Practical Wishcraft “Few people have the imagination for reality.” — Goethe

BY JED McKENNA THE LAST TIME I LOOKED — probably in 2004 when What the Bleep Do We Know!? came out — there was a lot of interest in manifestation by a variety of names: law of attraction, power of prayer, creative visualization, positive thinking, mind over matter, affirmations, wishcraft, and so on. I don’t know if manifestation is still a hot topic, but why shouldn’t it be? It’s a power that you actually possess, magic that you can actually do. How cool is that? The same way you can physically grow and heal without really knowing or doing anything, you can shape events and participate in the creation of your reality without really knowing or doing anything. You do have a role to play in the process, but it’s mostly just getting out of the way and not screwing it up. Your mileage may vary, but in my experience of adult-level manifestation, THE EDGE MAGAZINE 763.433.9291 P.O. Box 664, Anoka, MN 55303 www.edgemagazine.net PUBLISHERS TIM MIEJAN & CATHY JACOBSEN

there’s really no doing involved. When you authentically need or desire something, the process of manifestation is natural and organic; no effort or procedure or technique is required. You don’t have to know or learn or perform anything, you just have to bring a desire into focus and let it go. I suspect that human children like to use manifestation to conjure inauthentic desires which, though it kinda-sorta-maybe works, requires a bit more finagling and jumping through hoops. In other words, adult and juvenile manifestation are two related but dissimilar processes. I’m sure some people are very good at manifesting and that it can work very well even in the juvenile state, I’m just sharing my experience of the adult version, which is closely related to…

EFFORTLESS DOING I know about manifestation because I do it. All the time. Without even trying. As a well-developed human adult wellestablished in the integrated state, effort-

less-doing is my normal mode of operation. As the name implies, I don’t make any effort in this regard. I simply live in alignment with the subtle energetic currents of my being and all this manifestation stuff just takes care of itself. I don’t have to perform any techniques or plead my case or tape messages to my bathroom mirror, I just maintain my state of energetic alignment and my co-creative dreamstate does the rest. Of course, if I go out of alignment with my authentic nature and try to manifest something inauthentic like a Jet-Ski or a giraffe, I will be disappointed, but why on earth would I go out of alignment with my authentic nature? Once one comes into alignment, misalignment becomes, literally, unthinkable. I don’t really have wants, per se. That might be an important thing to mention. The few examples I provide below are sort of environmental and mechanical in a way that certainly pleases me, but it’s not like I want to go to prom or close the big deal or go to Aspen for a week or tamper with the natural order of things. All I really want is to perform my function, and for that to happen I can’t get bogged down in all the minutiae of a somewhat challenging living environment. This world, this body and this character are not me or the point of me, they’re just a platform on which my function can be performed. Things in my environment have to do their job or be replaced, and I don’t want to get bogged down in a lot of getting and spending busywork. Co-creative manifestation spares me that. If I find that I can’t live without the latest squeegee or the hot new color of M&M, then I just go downhill, hand over some money and manifest the old-fashioned way.

A CASUAL ASIDE… Any even moderately aware person must see this co-creative dynamic at work in their own life in a way that doesn’t lend itself to clinical, testable, reproducible results, but which is nevertheless as undeniably real as anything else in the dreamstate. What this means to those who acknowledge it is that the objective mechanical worldview is falsified and replaced by the subjective idealistic worldview. Just that easily, you can defrock all scientific pretenders and

reclaim authority over your own dreamstate experience. Let the science children keep playing in their sandbox, but don’t let them convince you they have any answers. Not a single one.

POOR OL’ TRUCK Just as one recent and visible example of manifestation, a tree fell on my good old pickup truck and killed it, so I had to claim the insurance and get a better, more appropriate, even older truck. I was aware that I had to make a change regarding my truck soon; the need was kind of closing in on me and I was kind of ignoring it. It was getting close to becoming a real issue when my better half — the co-creative universe — took care of things with a bang and a crunch. Events were set in motion and two weeks later I had a much better truck just in time to meet a pressing need. Another example involves that same truck. A year earlier, a woman backed into the truck causing minor frame and cosmetic damage to the right rear. It was her fault and she was very sorry, but I wasn’t upset; I know how these things work. The check from her insurance company came within 20 bucks of the exact amount I needed to have a new wood stove delivered and installed. This was a stove I had already picked out after hours of pleasant research. Winter was getting

close, but I had forgotten about the stove and my attention was elsewhere. Now, as if by magic, presto! — there it sits, a few feet away from me, keeping me toasty and snug. I would have been happy to pay cash for both stove and truck, but the universe doesn’t seem to care who pays, it’s more results-oriented. It does seem to have a thing against insurance companies, so that’s nice. On the other hand, it didn’t cover replacement of my Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Grateful Dead CDs, so nothing’s perfect. These are hi-vis, several-a-year examples, but they come in all sizes from the mega few-in-a-lifetime size to the easily overlooked many-times-a-day ones and everything in between, plus all the subtle stuff we fail to notice. Then there are the navigational ones that don’t really manifest anything more than a sense of where things are going. This is how I knew in Warfare, while in the first split-second of a 70 mph motorcycle accident, that it wouldn’t be fun but it wouldn’t be serious. This is how I always know where things are going and, often more importantly, where they’re not going. I’m not some big wishcraft expert. I’m just describing my own experience of the integrated state. The above examples of getting money for new stuff in a timely

manner are fairly vanilla compared to the fancy stuff. The point is not that these truck examples are so special but that they’re not. They were practically routine, like growth and healing, like the autonomic system that never lets your heart skip a beat or like the mechanism of balance. This is how my life does work and how everyone’s life can work, most notably, yours.

SET IT AND FORGET IT Once a mentally clear and emotionally empowered idea has been formed, my part is done and I let it go. A virtual request has been made and I trust that the best will occur. I spent a pleasant hour every day for a few weeks coming up with the right woodstove solution, brought the matter into clear focus, then forgot all about it. This isn’t like a new dishwasher or garbage disposal for me (I don’t have either). A woodstove is the heart of my cabin and closely tied to my own comfort and happiness. Once rightness regarding a woodstove came into focus for me, I was done with it. I don’t have to carry photos of trucks and woodstoves in my wallet or post them on my fridge. Once I set the desire and set it free, my part in the process is done. Manifestation is going on all the time, just like physical healing and growth are going on all the time. being more harmoniously aligned with their environment than segregated juveniles, tend to manifest more smoothly and effortlessly, especially where it involves the exploration and expression of their unique spiritual DNA, but this stuff works for everyone to whatever degree they don’t tie it up in an emotional web of egoic entanglement. Manifestation is not something you have to perform like a magical incantation. It’s your essential nature as a creative being in a co-creative dreamstate. You can shape reality and alter events and make stuff appear because that’s getting to the heart of who, what and where you really are.

2020: Una Sacudida BY

CAROLYN CHILTON CASAS

I want someone to explain to me what’s up with this year; a lot of crazy stuff is going on – a global pandemic, protests, antagonistic politics. California on fire, front page news two days ago – our county had the worst air quality in the world. We have lost family members – in May, July, and August. Today the nuclear plant siren pierced our hills and I think, what now? This one…only a test. There is a word in Spanish that comes to mind – una sacudida – a shaking up: like a tremor so strong it is felt four hundred miles from its origin, the shock of being bitten by a snake, or receiving a jolt by putting your finger in an electric socket. This year feels like that; it seems as if something – Mother Earth? the universe? God? wants our attention… and is going to get it. a CAROLYN CHILTON CASAS is a Reiki Master Teacher and a student of metaphysics. A PRAYER FOR THE LIVING We think of prayer as an inferior entity asking a superior entity for special dispensation. We plead, make promises, strike bargains, wheedle and cajole like children nagging Big Daddy for some toy or prize or reprieve, but there is no child/parent dynamic in manifestation. We may also think that prayer has something to do with worthiness or merit, but this too is part of the eyes-closed, fear-based, child/ parent mindset. It’s your dreamstate. You can have whatever you can want — the trick is right-wanting in alignment with your unique energetic pattern which, for anyone established in the integrated state, is no trick at all. This process of manifestation scales up and down to all levels. Sometimes it results in wondrous life changes or acts of creative intelligence, sometimes it’s as mundane as finding your keys or getting a good parking spot. Once you enter into this energetic flow, it becomes integrated into your life experience and is only conspicuous by its occasional absence, like when all the stoplights are against you. Yeah, shit happens. Wah. BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR By waking up and coming into alignment with the underlying structural pattern of your dreamstate reality — your spiritual DNA, rather than the DNA of the herdbeast organism — thought, desire and manifestation merge into a single, organic, effortless process so that, without knowing the first thing about Taoism, you become a living master of it, i.e., a well-developed human adult well-established in the integrated state. Herd-shuffling is over and we learn to stand and walk and run — and maybe more — on our own. Rightknowing, right-action and effortless-doing become the new normal once the artificial barrier of the juvenile shell has been dissolved and one has developed into a

functional adulthood. It’s through mind and heart working together like film and light source that your authentic desires are projected onto the screen of your dreamstate reality. There’s a bit more to it, of course. For instance, you shouldn’t wish for a negative. If you pray that it’s not cancer, you’re empowering the cancer part, not the not part. Similarly, though I haven’t tested this, I suspect that if you wish ill toward another, you’re effectively summoning it into your own environment. Also, you have to walk the talk; if you pray for perfect health and keep subjecting yourself to hyper-toxicity, you’re just uttering fearful words outweighed by opposing actions. A word to the wise: don’t get locked into a specific outcome. Trust your co-creative counterpart to come up with the best result. That’s what the release part looks like.

SURRENDER VS ABDICATION The point of a caterpillar is to dissolve into the chrysalis stage, and the point of the chrysalis is the birth of the butterfly. The caterpillar is a birth stage and the chrysalis is a transition stage, but the butterfly is what it’s all about. The caterpillar doesn’t need to learn to fly. It just needs to follow its natural course, undergo its natural transition, and flight comes naturally. Similarly, children don’t need to act like adults. They just need to follow their natural course, undergo their natural transition, and emerge into the adulthood for which they were born. The key, as always, is surrender. You can release the steering wheel and press the gas and trust in something larger than yourself — it doesn’t matter what — or you can cling to the illusion of control and keep reading about the life you could be living. Behind the appearance of the timespace energymatter universe is the truth of infinite consciousness and perfect intelligence. Brahman is mind, dreamstate is mind and you are mind. There is only mind, and that thou art. Emotional detachment from ego is the key to everything, and that entails a death-rebirth process which, if I were you, I would be praying, manifesting, attracting and affirming my ass off to achieve. In my opinion, the only worthwhile purpose of manifestation in the juvenile state is transition to the adult state. To manifest your authentic desires, you must first transition to your authentic self. All else follows from that. a JED McKENNA is the author of the Enlightenment, Dreamstate, and Jed Talks trilogies. Find free ebook, articles, spiritual quotations gallery and more at www. Religion & the One Truth BY SELF-REALIZATION FELLOWSHIP An excerpt from The Science of Religion

THIS YEAR MARKS THE 100th anniversary of the arrival in the West of Paramahansa Yogananda, who set foot on American soil on September 19, 1920, after sailing into Boston Harbor aboard The City of Sparta from his native India. He had been invited to America as the Indian delegate to an International Congress of Religious Liberals convening in Boston. Since his arrival in America exactly 100 years ago, Yogananda has come to be regarded as the father of Yoga in the West, introducing millions to the timeless science of yoga meditation through his bestselling spiritual classic, Autobiography of a Yogi, and his many other works. As part of the anniversary commemoration of this historic occasion, SelfRealization Fellowship, the society he founded the same year as his arrival in the West, has released a special centennial edition of Paramahansa Yogananda’s The Science of Religion, an amplification of his maiden speech in America delivered to the Congress delegates on October 6, 1920. This seminal book includes a detailed discussion of the scientific basis of yoga, and underscores the universality of the

world’s religions and explains why the answers to the ultimate questions of life lie in the direct personal experience of a Higher Reality. This newly released edition also includes a new foreword with additional historical detail about Yogananda’s arrival in America and the 1920 Congress of Religious Liberals in Boston. Here is some wisdom from this book: I have tried to show in this book that as God is one, necessary to all of us, so religion is one, necessary and universal. Only the roads to it may differ…. It is illogical to say that there are two religions, when there is but one God. Religion necessarily consists in the permanent removal of pain and the realization of Bliss, or God. And the actions that we must adopt for the permanent avoidance of pain and the realization of Bliss or God are called religious. Religion is really nothing but the merging of our individuality in universality. Therefore in the consciousness of this blissful state, we ascend the steps of religion. We leave the noxious atmosphere of

the senses and vagrant thoughts and come to a region of heavenly Bliss. In the teachings of all religions, whether it be Christianity, Mohammedanism or Hinduism, one truth is stressed: Until man knows himself as Spirit — the fountainhead of Bliss — he is limited by mortal concepts and subject to the inexorable laws of nature. Knowledge of his true being brings him eternal freedom. Savants of different ages and climes have suggested methods adapted to the mental frame and condition of the people among whom they lived and preached. Some have laid stress on prayer, some on feeling, some on good works, some on love, some on reason or thought, some on meditation. But their motives have been the same. They all meant that body consciousness should be transcended by the turning back of the life‑force inward, and that the Self should be realized, as the image of the sun appears in calm, unruffled water. Now, being blessed and reflected spiritual Selves, why is it that we are utterly unmindful of our blissful state and are instead subject to physical and mental pain and suffering? The answer is that the ➤ see TRUTH on p. 8

spiritual Self has brought on itself this present state (by whatever process it may be) by identifying itself with a transitory bodily vehicle and a restless mind. The spiritual Self, being thus identified, feels itself sorry for or delighted at a corresponding unhealthy and unpleasant or healthy and pleasant state of the body and mind. Because of this identification, the spiritual Self is being continually disturbed by their transitory states. When I say that to attain Bliss is the universal end of religion, I do not mean by Bliss what is usually called pleasure, or that intellectual satisfaction which arises from the fulfillment of desire and want and which is mixed with an excitation, as when we say we are pleasurably excited. In Bliss there is no excitement, nor is it a contrast consciousness: “My pain or want has been removed by the presence of such and such objects.” It is a consciousness of perfect tranquillity — a consciousness of our calm nature unpolluted by the intruding consciousness that pain is no more. What does Universal Religion say about God? It says that the proof of the existence of God lies in ourselves. It is an inner experience. You can surely recall at least one moment in your life when, in prayer or worship, you felt that the trammels of your body had nearly vanished, that the duality of experience — pleasure and pain, petty love and hate, and so on — had receded from your mind. Pure Bliss and tranquillity had welled up in your heart and you enjoyed an unruffled calm — Bliss and contentment. Though this kind of higher experience does not often come to all, yet there can be no doubt that all men, at some time or other, in prayer or in a mood of worship or meditation, have enjoyed a few moments of unalloyed peace. The spirit of inquiry is in all. Everyone in the world is a seeker after truth. It is his immortal heritage; and he seeks it, blindly or wisely, until he has fully reclaimed it. It is never too late to mend. “Seek, and ye shall find; knock and it shall be opened unto you.” (Mathew 7:7) a SELF-REALIZATION FELLOWSHIP (SRF) has been dedicated to disseminating the Kriya Yoga teachings of its founder, Paramahansa Yogananda, for 100 years — helping people worldwide to realize their highest potential and deepest joy. Today, SRF (together with Yogoda Satsanga Society, the name by which Yogananda’s work is known in India) has more than 800 locations encircling the globe, with members in almost 200 countries. October Horoscope

