ecades from now, textbooks describe the early 21st century as a time of unparalleled earth changes, widespread collapse of global financial markets, as well as incredible technological innovations in social networking and medical science. The texts inform students that there were mass casualties due to war and natural disaster, and topics of the day ranged from terrorism to safe food and drinking water. But teachers, knowing full well that history books only tell part of the story, turn to the oracles, the intuitives, to relay the true history of our time. They tap into the consciousness of the past and translate it for the present moment. One such intuitive, dressed in a black bodysuit, touches the oracle disc in front of her, and she begins speaking, in a hushed tone, with eyes closed: “I touch upon 2011, fifty years past, and reflect this from that time. Incredible change and hardship faces this woman. Loss of job. Home flooded two years prior. Two children to support. She is applying for work via the global network. Now she is sitting still, in meditation. She opens her eyes and picks up a cellular phone. She speaks with her sister, saying this: ‘Sis, I know times are tough. Half of the homes on my block are in foreclosure. But I know things will work out. What I received in meditation is that the less we resist, the easier things will be. We need to be like the water in the stream and flow. Flow is the way forward. Yes, I know it’s a tough challenge for you. I know that few companies are hiring. But do not fear.

Be present. Look at what you need to do now, do it, and move forward. Do not dwell on what’s not working. Just flow like the wind in the trees. Be alert for opportunity. Breathe and relax into the flow. Spend time in stillness, and silence the mind. We were not given this opportunity without the ability to achieve our soul’s purpose.’  ” The oracle opens her eyes, turns and walks out of the room toward a different class down the hall. The teacher smiles to the class, arms outstretched, pleased that the oracle was able to share such wisdom. One student, bored, watches clouds float by overhead, moving over the translucent ceiling. Other students squirm in their chairs, whispering that they learned about meditation and the stillness when they were babies. The teacher senses the sentiment and reminds her students that knowing about meditation, about sitting in the silence, is one thing. Applying it to your life, when you face the most difficult of circumstances, is something else entirely. “It is only when we are truly tested that we grasp the wisdom of our souls,” she said. “May you have the courage to be still when your fears tell you to run.” a Tim Miejan is editor & co-publisher of Edge magazine. holistic living

The not-so-busy life emember the days when you went home from your job on Friday afternoon and didn’t think much about it until Monday morning? Remember when reading novels was a regular part of your life? Remember when the word “unplugged” was part of your vocabulary only when you were moving a lamp to another part of the room? Remember when a proposal or a check would slowly find its way to you through the mail while we patiently waited for its arrival? These days I feel like I’m ripping month pages off my calendar every week. It only took 12 weeks to go through 2010. But it isn’t even the warp speed of life, it’s also the corresponding speed with which we connect to others that is leaving us breathless. I just bought a droid phone, making my blackberry look like ancient history. By the time I figure out how to use all the features and apps, something new will be available to ramp up my connection speed. And, all over, I hear my clients, my students, and my friends say how life is busy, complicated and, well, a blur. Here’s a Feng Shui principle outlined in a simple mathematics formula:  Life = busy, complicated, a blur  Life = Space  Space = busy, complicated, a blur I’m not saying your home or office has caused this hectic pace, but I am saying it could contribute. It’s also possible your own hectic-ness is being reflected in the time and care with which you’re tending to your home/ office. In other words, your own frenetic pace is spilling over into your space. Either way, your home can help you find your way out of the frantic spin. By focusing in small ways on matters at home or work, you will start to see a new paradigm — one that is less busy, complicated and blurry. You begin by asking yourself:  How is my home/office busy? If you look around your space and it just feels busy, determine what makes it feel that way. Usually, this leads to the issue of clutter. Again, another simple math formula: more stuff = more busy-ness. Recommendation: Each day in a simple way, clear out one item. You can start in your office, your bedroom, your book shelf. Just start.  How is my home/office complicated? Your space is complicated if things don’t work right. If you have to struggle with a closet door each time you want to open it because the hinges need oiling, the knob is loose, the sliding doors have come off the track, etc., then that complicates how you relate to it. If each time you try to enter your space, the key needs to be coaxed and jiggled into opening, that complicates your entry experience. Or you have to be careful going up and down the stairs because the railing is broken. Recommendation: Each week fix a problem. These Back to Basics continued on page 10 

 Back to Basics from page 8 can be small, but annoying, factors that complicate your space, and your life.  How is my home/office blurry? Your space should provide you a clear vision of where you’re heading in life. You may be blurry with regard to the future when you have old pieces of furniture left over from a previous relationship, when the artwork on the walls was left by the prior owners, when you tolerate a rug (or chair or sofa or anything) that you once liked but now you detest. All of these situations can be holding you back from achieving clarity around your next step. Recommendation: Place one item or take one action in your space that reminds you of a goal you may be working toward. If you’re wanting more money, place an item in a prominent spot that feels rich and luxurious to you. Having real flowers on the dining room table may not cost much but it could make you feel like a million dollars. If a more successful career is what you’re after, painting your office a beautiful green color may not cost much but makes you feel like the executive you want to be.

Although any of these recommendations don’t require much time or even much money, the accumulated effort will be effective. Keep in mind your space is your life, your life is your space. Change your space, change your life. By eliminating the busy-ness, complications, and blurred vision in your space, you have a great opportunity to see that reflected in your life. a Carole J. The Awake n i n g To I nner Stillness by Lisa Sellman

y own journey, like so many others, was forged through a myriad of obstacles, the largest of which was dealing with a mental illness. I was diagnosed 20 years ago with Bipolar Disorder. I am not unique with a mental disorder, as current statistics by the National Institute of Mental Health state that in any given year, one in four adults are stricken. One in 17 adults suffers from serious mental illness. In addition, mental illness is the leading cause of disability in the United States and Canada, with many patients having more than one diagnosis. Ninety percent of suicides are committed by someone with a mental disorder. You may ask, “What is missing in our current society that would account for such staggering numbers?” Coming from a place of darkness and now seeing the light, I can attest to what I believe and what has saved me. When one is in the grips of a mental disorder, the most common feeling is fear. Fear that no one understands me. Fear that no one else in the world feels the way I feel. Fear that I will always feel this way. All of these fears amount to one word — isolation. The prison system enforces one of the most hated punishments, solitary confinement. Movies and books have been written about prisoners suffering day after day in a dark cell, slowly going mad. I readily identified with this visualization of being separate and trapped, and I thought longingly about the day my life would end and the suffering would be over. I climbed the rope of unworthiness, hand over hand through darkness, until one day a light appeared. That light has just continued to get brighter and brighter. I no longer feel isolated. I feel in harmony and I am aware of our inner relatedness that we are each part of the whole. We never know what will transform our lives. My journey to light and choice to live came to me very quickly one day while I was on a cruise ship with 3,000 other people. While the experience was

isolating to say the least, a morning stress seminar gave me my first experience with a guided meditation — and probably my first instance getting a glimpse of my true spirit. The guided meditation led me through a path to a door that had a dozen steps that led me to a garden. With each step, I allowed myself to go deeper into a relaxed state. As I stepped off the last step, with my eyes closed, a sphere of intense purple light revealed itself to me. As the color grew more deeply, I felt my breath move in tandem with the vibrations of color. Any fear that was in my body left at that moment. I could only feel love and gratitude for being a part of this world and knew to my core that this is what life is — energy and pure potential. From that moment, I have continued to get to know my unique energy and learn how this energy can move through me to the highest good. There are so many energy healers just waiting to guide us and I am grateful for all of them, because they raise the Earth’s vibration. The greatest joy in life, I have found, is getting to know myself and connect with my soul’s energy. Through quiet stillness, I ground myself and clear my energy system of things that I don’t want. Fears or regrets are removed and all I feel is pure potential with what this physical body can do on this Earth. I now have come to understand that the purple is my 7th Chakra, my soul energy, coming through. Each of us will find this energy manifest in our own unique way. But to find it, you must first find the courage to start on the journey and become aware of the inner stillness that is here waiting to come forth. a Lisa Sellman finds the lessons in life are best learned from our animal companions. Beginning with a pet care business in 2004, she has continued to acquire knowledge and now teaches people how to train their own dogs through peaceful respect and intuition. She also takes individual consultations in gentle dog training and Tellington TTouch and continues to operate a pet care business. Contact her at 763.503.4797, or visit www. Copyright © 2011. Echo Bodine, brother Michael appearing together at Psychic Symposium by Insiah Beckman

