by Tim Miejan remember October 1995 like it was yesterday. I sat in a lower-level office in a non-descript Coon Rapids split-level home interviewing to become editor of The Edge Newspaper. I was just catching my breath after 12 years as a daily newspaper editor and reporter, and the man behind the desk, Edge co-founder Gary Beckman, was remarkably gracious, considering the circumstances.

I was dead tired. Just eight hours earlier, I was stalled with other interstate motorists north of Des Moines, stuck in a blizzard. I arrived in Woodbury about 3 a.m., not only anxious about getting the job, but proposing

to my girlfriend (and now wife). Love will blind you to such trivialities as checking the weather forecast before embarking on a seven-hour drive.

How I became part of this publication is just one of thousands of stories connected with The Edge’s legacy. I invite you to share yours.

I have a younger sister who has Down Syndrome and I know exactly what you are talking about. She is love personified through and through. She has such a gift and she helps me to focus on the good. I am so thankful for her. – Andrea Thelin, Akeley, MN Dear Editor, What a gift the “special needs people” who do not have all the answers demonstrate to us in their ability to be with whatever life’s challenges present. The interesting thing is that special needs children and people do not see what so-called normal people see. They see what normal people do not see. Yet, as they see what normal people do not, they don’t have to tell another how they should be or who they should be or how they should act or what they should believe or what is or what is not. They just demonstrate they are not just loving, but unconditionally accepting also.

Does genuine and authentic really exist on this planet? “Special Needs People” show us it does! The problem with so-called normal people is they tend to choose when to be genuine and authentic and who to be genuine and authentic towards. So-called normal people say one thing and then do another. They say they are interested and open from the heart and mind, and then demonstrate they are not being honest with another or their own Self and demonstrate it by their actions and choices.

It is easy to be open, loving and accepting of a “Special Needs Person” because of what they are to us. So I present to anyone who reads this: Is this not another example of “Pay It Forward”? So my question to each person is: “Are you paying it forward?” If you are not, what are you waiting for? Be the example, and demonstrate it in your life, in every moment! The buck stops with you. If all you do is receive and keep it for your Self, pay if forward, even if another looks at you like you are crazy or out of your mind.

Thomas Morton

T

homas Morton, a much-loved and respected member of the holistic community in the Twin Cities…and beyond, died Friday, March 2, in his home in Buffalo, MN, of cancer. He is survived by his wife, Jayne, and step-daughter Ashlyn.

He was a graduate of Central High School, Kalamazoo, MI, and graduate of Kalamazoo Valley Community College, where he studied jazz percussion.

Thomas Morton taught in the areas of accelerated learning, manifesting, quantum physics, sacred geometry and the application of universal law for the past 30 years. He was owner of Light Speed Learning, taught Accelerated Learning Techniques, distributed Roxtract Living Water products, and was a proponent of Hemi-Sync (Hemispheric Synchronization) techniques through the Monroe Institute.

His presence at many expos in the Twin Cities and beyond was uplifting to everyone who knew him.

Through Light Speed Learning, Thomas taught people to dramatically increase their ability to process information.

Eye of Horus hosts seminar on ancestral Hawaiian wisdom teachings on April 20 When Inette Miller — a single mother, former war correspondent, nice Jewish girl, and respected journalist — traveled to Hawaii for a week’s vacation, little did she dream that she would stay for a lifetime. And not a lifetime of luxury in paradise, either, but a grueling physical and spiritual journey that would tax every desire and concept she ever held dear.

Quantum Techniques An interview on an advanced form of energy medicine with Heidi Gilman and Dr. Thomas Miller

H

eidi Gilman suffered from auto-immune issues since the age of 12. It began with a sledding accident in which she injured her neck, back and jaw. Within weeks, arthritis quickly spread down her spine and to her joints.

She developed psoriasis and Raynaud’s disease. By the time she turned 33, she developed digestive and respiratory system failures, migraines, body and organ pain, heart pain, an irregular heart beat and weight loss. She developed a severe reaction to her environment. She began reacting to medications, food, air and clothing.

“My body started to smell like it was rotting,” she says. “I had three children and got to a point where I was unable to care for them, I was 93 pounds and knew I was dying.”

