The game of life is changing before our very eyes from the editor

MIEJAN here’s nothing new I can tell you, perhaps only reminders of things you already know. You and I know more than we are aware, and still, we seem to know next to nothing in the great scheme of it all.

Sometimes I feel like we are all participants of a huge reality show called “Life on Earth.”

The objective is to make it from the starting line to the finishing line, alive. The challenge is to overcome self-imposed obstacles [insert yours here] while at the same time surviving ones that the show’s producers throw in just to entertain the viewing audience [earthquakes and other natural disasters, the boss firing you unexpectedly, the bank taking away your home, a devastating car crash, diagnosis of a life-threatening illness, insert others here].

As children, we grow up not knowing we are part of a game, then we mature and become aware of the game. Most of us grow old accepting that the game’s just life. Some people, who were bitterly angry when they learned about the game, live out their lives growing more and more resentful.

Others cannot come to terms with the game, so they resist. They do everything they can to live outside of the rules, often finding themselves constantly on the run, trying to stay off the grid, undetected.

Surrender to the flow And then you have the people who see the game for what it is. Instead of pushing themselves into survivor mode, they do just the opposite. They do nothing. They choose not to compete. They surrender to the flow. They are the Bartlebys of the world, the odd ducks who don’t try to fit in, scorned by everyone around them, misinterpreted as misfits.

In reality, they are as free as any being that has ever lived.

These ones, I am convinced, are the wayshowers. These fearless mystics navigate the darkness as well as the light, but they do not proselytize. They keep to themselves, speak only when spoken to, and have the ability to vanish when any outside intruder forces their hand.

I have known some of these mystics in this lifetime, and perhaps you have, too. Stay close and listen to what they say, more through their

actions than their words. Be observant, for they move like the wind. They speak in riddles and verse, and they think in circles rather than straight lines. They attract followers like a bright light induces summer bugs to swarm in bliss, not aware of how close they are to flying into the sun.

Their message is always the same, these fearless mystics: Simplicity. No arcane formulas and charts to memorize. No grandiose vision outlined in thirty dusty, hardcover volumes.

Just the simple truth.

We hear that and our attention wanes. We look to our left and we look to our right for the next big secret, the next big ticket, where the shiny book is not only spellbinding, but the movie is out of this world.

Game changer What’s unique now, with the game growing old for souls who came onto the planet to bust up paradigms, is that people are intentionally stepping into uncharted waters. They not only are walking off the edge of the flat Earth, but they are returning to tell us something that has never been heard by so many people at the same time: The Game is Optional.

These 21st century pioneers are telling us that the incredible change we see all around us is mirroring the change taking place within us.

The chrysalis. The butterfly. Our evolution as a conscious process of creation.

The transformers, the wayshowers, have been whispering all along, quietly seeing and embracing and feeling a new field of energy that is shifting the way we operate as conscious beings. Now, more voices are coming forward to translate what it means to live outside of the game, where power lies within the individual.

People are stepping into this field of energy and they are sharing ways in which they are consciously creating their way forward.

And they are encouraging each of us to listen within for this impulse of metamorphosis. Do you feel it? Do you want to?

This talk of conscious creation may seem too theoretical, without offering a clear guide for application. But one day soon, it will be a part of each of us, a silent upgrade enacted on our operating systems. No big announcement. Just a new way of being. k

Lama Ole Nydahl, one of the most active and exemplary teachers of Tibetan Buddhism, will give a public lecture entitled “Buddhism in the Modern World” at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30, at Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, 130 Humphrey Center, 301 19th Ave. S, Minneapolis.

Lama Ole Nydahl, who enjoys skydiving and fast motorcycles, is a modern-day Lama who breaks with convention.

“Recognizing mind to be like space will make us fearless,” says Nydahl, “the recognition of that which looks through our eyes and listens through our ears is basically space and not some ‘thing’ which has been born, made, created or put together. This realization gives an unshakable state, something that is solid which can be relied upon.” Nydahl met Buddhism in 1968 while traveling through Nepal on his honeymoon. Nydahl and his wife became the first Western students of H.H. 16th Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, head of the Karma Kagyü School of Tibetan Buddhism. elen Reddy, the Grammy Awardwinning artist, roared with “can do” optimism. Now, as a woman retired from show business, she is roaring with wisdom – about life, about the planet we all share, and about ways we can cooperate and bring about peace and prosperity for all. HELEN REDDY now focuses on global transformation

with several specials that were seen in more than 40 countries.

Helen was the first Western female performer invited to sing in the People’s Republic of China, and the lyrics she penned for her feminist anthem “I Am Woman” are now included in American high school textbooks. Her best-selling memoir The Woman I Am (Tarcher/ Penguin) reveals the strong spiritual faith that has sustained her throughout all of the highs and lows of her life.

She spoke with The Edge from her home in Sydney about her upcoming visit to the Midwest, and much more.

I understand you had an early experience at the age of 11 that changed how you viewed life and death. Can you relate what happened and how that affected you throughout your life?

Helen Reddy: When I was 11, I was in school and we used to have assembly every morning, for the whole school. Teachers and pupils would assemble and there would be a hymn, and the head mistress would give a reading of some kind. There were chairs for the teachers, but not for us. We used to stand for the whole time.

The head mistress was held up that morning by a phone call, so we were left standing for about 20 minutes before she came. During the middle of her talking, I started seeing brown spots in front of my eyes and was feeling just weird, and then the next thing I knew I was at the back of the room, looking down and I could see that one of the girls – we were all in identical uniforms – was on the floor.

I thought, “Oh, somebody must have fainted. I wonder who it is?” And, I zoomed in for a close-up and I was looking at my own face. So, I thought at that point that I’d died, because I was definitely outside my body.

That was the realization for me that I was not a human having a spiritual experience, I was a spirit having a human experience, that my body was simply something that I had been inside, you know, like a suit of clothes, but that the real me existed forever. So, since that time, even though I did not discuss it for many, many years, I have never been afraid of death or had any doubt of eternal life.

At what point did you feel comfortable discussing it with other people?

HR: Oh, not until many years later when people did start discussing experiences that they’d had – and most people will. Most people will say, “I don’t believe in this, that, or the other, but I did have this experience….” And then they will proceed to tell you about something that is definitely what I would call a psychic experience.

Was spirituality a part of your upbringing?

HR: I was very religious as a child, and I used to go to church and Sunday School every Sunday, and I always went alone. My family never came with me. I was sent, basically. When I was 9, I was the edge: soul of the cities November 2010

asking a lot of questions that nobody seemed able to answer. For anything they couldn’t explain, it was always, “Well, you must have faith.”

I was seeing a lot of hypocrisy. One week we’d be told that all the other religions were false, that ours was the only true one. And then the next week would be world brotherhood and our oneness with those of all faiths. It just wasn’t working for me. So, I became an atheist at the age of 9. Then, when I had the out-of-body experience at age 11, that was the really the rediscovery of something that I believed inside myself, but couldn’t prove, shall we say.

What led to your interest in hypnotherapy?

HR: Well, there was no such thing as hypnotherapy in those days.

There were stage hypnotists, and because I was in show business, I was familiar with them. I always thought of them like magicians.

The interesting thing is most of them didn’t believe in hypnotism themselves.

I must have been in my early teens, I guess, when I read The Search for Bridey Murphy, by Morey Bernstein, which came out in the mid-’50s. It was a breakthrough kind of book, and my first awareness of reincarnation. That really set me off, and that was the beginning of my search.

