunshine and blue skies. Most of us are incapable of truly seeing and accepting the beauty in the “imperfect.” It’s impossible to force nature to mind our terms. No matter how much we whine and beg, the grey will linger as long as it needs to. Nature’s soul song is one of inaction and allowance. This song is sung so sweetly when life is allowed to happen on its own. Where time is of no essence, trying is of no use, and where gratitude comes in the moment of growth, not gain. Just like a beautiful flower in spring — budding and stretching, waking up and reaching for the sky — it will bloom without trying, on its own time, without pleading, plodding and wondering why it didn’t bloom yesterday! Often, life gives us times where we need to practice loving our imperfections. “Why didn’t I get that job?” “Will I ever lose those ten pounds?” “How come I never have enough money in the bank?” “I don’t feel motivated to do anything.” “Why am I always getting sick?” We focus so intently on being (and staying) uncomfortable. Staying in a place of sadness, anger and confusion is like wrapping up in a comfy sweater that at first seems to keep us warm, but soon it becomes very itchy and it’s all we can focus on. Yet, we refuse to take the sweater off for fear that it is our only means to staying warm, shielded and “normal.” But the real normal is accepting the discomfort and knowing it is a part of life. If we take off our “sweater,” life will give us other options to keep us “warm.” It will also allow us to know that life brings all of us a balance of discomfort and comfort, happiness and sadness, time for action and time for rest. A part of our mission in this world is to find the gap in between comfort and discomfort. This is where we thrive, in our most natural state… balance.

where do you land? Right here: breathing, feeling, seeing, hearing, touching, tasting. Thinking stops, because there is no thinking in the Now, only awareness. The mind is simultaneously focused and spacious and the body is at once ready and relaxed. Every perception is more vivid. Every breath feels alive and you can sense vital energy flowing through you. Deep insight arises spontaneously. Once you know this deeper connection to yourself, the emotional world created by your thinking becomes much less interesting because, mostly, it is bringing you suffering. When you step out of your head and into

This tender space brings flow, allowance and acceptance of all of life’s idiosyncrasies. Balance is divine comfort, the sweater that keeps us warm, but never gets itchy. The balance is where you allow life to happen to you; you don’t happen to life. We don’t have to always be strong, powerful, in control and take charge as we think we do. Step back and see the perfection in the perceived lack. Realize, deeply and humbly, that we are supported in every way. Release the need to fix immediately, numb your pain, mask your feelings, and so on. Mind the gap and reflect on its beauty. Back to those above “imperfections,” also see the the lesson or opportunity for change in the questions and negative self-talk. If nothing is changing with the methods you’re applying to induce change, seek to go deeper into the root cause of the discomfort. If you’re not acquiring a job as quickly as you had hoped, is there something on a soul level that you need to focus on before you begin a job? Or in a relationship, if you’re not meeting “the one,” is this an opportunity to truly love yourself first? Don’t be afraid to dive in deep inside — that’s where you keep your light. Because some of us are used to being in the dark, looking at our light may actually be frightening at first. But don’t be. It is there for you to discover and share. Remember, the cracks are how the light gets in. Our discomfort is a blessing in disguise. Ultimately, know that everything will work out in the best way for you. Try not to kick and scream like a toddler in the toy aisle at Target, because in that, you are pushing against the natural flow of life. Your petals will unfurl, your face will turn toward the sun, and you will see the pure perfection that is the process of letting go and knowing that you, indeed, did not need to do anything in order to grow. a Blair Shackle is a millennial spirit warrior with a creative cause to connect the world by sharing her light in the hopes it will ignite yours! your body, you inhabit the nobility of your own being. You recognize instantly when your head has pulled you into judgmental thinking and stress. THE PRESENT MOMENT The Awakened Heart HOLDS all that Life offers by Efrén Francisco Solanas

I am once again in the midst of what I refer to as my triple-Scorpio tendency to topple everything at once, and from scratch, rebuild my life. I’ll give you an idea of the scope. There have been major tremors simultaneously affecting my career, important friendships, spiritual community and health…and these are just a few from a longer list. I am writing in early October, so I include the drama in Washington, D.C., regarding the funding of our government and the debt ceiling. A friend alerted me that we are currently affected by Pluto in Capricorn, which invokes the destruction of old systems and paradigms —personally and collectively. Perhaps I am not alone in feeling overwhelmed by change. I have spent extended time in meditative retreat and have a cellular memory of what it feels like to be in profound silence, centered in the present moment. Returning to that sublime state in the midst of a maelstrom is not something I achieve easily. Over the past month, I’ve been striving to encounter that exquisite balance once more, struggling with a part of myself that is ever ready to produce a series of imagined disasters inspired by the changes in my life.

Gazing towards Washington, D.C., in amazement, I wonder if the external is not actually a projection of our inner life. Are there aspects of my personality blindly resisting compromise? Do I allow a component within my psyche to split off and stridently oppose all view points except its own, ignoring the risk of massive loss in the process? As we are collectively carried towards the political precipice, I long for a voice of compassionate wisdom to propose a solution. Knowing that transformation always occurs in the present, I continue to gently bring myself back to the here and now to take a slow, conscious breath and open to where I am located at the moment: teaching a course in Brazil. Birds sing outside. The rhythm of the ocean’s waves washes over me day and night. I am well fed and housed in spartan, but clean, safe quarters. The honest assessment is that in this sacred instant all is… superb! In the midst of so much change, my overwhelmed mind is prone to anticipate numerous horrific possibilities. The truth is that very little is under my control. The level of my power varies, dependent on the direction of my attention. Do I cast it forward towards the imagined future? Or, perhaps back to the past, searching for blame or regret? No. The present is the honest place of power. If I can muster the courage to be here now, I may well encounter pain, fear and sadness, especially if I am navigating change in numerous areas of my life. However, the

difference is that the emotions are real. If I can bring spaciousness to my emotions and allow myself to feel, they will pass, as that is their nature; they arise — then disappear. If I cast my attention forward or backward in avoidance, I am living a fantasy that only serves to anesthetize and avoid any movement. The spirit of compassion can meet the sadness and embrace the fear without judgment. Creating a spaciousness of Self allows both fear and trust, sadness and hope, anger and love to co-exist in harmony. It is this very paradox that fosters compassion and acceptance, both internally and in the world. A teacher of mine once shared a story regarding a Native tradition that responds to theft in the community by gathering all members in a circle around the perpetrator, to inquire what inside of him is in sufficient pain to allow him to inflict injury on a fellow tribe member. It is loving attention that fosters healing and a return to the wholeness. a

November’s words of wisdom by Nadine Penny

Turn off the TV this Thanksgiving — and in honor of Book Lovers’ Day, gift yourself (and your family) with a rollicking good read. Whether it’s a Maeve Binchy, Bill Bryson or Sylvia Browne, choose books that motivate, educate or captivate and stimulate your mind, memory and imagination with a brain workout that is second to none. Reading is good for the body and soul, too. Why? The more you read, the more you learn, the more you can apply to enrich and improve your life. And, studies show that a six-minute good read will lift spirits and reduce stress by up to 68 percent, which means your holiday will be a truly relaxing one! a Nadine Penny attained her M.A. from the University of Denver in Counseling Psychology.