Dr. Thomas Miller, a chiropractor in private practice in Coon Rapids since 1981, realized after the fact that he was bitten by a very small tick in 1990, resulting in Lyme Disease. He began experiencing symptoms — headaches, profound fatigue, memory loss, changes in vision, ringing in the ears, heart palpitations, pain — three years later and it took months of trips to doctors and thousands of dollars in tests to receive a diagnosis, and a year of antibiotic therapy to put the disease into remission.

“The incredible frustration I experienced initially in dealing with the medical system (see a specialist, wait to have a test, wait to get a result, see another specialist, etc.) and the feeling of helplessness at not being in charge of my own health motivated me to search for answers,” he says. “Over the ensuing years, I have spent hundreds of hours in seminars on nutrition, acupuncture, diagnosis, lifestyle and diet modification, herbal therapies, internal disorders and visceral and cranial manipulation. I even bought a coil machine, an instrument that produces an electromagnetic impulse that vibrates the bacteria to death. All of these things helped to some degree, but I never really felt well.”

Both Heidi and Dr. Tom are now well, and both cite a new form of energy medicine called Quantum Techniques as

the reason their bodies are now back in balance.

“Our intention and goal here,” says Quantum Techniques co-founder Stephen Daniel, “is to teach people how to heal themselves and others by revealing to the body information that the healing intelligence has lost track of.

We believe that what the body’s healing intelligence can see, it can heal.”

Relatively new, Quantum Techniques was created only a dozen years ago, and major improvements have come within the past two years. Described as a cousin of Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), even “EFT on steroids,” Quantum Techniques begins with one important assumption — that the body is a selfhealing organism — and its focus is on why the body is not healing itself.

Practitioners use applied kinesiology (muscle testing) to scan a multitude of frequencies to improve the flow of energy throughout the body.

Heidi, now certified in Shiatsu Oriental Bodywork Therapy and Hypnotherapy, and a practitioner of Reiki and Qigong, assists Dr. Tom at the Total Health and Healing Clinic in Coon Rapids in offering Quantum Techniques to clients — and their animals. Heidi and Dr. Tom recently spoke with The Edge about this new form of energy healing.

What is Quantum Techniques?

Heidi Gilman: Quantum Techniques is a

form of energy healing that works with the body’s energy field. It actually opens blockages in the body to restore its own natural healing state. We use the radiances from the chakra system and other energetic systems, which we call brain engines and informational pathways, to conduct a question-and-answer with the body.

The client presents with issues they

have going on, what they want to work on, and then when they do that we make a connection with them energetically.

Dr. Thomas Miller: The idea behind Quantum Techniques is if the body can see a problem, it can heal it — and the power that made us is the power that heals us. Essentially with Quantum Techniques, we are looking for energy obstructions, blockages, restrictions and constrictions that are resulting in issues developing within the body.

In a general sense, what causes these blockages?

Dr. Tom: That’s a good question. A major

factor in blockages is trauma — physical trauma or emotional trauma — and another is toxins. We live in a toxic environment, so we find toxins that people are in contact with or ingesting or inhaling or that have been injected into their bodies. We look at foods that are toxins. That’s a really common thing.

Heidi: People may think they are eating very healthy, but they could still be eating one particular food, even if it’s a healthy organic food, that to their body is toxic for some reason. We need to find that out.

Otherwise, that will keep reversing anything that they do to try to heal themselves.

Dr. Tom: When we talk about reversing in Quantum Techniques, what we’re saying is that the energy goes backwards. I like to think of it more as a blockage or restrictions, constrictions. Whatever happened, the energy in the body is just not coherent. We’re looking to bring coherence to the body’s energy field.

And so anything that causes a reversal in energy prevents healing. So, if I’m eating a food every day or I’m breathing a chemical every day that is causing my energy to be reversed, my body can never heal.

Heidi: Another thing that is very common is the body’s fight-or-flight response that can be enacted from a present emotion or trauma or a past emotion or trauma. We even work with generational emotions or traumas that your body holds energetically.

Dr. Tom: Yes, and then we test for pathogens — bacteria, fungus, yeast, mold, parasites, protozoa and microplasma.