But hypnotherapy did not come into being until fairly recent times, and it is only now that we’re being validated by other branches of the mental health profession, shall we say.

What I am concentrating on most these days, with us being in the shift, is reuniting people with deceased loved ones who have passed over. It’s usually a parent or a grandparent that comes through, and they’re tremendously healing sessions, because these two people can now get together and sit down and talk. They are very emotional sessions and a lot of forgiveness and healing takes place. For me, anyway, that is what is most important at this juncture in our history.

During these transformational times, the shift, what do you see happening regarding money and personal finances?

HR: I see the entire world monetary system collapsing. And, it is only when the rich find out that they cannot eat gold that it’s really going to hit them, I think.

Do you think the ultimate solution for our economic chaos is more of a sharing of the wealth?

HR: Well, I would redefine wealth. As the Bible says, “Love of money is the root of all evil,” and I really feel that we in America have worshipped money for far too long. We are starting to get back to the way a lot of things used to be, but there is far too much government interference in our lives – in every aspect.

For instance, in the United States it is illegal to barter. That’s what I’ve been led to believe, because the government wants a piece of the action. The same thing has happened down here in Australia.

For several years now they have had the GST, a goods and services tax. What that means is if you were a friend of mine and I was going to give you a haircut, and you were going to fix something for me, there would be an exchange of services. Even though no money changed hands, the government still expects to get tax on the money that they would have gotten if we had each paid for the services.

This interference is unacceptable, as far as I’m concerned. I’m also very big on the fact that we have to start growing our own food as much as possible.

Are there any practices that you would recommend that we use in our daily lives, at this time?

HR: More sharing, rather than trading. More giving freely without the expectation of something in return. Just a greater generosity of spirit.

There was a story in Atlantic magazine a couple of years ago now.

area, and he hadn’t been there in years. He went back to visit his old neighborhood, and when he got there the entire block was gone, except for one house. Only one house was still left standing, and it belonged to the first black family to move into the neighborhood.

The elderly woman was still there living with her grandson. One by one, as each of the other houses were vacated and the government had razed them, the land was considered to be worthless, so the city was selling it for a pittance. So this woman bought up all this land around her over a period of time. She now owns the entire block, and she’s farming it.

There are something like 20 market gardens already going in the Detroit area, and I know people here in Sydney are growing vegetables on nature strips. There is a movement. It’s quiet, but it’s steady. I’m thrilled to see the way aquaponics is taking off. It’s something that I talk about a lot and I have no financial interest in it whatsoever.

Hydroponics is water intensive. Agriculture is water intensive.

With aquaponics, you have the same water recirculating, so you are using only 10 percent of the amount of water that you would use in normal agriculture. With so many areas now under drought, this is a Godsend. In the space of a single-car garage, I’m growing eggplant, green peppers, celery, and much more, and I get a harvest every four weeks.

In aquaponics, you use freshwater fish. I’m using guppies that I got out of the duck pond down by the water mill, and that’s what I’m using. The color of the vegetables is incredible! I mean, to see an iceberg lettuce that’s a deep green color. The ones you get at the market you could read the newspaper through. And the flavor is wonderful, and its 100 percent organic. We cannot spray any of the plants because it would kill the fish. A lot of different sprays are used in hydroponics, so they can’t say that it is 100 percent organic.

My daughter, who lives in California, has installed two huge water tanks and she has a half acre that she farms. She started planting an orchard 10 years ago. Some of us have known what’s coming and we’ve been preparing. On my property on Norfolk Island, here in Australia, I have a fresh water creek that circles it, you could say horseshoes it, so I have a source of fresh running water. It’s a small farm with an established orchard. Yes, we need to grow our own food.

It’s about reconnecting with the land.

HR: Yes. There’s a wonderful book that’s come out, that I’ve been reading. I think this guy might just be my soulmate. He’s Irish and his book is called, The Moneyless Man: A Year of Freeconomic Living, by Mark Boyle. As an experiment, he decided to live for a year without any money whatsoever. He’s now done it for two years.

I don’t know that they’ll ever print this book in America. All his proceeds go to charity. This is my kind of a man.

So, what is coming up for your future?

HR: I’m very busy with my hypnotherapy practice and my talks, and I’m involved with a lot of things. So, my life is actually busier. I can’t believe it. I thought I was retiring. I’m just not singing anymore, that’s all. I don’t seem to be retired. I’m not out to pasture.

If you could say something to all your fellow human beings across the planet, what would be your message?

Gay but not Out to the Family The power of denial in this age of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell

I

Giselle M. Massi delight in the mystery of power, how it arises from seemingly nothing, is as invisible as gravity until it exerts influence upon something else, how it contains both the ability to build and destroy depending on the slightest increments of strength.

Denial is maybe the most fascinating power to me because of its inherent nature to be the best of friends, or the worst enemy, depending on how it manifests. Since learning one of my sisters is in the throws of a mental impairment that has seized her capacity to recognize she is incapacitated and that also triggers outrageous expressions of denial, I’ve spent a fair amount of time pondering the wiliness of denial’s power. No amount of rational discussion, medication, surgery or gifts of love will ever be able to break a level of denial and delusion created from a brain that has been so fried.

The kind of denial that has captured my focus recently isn’t one that is brought on by damaged brain tissue. It’s the kind of denial that manifests as a result of an emotional wound or a shock to the psyche that shows a person just isn’t able to come to terms with a new reality or new information. Maybe just not yet, anyway.

In much the same way that a transplanted seedling or a tree needs gentle handling, careful watering, and time in order for its disturbed roots to adjust, thus it is with our own ability to adapt to painful or sensitive information. Until the transplanting, there is no way to be completely sure whether the change in the setting or environment, however ideal it appears it should be, will create a plant that will thrive.

This is similar to personal information that is particularly sensitive. Until one actually has received the information, there is no way to know for sure just how a person will receive it, whether it will be embraced or not, or even possibly create an opportunity for denial to emerge and plant firm roots in the fertile soil of denial.

With regularity, my ongoing efforts to support my ill sister as well as my counseling work, brings me into elaborate conversations about denial. A particularly compelling exchange that has come up a number of times is about the denial swirling about a gay person

and whether or not that person’s family knows or are in denial about it, when it is so clearly obvious to virtually everyone else that the person is not heterosexual.

The debate in Congress about repealing the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT) policy has helped bring the issue of denial front and center to those who aren’t even in the military or homosexual. It is likely the courts will get the power to ask and to tell since many elected leaders still seem to be too much in denial about the reality of the pain caused by wishy-washy policies. Sometimes, as in the case with DADT, compromise turns out not to be the most wise response, however compassionate the intention may be.

Questions about sexual preference that have been discussed with me include: 1) whether or not the parent(s) or family should be informed 2) whether or not the subject of sexual preference is an appropriate topic for discussion 3) whether or not relatives should be talking openly about the gay-butnot-out-to-the-family without the gay person’s knowledge and 4) what the heck should a person do with sensitive information like this?

I am grateful I have personal experience with a professional friend who never once mentioned to me their child is gay as I have been able to use this as one example of a spiritual way this issue can be navigated.

To my knowledge, the professional friend never made a pronouncement to anyone. Because of my gift of clairvoyance I had already known years before, but the actual confirmation of their child’s sexuality eventually emerged through other sources.

And even though the professional friend knows I know their child is gay, it is never going to be a topic for discussion between us, unless that person decides to bring it up to me.