Seek Balance Mercurial Messages through the Zodiac BY HEATHER ROAN ROBBINS OCTOBER BRINGS A MONTH of fair days and deep turmoil, and lovely minutes in the sunshine, during some truly Machiavellian moves in the big picture. It’s our task to see the world’s problems and love anyway — to love, have compassion, and yet hold people accountable. Enabling is not love, whether we do it with our child, ourselves, a friend or our politicians. The energy swirls, shifts and confronts as Pluto leaves retrograde and turns direct on October 4, Mercury opposes Uranus October 7, and Mars squares Pluto October 9. We need to use our will for the best of all sentient beings. Enjoy easier aspects and interpersonal opportunity October 8-12. Stay balanced and aware October 13-18 while Mercury retrogrades and the sun forms a tricky T-square with Mars, Pluto and Saturn; look for truth and stay calm in the swirling winds. In the changes, look for opportunities to move the ball forward. Practice balance and poise to prevent accidents. Stay calm and poised and sort out facts from fiction. Complete work from the past. The sun enters Scorpio October 22 and Venus trines Saturn, helping to steady our mood and assist us in thinking critically, but kindly. Mercury and Venus both enter Libra on October 27 and call for fairness, honesty and social justice.

Let’s keep our eyes on the prize of a healthier, more conscious world. Aries (Mar. 21-Apr. 19)…Be the instigator, but just be careful what you instigate. Your dynamic, innovative ideas at work are probably right on, but be patient about the process of bringing others along with you. Practice patience and awareness October 9. Compete with your personal best and not against others October 18. Taurus (Apr. 20-May 20)…Old problems can rankle you, but it’s important to be direct about your anger, not passive-aggressive. Own your feelings but work towards future change, not past retribution. Express your perspective around October 12, and dive into the depths October 21. Gemini (May 21-June 20)…Sometimes it is your job to ask the provocative question, but it’s so easy to tick people off. Keep your heart connected to your mouth and think through the consequences of your comments. Be kind to yourself around October 13, and step forward as Mercury reenters Libra October 27. Cancer (June 21-July 22)…You can be a leader this month, but lead the way you would like to be led, with kindness and respect for others, rather than by trying to prove yourself. The people around you are going through so much and need your firm, nurturing hand on the tiller.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)…You’ve been on a steep learning curve lately, so now use what you’ve learned. Support your health, and learn to practice good self-care no matter how exciting or boring life becomes. Enter an open door around October 11, stand strong but not stubborn October 15-19, and engage conversation in late October. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)…Venus enters Virgo October 2; be lovely, see beauty. When your nerves act up, look for what is worthy, balanced, fair and beautiful. It may be hard to find mid-month, but you can do it. Reconnect with the past rather than push forward as Mercury retrogrades. Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)… People may start fires, but it’s not always your job to put them out; some only learned through the consequences of their actions. Do take care of yourself, those affected, and reward people for positive, dynamic behavior. Take time within mid-October and reengage after October 21. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)…Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean you’re not right. Laugh at your suspicious nature, but do look under rocks, investigate behind-the-scenes, and look for real motivations. You’ll either be pleasantly surprised or fully prepared. Don’t jump to conclusions mid-October; move and think with care. Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)… Tend to your resources; watch that beloveds don’t ask you to spend money in ways that feel unsafe. Show love other ways. Keep your priorities clear. Make

it a game to move with as much grace and safety as possible, particularly October 9-19. Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan.19)… Conflicts may abound around you, but you don’t have to engage; stay empowered, on target, and don’t take the bait. Turn some of your restlessness into step-by-step life improvement rather than engaging in fights. Be mature, authoritative, but not controlling mid-month, and feel appreciation for your work after October 23. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)… While others are busy, deal with what’s going on behindthe-scenes or deep within your psyche. Mine the past for gold: remember what’s worthy, but don’t get stuck there. Keep your eyes on your goals. Juggle changes early October, practice steadiness mid-month, and engage creativity October 24 on. Pisces (Feb. 19-Mar. 20)…Your natural empathy feels the woes of the world deeply; social justice issues are strong for you. Stay out of blame, guilt or defense, and ask what needs to be done next. Dive in to that work, but do so with safety and self-care. Share visions around October 12. a HEATHER ROAN ROBBINS is a heart-centered and choice-oriented astrologer, palmist and ceremonialist with 30+ years’ experience. God Consciousness & the One A Pleiadian Message BY CHRISTINE DAY BELOVED ONES, WE GREET YOU. We fulfill our promise at this sacred time on your planet by holding an energetic mantle for all humanity. This mantle contains the full blueprint hologram of the transitional energies that ultimately will shift the consciousness for all on your planet. This vibrational flow from the mantle has just recently become activated through the sacred destiny timing set in place by the God Seat of Power. This holy presence oversees and monitors our resident Universe and is transmitting a steady light for the awakening of Earth. Part of Earth’s destiny is for you as humans to play a unique and imperative role within the Universe. As a planet, you are working with a destined timing, in that you are set to return to live within the sacred communion center of God consciousness. The light of God consciousness is the central living force that emanates, like a heartbeat, within our Universe. This God consciousness state is an essential component within all living things within our Universe. This sacred component allows us to operate as a united One. As Earth navigates through this transitional phase, we, and all life force groups that exist in this Universe, are given a higher access of communion, to move into the final stage of becoming a completed Universe. Earth is making its final transition back to the God consciousness state of communion, returning Home. This returning reopens a multidimensional transmutation state of fulfillment and a completion of this phase of awakening for the planet. A network grid of God light has been anchored within your Earth plane to move you, reposition you dimensionally, to activate this next step transition. This is an unparalleled moment for your planet’s consciousness.

can be detected by the naked eye. You are now being empowered through this changing frequency to have access to higher components of Self within your heart structure. Another dimensional aspect of your sacred heart is opening within you, revealing a deeper and more complete sense of your own multidimensional nature. Your physical heart and energetic field are unfolding through this changing frequency as they begin to embody a higher light, reflecting a more compete Truth. Your heart holds the key for you to enter through the reflections of these changing vibrational doorways within the Earth plane. Vast internal changes are taking place within your physical systems as a result of these expanding vibrations that are emanating the essence of the network grid outwards. These expanding frequencies are enlivening your systems further.

METAMORPHIC SHIFT Earth continues to undergo a complete metamorphic shift through the activity from the network grid. The grid through its expansion creates an electrical frequency of light vibration throughout the Earth, creating an entire shift within the energetic environment of the planet. Many of these specific energetic shifts are being reflected within your sky. Look and open into the multidimensional doorways that are re-emerging. They can be witnessed within the cloud forms as they are highlighted by the sun’s rays. They are reflected differently within the night sky, forming vibrational signatures of light that

VIBRATIONAL OPENINGS Your brain synapses, DNA strands and the entire skeletal system are undergoing powerful vibrational openings. Aspects of your God consciousness light are held within the bone. The change in the frequency of the arising light within your bone are allowing you to more easily navigate through the multidimensional aspects of your heart. An entirely new arena is being revealed within your sacred heart, giving you access to the understanding and clarity of your path. Knowledge and knowing are part of your natural sacred makeup. You are in the middle of a state of change. This is an active metamorphosis as

your heart chamber is being reconfigured to connect once more to the multidimensional realities. You are being made ready to accommodate Higher Realm vibrational components of the sacred spirit re-entering and fully anchoring through your physical form. Great changes are coming into your life. These shifting experiences will allow you to operate from a very different energetic platform and perspective of Truth. These openings of consciousness have never before been experienced on this Earth plane in this lifetime. You will be carrying a frequency change within your entire physical and energetic systems, which will link you into a whole, and completely new, reality setting.

SHIFTING REALITY Those of you on the path are being held and supported to enable you to meet and realign into these shifting reality states that co-exist simultaneously with the illusion of the third dimension. The veils are lifting, revealing to you an authentic reality within yourself. Only through a conscious choice to connect through your heart center can you fully align and utilize the full reality of Truth. This is a critical time for you to activate the pre-agreements that were made by you before you came into this incarnation. This is the time to call forth your individual support team to assist you. To successfully navigate this phase of re-entry, you will require support. Your family of light is here waiting for the call from you. Remember, you have free will and they cannot interfere in your process without your permission. These sacred alliances are specifically here to assist you in navigating yourself Home. Your re-entry to the Higher Realms requires an integration process to fully open into the next phase of your individual evolution. Your family of light carries the living frequency, an imprint of the design, for you. Your family of light casts a specific frequency of the heritage light around you — for you to assimilate and return within this imprint design. The anchoring of your family imprint is re-established through your heart. The network grid’s role is to act as a transmitter, reflecting to you the vibration of your own unique God light signature. Your heart opens in response to the design of the familiar pattern that it remembers. Your heart’s role is to lead you into this “remembering.” You are to follow the guidance from your heart, as it remembers the sacred terrain carried by the imprint.

DEEP INSIGHTS There are many diverse reality settings in which you are going to be able to gain deep insights to knowing, knowledge and remembering. As you realign with your multidimensional Higher Realm self through this imprint, you re-access your gifts and ability to navigate your way back into the universal God consciousness state. Components of your self have been awaiting this reconnection. This time in destiny allows you to realign back to Truth, which has always been in existence beyond the illusion. This entire process right now requires you to consciously let go, even if you are unaware of what it is you are letting go. Moment by moment, utilize the conscious breath and let go. You play an essential role at this juncture by consciously letting go. The “letting go” frequency impacts and shifts the reality base within the Earth. It is designed to support the motion of changing the set vibration of “holding on” to the illusion of fear. As you consciously let go, you set in motion the allowance of a higher reality to re-anchor within the planet. By letting go, you are consciously choosing to be re-orientated to this changing vibrational landscape of light within your systems. You are choosing to realign to a higher consciousness and to a more complete aspect of Truth. This Truth is destined to unfold within you first and then to flow naturally throughout your environment of Earth. The process of letting go links you into the higher multidimensional realities within your heart. YOUR OWN LIGHT You are being remade through your own light as you let go. You are being realigned into the sacred patterns of your light through your heart. As you let go, you are being re-established within your own multidimensional heart. As you choose to let go, an automatic reset begins to open through you, within your heart. The conscious breath is the key to allowing these changes within you.

Remember, the action is taking a deep breath in through the mouth and then exhaling out through the mouth. This conscious breath is designed to set your destiny in motion through the action of letting go. Your heart cells play a role as receptors in this process. Your heart’s cells are being transformed to engage with the pineal and the telepathic communion center in the brain. Your heart cells have an unlimited capacity to participate on a higher multidimensional level. The heart energetically is a multidimensional tool designed to accommodate the unlimited capacity and potential of your higher realm vibrational light. Your brain cells carry a destined frequency link for this happening to be opened within you. This automatic shift is a natural event of reconnection and has been pre-programmed through your physical and energetic systems to be set in motion now. The conscious letting go element will activate this timing mechanism within your brain. All aspects of this entire transmutation have been pre-planned and will be self-realized successfully. Your brain frequency will undergo a full transformation as the brain cells begin to align and interact with the pineal. These reconnections will set in motion a repositioning within your DNA strands. These energetic shifts within your body systems will activate a higher flow of your light frequency to engage within each body system, recreating your unique multidimensional signature pulse. These shifts signal and realign you to your natural multidimensional abilities.