Those things may or may not currently be in the body. Often what will happen

is that the body will eradicate a pathogen, but the energy or frequency of that pathogen is stuck in the energy field in the body. If we can clear that out, then the energy can flow freely and the person can heal.

Heidi: Some people have chronic symptoms due to a virus or bacteria that their body has been carrying for years sometimes.

Dr. Tom: One of the coolest things is that when we do Quantum Techniques, we are not treating someone. We are talking about allowing the body to heal. We are really not doing much, other than some reconnection work in the body. Primarily what we’re doing is enabling the body to heal itself.

So you’re finding ways to make sure that the energy flows everywhere throughout the body, smoothly.

Heidi: A person may have

particular symptoms that they want to work on, but we look at the whole energy field of the body. A person may not have a given symptom yet because it hasn’t come forward to their conscious mind yet. There are many different fields of energy within the body, and when we do a session we always ask at the end if we have 100 percent of the information necessary for the body to heal from a particular field that we’re working on.

Dr. Tom: With regard to chronic illness, the interesting thing is that symptoms are the body’s refusal to live with a lie. If there’s something wrong, we will have symptoms.

Heidi and I got into Quantum Techniques because both of us had a lot of symptoms for a long time. I had Lyme disease for 20 years, and I did everything known to man except contract malaria.

I did antibiotics for years and years and years and years and sort of kept it under control, but it was the Quantum Techniques that really helped me to heal from that — and a lot of it had to do with

resolving some emotional things that were kind of stuck in my energy field and then clearing out a whole mess of pathogens that I had, viruses and parasites.

Heidi: The key is re-establishing the internal communication that allows the body to identify problems and heal them.

Dr. Tom: Clearing the acupuncture meridians re-establishes internal communication, and then the chakras and the brain engines create a reconnection to the Universe.

Heidi: And we also try to help people to find the connection with the soul’s energy and see it for themselves and learn to make that connection.

Dr. Tom: There’s the body, mind and Spirit, and so there’s the subconscious, conscious and superconscious mind.

Traumatic things get stored away in the subconscious or in the body, and so what we try and do is open up the door to shine some light into the subconscious area to help those things resolve.

Heidi: We bring it into the awareness of the body, because the body has lost its awareness.

Do you focus on symptoms that are of most concern to the client, or can you with a broader swath take care of a number of things for them that they aren’t aware of yet?

Dr. Tom: We do it both ways,

actually. The first visit we try and take a broad sweep so that we find all the things that are toxins that may or may not be reversing the body’s energy. Then, once we get all the toxins cleared out so the body’s energy does not reverse, we can really go in and find some of the deeper issues.

Essentially with Quantum Techniques, we’re looking for the energy pattern that is in some ways disrupting in an individual — and we don’t even necessarily have to name it as an emotional thing. We just have to feel it and find it. Then what we do April 2012 edge magazine

THE EDGE INTERVIEW is build an acupuncture and chakra code that helps to clear or neutralize or normalize that energy field. We give the client a code that they read, or they tap, that continues the healing process. Each time they do that, they give themselves a treatment. It’s something they do on their own to keep their energy moving.

When someone comes in or if you do it over the phone, how does a typical session begin?

Heidi: The first thing we do is find out what they would like

to work on, and then we have to go through some techniques to make sure that their body is online and that their energy is not reversed, that their brain engines and informational pathways are open, their meridians are open, chakras are open, everything is open, and they’re balanced energetically.

Dr. Tom: And we ask the client if they’re 100 percent on board in healing that. It’s not surprising to find that on some level, people are not. Then what we have to do is get them into balance and find whatever is blocking their intent to be well.

Why are you passionate about providing Quantum Techniques to yourself and others?

Dr. Tom: That’s an easy one, because it’s what helped me

dramatically — and I’m a pretty hard-core science guy, so it was hard for me to accept that Quantum Techniques was a real modality.

The first time I did it, I talked to this guy over the phone.

First of all, I didn’t believe that you could do anything over the phone. Second of all, the guy lived in Hawaii. And then he was going to give me some code that I was going to read and it was going to help me. I didn’t believe it for a second.

But after a few days I started feeling better. I think it’s because he cleared out all those pathogens out of my head so there was less of a load on my immune system. And so I just kept going back. Every couple of months I would call him up and we’d do a code and I would feel better.