oted Twin Cities psychic, healer and author Echo Bodine, and her brother Michael, a celebrity psychic and author, will present a lecture together for the first time at the Twin Cities Psychic Symposium, from 2:30-4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, at the Earle Brown Heritage Center in Brooklyn Park. The event, an opportunity for the public to learn more about intuition and psychic phenomena, also includes keynote speaker Mas Sajady ($10 advance, $15 at door, 9:15 a.m. on “Design Your Life for 2011”) and a psychic panel from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. featuring Troy Parkinson (medium), Kayla Wright (psychic) and Cathy Lindsey (Astroeyes Evolutionary Astrology) and myself, a channel. Exhibitors will feature intuitive readers, animal communicators, aura phototographers, healers and metaphsyical consultations and merchandise. The Twin Cities Psychic Symposium is from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Parking is free. Admission is $7 in advance ( or 1.877.776.5255) or $9 at the door, discounts for groups of two or more. Speaker tickets include admission to the event. From all indications, it will be an exciting and profound experience. My husband, Gary, and I met Echo and Michael for lunch and it was fascinating to watch them as a team, playing off one another. There is a great deal of love between the two. They say they are excited to be sharing the stage for the first time and have been working on a very special presentation to entertain the audience and, of course, offer insights and answers to some of life’s challenges. “It’s time to recognize your spiritual gifts,” Echo says. As Echo looks at 2011, one word comes to mind: “Intense.” She says we already are living in intense times, noting that the universe is going to turn the heat up a notch so that we begin living by our spiritual gifts, psychic abilities and inner voice or intuition. In this 90-minute lecture, Echo and Michael define what these gifts are and how you can recognize them in yourself. They will share how they developed their abilities and will expand on how these special gifts can assist you in your daily life. They also will offer guidance on developing your own abilities. VIP seating is $29 advance, $37 at the door (includes free meditation CD), or general admission $20 advance, $29 at the door. Echo emphasizes that if you have been told that psychic or intuitive gifts are bad, evil or satanic, you are misinformed. You have a right to recognize, develop and live by guidance. She says those who are spiritually awake are open to receive daily guidance, and life does not have to be a struggle. Echo currently is focusing on her online psychic development classes, and Michael’s focus is on his Los Angeles-based celebrity clientele. They both reside in the Twin Cities. Wisdom Beyond the Veil by Lenni Garin

eyond the veil that separates the earth from the heavens exists a hierarchy of Divine Beings who are waiting. They know there are human beings who will one day realize they are more than a body plodding through life because of some cosmic accident. They know these souls will awaken to a memory that something Divine exists within them, something that connects them to an unknown powerful source of wisdom. We are those souls and they are the wisdom beyond the veil that is waiting to guide us. This earth is a school of learning. We chose to enroll in this school, even though we knew it would be difficult. We had a choice to go to other schools that were easier and less demanding, but we wanted to go to the best school, a school we could liken to Harvard, a school with challenging courses and tests that would seem almost insurmountable. We knew if we showed up for classes, did our homework and passed the tests, regardless of how difficult, we would one day graduate. Getting a degree from this Harvard was an incredibly important accomplishment. It wasn’t just graduating from any school and it wasn’t just any degree. It was the most demanding school and guaranteed we would leave with a Master’s degree. Before we enrolled, we met with our personal “spiritual advisors” to decide what courses we were going to take for our soul’s highest growth. We chose classes in relationships, career, money, ego, fear, addictions and many other difficult courses. We knew some of these courses were going to be extremely grueling, but we also knew we would not struggle alone. Our advisors made a promise to us. They would be there to guide us. They assured us that we were entering the school of life with a direct line to the divine wisdom that would help us pass the tests we needed to earn our Master’s degree. They told us that we had one incredible advisor that would be with us constantly. They explained that our advisor is capable of interpreting the wisdom beyond the veil because it lives there, and here. This advisor is our soul.

Our life is not pre-determined, but it is pre-designed. We knew exactly what we wanted to accomplish when we incarnated. Our Soul had an agenda, pre-designed with the help of an incredibly wise team of brilliant beings who are constantly accessible. We made a commitment to enter into this earth life experience in order to grow, overcome past challenges, missed opportunities and failed tests. Some of us committed to more than our own personal soul’s growth. We committed to accepting the role of mentor for other souls who also enrolled in the school of life. Our reason for incarnating then transcended our own personal growth and included our commitment to helping other souls evolve. Our journey in the school of life is not just about us. We can only earn a Master’s degree if we share what we have learned with other souls who are struggling with their own tests. The Master’s degree is the completion of all of the tests our soul, and our advisors, helped us create before we were born. Once we pass the tests, which are to transform our earthly challenges into enlightened insight that we can share with others, we are finished. We will never need to enroll in Harvard again and our cycle of rebirth onto this planet will also be finished. Earning a Master’s degree is only possible if we overcome the power of our human ego by aligning with the wisdom of the soul. The voice of our soul is continuously calling for us to listen. If we will stop our addiction to earthly distractions, it will guide us to everything we need to manifest our dreams. It will align us with the magnificent wisdom of those who live beyond the veil. Our spiritual evolution isn’t in the hands of a guru du jour whom we think has the answer. It is in the very center of our own being — and it is calling for us to learn to channel the wisdom and power of the beyond. a Lenni Garin is the minister at Key to Life Center and founder of “Keyology.” She also is the author of “Soul of an Addict” and “The 7 Spiritual Steps to Sobriety.” Key to Life Center’s Sunday services are at 10:30 a.m. in Plymouth, MN. “Soul of an Addict” support meetings are at 6:30 p.m. every Tuesday. The gift of a dead body by Eric J. Christopher

ooking back, I never thought that a brief encounter with a dying man in India would have shaped the foundation of my career, and lay the groundwork for my spiritual journey. After 20 years, I now see how everything fell into place. “Why don’t you sit with that man over there — he’s dying.” I heard these welcoming words from a man who motioned me to a cot at Mother Theresa’s Home for the Destitute and Dying in Calcutta (now Kolkata). While

backpacking in India as an impressionable 24 year old, I decided to volunteer at the shelter. I’d never seen a dying person, and wasn’t sure what to do, so I simply did as I was told. In a stark, cement-floored room filled with 40 other people lying on their cots, I sat on a wooden stool next to a gaunt man. His eyes opened wide as he gazed into mine. He began speaking to me in Bengali. I tried to explain that I didn’t understand, but he continued talking. Then he reached for my hand and instinctively, I placed his hand in mine. His other arm grabbed my arm and

My addiction-loving solitude began with my two-year experience as a Peace Corps volunteer in Zaire, Central Africa. Listening to the heat lift off the rain forest trees in total solitude, (away from all I knew and thought I knew), helped me to reflect both on my core strengths and my shadow side. Now at age 60, my solitary time is a treasure and one that helps me dream the world I want into being and make sure that I live out the value-led existence I desire. Since my days as a Peace Corps volunteer, I have found solitary time through meditation, walks in the woods, long drives and vision quest experiences. This time has led me to live out my dreams to become a teacher on the Indian reservation nearby and the owner on a lakeside healing center in NW Wisconsin. I seek out opportunities to reflect on both the action and inactions that I have taken with my loved ones and the world. Seeking to become the person I want to be requires solitary time. In short, my solitude is my catalyst to leading a value-driven life. a — Maxine Mashek, The Lakehouse B&B Stone Lake, WI

I clutched it. Then he died. The heat and animating force left and his body grew cold and rigid, eyes vacant. He was gone. Where did his energy go? Einstein’s Theory of Conservation flashed through my brain: Energy can never be destroyed, only transformed. For example, if you burn a piece of paper, it changes into carbon and gas. Who or what is he now? Where is his energy? Where did he go? These questions raced through my mind as we carried his lifeless form down a narrow street interrupting a group of children playing soccer. Quietly, the children stopped and inspected his feet, hands and hair poking out from beneath the sheet as we made our way past them. Then they quickly resumed their game as we brought his body to the wood pyre to burn. This is not how children would react to seeing a dead body in America. Not only is death more visible in India, and thereThe Gift continued on page 23  february 2011  edge magazine