SACRED FLOWS Your unique light vibrations flow into you like waves. These sacred flows that are birthing arise like an ocean. These higher light frequencies are designed to perfectly align within your physical systems. The light, your light, is designed to transform the energetic arena within your body. By letting go, moment by moment, you will set

in motion this metamorphic phase. There is a powerful resurgence of light coming, and it will create another revolutionary level of upheaval within the environment of the Earth plane. You are required to prepare your physical systems and relink to your heart to strengthen your Higher Realm connections. This changing dynamic within you is essential for your overall preparation of what is about to occur on your Earth. The cellular shifts are able to take place through your systems by you consciously letting go — being willing to allow change and opening your awareness consciously to embrace the coming changes. You play an essential role at this juncture by consciously letting go. The frequency of letting go shifts the reality base within the Earth, which in turn supports the motion of the changing vibration that is about to accelerate. By consciously letting go, you set in motion an allowing of a higher reality to reanchor within the planet. This entire unfolding of Earth has always been about you, as a human being, consciously participating, setting in motion a change in the energetic profile of Earth. You hold the power within your heart. Collectively, each individual profile of energetic light flows together in a perfect synergy. This is the process of unfolding: human hearts flowing together in a sacred communion to become the action creators of change for Earth. We witness you and work in conjunction with you by stabilizing the frequency of the grids during the unfolding of the planet. Coronavirus, Getting to Know It “I view the Earth as a big organism that breathes in and out eternally.” — Johann Goethe BY

JAROSLAV VLCEK

CORONAVIRUS ATTACKS HUMANS. What is its purpose? I will start the search by reading a passage about the Earth from my book Tracking Consciousness Before Birth and Beyond (Friesen Press 2017), a quotation of the prenatal child: “Above me a luminous tree spreads wide its crown. It speaks to me. As I gaze into its winding veins, small particles thread toward me. One speck enters me, seeking a place to settle down. I will give it a home, life within me. Another arrives. Each particle I adopt connects me with its source lastingly. Bit by bit the living Earth feeds me Her matter. Now I cannot turn from Her without breaking the bond and feeling the pain of separation. Forever I am bound to Earth, my true Mother. To Earth I owe my substance.” Explanation: The prenatal child is “gazing at” (being conscious of) the placenta and describes its experience of building its body with the particles of the earth matter that enter it. It listens to their stories and gives home to those it likes. We learn that the Earth is indeed a living organism and our true Mother. This proves that Earth is alive and we are her children. More about the Earth: The Earth has an eternal bond with the sun that goes back to the beginning of the solar system. Both were part of a cloud of star dust and gases that gave rise to it. Also, all the life forms on the Earth — including the coronavirus — are united by the same energy of life. Thus, the human being, the Earth and the coronavirus, each can say, “I am.”

ROLE OF HUMANS IN NATURE Every life form on the Earth occupies a rung on the evolutionary ladder. Humans are given the highest rung. It determines their role in nature as benevolent leaders of all the lower life. Thus, humans carry the aspirations of the lower life to better its life condition and progress in evolution. The coronavirus feeds on the lungs of human beings as a predator, aspiring to become human, just as plants aspire to become animals by offering themselves as food to animals. Animals feed on vegetation that is palatable to them. Life gravitates to what is familiar according to its design. Nature is full of wandering life, each looking for its home. “It is the central urge of every atom…To return to its divine source, however distant….” — Walt Whitman, “Persian Lesson” from Leaves of Grass The position of the leader among the life forms is determined during its first light-matter interaction, which takes place in the realm of elementary particles discussed below. I will illustrate it with an example of a flock of hungry farmyard chickens that catches the attention of the unborn child who wants to help quiet the unruly flock. From my poem “Hungry Birds”: “The birds shriek, fight, demand. I want to quiet the angry flock. My wish spins a dream, carries me into a deep past, an eternal realm where everything follows an exact law, the world of elementary particles, where I had my beginning. There I see myself being assembled: a glittering, rare precious matter, my first substance…. Invisible elementals inhabit this subtle world. They helped create me. They also know the birds. I appeal to them: Can you help the birds? …They reply: tell the one who harbors you to feed them.” I send a message to Mati who feeds them. They quiet. In a while I, too, sense receiving food.” The story illustrates the role of the unborn child as a benevolent leader of chickens. More importantly, it shows its origin in the realm of elementary particles such as atoms, electrons, photons, 1 2  WWW.EDGEMAGAZINE.NET

protons and neutrons. In this realm, every new life form is given its first matter and its purpose in life by the divine creation Source — its home. Without a purpose, a life has no meaning.

CURRENT STATE OF LIFE ON EARTH On the whole, the life on Earth today is not what it was designed to be. It all started in the West with the arrival of the industrial revolution and technology. Humans lost the awareness of Earth as a living organism and their true Mother: Mother Earth. At first, people used it as a means of their survival, but later also for selfish interests driven by greed. This led to a life of material realism. Matter has been regarded as the fundamental reality and everything else was believed to be derived from it. Today, material realism has been proven to be an ignorant way of understanding life. It is being replaced by consciousness-based experience of life by the participant. According to Albert Einstein, “All knowledge of reality begins and ends with experience.” “God always forgives, we forgive sometimes, but nature never forgives.” — Spanish folk wisdom The last part of the proverb explains the current racial struggle. The negative effect of material realism has led to environmental pollution, resource exploitation and general damage to the Earth by its inhabitants. People are part of the Earth. They are abusing and damaging Earth, not realizing that they are directing the abuse and damage toward themselves — amazing ignorance! Examples: holocaust, slavery, oppression of the indigenous people, racial and religious discrimination… the list goes on and on. It is painful to hear about wars killing innocent people or hurting them economically by imposing sanctions, aimed to force their leaders to submit to the will of the aggressor. I intend to show that the damage of Earth is the root cause of the current viral pandemic. “Mother Earth has become a forgotten myth. The health and survival of the planet has been seriously damaged and compromised. These are indisputable facts! We have sinned against the Earth.” — Pope Francis, on Earth Day To survive, Earth has tried to defend herself. Seeing that humans would not voluntarily abandon their evil ways, Earth resorted to a drastic measure to lower their number by diseases and plagues. Humans were able to stop the epidemics in the past by quarantine, increasing immunity and by various remedies, but never could eliminate the root cause of the diseases: damage to Earth. The coronavirus is the latest serious pandemic. Its spreading function follows an exponential curve defined by Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler’s number e raised to a power whose magnitude expresses the “nature” of the virus. At the beginning the only thing we know about its nature and influence is the geometry of its spreading. Thus, by restricting free movement of people and keeping the infected in huge hospitals, we can decrease the virus’s operating geography, flatten the exponential curve, and slow down the progress of its spreading. That will not lower its capacity to strike again. When we remove the movement restriction, keeping everything the same, we can expect the virus to resume its normal spreading. If at the same time we alter the “food” of the virus chemically, our modeling of its spreading becomes less reliable as the predictor of its future behavior. Still, if it accomplishes the slowing down of the virus spreading, it is the right thing to do, hoping at the same time that the virus will not mutate as it did by becoming COVID-19.

PEACEFUL CO-EXISTENCE WITH THE INVADER Fighting the virus — as we do now — and hoping that it will one day disappear may prove to be very difficult, too expensive, and miss its root cause and purpose. Alternatively, we may have to do what the life force had always done in the past: agree on a peaceful co-existence with the virus. There are thousands of bacteria and viruses that invaded our bodies and we found a way to live in symbiosis with them. The way to do it was shown to us. In discussing the origin of life forms we learned that it is the role of human beings to act as benevolent leaders of lower life to help improve their life conditions, and fulfill their ambition to advance in evolution. We have a good reason to believe that the coronavirus, aspiring to become human, would welcome our invitation for peaceful co-existence. The co-existence with the virus would require that humans stop damaging the Earth and restore its full awareness as Mother Earth. This would mean the permanent end of wars and diseases, thus returning life to its intended Divine design state: a paradise on Earth. In exchange, the human demands would be for the coronavirus to lower its virulence and limit the lung infection to a minor ailment, something like an ordinary cold. Humans must realize that in fighting the virus, they are facing the Divine design of its creation by the creation Source. If we know nothing about it, we would have to start at the bottom: being humble. Humbleness in spiritual circles is defined as the highest form of prayer. We find in the Bible (Matthew 5:5), “The meek shall inherit the Earth.” Discovering that less is more will completely eliminate the falsehoods of material realism such as capitalism. We can also learn from the colony of honey bees. Bees create a queen by feeding it a royal jelly, thus teaching it about the environment, and making it their leader and mother of all new bees. This could be the ideal way for humans to choose their leader, metaphorically speaking. To some, the above may seem like a utopia, while others may see it as the necessary first step to right the life on Earth. HEALING EARTH The coronavirus is a legitimate life form. To realize peaceful co-existence (symbiosis) would be a huge task, not accomplishable in one swoop. Nature moves in its own inimitable way, like planting a new tree. We have to wait until its roots establish themselves in the ground, its crown finds the sun and the tree begins to grow in the loving bond between those two and bear fruit. It would take time and care but the rewards would be huge: creation of paradise on Earth. Politically, the new tree of life would require new leadership and change of education. Here we could expect a heavy resistance from people with strong egos. The ego, as a survival force, has a great power and can lead to a very successful

career as a servant, or end up as egomania, an autocratic and dictatorial behavior as a tyrant. Unable to experience life, the egomaniac hallucinates. His only goal is to satisfy his ego…. There would also be a need to stop the runaway horse of technology and to eliminate the debilitating effect of advertising. These products of capitalism can be as harmful as an epidemic.

IN CONCLUSION From the study of the coronavirus we learned that: • Earth is a living organism, our true Mother, Mother Earth. • People have sinned against Earth, both physically and socially. • Earth has tried to defend Herself, bringing diseases and changing physically. • Humans learned to stop diseases without finding their cause and purpose. • Finding the fight with the virus impractical and expensive, they decided on peaceful coexistence with the virus. • Humans had to know the virus intimately, becoming aware of their natural true life. This awareness exists naturally in the prenatal and, for a short time, in the postnatal life of the infant. It can be felt also at the old age when the unimportant layers of the worldly life memory are peeled off. If none of these are available in our memory, we can practice being born again by spirit and water, as in the Bible (John 3:5). We have identified the damage to Earth by humans as the root cause of the origin of the virus and its purpose to kill humans as a stern warning. The current opening of coal mines in the USA, offshore drilling, fracking, etc., likely precipitated the appearance of the coronavirus. My last remark and comment: California physicist and Nobel laureate Richard Feynman gave four lectures in New Zealand titled The Strange Theory of Light and Matter. The lectures were later published by Princeton University Press as QED (Quantum Electro-Dynamics). I have similar memories about light as Feynman: “When I was a child I was fascinated by light. As an adult I was fascinated by consciousness and found that consciousness was light. As an old man (96 years from conception) I am fascinated by life creation. To me the Feynman’s lectures describe the genius physicist’s view of life creation, as a tool in the hand of the creation Source. I would have loved to ask him about it. It may not be too late now. a JAROSLAV “JERRY” VLCEK was born in a highland valley in Czechoslovakia and spent his childhood mostly walking alone and exploring the nature that surrounded him. School took away his direct knowledge of nature, but academic success catapulted him to a lifelong career as a research scientist and educator, culminating in a professorship at the University of Toronto, where he worked in the Departments of Applied Physics, Civil Engineering, and the Faculty of Forestry. He is now retired, and lives with his wife in West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. COPYRIGHT © 2020. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

The Cup MARIA ROBSON Can you drink my cup? He asks. What strange words, I answer. Where is it? I don’t drink blood, I scoff and turn to go BY

Wait, please, his hand light on my shoulder Sit a while, here by the stream. We sit, a sparrow chirps, throating droplets in the sunlight, bathes, twittering, undisturbed and unafraid I may have got the words wrong, his tone is apologetic. They put a halo on my head, you see, as well as thorns. We are a cup onto each other. (Still annoyed, I hate preaching, my eyes turn away) Clay, flesh, bone, blood, rage, fear, love, war, he persists. Not the silver cup of fiction, not the golden of cathedrals, not the jeweled relic in temples. No! My cup is baked earthen clay — terra cotta Yes, it overflows in beauty ecstatic, artists, mystics , shepherds, and your hairdresser know this. But mostly we drink to cool the mouth dry and dead. The despair and aftertaste we cleanse with clear water from the stream. Ah yes, the dregs (he read my heart) No mere few grains of deposit at the bottom, are they? Real, bitter, demon dregs, suspended throughout. No getting round, my friend, (his eyes set serenely on mine, I didn’t look away) These, we’ve got to swallow, all the way to Golgotha. We all shoulder crosses, don’t we? (This I get, remembering my pain) Tears flow, sobs shake me to the core, his hand strong on my shoulder. We flow in and out of each other’s Being; Source to source in our humanity. We are one in the Cup of Life. We sat very very still. I knew my life had changed, capsized, though how was yet to come. For the moment I bowed, hand on my heart. a MARIA ROBSON enjoyed traveling and teaching French and English around the world — mostly Europe, Australia, Vietnam and Oman. The Secret of Having Everything You Want BY GUY FINLEY An excerpt from The Secret of Letting Go

EVERYONE WONDERS whether or not there is one great secret for truly successful living. There is. And it is not a secret. It has been quietly, steadily telling itself right in front of us all along. We just couldn’t hear it over the clatter and chatter of our own secret demands. Listen quietly for a moment. Everything can change right now. Learning to hear this supreme secret is no more difficult than choosing whether to swim against a current or to let it carry you safely to the shore. Let it speak its wisdom to that secret part of you that cannot only hear what it is saying but that is, in reality, its very voice. Listen to it now. It is saying, “Want What Life Wants.” Locked within these four simple words is the secret of an uncompromising power for effortless living; a new kind of power that never fails to place you on the winning side of any situation. Why? Because when you want what Life wants, your wish is for Life itself. The following paragraphs will not only make these life-healing ideas more personal for you, but they will help you to help yourself make a higher choice when it comes to what you really want from life. When you want what you want, you are often nervous and anxious because life may not cooperate with your plans. But when you want what Life wants, you are never disappointed with what happens. You are willing to sacrifice whatever it takes to get what you want, and this may include your integrity. But wanting what Life wants means you are always in the right place at the right time. When you’re guided by your wants, you are usually scheming in some way to win your next victory. But when guided by Life’s wants, you are quietly confident no matter what the circumstances. Your wants always keep you in

a battle or recovering from one. But when you want what Life wants, you are out of the reach of anger and anxiety. When driven by your wants, you are unable to rest quietly when you need to. But cooperation with Life’s wants keeps you awake and sensitive to your surroundings. Your wants leave you easily angered when someone or something gets in your way. But being in tune with Life’s wants frees you from ever feeling as though you’ve missed out. With your wants, you are forever driven to want something else, but with Life’s wants you are never thrown for a loss. Your wants turn you against anyone else who also wants what you want. But when you want what Life wants, you are in total command of events. When you strive to fulfill your wants, you are certain that what you have is who you are. But when you want what Life wants, you are mentally quiet. Finally, when you want what you want, you are always trying to convince yourself that you got what you want. But when you want what Life wants, you are eternally grateful for whatever Life has given you. Always remember the following. If any want is the source of anxiety or sorrow, that want is yours and not Life’s. Never accept the presence of any mental or emotional suffering as necessary, no matter how much importance these impostors lend to a particularly pressing want. By refusing their dark presence, you make space for the present moment to give you its indefinable presence. This is where the Life that you want — and that wants you — is waiting. Some might ask, “But what will happen to me if I give up my demands? Won’t I lose control of my life?” You cannot lose control of something you never had control over in the first place. No human being controls life — his, hers or anyone else’s. If ➤ see THE SECRET on p. 19

