What Is Worship? by Sri Harold Klemp First of a three-part series What is the meaning of worship? I see it as anything that brings Soul closer to God. True worship brings Soul closer to God on Its own merits and never at the expense of someone else. You cannot bring yourself closer to God by hating others, even if you believe your anger is righteous. The relationship between Soul — which is you — and God is one of love. Where there is pure, absolute love, there is no room for anger of any kind. You can tell if a person practices true worship by how he treats others throughout the week. People are very good on their holy days, but the test of true worship is how they act the other six days of the week. For me, the test of true worship is whether or not a person has charity. By that I mean goodwill towards others. What is important in this life

is your relationship with God, and how you worship God truly. As you do this, it will show up in your daily life, whether it’s your traditional holy day or not. In the years I have been the spiritual leader of Eckankar, I have tried to show the members of ECK what is true prayer and what is not. True prayer lets things be. It shows trust that God has done things right. It says, “God, you’re doing a good job. Everything’s OK.” Wrong prayer is the kind that tries to change things, especially how other people behave. It also implies that God has fallen down on the job. No matter what religion you practice, it is important that you learn to listen. This is prayer in the true sense. True prayer is the art of listening to God. Just open your heart and listen to God. In ECK, one way to open the heart is to sing HU.   see Worship on p. 10

by Tim Miejan This morning after reading a few more pages of Glenn Greenwald’s, No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA, and the U.S. Surveillance State, I had to put the book down and ponder why mass surveillance of private cell and cyber communications from throughout the world, without probable cause, isn’t the most hotly debated topic in the nation. Americans over the age of 35, a recent KRC Research poll tells us, tend to view Snowden negatively — as a traitor and a spy who stole classified documents and should be punished for his actions. Snowden also is viewed more negatively by people in the four English-speaking countries — Canada, the U.K., Australia and New Zealand — that are part of the “Five Eyes” surveillance alliance, which work hand-in-hand with the NSA to gather intelligence from the general population. Since 2013 when Snowden’s documents were first revealed, public opinion of the former CIA employee and government contractor has swung from more positive to more negative. But younger Americans, millennials who live and breathe cyber communications — and people in Germany, Italy, France, the Netherlands and Spain — praise Snowden as a whistleblower, for bringing the surveillance state to our attention. Greenwald’s reporting calls into question President Obama’s desire to truly create a transparent government. The president has stated, “My administration is committed to creating an unprecedented level of openness in government…. Transparency promotes accountability and provides information for citizens about what their government is doing.” THE EDGE MAGAZINE 763.433.9291 P.O. And yet, Greenwald writes that “Obama’s administration has prosecuted more government leakers under the Espionage Act of 1917 — a total of seven — than all previous administrations in U.S. history combined.” When we are not free to question illegal practices that we discover in the workplace — private or government — then what kind of a society do we live in? When our privacy can be invaded by the government’s ability to spy on us in our homes through laptops and other technology beyond our knowledge, then what kind of a society do we live in? “Over the past decades,” Greenwald writes, “the fear of terrorism — stoked by consistent exaggerations of the actual threat — has been exploited by U.S. leaders to justify a wide array of extremist policies.” If you don’t have anything to hide, why should you worry about government surveillance? Because our government — especially the military and intelligence industrial complex — is becoming controlled more and more by corporate interests, just as corporations today are exerting a dangerous influence over our entire democratic process. Without checks on corporate power, it is not unfathomable to conclude that in time our most precious resource — our freedom to think — will be under surveillance, too. a Tim Miejan is editor and co-publisher of The Edge. Message from Maitreya by Shirley Moore A number of years ago I read somewhere that certain Ascended Masters were on the planet helping us hold and increase our vibrations and waiting for the right time to reveal themselves. In particular, the name of Ascended Master Lord Maitreya caught my attention. There is much written and much attributed to him throughout the world today, and many, like me, are awaiting his arrival. My personal adventures began with the first Maitreya Project visit to Minnesota years ago. The ability to view ancient Buddhic relics intrigued me and riveted my attention. I know that I have had many satisfying and challenging past lives as a Buddhist monk. In addition, the name Maitreya was one with which I have a deep kindred feeling. Just the name evokes an incredible energetic pulse in me. The worldwide Maitreya Tour was created as a place to display the relics while a new temple was being built. My understanding is that Buddha relics have never been outside of India before, and the likelihood of it happening again is slim. However, the tour has become so popular and exposed so many people to high frequencies that it seems it will now continue indefinitely. The Maitreya Project returns to Minnesota on September 18-20 and will be on display at Intelligent Nutrients. The venue is free and offers you an opportunity to view the “pearls,” which are actually the remains after cremation. Usually bodies are incinerated to ash but in some rare cases, small pearls are left and these are felt to be from a very spiritual master or student. It is believed that the “pearls” embody some of the wisdom, teachings and essence of the   see

