Publishers Announce that The Edge Magazine is for Sale THE PUBLISHERS OF The Edge magazine — Cathy Jacobsen and Tim Miejan — announced that the 28-year-old publication serving the spiritual, healing and holistic communities of the Twin Cities and Upper Midwest is for sale. In addition, The Edge announced that its planned Edge Expo 2020, slated for this fall, has been canceled. Like publications worldwide, The Edge was devastated by the coronavirus pandemic because it caused the lockdown of all of its distribution sites this spring and severely affected the advertisers who make the publication possible, almost all of which are small businesses. The Edge has not been in print since the April edition this year but has remained online with website articles and a digital flipbook of the publication. In considering their options, The Edge publishers announced that the recent downturn has been a sign that The Edge needs to continue with new leadership that better understands the digital market and social media opportunities. “We know how to produce a magazine and sell ads for a publication that is a physical paper copy that is printed and distributed, but we are not as tuned into the 21st century reality of digital distribution and marketing,” Miejan said. “The Edge needs a new team in place that is committed to continuing to serve the holistic community and has greater insight on how to get it seen in this new digital age going forward.” Miejan announced that he will be retire from The Edge after the December 2020 edition, the end of his 25th year with the publication. He was named managing editor in January 1996. He came to The Edge as a spiritual explorer with journalistic roots, having worked a dozen years as a reporter and editor for a daily newspaper near Kansas City. “It was a dream job,” he said, “and to this day I am grateful for the synchronicity that led me to the Twin Cities at the exact time THE EDGE MAGAZINE 763.433.9291 P.O. The Edge needed an editor. This has been an incredible and rewarding experience, and I truly hope someone comes forward to carry on The Edge’s legacy. It was founded at a time when the holistic community was in its infancy in the Cities and served as an umbrella for all of the businesses and voices to grow and blossom. “I cannot express how grateful I am for the staff who assisted us throughout all these years, and all the people throughout the community — and around the world — who have contributed articles, artwork and insight to support us as we move forward in our personal and collective evolution of consciousness.” Jacobsen, who joined The Edge in March 2001 as a member of the sales team, also said she is retiring from the publication at the end of the year. “The greatest experience I have had while working with The Edge over the years,” she said, “were the relationships I formed with advertisers and exhibitors whom I respect and admire for their knowledge and

all of their unique gifts that they offer and have come to know as friends. “I am grateful for all of the support that all of these small businesses and practitioners gave to The Edge each month so we were able to produce a magazine. “The Edge has been an invaluable learning experience for me throughout the years, with all of the great resources such as classes, articles and just the great conversations with my customers. I am thankful to have gotten to know so many special people.” She said it is important that The Edge continues to exist to support the community. “2020 has been an uncertain year so far, to say the least,” Jacobsen said. “I think The Edge has a very important place in this new world that can help people like never before. I do believe that The Edge could reach many more people than the print issue could by someone who is adept at online platforms and social media. The Edge has much more to say and do in this world — in 2021 and beyond.” The Edge survived the 2008 economic downturn when founding partner Gary Beckman sold the publication to the current owners. The Edge fought hard to survive during the past dozen years — a time in which print advertising sales globally have sharply declined due to the growing time people spend online. The publication’s goal to produce a comprehensive holistic expo this fall, to help support the magazine, also was a victim of the pandemic. All vendors who reserved exhibition booths are receiving refunds. The Edge currently boasts a website featuring more than 6,100 articles dating back to the 1990s, a flipbook of the current magazine and extensive archive of past issues, an event calendar, a network of Blogtalkradio podcasts, an online directory and an email list that connects to Facebook and Twitter accounts. Anyone interested in discussing the purchase of The Edge can do so at 763.433.9291 or 651.578.8969. a

Eleven Laws that Lift You to the Next Life Level BY GUY FINLEY An excerpt from Freedom From the Ties that Bind

THINK OF EACH of the following eleven laws as individual magic strands of a flying carpet. Make it your aim to weave them together in your mind. Then watch how these lessons combine to effortlessly lift you to the next higher and happier life level. • The First Law: Nothing can stop you from starting over. The greatest power you possess for succeeding in life is your understanding that life gives you a fresh start any moment you choose to start fresh. Nothing that stood in your way even a heartbeat before stands there now in the same way. It’s all new even if you can’t as yet see it that way. You’ve only to test the truth of this fact about the newness of life to discover the incredible freedom that waits for you just behind it. And then nothing can stop you. You’ll know the real secret and the perfect power of starting over. • The Second Law: Don’t be afraid to see when something doesn’t work. Learn to be sensitive and to listen to the inner signals that try to tell you when something isn’t working. You know what they are. Frustration and resentment to name just a few. The presence of these emotional troubles isn’t trying to tell you that you can’t succeed, only that the road you’ve insisted upon taking so far doesn’t lead where you want. Learning to admit when something isn’t working is the same as teaching your self what will. • The Third Law: If it doesn’t flow, there’s more to know. Learn to recognize that all forms of strain — whether at work, in your creative efforts, or in your relationships — are unnecessary. The friction you

feel mounting when busy at some labor is never caused by the task at hand, but by what you don’t yet know about it. This means the only real reason for your strain is that you’ve got hold of a wrong idea you don’t yet see as wrong. This new insight allows you to release yourself by showing you what you need to know. Flowing follows your new knowing. • The Fourth Law: Don’t take the easy way. There’s no getting away from what you don’t know, which is why any time you feel compelled to go around a problem by taking the easy way out, that problem always comes around again. And isn’t that what makes life seem so hard? Learn to see the “easy way” as a lying thought that keeps you tied up and doing hard time. Getting something over with is not the same as having it completed. And as this insight grows, so will your understanding that the whole idea of the “hard way” has always been just a lying thought, as well. Now you know: the complete way is the easy way. So volunteer to make the “hard way” your way and learn the real easy way. • The Fifth Law: On the other side of the resistance is the flow. There are often times when it feels as though you can’t go any further in your work or studies. But you can learn to go beyond any blockage. Make the following clear to yourself. Those moments — when it feels as though you’re least able to get beyond yourself — are not telling you that you’ve gone as far as you can go, but only reveal that you’ve reached as far as you know — for now. This higher self-knowledge about your true inner position allows you to see the resistance you’re feeling for what it ➤ see NEXT LEVEL on p. 6 SEPTEMBER 2020 THE EDGE

really is: a threshold, and not a closed door. Walk through it. Nothing can stop you. On the other side of the resistance is the flow. Learning to go beyond you is the same as entering into the new. • The Sixth Law: Watch for the opportunity to learn something new. Everything is changing all the time. That means life is an endless occasion for learning something new. But this means more than meets the eye. Just as you’re a part of everything, everything is a part of you. The whole of life is connected. And your ability to learn is part of the wonder of this complete, but ever-changing, whole. Learning serves as a window, not only into the complex world you see around you, but through it you may also look into the “you” that’s busy looking into the world. And when you’ve learned there’s no end to what you can see about the amazing worlds spinning both around and within you, you’ll also know there’s no end to you. So stay awake. Learn something new every day. You’ll love how that makes you feel about yourself. • The Seventh Law: Learn to see conclusions as limitations. If you approach the possibilities of learning about your life as being limitless, which they are, then it follows that any conclusion you reach about yourself has to be an unseen limitation. Why? Because there’s always more to see. For instance, let yourself see that all conclusions are illusions when it comes to the security they promise. There may be security in a prison, but there are also no choices behind its confining walls. Learn to see all conclusions about yourself as invisible cells. For that’s what they are. The seeming security these conclusions offer are a poor substitute for the real security of knowing that who you really are is always free to be something higher. • The Eighth Law: Have no fear of being afraid. Fear can’t learn, which is why you must learn about fear if you ever wish to be a fearless learner. So, the first thing you must learn is how to get past your fear of being afraid. Here’s how. The next time a fear of some kind tries to fill one of your moments, try to see the difference between the fact of your situation and your feelings about it. This is the right use of your mind. For instance, it’s a fact that interest rates change. It’s not a fact you have to get scared when they do. That fear is not a fact of life, but only becomes one for you as long as you insist that life perform according to what you think are your best interests. As you learn to see that these fearful feelings don’t belong to you, but only to your wrong thinking, you cease to be afraid, even of your own fears. • The Ninth Law: Never accept defeat. As long as it’s possible to learn, you need never feel tied down by any past defeat in your life. Here’s the real fact: nothing can prevent the inwardly self-educating man or woman from

succeeding in life. And here’s why: wisdom always triumphs over adversity. But to win real wisdom calls you to join in a special kind of struggle. And if this battle had a banner under which to rally, here’s what would be written upon that higher call to arms: “But I can find out!” Yes, you can learn the facts. You may not know the real reasons why you feel so lonely or worried at times, but you can find out. And you may not understand how you could have been so blind to that evil person’s real intentions, but you can find out. Take these four words that are freedom’s battle cry. Use them to defeat what’s defeating you. • The Tenth Law: Learn to let go of painful pretense. Most people approach their troubles with one of these two non-solutions: they either pretend their problem isn’t a problem, or they pretend they’ve solved their troubles with temporary cover-ups. But their pain remains. It doesn’t have to be this way for you. You can learn to let go of painful pretense. Here’s how. When facing an old problem, what you don’t want is another “new way” to deal with it. What you really want is to learn something new about the true nature of what has a hold on you. To go far, start near. When faced with any pain, let go of what you think you know. Act towards your trouble as if you don’t know anything about it. This new solution is the only true one because the truth is you don’t know what the real problem is. Otherwise you wouldn’t still have it. Letting go of what you think you know puts you in the right place for learning what you need to know. • The Eleventh Law: Persistence always prevails. If you’ll persist with your sincere wish for higher learning, you can’t help but succeed. Persistence always prevails, because part of its power is to hold you in place until either the world lines up with your wish or you see that your wish is out of line. But, for whichever way it turns in that moment, you’ve won something that only persistence can pay. See the following: if you get what you think you have to have to be happy and you’re still not satisfied, then you’ve learned what you don’t want. Now you can go on to higher things. And should you learn you’ve been wearing yourself out with useless wishes, then this discovery allows you to turn your energies in a new direction: self-liberation. Our time will be well spent in exploring this new kind of learning, a higher schooling that instructs the mind with the energy of the heart. We must always remember that law without love is like a guide without eyes. a GUY FINLEy is the best-selling author of The Secret of Letting Go, The Essential Laws of Fearless Living, and more than 40 books and audio albums on self-realization. Driving Forward Please... BY MICHELLE