As a spiritually aware parent, this professional friend knows personal information is for the individual to choose or not to choose to disseminate, not the parent’s place. Even if this professional friend had not respected their child’s privacy and instead had told me this information, it would be incumbent upon me to not divulge it.

In Judaism there is a traditional teaching that speaks to this: whatever is told to someone is automatically understood to be confidential,

and conversations remain private unless the person has specifically given permission to the other for the information to be shared. It is the unspoken agreement that everything said is always “off the record” (meaning not meant for the public) unless otherwise indicated.

To me there is sanctity within such a powerful practice, as it prevents needless suffering.

Yet, ours is a culture that routinely deviates from its own Judaic traditions. Gossip, not privacy, seems to be the normative.

One’s personal business never seems to remain personal or very private for very long, and as a result many misunderstandings and even painful consequences are created. And so it is that the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” was never a practical policy to implement, notwithstanding constitutional considerations regarding discrimination.

But much closer to home, what is one to do with the actual denial that swirls about a family member (or a friend) who will not, or cannot seem to, face the reality that their loved one is gay-but-not-out-tothe-family, yet? Does one have a spiritual obligation or duty to assist that person out of their denial by informing them their child, sibling or relative is not heterosexual? Does one have a spiritual obligation to open a space for the gay-but-notout-to-the-family to reveal their personal truth in hopes they may be free in their unique expression?

None of these questions seem to hold as much interest for me as the more important question of what kind of relative or friend will you be when you are finally facing the news that your loved one is not heterosexual, and you are learning the information has been intentionally withheld from you, for whatever the reason. Will you be compassionate or judgmental? Hostile or thankful to now stand in the light of truth?

Will you be unconditionally loving or unforgiving? If you don’t ask these questions and don’t tell yourself the answers, you just may be in denial. k

My experience with Christine Day and the Pleiadians

Norman F. Strizek he first time I encountered Christine Day was as a guest on my radio show in New Mexico. I host an independent GLBT radio show and periodically have on “spiritual folks.” Christine was bright, articulate and had a distinct point-of-view. She was open about her past and did not shy away from difficult questions. Her words charged me with energy.

I was so inspired that I became somewhat light headed. I was talking to a person who directly channeled wisdom from the Pleiadians and had inspired a new way of being for countless people around the world. It had been a long time since I had heard anything that moved me the way Christine did.

During the interview, she told me that she would be giving a three-day Pleiadian Seminar in Minneapolis at the end of July. Something inside of me knew that I had to attend. It had been years since I had taken a workshop and I knew that this was the time. The radio interview was in December and I would have to wait seven long months to find out more.

I arrived in Minneapolis early so I could rest up and be revitalized for the Event.

I had purchased her book Christine Day [Pleiadian Initiations of Light] and listened to the two CDs that were included. Each chapter builds upon the next, bringing me into a new understanding of myself, my ongoing situations, and feelings about my life. “The CDs build in energy, chapter by chapter, as the reader opens to the process. They have an unlimited amount of different experiences available on them, depending on where the reader is in the process. Each journey on every CD is unique, so there are new levels of initiation each time you listen.”

The seminar was filled with people. About a third of the attendees were men, which really surprised me. In the early days, there were very few men at any consciousness-raising events. The seminar started promptly at 9 a.m. and Christine was a firm lieutenant with instructions on how the seminar would work. The three days were filled with toning, experiential work and structured activities. There was time for questions and feedback. Overall, the event passed quickly, perhaps too quickly.

One of the more memorable experiential exercises was focused on letting go. Christine was filled with joy when she announced that she would be transmitting energy to us to help us let go. She suggested we let go of our daily woes, our fears and problems – all

things that consume our energy. As she began toning and moving her arms, I felt like I was at a sporting event, someplace where whole sections of the crowd were doing “the wave.” Although Christine’s rendition of the wave was energetic, I could feel a sense of peace and envelopment by the warmth and energy of her work. She repeated the letting-go exercise several times, and with each successive repetition the energy and release became more pronounced. I knew I was in the right place at the right time.

Sound is also an integral part of Christine’s work. Toning and other sacred sounds filled the room. It is an amazing experience to be a part of a group whose intention is to harmonize feelings.

By day three, the sound was vibrant, alive and transformational.

Christine was always available and “hands on” with her participants. During breaks, or at lunch, Christine would always be walking around and checking in with people. She is not the kind of person who hides out or surrounds herself with an elite few.

She did have five assistants, who accomplished tasks as simple as getting a microphone to a person with a question or as difficult as supporting someone through an exercise.

Christine teaches all over the world. Sometimes she draws crowds as large as 5,000 people who attend her events or transmissions. The three-day Pleiadian event is just one of her offerings and has no prerequisites, and you may meet people who have studied with Christine for years. Her work is layered, so the novice gains a level of understanding and integration not found with other people’s work.

Two things really stand out from my own personal experience with the Pleiadian workshop. First, I greatly reinforced my feelings for and respect of the third-dimensional world that we live in. Simple things like getting up and seeing the clouds or the morning sky are a tremendous gift for me, and my experience at the workshop somehow enhanced that. Secondly, it helped me open up and trust. I am ready for whatever is next in my life; albeit richer or poorer, sickness or health.

I am opening my heart and making myself available for the human experience, the Angelic experience and the Pleiadian experience, such as it is…all wonderful. k

What Sam knew… for only a minute or two

Mike Geronsin ensing his time on Earth was at its last moments, Sam took one last deep breath and braced himself for the ride. He began to feel a murring sensation in his feet that started slowly, crawling its way up his legs until his entire mid-section was vibrating with violent energy. The energy then surged upwards, forcing his eyes to stare straight up into his head. The pressure felt like the fastest roller coaster ever made; he almost couldn’t stand it anymore when… the ride stopped. He looked down again, but saw no body.

His awareness was now infinite, almost like being a flying eyeball that could see in all directions at once. The peace he felt was like floating in warm water with your ears submerged as you gently teeter along with the calming waves. A voice began to vibrate all around Sam – not in a hearing sense but in the way a guitar string must feel when you pluck it. Sam was the voice and the one hearing it.

The voice said, “Fear nothing, resist nothing.”

Sam wondered, “Is this God?” Instantly the voice said, “I am you and you are me and the only reason we can have this dialogue is because you’re not ready to join the Light.”

Sam thought, “But God, what can I do if I go back down there? Every day seems to by

be getting worse and worse. What’s the point?”

God paused, and then what he said next changed everything.

“You fool. You completely missed the whole point of your life. You could have made it any way you wanted, but you chose fear. You chose to carve out your little comfort zone and stay safe while you let all my blessings pass you by. Don’t you think I know you were suffering?

Why do you think I brought this upon you? I wanted to shake you out of your trance. Don’t you see that I made you in my image and, therefore, I have created a creator? You stopped creating when you fell asleep into the trappings of the human’s society. I created suffering to guide you, but you never woke up; you never broke the chains of illusion that fear (evil) causes. You made your life hell.”

“This means I’ve been asleep my whole life?” God stayed silent. Sam reflected further. “And if I would have just went for my idea of a perfect life, you would have had my back the whole time?”

God replied, “Through you I get to experience my own creation. Why would I want to feel the suffering that you decided to make real? Don’t you think I want to feel the radiant joy that’s possible within each one of you?”

Sam interrupted, “Then why don’t

you just make us happy all the time so you can feel it?”

“Sam, freewill is the only way I can experience true feedback through you.