Maitreya Loving Kindness Tour to exhibit the Buddha’s ancient, sacred relics A free exhibition of ancient and sacred relics of the historical Buddha Shakyamuni and 44 other Buddhist masters from India, Tibet & China is currently touring the world. Organized by the Maitreya Loving Kindness Project, coordinated in Minneapolis by local sponsors and hosted by Intelligent Nutrients Gallery, this unique exhibit is a rare opportunity to experience relics in person. The exhibit will be on display at Intelligent Nutrients Gallery, 983 E. Hennepin Ave., Minneapolis, on September 18-20. Also, the exhibit will feature a special collection of Tibetan Buddhist art (including rarely seen examples of the Himalayan tsa-tsa art form) from a private local collection. In all there are 3,000 relics in this collection, including those offered to the tour by His Holiness the Dalai Lama that are more than 2,600 years old, a collection from the Sakya Reliquary in Tibet and also from Meiktila Museum in Burma. Most of the relics in this collection resemble multi-colored, pearl-like crystals that in Tibetan are called “ringsel” and in Sanskrit are known as “Sarira.” It is believed that relics embody the master’s spiritual qualities of compassion and wisdom and are deliberately produced by the master at his death. The crystal relics were found among the cremation ashes of

these masters. The beauty of the reliquary objects is experienced on a number of levels, including the cultural, spiritual and artistic. “When these individuals were alive, they were practicing universal values, for example, unconditional love, compassion, patience,” said Thubten Norbu, a Buddhist nun and one of the tour managers. “So, the relics are really the manifestation of love, kindness and compassion. That is the real meaning.” The Tour has visited 68 countries and 2.5 million people have viewed the relics to date. The exhibit is free and open to the public. Public exhibit hours: September 18: 6-8 p.m., opening ceremony followed by relic viewing; September 19: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., relic viewing; and September 20: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., relic viewing. During exhibit hours Saturday and Sunday, the Tibetan Buddhist Monks of Gyuto Wheel of Dharma Monastery will offer ritual blessings to exhibit guests who wish it, with a relic touched to the crown of the head. Pet blessings will be offered Saturday, 4-6 p.m., and Sunday, 1-3 p.m., for leashed or kenneled small domestic pets such as cats and dogs, or other gentle creatures. HU, this ancient name for God, is a love song to God. You can sing it. And in singing it or holding it in your mind during times of need, it becomes a prayer. It becomes a prayer of the highest sort. It becomes a non-directed prayer, which means that we’re willing to let the Holy Spirit take care of the affairs in our life according to the divine plan instead of our personal plan. If people would trust their hearts and know that if they love God and open their heart — if they love God through loving their neighbor — they will find that God brings help and protection to them in ways that most people don’t know. 10  www.edgemagazine.net

alternatives we might not have considered. Some people hear it as a voice. Some people experience it as a sense of intuition or an inner nudge. Others experience a profound awareness in a dream. Inner guidance can come to people in many ways. Can inner guidance help people with problems in their daily life? AAB: Absolutely! Inner guidance can really

Earle Brown Heritage Center — as part of Edge Life’s Minneapolis Holistic Expo on November 7-8 in Brooklyn Center. She spoke to us about inner guidance and about Eckankar’s role in her life. How would you define inner guidance? Anne Archer Butcher: Inner guidance is like

having a wise person over our shoulder speaking in our ear at any moment. It has the wisdom to help us make decisions, to protect us, to warn us, and to show us

Students of ECK have many stories of protection and healing. They are learning the future in their dreams. This is because they have been able to open their hearts to God’s love. The way to do that is to sing HU to yourself. Sing it as HU-U-U-U (like the word hue) in one long sound, in one long breath. You just sing this very quietly to yourself or inwardly. You may see the Light of God; it can be a blue light, a white light, a yellow light, or a green light. You can see it many different ways. Or you may hear the sound of tinkling bells, a flute, a full orchestra, or something as simple as a sigh. But you will be filled with love. Sing HU, and this may help

help us in every moment, day to day. If we can learn how to begin to listen and we can practice listening all the time, then the inner guidance is there for the big things. It is like preparing for the Olympics. You wouldn’t just show up and say “I’m a good athlete. I can do this.” It’s really important to practice being aware of the inner guidance. Begin by getting a sense of those nudges when they come, how to test them, and how to know when they are real and true. Then when the big things happen, we are prepared. The guidance and protection that we get can do anything from saving our lives to helping us make a better decision at work. Would you say everybody has inner guidance? AAB: Absolutely. It doesn’t mean we are

always aware and listening. But we all have it. As the title of my book implies, it is our divine birthright to access that knowledge, to rely on it to help us make decisions in life and to reach our highest potential in every moment.   see Butcher on p. 12

you open your heart to God’s love. Then you will find the miracles happening in your life, too. These techniques are not meant to suggest that a Christian can’t chant HU or an ECKist can’t think of Jesus or anyone else. You do whatever your heart tells you to do. You are an individual; there is just one of you. You have your own understanding of God, and you are on your own path to God. The ECK Worship Service is to help people find out what they can do to improve their relationship with God. If we can help in any way, we are more than willing to be of service. a Sri Harold Klemp will speak at the ECK Worldwide Seminar

continued from p. 10

How about knowing the future? Do you think inner guidance can help a person know the future? AAB: Yes — and sometimes we don’t want

to know the future. Our inner guidance can begin to prepare us, though, and show us what’s ahead. By truly being prepared, our inner guidance can keep us from collapsing in a difficult situation. Or help us really rise to the occasion and handle things with grace.

