n each moment, each of us is engaged in creation. Creating song. Creating a walk to the park. Creating a meal.

Creating a dialogue on why the sky is blue, with a child. Creating anxiety, sitting in a line of cars, not moving.

Creating love.

As we expand and connect these moments, we see our path, where we were, and where we are. The wisdom learned along the way. An experience that will not be forgotten soon. Something that touched the soul. Or perhaps, a routine part of the day that suddenly became steps walking upon a moving planet, in gratitude, instead of going down the sidewalk to get the mail. Every moment, in its full glory, is to be celebrated.

During the next twelve months, The Edge invites you to share your experiences with us, so we can share them with the community at large. Each featured topic in 2012 relates to your experience, to your journey, your pathway, and what you felt and how it has shaped your life.

We are living in magnificent times. We believe each human being is magnificent and has an incredible part to add to the tapestry that is life. By removing labels — rich and poor, educated and uneducated and even leaders and followers — each individual has the opportunity to reclaim his or her place in the whole, and to unfold and bloom and share the wonderful gifts each possess. We exist within a field of synchronicity, where the many attributes of each individual can combine with those of others, to create something new.

But for any of this to happen, each of us must show up, take our places, unfold and begin to experience our potentials with others. Truly it is time to immerse and indulge ourselves in experience.

It’s about experience as you weave your way through a never-ending string of ah-ha! moments. It’s about the healing you’ve endured to become whole again, and the amazing insights and wisdom that were left in the wake of your struggles.

It’s about a given moment when senses awaken, eyes wide open to truth, when the whole universe moves in complete synchronicity, as you stand on a street corner in the middle of the day. It’s about being, and the experiences you choose to create. Your experience is just as relevant — and vital to the whole — as anyone else’s on the planet.

There’s something magical that happens when we read about the experiences of others like us, and then find tremendous resonance with the story. Not only do we feel authentic inspiration, but more importantly, the fact that we perceive the author to be more like ourselves removes the self-defeating barrier we tend to keep that says, “I’ll never be like her,” or “I’ll never be as wise as he is.”

For this purpose of sharing our experiences, let’s step outside of the teacher-student paradigm, into a middle ground where we are all just humans, being. We are neither teachers nor students. We are a beautiful ocean of vibrant souls sharing powerful stories about their journeys so that others may realize the power of their own experiences and one day come to share them, as well.

Beyond the label, what makes some food more super than others?

First of a two-part series ach week, I muster the energy to shop for the week’s groceries. It’s never fun. I don’t like to grocery shop. And adding to my dislike is the confusion: What really is best for me to eat?

What labels or brands do I trust? I consider myself an informed consumer, and yet still struggle with what to buy. Every sign and label is trying to convince me of the health benefits: low calorie, no trans fats, high in fiber.

Then I stumble upon the dreaded “superfood” labels, touting some sort of health benefits just short of miracles.

The foods are often exotic looking, and while a superfood sounds like a great thing to consume, I’m skeptical. I never know if it’s just marketing. So I keep walking.

Superfoods are perplexing for a couple of reasons. One is the marketing involved. The word is slapped on supplements, powders and pills and sold for high prices online with some sort of health claim built in. The whole idea preys on the cultural ideal of quick fixes and promising to bring people to higher levels of health quickly and easily.

Similar to this is the generality of the word itself.

There is no solid definition of the term and it’s used with different meanings in different contexts. The most general, but commonly accepted definition, is that superfoods are foods that are nutrient-dense, yet low calorie, and provide more benefits than they do harm. Vague, I know. Another controversial part of the superfoods argument is that all fruits and vegetables could be considered superfoods since they are all generally low-calorie, high-nutrient (vitamins and minerals) foods. Within this argument is the idea that the best way to get nutrients is to eat whole foods, or foods in their original forms, and preferably organic.

Katie Jasper, a Certified Holistic Health Counselor at Katie Jasper Health [www.katiejasper.com] thinks there is legitimacy to the notion that some foods are more powerful than others, and she helps her clients find practical ways to work them into their diets. Further, Jasper believes that the most powerful foods, or superfoods, are the ones that help decrease inflammation in the body. A growing body of evidence is looking at cellular inflammation as the cause of chronic disease and illness and, thus, eating anti-inflammatory foods is a way to increase health and well-being.

Now that we have covered some of the background information about superfoods, it’s time to look at what foods are considered superfoods. The blessing or the curse, whichever way you look at it, is that nutritionists, physicians, scientists, media outlets and laypeople all have an idea about what foods are the most important superfoods. Many of these people have developed top ten lists.