Otherwise it’s like you’re holding a gun to someone’s head and then asking them to love you. Having no choice isn’t true love.”

“Damnit!,” Sam thought loudly. “I blew it. I blew my chances in life and now I’m this floating eyeball in the sky.”

God laughed. “You’re not an eyeball and you’re not in the sky, my son. Remember, I said that you weren’t ready to join the Light? I’m going to send you back to your so-called ‘miserable existence’ and see if you can figure it out. There’s just one catch: you won’t remember any of this. You’ll just remember seeing a light and some tunnel just like everyone else claims.”

“But why God? Why can’t I know?”

“Once again Sam, there is much glory in you eventually figuring it out for yourself. I will continue to send you clues in the form of suffering, and almost ‘dying’ usually serves as quite the wake-up call for most, so let’s just see how you do, my son.”

God sent Sam back into the world like a parent would send their child to the bus on the first day of school. Speaker. Spiritual Leader. This, and much more, is Hanakia Zedek, a dreadlocked mystic who was born in the streets of Brooklyn, NY, and now lives near the tree-lined banks of Minnehaha Creek in South Minneapolis.

But Hana, as he is called by friends, also is much less. Nothing, actually.

His philosophy: Everything comes out of Nothing. He explains that this philosophy “allows for the release of all that you hold onto – belief, fear, ego, hope, faith, worry, pain; all of which we have created and been trained to believe in; all of which create separation within ourselves and the Universe.”

“Not a thing truly exists, because it all comes from Nothing,” he writes on his website. “And The Nothing is all that really is…96 percent of the Universe is Nothing, 4 percent is that which we call everything…

You do the math! In between the cells of anything is Nothing, and when you break anything down, what you find is Nothing.”

Hana is not big on believing in anything.

He says, “It is not about whom or what you believe in. It is about what you do, what you choose to think, and how you choose to feel.

It is this which shapes your reality.”

There is something inexplicable in there that emerges into something. It is out of nothing that we come from. So that’s what I feel that we are.

But that’s where we don’t go. People are afraid of nothing. They are afraid of darkness. They are afraid of the void. Just like when we were cave people, we were afraid of the dark. So, of course, we are going to glorify the sun when it comes out, or anything that we can project into the heavens, because we feel that’s what saves us.

So that’s why I revert back into that darkness. That’s why I hold that space for people. It’s important for us to get there to really figure things out. It’s like wholly going down a rabbit hole. We have to go into this hole of self to become whole.

What’s in us that needs to come out is all the stuff that we’ve accumulated, or that’s been given to us, or that we’ve been told we are. We can go in there and excavate all of that stuff to find out what it actually is, and the more that we get out, the more that we get rid of, we find there really isn’t anything there.

When a child is born, that child doesn’t have the kind of information that we give it. As far as it knows, it just is. It may be identifying itself or not identifying itself. If we don’t say there is a God or laws or rules or all this stuff, who knows what that being would grow into, what that being would access as knowledge. I don’t feel that we are anything at all, but we give meaning and we assign meaning to a myriad of different things that we, ourselves, are projecting as real.

You said that Hanakia Zedek is a title.

What does it represent?

HZ: That shifts and changes. I used to be a minister. I used to be a religious leader.

I used to call myself a spiritual leader, but I know that it’s more than that. The title, for me, is someone who holds that

transformatory state, the state of change, the state of potentiality. I just created this name. A friend told me that in Hebrew it means “priest of light out of darkness.”

Oh, that’s interesting! That’s pretty much what it is.

Hanakia comes from three words: The German name Hans, which I really liked; Anika, which is a Gaelic name meaning beloved, another name I love; and the word Ki, the Japanese word for energy. Zedek is part of Melchizedek, who was known to be a priest king who had no beginning, no end, no mother, no father. I thought that was really interesting, so I wanted to capture that essence.

I created that name for a game, Dungeons and Dragons, when they said that I needed a name. So, as I’m creating this name I’m starting to feel different things about it, and then I’m playing the game as a magicusing human who turns into a wizard. And suddenly everything that was going on in the game started to happen in my everyday life. And then I realized, oh, I didn’t choose this name, this name chose me. I had to stop playing the game, because it got too

weird, things moving around the room and stuff like that.

So I just let myself go, the self that I thought I was, and I moved into whatever was emerging. When I’m not teaching or I’m not in the presence of another human being, there isn’t anything there. Even when I’m talking now, I’m not even thinking. I’ve trained myself not to trust what I think or not to rely on what I think, so I just let that go. Whatever is appearing in the present or whatever I am dealing with, that’s what I extrapolate from.

Even as a young boy, were you even reluctant to take on the story and the identity that we all create for ourselves as individuals?

HZ: My mother had my brother and I reading really early. I was reading and speaking around age 1. She had like flashcards and such, so by the time I got to 5 I was already reading whatever was available.

She had books on psychic energy, positive thinking, mind over matter, perception, some African mysticism, and some occult stuff, so I was reading that stuff, plus the

bible and other doctrines.

When I was younger I moved into the belief stuff, but moved very rapidly out of it because I saw that it was limited. There was only so far I could go. But I identified with the magic and the mysticism of Christ and Buddha. I also read comic books, the whole hero’s journey, super hero type thing, where the person is pressed up against something, usually themselves, and then the true self really emerges. That was my background.

When I was 13 years old, I had a severe car accident where I almost died. They were going to amputate my left leg. My leg was severed in three places. It was actually turned around, facing me. All the bones had moved to the bottom of the leg. First I asked them to get the leg out of my face. They turned it around and then took an x-ray.

They were like, “No, this has to come off.

It’s already dead. Gangrene is going to set in.”

I’m sitting there thinking about all the stuff that I read, all of the stuff that I can’t understand, and I was like, “Now, right now, this is where I have to use this.” So, I just pulled it together. I could feel the energy inside me, and I’m focusing in on the leg. I remember looking at a chart when they were wheeling me through the hospital, a chart of the human bone structure, and I was like, “Okay, that’s the way the bones in your leg are supposed to look. I know they don’t look like that now, but that’s the way they’re supposed to look.”

So, I just laid there and just saw that.

It wasn’t visualization or anything. I was dealing with the energy inside me and the leg itself – and then I started to see it. I saw the energy. It was like, “Okay, we are going to do this, we are going to do this.”

The doctors came back in to see where they were going to cut the leg, and they saw that all the bones had started moving back and fusing, and they are looking around. I’m not going to say anything, because they’d think I was crazy.

So they said, “Well, we don’t know what happened. Things are going to work out.

It looks like there is life back in the leg.” I didn’t say anything.

They said, “Well, we are going to put some hardware in there. You’ll probably walk with a limp.” They put the hardware in there, and sure enough, the bones grew right over it, as if it wasn’t even there. So it was really at that point when I was 13 that I understood, “Okay, this is what I need to be doing and eventually this is what I need to be teaching.” I didn’t then know what it would turn into, but I had a good hold on it then.

Everything kept pointing back to this emptiness, this space where this stuff just arose out of nothing. You don’t have to pray, you don’t have to hope, you don’t have to

do all of this stuff that we’re trained to do.

You sit, you wait, you feel it, and it’s right there. By that time, it has already read your intent, so it’s already doing what is necessary – probably before you even know what it’s doing. It’s outside of the framework of time.

When I talk to somebody about the Law of Attraction, what I say is that when you try to attract something, you actually repel it because you don’t realize that the connection is already there. It’s like when you go to reach for a feather in the air. You go to reach for it and it moves because the air pressure pushes it. Your pressure of want, your pressure of desire, pushes things away.