Can you tell us about how relying on your inner guidance saved your life? AAB: One event that happened to me began

a whole series of powerful experiences. I was questioning what I believed in and what truth was. I posed these questions to God one day as I went swimming in the ocean. The water was cold on Christmas Day. I wanted to go into the water anyway because it was hot outside. I’m a strong swimmer, but I got caught in a riptide and was pulled out. Out there in the depths of the ocean, I knew how to get out of a riptide, but I wasn’t quite sure which way I wanted to go with the current. As I looked to my left I saw a shark coming right at me. By nature I wanted to figure out how to fight that shark. Do I hit him in the eye? Does it have a soft underbelly? But I received clear inner guidance that said “Lie down flat, stretched out long and lean with my face in the water.” I made myself into a platform. I could feel a sense of inner peace and calm, although I wasn’t sure this would necessarily save me from the shark. What happened was I became a platform for dolphins! One of them hit me underneath really hard and just when I thought I would be thrashed around and pulled into the ocean by the shark, I was lifted up in the air. The dolphins actually lifted me up and carried me to shore! Had I not listened to that inner guidance, I would have been flailing and looking at that shark. Instead, I was perfectly moved away from the danger and my life was saved. That experience completely changed me. As I left the ocean, I was amazed at what happened. The inner connectedness of all life was very clear to me. I began to pose more questions to God and the universe to find out what was really happening. I felt there was much, much more going on than the teachings of my childhood faith had prepared me for.

In your book, you mention Eckankar and the spiritual exercises of ECK. Do these teachings help you understand your inner guidance? AAB: To me, the teachings of Eckankar

came along at a very important time in my life. It was while I was teaching high school. I was questioning what I believed and what spiritual direction I wanted to go in life.

12  www.edgemagazine.net

“This ancient name is HU, (pronounced “hue.”) I like to think of it as the HU in human. It reminds us of the divine essence that each of us truly is. We are Soul.” Then I had an amazing experience in the classroom. A substitute teacher visited my class and saw all these quotes written and posted on the walls of my classroom that had come to me inwardly. He left a book behind called, Eckankar — The Key to Secret Worlds. That book contained so much wisdom and so many wonderful exercises. It gave me such a terrific spiritual direction that I began to really study these teachings. I found that Eckankar offers tools, techniques, and exercises to help anyone access inner guidance in their lives and to have a transformative experience. You can become more aware and in tune with the guidance from Divine Spirit from these exercises. I learned by practicing the spiritual exercises, they can help us develop our inner guidance. We can pose our questions and we can get answers. Eckankar also teaches dream study. This allows us to delve more deeply into an aspect of our lives that most people really don’t have much time for. Eckankar’s dream teachings help us understand how to interpret our dreams and find guidance in our dreams, so we can live a fuller, more rich, and aware life. It really doesn’t matter what path you are on, what religion you follow, or what your beliefs may be or not be. These tools, techniques, and exercises can enhance the life of anyone. It can enhance them right where they are on their own spiritual path. Do you have a technique you would like to share? AAB: Yes. One of the techniques that I like

to share is to simply chant an ancient name for God. Eckankar teaches this, although the name isn’t specific to Eckankar. It has been used for eons by people all over the world. It’s a secret name for God. When we chant it, we fill ourselves with love and peace and calm that comes with that. This ancient name is HU, (pronounced “hue.”) I like to think of it as the HU in human. It reminds us of the divine essence that each of us truly is. We are Soul. We don’t have a Soul, we really are Soul. The HU reminds us of that. It helps us reconnect with the core of that divine love that is our true essence. You can simply chant or sing this word, silently or aloud, for a few minutes, or 20 minutes a day. It is an exercise to help you gain more wisdom and insight. It helps you achieve a sense of peace, calm, and clarity

in your life beyond anything you might have imagined. When I share this exercise with people, many respond saying they could not believe the insights they received during that exercise. Others say, “That was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever experienced, period.” For me, the HU not only transformed my life and enhanced it in every way, it has saved me in times of deep trouble. It has uplifted me. It has helped me to gain a sense of divine purpose and confidence in life that otherwise I would never have achieved. Is HU a form of meditation? AAB: The way I look at it, there is prayer,

meditation, and then contemplation. Contemplation is a more creative and active process as a spiritual exercise than meditation where you are simply quieting the mind. The word HU comes from a high spiritual place where you can move beyond worlds of dual reality, beyond good/bad, dark/light and you can experience that pure, positive love flow within you by chanting this word. In contemplation, by singing HU you can experience these higher spiritual worlds.