Murphy’s Law No More How Spirituality has transformed one woman’s life, and how it can change yours too An interview with Twin Cities psychic Deborah Lynn 11 on her new book by Tim Miejan

t was summer, a couple of years ago, when I first heard her story. I listened for hours to the heartbreak and the sadness, of a drug-using, alcoholic father who taught his own children to steal from department stores. The mother whose strictness drove her daughter to tune out in front of the television set, mindlessly eating to feel good about herself. And then, many hours later, I learned about the transformational joy and bliss that has risen like a phoenix out of a highly dysfunctional childhood. Twin Cities psychic Deborah Lynn11, once an aimless pawn pushed back and forth between two parents who were ill-equipped to parent at all, is now sharing her very personal story of how her devotion to spirituality has helped her to overcome all of that — and much more — in her book Murphy’s Law No More, which will debut at the Twin Cities Psychic Symposium on Feb. 26 at Earle Brown Heritage Center in Brooklyn Center, MN. “My story is a journey from dysfunction to wellness,” the preface to her book reads. “What I will share with you is one woman’s story, but it also is yours. No matter how hard the challenges in your life seem to be, you can overcome them. And in doing so, you will be a much stronger person.” I spoke with Deborah Lynn11 about her personal transformation. Deborah, your early story is one of great family dysfunction. Can you give our readers a taste of what life was like for you as a young girl? Deborah Lynn11: I was in a world of

two different places. My father taught me to be streetwise and do every-

the past. I moved to Minnesota and totally removed myself from all the dysfunction, the unhealthy habits that I had acquired since I was a child. By losing all of my family, I was forced to look at myself. I lost my Dad in 1987 and my Mom and husband in 1993, and then my older sister in 1998. I had no one else to turn to but myself. When you have nobody else in your life, you’re forced to look at yourself. And I realized, “Oh my God, what have I done?” You learn a lot about selfawareness when you are in solitude. Are tendencies from the past still within you, and if so, what is the secret to not going back and reliving old patterns? DL: Yes, I do have habits from the

thing I was not supposed to do, and my mom was the opposite. It was a world where I had what I thought was a fun Dad. He was the one I felt I should cozy up to, because he let me do whatever I wanted. In my eyes, Dad was the one who really loved me. He let me play and do the things that he thought were fun. I thought of my mother as a Hitler, a dictator, and someone who I felt hated me because she was so strict. I was never allowed to go and do anything with my friends. I could never go to movies and do things with the other kids. It was all work, work, work — torture. What was the result of this young girl who had one parent with very strict guidelines and the other parent with no guidelines? What kind of young adult did it create? DL: It caused me to run away at a

young age, because I was torn. Oh my God, what am I doing here? What do I do? I felt like I had to get away from the situation, because I was going crazy. It caused me to have really dysfunctional habits.

What was the turning point in your personal transformation? DL: I was realizing that my bad

habits were hurting me and my daughter.

Ultimately, how were you able to extract yourself from the energy of the past and move forward in a new direction? DL: I totally removed myself from

past that still plague me. One is food, because food represents my fun, the way that I love myself. The way I avoid those habits is to get out of myself and realize that thinking is dangerous. If you sit around and think about the things you need to do, they won’t get done. Just do what needs to be done. It is important for me to motivate myself to get up and do things.

What role did your intuitive gifts play in finding a new direction? DL: I’ve always been intrigued by

the metaphysical world and what it entailed and how it worked. How did people become psychic? I’ve always had a craving to learn that. The key is to follow your passion, and that’s what I did. Following my passion was instrumental in helping me move forward, away from the dysfunction I had grown up with. I learned that nothing is by mistake. When I focused on the spiritual world, I realized that everything that I was handed was in perfect order. We come here to planet Earth to learn lessons. Life is about choices. I realized I could choose to live in a world of fear and negativity, or I could choose to live in a world of love and protection. To be in the world and not of it. That involves raising your level of consciousness and realizing that there is love and protection around us at all times, even though we cannot see it. You are never alone.

Holistic Healthy Healing

Who is the intended audience for your book? DL: This book is for women from the ages of mid-20s on

up, especially those who feel persecuted and damned because of what has happened to them in their lives.

Discover the benefits of your own healing capabilities. Free yourself of those negative habits, find your true life path, increase your selfconfidence, heal your body, mind, emotions, spirit, and create your own Happiness!

What do you hope to leave your readers with when they finish your book? DL: I want to leave them feeling

inspired and uplifted. I want to help them realize that we’re on this planet to learn lessons and that we can choose to live in the spiritual realm while here in these bodies. I want them to know that life is a miracle and that it is important to face your fears.

What was the gift for you in going back into the past so you could share it with us? DL: I learned how much I have really grown and trans-

formed spiritually. It has been a total metamorphosis.

Would you suggest that our readers do the same, go back and explore the gifts they received in their upbringing? DL: Yes. It is not an easy process, however. Make sure

you have a confidante, someone with whom you can express your fears and pain. Someone who will listen and give you the nurturing that you need. Compassion. It may not be a parent or a sibling, but a friend who loves and supports you.

At the beginning of our talk, you shared what life was like for you as a young girl. Please give us a sense of what it is like for you now. DL: I’m living life here on Earth, as it is in my heaven,

in total peace and tranquility. I’m comfortable with my space. I’m responsible, having removed all of my unhealthy habits — except for the food. I have a beautiful home of my home in Stillwater. I was fated to be here.

What do you say to the woman who is impressed with what you’ve done in your life, but she doesn’t see any way out of her situation? DL: If you keep saying you won’t, then you won’t. Have

Balancing Your Brain how real-ti m e data can reb oot your brain & i m prove your life

Part 1 of an interview on brain fitness with Paulette Hastings by Tim Miejan

Please read Part 2 online at he idea was intriguing — balancing your brain to the way it was intended to operate. I envisioned a bank of computers where clients rearranged rectangular blocks on the screen or memorized lists from quickly flashing images or tried to remember where letters were hidden out of sight. I thought it was about exercising the brain to make it work better — but I was wrong. After noted Twin Cities psychic Echo Bodine told me about how Brainwave Optimization had helped her achieve an incredibly invigorating sense of balance again following a mild stroke she had suffered a few years ago, I visited the Neuro Strength offices in Bloomington. What I learned was that a technology has been developed during the past 10 years that not only identifies brainwave imbalances in your brain, but restores optimum brain function through the power of sound. Paulette Hastings, owner of Neuro Strength, calls it “brain training.” It is based on technology developed by Brain State Technologies in Scottsdale, AZ. The software measures the optimal brainwave levels produced in each lobe of your brain, translates those levels into soundwaves, and then it transfers that optimal soundscape — in real time, as your brain is creating the patterns — back to the brain via headphones with the certainty that your brain will make the optimal pattern it is hearing the dominant pattern in what it is creating. Through hours of repeated sessions in less than two weeks, the intention is that this optimal brainwave level will become how your brain will now operate. With more than 140 offices internationally, Brain State Technologies

“Our goal here is to promote balance and harmony in the brain. We’re not here to heal or treat or diagnose anyone. We look at the energy that   the brain produces. The foundational theory we use is based in quantum physics: Once something can be observed, it changes. ” Paulette Hastings has amassed a database of more than 30,000 brainwave assessments — considered the largest database of brainwave readings in the world — and it continually studies how to further refine and perfect its technology to help more people achieve greater harmony in their lives. I recently spoke with Mrs. Hastings

come in many different forms. It’s often physical things: “I can’t sleep well” or “I’m feeling too much physical pain.” It also can be emotional: “Whenever I come up to a certain situation, I immediately freeze up and I can’t move beyond that place.” People come to Neuro Strength for a number of reasons. The largest number of people come to us because they’re depressed and they’re unhappy with what they’re experiencing at this time. Sleep difficulties also are a big reason people come to us for help. And more and more we’re seeing people come for help with addiction, whether it’s a behavior addiction like gambling or a substance addiction. Sugar also is a big addiction for many people. We know the brain can become imbalanced when it experiences a trauma, whether it is a real trauma or a perceived one. People don’t consider a bump on the head, if it’s not a significant bump, to be an issue, but we know, in fact, that it can have a big difference on how effectively the

brain works. Even if you stand up and bump your head on the cupboard. It seems like a minor thing, but it definitely has an effect on the brain. So it can be physical bumps like that, or car accidents, but it also can be perceived traumas. You felt that you were threatened in some way — or perhaps you are being threatened by somebody or some thing. Those kinds of traumas can cause certain patterns to form in your brain. They are important patterns, because they help you survive whatever the incident is, but they don’t necessarily need to stay there forever, once you are out of that situation. That’s when the imbalance can come into play.

At first glance, it would seem like you only help people who have had actual injuries to the brain, but you are looking at the total effectiveness of our brains in our everyday lives. PH: Absolutely. We do help people who have had specific

head injuries, but the vast majority of those who come here have not had those types of injuries.