However, all the lists are different. To help de-complicate this issue, I have assembled a consolidated list of superfoods, their healthful properties and, where appropriate,

easy ways to incorporate them into your diet.

Below are the five most commonly mentioned superfoods. Jasper is a strong proponent of each of these foods for their anti-inflammatory and immunity boosting properties, especially for this time of year. One thing to keep in mind is that the root source is preferred over a pill or powder, but sometimes people can’t physically ingest the amount necessary to be beneficial, so in those cases, Jasper says a pill or powder from a reputable source can be beneficial.

Turmeric

Turmeric is an herb that has been used for thousands of years for cooking and as part of the Ayurvedic philosophy, where it is often used for its anti-aging and skin protection properties. The main component attributed to the health benefits of turmeric is the pigment, which is called curcumin.

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Turmeric may help treat Alzheimers, cancer and arthritis, and has many studies to support these claims. Less common benefits, according to NIH, may include heartburn (dyspepsia), stomach pain, diarrhea, intestinal gas, stomach bloating, loss of appetite, jaundice, liver problems and gallbladder disorders, headaches, bronchitis, colds, lung infections, fibromyalgia, leprosy, fever, depression, water retention, worms, kidney problems, menstrual problems, and cancer, although little research has been done to study these claims.

Turmeric is a highly popular research topic right now and the many studies are starting to show its healthpromoting components. It has antioxidant, anti-fungal, anti-cancer and anti-bacterial properties, and most importantly, it is a powerful anti-inflammatory.

The easiest way to add turmeric to your diet is to use it as a spice. Include it in dry rubs or marinades, sprinkle it on stir-fries, or use it in soups or stews. Turmeric does have a strong flavor, but can be used whenever other kitchen spices are used. If cooking with it doesn’t fit your palate, supplements are available as both turmeric and curcumin.

Garlic

Garlic, another herb commonly used in cooking, has been used as a medicinal food for millennia. It has been found to be a strong anti-inflammatory, helps fight infection and has antibacterial and antiviral properties. Flavonoids, sulfurcontaining nutrients and amino acids in garlic, may be the component responsible for its health benefits. The most common benefits of garlic are its ability to fight cancer and help with cardiovascular issues such as high blood pressure, heart disease, atherosclerosis, and high

cholesterol. Research does support these claims. One notable finding is that garlic may be able to reduce blood pressure and slow the progression of hardening of the arteries.

According to NIH, other less-studied uses may include prevention of cancer, enlarged prostate, diabetes, osteoarthritis, hay fever, traveler’s diarrhea, cold and flu, fever, headache, stomach ache, sinus congestion, gout, rheumatism, hemorrhoids, asthma, bronchitis, shortness of breath, snakebites, strengthening the immune system, preventing tick bites, and fighting stress or fatigue, and treating infections. Evidence also supports the topical use of garlic for fungal infections such as ringworm, jock itch, and athlete’s foot. What can be deduced from this extensive list is that garlic has the potential to be a powerful medicinal food, and the scientific community is taking note, as well.

Garlic is a cooking staple in many homes, but probably not to the degree necessary to derive the most benefit. The easiest way to use garlic is to simply add it to existing recipes, such as soups, stews, stir fries, sauces, marinades and seasonings. If garlic doesn’t work for you, supplements are available.

Ginger

Ginger is another herb commonly used in cooking and is a staple in Asian medicine, where it is used for digestive or stomach issues, such as stomach aches, nausea, motion sickness, morning sickness, gas and diarrhea.

Potent anti-inflammatory elements called gingerols may be responsible for the myriad of health benefits from eating ginger. Research has found ginger to be effective for treating nausea. Other uses, as stated by NIH, include treating rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, joint pain, muscle pain, upper respiratory infections, bronchitis, coughs, Ginger’s healthful benefits come from its antiinflammatory, antibacterial, antibiotic, antioxidant and detoxification properties.

Ginger — a root that looks quite odd — is one of those foods that people just don’t know what to do with it. The easiest way to use ginger is in tea. Many teas on the market include ginger, or you could ground a bit of ginger root to steep at home. Another great usage is in a juicer. Ginger adds a wonderful flavor, but you have to be careful with how much you add. The taste can be a bit abrasive to some, so begin using it conservatively. If ginger doesn’t fit your palate, supplements are available.