Create a Sangha “Until we reach a certain stage in our evolution, not only do we need the support of others of like mind, we have a duty to seek that support.” — Adapted from the I Ching BY MALCOLM STERN An excerpt from Slay Your Dragons with Compassion

AT THIS PARTICULAR TIME in evolution, when there is so much chaos around us, I see a great need for the company of fellow pilgrims on our journey through life. We need to surround ourselves with people who truly meet us, who allow us to speak our truth. People with whom we feel safe, with whom we can be uncertain in our footing and stumble in our speech in the knowledge that we won’t be trashed. We need to fortify ourselves by making sure we choose friends with whom we feel aligned, whom we can trust. For me, this is the essence of sangha. Sangha is a Buddhist term, and the sangha was originally a group of followers of the Buddha who renounced their worldly life in order to follow him around and assimilate his teachings. Thich Nhat Hanh brilliantly explains it in his Friends on the Path: Living Spiritual Communities: “Sangha is more than a community. It’s a deep spiritual practice. A sangha is a community of friends practicing the dharma together in order to bring about and contain awareness. The essence of a sangha is awareness, understanding, acceptance, harmony and love. When you do not see this in a community it is not a true sangha and you should have the courage to say so. But when you find these elements are present in a community, you know that you have the happiness and fortune of being in a real sangha.” The practice of sangha is about experiencing heart connection with others, with people who light our fire. We feel vibrantly alive in their presence. We rejoice in creative dialogue. Our conversations make us feel that everything is possible and that the trials that we endure have the potential to strengthen us. Sangha is about tuning in and finding those traveling a similar path (wherever they may be) and strengthening that connection.” But sangha is not just about being kind to

each other. Rigorous challenge is the essence of a deep relationship — but challenge as opposed to criticism. We need people who compassionately and wisely call us into question when we are deluded. In our sangha, what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger. Ultimately, we need places where we can take off our armor and be who we are. This takes a lot of effort.

EXERCISE: INVEST IN YOUR SANGHA Commit to the practice of sangha and get conscious about your relationships. Where do you feel heart connection? Where can you be honest? With whom can you be vulnerable? Decide who in your life you want to invest in, and where there is a call to expand your circle of friends. See if you can go deeper with the relationships you want to nurture. When you meet people who are important to you, make sure you talk about what really matters rather than pass the time. Be willing to release your mask of being “fine” and be daring in your willingness to communicate in a more authentic way. Could you find one other person who is on your wavelength and who you feel supported by and supportive of? Suggest formalizing that relationship so there is dedicated time given to building a place of depth between you. If you’re psychologically minded, then perhaps a therapy group, or men’s and women’s groups, may work for you.
If you are creatively minded, maybe you could join an amateur dramatics association, or a pottery, writing or painting group. If you are a physical, hands-on person, a walking and running group could be the scene for your sangha. If you are spiritually minded, a meditation or yoga group could work. a MALCOLM STERN has worked as a group and individual psychotherapist for nearly 30 years. He is co-founder and co-director of Alternatives at St James’s Church, London’s most important spiritual events platform, since 1982. Stern also teaches and runs groups internationally. His first book, Falling in Love, Staying in Love, was published in 2004. Malcolm also co-presented, with Vanessa Lloyd Platt, the Channel 4 series on relationships, “Made for Each Other” in 2003 and 2004 in the UK. I Think I Like You Better…Dead The Edge Interview with Cathryn Taylor on Her Forthcoming Book

really like. There was a really adorable side to him. He was an insurance salesman and was in sales, and he was really good at that. He had the personality to really connect with people? He did. He could make anybody feel comfortable. But, I wouldn’t say he was spiritually in tune, so the more spiritually inclined I got, the more distance there was between us.

BY TIM MIEJAN

CATHRYN TAYLOR IS KNOWN for many things, but being a medium is not one of them. Until now. A pioneering therapist in the Twin Cities known for her work with the inner child — and author of the seminal Inner Child Workbook — she is a certified Emotional Freedom Techniques and Trauma Release Exercises practitioner who also utilizes the Akashic Records in consultation with clients. She helps people grow stronger by merging psychological, addictive and spiritual perspectives, and assists the general public through her growing library of YouTube educational videos and podcasts on BlogTalkRadio. And in the midst of all of her work to support others, she suddenly was faced with her own crisis: the aneurysms that led to the death of her younger brother John, a soul with whom she had perhaps the closest relationship in this lifetime. Despite signs that John was recovering from the first aneurysm, he suffered a second one that left him weak and at times unresponsive in the hospital. At his bedside, Cathryn said, “John, are you there? Blink if you can hear me. Blink if you want me to continue to connect with you — Soul to Soul, on that higher plane.” John began blinking incessantly. Her brother made another valiant recovery — and then months later he fell down while trying to stand on his own. John did not recover. His passing naturally led Cathryn to experience much grieving, but somewhere deep, she knew her relationship with her brother would not end. In a recent interview with The Edge, Cathryn shared about the book she wrote in tandem with her brother — I Think I Like You Better…Dead, which will be released as a Kindle and on-demand book early next month — and revealed how the two of them plan to continue working together, she in this physical plane and John from the Other Side, to better support her clients. I’m guessing that you didn’t even know you were going to write this book until it presented itself? Cathryn Taylor: Well, it became a little obvious that there would probably be a chance of that, but it didn’t really formulate 1 6  WWW.EDGEMAGAZINE.NET

Cathryn Taylor, author of the forthcoming book, I Think I Like You Better...Dead. in my mind until a couple months after John was gone. I just felt such a presence with him the last few months before he died — and then the last week for sure. By the third month (after his passing) I was sure not only was I supposed to write this, but that we had, in fact, a contract to write this. How would you describe your relationship with him prior to his passing? The first 53 pages of the book outline both the closeness that we felt in early childhood and then the dissonance that came when he sent me a letter at age 30 saying he couldn’t be close to me anymore, because his wife at that time was uncomfortable with our relationship and how tight it was. All those reasons are explained. He became a source of criticism and judgment until the last couple years of his life — and then we had a re-convergence. What is interesting about this story is there were always signs of a really deep soul connection between us. Even now after his death, he admits he turned away from me and how those issues are resolved now that he is on the Other Side. How would you describe John as a person? He was a man’s man. He loved football. He loved to have a brew. He had a great personality. If I had to choose anybody to play him in a movie it would be Tom Hanks. He had a delightful side of him, but there was also what I call that Taylor edge, that ability to just cut you down. We all kind of grew up with that. He was somebody that most people who would meet him would

So now is the time I ask, why did you name your book, I Think I Like You Better…Dead? I tell the story about being at his memorial and in talking with one of his best friends, I shared the spiritual exchange I had with John. And his friends looked at me and said, “Well, I got to tell you, Cath, most of the time John thought you were a real kook.” And, that was true. But in the work we did the last year — and even the last weekend — of his life, it got confirmed that that was not true. Over the course of the last two years the exchanges we had reconnected us soul to soul. So the title of the book comes in the prologue, and it actually was given to us as we were celebrating the completion of the book. It really captures the reverent and irreverent quality of what we’re presenting. The book is fun. The book is exploratory. The book is adventurous, and we are having a good time now that he is on the Other Side — and that Other Side and meeting at the veil is so real. You mean is it real for him? It’s real for both of us. It’s like we’re being able to connect on a level that the human form disallows. I’ve got to plug the teachings of Abraham here, because I’m not sure I would have ever pursued it to this degree had I not been studying the teachings of Abraham. I had gone to see Abraham during John’s illness, and one of the statements that was made that stuck with me was, “We don’t continue to have relationships with those on the Other Side because we don’t expect to.” John and I talked about that. We had conversations in that last year about our commitment to staying connected and our beliefs in the possibility of that, so that door opened for a continued connection before he actually died. What did the two of you sense would be forthcoming? Can you put that in words? The interaction that happened was shortly after he had his first aneurysm, when I visited him. We’re walking around the

hospital corridor and we take a seat and he looks at me. John had had a lot of death in his life, of friends, and he kind of jokes with me and says, “You know, I’ve got to tell you, Cath, most of my conversations are with people that are dead.” We talked about death being the next big adventure. After his second aneurysm, I went to visit him, but he was completely unavailable. He was there, but vacant. He didn’t remember who his wife was. He didn’t remember who his children were. When I walked in the nurse said, “John, do you know who this is?” and he was able to say, “Yes, it’s my sister, Cathy.” But, that’s because the part of his brain that had the long-term memory had not been impacted. But, he was not able to have a conversation. I tried to make some kind of telepathic connection with him, and at one point I said, the way we were getting him to communicate was to blink, so I said, “John, if you want me to continue to connect with you soul to soul like I have been, blink.” And it was so darn cute. He started blinking really fast, to the point where I didn’t even believe it. When I left, I had to call my friend, Darlene, and say, “This just happened!” Did that really happen, or was I imagining it? All the way through this experience I kept consulting with my support group that does psychic readings and stuff, confirming, because as much as I professionally do that in my Akashic Records with people, doing it for myself personally is a completely different endeavor. Your ego wants it so badly, but you need that confirmation. In the book’s prologue you dictate the scene in which you and your brother are toasting the end of this two-year book project. Can you give us a sense of the scope of the project? The project was writing our story from the perspective of the relationship and showing from both sides of the veil the adjustments that had to be made for us to continue the evolution of the relationship. There were steps I had to take, to be groomed for or to get ready for — the expansion of emotions and the expansion of spirituality. Because of my background in counseling, I had all the tools of grieving and all the tools of dealing with my doubt. What I found fascinating — and what I think is part of the purpose of this book — is to show how those on the Other Side have to progress as well. It’s kind of assumed that once the spirit leaves the body, boom, they’re over there and they’re in a different dimension. John showed me the progression he had to go through — including after the first two weeks of his death when he was going through his life

esting to me is how we give so much credibility to the Other Side and what they have to tell us, but I have developed an appreciation for what we have to offer people on this side of the veil and how important we are as portals. One of the captions is, “You are my portal and I am your periscope.” Those on the Other Side are anxious for those of us on the physical realm to be receptive to them, because anything we can anchor in here is part of that creative force that Abraham talks about. It’s exciting to experience the cooperative and collaborative relationship that we can have once we, as humans, get over our grief. You can’t do that when you’re trying to hold on to those who have passed. I had to let go of John as my brother before I could connect with John soul to soul. Those steps are what the book portrays.

review. I write about how I am going to target that in my dream state as a family therapist. The purpose really is to tell an entertaining story to normalize the process and to give people a step-by-step idea of what they can expect if they’re able to get out of their own way and show up for it. Another purpose is to inspire people to see that there are really three different kinds of relationships with someone on the Other Side. There’s the continued casual contact, “Hey, are you okay? Yes, I’m okay. You’re okay.” Those are the visitations that we read about. There also is the purposeful relationship where there is unfinished business and how that can be resolved. And the third relationship is contractual, like John and I have, where we pre-agreed to do work together. John and I are being trained to do multidimensional family work together. The third relationship is an ongoing communication with a distinct purpose. We’ve got a purpose. John has assured me that he will be my ambassador now until I go to the Other Side. We’re in this for the long run. The book was just the first project. We’ve already done some of the family work together. I have a person on this side that I’m working with and we set up a time where he connects with that person’s loved ones on the Other Side, and together we are conducting multidimensional family work. I’ve done that with a woman whose daughter committed suicide. I worked with her on this side and John connected with her daughter on the other, to bring some resolution for the woman. One of the things that has been inter-

Usually when someone dies the people left behind are encouraged to let go so the soul of their departed loved ones can progress. Is this situation different because of the contract the two of you had as souls? I think that’s true, but what I’m being shown is that because of multidimensionality, John can be in relationship to me with our contract but it does not prohibit him from having other aspects of his soul continue. He’s already experiencing another lifetime that he’s started. So, I’m not holding John back from continuing, nor will our relationship on both sides have to end so his soul can progress. That was new to me. So would you say that is a misnomer then, that we don’t need to let go of our loved ones? I think that’s a dicey question, because we do need to let go of our attachment to them. Right, for our own healing afterwards. Exactly. We have to admit that they no longer are here. Throughout the book there are layers of every expansion John and I went through. I had to go through my personal grief, that he’s no longer here, that I can’t call him and ask him about this or that in the same way I used to. I had to learn a new vibrational signature for him. Later in the book I went through a period where I let go of him as he shifted and became my ambassador, but the more I let go of him, the more his personality traits were able to emerge in a bigger way, because they were no longer a threat to me trying to hold on to him on this level. In the book I make a huge point to explain that how my experiences with John’s passing were different than those of my sister-in-law. I didn’t have to get used to him not being there every morning when OCTOBER MARCH 2020 THE EDGE