But if you are constantly receptive and in the space of allowance and awareness, you see the synchronicity, you see how things lined up, and you see that when you want something, that’s actually you telling you that that’s already available. The desire is saying, “Oh, this is part of who you are. All you have to do is allow it to happen.”

It’s hard to show people that they already do that. So I ask, “Okay, how many times in your life have things just appeared, for some weird, strange reason? You’ll think of somebody and the phone will ring?” What I show them is that by the time they get the inkling, they are actually striving for something they already have. All they have to do is just receive it, or allow it to emerge.

It’s complicated, because we have society saying one thing and religion saying something else and you have spirituality trying to mix everything together so everybody’s happy. But if you look at it in nature, the tree doesn’t want for anything. It just moves where it needs to. A blade of grass doesn’t pray. But you can see a blade of grass coming up through concrete. How? We have that information inside that is inherent, that shows us what we need to do, but we have been trained out of that. I just tell people to come back to that space inside them and

just remember when that is happening.

These unexpected experiences happen, and then we go, “This is coincidence,” or fear or doubt moves us out of it. I just move them into the certainty of it and show them how to cultivate that.

So it’s essential to become empty inside?

HZ: It’s not something we force. It an awareness that there is an emptiness that you shouldn’t be trying to fill. Just harvest that space. There is a book called, Cultivating the Empty Field written by Chinese Zen masters. That’s the great thing about Zen. How do you cultivate emptiness? How do you be nothing? It bends the mind. But that’s the objective, to bend the mind out of the way, so it’s more a realization that it’s okay to be alone, it’s okay to have nothing to do, it’s okay to have that space, because when we’re creating something, that’s where it comes out of. We have a blank page, we have an empty canvas, and then we decide. We get this feeling and then it starts bubbling and churning like anything else in the universe. It bubbles, it churns, it booms, and explodes, and then it is something that we identify.

Are you getting a sense that more people are moving into that space, or not?

HZ: I don’t know. I think this is where the variance in the paradigm shift is. You have sections that are holding back, and the movement forward is inevitable. I have clients who are religious and who are believers, and they come to me for different things. I know that they are not going to move out of that, so I show them how their belief can help and aid them.

The normal person doesn’t even want to hear the word spirituality or religion.

There’s this movement to something almost like common sense. You explain something

I feel somewhat disconnected, one foot here and the other elsewhere, but I do not have a sense of where that is.

My forehead is filled with cement, a gradual process that started when the sun rose and I feel different I feel shifted, but I do not know the catalyst or where I am going.

One by one small rain drops paint crude circles on the cement walkway, remnants of the impact make their own mark some distance away from the center of ground zero and over time the object we see changes completely, lost within or without awareness of the gradual shift taking place before our eyes and when the mind registers the wavering reality, the line between two worlds, I struggle to explain, desire to keep a tangible hold of the world I knew through an object, thought or emotion.

Amy Putkonen re what you do and say, and who you are, in alignment with your beliefs? For many of us, if we are honest with ourselves, the answer may be no. I believe that most people wish to live authentically, but many do not. I spoke with one of the most authentic people I know to get some ideas for how to try and capture some of that authenticity in your everyday life.

I think the cultural structures that define us sometimes limit our authenticity. What do you think, Judith?

Judith Froemming: When I question my limiting beliefs, I set myself free. While it appears that cultural structures define me, what happens if I ask if this is true? What if cultural structures don’t define and limit me? What if it is my mind that defines and limits me?

When I accept limiting beliefs, I notice that I feel overwhelmed, stressed, afraid and dis-empowered. When I believe that these same cultural structures don’t define and limit me, I feel calm, peaceful, grateful and I notice the abundance of options that I actually have.

I notice that it is my mind that defines me and sometimes limits my authenticity. I see now that cultural structures are neutral. They are there to create contrast so that I can see what I want to choose. I take responsibility for my choices, now.

Life in this dimension is a buffet. It is a table loaded with every conceivable dish. I can fill my plate with everything I don’t want, then complain at the checkout how terrible this buffet is, or I can fill my plate with everything I love and be grateful for all the wonderful, tasty choices I’ve made! I notice that this is a universe of contrast. I taste the pickles and I don’t like them. Good! Now I know not to take more pickles. I take the potato salad. I like it.

If I want to be authentic, I am willing to create a practice of Love.

Judith Froemming Good! I’ll be taking more potato salad. In a free-will universe, I notice what creates suffering or what creates joy and balance for me…if I’m awake. And I can choose.

How can people break free of these limitations without alienating the people they love?

JF: Byron Katie’s humorous, and pointed statement, “Other people’s opinions of me are none of my business,” powerfully challenges the impossible expectation of the above statement. Have you ever noticed that no matter how hard you try, you just can’t please everyone? I end up exhausted and resentful. Once I give up trying to control how someone else feels or how they feel about me, I can return to being.

There is a famous bible passage, “…You shall love your neighbor as yourself…” (NAS, Mark 12:28-31). It seems to focus on loving your neighbor. But does it? If I look more deeply, I begin to realize that I’m not capable of loving anyone any better than I’m capable of loving myself. If I try to avoid alienating someone by pleasing them at my own expense, I am not true to my spirit and I’m not loving myself or them. It may look good on the surface, but it’s not authentic.

Being true to my spirit might be interpreted as egotistical.

Outside of my consciousness, I do anything to avoid feeling unworthy. I shop, control, gamble, have sex, accumulate, drink, smoke, rage, and work to excess. This is what happens when I don’t believe I’m lovable enough to ask for what I want and need…until I wake up. When I love and accept myself, I can finally Love and accept you without expectations or attachment.

Can you teach people to be authentic?

JF: If I want to be authentic, I am willing to create a practice of Love. I am willing to question my limiting beliefs, belly breathe to calm myself, and be still. I listen to what my Body, Nature and Source have to teach me…be here now. I will raise my emotional intelligence, give up dualistic thinking and end war with myself. I do what gives me energy and stop doing what drains my energy…I become a formerly serious person and love that I won’t do any of this perfectly. It’s not required.

When I slow down, I cultivate awareness, which opens me to sit quietly and learn to actually live in my body. Acculturation has taught me to avoid pain, but now I lovingly observe my pain. My body teaches me as layers of tension gradually release, my neglected body heals and energy returns. I can only be authentic if I am present.

I am unattached to the outcome of my choice, I just notice the information coming to me and make the next choice. I act rather than re-act. As I remain unattached to the outcome, I’m free to be grateful for what this choice reveals to me, what it teaches me. It’s simple. I made up that it was more complicated than that.

I am my own best teacher. If I seek guidance, the wisest teacher will tell me that the answers are within. When I commit myself to the practice of Love, my mind and body open to previously unknown dimensions of life. I do not need to improve myself, I only need to remember myself. My intention to practice loving-kindness creates a life of joy and balance. It frees me from my alienation, suffering and distractions, and I’m finally able to love others as myself. An authentic life is in the moment, being true to my own spirit, my own journey.

Do you believe that self-esteem and authenticity are related?

JF: Self-esteem is rooted in accepting my original blessing or original nobility. When I am absolutely accepting of my being-ness, I love myself just as I am. My mind is quiet, my brain signals the production of healing chemistry and my body releases pain and tension and channels wisdom. I am grateful for this magnificent buffet and the opportunity to choose. Every choice I make is mine.

Self-esteem allows me to own my choices…all of them. When I own my choices, I empower myself to live authentically.