PLOOG TODAY I MADE A remark to a co-worker, “My goal is to get through this pandemic without needing rehab, gaining 20 pounds, or getting split from my fiancé.” I paused. I laughed. I paused, again. Wow, how the bar has been lowered. I’m a driver, achiever and believer in the greatness in each of us. I strive to live in the becoming of my best self every day. And yet there it was: my low expectations for this unknown duration of Covid-19. Not that any of these things are bad on their face. Also, these are very real thoughts in my head. Survival thoughts because we are in survival mode as a species. How can we beat this virus in a race for the stronger, smarter species? Humans vs. Covid-19. That’s as survival as it gets. This is new, challenging and scary. It’s facing an unknown, unseeable, unpredict-

able enemy as a collective society that isn’t operating from a common source of information on how to move forward safely. It’s downright terrifying and having self-compassion is critical right now. Having said that, what I know for sure is that I don’t want to come out of this pandemic feeling like I “lost” this time. I want to still be progressing forward while providing myself compassion and grace. So I figured out a simple way to stay focused, and I’m eager to share the method with you! Here are three ideas for driving your life forward through this time of uncertainty: 1. Ask yourself what is calling you. This may seem hokey or contrived or impractical, but really, you may have more time and space for introspection at your disposal right now. This is perfect for listening to your inner voice. It could be pulling you

toward something new and different. Something you’ve been ignoring, avoiding, or shoving away due to the usual pressures and expectations of daily life. With daily life upended, what needs doing, fixing, being, becoming? 2. Set progressing goals: • Write down your top three goals for the week. Write down why each goal matters to you. • Each morning write down one way you’ll work toward each goal that day. For example, if your weekly goals are to lose one pound, have your garden planted, and create more intimacy with your partner, your daily goals might be to take the dog on a three-mile walk, prepare the garden bed, and give your partner a massage. • Look at your schedule and plug in when you’ll take the three actions throughout your day. • Do the things. Set aside 15 minutes to journal at the end of your day: • What experiences of my day created the most value for me? • What experiences of my day created the least value for me? • What do I want to do differently tomorrow? • What am I grateful for? Try this for a week and let me know what you discover by sending an email to hello@ yogamode.org. I’ll be eager to see what “ah-has” you have! Stay safe, stay positive, and know that today is a blessing. a MICHELLE PLOOG has been a nationally recognized yoga teacher for over 13 years. Reaching Out to Depressed Teenagers BY

ELLIOTT ROBERTSON

I’M CONCERNED ABOUT teenagers in today’s world. In November 2018, the Washington Post reported on the skyrocketing rates of depression in American youth. A new report on the state of mental health in the United States says that in recent years, there have been “alarming” increases in major depression in youth. According to Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, “the rise was most rapid among those ages 12 to 17, increasing from 8.7 percent in 2005 to 12.7 percent in 2015.”
I was a depressed teen once. I disliked high school. I didn’t fit in. I was never diagnosed or on medications. It wasn’t major. I’ll never forget the day my mother said she had something she wanted to talk about with me. We sat down in the living room and she told me she was concerned about me. She told me depression was nothing to be ashamed about, that it was very common. She offered to arrange for me to see a psychologist. “Just let me know if you’d like to,” she said. “It could be helpful. Many people see psychologists — there’s no need to be ashamed about seeing one.” That brief communication turned my spirits around. Just a little, but enough to start the journey upwards. It was the caring underneath my mother’s words that spoke to me, of course. I never gave much thought to seeing a psychologist. Still, I’ll be forever grateful for being seen and cared for. For a moment, my heart was receiving oxygen. LIFE STORIES I’m always interested in people’s life stories. I wonder what gold can be gleaned from those who came before us. What can we learn about ourselves from the autobi8  WWW.EDGEMAGAZINE.NET

ographies of those who preceded us? I consider St. Theresa’s life. She lost her mother when she was 4 years old; a few years later her older sister, who had acted as her second mother, entered a Carmelite convent in Lisieux, where she would be cloistered and forbidden to return. I wonder how St. Theresa came to lead a life of deep contentment and great fulfillment. I consider the short life of Anne Frank. She lived out her days with a bright, positive focus, even when she and her family were hiding from the Nazis. This saint and this child were able to journey through times of great personal challenge without succumbing to depression. I wonder if they were able to navigate the difficulties because they were living in their hearts, rather than being led by the chatter of the judgmental mind? Anne Frank’s journal entries testify to her abiding in her heart. Her belief in the goodness of humans — a belief rooted in the heart and not in “the monkey mind” — did not wither when she was being chased by the Nazis. St. Theresa wrote in her autobiography of being devastated by her mother’s passing and devastated once again when her older sister left her when she was 9. She shed tears; she didn’t fall into self-pity, bitterness or depression. She knew from a young age that life was larger than the circumstances that came her way. As a spiritual coach, I have come to believe that more than anything else, “the monkey mind” accounts for the increasing number of people who are depressed. When we spend our days swimming in the soup of judgments coming from the chattering mind, we are more likely to see the world as a place to be feared. We are also more likely to see ourselves as powerless to make things better.

We get stuck in the misery of seeing the world through this lens — not only due to habituation, but also because the mind doesn’t like to be confused or to admit that it might be wrong. If someone suggests that other possibilities might be available — say, the possibility of seeing oneself through the eyes of love, or the possibility of choosing different responses to the world — the mind is apt to snuff out the idea like a candle snuffer puts an end to the candle’s flame. “No, that is simply not true,” the mind will say. “I already know the world is unsupportive and difficult and I have evidence.” Or, if someone suggests that you’re not socially inept, to use another example, the mind will say, “You made a blunder at the party a few months ago — you are an idiot.”

MONKEY MIND I wonder if depressed teenagers today are trapped in their “monkey mind” and need to find a pathway from the mind into the heart. Would Sally benefit from imagining herself as a magnificent light-filled being with a heart that has been designed to love the world? Would she get a moment of respite from the quicksand of her “monkey mind” and the harsh judgments it stirs up by tapping into her imagination? What if she were to start each day for a few weeks playing with these images and sensing her nobility? Would her nobility and grandeur become less hidden, or at least more visible and palpable to herself? Would she begin to befriend her true self? Would these moments of oxygenating the heart help her pivot from the direction of misery to something closer to the direction of heaven? Years ago, my mother said, “I know things can get better.” She offered to find a psychologist for me in a time before visualizations became popular. Perhaps you’ll want to share your caring spirit with a depressed teenager in your life, be it your child, grandchild, or someone else. Offer the help of a psychologist, if you choose to. Or suggest the following practice to your dear one: Take two or three minutes upon waking to imagine yourself standing by the shoreline (or anywhere in nature) radiating light and inner beauty and standing tall in your true essence. Try this for three or four weeks to see if the effects are cumulative or deepening over time. Let your dear one know everyone’s different. What works for some people might not work as well for someone else. Still, new approaches might be worth a try. a ELLIOTT ROBERTSON is the author of Say Yes to Life: Seven Keys to Living Life Full Out from Within. September Horoscope: Prepare Mercurial Messages through the Zodiac BY HEATHER ROAN ROBBINS FROM NOW THROUGH the new year, Mars works its way through feisty, impulsive and rebellious Aries and leaves a pool of fuel to either power our work and our dreams or explode if this energetic fuel is mishandled. We are all being pushed to transform through some powerful challenges this fall. Mars recently squared Pluto, Saturn and Jupiter, all clumped together in Capricorn, and on September 9-11 Mars turns retrograde, stirs the energy fields and squares this lineup again. Where Mars now stirs our chart points to the origins of this challenging fuel in our life, and where that clump of Capricorn planets now dwells points to where we are pushed to transform. This month we prepare. Get organized early in September as Mercury trines the Capricorn clump. Our social life has more opportunities after September 6 as Mercury enters Libra and Venus enters Leo. Watch for temper flares around September 9 as Mars retrogrades. Stay steady to deal with real issues and avoid depression September 20 as Mercury squares Pluto. Feel a surge for balance and social justice after the fall equinox, September 22. Sharpen focus when Mercury enters Scorpio September 27. Manage frustration creatively as Mars squares Saturn September 29. Aries (Mar. 21-Apr. 19)…Your charming, direct, forward thinking and sometimes belligerent personality can stimulate needed changes in the workplace, if you keep your heart open and listen to others’ critiques. Watch temper sparks around September 9; what looks like a step backwards may actually be the way forward. Taurus (Apr. 20-May 20)…Watch the sparks in the shadow world; some unexpressed anger or ambition of your own, or someone nearby, challenges you to not ignore the problem, but to see how to bring it out into the open in a fair and clean way. If you grumble, ask yourself why and keep looking for a deeper answer. Gemini (May 21-June 20)...Your friends may go through wild times and ask you to stay in there with them; their anxiety can create difficulties that require your patience. Communicate, check in with teams, and get organized in early September; feel your social life improve after September 6 as Venus enters Leo. Cancer (June 21-July 22)...Speak up, but be thoughtful around chains of command. Watch for volatility in the workplace or with a father figure; don’t get hooked into old patterns that put pressure on your more personal relationships. You are called to help the situation transform into a mature balance of power and responsibility. Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)…Work through some careful logistics early in September; after September 6, as Venus enters Leo, you will want more and have more