I woke up like she did. If you’re still grieving and wanting your loved one to be there and you’re holding on to them for the wrong reasons, then vibrationally there can’t be a connection. I think the book does a really good job of taking the reader through those different variations of vibrations. As your experience goes along, you and John are both shifting in different ways. Right, and we lose contact and then we come back in and then I doubt if this is real or not. He told me, “it is real, get out of your own way, and just trust me and let go.” Then at one point he introduced me to Alicia Power (founder of Soul Mentoring, www.soulmentoring.com) and her work, which is amazing, and then we started to work with that. That’s when the true readjustment of our vibrational frequencies began to be worked with. Alicia is out of Australia. She is a master intuitive who for the last 40 years has worked with the higher echelon of spiritual tutors and creative beings. She is a step beyond Abraham, because she is really working with the Other Side to help us in this physical form heal on all sorts of levels. John introduced me to her and then he and I began to work together with her. His higher team and her higher team connected. I’m just sitting here one day and boom I see an email for a summit, boom, I sign up for the summit, boom I see Alicia. Within five minutes I had signed up for her event and then he and I were off on the next part of our journey. That was when he fully became the ambassador. I had gotten over my ego enough to allow him. I was the older sister. I led him for his full life. So, giving him power was a little disconcerting. I was talking to him like this: “I hope the people you’re hanging out with up there are a little different than the ones you were hanging out with here, because they’re not going to even appreciate this book.” He said, “That’s not your audience. You tell them that you’re talking to your dead brother and they’re going to laugh.” And I said, “Well, truth be known, you were one of those.” He said, “Yeah, yeah, I know.” You know? There was a lot of humor between the two of us regarding who was going to lead the other! It’s really a cute book. So those who pass over to the Other side aren’t necessarily going to be able to do the type of things John is doing without some work and commitment and purpose. Is that correct? It was two or three months before we could show up and do the work. About a month after he died I did a session with a medium and John just confirmed he was okay. It 1 8  WWW.EDGEMAGAZINE.NET

was an easy transition for him, but I need some time to acclimate and time to grieve. Then three months later he came to me in a dream and said, “I’m back.” That dream is what kind of sparked everything going forward? Yes. My response was, “Well, I’m not ready yet. I need a couple more weeks, and then we were off and running.” So, yes, he needed that time and I needed that time, and then progressively there were times when we had to separate from each other and re-acclimate, and then we would come back. That’s what I found so interesting: the progression and the adjustment. It was not just a straight line where, “Okay, I’m ready to start doing this work.” At each juncture we had to recalibrate and then expand, and we kept being shown the tools to do that together. What were the most unexpected gifts that manifested from this experience with your brother? The validation that he’s there. The evidencebased sign like signaling the story about Harvey the rabbit, which he played in his high school play. The life review that I was part of to the point where I was waking my husband up at night, because I was having conversations while I was asleep. Just the beauty of the veil being so thin. I think it’s timely because there’s so much more to the multiple dimensions that we all exist in. It has even given my inner child work so much more credibility, because they aren’t images, and they aren’t memories. Those inner child meditations are really going back to the vibrational frequency of who we were then, and that was a validation beyond measure. But, one thing I have to say, though, is that I was gifted with the expansion of John, and the security of my relationship with my husband on this side kept me grounded with someone I could share it with. What makes this book different from other books that have been written about transmissions from the Other Side? The transmissions are more about our relationship. I asked John that. I said, “You’re not going to be telling me anything new here. What’s going to be new about this book?” And, he started to laugh and said, “What’s new is that we’re continuing to have this kind of relationship and that we are really challenging the idea that there is such a separation between who we are.” And in reality you two probably have had other relationships throughout millennia, right? That’s what he’s starting to show me now.

He said, “God, wait until you see everything that we’ve been and everything we’re going to be!” That’s what he promised after the book was done. The book is just us getting it out to the world, but the true excitement of our relationship happens after the book. That’s when we get to hang out with each other and do our multidimensional work on this side and that side, where he’s going to be able to take me to other universes! That will be our story, and everybody else will have their own story. We just want people to realize that it’s possible. What they do with their loved ones is going to be unique to their own experience, and we really want to validate the reality that their story won’t necessarily be the same as ours, but this will give them a starting point. While your relationship with John is the through line for this book, what is it actually all about and what is it you and your brother hope to inspire in people? The willingness to open up to a continued relationship, and the desire to work through your own attachments to the limitations of this reality. Most likely you have been many things with those that are on the Other Side that are going to call for this kind of relationship. There is such a history of our souls, so we hope to inspire that exploration and to take away some of the myths. I sense from what you’re describing that the future of humanity will include much more of an exchange of information back and forth between the veils in a more dramatic and upfront way. I would actually say in a more relaxed way. I’m getting to the point now where the way that John communicates to me is just understood. It’s like when I developed the book cover. It was almost like I was a robot and they were just working through me. I’m not a graphic artist! My husband came home and said, “God! I didn’t think you’d be able to pull this off!” And I said, “I don’t think I did!” That cooperative collaborative relationship between us and the Other Side happens, and I’m hearing other stories about that — musicians and artists who have contracts and are connecting with people from the Other Side. I think we’re going to start hearing more and more stories about these cooperative relationships. a For more information on Cathryn Taylor, visit www.eftforyourinnerchild.com TIM MIEJAN is editor & co-publisher of The Edge magazine. Be the Driver of Your Car Be the Driver of Your Car BY MICHAEL ARTERBERRY I DON’T CARE IF you’re 20, 30, 40 or more. You could be making decisions in your life because of something that happened to you in your teenage years or other times during your life. No matter how old you are, I want to tell you that it is not too late to recalibrate and make adjustments to your life. You still have a lifetime of living to do and you can change how your past impacts your future. If we’re not careful, the things we think about can drastically affect our lives and the direction that it goes in. You can learn to be the driver of your car rather than the passenger. You may not have any control over what happened to you in the past, but you do not have to allow it to control your thoughts or drive your decisions. You can learn to control your thoughts and you have the ability to kick thoughts out of your head. Thoughts are like seeds; they plant themselves in your mind and germinate and grow if you allow them to. They will ultimately Be the Driver of your Car, guiding your path down the road of life if you allow them to have the keys. I did not allow the dysfunction of my home growing up to drive my car. I did not allow the negativity that surrounded me to seep into my thoughts, dictating where I was supposed to go and how I was supposed to live my life. I did not allow the seeds planted by my history to germinate, but rather I kicked them out, replacing them

with positive thoughts about myself and my life. You too can take control of your thoughts. You can drive your car down the path that YOU choose, by not allowing your history to infiltrate your mind, planting seeds of unhappiness and frustration along the way. No. You can take back the keys and drive your life to the destiny that has been waiting for you and that you deserve. Have you allowed things that have happened to you to keep you down, to hold you back from achieving success? Do you allow negative thoughts to prevent you from taking charge of your life? Do you want more from your life and have never been sure of how to do it? Let me be the first to tell you that it is never too late to take control of your thoughts, to stomp on the seeds of negativity before they germinate, and to grab hold of your keys again. It will, of course, require hard work, effort and you will slip and slide. But, I can assure you that you can take hold of the thoughts and history that have controlled you thus far and you can Be the Driver of Your Car! a MICHAEL ARTERBERRY is an author, Master Encourager and Motivational Speaker who inspires people to become the best possible version of themselves with his inspirational messages, podcasts, articles, presentations, courses and his book “Be Encouraged: 250 Days of Motivation and Encouragement.” He can be reached at www.michaelarterberry.com and readers can pick up a free copy of his book at www.shakethedirtexperience.com.

it weren’t for higher energies coming down, filling and animating your body right now, you couldn’t be reading these words. If you want to measure the level of an individual’s stress, measure his insistence that life does as he wants. The only thing you will lose by learning to want what life wants is your fear of not being in control — which was never real control in the first place. Here is the most important point of all. No human being needs control over life because, in reality, no one is apart from it. Who you really are, your True Nature, is not separate from Life. Let Life bring you itself. Welcome it. At each instant, it is new, full — untouched and undiminished by any moment before it. To enter into this full relationship with Life is to give yourself to your Self. INDIGENOUS WISDOM T H I S M O N T H ’ S F E AT U R E D T O P I C

The True Nature of Indigenous Wisdom Spirit Leaves BY JANET MICHELE RED FEATHER AT ONE POINT IN MY LIFE, I answered inquiries about my identity with what I thought was a clever line. I would retort, “I’m a Lithuanian/Ukrainian Jew, roaming the countryside with a renegade Indian.” The former attests to my familial roots but in no way captures my essence. The latter is a humorous turn-of-phrase of which Cedric Red Feather is fond. Cedric’s ancestors trace to a line of “Hushkas,” a band of Mandans so-called because, disenchanted with the strictures of U.S. Governmentcontrolled village life, they broke away to live on their own. Parted from the Tribe they loved, they were yet, perhaps, the happiest ones of all. What they wanted most was to be free to maintain their traditional ways. If asked to encapsulate what I have learned of traditional Native ways, it would be this: from Cedric Red Feather, I learned to trust my own heart. It is the seat of all wisdom and knowledge. Gurus, teachers, intercessors, life coaches and the like are all marvelous helpers in their own way. Ultimately, though, the real guides are the ones who throw you back on yourselves, for we are all sacred and holy. We are all part of the Great Spirit, the Grandfathers and Grandmothers, the Oversoul. Whatever name you give to the Intelligence that Creates the Universe and Multiverses, it is still the same. It is all love and light. True indigenous teachings and wisdom reside, not within governments, rules, laws or practices, but in the human heart. Cedric has taught me that the indigenous are buried on this land, and the people have always lived in the generations. Thus, it is no surprise that so many are awakening to Spirit Guides with Native names. Even though I am of Jewish descent in this lifetime, always, I feel Native Spirits around me. I feed them and offer them water; when I eat, they eat. If I see, hear or experience something that moves me emotionally, I am chilled all over; my tears are their tears, and vice-versa. In trusting my own heart, I traveled to North Dakota to fast and pray for a way of life. That was in 1993, and it was then that I met Cedric Red Feather, who introduced me to many beautiful Holy People. I met Naomi Foolish Bear, Vernal Cross, Sam Little Owl, Francis Cree, Gilbert Walking Bull and John Around Him. Even 2 0  WWW.EDGEMAGAZINE.NET

now, my eyes water over as I recall the loving emanation I could sense just being in their presence. They were real human beings; but the energies that surrounded them had a sacredness and depth that was overwhelming. It was healing just being near them. I feel such gratitude for the synchronous flow of events that brought us together. For centuries now, people have tried to rein in spirituality and spiritual truths. They are doctrinal, promulgating rules and regulations. They seek to bind people with written words and laws. Cedric emphasizes that we are born with free will; no one can take that from us. I have heard him say many times, “You cannot make rules or laws for people.” The spiritual path is so much more than the imperative, “Do it like this.” Both Cedric and his ancestors understood this, and that guidance made it possible for them to gain in self-knowledge and spiritual confidence. Spirituality, our human hearts, our souls, the Great Spirit — these are so much more vast than any human rules or laws. “You want to grow spirituality?” Cedric once demanded rhetorically. “Then realize it’s not about rules. It’s not about power. It’s not about following anyone. I could have

followers; but if I wanted followers, I’d have been born a duck. No, it is all about love and compassion.” Over the years, I’ve listened to so many of his traditional stories and bits of wisdom, I sometimes feel I owe him an incalculable debt. Then I hear the words of the Red Feather Man in my mind’s ear: “You don’t owe a true teacher anything — other than to live the teachings.” So it has been for me. I am trying to take all I have learned, center more in the heart, and just continue in as much love and light as I can possibly muster. a JANET MICHELE RED FEATHER, J.D., M.A., is a ceremonial singer who has learned over 60 traditional songs in Mandan and Lakota and sings in nine different languages. Seasonal Changes & Native American Traditions BY VALERIE

LANDY TWENTY YEARS AGO I MET a man who I had prayed to meet. His name was Kendal. I was looking for a Native American medicine man who would teach me his native ways. I had worked with others in the past who helped me along my path of learning and assisted me in overcoming spiritual darkness. But this was a different request. I asked Spirit to connect me with a very knowledgeable man who would be my friend and instruct me on the beliefs of his tribe. Spirit does this from time to time to get us to move along the path and obtain more knowledge just before we need it or right at the time when we need a good friend who will help us fight our spiritual enemies. Yes, all of us sometimes need somebody to come into our world to help us maintain our health and to grow. I just experienced getting a call from a woman who asked for my expertise as a medium and clairvoyant, which I gave her. When I realized that she was a Native American woman with the wisdom I so needed at the time, we kindly exchanged knowledge. It was comforting to know Spirit had arranged this phone meeting prior to us actually talking about what she needed and about my pending problem. I smiled and thanked Spirit for having us meet like this. Spirit has a way of connecting two complete strangers at the time when we needed each other. It happens to people all of the time, but most of us do not realize how often it comes into play. How does it happen? First, we put our thoughts or request on a platter and hand it over to the Creator. He, in turn, picks it up and asks my guides begin to work on my behalf. In critical circumstances, the Creator acts instantly. I have experienced it both ways. Spirit guides, who have a human aspect to them, are heavenly creatures designed by God to work with us. Native American spirits are different. They may be animals or old ancestor spirits

who come to us as we hold tobacco in our pinched fingers and have sweet grass (sage) burning in our abalone shell. They also go to work for us and do the necessary things we need to be done. God can do anything, so He involves all of His spiritual helpers for us if we know how to access them at the time we need them. It is important for us to be in tune to our spirit helpers, especially during the seasonal time of shortened sunlight. With the changing of the season from the summer solstice to the autumn equinox, we may experience familiar feelings and remember people from our past who may be good or not so good for us. At this time, plants in the Midwest die. Days of light become shorter in length. Weather temperatures decrease and we feel the loss of both. These changes began between September 22-23, and we shift to the Winter Solstice from December 21-22. We can feel this shift and it will affect our mood. It inspires us to remember past situations and occurrences in our lives. As a result of these memories, and a lack of sunlight, we can get depressed. Knowing and understanding this reality is still not dealing with what our minds and bodies feel from it. So when you feel your moods changing because of all of this, be patient with yourself and know that we have the natural ability to change with the seasons. We may not like it, but humans do adapt. Please remember to call upon your spiritual helpers during this seasonal transition! May you too enjoy the beautiful days of autumn ahead of us and blessings to you all. a VALERIE LANDY is a psychic/medium/card reader and clairvoyant. The Powhatan Tribe’s Use of Plants BY KELLY BAKER THE POWHATAN TRIBE occupied Eastern Virginia in and around the 1600s. It’s the same land that English settlers attempted to call their own. Due to conflicts with each other over land and food, the Powhatan tribe forced the English settlers into “the Starving Period.” Both parties are my ancestors, so I take deep satisfaction in embracing the intriguing facts of this era, including the amazing medicinal remedies mastered by the Powhatans. They used 89 local remedies. Their use was vast, including various treatments for the lungs, eyes, skin, menstrual cramps and pain. Aletris farinosa, often called the unicorn root, was utilized as a tea for menstrual cramps. It can be found in eastern parts of the U.S. and Canada. Aside from easing the pain of menstrual cramps, it helps to prevent miscarriage, ease digestive issues, and relieve muscle pain. The plant itself is tall and thin and displays beautiful white flowers that resemble a unicorn.