The authentic heart is the spiritually mature heart. It is not a perfectionist. It has compassion for my being rather than goals for my future. It loves what is. Authentic living

the art of

Nadine Penny hakespeare summed it up perfectly. And so, for the past year I’ve owned it. Ex-English teacher from England (and lover of Shakespeare) that I am, I’ve told people eyeball to eyeball who I am and what I do. Yes, I’m a wife, a mother, I’m creative, I love to read, to write, to work out and, that’s right – I’m a medium, and “therein lies the rub,” for I’ve yet to have been burned at the stake for telling my truth.

Being truthful about who I am and what I do has been a journey – a journey to authenticity. The journey started with my father. A man renowned for walking to the beat of his own drum, he was by turns, taciturn, old-school, proud, called a spade a spade and told it like it was. As he lay dying, I asked for his blessing on my work.

And so he dictated a letter that was read at his funeral, in which he described how proud he’d been of my teaching, and how he appreciated that my spiritual work was just ‘teaching of a different kind.” Also, how the healing we’d done together left him feeling “ten feet tall.” I couldn’t have asked for a more candid embrace of who I was and what I was doing. by

Still reticent Armed with my father’s blessing, it would seem that I’d found my place in life, but not entirely. Over time, I realized that I was still reticent about my work. I was a spiritual counselor, spiritual teacher, business owner, any term was better than “medium,” or perhaps that more infamous word, “psychic!”

Truth be told, the word “psychic” brought up images of Whoopi Goldberg in Ghost and I could hear myself silently protesting that I’d been to graduate school!

I was well read! I’d held respectable jobs down, whenever I encountered the eyebrow lift (or the lowered eyes) after describing my new vocation.

Taking stock, I recognized that I was unduly sensitive to perceived criticism, and in many ways I was my own biggest critic.

On the one hand, I loved my world. It was not just what I did, but who I was. On the other hand, the vision of my brother, bible in hand, mocking me as a witch (in spite of the fact I had been an avid church

chorister throughout my youth) combined with my family’s (and my own) value in the merits of education, made it hard for me to feel comfortable in this new skin. I was working in a field that some people thought was one step away from the devil’s work and it didn’t require any qualifications to boot to enter. How could I embrace this role authentically, without first owning the issues that I had with it?

Recognizing this discrepancy was my first step to accepting my truth. The second step was the realization that my work was beautiful. It offered healing to people whose hearts had been wrenched by grief. It offered direction to people who were directionless.

It brought heaven within touch to both my clients and to me, and I addressed my need for legitimacy and excellence by working from a proof-first perspective. In appreciating myself, my clients and the work I did, I began to see how truly fulfilled I had become and my steadfast refusal to see my vocation as a psychic-medium as anything but a temporary fix while my children were small, began to dissipate. In parallel, I began to receive greater acceptance for me and my calling from my close community, and that included my husband. That proved a turning point!

As time passed and as I grew to a place where I felt honored to work as a psychicmedium and honored that guides and loved ones in heaven chose me as the conduit through which to pass on messages of love, I noticed a secondary change take place.

This one dealt with boundaries.

One of life’s natural people-pleasers, I began to see a turnaround in the way in which I handled situations that imposed upon me and were difficult or unsettling.

As my business grew larger, I found myself beset with phone reading requests in the middle of the night, or email requests for freebies, or calls from people whose purpose was to tell me their life story and then hang up. Obviously, I had some boundary issues to deal with. As my husband said, would you call your hairstylist in the middle of the night, demanding a haircut and then asking for it to be free? Of course not!

Code of standards Over time, I was driven to clarify who I was and what I wanted from myself and my business. I began to realize that I had a code of standards. I knew what I expected from myself. I knew what I wanted for myself.

Did I know what I didn’t want from other people? Figuring that question out proved enlightening. I began to recognize I didn’t have to just say yes to everyone all of the time. In fact, I could even use the word no!

Finding the courage to say no has also been part of my journey to authenticity.

In learning to be comfortable with the word “no,” I’ve blitzed myself of those unneeded, unwanted, time-wasting calls and I’ve stopped trying to caretake people whose problems are not my own – and that’s huge in the work that I do. I know I’ve chosen a new way forward and it’s a path filled with light and with truth.

And so I say that the art of authentic living is a journey. It’s an inward journey that translates into outward changes that allow you to be yourself. In the words of Maria Shriver, “What matters most…is that I know myself – what my heart feels, what my inner voice is telling me!” Indeed, as Maria tells us, living an authentic life is entirely about being yourself, “not an imitation of anyone else, and not the reflection of (yourself) in anyone else’s eyes.”

And so today, as you walk through Target or Cub food, or as you wait for the elevator to take you to your office, take a moment to reaffirm yourself. Tell yourself you love yourself, tell yourself you matter and remind yourself of Polonius’ timeless words to his son Laertes, “to thine own self be true.” k Nadine Penny grew up in England and became a high school teacher. Authenticity in every moment

hen I was in my mid-twenties, I had a dream that I was chained in a narrow causeway, hunched over, and a brother was pouring gasoline on me.

He took a match and lit me on fire, while my other two brothers simply watched, condoning the experience.

At that time in my life, I was being kicked to the curb, disinherited and accused of being in a cult because I attended Lake Harriet Spiritual Community. Various people stabbed me in the back, betrayed me and placed darkness where there was light.

At the time, I was deeply injured by the betrayal of the people closest to me. Since then, I have gotten myself re-inherited, spoken my peace and moved on to a place of wholeness. I know now I cannot be harmed, no matter what anyone else does or thinks or says. The people who stood against me are reaping what they have sown. In a state of detachment, I know it is not my job to correct them any further.

Routinely in my life, I have been met with situations or people who attempt to affirm I don’t exist, because they aren’t willing to accept the information I am bringing.

The divine truth Now I regard it all as a comedy. I have grown immune to anyone who moves against me, to public censure, to social disapproval. I live in a knowingness of the Divine Truth within me, and I operate from there freely, regardless of whether anyone else understands or accepts it. I have found the freedom to live as myself, and let others enjoy the fruits of their own reality. Authenticity is an in-the-moment experience, and that liberates me to be who I am in every moment, in a state of non-judgement and self-acceptance.

The Divine Universe has put out a call to many souls to come to this aspect of creation – our

galaxy, our solar system, our earth – to anchor in changes to realign this corner of creation with the Divine. In her book Bringers of the Dawn, Barbara Marciniak discusses system busters, those who have come here to bust apart systems several hundred thousand years old; systems that ban, bar or block the Divine Light from coming to the planet. I am one of these people.

The actions I take can be as small as placing a phone call, which I know will render more than a few people unhappy, or as large as confronting an organization in which politics is attempting to block the light.

My dreams are a good source of information for me, and I often wake up after an informative dream, knowing what I need to do.

Rock of solidity Recently I have come to the awareness that my life purpose has been about “servicework at all costs.” This has meant that friendships, family, jobs, material security, etc., have taken a second place to anchoring light on the planet.

This has meant that my life has appeared to have little external purpose for decades. In lieu of typical support structures, I have become my own bastion, a rock of solidity.

I have felt the Divine Ecstasy that happens when old systems break apart so the new Divine Light can come back in. I choose this ecstasy over any limitation that others would choose or attempt to choose for me. I know the Divine Ecstasy that makes up my being and continually expands in our corner of the Universe.