to offer. Deal efficiently with uncomfortable details mid-month, and enjoy a deep breath after the fall equinox. Aspects of your worldview are transforming. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)...You are helping others navigate a tempestuous time. Don’t take on their anxiety, just help them stay on target. Look for potential breakthroughs in the creative process, romance, and with younger family members. Stay organized early in the month. Go deep, but be kind to yourself, around September 20. Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)…Loved ones may be unusually high maintenance right now and this can make the home front feel more like a place of major karmic efforts than a cozy sanctuary. Hang in there, and play for the long haul. And trust your heart. Life will feel easier after the autumn equinox. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)…It’s an efficient fall if you develop a steady routine, but don’t project your drive onto others and become disappointed. To try and push the river will just give you a headache. The way you think, communicate and perceive is transforming; use your mental muscles carefully. Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)...Quarantine is hard on restless Sagittarius; give your restlessness a healthy place to go and don’t take it out on beloveds. Feel more room to move after September 12. Your finances or resources may be in transformation; your ability to handle troubles, and help other people handle theirs, is your superpower now. Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan.19)…Your life is in transformation; roll with unsettling, but potentially exciting, changes. Attributes of your identity may be in metamorphosis. If you’re restless about where you live, consider moving or making a home renovation, or an existential shift. Logistical frustrations abound early September but smooth out by the 17th. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)…Communicate with your heart connected to your head this month; otherwise, in the name of being direct, you may sound irritated and spark an unintentional argument. Keep compassion engaged with honesty, particularly September 20-23. You’ll have more room to move next month. Pisces (Feb. 19-Mar. 20)…Mobilize your resources, finances, energy or your body; be ready to move to create change in the larger world around you. Act upon your philosophy, and publish or expand your knowledge. Be organized, but also bekind to yourself, early in September; your process eases after September 12. a HEATHER ROAN ROBBINS is a heart-centered and choice-oriented astrologer, palmist and ceremonialist with 30+ years’ experience. Our Transformation, Step by Step A Pleiadian Message BY CHRISTINE DAY BELOVED ONES, we greet you. We hold a mantle of love around your planet with the rest of the Universal community as you are launched into the complete reset of energy within your Earth. The magnetic core within your planet is resonating with the Universal pulse and continues to adjust its frequency settings to a higher multidimensional vibration of light consciousness. The network grid of light is fulfilling its purpose by interacting within the magnetic core, creating stabilization on the planet as the frequencies intensify. The Earth’s rotation is being re-adjusted to align within this higher resonance of light, which has been building and continues to expand within the magnetic core. As the rotation of your planet quickens, there is a creation essence of an expanded vibrational flow of light forming. This activation is designed to support the changing profile of the planet. The natural forces are being interwoven through this higher resonance. This higher frequency of light is currently re-establishing a pure energetic profile within the trees, plants, mountains and earth, impacting the waterways and oceans throughout the planet to bring about an expansive rebalance within nature. This is creating a realignment to the higher resonance that exists within the entire Universe. BROKEN TIME The illusion of time is gradually being broken down in segments. Humanity needs to be able to gradually stabilize as the breakdown within this process unfolds, creating adjustments within physical systems. This huge transformation must be achieved step by step, one phase completing before the next, as the energetic atmosphere of the planet moves into a completely alternative dynamic rhythm and balance. The winds of change are rapidly flowing out across your Earth plane, creating upheaval through the shifting of reality within your day-to-day living. This happening is bringing forth a higher frequency within your life that you can more readily access through the avenue of your heart space. You are being called to shift your focus of these changing realities, from the illusion of the drama perpetuated by your ego mind to Truth within the profound openings now offered through your heart space. This timeframe is about you returning to a higher, more authentic space of consciousness by developing a deepening 1 0  WWW.EDGEMAGAZINE.NET

connection to your multidimensional heart space. This is a moment for self-realization. As you begin to redevelop your heart muscles, you can be reinitiated into the state of your unlimited potential. Each time you choose to consciously enter the alternative reality doorway within your heart, an evolution takes place within the cells of your physical body.

ANOTHER PHASE The framework that has always existed within your energetic field will move into another phase of transmutation, as a higher electrical vibration flows within your field to allow you to stabilize within the expanded realm connections. This can be set in motion through conscious re-engagement and activation of the sacred heart. Doing this, you set in motion the recreation and re-definition of yourself through your own conscious choice action of realignment to Home through your heart. Powerful energetic waves are being manifested daily across your Earth plane to create a disintegration of the density. These waves are literally crashing within the environment of Earth, unearthing the holding of illusion and simultaneously revealing higher paths of opportunity. These paths are being forged open to support you in this awakening step. The gateway created by the network grid has now been fully established and anchored to support you in the next step of rebirth. The network continues to flourish, the frequency accelerating its impact as the light builds in momentum, creating an illuminated path for you to engage. DEEP EMOTIONS This building of light is pulling up the deep emotions that have been held within individuals and communities. Thirddimensional drama continues to create deep impacts within your lives. This creates confusion and unsettles the ego mind, bringing a great opportunity as your ego mind is held in confusion. This space

allows deep and permanent changes for you to unfold within your relationship with your own human aspect. This is the time for you to let go of the old outworn cycles in your life. Play witness to the birth of wholeness within you. We liken this to the sun coming over the horizon. Within this environment, your heart can experience reconnection to light and Truth. Allow, let go and open to the revelations of peace and Truth that can be illuminated within. As you choose to open up into your heart, you enter a new phase of your destiny. Let go and open into your rebirth. Within the light, Truth can unfold and awaken through you. This space is accessible for you to let go and witness yourself within this higher evolutionary environment. This opening is heralding in remembering. Your heart’s makeup carries a unique Divine frequency, and you are able to access this unique song of light. This is a sacred design, a flow of light that will cascade you into an arena of Truth, love and reconnection to a higher learning. You have always held the unique design of Truth within your multidimensional heart. We liken this design to a specific song resonance. The vibration of you opens a pathway that enables you to link into a higher level of consciousness in communion with the light. The sacred element of your nature can begin to be self-realized though the opening up of this unique design, which holds your signature of God light energy. Remember, you are recognized throughout the Universe by this signature song. As you resurrect your signature light within your heart, you are re-established within the sacred God consciousness collective within the Universe.

SUPPORT ENERGY The network grid carries support energy for the reconnection that resides within you by holding the energetic mirror of your God light outwards to support your

realignment. This mirror is designed to assist you in recognizing and remembering the essence of you. The network grid is designed to stabilize you when you activate your reconnection. This re-emergence within your heart allows you to fully recalibrate your creation light within the systems of your physical and energetic body. Your physical body will undergo rapid change during this phase of transformation. Your nervous system is being recalibrated to support the frequency of your heart’s multidimensional reopening. Your design song is electrical in nature, and as the frequency of your God song releases within your systems and becomes absorbed within you, the cells of your body — the heart cells — begin to actively pulse the unique design frequency of your heart outwards. Your brain synapses will transform as you activate this reconnection, unravelling the multidimensional function of your nervous system and spinal fluid, recalibrating the frequency held within the sacrum and brain stem. Your brain function is to be repurposed to respond on a multidimensional level to initiate and work with your heart song frequency. Who are you within this frequency song of your heart? As you reopen the doorway to your heart, you can emerge within the multidimensional framework of your higher consciousness, knowing that your God light is fully intact just beyond the veils of your heart, in perfect flow. There are no restrictions or specific agendas placed between you and the full reconnection to your sacred nature. At this moment, an access is being held wide open by the new framework within your energetic field, and your heart creates the opening for you to step through and BE.

HIGHER PATH You have choices at this juncture. You get to choose to take the higher path of reconnection to the sacred aspect of your sacred self, which is an essential component of your natural makeup. This era of the “New Dawning” is before you. It’s another turn in the wheel of your homecoming!

Those of you who have already begun the process of re-engagement within your multidimensional heart hold the potential to access the full reflection of the multidimensional reality framework that is reopening. These simultaneous reality profiles have been in existence within the planet for lifetimes. These profiles give you a deeper insight and ability to reconnect into your heritage makeup, within your family of light. Access to them aligns you to another aspect of your potential power. You open up into realignments, to the natural higher state of your consciousness. By choosing, you rejoin the vast communion telepathic settings that exist with your family of light. This is your heritage. You have always been a part of these sacred communities, which exist within your resident Universe. By shifting your awareness into your heart, you choose your multidimensional self yourself within your heart space. Let go of any agenda and BE. This next step of your process is about opening into a simple uncluttered moment, void of any “doing.” This process of returning is about BEING and letting go within the vast expression of your heart. Don’t try and engage within the heart. Simply open your awareness and witness the space that is unfolding for you.

I AM The words I AM are the most simple and impactful. These words are Divine in nature, as they create a segment of light that naturally realigns you deeper to your heart song. The frequency that is created by your words, I AM, engages fully within the heart cells. The action of these words, I AM, creates openings of your unique energetic design. I AM forms the essential opening of a pure moment within destiny through the reconnection to a telepathic communion with your heritage, your family of light. Through a holy frequency engineered by the network grid, the magnetic core of the Earth and the shifting rotation of the planet, a completely different reaction is created through the I AM vibration within your heart than previously experienced.

This is the action of your pure magic being recreated through you at this time in your destiny. This magic is the reopening of the multidimensional potential of an uncorrupted, uncluttered space — bringing forth reconnection within your heart and anchoring and aligning you to the frequency of Truth. I AM activates Truth. These words state, “I AM part of the Oneness. I AM the state of God consciousness.” Claim the state of never being separate from God and always being an extension of the light of Truth. As you anchor within your heart and anchor these words, you set in motion a higher level of the transmutation process within you.