Healthy Fats (Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Avocado, and Omega-3 Fatty Acids)

Not long ago, fat was a dirty word, and many today still think all fats are made equal. Well, they are not. We now know that there are healthy fats, and they are found in a variety of places. The most common ones that are considered superfoods include extra virgin olive oil, avocado and Omega-3 fatty acids from salmon and flaxseeds.

Extra virgin olive oil and avocado are both good sources of monounsaturated fats and are said to help lower cholesterol. Extra virgin olive oil has been found to reduce cancer risk, lower blood pressure and December 2011 edge magazine

improve cardiovascular health.

Omega-3 fatty acids most commonly come from fish sources, such as salmon and sardines. However, eating enough fish is challenging for many people and many of us simply do not consume enough Omega-3s. Many fish oil supplements exist and several integrative physicians recommend fish oil supplements for everyone.

Jasper says she isn’t a huge proponent of supplements, but does recommend fish oils to all of her clients. It’s just that important.

Omega-3s are powerful anti-inflammatory agents and may help protect from respiratory infections. Similar to other superfoods, Omega-3s contain polyphenols, which are known to reduce inflammation. In addition to fish, flaxseed is a great source of Omega-3 fatty acids. It has been said to reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes, due directly to its anti-inflammatory abilities.

Similar to the other superfoods, olive oil can be added to just about anything. Use it to make your own marinades, toss some into your favorite salad (use with vinegar for a simple dressing), pour it over pasta, or as the moisture agent in gently cooking vegetables. One caution is that extra virgin olive oil has a low heat point, and you never want it to get hot enough to smoke.

Avocados are great on salads, as a spread on sandwiches, in guacamole or other dips, or sliced as a simple snack.

Flaxseed can be tossed into salads, soups, stews, oatmeal, shakes or just about anything you can think of.

When freshly ground, they virtually disappear into what food you add them in, and have little to no flavor.

Fish can be grilled, baked, broiled, and anything in between. You could always try a little olive oil, turmeric, garlic and ginger as seasonings for a real superfood punch.

Tea

Both green and black teas are beneficial.

The main component of tea with the health-promoting capabilities is polyphenols or flavonoids, which are antioxidants that come from some plant-based foods. Teas also contain a variety of vitamins and minerals. Low doses of caffeine may also play a role.

While teas come in a variety of formulas, here I am talking about basic black or green teas, which are from the same plant, but processed differently. Tea has been found to boost immunity, control cholesterol levels, help fight viruses, prevent dental cavities, reduce blood pressure and risk of stroke, and prevent and treat breast, stomach, prostate, colon, gastric, lung and skin cancers. Other common uses include improving mental alertness, aiding in weight loss, treating stomach issues such as vomiting and diarrhea, headaches, osteoporosis, treating HPV and protecting skin from the sun.

Some scientific evidence exists to support these uses. According to NIH, green tea is often used for Crohn’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, kidney stones and chronic fatigue.

Further, black tea is used to improve mental alertness, memory, learning and information processing. Also, teas are commonly used as diuretics.

To get maximum benefit from teas, drinking multiple cups a day is required. Be sure to buy teas from reputable sources, and preferably organic.

Now that you have an understanding of what superfoods are, I challenge you to begin using these foods more often. Jasper recommends slow change. Maybe choose one food each week to focus on, or use only the items you already have, such as olive oil. Once you are comfortable with the one item, begin to introduce more. The best way to make change is to slowly work with your existing lifestyle.

Jasper urges us to become an active participant in our health.

Begin asking questions, think about why you want to include these foods more often and rather than doing it just because you feel like you should, learn what works for you and take small steps to include more of those things that do work. WHAT H E A V E N C AN H E A R

ast December, I decided to attend a retreat in Finland, of all places. A retreat in — say, Bermuda — might’ve been preferable that time of year, especially for a Minnesotan. But the Finnish retreat would be led by Dave Oshana, a spiritual teacher I admire and respect, so I put on my heated socks, zipped up my parka and got on a plane.

The retreat was held on a small island on the edge of the Baltic Sea, three hours southwest of Helsinki. Starlight reflected off snowy hills as we drove to our destination.

That area of Finland is so sparsely populated I didn’t see so much as a streetlight for long stretches.

There were about 20 of us in all, and we stayed in a large farmhouse on the island. A sizable A-frame nearby was used for our group meetings. It was on the last night of my visit that something quite remarkable happened.