Can you compare what you do with brain function to the process of defragmenting computers that become clogged down with old, outdated information and data that is no longer needed? PH: That’s an interesting way to put it. I haven’t actually

thought of it that way. Yes, when those patterns that develop as a result of some kind of trauma and an imbalance forms, those patterns continue to stay dominant until they are told they no longer need to remain dominant any more. An example of how those patterns can be changed can be seen in an example of somebody who has had a stroke. We know that if they are having difficulty walking, physical therapy or occupational therapy can help them to override those patterns that are in the brain. Our brains have an amazing memory, and we don’t actually ever lose any patterns that develop. What’s important are the patterns that are dominant and which ones are not, as far as how we respond to things. So it’s not a question of getting rid of old data that our brains no longer need, but making those old patterns less accessible.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO STAY STUCK IN THE SAME OLD PATTERNS… Those old habits, old beliefs about yourself and the world, and old traumas don’t have to stand in your way forever!

YOU CAN MAKE REAL CHANGES IN YOUR LIFE… Claiming your truth and living your passion. Releasing your old limited self-concept and stepping out into the world. Getting back on your feet after a setback or major life change. Starting a new business, career or life. Or whatever else you want! With the help of energy psychology and energy medicine, you’ll find it’s much easier than you imagined.

During a stroke, there is a loss of blood to an area of the brain. What is happening during brain training in terms of re-accessing those areas of the brain that have been temporarily lost? PH: What we allow the brain to do is to see itself through

sound. What we do is place sensors on the scalp to measure the brainwaves in specific lobes of the brain. And when we replay a person’s brainwaves as soundwaves to them, we’re really replaying just the optimal ones that they’re creating. So we’re not sending them the tones that are very out of balance. It’s likely that at that location, wherever that stroke took place, what’s happening on the left side of the brain is very different than what’s happening on the right side of the brain, because of the injury that took place. When we create an opportunity for them to hear, or observe, themselves, the brain chooses to create more of that positive, optimal pattern. For an individual, they may not always regain fully what they had, because there may be too much injury in that location, but the brain may, in fact, make alternative Brain continued on page 18 

A Personal Experience by Echo Bodine

y journey with Brain State Technologies began in October 2010 when I read an article in People magazine about Wynonna Judd’s 55-pound weight loss. It wasn’t the typical article promoting a diet or weight loss program. It was an article about things I could relate to, like out-of-control eating due to low self-esteem, fear, anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, etc. She talked about food being her comforter throughout her life and that when she did the training at Brain State Technologies for the first time ever, she felt grounded and safe and no longer has the need for food like she always has. “Grounded” and “safe” popped out at me like a neon sign. For the next couple of days, I couldn’t stop thinking about what it would feel like to actually feel truly grounded and safe. I’ve worked on all of the same issues she mentions in the article. I’m no stranger to therapy and twelve-step groups, and have done a lot of healing through alternative health care, as well. But her words grounded and safe rang in my soul like a loud dinner bell and I knew she was on the right track. My inner voice gave me a huge nudge to call and make an appointment, which I did. I went in for an introductory visit and knew intuitively that I needed to sign up for the ten sessions they recommend. I have completed those sessions and blogged about the entire journey on my website [] if you’d like to get a more in-depth report on it. I can sum it all up by saying this technology has changed me in the most positive way. I now know what it feels like to

really feel grounded and safe. I have a calmness inside that’s hard to put into words. I feel this tremendous amount of love that I sometimes have to harness, because it could be confusing for people. December is usually a pretty tough time for me emotionally. I’ve been labeled bipolar and I never know if I’m going to be in the manic state or the very depressed state. I can honestly say as I sail through this December, I’m as balanced as a person can be. No manic. No depression. Just nice and even. And it’s not the kind of nice and even you get with meds. It’s a deeper nice and even. I feel excited about the future — more hopeful in spite of the state of the economy, the country and the world in general. I’m enjoying work much more. My psychic gifts have gotten stronger and the healing coming out of my hands is stronger, because I feel more trusting and open. Writing is more enjoyable because my focus and clarity have improved a great deal since having a stroke a few years ago. Something else I love about this program is that the work done on your brain is permanent, so you don’t have to keep going back, but if you feel you want to do more work (like I will with clarity and focus) you can go back for more sessions. I want to experience my full potential — and I feel like, for the first time ever, I’ll finally be able to do that. a   Echo Bodine has offered psychic readings, healings and teaching spiritual classes for 42 years.  Brain continued from page 17 routes. We may never see the perfect balance on the computer screen, because their brain has moved to a different area, essentially, to do a work-around. What you were describing was the Brainwave Optimization process. Please go back a bit and describe what exactly you do for people. PH: Our goal here is to

promote balance and harmony in the brain. We’re not here to heal or treat or diagnose anyone. We look at the energy that the brain produces. The foundational theory we use is based in quantum physics: Once something can be observed, it changes. In the same way, we look in a mirror and see that our collar needs to be adjusted. We make that observation and we adjust our collar. That’s the same theory as what happens in the brain. We use an equivalent of EEG equipment, so we use electrodes and we call them sensors. With those sensors, we record the brainwave activity that’s happening in a moment of time. We take only the optimal brainwaves and translate those into soundwaves. We feed those back to a person as tones heard through earphones. It happens in less than a second of turnaround, so in real time the brain can observe that. There appears to be a recognition by the brain of where these sounds are being

produced, and it wants to create more of those optimal sounds. The brain has a sense, or a wisdom, that those are positive for it. We don’t force the brain to do anything. We simply allow it to observe itself. And the brain chooses to make whatever changes it’s going to make.

has a high percentage of water, so that is important. Protein, or amino acids, are a good thing for your brain. Also make sure you include Omega 3 in your diet, either as a supplement or through food naturally (kale, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, the oily fish like salmon and mackerel).

None of us is given an operator’s manual for peak efficiency of our body and how to use it. Are there any natural ways in which the brain achieves this optimal level without the need for intervention? PH: The best way to do that is through

What role does sleep play in the fitness of the brain? PH: It’s a huge factor. Poor sleep impacts

meditation and taking time to be quiet. Unfortunately in our society, we don’t always take that time and do it every day and be faithful about it. A sense of stillness and quiet reflection can do the same thing. It will take much longer with meditation — and I don’t say that as a negative in any way. We know that master meditators who have been doing this for 40 or 50 years can achieve a great sense of calm and balance. One of the early things that Lee Gerdes, who developed this technology, did was look at the brains of two Tibetan monks. He felt, “That’s probably what a content brain looks like.” We have had more than 30,000 people use the technology, and he continues to look at brain patterning.

What does everyone need to know about their brains, but do not? PH: That you have to take really good care

of your brain. That’s something we really don’t think about. There are obvious things like wearing a helmet when playing sports and wearing a seatbelt in the car, just to be protective physically of your head. There also are some simple things, nutritionally, that you can do to help. One is to keep yourself really well hydrated. Your brain

every aspect of our life. When we don’t get enough sleep, sometimes we start to produce the stress hormone, cortisol, in the brain. That puts an additional stressor on the brain, as well as the body, in terms of being able to focus well. When you have higher levels of cortisol, it becomes a circle: you become stressed more quickly and, as opposed to the calm of meditation, you stay in more of a stressed environment in your brain.

What daily practices can our readers do to improve the fitness of their brains? PH: We’ve talked about good nutrition.

People may not want to hear it, but avoiding alcohol is a really good thing to do. Exercise is important, to continue to deliver good oxygen to the brain. Meditation and enough sleep also are important to mention. a Part 2 of this interview, offering more information on the Neuro Strength sessions, is featured at

A gluten-free, dairy-free, whole food recipe

Quinoa with Black Beans by Maggie Christopher This is a favorite recipe of my clients. It is so flavorful and satisfying that you’ll forget you’re eating something so good for you! Keep in mind that using organic ingredients will only enhance your flavor and increase the amount of vitamins and minerals in the dish.