THE PROCESS Utilize the conscious breath, in and out of the mouth. This breath supports your process, bypassing the ego mind: 1. Hold your heart, your full chest area, resting both palms of your hands on your chest. 2. Utilize the conscious breath, bringing it like a soft wind into your hands, into your heart space. 3. Open your awareness within the space. You may feel, see or sense the space. Bring the conscious breath into the space expanding your connection. 4. Bring in the words I AM within the space. Use the conscious breath to let go and align to the activation. Repeat I AM as many times as you feel is appropriate. Open within these unfolding steps of this sacred process within. We witness you as you step forward into the light of your destiny. Blessings, The Pleiadians. a CHRISTINE DAY is a leading spiritual teacher, healer, channel and author. The Long Walk from Darkness to Light STEVEN BOYD I RECALL HEARING A saying many years ago that stuck in my mind and heart and resonated within my soul. It goes like this: “Spirit sleeps in the mineral, dreams in the plant, walks in the animal and thinks in man.” It has a deep metaphysical meaning that goes beyond words strung together on a piece of paper, just as we are much more than the trillions of atoms formed together to make our bodies. Many religions and more than a billion people believe in karma and reincarnation as a means for each soul to evolve as they traverse a path over many, many lifetimes, from a simple form of creation such as the mineral to a plant to an animal and eventually to a human. If this is the case, it’s easy to see how it could take many lifetimes for a soul in its current human state to evolve back to its awakened perfection and freedom in God. If we look at our own state of consciousness and that of the collective consciousness of the planet, which is currently in a sorry state of affairs, it’s both powerful and humbling to consider. A great Indian saint said, “Saints are sinners who never gave up.” Humankind has been evolving over many tens of thousands of years, from the Cro-Magnon man to modern man. Go back even further to the Neanderthal man and it’s clear to see that his way of life and belief system was even simpler than that of the average man during the Dark Ages. Look at an average human life from birth to death and you can clearly see that each person evolves to a certain degree based on various factors, such as parenting, schooling, society, mental habits and a willingness to grow and change. These changes may seem small for some people, but they are still advancing from darkness to light, as we all are. Each of us tends to grow and evolve at a different rate of speed. Each of BY

us seems to have our own unique karmic path of evolution. In truth, no person is better than the next. We all have the divine spark of God’s perfection within us. In some people who display greed, anger, dishonesty or other tendencies that may appear violent or even evil in nature, it may not seem the case, but the divine spark is there — just waiting to awaken under the right circumstances. If we are honest with ourselves, we all are trying to break free of the effects of ego, bad habits or darkness. Struggling against this darkness or limitation is our divine birthright. Our souls constantly are pushing us to awaken from the dreams of limitation and despair. Make no mistake, everyone is struggling in some way — and everyone wants to be happy, free and at peace within. One of my favorite sayings, from the movie Dune, is, “The sleeper must awaken.” In essence, the divine God spark within us wants nothing more than for us to awaken to our divine birthright of happiness, freedom and joy. Isn’t it a beautiful thought to know that God has encoded within us His DNA of perfection? How do we go about the transformation to uncover our sleeping perfection? As the Chinese proverb says, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Since our atoms and cells are always in a state of motion, we may as well help them by taking conscious steps from our current state of darkness, “which may take many different forms,” to the light of God’s love, truth and inner freedom. Since this is our divine birthright, we should do everything we can to take advantage of our time left on this planet to cultivate it. Forging ahead by living a God-filled life is like investing money each day of your life, and as an adult realizing that your investment provided a large sum to make your future more secure and bright. Of

course, we can’t take money or anything material with us when it’s time to leave these bodies, but the investment we make to our spiritual and mental health go with us from this life to the next, helping to shape a much better existence for ourselves in the future. So, whether you believe that we have only one life or multiple lifetimes, it matters not. Either way, if you make the spiritual effort to change today, you’ll become a much happier person and will be pleasing to God as a channel for his goodness. As a great yogi-saint said, “It’s all about God’s Grace.” If we are sincere in our daily effort to improve, both spiritually and mentally, and help others in need along the way, we make ourselves open to receive His glorious grace. God’s grace can move mountains and destroy any darkness, bad karma and disease from our minds and hearts so that we can flow with His love. His grace can speed up our evolution and help us to become the true sons and daughters of spirit. How do we go about this? We start today by asking God for Divine aid and guidance in all our affairs and try to live as the great saints do through daily prayer, meditation, right thinking, clean healthy living and mutual respect for all forms of life, knowing that they too are on the long march from darkness to light. Getting acquainted with yoga and meditation by reading a book or going to a class can be a great start to the spiritual path, as it feeds the spirit, mind and body and promotes peaceful living. Yoga is not just about breathing and stretching, it’s an age-old science that brings with it positive transformational change to each person who sincerely follows its path. Yoga comes in a variety of forms to choose from to serve all walks of life. For myself, I was guided at a young age to the book Autobiography of a Yogi, by Paramahansa Yogananda. This book profoundly changed the course of my life. After reading it, I sought out the teachings of Self Realization Fellowship, which was founded by Yogananda in 1920. He was one of the first Yogis to come to America from India. This path changed my life at an early age from one of suffering and despair to one of happiness and freedom. Whatever path you feel guided to follow in this lifetime, know that God is behind all true paths, and they all eventually merge back into Him. Always remember this: happiness is not just a destination, it’s in our DNA and it’s available with each breath of life! a STEVEN BOYD is a yogi and writer. Common Misperceptions about Sensitive People BY THERESA CHEUNG An excerpt from The Sensitivity Code

I SINCERELY WANT TO HELP gentle people recognize their own true worth and feel empowered and at peace, rather than fragile and conflicted and ashamed of feeling things deeply. I would like to offer gentle people coping tools to help them manage their emotions and navigate insensitive environments. I would also like to help sensitive people identify the red flags of toxic relationships. It is a truth universally acknowledged that sensitives typically attract self-serving narcissists and energy vampires into their lives, and in some cases, it can take their forgiving hearts a long time to wake up to the damaging emotional abuse. Last, but by no means least, I also want to eliminate damaging misconceptions about being sensitive.

SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT Here are the most common and frustrating misconceptions about sensitivity or being sensitive, followed by some facts that challenge them: • Sensitive people are shy and introverted. There are sensitive extroverts, too — about 30 percent of sensitives are extroverts. • Sensitives are fragile, ineffective “snowflakes.” Many defining characteristics of sensitive people, such as their empathy, passion and creativity, make them exceptional business leaders or influencers on the world stage, for example, Walt Disney, Jacinda Arden, John Lennon and Princess Diana to name but a few. • Sensitive people are pushovers who have no firm convictions of their own. Empathy is a defining characteristic of sensitives, but it is not an endorsement of another person’s viewpoint; rather, it’s simply respecting and listening to that viewpoint. • Sensitivity is a women’s issue. Up to 50 percent of sensitives are men. • Gay men are prone to being sensitive. This is a social stereotype that equates being gay with being more feminine and, as stated above, sensitivity is not a feminine issue. • Highly sensitive people are prone to depression and anxiety. There may be an increased risk of anxiety and depression, but it is important to point out that depression is a serious medical condition that needs treatment and many factors contribute to the likelihood of depression, including past trauma, chemical imbalances and genetics. Lack of self-awareness, whether a person is highly sensitive or not, can also increase the risk. • There is a strong link between hypersensitivity and autism. Those with autism may well

have sensory issues, for example, finding things like bright lights or loud noises overwhelming, but this does not mean that everyone with sensory issues has autism. There are major differences between high sensitivity and autism, but chiefly autism comes with “social deficits” (less response in brain areas associated with empathy) and high sensitivity does not. • Sensitive people are too weak and selfdoubting to become effective leaders, stand up to narcissists or succeed in a harsh and critical world. Not so. Once they are armed with self-awareness and the tools and techniques to turn their gentleness into a strength, sensitive people are an unbeatable force. • Sensitive people are empaths because they feel what others feel, but not all empaths are sensitive. They soak up emotions, but not all the other stimuli from an environment as sensitives tend to do. • Sensitive people need to “toughen up.” They can’t, because being sensitive is who they are. They are born that way. I used to buy into all these negative associations — until I knew better. This is all this fake news, especially the notion that a sensitive person needs to “toughen up.” They simply can’t. It’s like telling someone who is taller than average that they should be shorter. Just as being tall is not a flaw, being sensitive is not a flaw. It is not an illness, or a choice people make, either. It is how they are born. According to experts, it is an innate trait with research indicating that at least three sets of genes may contribute to it. Some highly sensitive people may have all or some of these “sensitive” genes and, intriguingly, all three impact the brain and nervous system in some way.

FEELINGS AND SENSES Sensitive people are born to be gentle and to experience life on high alert through the lens of their feelings and senses. They are not better or worse than anyone else, just different. Although they may have traits in common, they are not all the same. Every sensitive person is unique, just as every person who is taller than average is unique. Indeed, the fact that the genetic coding for sensitivity continues to survive natural selection suggests that for evolutionary reasons, for the survival of the human race, it is beneficial that some people can see, feel and sense things others cannot. It offers an evolutionary advantage and exists and will continue to exist, because it is the one true force that drives humanity towards greater connection. Empathy, intuition, creativity, gentleness and compassion are personality traits that unite rather than divide, and they are all defining ➤ see SENSITIVE PEOPLE on p. 14 SEPTEMBER 2020 THE EDGE

Regaining Paradise BY PAUL CORSON An excerpt from Regaining Paradise

A MAJORITY OF US ON some level at times have felt a degree of inner unrest that seems to arise from a place deep within us. This unrest, I believe, is connected to our being unable to make sense of the human condition. We seem to be living inside an insulated bubble in the eye of a virtual storm. We go on with our lives, searching for answers that seem just beyond our grasp. We hunger for higher knowledge that can make our lives meaningful and whole. Sages over the years have said that the answers to the big questions for which we have long been searching are in plain sight. Some thinkers say that these questions are unanswerable, that they are unsolvable mysteries and are best left at that. Then again, if we were given reasonable answers to the big questions, would they meet our standards of proof? There is another puzzling aspect of this mystery: If the answers are in plain sight, why haven’t we discovered them? There’s an often-overlooked fact regarding truths. What you take note of, accept and honor is directed mainly on perception, the way you see the world, which arises from your particular take on life. Western society tends to see the world of people, objects and things as Aristotle did, as physical, material expressions. We are inclined to view the world as an extension of ourselves and of our material bodies. This ego-based point of view, called anthropomorphism, forms the basis of science.