As I sat quietly in the vaulted structure waiting for our evening session to begin, I looked out the window at the evergreens laden with fresh snow, and felt like I was in a Christmas card — or perhaps some holiday movie from the ’40s with Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed and Bing Crosby.

I wouldn’t have been surprised if, at that moment, jolly St. Nick himself came sliding up with a team of Finnish reindeer.

I was also struck by the quiet and peace that descended upon us as we sat surrounded by flickering candles. Dave began our last night together by posing a simple question: “What do you think of God?” The attorney next to me gave a thoughtful answer that reflected his fine intellect. I was up next…Hmmm, what to say? I certainly have read many books on the subject and so I shared what I thought was a clever point: “Thomas Aquinas, arguably the greatest Christian theologian ever, concluded at the end of his life that he only knew one thing for sure — that we can never know what God is, we can only know what God is not.” In other words, our finite pea brains will never be able comprehend the infinite. Yet, even with all our limitations, we can know that God is not ignorant, cruel, prejudice or unfair. As the next person

responded, I was left feeling rather pleased with my answer.

When we got to the far corner of the room, a long-term student of Dave’s broke down in a deep sob and recounted how he had almost died in a plane crash in China. He concluded by saying that in that moment, he had experienced a grace that he could not express in words. The woman next to him then spoke through tears of a heartwrenching loss and that she, too, had experienced a peace beyond understanding.

Afterward, Dave asked the class who we thought had dared to be the most open, honest and vulnerable? We were unanimous: the two in the corner. He then asked to whom would we like to go to and comfort? Unanimous again: the two in the corner.

Dave went on to say that in the end, when all that is artificial in us is stripped away, what is left is our true essence, and that essence is one with heaven. All you have to do is look into the eyes of a baby to understand what this essence is…purity, innocence, curiosity, joy and a sense of wonder.

The two students in the corner were willing to be open, honest and vulnerable and, as a result, we each felt compelled to comfort them. If we, burdened by selfishness and other human failings, instinctively wanted to comfort them, then how much more does heaven — i.e., God — want to comfort these people?

Dave concluded by saying that heaven is tuned into our hearts and simply can’t hear the clever arguments and righteous opinions of the mind. The compassion of heaven is limitless and eagerly awaits our call, but it is tuned into only one frequency: hearts that are open, honest and vulnerable.

All else is static.

Breaking through: Transformation through painting

y recent three-day journey into watercolor painting and spirituality at the Christine Center in Willard, WI was, in a sense, quite transformative.

Disclaimer: My last experience with watercolor painting was in kindergarten.

Painting? What was I thinking? Well, I wasn’t, at least not about the painting. That was the least of my worries.

The bit of breaking from my destructive and dangerously affixed routine? That one had my mind spinning. I’m not a traveler. I’m not a stuff-outside-my-tiny-safe-box doer.

But my safe-box is crushing me.

Desperate for some spark of fire, of will for healing, I embarked on this personal retreat, leaving as a skinny, fading, hurt and hopeless white girl and returned as a… pregnant submissive Asian woman.

I was guided and encouraged by facilitator Dr. JohnAnthony Parente, who holds degrees in spirituality, theology and art, and has worked as a professional artist and professor for over 30 years, in addition to being immersed in contemplative and monastic life.

As we viewed our wet-on-wet full-page color bleeds that we’d dried overnight, we were instructed to journal on what we saw. All I saw was a ridiculous “smiley face.”

John saw a face, too, but it took a gentle outline by him for me to see it, her, as well. Since I hated the platitude of my obvious vision, I went with John’s. Was I distrusting my intuition by accepting this direction? Or was I allowing the grace and guidance offered by a greater force?

As I practiced edging and blending, my happy face morphed into her hairpiece, and her profile and robe took shape. I didn’t feel connected to her, spiritually or mystically or emotionally or however I was supposed to be feeling about the image, but I painted on. I mean, I paid for the workshop; I might as well practice technique.

But it nagged me. This wasn’t representing me. I didn’t even see her to begin with. I’m not Asian, I could never get a hairpiece in my thin mop, and most absurdly I was working with this stupid stereotype of Asian women that kept creeping into my consciousness. Due to knowledge of Asian culture as deep as the media I’ve been exposed to (Madame Butterfly, Geisha stories, Tour of Duty, Miss Saigon…), I’ve held a ridiculous typecast of Asian women as submissive to men, which was my first reaction to developing her in my piece. Well crap – at a man’s suggestion, I’d painted my soul as a symbol of subservience?