Then Heidi and I bought the materials and started training

Here’s the deal: I think no matter what field of health care you’re in, you have the people you just can’t help. You just can’t get them well no matter what you do. To me, that is tremendously frustrating. And, I was one of those people.

Heidi: What was so frustrating in having a chronic illness was that you feel like you do not have control of your body. You never know how it’s going to react. I had environmental illness extremely bad, along with auto-immune illness and arthritis, and it felt like I was always fighting my body. I always had a fear of how bad it was going to get and what would happen next.

With Quantum Techniques, I don’t have that fear anymore.

Sea salt to taste Enchiladas

1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil 1 small onion, finely diced 3 cloves garlic, crushed 2 teaspoons cumin 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 2 small zucchini, diced small 2 cups chopped fresh spinach 1/2 cup chopped cilantro 2 to 3 cups shredded cooked organic chicken (about 3 chicken breasts) Brown rice or whole grain wraps depending on how you’re preparing this dish.

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Oil a 9 x 13-inch casserole dish.

2. Sauce: Place all of the ingredients for the sauce in the blender and blend on high until smooth.

3. Filling: Heat a large skillet over medium heat, add olive oil and diced onions for 5 minutes or until soft. Add

the garlic, cumin and sea salt, and sauté another minute. Remove from heat. Add raw spinach, zucchini and cilantro. If making the chicken over rice, simply combine the shredded chicken with the veggie mixture and mix well with the sauce.

4. If making enchiladas, wrap the chicken mixture mixed with some sauce in a tortilla and then cover with additional green sauce. Cancer: a Disingenuous Disease

Letting go: The danger of repressed emotions

W

hile educating myself about the traditional medical approach to “fighting” cancer, I also searched within to discover what I knew and felt about the disease. Within a week of my diagnosis, I spoke with Carol Burling, program manager of Pathways Health Crisis Resource Center. Ironically, I had been one of their providers for over two years; now I sought support as a participant. One specific suggestion Carol had was to consider Katherine Pohlman’s Health Coaching sessions.

Katherine helped get my head and heart around the reality of having a cancerous tumor. A discovery I made was cancer’s passive-aggressive nature — it stealthily takes over your immune system, preventing the immune system from identifying cancer cells as unhealthy and dangerous. I saw the parallel between the passive-aggressive nature of cancer and the nature of my personal and professional relationships.

My pride had gotten the best of me. A favorite NeuroLinguistic Programming (NLP) tool of mine is reframing. I believed I could reframe my perspective of others’ manipulative behaviors and still remain healthy and whole.

Wrong.

One must also let go of the anger, pain and loss, or even find a safer, more nurturing environment to live and work in. As Bruce H. Lipton states in his book The Biology of Belief, our environment has a great impact on us. I had allowed others to tell me what I needed to do, how to do it, and who I needed to be. Then when I was successful I was frequently undermined for having succeeded.

In 2011, I came to the end of my creative rope and was quickly slipping off the end — mentally, emotionally and physically. Helplessness and hopelessness enveloped me and was exacerbated by sleeplessness.

Sleep deprivation took its toll.

Desperately I needed a pattern interrupt; it came in the form of prescription medications — anti-depressant, antianxiety and sleep meds. Sixty days

later I was mentally and emotionally stabilized — just as the pea-size tumor in my left breast was determined to be cancerous. Cancer was setting up its home base, preparing for its grand assault on my body.

The first weeks

During the first weeks while I had meetings with the surgeon and the two oncologists, I weaned myself off the sleep and anti-anxiety medications and reduced the anti-depression medication by half.

Feelings and emotions are two of my more developed intuitive senses; I had realized that the medications prevented me from accurately accessing these important senses. I now needed my intuition more than ever!

On regaining my intuitive senses, I could own my belief that cancer is a disease of resentment and helplessness. Cancer can grow when there are repressed and unresolved emotions. I took inventory and found plenty of suppressed emotions, many from childhood.

In my young world, there was little space to express and clear away my emotions. It seemed that others had a more difficult time dealing with life’s challenges. I became a caretaker, getting others through crisis only to have my own feelings and disappointments pushed aside. I stuffed them, not knowing what to do with them, not knowing the long-term ramifications of not cleaning house on those old repressed memories and emotions.