Ingredients: 1 tsp organic, unrefined olive oil 1 onion, chopped 3 cloves of garlic, peeled & chopped 3/4 cup uncooked quinoa 1½ cups vegetable broth 1 tsp cumin ¼ tsp cayenne pepper (less if you don’t like spicy dishes) Salt and Pepper to taste 1 cup frozen corn 2 (15oz) cans of black beans, drained & rinsed ½ cup chopped fresh cilantro Heat the oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the onion and garlic, and sauté until lightly browned. Mix quinoa into the saucepan and add vegetable broth. Season with cumin, cayenne pepper, salt and pepper. Bring the mixture to a boil. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer 20 minutes. Quinoa should be soft and fluffy when done. Stir frozen corn into the saucepan, and continue to simmer about 5 minutes until heated through. Mix in the black beans and cilantro. Makes 8 small servings. a Maggie Christopher, CHNC, is a certified holistic nutrition counselor in St. Paul. Creating a Conscious Kitchen to support optimal health by Gina Citoli

Second in a four-part series he kitchen was once the center of life. With our fast-paced lifestyles, we have gradually moved away from customs of food preparation and feelings of connection and community surrounding preparing and sharing a meal. This has affected our physical health and that of our planet. To create conscious healthy eating habits and a conscious kitchen, it is important to have it well stocked with essential items. Otherwise, we easily revert to the unconscious, impulsive and lesshealthy choices. What is a Conscious Kitchen? My definition is that it’s a place that is attuned with the balance of nature and the needs of our body, mind and spirit. It is a place where we create meals with a new level of awareness of what

and how we are consuming. The first awareness of our conscious kitchen is to realize a clean home and the use of chemical cleaners is not harmonious with our health and that of the environment. The effects of chemicals in the world have become an epidemic. The typical U.S. family accrues up to 100 pounds of harmful household waste per year, which includes cleaning products. The EPA suggests the air in our homes can be two to five times more toxic than the outside. Let’s begin our adventure of creating a conscious kitchen by replacing our hazardous items with those that are more earth friendly. Replace your dish soap with an earth-friendly brand made with safer and biodegradable ingredients. Try original Bon Ami that has no chemicals. It scrubs well! The old standby, baking soda and vinegar, is very effective. One of my favorites is the Young Living

Thieves household cleaner, which smells divine, cleans well, is anti-bacterial and is made from essential oils. There also are many safe oven and drain cleaners. The next awareness in your conscious kitchen is to make healthy choices and know where your food originated. Buy organic and local as much as possible! Now, let’s stock the pantry. Start collecting good-sized glass jars and containers. Then take a trip to your local co-op’s bulk section. Here you will find a wealth of healthy foods to fill your containers. You can find bulk beans and pastas, oatmeal and hot cereals, rice, organic flours and much more. Also stock up on 100 percent maple syrup, virgin olive oil, and healthy snacks. If you are gluten free, look for the Tinkyada brand. The pasta is firm and holds up well. For me, one of the most important parts of my kitchen is herbs and spices. I keep dried spices, as well as fresh plants, in the house for the winter, as there is nothing like fresh herbs! My top suggestions to stock would be garlic granules, fresh cloves, a seasoning called Spike, cayenne pepper (which is both great to cook with and has many healing properties), dill, oregano and a curry powder. Keep in mind that spices keep their best for six months, then they start losing flavor and health properties. The advantage of buying herbs from a co-op is the ability to purchase them fresh in bulk at the amount you want, which makes the food less expensive in the long run. For your refrigerator and freezer, there are countless healthy condiments, jellies

and nut butters, frozen fruits, berries, whole grain breads and healthy entrees. If you eat meat, be sure to choose hormone and antibiotic free and preferably 100 percent grass fed. And keep a good supply of fresh fruits and vegetables on hand. Finally, you will need the proper appliances and tools to cook your food with. Stainless steel pots and pans and iron skillets are your healthiest choices. Good rubber spatulas, a garlic press, a blender, juicer, food processor and a quality set of knives are also essential. If you eat raw foods, a good food dehydrator with temperature control is a must and a handheld mixer and eggbeater are great to have, as well. As you consciously choose to stock and prepare your kitchen for optimal health, you are more likely to make conscious choices. Create a conscious kitchen and return to the mindful connections that meal times once provided. a

 The Gift continued from page 13

India’s enlightened sages, would instruct his students to ask this self-inquiry as a means of stopping incessant mind chatter while awakening to, and resting back into their ultimate nature of presence/awareness. The mind is unable to grasp what our highest identity is, so the question results in a quiet, blank mind without an answer. This silence offers a momentary glimpse of our deepest self, beyond the mind’s ability to label and comprehend — pure awareness forever anchored in the here and now. I cannot say whether or not my dying stranger/friend considered my presence a gift in the last several minutes of his life, however he gave me an immeasurable gift that has been the guiding force of not only my career, but my life. a

fore viewed differently, but life there is also experienced quite radically from the Western perspective. Most Indians have a distinct concept about who they are. They are a soul that uses a body, rather than a body that has a soul. The difference in identity is significant. One identity doesn’t die, the other one does. Primarily identifying as a soul promotes an expanded view of oneself and life. What’s animating this body? Who are we? Why are we here? Long after my return home, my experience in Calcutta churned these questions in my mind for years. Eventually, I stumbled upon my first book on past life regression: Michael Newton’s Journey of Souls. My body pulsed with excitement, and I knew that this was the work that I wanted to do…something that glimpsed and shed light on our larger identity and purpose. Years later, I learned that the question “Who or what am I?” had an even deeper purpose. Ramana Maharshi, one of

A clinician’s perspective

In times of transition by Dr. Patricia Lawler

t was a late afternoon in 2005. I sat at the office completing my presentation for a workshop I would offer the following week. I felt pleased and experienced the type of satisfaction that arrives when you know you have done a job well. Several key concepts had fallen into place, deepening my own understanding of the information. I mused, “One actually does learn when preparing for a presentation!” The subject of the presentation was of a spiritual nature, part of the Peace & Healing Series I had been developing. My heart was full with the sense I was more frequently experiencing a universal state of gratitude and joy, and wondered what a different world this might be if we all consistently lived in this state. With thankfulness I saved my documents, shut down the computer, and prepared to leave the office. It was my intent to drive home and head out for a walk in the woods. The weather was unusually warm and balmy, and I looked forward to feeling the sun on my skin. Somehow, however, while walking along the second floor hallway, trotting down the back hallway steps and then opening the building door to the parking lot, my level of consciousness changed forever. I would never experience the world in the same way.

Symptoms of Consciousness Shift

What I experienced that day remains in my mind as clearly as the day it happened. My reflexes and depth perception abruptly changed. My senses exploded to perceive a new world. I suddenly was in a profound meditative state. Yet, my eyes were open and my body was moving through space. The ego experienced these symptoms with fear. I was emotionally paralyzed. Gradually over several weeks, I learned to adapt and to let go of the ego’s response of fear to the change. To this day the experience continues and expands. In A Course in Miracles, it is written about this state of being, “I am

holistic living

at home. Fear is the stranger here,” a contemplation that kept me sane during the transition. Although my sudden powerful shift was dramatic with profound physical and emotional manifestations, thankfully, not all of us experience such a sudden change. We evolve more gradually. Yet, even when not profound, a mild but sudden shift can occur, leading us to experience fatigue, challenges in ability to concentrate and motivate and, for some, dizziness with mild nausea. These shifts can reoccur on one’s journey. The symptoms are usually manageable, although with responsibilities of career or those associated with raising young children, they can be challenging. Fortunately we are also rewarded with more profound moments of Love, Gratitude and Peace.

The Quickening

Over the past three years the universal rate of deepening of consciousness has appeared to speed up or quicken. This has increased the magnitude of challenging mental/ emotional and physical responses, especially if there is ego resistance. Some of these can be severe. As a clinician, I have experienced profound blockages in individuals requiring clinical support. These blockages can lead to endocrine dysfunctions, neurological pain and other uncomfortable manifestations.

Maintaining Our Balance — 9 Habits

Here are 9 habits that we can practice that I have found helpful for maintaining energetic balance in the midst of this spiritual quickening:  Practice Love and Gratitude.

Consider on-the-hour contemplations said silently in the mind. Follow Rhonda Byrne’s recommendation in her book, The Power, to achieve a “tipping” point of love, at least 51 percent of the time.

 Practice daily meditation/prayer. Meditative movement — such as Qigong, Tai Chi, Yoga, The 5 Rites or other — can help us maintain

physical, mental and emotional balance, as well.  Allow yourself a more relaxed schedule and get more sleep during times of rapid shift. Let the ego’s fear dissipate in the knowledge that you are going through a beautiful but profound transition from Homo Sapiens to Homo Spiritus and that you will arrive at a new, comfortable level.  Learn a self-assessment tool like Muscle Response Testing. These tools can help you understand what factors are causing uncomfortable symptoms.  Honor the body by learning to breathe deeply; eat a balanced, low sugar, whole food diet and drink pure water.  Gently exercise daily if you are able.  Know and practice being your authentic self. Not being authentic results from reactive emotional patterns and can lead to illness.  Identify your current level of

consciousness relative to your potential level of consciousness. Knowing your journey decreases ego anxiety.