 Painting continued from page 13 I slept on it, and thanks to a bit of coffee, a measure of meditation, and a dose of expert direction, I began to see the un-ego-filtered meaning of submissiveness.

Surrender. Yield. Let go. Trust.

This is why I came to a spiritual retreat. Not to paint, but to let go of my tight grip and trust… the flow, the process, God. The painting process had supported that deeper awareness without my control. Imagine that.

So I gave her an arm, holding her heart as she gazed to the horizon (which I was told I edged magnificently!) And I was finished with her. I had my meaning, my significance, my ME in the painting.

Or so I thought. The finishing touches on this piece of my heart came from community. Upon final viewing, it was suggested to me privately by three separate retreat participants that my woman appeared pregnant.

Honestly, it was something in her shape that I’d noticed but would not acknowledge, for a number of personal reasons. But the imagery was clarified by others as way beyond bearing children, and offered a sense of hopefulness. Something is forming inside me, preparing to be birthed… something originating from this relinquishment of ego-controlled reign. Something supported by the practice of trust in the present moment.

Maybe that something today is simply this realization. Or maybe it’s the somethings that will continue to rise from the horizon.

I don’t know, but I’m going to keep painting the present, edging the emergences as they enter consciousness, glazing through the flow, and bleeding new beginnings. Trusting the process, and submitting to what surfaces on the paper and in life…the good, the bad, and apparently, the cross-cultural. a Clare L. Control your reactions – and determine your destination

ne minute you can be traveling along feeling peaceful and loving towards yourself and the world – then you meet someone, they say something and the next minute you’ve been completely taken away from your peace. At this point you have a choice: you can blame the other person or use your reaction as a learning opportunity to grow and learn to experience your world in a more peaceful and loving way.

To do this, it is important to be able to begin to understand your inner world in terms of your thoughts and feelings. This involves developing skills to observe your thoughts and feelings – which are actually the same thing – rather than being swept away by them.

Your thoughts determine how you feel; for example, if you are thinking “I love my life” on a regular basis, you are likely to feel great. However, if you were repeatedly thinking, “life is a struggle,” you would quite possibly feel sad or even depressed.

When you develop the ability to observe your reactions and thoughts in a loving way they will begin to flow energetically through your body. It is as if you are the chariot driver, your feelings are the chariot and the horses are your thoughts. As the chariot driver you want to be in charge of the horses, otherwise they can run away and you can end up in undesirable situations.

Your reactions are a wonderful guide

to what is really going on in your inner world. Very strong feelings are involved in reactions, which are brain responses associated with survival.

Reactions are caused by a small nutshaped structure in the brain, known as the amygdala, which scans the environment for signs of danger. It is associated with emotions such as fear, rage, anger, and fight or flight. If the amygdala senses danger, it will signal the body to either act aggressively (fight) or withdraw (flight). The fight response manifests in things such as road rage, saying things you don’t mean and later wishing you could take it back, while flight may make you feel “frozen,” unable to find the right words to say.

This survival system is lightningfast, providing an immediate subconscious reaction to an event. You know that a reaction has taken place when you feel an emotional charge and generally don’t feel very good. Words such as triggered, hooked in and my

buttons were pressed are often used to describe the event. Strong physiological changes can take place, such as: a pounding heart, shallow breathing, feeling shaky, a tight feeling in your stomach and a fuzzy head. This is because your whole body is getting ready to fight or to take flight!

Reactions develop in childhood when a child’s reasoning centers are not fully developed, so they process the world in an emotional way. If a child grows up in an aggressive household, the amygdala may give the child signals to withdraw from a potentially dangerous situation (flight). This allows the child to draw less attention to him or herself and perhaps remain physically safe. The problem occurs when that person is in a similar situation as an adult. Any similarly aggressive situation, large or small, can trigger a flight reaction, as this pathway was programmed in the brain in the past and is now automatic. The adult will find him or herself reacting and withdrawing without wanting to. The reaction is often not proportional to the situation and leaves the adult feeling confused and out of control.

Part of the survival response is due to diminished frontal brain activity, which makes it harder to think clearly. Therefore, when the amygdala is overactive, we may overreact to a stimulus rather than provide a measured response.

By observing our reactions in a loving way, without blaming others, we can start to create new patterns of behavior that will allow us to respond to situations, rather than react.