Prunus serotina, also known as black cherry, is a beautiful tree that is widespread in North and South America. The Powhatan tribe steeped the bark or berries to treat lung issues, such as whooping cough. The rest of the plant is toxic, so it’s important to

be careful to only consume the berries and/ or steep the bark. Sphagnum peat, now a favorite source of beauty for gardeners, was once used to treat wounds by the Powhatan tribe. Sphagnum prevents bacterial growth and lowers the pH levels in wounds. It creates a sterile environment under bandages. Much can be learned from indigenous wisdom on medicine from the Earth’s natural gifts. Many herbs, plants and flowers are medicinal, but many are also toxic. We have to fully research anything we use and how much is safe to use. We can all take a page out of the books of our ancestors, especially those who are native to the land, and learn how to make the most out of what’s growing right in our own backyards. a KELLY BAKER is an author and freelance writer. Black Lives Matter

WHY THIS TIDAL PROTEST MOVEMENT WILL PROD US TO SAVE THE PLANET

BY CHRIS

H. HARDY, PH.D.

THE BLACK LIVES MATTER (BLM) movement that surged after George Floyd’s murder on May 25, 2020, is not the first revolutionary wave that shouted a demand for justice, freedom and equality, and that spearheaded a new worldview on the planet. Similarly, 1968 was a year of protests for freedom worldwide. In the United States, the civil rights movement peaked with the onset of the Black Power and Vietnam war protests. On April 4, Martin Luther King, Jr., was killed, and violent revolts erupted all over the country, leading to the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1968. After their win in the 200-meter race at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico, American sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos protested against racial discrimination by bowing their heads and raising a black-gloved fist — a Black Power fist — during the playing of the national anthem (see photo on right, below). In France, the May 1968 student revolution was a demand for more freedom — its core rallying cry was “L’imagination au pouvoir (Imagination in power)!” However, the 2020 Black Lives Matter movement is a unique consciousness leap in many respects, not only because it is erupting in a tidal wave of change endorsed by the majority of the U.S. population, but because it affects so many communities and legal domains. Moreover, it is garnering traction and support in many countries, prodding them to deal with their own history of racial and social inequality, as well as police brutality toward minorities. And in so doing, it will be both powerful and enduring.

A FOCUSED CONVERSATION BY THE WORLD UNTIL CHANGE HAPPENS It’s the first time that a socio-political crisis erupting as a spontaneous tidal protest movement in the U.S. has been regarded by the protagonists as a “conversation” with the stated intent to keep it (1) focused, and (2) ongoing as a process until significant changes and reforms do happen. Indeed, BLM has conquered the communication space and is ushering a non-stop and fullfledged flow of change (See photo on right, above). And this conversation brings to the conscious awareness of our societies worldwide the African Americans’ depth of experience of 400 years of oppression, both as individual plights and community ordeals. It’s a moment also when we see deep empathy from people of all races for the 2 2  WWW.EDGEMAGAZINE.NET

Above: Black Lives Matter protesters. Left: Americans Tommie Smith and John Carlos raise black-gloved fists during the playing of the national anthem at the 1968 Summer Olympics. changes happen here and now, and to carve these steps in history. The BLM motto was not new. It was launched as a grassroots movement when, in 2013, Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors and Opal Tometi formed the Black Lives Matter Network, which is part of the larger coalition Movement for Black Lives (M4BL). However, the movement took over as a massive collective self-criticism and atonement this year, with the death of George Floyd. The wave of social justice it has created keeps moving worldwide and will without doubt end up shaking the geopolitical status quo. At the end of May, over 450 major protests were held in cities and towns across the United States and three continents; as of early September 2020, 15 to 26 million people participated in protests in the U.S. alone. historically and presently oppressed ones, and a shared willingness from all aware individuals to indeed stop the systemic racism in the laws and police organizations, and recurrent in police brutality and social behavior. In the wake of a tone-deaf leadership in the U.S. that, beyond being unable to understand what was at stake, started to spurt out debilitating orders-by-tweets, massive efforts were initiated by cities, states, corporations, sport leagues and influential individuals, in order to make

DEMOCRATIC SOCIETIES FACING THEIR OWN COLONIALIST & IMPERIALIST PAST AS A COLLECTIVE SHADOW TO BE DISMANTLED As democratic societies, we are confronting our past flaws as the brutal imperialist and colonialist powers we have been. We certainly need to address our own systemic racism and endemic biases and reflect on what is impeding us from living up to the stated democratic principles of equality of all human beings and to the constitutional

rights of individuals and communities. And I believe that facing these deep flaws and shortcomings amounts to facing our own collective dark side — our collective shadow. The infamous blunders and self-serving blinkers of Donald Trump choosing the Juneteenth date for a rally, set in Tulsa, Oklahoma, no less, fueled an earth-shaking realization of the damning massacre of a thriving Black community (who prided itself as the Black Wall Street) in Tulsa in 1921. Juneteenth, or Emancipation Day, is the most sacred celebration for African Americans commemorating the announcement on June 19, 1865, by Gen. Gordon Granger of the Union Army, of freedom from slavery in Texas — although Abraham Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862. The end of slavery only became effective in all U.S. states with the 13th Amendment ratified in December 1865. Well, what was supposed to be a triumphant comeback rally (the first one after the Covid-19 lockdown) met a revengeful fate of its own karmic doing; not only did it need to be pushed off the sacred 19th date to the next day, but it happened to be a miserable flop, with two-third of the seats in the large venue remaining unoccupied. Now the coup de grâce came on July 10 when The Supreme Court declared a large region in eastern Oklahoma, including Tulsa, to be Native American land in terms of federal criminal law. This was based on the ancient treaties with the Creek Nation that had been forced, together with several other Indian nations, to leave their ancestral land in the Southwest (following the passage of the Indian Removal Act in 1830) and walk the Trail of Tears to their new territory west of the Mississippi. This July 2020 decision was now upturning all previous criminal prosecutions carried at the state level. Given that we are dealing — all of us, and especially the White descendants of these colonialists such as me — with the focused and implacable dismantling of a collective shadow, I expect the self-critique and the sea-change that BLM sets in motion to address more and more global problems, notably imperialism (already raised through the statue of Christopher Columbus), as well as royalty, colonial era treaties and authoritarian regimes. Thus, the BLM movement expresses a momentous shift in consciousness — a global worldwide revolution. It amounts to a collective realization: • About systemic racism, police brutality, the oppression of African Americans, of Native Americans, of Aborigines, of LGTB+ and the endemic discrimination based on race and gender; • About the extreme violence of White Supremacists — both physical and psychological — that reveals a will to erase the

Damage from the Juneteenth Tulsa Race Massacre in 1921. cultural, emotional, artistic, philosophical and ecological worldview of Black people, Native Americans, communities of color, and minorities.

POLICE BRUTALITY IN THE U.S. TARGETING BLACK & BROWN PEOPLE Make no mistake: the Black Wall Street community in Tulsa’s Greenwood quarter had its people slaughtered, its buildings burnt down, its wealth looted, its community newspapers and services reduced to ashes because they were thriving! Rare accounts following the massacre (see photo above) often painted it as perpetrated by an angry White mob against so-called “riots,” as if it had been a spontaneous attack. But the fact is, thousands of people were slaughtered or wounded by numerous rifles at ground level, hundreds of survivors were later detained, and a large number of classy buildings and streets were destroyed by fire-bombs dropped from a dozen airplanes — and all that suggests a totally different scenario. Indeed, the scale of the destruction resembles that of a war zone! As the Wikipedia article states, “Numerous eyewitnesses described airplanes carrying white assailants, who fired rifles and dropped firebombs on buildings, homes, and fleeing families. (…) Law enforcement personnel were thought to be aboard at least some flights. (…) A number of newspapers targeted at Black readers heavily reported the use of nitroglycerin, turpentine and rifles from the planes.” Explosions were also witnessed, as well as fire-bombs dropped on the gas station. Historians without blinkers will definitely have to check if state law enforcement, military personnel or federal forces were involved. What is certain is that the whole operation had been carefully planned, that

it took a lot of military resources and had a substantial cost, and also that the highest state officials couldn’t not be implicated and responsible for the death of at least 300 Black civilians and the wounding of 6,000 others, who posed no real threat at all. Of course, the massacre was dutifully hushed as this Black community was reduced to despair and utter poverty [See archival photos]. However, Mary E. Jones Parrish set herself to write immediately a first-hand account of the “Events of the Tulsa Disaster,” which was published in 1922. Also, thanks to the relentless work of Jim Goodwin, the publisher of the Oklahoma Eagle newspaper, Tulsa’s massacre historical recollection endured; yet, even the mass graves have yet to be found. The perceived nuisance this Black community posed to the White supremacists was certainly the fact that they had managed their business so well that it was making them wealthy, happy and free. In a historical photo, the Black residents of Greenwood showed such assertive carefree faces and buoyant bearings that it convinced me that was precisely their high “crime” — the fact they were so successful and no more the subservient poor. Similarly, many people murdered in custody in our times may have been targeted because they were bright and gifted, talented and thriving, full of life and with a high emotional intelligence. An offensive and harrowing fact for me as a woman and a psychologist is that the great majority of Black men shot and/or killed in custody were young fathers; even worse, sometimes the harm was done in front of their kids, thus harming the kids psychologically (such as with Jacob Blake, as we’ll see). Police unions have to be investigated thoroughly as they embark in a show of force to protect their own legal unaccountability and militarized equipment. Fortunately, since George Floyd’s death, the racial justice protests in the name of unarmed African Americans killed in custody have, for the first time, brought some of the perpetrators to justice. In Minneapolis, the three officers responsible for George Floyd’s death by chokehold while in custody were fired, arrested and charged. The White father and son who killed Ahmaud Arbery in Brunswick, Georgia, while he was jogging were arrested and charged. In Atlanta, the officer who killed Rayshard Brooks who had been drunk and asleep in his car at a Wendy’s drive-through was fired and charged. It is to be expected that the immunity provided until now to officers by their local police unions will be challenged and upturned successfully in the courts and by lawmakers in Congress. Yet, despite these recent noteworthy charges leveled against abusing officers, their use of lethal force goes on unabated, as if it was so entrenched that they couldn’t figure out that the times had changed!