 Seek support from a practitioner experienced in both spiritual development and functional medicine if you are experiencing uncomfortable symptoms or are feeling anxiety. Your condition can be accurately assessed, supported and corrected in a loving environment through natural therapies, supplements, therapeutic essential oils and consciousness consultation. a Dr. Patricia Lawler is the founder and Clinical Director of HOLLY HOUSE, Center for Integrated HealthCare. Mississippi Market commits to local growers by Liz McMann

n this age of global food production, it’s easy to get nearly any food, during any season, in any part of this country. Strawberries in February, kumquats in March and bananas every day are the norm now — but this wasn’t always the case. It wasn’t so long ago that an orange was a luxury and sugar was cherished. This modern expansion of our food supply certainly has its benefits. Many of us wouldn’t know what to do without our daily coffee or chocolate. But with these benefits come responsibilities, to keep our local farmers, farm communities and the environment thriving. When Mississippi Market Co-op started doing business, this was in the forefront of the minds of a small group of people who wanted good, clean food from local sources. And now, 31 years later, this St. Paul cooperative is 10,000 member-owners strong and part of a thriving local foods community in the Midwest. Of course, we’re not the only ones. Plenty of people have opened their eyes to the benefits of eating locally these days and they’ve all had that moment of realization — eating locally doesn’t have to be restrictive and it can strengthen both the environment and the communities that surround us. It’s nearly impossible to ignore the benefits. When farmers intend to sell their produce to local markets like ours, they are able to grow varieties that are known for their juiciness, flavor and nutrition rather than for their ability to ship well or ripen while packed in a box. Along with local foods’ shorter transportation times (the average for non-local foods is 7-14 days) comes a reduced dependence on fossil fuels for transporting across those “food miles.” Plus, the economic benefits of supporting local farms ripple throughout a community, enriching all those involved. If local farms are small to medium in size and using organic or sustainable methods, they hit the ideal trifecta that Mississippi Market is looking for in a product. Many people assume that eating locally means virtually starving in the winter in such a cold climate. But everyday staple foods like oatmeal, cornmeal, beans, wild rice, milk, cheese, bread, eggs and meat from local farmers are

all available every day of the year at Mississippi Market. While the fresh produce selection does dwindle after the snowfall, our savvy local farmers have begun using hoop houses, root cellars and hydroponics to extend the season far beyond past limits. So how do we find all this amazing food that is grown locally? Many of our farmers have been supplying the co-op for decades. New farmers and producers now seek us out, because they have heard that we have a strong market for local foods and will work with our suppliers to diversify their crops and find their niche in the market. Our support of organizations like Land Stewardship Project’s Farm Beginnings Program and Minnesota Food Association’s Immigrant Farmer Training Program helps ensure that the number of small farmers in Minnesota continues to grow. New and seasoned locavores in our community enjoy our Local Product Guide, listing each local supplier and the number of miles they are from our stores, along with stickers on our shelves denoting the locally sourced products and local purchases totals on their receipts. Each week producers visit our stores to sample local products and meet their fans. Forty-five percent of our wholesale purchases were from local producers (MN, WI, IA, ND, SD) or Minnesotaowned businesses last year. This translates into millions of our shoppers’ dollars being circulated back into our local farms, who are then more likely to spend their dollars locally. It is inspiring to see how the efforts of small organizations, farmers, cooperatives and passionate individuals have ballooned into a local foods movement spreading across the country. From community gardens and farmers’ markets to farm-to-school programs and local foods legislation, we are delighted to continue our work and see the results manifest in our communities. a Liz McMann is Consumer Affairs Manager for Mississippi Market Co-op in St. Paul, consumer owned and controlled since 1979. Runes & volva stav

An interview with teacher Kari Tauring by Amy Putkonen

his month, I wanted to interview someone who could give us a taste of the study of runes. Runes are an ancient form of divination, but are not as well known as other more common forms of divination, such as tarot and astrology. Kari Tauring has been teaching and living the runes for several decades. She is an important resource in our holistic community — not only for her knowledge of runes, but also for her work with Volva Stav, a unique form of spiritual training that incorporates the indigenous teachings of the Norse traditions.

Welcome, Kari! I love how you mention in your book, The Runes — A Human Journey, that you can find rune patterns in nature, on sidewalks, etc. Are there any tips you can give us for how to learn to do this? Kari Tauring: Take the ice rune, for instance.

You can’t get to know it only by thinking about it or by recognizing its shape, the vertical line. You have to walk on it, walk over ice. Everyone from Minnesota understands this! When you walk on ice, you walk slowly. You secure your footing. It may be unconscious, but it’s physically necessary. You probably breathe differently while crossing ice. If you notice these things, you will understand that your spine is the ice rune itself. That is the process of reading the runes in nature. This is a Volva Stav way of living in the runes. Of course, the most important thing in recognizing the runes in nature or anywhere else is to memorize their shapes, names and meanings. Treat each rune like a new friend. Memorize how it looks. Memorize its name and one interesting fact about it. The more you recognize it, the more you will meet with it in your daily life. I recommend picking one rune a day to “attend” to. That way you can monitor the frequency of seeing that rune or being confronted with the concepts it represents. When you see it, greet it by name and ask it what’s up. That’s how you develop a relationship with runes. There are different name spellings, pronunciations and variations on meaning for the runes in Icelandic, Norwegian, Germanic and Anglo-Saxon. Any time you are dealing with a culturally specific system, language is an issue. Be fearless and don’t judge yourself when trying out the language — be playful and honoring. When I began to study runes in the late

holistic living

1980s, I made a big chart of the runes to hang on my wall. Each morning and evening, I stretched in front of the chart, playing with the sounds and rhythms of their names in the different languages and on the stretching breath. I began using runes in musical composition, choosing from their names based on the meter of my poetic expression. By the time I wrote the rune book in 2007, I was slipping in and out of different pronunciations for different purposes. When I asked my editor which pronunciations I should use he said, “Just use the ones you say.” As a result, the choices in my book are an organic mixture of the languages. I will be making an update for my book as an iPhone application this year, adding mp3s of my chanting each rune with its various names and rhythms. This will really help others, I think. At one point, you mentioned that you live according to the Earth-based 13 Moon calendar. How does this lifestyle differ from what we experience in the Roman 12-month calendar system? KT: The first thing it did for me was align

my body’s cycles with the cycles of the moon, creating hyper awareness of my body rhythms. First was the obvious, but startling, synchronization of menses to the moon. I began to mark daily and weekly biorhythms. I soon could track my body rhythms on the seasonal cycle. This hyper awareness made it hard to ignore the signals my body was sending me of its cyclical needs. It seems our society is based on this

disconnect. Sitting at a desk for extended periods of time, for example, became intolerable. Waking to an alarm rather than on a natural sleep cycle was difficult. Our calendar/clock system made meeting cyclical food and water needs difficult, as well. While living according to the moon cycles, fitting into the seven-day week, 9-5 productivity schedule that the rest of your society operates on can be difficult. I needed more flexible work and community relationships. It can be isolating. Your recent book is called Volva Stav Manual, named after the ceremonial wise woman of the Old Norse tradition. Can you please explain what the Volva Stav program is? How does one begin to study such a system? KT: Volva is the title for a staff-

carrying woman in Norse Tradition. “Carrying the staff” means that this woman is dedicated to aligning her own spine with the trunk of the world tree. Aligning our many bodies with the many dimensional worlds of the cosmic tree creates a Seidr State, a state of transcendence and awareness. The volva follows the 13 moons and seasonal cycle as she aligns her bodies. Volvas are Vandrekonas (wandering women) traveling both physically in the world and inter-dimensionally through the nine worlds of the tree. The use of the staff to ground and center as well as propel her through the worlds is called Gandreid (wand riding). If she is a Spakona (prophet), she works with the Norns (ancient female beings) using sound vibration to read individual Oorlog (something like karma) and the portion of the Web of Wyrd it is connected to (energetic grid work of Earth and community relationships). She can then see the potential geometry of the path a person or community is on, reading past, present and potential. If she is a Gamledokter (ancient healer) she will rely on her perceptions to shift or correct the strands of energy with the help of her spirit guides, the client’s ancestor spirits and possibly the spirits of the house or land. She may employ herbs and relationships in the natural world (Teinseid) to create remedies for illness. She will use Galdr (rune song) to create vibrational pathways for healing energy. If the client needs soul retrieval, the volva may gandreid to retrieve the broken pieces.

Volva Stav is a complete system for training to do these things. It is my own personal method developed over two decades of training in music, runes, martial arts, journey, dream work and the healing arts. I initially wrote it to go along with my four-hour intensive course, but it is also helpful on its own. I think someone with a master level of proficiency in other spiritual arts such as tai chi, energy work or yoga would be able to adapt to the exercises of Volva Stav. But the visualizations and culturally specific alignments are going to take some study. Start reading Norse mythology from as many sources as you can find. The language and terminology will take some doing, but don’t let that stop you. Be fearless in allowing the words to come out of your mouth. It’s better to honor a person by trying to say their name than just nod silently at them as they pass you by.