How does the HU really work? How did it help you achieve all those benefits?” AAB: This is my understanding: Our vibra-

tions attract to us the experiences we have in life. We learn about our vibrations in 11th grade physics. Everything is molecules in motion. Everything is vibrating at varying frequencies. For example, we know how wonderful we feel when we listen to a beautiful piece of music. Our vibrations are uplifted in an instant. When we sing HU, it helps to raise the vibrations to a very, very, high level. The negative things just blow away from our being. That’s what can be so transformative. When you practice it on a day-to-day basis, you begin to change on a permanent level. Life can change for people who practice singing the HU on a daily basis. It truly is for anyone from any religion or background. It is available to each of us if we want to take advantage of that beautiful opportunity.

What are some of the ways that people can enhance their inner guidance? AAB: There are five things I would like to

share that have really helped me enhance my inner guidance: Do whatever you can to enhance your 

consciousness on a daily basis. Practice and discipline can make all the difference in the world. Listen and acknowledge   the guidance that you have. We all have guidance and it really helps to put attention on it. Be grateful for the guidance that we are receiving moment to moment even if it’s a simple thing like “Turn left instead of right” and suddenly you realize you’ve just missed a car wreck. Ask inwardly for guid   ance. Then surrender with love to whatever answers come through. Practice gratitude and love   on a daily basis. Just being a more loving and spiritual person can help you be more in accord with your guidance so that this inner presence becomes stronger. Find a way to be of service   to all life, however you can and in whatever way that works for you. It helps to open the heart and that helps to truly enhance your life. How did inner guidance lead you to believe that there is no death? AAB: One of the things that

I learned in one of the spiritual experiences I had was a profound life-changer. It’s the concept that there is no death. I learned this through an inner experience where I was taken into a world of absolute love, beauty, and light. I wanted to stay there forever. Instead, I was told that there was much to be done and I had to return. I was given instructions before I left. The very first thing I was told was to remember is that there is no death. That changed everything for me. I suddenly knew that I would live life far more enthusiastically and boldly than I ever had before, just knowing that. I knew it in the very core of my being. It was a magnificent experience. In your book, you wrote about the ECK Masters and how they helped you. Can you share something about that? AAB: One of the things I found

after I discovered the Eckankar teachings was that there is an entire hierarchy of Masters watching over, guarding, guiding, and protecting us,