Your perception provides the roadmap that you follow after birth, after being taken from the timeless dream-state of the womb-paradise. What we encounter after our birth drowns out the sweet memory of that earlier idyllic place. Technology in particular, especially electronics, affects you on a deep level. It fashions, depersonalizes and colors your world. The sounds and images on your screens and messages in the media dictate the steps you need to take to be welcomed into society. But membership in society comes at a price. The steps you’re advised to take have been devised by experts to influence and manipulate you. The theme is relentlessly drummed into you, and the steps and instructions continue all of your life. Yet, where is the bliss that you’re promised by the messengers on the screen? The more you consume, the further you’re removed from your former state of paradise. On a deep level, you sense this deception, the self-serving intrusion into your mind, and you act out, actively or passively. The infulence of the ego, although recognized only recently, has been the driving factor in the wars, racism, greed and divisiveness that drives wedges between us. The ego is also the unsettlling factor behind the inner turmoil, that lack of inner peace, that appears innate to humankind. Our inhumanity to one another seems to arise from our ego. But how could plain sight on its own change the traditional course and enable

SENSITIVE PEOPLE

continued from p. 13

traits of the highly sensitive individual. In a nutshell, we are all born with a unique genetic code. To identify whether a person or a child is highly sensitive, psychologists from the American Psychological Association use a special identification or measurement scale, which asks simple questions to identify highly sensitive traits. Examples include: Do the moods of others impact you? Are you aware of subtleties in your own environment? Do you often feel the need to withdraw? Are you easily overwhelmed? Are you highly sensitive to pain and hunger? However, according to Aron, all highly sensitive people, whether introvert or extrovert, possess four main traits, which can easily be remembered by the acronym DOES: D: Depth of processing — Highly sensitive people analyze everything, considering every possible scenario before making a decision. O: Overstimulation — They can easily get overpowered by sights, sounds and the environment they are in. E: Empathy and emotional responsiveness — They don’t just identify with what others are feeling, they feel it themselves. 1 4  WWW.EDGEMAGAZINE.NET

you to enjoy a more genuinely productive and fulfilling life? Throughout human history, sages and prophets have taught us that self-discover could engage us to see beyond the ego-based material worldview and permit us to become aware of truths that would free us from the treadmill of daily life. I have come to see a connectedness between my own mind journey with the “hero’s journey” of myth that Joseph Campbell spelled out in his work on the relationship between myths and modern society. It’s not that I have always thought of myself as a hero. Far from it. I have simply tried to lead a life that includes caring for and about others as a central component. Yet, my reflections on a series of experiences helped me realize that I needed courage to embrace the meaning of these experiences and learn how to explain it to others. I needed courage to travel into a realm that I was fortunate to glimpse early, as a child. It took courage to open myself to others and share what I’ve learned is the truth about our existence. I found that truth in my own journey in life, and my mission is to help you grasp that truth. a PAUL CORSON’S description of his otherworldly experiences have been featured in The Philadelphia Inquirer, and on local and national TV. As a pharmacist, Corson established a protocol for the treatment of HIV/AIDs. He received the 2000 Philadelphia Hero Award for his contributions in supporting AIDS survivors. S: Sensitivity to subtleties — They hear, see, feel and sense tiny details that others easily miss. The implication of Aron’s research is that the remaining 80 percent of the population do not possess the four defining DOES traits. I am not a scientist or a psychologist, but I have been writing about and collecting stories from sensitive people for decades now. I have come to the conclusion that although the remaining 80 percent may not display DOES traits as consistently or acutely as a person who is born highly sensitive, they still have the potential to manifest highly sensitive traits. Sensitivity can be triggered in anyone, whether diagnosed highly sensitive or not, by traumatic events, such as bereavement, heartbreak or other life crises, or simply by a sudden and unexpected desire to go within and find deeper meaning. a THERESA CHEUNG is a Sunday Times bestselling author. THE LOVE OF GOD DANIEL ROQUÉO LOVE MAY BE DESCRIBED as the full and total giving of oneself and of that which one has to give. No holding back, no conditions, no agendas. The love of God is given fully and freely, and as God is in each of us just as each of us is in God, the love of God intrinsically dwells within each of us. It is the very essence of who and what we are. Much like the sun. The sun sits in the sky giving and sharing of its gifts of warmth and luminosity. As it gives and shares, it does so without concern as to what it may get back in return, nor does it concern itself with whoever is receiving its gifts, or whether they like it or not. It gives and it shares fully and freely because that is what it does. Shining and glowing is the sun’s particular gift to give to the world. And so it gives. Or imagine if you will, a blackbird on an early spring morning, sitting on a branch delivering its beautiful gift of song to the world. No regard as to who is listening, BY

no thoughts as to what it may get back in return. Giving and sharing fully and freely. No holding back, no strings attached. This is love. This is the love of God. This is the love that we have come here to discover within ourselves. That we may cultivate it and learn to express it, in ever greater and grander ways. Relating this to us human beings and the interactions that we have with other individuals, we always want to seek to never withdraw our love from anyone. Now, compassion, as a very high form of love, may be described as the understanding of lack of understanding in another being, as well as in ourselves. Compassion is realizing that whenever another being does something hurtful or harmful, they are under the influence of the ego, ignorance, unconsciousness. In other words, in this moment they are lacking conscious understanding. And so we realize that we never need to take anything they do or do not do, personally. Whatever their actions, it has noting to do with us. They are under the influence of ignorance and we just happen to get in the

way of it — of the ego acting through the other being. And so, as awakening individuals, as we spiritually mature and move along the path of unfolding, we gradually learn not to get pulled in by the ego in ourselves that may be reacting to the ego in the other — that we may increasingly choose to respond with love, compassion and forgiveness. It is as Jesus was encouraging when he said: “Forgive them, for they know not what they do.” The ego is that part in us that gives rise to our thoughts, opinions, points of view, perceptions. It is the entity that snares us in thoughts about what should and should not be. It is the part within us that pulls us into victimhood and a sense of entitlement. What Jesus ultimately was saying was that a being that is identified with the ego knows not what they do, because it is not really them doing it. It is the ego doing it through them. It really is like sleepwalking. The individual appears to be awake but is really not, and so although they are always accountable for their actions, it is never personal. Understanding this allows for us to remain in the higher vibrations of love and compassion, even when faced with ignorance — that we may respond to the Divinity within them rather than reacting to the egoic or surface mind of them. From this perspective, we come to realize that we always want to choose to forgive (which is nothing but releasing all forms of negativity toward another being) the other, that we may continue to live in peace, joy, love and harmony — regardless of what another is doing or not doing. God in the Moment BY

RUTH CHERRY, Ph.D.

SO OFTEN WE FEAR vulnerability and want to insure that it never recurs. We might say, “If I were (fill in the blank) then I wouldn’t feel (fill in the blank).” Perhaps it is: “If I were married, I wouldn’t struggle with this deep fear that no one could ever love me.” Or, “If I had money, no one would laugh at me.” Or, “With enough education, I will be as good as everyone else.” Those thoughts are logical and all that our controller minds can do with our feelings, but feelings are to be felt, not managed. It’s terrifying and overwhelmingly painful to feel, “I’m not good enough to be loved.” Of course, we want to escape that experience, but it is an experience. Experiences exist in the moment. They are not terminal judgments. Feeling afraid of being unlovable is a momentary experience. “This second, I am overwhelmed by my fear.” Okay, breathe, stay focused on that feeling, and allow.

HEAL AND PASS When we breathe and accept our feelings without struggle or judgment or interference from our controller minds, they heal and pass. Feelings are just feelings, always in process. Feelings move. They heal and pass naturally unless we interfere in that process by thinking. No matter what is in our feeling realm, if we acknowledge it, feel it, keep breathing, and allow, it will heal and pass. Why do we fear our vulnerability so much

that we block this natural flow? My guess is that it’s because we’re not anchored in that central place of peace that exists absolutely in each of us. At our core, we’re one with the greater reality. In our place of peace, we know we are protected. We know we always have a home and that whatever we need will be provided. And when we know that, we also know that the feeling of this moment will pass and we will be fine. It comes down to who or what is your god. Using the word god doesn’t matter. Dogma is irrelevant, and structure is only external. Having a peaceful core inside us makes life experience meaningful and, thus, tolerable. The peaceful core offers us an anchor. Anchoring doesn’t happen from our heads or our thoughts. No one can give you an anchor. An anchor inside develops from the experiences of staying present to yourself no matter what. Whatever feeling, whatever thought, whatever impulse, we stay present to ourselves. We stay focused and open to everything going on inside us and we pay attention. I don’t know of a better way to build self-esteem. By practicing presence, we give ourselves more than we can get from another’s adulation. We can’t take in from outside us that kind of solidity. We stay with ourselves no matter what. And we confirm ourselves. By our presence we say, “I know I am worth love,” for we are practicing loving ourselves. We treat ourselves gently and,

yet, we know every ounce of what it is to be us — the fear and the shakiness and the immaturity — and still we say, “I choose to be on my own side.” What more could we want from anyone?

PEACEFUL CORE A peaceful core exists for every human, but we have to work to find it. It abides under the struggles and the mind’s activity and the distracting busyness and the compulsivity. That peaceful core is our essence and the only place where we feel satisfied. Efforting, amassing, achieving and competing doesn’t bring us peace. And yet, those are the gods many of us choose. Your god is whatever is the basis for your decisions. Do you make choices you hope will make you look good to others? Do you make choices in favor of denial of your hurt? Do you choose to remain aloof and unknown? That tells you what is your god. When you make choices from that place of peace at your core, then that is your experience of God. And like all experiences, it is momentary. So God becomes an experience of the moment. Always you have a choice. Do you want to be open to your inner world? Do you want to know your oneness and your perfect center? Do you want to operate from that deep place of peace? Or do you prefer busyness and distraction and appearance? It’s your choice. a RUTH CHERRY, Ph.D., is the author of Living in the Flow, Practicing Vibrational Alignment, Accepting Unconditional Love, Transformation Workbook, and Open Your Heart. BE AUTHENTIC

How to create a loving relationship with yourself, with others and with life BY SWAMI DHYAN GITEN