If you find yourself reacting to a situation:  Get away from the other person (they could be reacting too) and allow yourself some “space” to process the reaction.  Ask yourself how you are feeling, for example angry or hurt.  Learn to just observe this feeling with love (no judgement or blame). In the past you may have had good reason to feel like this and your feelings were not validated.  Acknowledge and validate the feeling, whatever it may be.  In the process of containing and observing the feeling, an unconscious belief or attitude may come to the surface, such as: “I hate men,” which is fueling your anger. This is probably not going to support your having a great current day relationship with a man and could create an area in your life which is not flowing.  Once you are aware of the thought (awareness is the key to growth) you can change it to something that supports you, such as: “I love men,” which will manifest in more fulfilling relationships.

Awareness of your inner world over time allows you to gain some understanding of your subconscious world and the thoughts that are often blocking your way to peace and happiness. itual has its roots in religion, and life’s fundamental passages are often traditionally accompanied by religious ritual.

But life’s great passages are by nature spiritual. They affirm human mystery and mutability, our connection with the universal. Rituals serve as a bridge between our outer and inner worlds, between the profane and the sacred, and between the ordinary and the extraordinary.

Rituals:

1. Afford us a sense of belonging. When we engage in the ritual process we are, in essence, connected to “original time.” Rituals awaken that which is eternal within us and show us how our individual lives are part of a much grander design.

2. Connect us with nature and the seasons. The ongoing transitions that occur in nature provide the prototype for change. By watching the constant shifts and turns in nature we recognize our own cycles of life, our own rhythms as humans. Rituals remind us of the interconnectedness of all of life.

3. Provide us with a sense of renewal. They offer us a time-out from our everyday routine, habitual existence. Metaphorically, rituals are oases, a time to rest, replenish, and restore our selves on our long and winding path through life. Rituals help us to reevaluate our journey thus far and to reaffirm that the path we are traveling is the right one for us.

4. Provide an ongoing way to structure our lives. The ritual process provides a sense of stability and continuity amidst the ever-changing, hectic and often chaotic world in which we live.

Rituals engender a sense of healing calm and a feeling of trust in life’s flow and forward movement.

Ancient cultures also knew that everything is sound, oscillation, and rhythm, and that our body consists of color and light. The apparently solid parts are merely a form of intensive illusion — a lucid dream. Physicists discovered some time ago that each individual cell gives off light, and that it is possible to make this light visible. Further, it changes when the condition of the cell changes.

The long-term scientific world view is both sad and meaningless, as it has done little to incorporate Einstein’s realization into the education of health professionals. Medical schools are extremely reluctant to accept that the body houses feelings, thoughts and instincts, all of which play a big role where illness is concerned.

It is even rarer to hear medical professionals acknowledge that thoughts and feelings also heal, let alone see them engage in the ongoing development of such methods.

Yet, we have all experienced this firsthand.

How do we feel when we are in love? We are ready to take on anything! Do you know anyone who became ill in the midst of falling in love?

How do we feel when we are depressed, suffer from stress, or are desperate? What had cooled in our soul the last time we caught a cold?

We know all the connections and do not need textbooks to verify them. They tell us only one thing: health is a matter of many various energies and connections.

“Strange” things happen in nature. They have all been proven scientifically and can be easily duplicated, but they cannot all be explained with modern methods: • When pests attack trees at the edge of a forest, the affected trees produce certain chemicals in self-defense. Not only that, but simultaneously, the trees at the other end of the forest react the same way, even though the arrival of the pest is still a few weeks away.

• When kittens are taken too early from the mother cat, they barely learn to catch mice, if at all. They remain amateur hunters for a long time. If you put these incapable kittens into a cage at night to sleep in the same room with caged cats who are experienced hunters (so that the experienced cats cannot demonstrate their hunting skills), the young cats learn within a few days how to catch mice without ever having seen it.

While in Europe, he kept a diary in which he made note of high stress situations — when he was stuck in traffic, shortly before a big speech, a split second of fear, and so on.

When he returned home after six weeks, he discovered that the measuring devices on his plant had spiked during those moments when he was under great stress in Europe.

• A nursing mother is visiting a neighbor miles away, and her baby is peacefully sleeping at home. Suddenly, in the middle of the conversation, the mother starts lactating, and at the same time, the baby wakes up hungry. If the child awakens for another reason, the mother has a different response.

Take a few minutes to think about these examples.

Ask yourself in each case how the information might have been transmitted. What is the common denominator? The answer is that we are beings of light — every living thing is.