even when we’re not aware of it. Certainly we’ve heard of angels and guardians but I had never heard of these ECK Masters, from a long lineage called the Vairagi Order. I wanted to know if they were real. I wanted to know the truth. Someone shared an exercise with me and I’ve been sharing it with people all over the world who have practiced it themselves and have had great results. I’ll share it with you now. I took a picture of the ECK Masters and put them by my bed. Some of them are ancient Masters. I asked any of them to come and guide me and show me they are real. It didn’t take long for me to experience a dream where two Masters came to me. I was certain they were completely different than anyone I had ever met before. They were bathed in light. They sparkled with love and a brilliance like nothing I had ever seen. What was amazing was, they walked up to me and one of them asked, “What is it that you wish?” This wasn’t like a genie in a bottle asking me “what did I want in life?” He was probing deeply into my heart. I realized he knew me better than I knew myself. He was encouraging me to my highest and greatest potential. I was amazed at this experience. For me the “proof is always in the pudding.” After the dream my whole life began to change. It changed for the better. It changed in magnificent ways. So I invite anyone to try this for themselves. If anyone wants to see the pictures of the Masters, they can simply go to spiritualexperiences.org and request a free copy of the book. It has the pictures of the Masters in it, a CD, and more information about the HU and other spiritual exercises. a For more information on Anne Archer Butcher’s book, Inner Guidance: Our Divine Birthright, visit www.InnerGuidanceBook. org. disincarnated beings so that we may tune into them and gain from their experiences. You will be able to view the relics and, if you choose, also receive a blessing from one of the monks with a chalice containing relics placed over your head. During my first viewing of the relics, I watched with interest as those before me knelt for their blessing and were sent on their way. When my turn came, I did the same — and to my amazement, I was offered the opportunity to hold the vessel containing the relics. My hands shook and the tears flowed as I accepted the added blessing, and I left my body for a brief time. I watched carefully and did not see anyone else offered the same opportunity. The second time I viewed the relics, I was again offered the opportunity to hold them and was as emotionally overcome as the first time. Again, no one else during my visit was offered the opportunity to hold the chalice. “When is Maitreya going to reveal himself?” I began asking the question publicly and privately in the early months of 2013. I felt it was time. And then, a trip to Banff in June 2013 turned into one of the most magnificent adventures. While walking down the main street of Banff, I could feel someone staring deeply into me. As I walked closer to the person, I looked up and was startled to see him able to gaze clear into my soul and I could begin to see all my lives start to flow out towards him. This alarmed me, so I immediately drew in my energy field and quickly walked past him. I did not share this with anyone. The next evening, I again walked down the same street and experienced the same person staring at me. This time I was determined to face up to this challenge. I looked at him and could tell he was again seeing right into my soul and through all my lifetimes. What was amazing to me was that I could do the same with him. There were no barriers between us. We were one. That night in my meditation, I asked who he was — and he came to me. He said I knew who he was and I had asked for him to reveal himself to me. After some sparring back and forth, with me denying that I ever asked for anything like that, I had my “aha” moment. With my realization that this was Maitreya energy, he said “I am.” Lord Maitreya has been with me ever since, mostly for my private growth and development, but sometimes he gives me a message to put out for others. I was prompted to tell this story in hopes that it will compel you to support the Maitreya Project while it is in Minnesota. Many continued blessings. a Shirley Moore is a hypnotherapist, intuitive and spiritual coach based in White Bear Lake, MN. She is a teacher, healer, leader and resource. Breathe open a closed connection: consciously choosing, creating by Robert Winn We all have times when things aren’t going the way we expected in our day or in our lives. Maybe we feel anxious, frustrated or upset with someone or something. We feel closed off from the flow, like we are not supported by the universe. And this closed feeling is the perfect gift! It is a wake-up call from our soul: an intimate communication inviting us to “choose again” and reconnect. The truth is, our separation and suffering is optional. We know that we create our experience with our thoughts and the meaning we give to life’s events. Stress is caused by our judgments of and reactions to our circumstances, not the circumstances themselves. So, our constricted feeling is an opportunity to make a conscious decision: how do we want to experience life— open or closed, loving or and fearful? It is up to us to make the connection. After all, it was us who chose (often unconsciously) to disconnect. So, how do we get back home? Simple, we breathe. Like going to the mountains, forest or ocean to get some fresh air, we simply step outside of where we are in the moment — physically, mentally, and emotionally — and make the conscious choice to take a deep breath and let it go. Then take another, and another. Simply feel the breath coming in and going out. Merely shifting our breath will shift our

thoughts. When our breath flows, our perception becomes more fluid. We let go of our insistence and resistance. It is this easy to reconnect with the universe. Whenever we disconnect, we constrict our breathing. A deep breath will bring us back to our center. As we inhale, we fill our bodies with the oxygen needed to replenish our most basic physical needs, allowing the air to circulate within us. Exhaling, we release the old, that which no longer serves us. We let go and allow, releasing tension that constricts us. Deep relaxed breathing can take us gracefully into the stillness that lies at our center. We reconnect to the universe. So, feeling closed off can become a blessing, a transformative experience, once we become conscious of it and notice our tight shallow breath. We consciously choose to breathe deeply. Once we make the connection in our minds, our bodies know what to do and gently bring us back to the connection we seek. a Robert Winn, Spiritual Teacher and Transmutation Catalyst for 39 years, is the founder of Soul Breathing™ and an expert in Higher Consciousness and Body-MindSpirit Integration. Our Divine Blueprint An Interview with Rev. Carol Parrish

by Tim Miejan Long recognized as an inspired spiritual leader, Rev. Carol Parrish has stimulated many people to rejoice in their oneness with God. Her presentation of the esoteric aspects of early Christianity, free of doctrine and adornment, reinforces our acceptance of the Christ. Ordained in 1971, Rev. Parrish left a promising business career to devote herself to her ministry and lecturing in the human potential movement. Having directed the Villa Serena community of Sarasota, Florida, for several years, she was led by spiritual guidance in 1981 to establish the community of Sparrow Hawk Village in the foothills of the Ozarks near Tahlequah, Oklahoma. There she served as President of Light of Christ Community Church until 2009 and Academic Dean of Sancta Sophia Seminary until her retirement in June 1, 2010. Since then, she is as busy as ever teaching, writing and conducting seminars all over the country. Rev. Parrish, author of 16 books, will lead a Theosophical Society workshop

What should each of us know about our Divine Blueprint that most of us do not? Rev. Carol Parrish: Most of us do not know

the history as taught in ancient wisdom of the Earth, the planet itself, and that’s what I’m going to talk about. I’m going to talk about elements that make up the planet, the elementals, about Lemuria and Atlantis, about The Plan, about how the Earth was created, how it will go back to the etheric, and what it is facing at the present time. I’m going to talk about the hierarchy of wise ones who are leading us and about things we can do as we move into the energies of the Aquarian Age, which we are now into.

on “Exploring the Divine Blueprint for Humanity” from 2-6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, at Spirit United Church, 3204 Como Ave. SE, Minneapolis. She spoke by phone from her home in Oklahoma about her upcoming workshop, about the role of religion in the 21st century, and what has shaped her life.