I no longer have the luxury to haul around that old baggage. One surprising hurt I uncovered was being too young to go on a Girl Scout trip to Canada; I needed to be 16 but my October birthday prevented me from going on Emotions continued on page 14  April 2012 edge magazine

Another pain came from being terminated from a job. Although, I had successfully grown the organization’s business, my continued success was thwarted. It didn’t matter that I had multiple times met and exceeded the company’s objectives (and their expectations), only to have the tools to do my job taken from me. Sometimes others don’t play fair.

Others may have power or influence over you and use it against you, much like cancer taking over your immune system. Ditch that disappointment! I have more important things to deal with right now — like getting over cancerous thoughts that spawn diseased cells.

Follow my heart

Freeing myself from these past losses and disappointments lightened my spirit. This gave me the courage to follow my heart despite the fear I see in others. When I say, “I have a cancerous tumor in my breast,” I now recognize three distinct responses: pity, fear, or encouragement.

Pity is a reflection of my own hopelessness. In the relatively new field of Pyscho-NeuroImmunology, it is believed that people who contract cancer have a hopelessness mindset.

When a person responds to me with pity, I search for my self-pitying leaks and quickly bail them from my body lest I sink my own ship.

Those who fear cancer usually shrink away, avoiding contact as if they might catch it from me like a cold. It’s best to let them go; their fear will only muddy my environment. Be aware of environ-

Pathways: Reclaiming lives from a life-threatening Illness

im Thorpe, executive director of Pathways Health Crisis Recourse Center, shared this information when I asked him: “What are several ways Pathways helps people reclaim their lives from a life-threatening illness?”

“At Pathways, the overarching goal is to empower and educate those with lifethreatening or severe chronic illnesses,” he said. “Often we hear, ‘Tell me what to do’ when a participant first arrives; to tell them what to do, however, becomes very one-sided and does not allow the participant to recognize what is best for them from a firsthand perspective. So our response is not to tell them what to do, rather to guide them along the process of self-selection, assisting them in the process of choosing the various one-on-one or group sessions that they think may be right for what they are being challenged with physically or emotionally.

“During new participant orientation, I often tell participants that the first program they sign up for may not ‘part the curtains’ for them from a significant healing aspect; it may not be until the second or third service they take that they experience the physical or emotional shifts for which they are looking; but, within this shift, we can then help show them that they — not-us — found the place and methods that allowed the improved health shift to occur. This is the beginning to helping participants renew — and reclaim — their lives.”

space, I am mindfully present, and I communicate authentically with a client. The client is free to explore and find their own way.” And this is exactly what I experienced as one of her participants.

Two artists connect, create collaboratively for the whole

by Michelle Glaser & Snow Angel ecently, we collaborated to create an album of chakra mirror math meditations, a series of guided visualizations that use the heart-opening power of music to address each of the chakra mirrors. Your seventh chakra is mirrored by your first and 7 + 1 = 8. Your sixth chakra is mirrored by your second and 6 + 2 = 8. Your fifth chakra is mirrored by your third and 5 + 3 = 8. The heart chakra remains and 4 + 4 = 8. This secondary fourth chakra is your soulmate’s heart chakra, your eighth chakra; and your heart chakra is their 8th chakra.

This means that anything you do to open your heart will open your soulmate’s heart, as well!

Michelle: I first met Snow Angel (Sarah to me and her friends and family) in 2008 and first learned of the chakra mirror math at the Forgiveness Festival she held that April at Lake Harriet Spiritual Community (LHSC).

Snow Angel: Yes, that night we learned that we share a love of Michael Jackson and moonwalking, so we often break into “Man in the Mirror.” Michelle actually can moonwalk!

Michelle: At that time, I knew that I wanted to do something with my classical piano training but wasn’t sure what. My wife, Rowan, encouraged me to compose original music, and my first album, … And the Piano Fell in Love, was born in January 2009.

Snow Angel: I went to the live performance of the album at LHSC that same month and it was fantastic. While Michelle played the song “Daybreak,” it felt as though waves of light and sound were washing over me, like an auric shower of cleansing, healing light — and sound. I realized she was a conduit for divine love expressed as sound waves and that her music could open the heart chakra.