De-stress, and even rejuvenate, during the busy Holiday Season

veryone knows all too well the stress of the holiday season, the running from one family gathering to the next, having to prepare food to bring to each event, going and purchasing gifts at crowded stores and shopping centers, workload increasing because of holiday vacations…and this season, there is the added stressor for many people of not having the finances to do the holiday things they have done in the past, or to pay the increase in heating costs, and the list goes on and on.

There are some simple, cost-effect ways to help with this stress of the holiday season, or in any time of year.

From a holistic standpoint, the energy of the Liver is critical in dealing with stress and emotions. It helps to keep the immune system strong. The Liver Chi (qi) helps in processing the harder emotions, like anger, fear and anxiety. Unprocessed, these emotions are believed to express themselves in other, more harmful ways.

Herbs, teas and supplements for the liver chi can be a fantastic way of supporting your health needs. What if you don’t like drinking tea or taking herbs/supplements? Doing what is called a “Moist-Heat Liver Pack” is a potent choice. You can even do this if you are drinking Liver teas or taking herbs for the liver.

3. Place the moist wash cloth over your liver area, then on top of that the Hot Water bottle, and then on top of that, a dry towel.

4. Leave it there for about 30 minutes. You can watch TV, read a book, or anything relaxing you enjoy doing.

5. Do this every night for a minimum of 30 nights.

I normally tell people to do this in the evening before going to bed as it makes most people drowsy. After about 3 to 7 days, you should notice that you are starting to have more energy, feel less stressed out, and that your bowel movements are “stinkier.” This is when you know it is really starting to work.

Take a Hot Water bottle and fill this with Hot Water (not too hot, not too warm, but what is comfortable for you, though keep in mind, it must stay warm for about 30 minutes – normally most people find that the temperature that they run their bath water at is good). Electric heat and rice packs do not provide the same effect from what I have seen.

Another easy thing you can do to help get you going in the morning is what we call in Colorpuncture, “The Zone of Force.” This point is great for lack of mental strength, lack of decision and emotional exhaustion. To apply this, simply take an orange colored light (non-laser) and apply it to the center of your palm, left hand first, then right hand for 20 to 30 seconds each. This can be done every morning.

Commit today to take a moment to keep yourself healthy and balanced for all the other commitments you have made.

To stay well this holiday season, take time to see your holistic health practitioner. Attend a yoga class or meditation circle. Get a massage.

Their creation and performance helps us to understand where we came from. As a bridge between past and future, they enable us to access, honor, and strengthen our own identity.

6. Remove us from the ordinary flow of life and place us in sacred space. It is out of the realm of ordinary space and time that rituals create their magic through the mysterious and mystical language of symbolic reenactment.

7. Help us access our authentic selves through their ability to carry us into deeper levels of consciousness. By engaging all of our senses through the use of ritual elements inherent in the ritual process, we are able to bypass the intellect in favor of our intuitive, instinctive knowing. 9. Give meaning to our journeys and a sense of purpose to our lives. While the ongoing creation and performance of rituals prepares us for the next stages of life, the successive and cumulative practice of rituals over time has the power to ultimately transform us.

10. That mark “rites of passage” — major transitional turning points — help us “connect the dots.” They help us find and define the patterns and cycles in our individual lives that might otherwise seem to be random happenings if viewed separately.

By creating and performing personally expressive rituals for ourselves, we move freely into our own spiritual lives, taking charge of marking and honoring the transitions, the special moments in our lives that we find significant, in the ways we deem meaningful.

Rituals are tools that give us the freedom to take responsibility for the direction and purpose of our lives. Our task is to seize and shape this freedom — consciously, deliberately and joyfully. a

How good is change…really?

E

very time I hear someone blatantly espousing the catch phrase “change is good,” I want to scream out, “It depends on what’s being changed, and then you have to consider all the ramifications!”

When spring finally arrives, we feel a surge of personal renewal from the rebirthing of our long-yearned-for plant life.

During the summer we’re glorified by the hues and scents of our blooming flowers; the birds, bees, butterflies and other insects they attract; and our lush trees. For many of us, just working with the soil is inherently pleasing. And in the autumn we marvel at the kaleidoscope of colors, while the crunching of leaves under our feet lends us an inner peace. In essence, our souls, spirits and inner-energies depend on these gifts from nature.

Yet, everywhere we turn throughout the world, we’re rampantly developing our earth, yanking out countless trees and flowers — the source of that seasonal rejuvenation, and even more important, what we rely on to emit our precious oxygen.