Rev. Carol Parrish to speak this month at Spirit United Rev. Carol Parrish, author of 16 books, will lead a workshop on “Exploring the Divine Blueprint for Humanity” from 2-6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, at Spirit United Church, 3204 Como Ave. SE, Minneapolis. The four-hour workshop is sponsored by Ancient Wisdom / Ancient Mysteries, the local branch of the international Theosophical Society. Celtic Harpist Bettie Seitzer will provide live music; and there will be free refreshments and free parking in the lot east of the church, located two blocks west of Hwy. 280 next to the First Transit bus garage. Admission is $35 adults, $55 for couples or families, and $30 for students, seniors, or Theosophical Society members. Reservations may be made the day of the event at the door. The former dean of Sancta Sophia Seminary in Oklahoma and 16  www.edgemagazine.net

bishop in ascension alliance will examine the evolution of the human group mind, with a brief glance at Lemuria, Atlantis, and the question of an Inner World. She also will review the major root races and contributions each has made. She will explore the story of earth’s journey and its facing a present-day near death experience. “We ask from where does our help come,” Parrish says, “as we explore the work of the hierarchy and steps of initiation.” In addition, Rev. Parrish will examine humanity’s present day work, “as we swim in the choppy water of the old departing and struggle to grasp the new energies of the Aquarian Age,” she said. She has now retired after 30 years as academic dean of Sancta Sophia Seminary located in that village. She is currently serving as an autocephalous bishop in Ascension Alliance, a

Can you highlight maybe a few of the things that we could be doing right now to assist ourselves in this evolutionary process? CP: We have to realize how really important

climate change is, that we’re all contributing to the problem and that each one of us has to modify our behavior in some way. The general public has heard this, but it has not really done anything about it, like

part of the Free Catholic Movement for the Third Millennium. Her base of operations is at the Chapel of Christ Sophia. She continues to be active in introducing the Divine Feminine, as it has an impact in the world. She is the author of some 16 books and a three-part series of lessons on Esoteric Christianity. Rev. Parrish teaches that prayer and a life of spiritual disciplines and practices are necessary for aspirants today, as they were in the past. “Discipline is a way of life — a decisive process of growth that must move slowly to enrich one’s life and not cause distress,” she says. “Such discipline results in personal transformation and a better world, as we move collectively from competitiveaggressive activities to those of support.” She believes the force that directs, allows and fulfills these goals is love. Rev. Parrish also will lecture on the Kabalah in an open public meeting of Ancient Wisdom / Ancient Mysteries, the local branch of the Theosophical Society, from 7-9

p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, at Spirit United Church. This introduction will examine the four worlds of the Kabalistic tradition and glance at Jacob’s ladder using the age-old diagrams to see the preserved wisdom of the tradition. After a journey through the Sephiroth, examining the familiar chakra system, she will explore tools of more traditional study and discover valuable relationships to various studies that have contributed to the pool of study. This will include valuable relationships to various studies that have contributed to the pool of wisdom – astrology, numerology, tarot, and more. saving water, saving electricity, turning our thermostats down or using a toilet twice before we flush it. We have not realized that we are misusing our resources. I know Minneapolis is really good about picking up things and recycling. My state of Oklahoma has begun recycling, but only in some cities. I live in the country and there is no recycling where I am. We have to begin to think about this kind of thing. The climate is changing. When I lived in Florida, we had heavy rains like we have been having here in Oklahoma. I’ve lived in Oklahoma 35 years and I have never seen torrential rains like we’ve had this year. These are the kinds of things we have to think about. We have to realize also that humanity is being pressured by these new energies that are conflicting. The energy of the Piscean Age was very emotional. The energy of the Aquarian Age is more mental. So, there’s a conflict in heart and mind being stirred up within us, and I think that has contributed to a lot of our violence. We have to begin to think about what each one of us can do. Maybe just learning how to stop and think and count to 10, things we’ve been told, but we don’t do them. We need to learn how to just sit quietly every day. If we don’t want to formally meditate, just sit quietly and bring peace and calm into yourself so that when the next event happens in your life, you can respond to it from a centered place rather than from a place of taking offense. A little saying that I like to say and repeat to people is, “You add offense to the world just as much when you take offense as when you give offense.” Most people kind of talk to themselves, “I don’t want to take offense,” but we’ve got to learn not to give offense.” With all the turmoil and fragmentation of the institution of religion, there seems to be less commitment to it. What is your sense of this? CP: I think there is a lot more commitment

to the spiritual path, but a lack of faith in traditional churches. I sell a lot of books, and a lot of people call me and ask questions. I see people who haven’t been in a church for years reading books and sitting quietly and trying to do something that they call their spiritual practice. I talk about how to do your own private spiritual practice, because people aren’t going to traditional churches. They’re needing change. They know traditional religion hasn’t worked for them. Even while they may say they are a Protestant or a Catholic or something, they don’t practice the teachings of their organization. I think there are more people on the spiritual path than we realize.