Michelle: I went on to record three more albums, Between Time and Dance, Trance & Romance in 2010, and Co-creating with the Divine: Piano Improvisations in 2011. Both tracks on that last album were recorded in one take as I co-created with the Universe for twelve minutes, letting the divine come through my heart and into my hands.

Snow Angel: On three separate occasions, I have experienced Michelle’s music open my heart to a greater degree, and I often find myself returning to her music for inspiration while writing. I had long imagined this

collaboration of heart-opening music and heart-opening guided visualizations, but it wasn’t until January 2012 that I reached out to Michelle.

Michelle: Sarah had sent me a copy of her new book, Chakra Mirror Math, after it came out last fall. After the New Year, I sent her a CD with two previously unreleased tracks, and next thing you know, we were meeting at the Tea Garden. I love how comfortable and easy it is to talk to her; she lights up a room with her energy and bright smile. Her Forgiveness Method really resonates with me, as well as her teachings and attitude about life, angels and God. When she told me her idea about our collaborating together, I knew this was a perfect fit.

Snow Angel: One of the many great things about working with Michelle is that she is very organized. I am more of an into-the-wind kind of person. Michelle has taught me that simply typing up a play-by-play sequence for our events is clarifying and beneficial, not only to her so we are on the same page when it comes to the vision for the night, but it helps me, too.

Michelle: And I love how Sarah is so focused.

Another advantage for me is that she is an excellent public speaker. When you take her eloquent style and mix it with my ability to be a conduit for healing music, the possibilities are endless.

The Simple Joys of Fresh & Local

by Loris Sofia Gregory mell the fresh fragrance of spring as you wiggle your winter toes among tiny green sprouts in fertile soil. Listen to the popping ears of succulent sweet corn growing knee high by the 4th of July.

Feel the amber waves of whole grains swaying in the cooling breeze of late summer. See shiny bright red apples ripening to perfection and take a whiff of fresh apple pie cooling on your kitchen windowsill.

Wait a minute! I must be in a fairy tale — or Disney’s 1958 film “America the Beautiful.”

What happened to our fresh, local and safe food?

Just this week in “Farm to Table,” I read that a judge dismissed a case of Organic Seed Growers vs. Monsanto.

Since the 1990s, Monsanto has been aggressively suing America’s farmers for alleged violating their GMO seed patents. Seed and pollen drift from genetically engineered corn, soybeans, rice and other crops, contaminating neighboring fields and farmers are then liable for patent infringement. Hundreds of farm families have not and cannot survive these lawsuits.

Here’s another snapshot of food reality in Dakota County where I live. The pantry food shelves of Eagan & Lakeville Resource Center served almost 10,000 families in 2011, a challenging 79 percent increase over 2010. Many ongoing customers are families with hungry kids and senior citizens. With 10,000 baby boomers turning 65 each day, “60-somethings” needing healthy fresh food will surpass those under age 15 by 2016.

After years of persistently planting seeds about the beautiful necessity of community gardens, Pat Schoenecker gathered three other community collaborators — two students and faculty at the School of Environmental Studies in Apple Valley, and me — in the Spring 2010. We started nudging an intergenerational organic garden into reality. Last year at this time, we launched “Nourish to Flourish,” a free multimedia gardening series sponsored by Valley Natural Foods of Burnsville and ISD 196. From spring to frost last fall, we harvested a healthy bounty of fresh and local vegetables for ourselves, our families and friends, a neighboring food shelf and an appreciative women’s shelter.

Late last fall, I read that the city of Minneapolis was forming a Homegrown Minneapolis Food Council, after three years of healthy local food initiatives, thanks to hundreds of volunteers. When I read, “Must be a resident of Minneapolis,” I was envious!

I was already part of a small group of southmetro folks discussing ideas for a healthier community, originally brought together in March 2010 by Gary Johnson, community relations developer of Valley Natural Foods.

Even though it was just Gary and me at our October meeting, “Homegrown South” as a grass roots, healthy food network in the south metro started sprouting.