APPALING NON-SEQUITURS IN MOST POLICE SHOOTINGS AND KILLINGS Let’s be aware of the fact that there is a disconnect, a non-sequitur, in most police shootings and killings scenarios. Take, for example, Breonna Taylor’s murder, in Louisville, Kentucky, on March 13, 2020. Breonna, a 26-year-old emergency medical technician, was shot eight times at her home where she had been sleeping with her boyfriend. There was a disconnect between three police officers who were given a no-knock search warrant on the basis of her ex-boyfriend purportedly receiving postal drug packages at her address, and a commando-style ramming of her apartment door after midnight by officers in plain clothes who immediately fired military-grade weapons at her! It’s hard to believe that her boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, who grabbed his gun next to the bed in rightful self-defense, called 911 to ask for help, and shot a warning shot in the legs at the first intruder (wounding him lightly), who was arrested and jailed — despite the fact no drugs were found on site! Worse, while they were arresting him and taking him to their vehicle, Breonna was left mortally wounded on the floor of her hallway, where she had been moaning for five minutes, then lay unconscious or dead for some 20 minutes with no ambulance being called or medical help given to her. If medical assistance had been on the scene quickly, she may have been resuscitated and could have survived. (Walker 2 4   W W W. E D G E M A G A Z I N E . N E T

was only released from home incarceration due to Covid-19, on May 22.) The whole operation makes no sense at face value, and shows several non-sequiturs: • A no-knock search warrant is not a no-knock kill warrant. • Officers should be in uniform and wearing body cams; those who rammed Breonna’s door were in plain clothes and never announced who they were, according to several witnesses. • Self-defense as a response to the boyfriend’s warning shot would have meant the officers shot at the man holding the gun, not at Breonna, who went to the door to ask, “Who is it?” • Another officer shot indiscriminately through the window (and was charged for that), yet that doesn’t explain why Breonna was shot with five to eight bullets herself out of an overall 20 that were fired, but her armed boyfriend, also in the hallway, was not hit. • The officer shot in the legs was taken to the hospital immediately; meanwhile, they arrested Walker outside and left Breonna dying on the floor. • The coroner said she was not called to the scene until at least an hour after the shooting. A search warrant for drugs would entail a mandatory entry early in the morning and a thorough search of the house before people are taken into custody, let alone killed. We cannot escape the conclusion that the real cause of the murder doesn’t lie in the official explanation, but rather that Breonna had been beforehand marked and targeted for an instant kill. Furthermore, the three officers were neither arrested nor charged, and only the main one, Detective Brett Hankinson, was fired, believe it or not, from the Louisville Police Merit Board and only after three months! This is despite the fact that it was known that the police had filed a flawed incident report stating that Taylor had no injuries and that no forced entry occurred. The group VICE News, which launched The 8:46 Project (8.46 minutes was the time the officer had his knee and body weight on Floyd’s neck), is conducting very thorough investigations of police brutality. They uncovered, notably, that multiple cases of misconduct and even of child molestation that had led to internal criminal investigations of Detective Hankinson didn’t block his being “elected,” no less, to the Police Merit Board “which helps make decisions about police misconduct.” How deeply disturbing! Yet, the promotion of officers with previous internal misconduct investigations has happened in too many other cases. Things are starting to change at a great pace, thanks to the BLM movement loudly asking for justice by organizing gigantic

protests. On June 11, the Louisville Metro Council unanimously (26-0) passed an ordinance called “Breonna’s Law” that bans no-knock search warrants and mandates the use of body cameras during searches by the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD). +++ Consider Rayshard Brooks’ murder. Similarly, a non-sequitur applies to the killing of Brooks in Atlanta on June 12, 2020. A drunk driving case without accident (in the worst-case scenario) should lead to a driving under the influence (DUI) indictment, which would be fought in court with the help of attorneys; moreover, forced DUI breathalyzer tests remain banned under Georgia bill, and drivers have the right to request an independent test at their own expense. In this specific case, an unnecessary escalation occurred after Brooks failed the breathalyzer test. The two officers, who had been interacting with Brooks for more than 40 minutes without him resisting, suddenly moved to cuff his hands behind him without stating that he was under arrest (something that is mandatory and led to one charge). When Brooks resisted being pulled down to the ground, he was shot with a taser. Brooks grabbed it, shot the taser back at the officer and fled. Brooks then turned back and fired the taser a second time above the officer’s head — thus, the officers knew the two-shot taser was now empty. Furthermore, it was established through one of the police body cams that the main officer already had his hand on his gun, ready to shoot, before Brooks resisted. There is a non-sequitur when the main officer drew his gun and fired two lethal bullets, hitting Brooks in the back while he was fleeing, even though he posed no threat with the taser now empty. A second non-sequitur was when Brooks had fallen to the ground, deadly wounded and was not moving. The officer who shot Brooks proceeded to kick the prone body while the second officer stood on his shoulders for about two minutes — instead of providing him timely medical aid. Brooks died soon after at the hospital during surgery. The main officer was fired and charged with felony murder and aggravated assault. The two officers had Brooks’ ID and his car. Why would Brooks choose to flee if not for having sensed that they were after his life and not a simple DUI charge? Again, it seems the cause of the murder lies in another dimension than the actual event in time and place. Could we be dealing with something else than random encounters with police here?

+++ Consider George Floyd’s murder. The same disconnect between an unarmed Black person and an alleged lawbreaking or “probable cause” led to the cold-blooded murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis on May 25, 2020. How can a counterfeit $20 bill lead to the killing of a handcuffed man who was pinned to the ground by no less than three officers? The lead officer, Dereck Chauvin, while kneeling on George Floyd’s neck for more than eight minutes, acted like he had killed a prized game in a Safari park and was posing for the photo-op. He looked defiantly at the cameras of the shocked and pleading witnesses, while a fourth officer stood at the ready to intervene in case anybody tried to intervene. There are two additional problems in this case. First, why did police arrive at the scene (after the shopkeeper called 911 about the passing of a fake bill) so quickly that Floyd was still in his car parked near the shop? The same question applies to the Rayshard Brooks murder, in which the police, via 911, were called by the Wendy’s employee because a car stopped in the drive-through lane caused other customers to drive around it. Isn’t this the case of just a badly parked car? Furthermore, compare these two cases with Breonna’s murder, in which three neighbors independently called 911 after hearing many gunshots, and five minutes later her boyfriend called 911 to report that Breonna was deadly wounded — and yet 20 minutes elapsed before she was looked at by medics. In her case and George Floyd’s, no resuscitation procedure was tried. Why is that? Secondly, why did the police need military-grade weapons? Why do they use tasers (sometimes repeatedly and lethally) on non-resisting people? And why, when shooting, do they always seem to kill Black citizens instead of incapacitating them?

DUE TO BLM, THE ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS ARE FINALLY INVESTIGATED Killings by police and other law enforcement agencies in the U.S. reached 1,146 deaths in 2015 and 1,093 deaths in 2016 (according to The Guardian database); as for 2019, The Washington Post reported a total of 1,004 people were shot and killed by police. The debate triggered by these cases began to question the involvement of heavily armed criminal police in cases of petty thefts and misdemeanors, and in dealing with persons experiencing mental health or substance use episodes, or non-violent domestic problems. People also began to consider whether it would be more effective to utilize other community resources to deal with

Properties in green were purchased by the city of Louisville on Elliott Avenue. such incidences. That seems to be a very sensical solution, especially considering the number of young people and even kids who are being killed, hit with tasers, or put at great risk of losing their lives for such carefree behaviors as walking beside the pavement (18-year-old Michael Brown case in Ferguson, Missouri, in August 2014), crossing a street haphazardly, playing with toy-guns, having a mental health episode (13-year-old Linden Cameron, Utah, September 4) or using substances — or just because some deranged White woman called 911 because a Black man suggested she follow the law and leash her dog in Central Park. Shocking examples of such cases have indeed hit the news in the months following George Floyd’s death. Because too many Black and Brown people end up dead while in custody, we have also to consider the possibility of intentional and targeted stalking and hunting — in which the person targeted has no chance whatsoever to get away alive. That is ensured because the hunter is heavily armed and may have numerous allies against one person or only a couple. Second, the hunter holds the apparent aura of law enforcement — and no witness would dare to do more than record the event with a cell phone, rightly fearing for their own life, because they would be shot instantly at any hint of interference beyond pleading or shouting. That’s an absolute certainty, and sadly this could be part of the game hunting. One cannot help but reflect on the existence of one or several organized clans of vicious supremacists and unhinged sadistic ex-mercenaries that may have infiltrated police departments (in the same way that pedophiles infiltrate churches and schools to be near their prey). They would be

shielded by their official status (and police unions), and they could even assist in the elimination of another group’s targets. In a country where the KKK can still exist lawfully and the president simultaneously tries to frame Antifa as domestic terrorism, these suggestions are by no means farfetched. As for the couple who wore large swastikas stamped on their Covid-19 masks while wearing a Trump 2020 t-shirt and were expelled from a Minnesota Walmart, they for sure were exemplifying the subscript: whoever is against anti-fascists is logically a fascist. In Breonna Taylor’s case, VICE News unearthed a bombshell. On the night she was killed, the Louisville Metro Police Department targeted five properties, three of them on a single block of Elliott Avenue. The brutal intervention was led by a suspicious Place Based Investigations (PBI) unit, a previously unknown squad that the Louisville Metro Police Department dedicated to the Elliot Avenue area. (PBI was created only in 2019 to focus on crime hot spots in the city.) In a video presenting various official documents, VICE News referenced that “since 2017, the city’s Land Bank Authority (…) has acquired 22 properties here, or nearly 40 percent of [Elliot] street.” (See graphic above). In one case, the owner was forced to sell his house for $1! A Louisville resident said, “We know particularly when they are trying to push Black communities out of a place over policing and nuisance ordinances.” Let’s keep in mind, though, that even if in the (now FBI-investigated) Breonna Taylor murder, the non-sequitur clearly points to the city’s multimillion-dollar, real-estate project called “Vision Russell,” the ulterior motive for other cases may not belong to the same category. The response from the OCTOBER 2020 THE EDGE

present Trump Administration to the BLM protests (and its 2020 election slogan ‘Law and Order’) raises other questions at the federal and political level. Indeed, regarding the present electoral period, we can’t eliminate the possibility of a political agenda that hopes to trigger a nationwide Black revolt, thus creating an apparent racially framed chaos that would give ample pretext for muscular intervention and eventually a rule of (martial) law to be enforced in specific (democratic or swing-states) cities. We have seen this in Portland, and Donald Trump has warned he intended to send federal forces (which he claimed to be 75,000 strong) to several cities where recurrent daytime peaceful protests have been held, and where limited clashes and looting happened at night.

CONSCIOUSNESS LEAP However, events have not followed this course. Instead, a cross-racial consciousness leap manifested instead of a mere Black insurgency —involving a sizable portion of the White population. All oppressed minorities worldwide were suddenly vindicated in their demand for equal justice. Racial injustice, of any type, couldn’t be tolerated anymore, anywhere. On July 21, ABC News reported that “63 percent of Americans support the Black Lives Matter movement and a record 69 percent – the most by far in 32 years of polling – say Black people and other minorities are denied equal treatment in the criminal justice system, two of several signs of deep changes in public attitudes on racial discrimination.” (See chart on right.) On June 3, Defense Secretary Mark Esper, as well as the top military brass of several current and past administrations were part of a robust bipartisan siding with the Constitution. They strongly opposed the President’s order to invoke the Insurrection Act and deploy the army to quell protests against police brutality. Hence, Trump’s interference in the protests led to interventions by Border Patrol and ICE squads, federal agents without identifying insignia, and armed supporters acting as vigilantes, with deadly consequences. Meanwhile, new protests erupted in Wisconsin and Portland, Oregon, following the August 23 shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin, as he opened the door of his SUV, in which three kids were sitting. Seven bullets in the back left him paralyzed. Just as in other cases of police shootings, this situation involved a police response to a 911 call made by Blake’s girlfriend regarding a non-violent domestic dispute. Police arrived only a couple of minutes later! It is beyond crazy that armed police would be called instead of a psychiatric community-based counselor team. And in all of these cases, it is beyond appalling that police would use live ammunition and 2 6   W W W. E D G E M A G A Z I N E . N E T

shoot, sometimes killing, a parent in front of their kids. On August 29, the Portland protesters faced the massive intrusion of a “Trump 2020 Cruise Rally” acting as vigilantes; they “fired paintball guns and pepper spray at protesters from the backs of pickup trucks as they rolled through the city.” One of them, Aaron Danielson, a supporter of the right-wing group “Patriot Prayer,” was shot to death. During the August 25 protest in Kenosha in response to Blake’s shooting, a Trumpsupporting militia led to the killing of two protesters (and the serious wounding of a third one) by a 17-year-old boy from nearby Illinois who was armed with a semi-automatic AR-15. He was a member of an Illinois Police Cadet Program that obviously taught youths how to shoot, but apparently forgot to inform them about the constitutional rights of citizens to protest, or how to control their own emotions — thus mirroring the total lack of ethics in the adult police programs. On June 1, after the president’s infamous Bible photo-op in front of St. John’s Episcopal Church facing the White House (for which occurrence A.G. Barr ordered Lafayette Square’s peaceful protesters and journalists to be kicked out violently using irritants, truncheons and gases), the mayor of Washington D.C., Muriel Bowser, ordered federal forces out of the city by the next day. On June 5, Bowser renamed part of a downtown street, near the White House, Black Lives Matter Plaza and had Black Lives Matter painted with a vibrant yellow paint that is visible from space. As of July 29, a deal vigorously steered by Oregon Gov. Kate Brown and Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler was reached with the White House so federal forces would leave

Portland the next day. Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon, a Democrat, compared the federal agents to an “occupying army.” Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, called them “storm troopers.” Governor Kate Brown tweeted on July 21, “This is a democracy, not a dictatorship. We cannot have secret police abducting people in unmarked vehicles.” We have to expect the same overarching principle of state sovereignty in these matters will shun and thwart efficiently new invasions of these federal forces elsewhere. Yet, let’s remember that one operational definition of stupidity is to keep following the plan’s sequence even when the previous steps have gone awkwardly wrong.

U.S. OIL COMPANIES FUND POLICE FOUNDATIONS An investigation by the Public Accountability Initiative revealed that some of the most powerful oil companies in the U.S. are funding the police foundations of major cities (such as Chicago, New Orleans and Houston), thus allowing them to buy militarized equipment, while simultaneously dodging any scrutiny due to the fact these police foundations are nonprofits. As the July 27 article by Nina Lakhani for The Guardian states: “Police foundations in cities such as Seattle, Chicago, Washington, New Orleans and Salt Lake City are partially funded by household names such as Chevron, Shell and Wells Fargo.” THE ABUSE OF EMINENT DOMAIN FOR PRIVATE DEVELOPMENT The Institute for Justice (IJ) has researched the problem of cities handing over their power of eminent domain — the ability to take private property for public use — to corporations (private bodies), invoking the

pretext of economic development. Notably, consider the Kelo v. City of New London, Conn., ruling, on which this handing over is based. In 1998, when pharmaceutical giant Pfizer built a plant next to Fort Trumbull, the city of New London ceded its power of eminent domain to the New London Development Corporation, a private body, and allowed it to take control of an entire neighborhood for private development. An IJ article stated, “The fight over Fort Trumbull eventually reached the U.S. Supreme Court, where the Court in 2005, in one of the most controversial rulings in its history, held that economic development was a ‘public use’uj under the Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision against Susette Kelo and her neighbors sparked a national backlash against eminent domain abuse, leading eight state supreme courts and 43 state legislatures to strengthen protections for property rights. (…) Since the Kelo ruling in June 2005, citizen activists have defeated 44 projects that sought to abuse eminent domain for private development.” Ironically, Pfizer was later unable to obtain enough financing and abandoned the plant project near Fort Trumbull. The problem could be notably pertinent in the many cases of evictions and disowning of homeowners in predominantly Black neighborhoods, and could play a role in the Vision Russell project in Louisville.