I think you might be right. So, people may be 18  www.edgemagazine.net

personalizing spirituality more than they ever have before. CP: People say to me all the time, “I’m into

spirituality, not religion.” I just met a man recently who said, “Oh, I’m so glad to meet somebody who is in spirituality. I’m not into religion at all. I went to a church school all my years, but I don’t buy it.” And I think that’s happening for a lot of people. Do you think that represents a shift in our collective consciousness? CP: I do, and that’s what we need. We have

to make enough of a shift that we become responsible for our planet right now. Our planet is going through a near-death experience. People are waking up, but it’s a slow process. I want it to be faster than it is, but really it’s happening more and more than we realize — not just in the USA but all over the world. The native peoples of different lands are doing it, of course, because they more or less always have been into taking care of nature. I think we’re going to have to apply what we know to our own household, and that’s where the collective will really make a shift.

Is the fact that this Earth is going through a near-death experience mirroring what’s going on within our own consciousness? CP: Yes. That’s what woke up so many of

us years ago. Now it’s happening more and more for the collective. Now, this is my idea from my own near-death experience, but when a certain percentage of a collective has near-death experiences, it doesn’t belong to them alone anymore. It belongs to the collective. It’s happening now to people all over the world.

I understand your life changed completely in 1958, at the age of 24. Can you tell me about that experience? CP: Well, I went to a traditional church. I

was Catholic and went to mass every Sunday. I was in childbirth, and all of a sudden, they gave me sodium pentothal, which is a very harmless drug usually, but my lungs collapsed and I found myself up at the ceiling of the delivery room looking and watching myself down below. I saw the baby born. I saw it was a girl. About that time, there was this kind of whirling wind and I found myself going through a tunnel. I found myself in a place of beauty and light — not light that would hurt your eyes, but a place of light surrounded by a presence. It was the greatest love I have ever felt in my life. I felt nothing like it before. This voice, very tenderly, said to me, “If you are, you always will be.” And, I was comforted so much. Then it shifted and I saw several pictures of myself. I saw myself first speaking. I had never spoken up in any group in my life at that time. Then I saw some other pictures. I saw myself with a collar on. I saw myself with white hair, and

many times I’ve thought to myself, “Well, I’m going to live through this if I’m going to live until I have white hair.” I have used that in my own life, traveling in airplanes when it was real scary. I did a lot of overseas travel. But I’ve always gone back to that comforting remark, “If you are, you always will be.” And it reinforced the idea to me of life after death, ongoing life. I consider it ongoing life, that you step into this world and then you step out of this world, into a more refined one. Is that kind of an experience one that never leaves you, that when you think about it, you can remember exactly what happened? CP: Exactly. I can feel it all over again. And

it has been very valuable to me — and, indeed, I changed so much. I didn’t realize it right then. I tried to tell people. I tried to tell the doctor. I was in the hospital for several days. He patted me on the shoulder and said, “It’s hallucination. Forget it.” And, I looked at the priest, I looked at my parents and I looked at my husband and thought, “How will I ever tell them, if they won’t believe me?” I was in an old-fashioned oxygen tent then, and when I got better, I went home and then realized that I related differently to people now. I was much more objective about people. I had more of a quiet inner self, and I was able to deal with things better. At that time, I didn’t even know about meditation. I had not ever heard about spirituality and I had no teacher at that time. After I got the children into bed, I just sat quietly and sometimes an hour would pass and I thought, “Oh, my goodness! It’s so late. I need to get up and go to bed.” But, it just came naturally for me. I had lots of children and I was really on the run, so I related to needing to sit down and just stop for a little bit. Pretty soon it became a part of my life. It was seven years before I found my first teacher — or she found me — and I’ve studied ever since. I studied with three wonderful teachers. Ann Manser was my first teacher from Oldsmar, Florida, and then I studied with Vera Stanley Alder from England. I went back and forth usually twice a year to have an opportunity to study with her. I remarried after my first husband died, and my second husband was into spirituality, so we went together to England several times to visit Vera and her husband. Later, I studied with Torkom Saradydarian in Los Angeles. So, I never quit studying. I still study and it adds a joyful peace to my life.