A small team of volunteer collaborators started taking the next steps, including monthly meetings and Facebook page (www.facebook.com/groups/homegrownsouth), and our community is starting to blossom. Homegrown South now has the potential to network hundreds of farmers, gardeners, organizations, businesses, city leaders and inspired food activists in support of healthy fresh and local food for all eaters in the south metro Twin Cities. In collaboration with Valley Natural Foods, Homegrown South hosted a successful “Community Food Day” on March 10.

The simple joy of eating delicious, nutritious food is a great reason to support fresh and local food. Buying and eating fresh, locally grown, chemical-free food is not only creating optimal health for us and our families. It is also the best proactive investment we can make in the economic, social and environmental health of our communities, our planet and generations to come. We started out with five lovely ladies, dropping down to four and then to three. What was the universe telling us?

We could move on as The Power of Three. We could still exist and still have what we started out with. Sadness in losing a part of us is real, but we continued and remained strong.

We have found when we work together as The Power of Three that we bring more compelling and exciting messages from Divine to enlighten the journey of those who seek us. Such are the rewards of being a collaboration of three.

When we bring our unique selves together, we create an amazing energy. Community building through collaboration

by Deanna Reiter hile staying at my friend’s house in California, I overheard her daughter’s friend on the phone saying, “Collaboration is over, Mother!”

I thought, Wow, that’s a big word for a high school junior!

And then I thought, Too bad she’s not willing to work with her Mom anymore.

I laughed long and hard when I later found out that “Collaboration” was an afterschool study hall program that the girls participated in once each week. It had ended about ten minutes before the phone conversation I’d overheard.

The story sticks with me years later not only because of the humorous twist it took in my mind, but also because it reminds me of how much I enjoy collaboration with others. I enjoy the subtle ways we collaborate — with other drivers as we navigate the highways, with friends and colleagues on new ideas and

projects and with neighbors to maintain a safe community.

Collaboration occurs all around us. We find collaboration in nature between members of a species, like dolphins, and collaboration between different species, like bees and flowers or herons and hippos. The human body is another great example of collaboration. The glands and organs within the body respond to each other and take necessary action to keep everything working smoothly.

Many businesses also collaborate with each other.

Airlines are a perfect example of this. They work together to get passengers to their next destination efficiently. If they didn’t, there would be a lot of unhappy people at airports when flights are delayed or canceled. Two gas stations on a corner typically generate more business than one does when it monopolizes the corner.

But despite so many great examples of collaboration in our world, many people still

believe that there is a great need for competition. Indeed, competition is a very necessary component in nature, which insures that species populations stay in check and the strongest genes reproduce. It is seen in many mammals, such as in wolves and in humans, that when an organism is stressed or resources are scarce, the reproductive system is typically the first system to shut down as the body’s systems compete for energy.

Competition can be valuable in business to offer the best quality in products and services at the most reasonable cost.

But regardless of the role competition plays in nature and economics, we can almost always achieve greater results when we choose collaboration over competition. I fully became aware of the substantial effect of this in college as an NCAA Division I athlete. In cross country running, my coach taught us to run past our teammates in a vastly different way than our opponents. In passing a teammate, we were taught to run alongside them and encourage them to come with us. In passing an opponent, we were taught to zoom past them as fast as possible and to “steal” whatever energy we could from them while passing so that they wouldn’t entertain the idea of joining us. I felt the effects of this maneuver from all vantage points to know that collaboration multiplied our energy and competition depleted it.

I remember this example today when I organize workshops and classes in Minneapolis. Many other public speakers, authors and holistic healers come together to help market, teach and promote the events. The more people that get involved, the more the energy multiplies. Collaborating works well, because everyone has special talents and strengths and a unique viewpoint on executing tasks.

One of the best outcomes of collabora-

tion is the community that forms and the multitude of positive effects that ripple outward.

Community: • Provides a support system • Provides a common ground to share information, opportunities and services • Builds relationships and partnerships within and beyond the group • Develops certainty in yourself for tasks completed successfully • Develops respect in others for roles taken in the community • Aligns common goals • Strengthens existing abilities and awakens latent talents • Is fun!

Collaboration for the alternative and holistic medicine and healing community is vital now as we move toward gaining widespread acceptance in America. In the last decade, the therapeutic alternatives offered by the holistic community have gained more awareness in the media.