TO BE AUTHENTIC MEANS to remain true to your own being. Be truthful to yourself. You are not needed to change others or try to teach others according to your ideas, expectations or ideology. If you change, that is enough. How to remain true? There are four things about authenticity: remain true to your own being and listen to your inner voice; learn to listen to yourself and your feelings; learn to trust yourself; and learn to love and accept yourself. • Remain true to your own being and listen to your inner voice — otherwise your whole life will be wasted. The first thing is your being. Don’t allow others to manipulate and control you. Many people try to control you and want to change you according to their ideas, ideals and ideologies. Remember: be true to your inner voice. To be authentic is to be true to oneself. Always listen to the inner voice, and don’t listen to people who want to control and manipulate you. Just close your eyes and listen to the inner voice. That is what meditation is all about: learning to listen to your inner voice. • Learn to listen to yourself and your feelings. The hypocrisy of society is its desire to teach you to not listen to yourself, to 1 6  WWW.EDGEMAGAZINE.NET

your feelings, and to not show your true face. So each individual becomes like an island, closed and separated. From early childhood, we have been taught to suppress the real. In unconscious and mechanical ways, we go on suppressing, without knowing what we are doing. Listen to the heart, and whatsoever is true, bring it out. And once you know how to be true, it will be so joyful and beautiful that you will never go back to being false. Be true to yourself: that is the basic responsibility towards yourself. You are answerable to your own being. This is the whole problem: how to be yourself. Then life becomes a beautiful mystery to be loved, and not a problem to be solved. • Learn to trust yourself. If you trust yourself, you can trust other people, and you can trust in existence. But if you don’t trust in yourself, then no other trust is possible. Society destroys your trust at the very roots. It does not allow you to trust yourself. Society teaches other kinds of trust: trust in the parents, trust in the church and trust in the state, but society destroys basic trust in yourself deliberately, because those who trust in themselves are dangerous for society. They are independent. Society needs dependent people, who are easy to manipulate and control. This is why

The Path of Love BY

SELAH GRENEWOOD

I ARRIVE WITH a charge. I can enrich your life if you are wise, or leave you bankrupt if you are not prudent. I permeate all public forums, appearing in every class, from the minority to majority, and can be found amid every religious sect. I am the cause of much contention. I am the seven deadly sins, reactive: I lust for disenfranchised families, I’m greedy for untenable friendships, I’m prideful of the preplanned violation; I sloth over inattentiveness. Who am I? Anger. The verb anger is from the Old Norse word meaning “grief.” When you escort anger, you are the bereaved, and mourn for a former state of equilibrium.

DISLOCATES US Anger both dissociates and dislocates us. As is spiritually understood, the heart advocates free “love” and its movement. When anger consumes you, your range of opportunity and presence narrows. You cannot see outside the self-centered box that says, “I was wronged.” Many who experience anger “fall” into two categories: • The type A personality who cannot accept criticism or disorganization in any form, and who frequently gives the same. This type likely has repressed anger, and is a workaholic to the point of ill health. • The perfectionist or workaholic, who is prideful as compensation, and for whom

any self-referencing mirror for proactive change is lacking and rejected. Such a person is incompatible with the solution, latent and constructive though it is, and for which, even you, present. In this setting, anger is too self-involved to view its action from a place of critique and improvement.

NEGATIVE HABITS What we need is the constructive angle. Here, our negative habits are examined and reconstructed; a more positive mindset established. Anger’s mechanism is now removed from personal recrimination. We are curious as to its cause and remorseful by its effect. The question arises: Is it more beneficial for our health to concentrate on the feather fluff, which is ephemeral, or the “heart of the matter?” Remember, anger needs an angle to grow. We learn strategies in proper selfcare and “right” conduct, when we evaluate our response, and remove that which is not of necessity. With the constructive angle, there is range, its host of solutions, and the freedom of an unaffected, though conscientious, lifestyle. Here are some insights and remedies you can begin today. They will help you increase your wellbeing and maintain a positive outlook. Give in love, you never fail. Hate weakens; to hate is to mourn for love not reciprocated. Too much time is wasted attempt-

society destroys the trust in yourself, because an individual who does not trust himself is shaky and afraid, and then he is controllable. Start trusting yourself. It is the fundamental lesson. • Learn to love and accept yourself. If you love and accept yourself, that is the beginning of accepting all. Then all is good as it is. In that experience life takes on a new joy, a new gratefulness. If you reject yourself, you are rejecting existence. If you accept yourself, you have accepted existence. Then life is good, and you feel grateful. Then whatsoever happens is good, because it happens out of the whole. But you have been conditioned for centuries not to love and accept yourself. Nobody has ever told you that you are good as you are. Once you are incapable of loving yourself, you will never be able to love anybody. You can love others only if you are able to love yourself. A person who loves himself sooner or later starts overflowing with love. If you don’t love yourself, nobody else will ever be able to love you. You cannot love a person who hates himself. How can you love a person, who is condemning himself? He cannot love himself, so how can you love him. He will not believe you. He cannot allow anybody to love him, because he knows that he is unworthy of love. And you know what you are: worthless. That is what you have been told by parents, priests and politicians. Nobody has ever

ing to change another’s behavior. You never will. Change yours. Only that which promotes health is worth visiting; everything else is compulsion.

SELF AND OTHERS Instead of measuring the supposed difference between self and other — which is not lack within you, but possibility, for what you see in another, you contain somewhere — measure harmony. Study universal laws, including the “law of abundance,” “law of attraction,” “law of cause and effect” and “law of compensation.” Know that with your every action and word you are setting into motion a reality that is favorable to your life or not. Anger has an age and progression. Its motion can be measured, and an angle of perspective and centrality formed. As the physicist knows the moving body with its placement, station and unfoldment, look then at anger as a force of creation which you, as universal designer, can fashion into peace. Lastly, don’t forget to celebrate “World Heart Day” on September 29. When we view anger as a learning tool, our personal relationship with self and others is improved and we maintain a happy, healthy heart. With love, from my mine to yours. a SELAH GRENEWOOD is a librarian and teacher living in Florida. accepted you as you are. Nobody has given you the feeling that you are loved and respected, that you are needed and that this existence will miss you, that without you this existence will not be the same. Without you, this existence will lose some joy, love, beauty, truth and poetry. Love and accept yourself, and relax into your being, for you are cherished by the whole. Once you start feeling this love and respect of the whole in you, you will start growing roots in your being. Only then can you love other people — and love the trees and the animals. Love is only possible when there is a deep love and acceptance of oneself, of the other and of the world. And then you will be surprised: life is always ready to shower you with gifts. Life is always ready to give abundantly, but we cannot receive it, because we don’t feel that we are worthy of receiving it. Accept yourself, love yourself, for you are God’s creation. a

Divination Tools are All Around Us BY

LIA HUBBARD

Have you ever been called a tool? I have, and I don’t think it was a compliment. But as a tool (a channel), we all use our body as a divination tool with our “gut” feelings. We are all intuitive. Many intuitive readers use divination tools such as tarot cards, runes or pendulums to receive further accuracy and confirmation on the intuitive hits they are already receiving. We are electro-magnetic, multidimensional beings, and our very presence affects the outside world. Our presence and emotionality can shift the mood of a room. I was told once that tarot cards and runes pick up on the energy of the emotional imagination of the person being read. What an intuitive sees is not the future but trajectory packets. The future teeters with different probabilities, and based on thought and action we shape probabilities. But, the closer you get to the event, the stronger the probable outcome. However, the future is very malleable and you can change the trajectory of your future by thought and feeling alone. We are never stuck. What’s great about divination tools is they give us clues to what we are creating — whether we are using cards or pendulums or just looking for clues in our outside world — advice and synchronicities we come across — to give us guidance. There is no coincidence. These are events that “coincide.” We do control our own destiny. Unfavorable readings can simply mean we are anxious. What is anxiety? Negative emotional imagination thrown into the future. If you get a “bad” reading, you can always change the direction and trajectory. Throwing the emotion of excitement into an imagined future does bring an outcome to you faster. It has a high vibrational frequency, and therefore works as a conduit to bring that imagined event to you. a LIA HUBBARD loves people. Her wish is to lift people up. White Light Allies Spirit Leaves BY JANET MICHELE RED FEATHER An excerpt from the upcoming book, Elegant Empaths EMPATHIC PEOPLE FIND it easier than most to accept the existence of things unseen. No wonder so many empathic people are drawn to divination in all its forms: Tarot, pendulums, scrying, tea leaves and the like. My preference is for the Tarot. I currently have a collection of decks that occupy a large, deep shelf in the living room. Little did I know that what began as a curiosity would ultimately lead to contact with the Higher Guides. I began reading Tarot when I was 18. In my junior year of college, we went on a trip to the UK entitled “Literary London.” For a dozen luxurious days, we sauntered about London, shopping and visiting museums. We enjoyed a bus tour of Stratford-UponAvon. Perhaps the best part for this troupe of English majors was a trip to Penguin Books, a four-story architectural gem occupying an odd-shaped corner of London. I entered the store, dreaming I would never leave. There were point-of-purchase displays, one of them featuring an array of recent paperbacks and beautiful little boxes with art-deco designs on the cover. I decided to purchase one of these clever boxes without knowing fully at the time to what I had been drawn. I had not yet heard of Tarot cards, much less A.E. Waite and Pamela Coleman Smith, author and illustrator of the famous Rider-Waite deck. When we returned to the States, I unpacked the cards. After trying them out on myself, I read for my friend, Robyn. I would spread a scarf on the floor, lay out the cards in a cross and stave pattern, and light a candle. To enhance the ambiance, I wore a scarf and earrings. Initially, I had to look up the meaning of each card; after a while, I was familiar with most of the symbols and divinatory meanings. I noticed that, with the Celtic Cross arrangement, a kind of story would emerge, culminating in an ultimate bit of guidance. I’d read books on the Tarot and adopted a series of principles that resonated with my own core values. For instance, I never use the cards to predict death, illness or calamitous results. I only use them to alert people to possible influences and a possible outcome. In my travels, I came across another reader who suggested I try reading intui-

tively. She had learned from an instructor who challenged her one day, saying, “Throw the book away. Just read—without the book!” She then had me read for her, her husband and their friend, all without consulting the book. I did as she had suggested—and all were astonished at my accuracy! Another milestone was in the kitchen of my first publisher. She allowed me to read for her and her staff. We would clear the table and light whatever white candle was available. With eyes closed, I would take a deep breath, exhale and quietly call in the Beings of White Light to guide us. I do not know exactly when I started doing this, or even what prompted me to do so, but I’ve made that a practice ever since. The first time I did that, the publisher and her editor exclaimed almost simultaneously, “Wow. Did you feel the energy shift?” My journey with the Tarot has brought me into a deeper connection with the Beings of White Light. They are more than a mere abstraction or fanciful construction of the mind. Their beautiful, loving, gently supportive energy is available to all — to anyone with a genuine desire to understand life more deeply and the courage to ask for guidance where it is needed. Through my encounters with these magical cards, I have come to view the readings as offering sort of a little “road map of the soul.” Each reading is vibrant and viable within the time it is given. The more readings I perform, the more clearly I understand my role in all of this. I am not a forecaster, predictor or prognosticator. If I remain focused enough, however, I can serve as a skilled, articulate and compassionate vessel of Divine guidance. a JANET MICHELE RED FEATHER, J.D., M.A., is a ceremonial singer who has learned over 60 traditional songs in Mandan and Lakota and sings in nine different languages. A regular columnist for The Edge, she has also appeared in Psychic Guidepost, FATE Magazine and Species Link. Your Built-in Divination Tool BY