Authenticity & the new living field beyond belief

Chris LaFontaine y column did not appear in last month’s issue of The Edge. ‘Ja miss me? Instead of writing I was busy painting and organizing furniture in my new home, the story of which appeared in the September issue as an example of Mutuality in the New Living Field.

After painting the living room five times (no, not a typo) to get the color just so, I am finally free to tackle what’s next.

People complain about packing when contemplating a move, but preparation of the new space and unpacking are the major tasks, in my view.

I’m definitely glad to be over the hump, so to speak. And, the New Field continues to surprise, as a recent hail storm triggered insurance to fund needed roof repairs and other projects. Guess I can stop wondering how I was going to pay for that.

The New Living Field is the name I use for the structure of consciousness we are shifting into as Duality disappears. For clarity, I use the term Duality to describe a framework of consciousness that splinters awareness into perceptions of separation. Duality, as I use the term, is distinct from the spiritual or philosophical doctrine of dualism. Dualism, to me, refers to a way the mind perceives the nature of existence, realizing that the perception of “dual” was formed from within the structure of Duality and its design of splitting and defining. It is the structure or matrix of Duality that I see dissolving. We are yet to find out if dualism survives, or any other isms we’ve created along the way.

In August I offered a list of seven emerging qualities of the New Living Field, described as best I can given our limited experience with this new reality and even greater limitation of words.

Previously I expanded, or perhaps expounded, on Mutuality. This time I’ll take a whack at conscious creation and how this living field is responsive to the desires of Heart and Soul.

Conscious creation may be a familiar phrase, but when heard do you envision an act with purpose, or a self-aware existence? I’m guessing the former, given the popularity of books and seminars on manifestation. Thing is, many of those teachings are from the old story and focus on using the mind to direct energy. Also, the process is by

outcome-based, often with an agenda motivated by fear or lack. Instead, what if Conscious Creation is experienced as a state of Being rather than seen as a method of manipulation?

Do we really know the deepest desires of our hearts and souls? I suspect not. We may think about how we wish things would be in our lives, but in our present state the mind’s vision is clouded by beliefs and perceived limitations. Authentic heart essence and embodied Soul know deep clarity, and my sense is that we’ve barely begun opening to and receiving a level of fulfillment unlike any we’ve known. If we can’t really know what fulfillment is, then what’s the plan? The plan is to continue the process of personal transformation that leads out of the matrix of Duality and into the matrix of the New Living Field. We’re already in that process, although each person is at a different place in the sequence.

The New Living Field is the alchemy of Life and Light. Dualism would split Matter from Spirit, but there is no separation in the new matrix.

We are individuated aspects within the whole, unified but simultaneously unique and sovereign. A paradox for the mind, perhaps, but you may have noticed that the need to understand or define is melting away as Duality dissolves. So, no problem. It is now the Field that orchestrates, and its design is to create fulfillment for the Creator within the Creation. That’d be you. And me. All of us coordinated in a stunning co-creation.

The more we transform and release our old stories, the more we step into greater authenticity and alignment with self. The more we choose alignment the higher our frequency goes and the more the field can “feel/read” us. The more we are read, the more fulfillment is delivered to us with ever decreasing effort on our part. We be and feel our authentic experience and the field responds, bringing fulfilling experiences we didn’t know were possible while providing simultaneous fulfillment to others.

Kathryn Harwig ecently someone asked me, “How do I know if the information I am getting is coming from my intuition or from my own self talk?” This is a very good question, and one that everyone who is serious about being intuitive needs to ask on occasion. It is a challenge to be intuitive about yourself and most of us find that it is far easier to give someone else a psychic reading than to give ourselves good intuitive advice.

Why? Because our own hopes, dreams, worries and fears tend to get in the way of our hearing our inner psychic, at least when we are asking for information for ourselves.

Many people solve this dilemma, at least in part, by consulting with other psychics.

But, we also want and need to use our intuition to make our own lives better. So, it is necessary, I think, to be able to distinguish the voice of our inner self talk and the quiet voice of our intuitive wisdom.

I attended a talk once where the speaker said that our unconscious mind was unable to hear the word “Not.” Her point was that when we make affirmations such as, “I do not want to be fat,” our unconscious mind only hears, “I am fat.” I don’t know if this is true or not, but, upon reflection, I realized that my intuition almost never uses the word “not.”

I will hear, for example, “take this route to work” rather than “do not take your usual route,” or, “make this telephone call” rather than, “do not call this person.” My “tips for better living” mind, on the other hand, is always telling me what not to do.

Thus, when I hear advice about what not to do, I am generally certain it is coming from the part of me that is fearful about something, rather than my intuition.

Another way I differentiate between intuition and self talk is that intuition speaks without emotion. It often “hits” out of the blue with no relationship to what I am doing or even thinking about. It comes as an emotionless statement in my mind, or a mental picture or even a physical sensation. Seldom, though, does it carry a strong emotional charge with it. Even when I see, in my mind’s eye, something that would normally frighten me, I am able to view it intuitively as if I am watching a movie that doesn’t involve me.

My inner voice, though, seems to thrive on emotion. When I think about something and ruminate on it, I tend to feel a lot of emotions. Whether the emotion I feel is excitement, joy, fear or worry is irrelevant. by

Question: I have been feeling depressed lately.

Can you speak about depression?

Feeling that type of emotion, along with a thought, is a clue to me that the thought is not an intuitive message.

Another clue is that intuitive information tends to come without any value judgment attached to it. My intuition gives me messages without any sense of “good” or “bad,” “right” or “wrong.” Sometimes, after getting this information, my conscious mind jumps in, placing judgment on what I have received. But, the actual vision or words or feelings never carry a sense of rightness or wrongness. That is because intuitive information is valueless. It is never right or wrong…good or bad. It simply is.

Not long ago I got an email from someone who had heard me giving intuitive insights to audience members. Her email said, “How do you differentiate between common sense and intuition?

When I listened to your intuitive messages, I thought, “This is just common-sense advice.”

She made a very good point. As I pondered that I thought, “Where does common sense come from?” We talk about “common sense” as if it is something we can define and understand, but what is it, exactly? I laughed to myself when I realized that common sense is just another way to describe intuition. It is that wiser part of ourself that “just knows things.”

Answer: If you have been feeling depressed, it more than likely indicates that you have anger repressed within you. If you want to come out of the depression, you will have to learn how to express anger in a conscious and responsible way. You will have to liberate the energy of anger so that it is no longer repressed within you.

Whenever you feel angry, it is an indication that you are not getting what you want or you are putting up with what you don’t want. The belief that you cannot have what you want, or that you have to accept what you don’t want, often forms in early childhood, and it then affects the whole of your life. This unconscious belief is often accompanied by a subtle and constant feeling of anger. It is like an undercurrent in your life.

Anger is usually a response to feeling hurt. If you want to free yourself from depression, you will have to allow the feelings of anger and hurt to surface.

You can clear lifetimes of anger in a few minutes if you hit the right note. It has nothing to do with catharsis. Then allow the hurt to surface. Have a good cry. You will feel much better afterwards.

To be in touch with feelings of anger and to allow the anger conscious and responsible expression is just as important a meditation as sitting quietly and watching the breath. It is impossible to remain present if you are carrying repressed feelings of anger and rage within you. Anger expressed consciously and responsibly leads to laughter. Anger repressed leads to illness, depression and even violence.

Researchers, whose results appear in the early online edition of the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that infants whose mothers consumed more than 4.5 grams of trans fats per day while breastfeeding were twice as likely to have high percentages of body fat, or adiposity, than infants whose mothers consumed less than 4.5 grams per day of trans fats.