We’re also changing and destroying the vital habitat and ecosystems that our trees, flowers, birds, bees, butterflies and other insects, besides countless wildlife, depend on for their food and shelter — their very existence. Then we’re burying the soil under slabs of cement to make it easier for us to walk or park our vehicles, and erecting dead buildings. In turn, our waters are getting filled with the debris we’ve generated while doing so.

To escape from that sterile environment, we flock to cabins to see less common

birds, butterflies and flowers. But once there, we chop down the dead trees that cavity-living birds depend on, and clear away the country denizens’ life-sustaining fallen logs. We mow our grass all the way down to the water’s edge, destroying the birds’ and ducks’ mating grounds, shelter and needed rest areas during their migration. In essence, we’re destroying the vital habitat and ecosystems for everything we came there to see.

I live in the city, and I’ve filled my front yard with a myriad of native plants that attract butterflies, bees and birds. In back, besides more flowers, I’ve hung up a myriad of feeders to attract countless types of birds, and they do come—even the rare ones, during their migration. I sit on our front porch or gaze out the kitchen window and watch nature’s show unfold. Other times I tiptoe through woodlands, listening to the living earth beneath my feet, and the tiniest sounds of life above.

If all this disappeared, would my heart ever sing again? Would yours? I’ve also hung crystals on my windows, so on sunny days I can rejoice in the swatches of rainbows they cast on our walls. Yet, I doubt if that would suffice.

Is it any wonder why I cringe every time I hear those words, “change is good?” Sure, change is inevitable. But good? In this case, not only us but a lot of life forms had better be able to adapt. a Darlene Levenson is a former newspaper reporter. 10 tips for the new kid at the local spiritual center

ou stand in the doorway of a strange building, surrounded by unfamiliar sights, sounds and smells. You wonder what to do, what to say, what questions to ask and how to get to know the people inside. Perhaps those people dress strangely or use unrecognizable words.

This scenario gets acted out daily at spiritual and meditation centers around the world. This article is for people who are contemplating such an encounter. It covers what questions to ask, what etiquette to

follow, what to look for, what to avoid, what to keep in mind and when to turn around and leave.

1. Call before you visit. The center’s hours may be unusual or irregular, or it may be staffed only at certain times.

2. Don’t be afraid or intimidated. A visit to a meditation or spiritual center may be surprising, disappointing, exhilarating, enlightening or disillusioning — but one thing it will almost never be is dangerous.

Of course, when you first visit a center or group, everyone but you will know what to New Kid continued on page 25 

 New Kid continued from page 24 do, what to say, how to act, and what is going on in general. The best thing you can do is be straightforward. Say, “I’m new here and need some guidance.” Most folks will help you.

3. Be honest and straightforward. Speak and act as you regularly do, unless you are asked to do otherwise.

4. Dress in loose, comfortable clothing.

This will help make any spiritual practice (meditation, stretching, etc.) as easy and comfortable as possible.

5. Observe the organization’s etiquette.

You may be asked to remove your shoes, observe silence for a short period, or perform a few formal bows. Feel free to ask later about the purpose or proper form of any practice or ritual. If you are asked to do something you have genuine ethical or religious objections to, don’t do it; simply stand or sit quietly until the ritual is complete. And if you’re asked to do something clearly inappropriate, such as sleep with the resident teacher, politely refuse and quickly leave.

6. At the appropriate time (usually at the end of your visit), ask any questions you like. Feel free to ask both questions (“What are these cushions for?”) and spiritual ones (“How does this practice relate to the Golden Rule?”). If you don’t understand an answer, ask for clarification.

7. Request practical information and details if you like. Ask for a tour of the center, for a copy of its schedule of activities, for a web address, and for any free brochures

or pamphlets. These may not be offered automatically.

8. If you’d like instruction in the group’s spiritual practices, don’t be shy about asking for it. You may be offered this instruction on the spot. More likely, you’ll be asked to come back at another time, typically for an introductory workshop or session. This will normally be brief (an hour or two) and either free or inexpensive (typically $30 or less); if it’s more than half a day and/or $50, be skeptical.

9. Be wary of requests for money. Spiritual centers have bills to pay like everyone else, so you may be asked for a donation or a pledge.

But it’s fine to say “not today” or “let me think on it and decide later.”

10. Always feel free to leave. No one can keep you there if you don’t want to stay — and it’s very unlikely that anyone will try. When you want or need to go, simply say goodbye and leave. No justifications or explanations are necessary.

If you like what you experience, come back to test the waters some more. If you don’t, try another center. No two spiritual groups or centers are alike, even those in the same tradition.