JESSICA L. HANSON

THE BEST DIVINATION TOOL I’ve ever owned is my body. Since I carry it with me everywhere I go, all the time, it is easy to use and as accurate as I need it to be. Nothing is 100 percent all the time. For the best accuracy, I find it helps to be in a positive state of mind. Before I ask any questions, I take a moment to clear my mind and be sure of what I am asking. From time to time it is good to begin by reaffirming your “Yes” and “No.” My “Yes” is usually tipping backwards and my “No” is tipping forwards, but this can change from time to time. Another thing I check is, why am I asking this question? Do I already know the answer? I have found over the years that my desire can override the results very easily. So, before I ask a question, I pause for a moment to check if I already have a preconceived desire and how strong it is. I know I can overrule my own better judgment if I want to, but the point of divining is to ask without a preconceived opinion. When using my body as a divination tool, it is a multi-purpose Swiss army knife! The most used tool is the gut feeling — that first impression you get when you meet someone or enter a place. It’s the gut feeling that prompted me to write this article. The second most-used divination tool? My ears. I am listening to the sounds around me — animals, traffic and people. Are they peaceful and making the normal sounds of life, or are they alarming and disturbed? The use of listening as divination also is helpful while shopping. Have you ever purchased extra items you hadn’t intended to or impulse-shopped? This is usually due to the background music playing in the stores. When I walk into a store, the first thing I do is listen for the background music they have playing. Once I am aware

of the message it is sending, then I have a choice of whether or not to let it into my space. If not, then I block it out and play my own internal music, which keeps me on task. Another important divination tool is taste. If my body does not want something, I know the moment it touches my tongue! But the divination tool of the tongue also can be deceptive at times; it loves chocolate, chips and other things that are not good for me, so I have to use it with caution! Then we come to the eyes, which see both good and bad, like and dislike. At times I really need to work hard to see the good in something, but if I pause and refocus, I can usually find it. The eyes are intertwined into all the other uses of divination. When I am unsure of my answer, I will take a moment to notice what my eyes are seeing right in front of me; oftentimes this is the answer. For example, I asked, “Should I write this article?” My eyes are seeing newspapers and magazines full of articles. I think it is an obvious “Yes.” Or, “Should I eat chocolate while I’m writing this article?” My eyes focus on a magazine about healthy living, so maybe just a small piece for now. I have used willow sticks, hand saws, crystals, needle and thread, copper rods, tea leaves, tarot cards, and even my computer mouse as divination tools, but my favorite

remains my body. It really is a Swiss army knife of divining options! If I am unsure of an answer, I can easily look, taste, smell, hear or feel what the answer is. As far as divining for other people, I take the extra time to teach them how to use their body, instead of the highly obvious arm-wrenching, finger-twisting techniques of kinesiology. Why does the person next to me at the store need to know I’m divining to see which product is best for me? Besides, if I divine for them, I have to step into their energy. I don’t know about you, but these days I like to keep my energy to myself! I need all the positive vibes and thoughts I have just to keep the inundation of worldly garbage out! Teaching another human about their body and the energy it carries boosts both of us and raises the vibrational level around us in this negative world. And who knows, the next person to walk through that area may feel this vibrational shift and be positively changed, as well. a JESSICA L. HANSON, is often described as an “old soul” because of her many experiences, which leave even the experts wondering. She had a near-death experience in 2006 which drove her studies deeper than ever. She is a compassionate hypnotherapist, a self-taught herbalist, who has walked the road of widowhood and is an avid volunteer. Her love of turtles is contagious! T H E I C H I N G & YO U BY

CAROLE HYDER & LISA JANUSZ

THE I CHING IS a Chinese divination tool that has been around for thousands of years. It has such a rich history, and was written so long ago, that the translations are many and varied. One thing that is common, however, is that whatever your question, the I Ching will provide an answer. Knowing what we know about the Chinese way, it’s not surprising that, like Yin and Yang, and Feng Shui, the I Ching is about causality and chance. Transformation is an enduring theme. I Ching means “Book of Changes,” which may actually limit the perception of what the process can do. It isn’t just a path to change but a way to transform, an inner shift. Typically, a reading reveals an outer action which leads to inner clarity. The beauty of the I Ching is that it reveals patterns in the universe and underscores that everything is evolving, growing and changing. Although it seems chaotic, the pattern of the universe has an order and rhythm to it, which a reading will determine based on your inquiry. Carol Anthony, an I Ching expert, refers to the I Ching as the Sage, someone who informs us when we’re contradicting a cosmic pattern. Using the I Ching requires a level of commitment and trust. Someone looking for a quick answer may be disappointed; someone who doesn’t reflect back may miss the nuanced message it gives. That’s because the I Ching, like many other divination tools, does not provide “yes” or “no” answers; it provides a message that requires thoughtful reflection. How the I Ching works is by “throwing” coins, or pulling colored beads or buttons. For coins, any will do, although for us, we like to use old or replicated ancient Chinese coins because of the connection to its history. Using any of these methods will provide a pathway by which heaven communicates to humanity, providing divine insight into the issue you may be grappling with. How a question or situation is phrased is a crucial part of accessing information. It won’t give you a definitive answer; instead, it offers options, different perspectives and new patterns to think about. Asking “Should I take this new job?” will be hard to answer, whereas “What is the energy around taking this new job?” will provide more insight. Because it is translated text, you might have to sit with the interpretation to find the message within. But if you’re in need of some direction, it’s a great resource to consider when making decisions. 2 0  WWW.EDGEMAGAZINE.NET

Whatever method you use (coins, beads or buttons), they will reveal yin and yang lines that translate into trigrams, which are then added together to reveal a hexagram. The hexagram reveals a “number” (1 through 64). Reading about that number in an I Ching book will (hopefully) reveal a relevant message. Using the I Ching can be eye opening. For example, you might be struggling with the next step in your career or in a relationship. You might be so emotionally involved that you don’t know, or can’t hear, guidance from yourself (your gut), or other spiritual realms. The I Ching can be a guide for you during those times. Here’s a personal example of how it can work. Lisa asked about returning to a company for some consulting work. There was something “off,” so she checked in with the I Ching. The message was clear: seek other opportunities. A while later she heard that there was a company shake-up that affected the working environment, and being there surely would have affected her effectiveness and progress. For us and our students, it has provided

guidance on topics like relationships, moves, new jobs and new ventures. And the more you use it, the better (and easier) it becomes for you to decipher the messages. You begin to create a relationship. You have many options if you’d like to start using the I Ching. Most I Ching books come with directions, or you can find virtual classes. For those of us who use it regularly, we have multiple books to reference. Depending on the situation, one book might “speak” to us more than others. And it is quite possible that a different book will resonate the next time. With all that is going on, it seems the universe’s energy is shifting. If you are looking for some cosmic guidance, perhaps the I Ching can be a resource for you, too. a CAROLE HYDER & LISA JANUSZ are partners in the Wind & Water Center, an organization focused on empowering individuals to create change within themselves and their environments through virtual programs and classes using Feng Shui principles and other modalities. A W I S E TO O L FOR E M B R AC I N G CHANGE

BY

PAUL O’BRIEN

THE LAW OF IMPERMANENCE is one of the primary tenets of Buddhism. It describes how all forms change and come to an end…unavoidably and sometimes marvelously so. The story of the Buddha’s enlightenment included recognizing that everything is temporary and impermanent, that every relationship transforms at some point. It is a function of everything that exists to constantly be going through the process of changing. Paradoxically, change is the only constant in life, but we have trouble with this fact. The ancient Taoist wisdom system known as the I Ching, or Book of Changes — which has been a large part of my life’s work — is one of the world’s greatest spiritual tools for accepting and skillfully relating to change. Our natural resistance to aging and death makes the ego try to hold on to things. We either want to keep the things we like from changing or to make things change for the better. This general lack of acceptance is a basic cause of the suffering referenced by the Four Noble Truths, the suffering that is endemic to the human ego’s predicament. No matter the circumstances, they are always changing, and we are never going to be fully satisfied. The I Ching provides an antidote for our craving of control and is a channel for new insights and for sparking new thoughts through alternate ways of viewing things in life. If you become stuck, or too attached, to a certain outcome, the I Ching will correct that way of thinking to bring you more into alignment with the essence of impermanence, which is change. Richard Wilhelm, the renowned Western I Ching scholar, frequently lectured about the I Ching in the early 20th century. His book Lectures on the I Ching: Constancy and Change specifically addressed the

concept of impermanence, and it includes lectures given by Wilhelm from 1926-1929 — a period of great change and upheaval. Now, the world is in the midst of a global pandemic that is changing every aspect of modern life, so this wisdom is once again much needed. “All of us,” Wilhelm said, “are living now in a period of opposition: it is important that we may hope for the transformation of opposition into fellowship. In fact, this is precisely the importance of the world view described in the Book of Changes: there is no situation without a way out. All situations are stages of change. Therefore, even when things are most difficult, we can plant the seed for a new situation that will preserve within itself the present situation, though we must be capable of adapting and finding the proper attitude.” The Law of Impermanence is one of the hardest aspects of Buddhist teaching for the ego to feel comfortable with, as it so strongly prefers to control and resist. Throughout history, sages and emperors, military leaders and heads of state have all sought out the wisdom from divination systems to help guide their decisions when faced with life’s unruly river of change. Their goals may have been to hold on to power by making the right decisions and anticipating the change, or simply to find a way to cooperate with the rhythms of the time. Thankfully, the I Ching can help us accept current circumstances, while riding the waves of change for the most personal benefit and for the greater good.
Before cultivating a divination practice, it is

important to get clear about what you hope to gain. Put serious thought and energy into how you frame your inquiry, as well as how you will approach and interpret the reading you get. Let yourself be open to the wisdom of the reading that you receive. Many people consult the I Ching as a daily meditation in order to tap into the energies of the day, inquiring about no particular subject at all. When approaching the I Ching, it helps to begin with a meditation to create a calm state of receptivity to the wisdom you seek and to let go of attachment to receiving any particular answer. Given the pressure of decision-making in modern times, in addition to the extra anxiety of an uncertain pandemic, is it any wonder people are feeling overwhelmed right now? It’s hard enough to manage all the small details in life, but when you are faced with critical personal choices, the challenge of making the right decision can be intimidating. In cases like these, the I Ching experience can stimulate your intuition and provide refreshing new ways of looking at things to help you maintain your balance and your sanity. a PAUL O’BRIEN is an entrepreneurial strategist, philosopher and raconteur who invented divination software and created the world’s largest astrology and divination e-commerce business, Tarot.com. He is a sought-after advisor, interview subject and speaker, as well as author of The Visionary I Ching: A Book of Changes for the 21st Century and the Visionary I Ching app for smartphones (Indie Goes). His latest release is the Visionary I Ching card deck, available by Beyond Words Publishing. As executive director of the Divination Foundation, for 30 years Paul has hosted Pathways radio in Portland, Oregon, an interview program focused on personal and cultural transformation (podcasts at Divination.com and iTunes). No Rules, No Tools BY CHRISTINE