The researchers investigated different fatty acids, but determined trans fats to be the most important contributor to excess body fat.

“Trans fats stuck out as a predictor to increased adiposity in both mothers and their babies,” said study co-author Alex Anderson, assistant professor in the UGA College of Family and Consumer Sciences.

Anderson explained that although breast milk is optimal for the health of infants, it could also contain high levels of trans fats, depending on the mother’s diet. A better understanding of how a mother’s consumption of trans fats may impact the health of her baby would aid nutritionists in making more accurate dietary recommendations to prevent chronic disease later in life by encouraging mothers to select a diet low in trans fats, he said. k

‘I’m Sorry’ and true intent dynamic living

Susan Just ’m sorry. Two very small words…and yet they can be the most difficult and challenging words to say or not say. Said at the right time and for the right reasons, they diffuse the trickiest of situations. Said at the wrong time or for wrong reasons, it becomes a glib shield of insincerity.

I was biking recently and it was interesting to see how many bicyclists entered the path without looking. I found myself being extra attentive and reminding people from time to time. Sometimes they were thankful and made adjustments, sometimes they said “I didn’t know” or “I didn’t see you.” I became perplexed. Yes, I know you didn’t know…If you did know that would be troubling. But “I’m sorry” or “oops” or “thanks” can be a more effective acknowledgement versus excuses.

My biking example is trivial given it’s just common courtesy, but it seems that common courtesy isn’t that common anymore. It’s becoming more apparent that people are afraid of being wrong. Saying “I’m sorry” is almost akin to saying “I’m stupid.”

The reluctance to say “I’m sorry” can be especially disconcerting in more significant relationships. In one of my first relationships, I quickly learned it was difficult for my loved one to say “I’m sorry.” It was almost a sign of weakness. We would go around and around discussing the issue until I realized all I wanted to hear was “I’m sorry.” But, it was not going to happen. I soon had to see “I’m sorry” in his actions and in other phrases that he used.

On the other hand, he sometimes felt I said “I’m sorry” far too easily and that it didn’t have any meaning. It was almost as if the words “I’m sorry” were a way to instantly make a situation go away, but no real change or dialogue would happen.

It’s ironic, for there’s a common phrase: “Love means never having to say you’re sorry.”

For most romantics, this means you love and are loved unconditionally – flaws, mistakes and all.

But there’s a broader interpretation: Love means not doing the things that would require saying “I’m sorry.”

Unfortunately, situations are not hot or cold, but they are degrees of temperature. We often have competing agendas, so someone is going to by

feel they’ve been compromised. This is where guilt comes in. Many people, perhaps unknowingly, wield guilt like samurai ninja pros. They guilt people into saying “I’m sorry” and do what they want. Beware of those individuals and their ability to live your life and theirs.

If you’re creating an authentic life, you do not have to apologize. You may need to explain, to help people understand, but it’s not necessary to feel sorry or guilty. It is just life. Many of my clients deal with guilt because they are not doing what their mom, their dad, their children, their spouses require. They have taken on too much responsibility for other’s emotions. Knowing when to say “I’m sorry” has set them free.

A friend mentioned recently that they dislike when people say, “I’m sorry you feel that way.”

It comes off as a back-handed apology, acknowledging someone’s emotions, but deftly sidestepping responsibility. It can also be patronizing.

In fact, sometimes people say ‘I’m sorry’ because they empathize with someone’s situation. But, how can you be sorry for something you never caused? That is taking on a karmic burden that is not necessary and depletes one’s energy.

When we say “I’m sorry,” it means that something is inherently unjust or unfair and it needs to be rectified. Many circumstances in life are unfortunate, but in the bigger scheme, justness or fairness is never part of the grand equation. In fact, it might even be more useful to say, “If I were God, I would never have allowed this to happen.” Hmmm, maybe not. But, maybe saying “I love you and I’ll be here for you” could be more nurturing and supportive.

Ultimately, it takes courage and awareness to say “I’m sorry” at the right time, with the right meaning and the right intent. And, for some, it takes some courage and awareness to not say it. As humans, we have many opportunities to practice being on both sides of that equation.

Let’s practice so we can lead a more authentic and compassionate life. k

 Nothing continued from page 18 and people don’t want to hear it anymore, and then you say something that makes sense, and they’re like, “Oh yeah, that makes sense.” We know there’s a change happening. You can see factions and you can see that movement. The election of Obama, the first black president, was a major shift.

Hillary was almost the first woman president. So, change is happening in cultures, in systems of belief, in family dynamics, in social structures. There is movement and there is going to be a shift out of the way things were. Change is inevitable.

Everything is in flux, moving from one state to a different state.

HZ: That’s a universal principle. We try to establish balance, but I don’t think that ever really happens. There’s always this imbalance, this pressing, and then the shift comes, and then the moment that the shift comes, it is already changing again. There’s a play on words that I do with people: “Nothing stays, and it’s the only thing that does. Everything changes, but nothing changes.” Not a thing changes, and it’s the nothing that creates that shift, but it stays the same. Nothing is the thing that remains permanent, but not a thing is permanent because these things are constantly in flux. It’s almost like this abstract field implodes or explodes or something happens. It creates waves, but it doesn’t change.

What happens is we become more connected. The more detached we are, the more we are not holding onto something, the more that we can see it for what it is and really appreciate it. That’s when the love happens, not when you’re forcing it.

Yes, there are things that we do, things that we create, things that we project, and there is a whole world construct that we think we are living in – which is awesome in itself – but if you let that stuff go, it is even more awesome. Because now you are realizing that almost sublime connection when you don’t really have to do anything.

Your presence, your understanding, your allowance, is part of what it is.

It’s just, we try. That’s the problem, man. We try so hard, and we don’t have to.

And we identify with the wave as It could be effortless, it really could be. I’m not saying that it’s not valid what people opposed to the nothingness.

aving a spiritual community accelerates your personal growth in ways you cannot imagine. The idea of being with spiritually minded people who care about the same things and are dedicated to deepening their relationship to God is exciting for some and possibly scary for others. It can be exhilarating and inspiring, because it increases the chances that you will see reflected in the eyes of others the real impact of your feelings, motives and intentions.

It is almost impossible to not be noticed when people are dedicated to being real and honest in relationship. Your actions and feelings are registered by others and known in ways you may not be used to in other group situations.

People dedicated to grow and learn spiritually are intent on awareness, consciousness and responsible interactions, so they are not inclined to be fake or phony. Fakeness is typical in most non-spiritual communities since easy cordialities are the norm while deep, mean-

ingful interchanges are rare and may even be feared. Some people can be frightened when anyone probes deeply into what they are feeling or thinking. Most people live in such isolated recesses that friendly interest is seen as an unwelcome intrusion into the substantially imagined privacy of their inner world.

In spiritual community, individuals are welcomed to share their true feelings in an atmosphere of mutual respect and understanding.

Since everyone is dedicated to being genuine and honest, there is no backstabbing or power trips displayed for or against members of the community. Only in an atmosphere of honesty and mutual respect can real spiritual community thrive.

The spiritual communities that seem most successful are those where there is a central, defining leadership with clear expectations of boundaries and spiritual aspirations. Spiritual community is not for the weak or unstable, as they will make other members into their parents or demonize those who are confident. People who have not worked through the basics of how to take care of themselves and be responsible are actually not ready for a real spiritual community.