How can we incorporate the Volva Stav into our modern lives? How do you integrate it? KT: The first step is to slow down.

To be volva is to be in Verthandi, or present moment. Ultimately, it is the conscious awareness of breath, rhythm and alignment in the present moment that allows the Volva to attain the Seidr State. There is no set future if we remain at peace in the present moment. In Verthandi, we can make decisions intentionally rather than out of habit or impulse. We have time to evaluate the past, learn from the mistakes of our ancestors and understand their blessings for us before we strike out on our path. In Norse Tradition, we are not doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past, but we must know what they are and heal them. This is so key right now for humanity. We need to get present, forget our extremes and impulses, and heal dysfunctional behavior. Only in this way can we create a stable and functional future for the next generation. a For more information, visit, call 612.454.5068 or email Amy Putkonen is the owner of the US Wellness Directory and the Cirkla blog with more articles on this topic. Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)…This month is fabulous for writing, teaching, presenting and generally putting your hardearned wisdom out into the world. You also find money flowing much more easily than in the last two months. With so much creative energy moving, get your ideas out there — something good is bound to come back.

Star Wisdom | february 2011

by D.K. Brainard ebruary should be a much mellower month than January. The emphasis is on creativity, friendship and community.

Aries (Mar. 21-Apr. 19)…Pay attention to your changing goals, because you’re rewarded this year when you reach for the highest and best. Make a long-range plan and start taking baby steps to get there. (If you need help, by all means spend the money on a coach, career planner or other professional.) Now is so not the time to sell yourself short. Taurus (Apr. 20-May 20)…A new way of perceiving your status or reputation is emerging this month. Your career has felt amorphous, in flux, for so long now, but it’s starting to become clearer. This may involve letting go of one of your sacred cows — a career or status goal that secretly holds no meaning anymore. Embrace this new direction — you have to trust your intuition. Gemini (May 21-June 20)…Life gets a whole lot lighter this month. You’re still learning a lot but in a much more social, outerdirected way. Publishing, higher learning, foreign travel and metaphysical studies are lit up this month and you’ve got money luck on your side too. Watch for career opportunities after the 18th. Cancer (June 21-July 22)…Against all odds, seemingly out of nowhere, your career catches fire. This could cause tension within an existing partnership. But you’ve been building up to this moment for months now. Better to just dissolve a relationship that isn’t working and put a new framework in place. You give so much to others; you deserve to be supported as you reach for your potential. Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)…It’s time to drop some of the charity cases from your life and focus on maximizing your strengths. You’re usually a soft sell, but you will not suffer fools gladly this month. That’s good — the best

What’s up with that new 13th sign?

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)…You seem to be either moving or setting down roots this month; either way, the transformation you’re going through is changing how you feel about place. And this feels surprisingly liberating. Although Mars brings extra — but necessary — expenses, Venus in your sign gives you the attractive power to recuperate any losses.

Edge astrology columnist D.K. Brainard doesn’t mince words: “Ignore this bunk about a new 13th zodiac sign and that you are no longer the sign that you thought you were! Nothing has changed about your sign. There is no 13th zodiac sign.” Read his complete discussion of the issue, go to and look under the category “Life.” way to make the world a better place is to set a shining example of a life lived creatively. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)…You’re going to be working hard this month, so put your mind to the task from the outset. You may also decide a new job is in order — if so, you’ve got Mars in your work sector giving you all the drive you need to find better employment and Mercury bringing genius-level ideas to help you work smarter. Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)…Your creativity is off the charts this month! Navel-gazing is out and masterpiece creation is in. Of course, when you’re feeling this energized and passionate, it’s only natural to attract new people into your life. This month kicks off an extremely positive relationship period, so get clear on what you want in a lover, friend, or business partner. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)…You’ve got a new mindset this month; you’re finding it much easier to access positive thoughts, both about yourself and about others. This is good news, because you’re still engaged in some deep emotional archeology. Make sure you’ve got a compelling project to work on at home, or Mars in your 4th House could cause domestic strife. Things start to lighten up after the 18th.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)…Your time in seclusion has brought new insight into yourself and your relationships, but you’re finally out of the dark ages and back in the saddle this month. Feels good to be back on your horse, but careful where you swing that sword! With Mars in your sign, you might not know your own strength. Expect important relationship news around the 18th. Pisces (Feb. 19-Mar. 20)…Let life come to you until the Sun enters your sign on the 18th. This is a time to review and dream, learning from the events of the past year what you want to emphasize in 2011 and what you’d prefer not to repeat. You have a strong desire to be with friends, but monitor your energy and don’t overbook yourself. a Listen to “Edge Astrology with D.K. 7 ways to ground yourself by Judy Steele

hen we’re feeling nervous, anxious, worried, moving too fast and thinking too much, all our energy is focused in our minds and we’re not really in our bodies. We may feel harried, frantic and even panicky. If we’re having this kind of experience, we can be pretty sure that we’re disconnected energetically from the earth, and the various energies that are flying through our systems are not grounded. Our bodies and energy systems need a strong, reliable connection to the earth, just as a house needs a lightning rod for grounding. The purpose of a lightning rod is to conduct excess electrical charge into the earth, because the earth can take care of it. Here are seven ways that you can get yourself grounded. Using them regularly will help you to maintain a solid, fundamental connection to Mother Earth, and that reliable connection will help you stay calm and clear. This can be very helpful when there’s a lot going on in the world around you (think thunderstorms, tornado warnings, floods…).  See a line running from the base of your spine to the center of the earth. Make it a cord or rope or steel cable if you like, and attach it solidly at both ends. Feel it. Intentionally send all those flying energies down the cord to be neutralized in the earth. Do this frequently, so that it becomes habitual.  Use the Earth Mudra (hand position): Join the tip of your thumb to the tip of your ring finger. Extend the other fingers. Do this with both hands. This mudra (called the Prithivi Mudra) recharges the root chakra, aligning it with earth energies.  Use flower essences. FES (Flower Essence Services) and Bach/Healing Herbs

essences for grounding include Canyon Dudleya, Clematis, Corn, Lady’s Slipper, Rosemary, Shooting Star and Vervain. (Each of these addresses a different aspect of grounding.) There are also essences for fear, obsessive thinking, worry, anxiety and the other feelings that may be part of your ungrounded experience.  Use TAT (Tapas Acupressure Technique)® or EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) or any energy psychology technique you know to address your ungroundedness and to bring you into the calm, centered state you want.  Inhale at the top of your head, and exhale at the soles of your feet. Do this a number of times. Then inhale at a point above your head and exhale at a point below the soles of your feet. Do this a number of times. You should feel your center of gravity moving downward.  Greet the Earth Mother and ask her to make a strong connection from her center up to your feet and legs, to the base of your spine, and from there up through your other energy centers. Call on that connection for support, strength and nurturing.  Walk on the Earth, sit on the ground with your back against a tree (or against a horse’s front legs, if you have a friendly and cooperative horse). Hug a tree. Tell a flowering bush how beautiful it is. Enjoy having a body. Salute a sunrise or a sunset. Celebrate the experience of being a human on this amazing planet! a Judy Steele, MTP, offers transpersonal counseling, flower essences, homeopathy, sound healing, Tapas Acupressure Technique (TAT)® and other forms of energy psychology, and much more. My favorite films of 2010 by Stephen Simon

am honored and proud to be a voting member of The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences that nominates and then votes each year for the Oscars. I have said often, however, that I have absolutely no idea how to judge a “Best” film or actor or screenplay or anything else. To attempt to do so seems akin to going into the Louvre and picking out the “best” painting. My favorite films list is indeed just that: films that I particularly enjoyed, not ones that I necessarily believe that the Academy will embrace. So, please add your own list, dark, light and everything in between, and let’s have fun with this! That being said, I look forward to your responses and to seeing a list of your favorite films of 2010. Here are mine: 1. The King’s Speech.