DHS INTEL CHIEF ORDERED TO DOWNPLAY THE THREAT OF WHITE SUPREMACISTS AND FABRICATE ANTIFA’S THREAT Brian Murphy, former under secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and, as head of its Office of Intelligence and Analysis, its chief intelligence officer, filed a whistleblower complaint on September 8, 2020. The complaint asserts that in August he was demoted from his position because of his refusal to go along with the fabrication of intelligence to match Donald Trump’s rhetoric, and for making formal complaints about the political pressure. According to The Guardian article, “A homeland threat assessment (HTA) drawn up by Murphy’s intelligence analysts in March this year was also blocked by [the acting secretary of Homeland Security, Chad] Wolf and other DHS political appointees because of its sections on Russian interference and the white supremacist threat. Murphy was told by his superiors he ‘needed to specifically modify the section on white supremacy’ (…) When he refused, the HTA was taken out of his hands.” A New York Times article stated, “In other instances, the [DHS]’s secondhighest ranked official, K.T. Cuccinelli II, ordered Mr. Murphy to modify intelligence

assessments to make the threat of white supremacy ‘appear less severe’ and include information on violent ‘left-wing’ groups and antifa….” We cannot not recognize the semantic source of this order when, according to The Guardian, Wolf reportedly told Murphy his Russia assessment should be ‘held … [because it] made the president look bad.’ We know how Donald Trump is always afraid of “looking bad” — for instance, if he were to don a mask to protect others. In a September 4 article, The Guardian reported that “Donald Trump has directed the Office of Management and Budget to crack down on federal agencies’ antiracism training sessions, calling them ‘divisive, anti-American propaganda.’” This shows just how insensitive he is to the shout born of collective intelligence! “The OMB director, Russell Vought, in a letter Friday [9/4] to executive branch agencies, directed them to identify spending related to any training on ‘critical race theory,’ ‘white privilege’ or any other material that teaches or suggests that the United States or any race or ethnicity is ‘inherently racist or evil.’” Make no mistake: the Trump-Pence team is not running solely against Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to be the gold and silver finalists; they’re running against the flow of history. Again and again, Trump sits on the wrong side of history, holding a Confederate flag and a back-flipped Bible, tone-deaf to the magnitude and loudness of the demand for racial equity, and the focused will of now-aware citizens.

QUESTIONING THE MILITARIZATION OF POLICE It was a shock for me to learn about the predator culture being willfully and expertly fed to aspiring police officers — by means of very expensive training seminars. (See John Oliver’s well-researched “Police” video on YouTube. The logic being taught to potential offers went this way: All people you’ll deal with are predators, and only by being a predator yourself, ready to kill, can you defeat them. As an ethnological psychologist, the perversion of the humanistic values (not even mentioning the moral ones) is alarming. Gone is the principle that somebody is innocent until proven guilty; buried is the outdated expectation that people in influential positions should “set an example about what’s a socially sound behavior.” And this trend is certainly why the strong pushback against a “dehumanizing influence” (in social media posts and tweets, in aggressive behavior) is gaining so much traction. The militarization of police (allowing its lethal brutality) — one key target of the BLM protests all over the U.S. — has suddenly become a dire concern in regard to basic democratic values. It also raises

the question of the allocation of funds by cities and states. It has been repeatedly emphasized, during the BLM conversation, that police unions and police forces are being overfunded, and that takes an enormous toll on city funding, which comes from taxpayer’s money. And moreover, the demand by law enforcement for more money is detrimental to the funding of community based services. Yet, these services — such as education, healthcare, creation of jobs, and diverse assistance and protections plans — have been shown to drastically reduce the poverty, helplessness and survival problems that often lead to petty delinquency and domestic problems. The full and armored covering of the face and body of federal agents with their heavily militarized gear and equipment, their guerrilla tactics of snatching people off the streets and taking them away in unmarked vehicles, all the while sometimes bearing no insignia, is of course the height of such dehumanizing, bullying and gaslighting behavior. When these war accoutrements and tactics are used against an unarmed group of protesters inside the country, the decent rationale put forth early June by top military officials siding with the Constitution, in their bipartisan standoff against the use of the Insurrection Act — that the army should not be used against one’s own civilian population — definitely applies. Military accoutrements, especially making the police forces look like faceless and emotionless robots, definitely should be banned, and quickly — because at any point in some future warfare, humanity could well be faced with exoplanetary AI and robotic enemies. Let those be the faceless ones, and let us, the people, remain human. In an extraordinary counterpoint to these dehumanizing behaviors, the “wall of moms” soon joined by the “wall of veterans” and even a “wall of dads” who locked arms and stood proudly in between federal agents and the protesters in Portland has been heartening. So has the full-fledged endorsement of the BLM movement by sport teams and leagues this 2020 season, in the U.S. and abroad, vindicating former San Francisco 49er quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who first took a knee in 2016 to protest against social injustice in Black communities and continued doing so during that whole season. It ended up costing him his job. Now in 2020, teams throughout the National Football League are taking a knee and uniting for equal justice, and shirts, banners and fields are stamped with the BLM mantra. As The Guardian’s 9/24/2017 article by Les Carpenter subtitled it: “The quarterback [Kaepernick] wanted kneeling in protest for the anthem to start a national talk about race and justice. sions, one after the other, have been taken (and will continue to be) at all levels of governance and society, including by the judiciary, Congress, states and cities, sporting leagues and fans, and more. They will instigate real and lasting changes in our social organization, aimed at defeating systemic racism and ending the overarching gaslighting of a hitherto powerless population by an abusive immunity cladded police force. What turned the tide was an awesome collective intelligence that suddenly blossomed out of the Black community and spoke out loud and clear, irresistible, as a call for togetherness, empathy, shared humanistic goals and emotional intelligence. Green activist Naomi Klein has brought the message home repeatedly, especially in her new book On Fire: The (Burning) Case for a Green New Deal, writing that the environment goes hand-in-hand with social justice and worldwide solidarity. The domains of civil rights that have been infringed upon through the oppression of Black, Native and Brown communities, as well as minorities, are so variegated that they cover most of our social and environmental lives. These unbearable injustices, brought to light by the BLM movement, have made most of us, We The People, aware and determined to act. They include the topics I raised in this article, and much more. We now have to find highly efficient legal and organizational ways: • To treat the Black, Brown and Native American communities with equity, empathy and fairness; to protect their ownership over their land, neighborhoods, private homes, their lives and own bodies; • To sustain their health, their clean air and water, the integrity of their land

and soil, their access to education and resources; • To respect and protect the youth, those suffering psychologically, as well as the poor and the sick. We also, collectively, must enable the cities and counties to organize their own community life and safety, and to be the decision-makers as to their investments, and how they equally access and share their resources. In most instances of abuse, we see the deleterious, pernicious warping of power and wealth to profit the very few, thus impoverishing and disempowering the 99 percent. We see the too powerful lobbies and corporations crushing the lawful exercise of constitutional rights and perverting the democratic process itself. For too long, we have watched them turn the planet into a scorched Earth just to serve their own insatiable greed. As we, the decent people of all colors and all walks of life, are watching in horror day in and day out the constant assault on our sense of justice, on our empathy for others, and on our intelligence, it gives us the strength and the immense soul power to raise ourselves higher in consciousness and to come together as one collective intelligence, in order to jumpstart a creative and empathic, socially just, holistic society — and save our planet. a CHRIS H. In 30 Seconds: Refocus & Accomplish More BY TURIYA An excerpt from Unreasonable Joy: Awakening Through Trikaya Buddhism

DURING AN NHL HOCKEY GAME, the average ice time for a player per shift is 30 seconds. When a player hits the ice, he gives all of his strength and his full focus, because in 30 seconds, multiple goals can be scored, and games can be won or lost. Then he sits for a few minutes and gets up to do it again. While most of us won’t be strapping on a pair of ice skates anytime soon, we can power up our lives with a 30-second change. If we give our full attention, we have the ability to accomplish a multitude of tasks in 30 seconds. Here are nine things that can be done in 30 seconds: • Walk around the room to get your blood flowing • Catch your breath after vigorous exercise by breathing deeply • File the papers on your desk 2 8   W W W. E D G E M A G A Z I N E . N E T

• Stretch your neck, shoulders and touch your toes • Write a short email • Tell a joke and laugh • Create clarity so you can see your next step • Center your awareness in gratitude • Meditate and dissolve in Samadhi In our fast-paced world, on a planet that’s literally rotating at 1,000 miles per hour and traveling around the sun at 67,000 mph, it often feels like we don’t have time to do anything. We attempt to multitask, but what really happens is we rush through our to-do list without focusing on any one task and then we have to fix the mistakes caused by our lack of attention. What we don’t realize in our mission to get it all done fast is that we are more efficient when we do one task at a time. Even a computer’s CPU, which gives the illusion of multitasking, really does only one function at a time; it just does it very quickly and ➤ see 30 SECONDS on p. 29

Six Ways to Solar Power Up Your Soul & Divine Connection BY

switches between programs seamlessly. The next time you feel frazzled and moving in great haste, stop for 30 seconds. Time yourself, because 30 seconds is much longer than you may think. Take deep breaths and allow yourself to feel the air fill and empty from your lungs. Focus on all the little things bringing you joy in this present moment. Give thanks for all you have right now. This allows us to find the calm center in the middle of the storm of life. After 30 seconds, look at your to-do list and pick one task. (Don’t have a to-do list written down? Make that your first task.) Like a hockey player, give that activity your full focus and strength for 30 seconds. You might be surprised how after 30 seconds you can keep going. Maintain this same intensity of focus for 10 minutes and notice how much you get done. Perhaps after 10 or 15 minutes you’ll need to check your messages or email. Give the task of checking messages your full attention. Then switch to the next item on the list, again giving your entire focus to whatever you need to do. When you get lost in the hustle and your focus begins to waver, stop for 30 seconds to make a change by resting in your center. Practice Pointer: What can you accomplish in 30-second bursts? TURĪYA is a Buddhist monk, teacher and author who, despite living with chronic pain, founded the Dharma Center of Trikaya Buddhism in San Diego in 1998 to share her path. For over 25 years, she has taught thousands of students how to meditate, trained teachers, and helped people discover the unreasonable joy of our true nature. Her new book, Unreasonable Joy: Awakening through Trikaya Buddhism, will be published in October. Printed with permission from the publisher at Electric Bliss, www.TrikayaBuddhism.com. SHELLEY F. KNIGHT

AS WE FIND OURSELVES in times of fear and uncertainty, we may be feeling low in mood and energy. It is during such times that we must endeavor to let go of what we cannot control, and focus on what we can rely upon. Mother Nature is one of life’s certainties, and by providing our daily light with the sun, we are constantly reminded and encouraged to learn how to rise up and shine every day, too. When we begin to embrace the practice of sun worship and all things solar, we ignite a spark within us — within our soul — which connects us deeper to ourselves, as well as the Divine. When we do reconnect, we are reminded that we are not so separated after all. We all hold a strong presence within us that has the power to light up our own inner world, as well as the world around us. Our solar plexus chakra, with the sanskrit name Manipura — meaning “shining gem” — is associated with the element of fire, and is our personal source of inner power, self-worth, self-esteem, self-belief, warrior energy, and the power of transformation. When we are balanced, we can expect joy, laughter, self awareness, optimism, stability, clarity, and an intuition we can rely upon. However, when our solar plexus energy is out of balance, we express frustration, fear, anger, victim mentality, lack of life purpose, poor focus, and loss of control. How can we use the sun to power up our solar plexus and connect more authentically to ourselves and the world around us?

SHAKE YOUR CHAKRAS Our body is where we reside within our earthly incarnation, so we must endeavor to look after our permanent shelter. To help realign your chakra system, you can try many forms of movement. Yoga poses that work particularly well are sun salutation, mountain pose, plank pose, chaturanga dandasana, cobra, and downward facing dog. However, if you just want to grab the nearest hairbrush and dance around your bedroom singing ’80s ballads, that is as equally as effective at shaking your chakras, and will certainly bring you joy. EAT YOUR SUNSHINE Yellow foods can help rebalance you, which include bananas, brown rice, corn, lemons, live yogurt, millet, oats, pineapple, rye, spelt, squash, sunflower seeds, or yellow peppers. Try some soul-warming

turmeric, ginger or fennel to spice up your life, or wash your sunny snacks down with a herbal tea — ginger or peppermint work well.

CRYSTALS Crystals are great for emitting their energy just from their presence, so try carrying them around in your pocket, place them around the home, or holding them during a meditation. Great choices for personal power are: Amber, citrine, lemon quartz, tiger’s eye, topaz, rutilated quartz, yellow calcite or yellow tourmaline. WALKING MEDITATION Discover a beautiful spot in your garden or nearby open area where you feel a connection. If you are able, stand barefooted on the nurturing grass, and visualize roots forming from the soles of your feet, down to the very center of Mother Earth. Once you feel connected, strong and stable, allow yourself to intuitively walk around mindfully. THE AYURVEDIC WAY One of the most beautifully nurturing Ayurvedic ways is to live our days in synchronicity with the Earth’s circadian rhythms — rising up and winding down with the sun. Start your day with a practice of mediation, yoga, journaling, or positive affirmation. CREATE YOUR OWN LIGHT Sometimes in life, or simply as the sun sets, we need to create our own light. By simply lighting a candle, we can invoke a sense of well-being. Set the candle flame safely somewhere at eye level or lower, where you can look at the flame without slumping. Try focusing purely on the flame. Your mind may wander at first, but just keep bringing your attention back to the flame. When you feel you have completed this calming meditation, you can blow out the flame while making a wish. SHELLEY F.