ST. GERMAIN

I’VE BEEN AN ACTIVE seeker since 1997 — and to one degree or another all my life. I had a client who owned the Crystal Buffalo, a shop like Mind Body Spirit that specialized in Southwestern American Indian artifacts. I chose a large quartz crystal, (or rather, it chose me), I twined a gold wire around it and used it for dowsing. I still have it. I’ve used essential oils, crystals, affirmations, even studied with masters, all with more or less satisfactory results, always learning more. Around 2006 I took the SelfIdentity Ho’oponopono training from Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len, learning to work at the level of “All that Is.” The training included using various methods for dowsing, especially “yes” or “no” answers to questions articulated using a swinging crystal, one of my first lessons in the 1990s. I started asking the question and I got this response: “You are the dowsing rod.” Not in words, but in a sentience, a feeling. So, I asked, “I don’t need this?” And I got, again in sentience, “Any of it.” I still buy crystals. I still like dowsing. I enjoy asking the questions, and that part of the process still is necessary a lot of the time because articulating the question is the dowser’s job so she knows the exact question the answer applies to. Remember that the “secret ingredient” to alchemy is always the alchemist. Keep the alchemist in you honed. Give it light. Your vibration is the most critical aspect of any device you can use for insight. If a crystal chooses you, it’s yours. Use it. Cherish it. It will perform loyally and splendidly for you. But if there comes a time where you believe you no longer need devices to point you in your direction, remember to believe in yourself. a CHRISTINE ST. Divination Tools for Modern Spiritual Practices BY MELISSA

LEWIS

THE FIRST TIME I USED a divination tool professionally was the first day of massage school. I feel fortunate that I was guided into a healing arts career as I was able to think of my energy as a tool from the beginning. I learned how to use my hands in different ways to soothe, ease and loosen trapped energy in my clients. I worked at luxury spas and resorts for many years, developing preferences for tools provided in my work environment. The main tool I use is essential oils. Essential oils are basically the immune system of a plant that a practitioner uses for therapeutic benefit. They have been used in this way for centuries. When the oil is inhaled, the scent molecules travel from the olfactory nerves directly to the brain. One of the main areas of focus for the scent is the amygdala, the emotional center of the brain. Offering a choice of oils to a client and having the client choose is actually an intuitive process. It offers an opportunity to a client’s psyche and gives him or her the ability to choose the oil that will best suit the highest need for the massage session. I enjoy working with oils because there is so much choice. I can experiment with single oils, mix two oils for added benefit or use multiple oils on different body parts for different effects. I may choose to use peppermint for congestion near the face or head and lavender on the body for relaxation. In my own home, I use aromatherapy diffusers each day. You can literally lift the mood of your home by using aromatherapy regularly. I also use stones and crystals in my profession. Anyone who does regular healing arts work should have black stones or crystals in the work area for personal protection. The stones should be thought of as sacred tools that complement the work of the provider by absorbing the negative energy brought in

by clients. These stones need to be cleaned in salt water and charged in the sun regularly. You should always use divination tools with intention. One example is to take a moment to honor the presence of the natural gift of the stones to benefit the provider, the client and the process of healing. I have several crystals at home for my personal use. Sometimes I carry them with me and sometimes I even sleep with them near me at night to amplify the power of a moon phase. The most advanced tool I currently use is a Tarot deck. A lot of freedom and power comes with a person’s ability to use this tool to support a personal spiritual journey. A huge amount of wisdom is available to a confident, experienced individual when using a Tarot deck. There is a learning curve to this art, but like anything, practice and regular use is a must. My advice is to buy a Trot deck and a book or be active in looking up the meanings of cards you pull for yourself as you relate the meaning to your own life, challenges, etc. In the beginning, using divination tools can sometimes feel awkward. The most important thing to remember any time you use these types of tools is simply intention. Your intention should be to use the tools for positive personal growth and expansion. You must respect the tool and be open to what you will learn in unique and mysterious ways. a MELISSA LEWIS is an author and Spiritual Healing Advisor. Intuitive Divination by Cup-stone Scrying BY JON G. HUGHES An excerpt from The Druidic Art of Divination

HERE WE SHALL EXPLORE the oldest, but now least-used form of Druidic divination: cup-stone scrying.
The focal point or portal for this ancient technique is the cup-stone, which is an ancient ritual artifact found not only in Wales and Ireland, but also in England, Scotland, much of Northern Europe, and as far afield as Scandinavia.
The oldest examples are identified as originating sometime during the Neolithic age, which dates them somewhere in the region of 10,200 BCE, over 12,000 years ago. However, the majority of examples have been dated to sometime around 4,000 BCE, making them at least 6,000 years old. As the name suggests, cup-stones, in this context, are medium-sized, smooth stones with a cup-shape hollowed out at the top. There are some instances where such stone hollows have been formed naturally, either by the motion of the sea or by river eddies, but the cup-stones we are considering are most definitely man-made for a specific use.
Known in the Irish tradition as “Bullaun” stones and in the Welsh tradition as “Cerrig Cwpan,” their significance (if not their precise use) extends from Neolithic times.
In general appearance, these stones may be thought to have been used as querns, for grinding grain, herbs or similar food preparation, but the locations at which most of these Bullauns have been discovered, such as high rocky outcrops and other ritual sites, makes their use for domestic tasks such as food preparation look unlikely. More significantly, the oral tradition of Druidic lore and long-standing local folklore of the region attaches spiritual or magical significance to the Bullaun. One such belief in the Irish tradition, that persists to the present day, is that the rainwater collecting in a stone’s hollow has healing and curative properties, and history tells us that the ritual use of some

a

Bullaun stones continued well into the Christian period and many are found in association with early Christian churches. It is also worth noting that a number of recumbent stones lying within stone circles in Ireland, Wales and England have cup-hollows carved into their surfaces. These recumbent stones were/are the focal point of the many workings and rituals that take place within the circles, further illustrating the use of cup-stones and cup-hollows as essential ritual artifacts. As the Christian saints entered the territories of the pre-Celtic tribes and encountered the Bullaun being used in Pagan ritual, they “demonized” the stones and condemned their use. They quickly renamed them “cursing stones” or “tormenting stones” and drew them into the confines of the newly built churches so that they could be closely supervised. Finding that their Christian converts still held on to many of their pagan beliefs and traditions, the Christian fathers worked to adapt and assimilate the “Old Ways” into their Christian practices. One of the many “rebranding” projects they undertook in their efforts toward religious syncretism was to invent a new history for the Bullaun, which now became “praying stones” and “blessing stones,” originating from a tale of an Irish saint, who, when dropped on his head as a child upon such a stone, became instantly saintly and at the same time his now saintly head created a hollow in the stone, which henceforth was destined to collect and retain healing rainwater with miraculous curative qualities.
We can observe this absorption of the Bullaun cup-stone into the early CelticChristian church with a prime example at Muckross Abbey, Killarney, Count Kerry. Topping the wall surrounding the cloister at the abbey is a smooth 12 inch-wide capping stone balustrade. At one side of the cloister’s rectangle we can see a cup, Bullaun, carved into the stone alongside a compass defining the Cardinal Points.
It may seem difficult to imagine that Pagan Druidic ceremonies (workings) were

actually being carried out regularly within the abbey’s cloister, but this layout is identical to that of a Druidic working stone, usually within a stone circle, and there are no known recorded Christian ceremonies that utilize these particular features. The Bullaun had found a new history and a welcome new home in the confines of the increasing numbers of Christian churches covering the landscape of Ireland and Wales. Such a stone “convert” is a Neolithic Bullaun at the ruins of Aghadoe Cathedral, the first Cathedral in Ireland, less than a mile from my home in County Kerry.
Many Bullaun were, and still are, used in conjunction with “cur(s)e” stones, small rounded stones placed inside the hollow of the Bullaun. These would be used by turning them while invoking an intention (a Druidic prayer) or, more often, while focusing the senses on a divination working. It would also be common to add essential oils, other oils or even butter to the hollow to create an unctuous, sensuous quality as the stones are turned within the Bullaun, relaxing the diviner and strengthening their bond with the stones during the working.
In Cornwall, another area of Druidic influence, Bullaun have been discovered that are unmistakably womb shaped and have a distinct channel carved in the position of the birth canal. The tradition tells of the use of these “womb stone” Bullaun in fertility rituals and birthing rites in Wales and Ireland, as well as on the Cornish peninsula in the UK. a JON G. HUGHES is part of a lineage of Druids that has been practicing for five generations in a remote area of Wales. He teaches the tradition at his home in Ireland and gives workshops and seminars throughout Europe under his Welsh Druidic name, Cynon. He is the director of the Irish Centre for Druidic Practices and the author of A Druid’s Handbook to the Spiritual Power of Plants and Sexual Practices of the Druids.