My absolute favorite film of 2010. Brilliantly acted, written, directed, produced, photographed and designed, The King’s Speech is an Old Hollywood movie at its very best: intensely human, poignant, heroic and fiercely funny, with character development that has become all but a lost art in recent years. Lastly, I’m not sure I remember a year in which the Acting Oscar seems so assured as it is this year for Colin Firth in his role as King George VI. 2. Hereafter. Clint Eastwood’s direction seems to get better, deeper and more emotionally vulnerable with each film and Hereafter just may be my favorite of all his films to date. The film

itself is a fascinating and engrossing exploration of two stories that ultimately intertwine: the effect that a near-death experience has on a television personality (lovely and talented French actress Cecile de France) and how a psychic (Matt Damon) runs away from and then ultimately re-embraces his gift. I was deeply moved by everything about Hereafter, a truly haunting and beautiful film. 3. Inception. Writerdirector Christopher Nolan has created one of the most imaginative, complex, intricate and original films of this or any other year. Inception is an experience that is almost impossible to describe. I’ve seen it three times now, and each time I see something in the film that I hadn’t noticed before. Only Avatar and The Matrix series of films come to mind when trying to find a comparable film world that illuminates new horizons of consciousness. Inception is brilliant in every aspect, with an unforgettable last shot that will provoke conversations for years to come. 4. The Social Network.

A totally entertaining, “are-you-kidding-me” account of Mark Zuckerberg’s creation (with a lot of help from his “friends”) of the Internet phenomenon Facebook. It’s almost surreal to note that Facebook, now with over 500 million subscribers and an estimated value of more than $25 billion, only began as recently as 2003 when Zuckerberg and his business partner and best friend Eduardo Saverin were attending Harvard. The Social Network chronicles the meteoric and controversial success of Facebook, which shattered friendships, led to

lawsuits and bitter confrontations, and is a classic American success story, framed perfectly by the scandal-ridden first decade of this new century. 5. The Company Men.

Beautifully and sensitively written, acted and directed, The Company Men is an important and timely film for anyone who has been fired from his or her job and descended into fear and guilt. The film follows three men (Ben Affleck, Chris Cooper and Tommy Lee Jones) who are fired from what they considered safe career jobs after the economy went south in late 2008. The movie delves into the psyche and home life of each man as they cope with the shock, shame, anger and desperation that anyone who has been fired feels to their depth of soul. This film is full of love, compassion and redemption. If you’ve been fired, or know someone who has (which covers almost everyone everywhere, yes?), The Company Men (which opened nationwide on January 21 after a short Academy qualifying run in December) will resonate deeply and also give you hope that tomorrow is indeed another day. 6. Secretariat. This is

an inspiring story of faith, love, trust, redemption and hope. Secretariat is also this year’s version of The Blind Side, in that it is touching, poignant, uplifting, life-enhancing and based on a true story about a determined and powerful woman. Secretariat focuses on Penny Chenery Tweedy’s relationship with her father and a very special horse that became perhaps the greatest race horse ever. Grab your kids, your parents, your grand-

holistic living

parents and anyone else you can find, and go see Secretariat, a film that the whole family will enjoy. 7. Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work. Joan Rivers’

sheer courage and honesty is simply heroic. At 77, Ms. Rivers has been entertaining and outraging audiences for over 40 years, which in and of itself speaks volumes about her talent, appeal, and perseverance. (Warning: the language is salty and profane.) Rivers is so vulnerably honest and forthcoming about herself that it’s almost impossible not to walk away from the film with a deep sense of respect and affection for her. She says: “Look, I’m a performer. That’s all I am and all I ever want to be.” 8. Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. Wall

Street: Money Never Sleeps focuses on how the Gordon Gekko character that Michael Douglas made famous in the original 1987 Wall Street film has “evolved” after spending eight years in jail, leaving his family in ruins. What makes the Gekko character so relevant and even more disturbing now is the eerie similarity to Bernard Madoff, a real-life Gekko on steroids, so to speak, now serving a life sentence for his crimes.

City Island. City Island is a charming, funny and down-to-earth comedy about the consequences of the deceptions that families often use when they are afraid to tell each the truth. As the film plays out, and the deceptions become harder and harder to conceal, each member of the family learns the truth of the brilliant ad line for the film: “Truth is stranger than family.” City Island is an absolute gem. 9.

10. Tangled. Disney’s wonderful Tangled hearkens back to the classic Disney days when they made magical movies like The Little Mermaid, which had the same feel of love and fun. Putting a new musical and comic spin on the Rapunzel story, Tangled is a wondrous mixture of fun, adventure, romance, heroes and heroines, a charismatic horse whom you won’t soon forget, and sensational music. A wonderful family film.

So, that’s my list for 2010. What’s yours? Please join our community and join the conversation! a

I chop the first one without flinching fling it to the ground grab the next hack it off with a smile a premeditated gleam deep within my heart no small task, I realize without falter, I continue does my smile mask my fear? my pain? my anger? The next one falls and another and another like autumn leaves stirred from slumber wanting to cling to their home base but they’re plucked away from their lifeblood that they can’t enjoy anyway they’re gone in a moment and I stare at myself wisp away the remains clean and straighten although the evidence is with me clear upon my head I’m naked as the trees in winter awaiting snow to crest their branches and kiss them softly pressing firmly against their bellies protecting them without asking. My head rages with openness my third eye soaring my heart reeling I sit screaming releasing letting go without the tears needed punching my insides fighting against the wall the fortress I’ve built my mighty Gare du Nord a haven for my soul impenetrable from the outside inescapable from within where are my kisses and protection my blanket that I’m awaiting? Resolve to love yourself …just as you are by Judith Froemming

new year has begun. You think, with a sigh, that you haven’t lost those 20 pounds, you’re still working at the same unfulfilling job and you are still in the same power struggle with your wife / husband / lover / child / yourself. Where did the possibilities go? A client recently asked, “Is there a trick to making a good New Year’s Resolution?” There is no trick, except in the mind. The only thing that I have to do is question my thoughts about having to be better, work harder and go faster. What if where I am is exactly where I’m supposed to be? My life is my teacher. What if I’m enough, just as I am? That’s a peaceful thought, and in thinking it, I feel better. If I try to force myself to change through tricks and manipulations, I end up pushing the same rock up the same hill over and over again. So I stop pushing against and start going with myself. Where did this need to constantly push and bend ourselves into a pretzel of twisted improvement come from? We were told a story. When I was a very little girl, I was told that there was a Santa Claus. About age 7 or 8, a sixth grader told me that Santa Claus was made up. I was confused and sad, but my mom told me that it was true. She told me that I was growing up now and grown-ups don’t believe in Santa Claus. I didn’t find that very helpful, so she told me that I’d still get presents. I felt a little better. When she told me that I could help trick my younger brother, I felt even better. This is just one of the stories I was told. But at least I was told it was a story. Another story that I was told when I was very young was that I was born originally sinful (read: not good enough) and that if I didn’t try hard to be better, I’d be punished. A lot. No one came back later and told me that this story was also made up. It was. And it was a very scary story for a child. Most of us carry a version of it with us today at the subconscious level. Even if we’ve personally walked away from this particular doctrine, its residue permeates the subconscious level of our culture. In many ways we’re still pushing, rushing and forcing to get our lives right, to be better, to go faster because no one came back and told us it’s all made up. We’re good enough. Even rush hour is made up. I don’t have to rush to improve my life. When I

create calm hour and calm life, I thrive. As it turns out, I’m originally blessed. When I live my original blessing, my deep sense of inadequacy dissolves. I begin to trust that my own life will guide me and teach me. I begin to trust that when I do what gives me energy, I thrive and become who I really am. I create my life’s purpose with Joy and Balance. And no pushing is needed. Life happens on its own. It’s a flowing river. All I have to do is turn my canoe downstream and paddle with the flow instead of against it. I can trust the process, this natural flow of life. Instead of living my life, life lives me. It gets easier. Discover the benefits of curiosity and openness. Learn to live in the flow of the Universe. Here are three simple steps to help you begin:  Find a quite place to sit, close your eyes and take a slow, deep breath into your diaphragm (visualize blowing up a balloon in your belly). Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. Make your exhale twice as long as your inhale. For example, breathe in to the count of 4 and out to the count of 8. Keep it at the same pace. You don’t have to do it perfectly. Human beings do better with practice.  Take another deep breath in (as above) and on the exhale say in your mind, “I live and breathe in the flow of the Universe.” Repeat this for 5-20 minutes, 2 or 3 times a day, until you feel calm and open. Be curious about what you notice. Rather than judge it, see what you can learn from it. As thoughts, pictures or memories come into your mind, thank them and simply return to your intention statement. You don’t have to do it perfectly. There is no such thing as a mistake. There is only new information.  Through-out the day, anytime you are about to judge yourself or anyone else, say to yourself (like you really mean it), “I love you, (your name)” and smile. Trungpa Rinpoche says, “People always want to change their lives instead of using their lives to wake up.” a Judith A.