In the Upper Midwest and beyond, it is up to us to find solidarity in our holistic community so that we can continue to be a voice and a presence to gain a stronger foothold in America.

It is time for us to set aside the idea of competition and to form an alliance to inspire a very long-awaited and necessary change in making preventative health care a viable alternative for everyone.

Cardinal Rules

We call the cardinal pair Carlo and Consuela.

The scruffy cardinal babies, buff and almost-crimson, crests not quite triangular are Carlito and Consuelita.

The squirrel with a lame back leg has a tail that always bends to the right, often belying his intended path.

Nonetheless, his name is Right Turn Only.

We don’t name them to lay claim to them.

Like parents, we name them in the hopes they’ll return.

Dangling with purpose, its motion set to keep balance with the vibration.

I look out from this peak above the tree-line further up the slope passing through low-level clouds and into a charged atmosphere, a place forgetting about sea-level looking further beyond here where the spiritual and mystical are common-place and work constantly, surrounding your physical being, breaking you piece by piece until left as a shred of your previous self. cold. cold descends from crystal blue fading from the orange horizon. cold bones.

Wolf Dream

She was learning about dreams studying Jung She told me If you’re frightened of a bear ask yourself what message the bear is bringing The wolf’s charcoal body bumped my right calf as it trotted down a pine-bordered path on a warm day in my subconscious I didn’t need to ask what the wolf’s message was I was just happy for the visit

I look over the shreds and watch them freeze and become ice, encased, I can no longer use them. Now I see through the pieces I was made of and wonder what do they see. Crouching on the ice and rock I look through one toward other peaks with the moon beginning to rise and briefly I am no longer here, in this plane.

The snow gods and angels rise from the crevasses and deep blue twists and fades intermingles with fine mist unseen.

A friend just wants to say goodbye Non-Christians are target of discrimination, sadly, in this nation of equality

by Todd Berntson he past 24 hours have been almost surreal. I was sitting at the dinner table with some friends at an Indian restaurant when I received a call from my father that my cousin Brad was dead.

Brad was four years older than me and had been my superhero while I was growing up. As a kid I used to tell my friends incredible tales about the amazing feats that my cousin could do, as though he was some mythical figure with superhuman powers.

Truth be told, in a lot of ways he kind of lived up to that. He was very good looking, smart, funny, incredibly strong, and was one of those guys that everybody liked. So, when I was told that Brad was dead, I was in shock.

Unfortunately, that was only the beginning of the bad news.

A short time later, I received another call informing me that my father and I would not be allowed to attend Brad’s funeral because I was Wiccan and Brad’s wife didn’t want me to “pollute their church” with my evil presence.

I was dumbfounded by this. Even as I write this, I still have a hard time believing that this really happened.

Does being Catholic mean that you cannot be accepting of other spiritual paths? What makes Wicca, which is one of the most gentle and forgiving spiritual paths, so “evil”? Would Jesus have barred me from saying goodbye to a deceased family member because I wasn’t Catholic?

Unfortunately, this is not the first time that this kind of thing had happened. Only four months prior, Brad’s father, Bruce, was found dead in a hotel room. When I attended

his funeral at the church, most of the family would not even look at me or say hello. During the luncheon that followed the funeral service, I stood up to say a few kind words about my recently deceased uncle. As I looked out at the faces in the crowd, I could see several people looking at me as though I was some kind of leper. There was an almost palpable look of disgust on many of their faces. As we left, both my father and I commented on how unwelcomed we felt.

This whole situation is very disturbing on so many levels. How can any spiritual tradition, be it Christian, Hindu, Shinto, Pagan or Jewish, justify denying someone the fundamental human need to say goodbye to a deceased family member? How can the Wiccan spiritual path, which is founded on the reverence for all living things and celebrating the diversity of life, be considered so disturbing, so evil, that followers of the Catholic faith can feel justified in shunning members of their own family?

Although I am not a Christian, I often reflect a famous prayer attributed to St. Francis where he speaks: “Lord, grant that I may seek rather to comfort than to be comforted; to understand, than to be understood; to love, than to be loved.” Perhaps if those who so vocally profess their piety would simply follow their own prayers, the world would be a place with much more comfort, understanding, and love.