How do you find that Christianity, specifically the message of Jesus, is evolving in the current day? CP: I think Jesus was the archetype for us in

the Piscean Age, and I think the Aquarian Age challenges us to become like unto that. I study esoteric Christianity rather than

traditional Christianity, and esoteric Christianity really challenges us to become the person ourself, to work with ourself, to practice the ideas Jesus gave us, to send healing, positive thoughts to one another, to pray for one another, to meditate, to study, to keep good company, to be generous to others, share ourself in all the loving ways that we possibly can with other people. Do you find that some of these examples of the way that Jesus led his life are becoming more and more a part of who all of us are? CP: I think so. I was touched by

the gospel of Mary Magdalene from the Nag Hammadi scrolls and her talk about love. These are giving us more first-hand information about Jesus. I loved the writing of the Gnostic Gospels by Elaine Pagels. These things are telling us what the first church was like. The early church was nothing like our church today, and I think we sense it, but we didn’t know it, and now we’ve got some information that is helping to free us more from the traditional church. Not all traditional churches are bad, and I surely don’t mean to imply that, because this is where people find fellowship and relationships, and they learn to love. People hear teachings, but I don’t think we’re supposed to stop there. I think we are to emulate Jesus and the high consciousness that he carried and the practices he suggested to all of us. As we live that kind of a life, we change — and many people are doing that now.

Your leadership at Sancta Sophia was remarkable. How do you reflect on the legacy of the seminary and your teaching there? CP: I really have one guideline

for teaching people. You have to love your students. If you do not respond well to the need of the student, you are not their teacher. They should be with somebody else. It’s not like a public school, where you teach everybody who shows up in the class. You’re supposed to have a warmth of feeling and a concern about

the benefits those people are getting out of what you say. It’s a combination of caring about them and generosity. I’ve been a speaker for a long time, and I find that the collective, the group you’re talking to, pulls the right information out of you. It just comes. I particularly like the fact that I got an invitation from the Theosophical Society, because I’ve been a member for all these years since I lived in Florida. I was really thrilled when they called me. What are you personally studying now? Where is your focus at this time in your life? CP: Right now, I’m writing a

book about the water mysteries and fire mysteries. The reason I’m writing it is because I have worked really hard in my life to collect information and to come to an understanding of the mysteries themselves, the process of initiation and the mysteries that guide us. I’ve been working on that for three years already.

Finally, what final thoughts would you like to leave with our readers? CP: Information is everywhere.

We have to slow down enough to find it. The television, magazines, newspapers, books, all count, but if you just stay busy all the time and keep your mind so busy, you don’t find things as quickly as you do if you’ll just digest some of what you’re reading. Be very selective about the people you associate with. One of the things that was taught to early disciples was that the company they kept was really important, because the vibrations would help to nurture them. We all recognize that when we go in a place, a vibration is there — and if we choose good vibrations, we’re already helping ourself to find the path.a For more information on Dr. Carol Parrish, visit www.caroleparrish. com. Higher Realms Initiations A Conversation with spiritual teacher Christine Day

by Tim Miejan Leading spiritual teacher, healer, channel and author Christine Day returns this October with new initiations from the Pleiadians during “Higher Realm Reconnections,” a three-day Pleiadian Seminar taking place October 30 to November 1 at Ramada Mall of America in Bloomington, MN. “The Pleiadians are bringing initiations from the higher realms for the first time,” Day says. “We as a human race are ready for this amazing life-changing opportunity. These higher realm initiations will take you on your unique awakening journey that will open your vision, moving you beyond the limited reality of life. Experience yourself from a new perspective through a series of direct experiences that will enable you to begin living and utilizing an aspect of your energy that was previously untapped within you before.” She says an aspect of the higher realm initiation is the opening of four new energetic centers that will transform your energetic system within your physical and energetic body. “There will be a re-positioning of your DNA strands, creating a realignment to aspects of your higher self, opening a clarity and understanding of your life now, empowering you to take your next step,” she says. “The systems of your body will go through a cellular rejuvenation as you anchor new aspects of light within your cells; simultaneously, there will be a release of old dense sabotaging patterns leaving your body. Work with the Pleiadians, Lemurians and the pure loving energies of Mother Mary and the Christ energy.” The Seminar takes place from 1-6 p.m. on October 30-31, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on November 1 at the Ramada Mall of America, 2300 American Blvd. E., Bloomington. Admission is $425 ($375 before Sept.30). The evening before the start of the Pleiadian Seminar, at 7 p.m. on October 29, a Transmission of Light event with Christine Day will take place at the site of the seminar. The public is invited to receive an awakening of your Heart through this pure, powerful Transmission of Light. In a Transmission, Christine channels a message from the Pleiadians, which is guided and relevant in the moment. The cost for the Transmission of Light is $28. align to another level of their co-creating abilities. These higher realm initiations are being offered for the very first time here by the Pleiadians on the Earth plane. I know it is going to be a very powerful and important process for a great many people. What can you share about those centers in the body that are going to be opened up for the first time? CD: We’ll be opening these centers and

Christine Day’s monthly column in The Edge, “Message from the Pleiadians,” can be found online this month at Edgemagazine.net on September 1. Christine Day spoke with The Edge about the upcoming seminar and on how the Pleiadians view what is taking place on Earth at this time. How will this 2015 event differ from your past three-day Pleiadian seminars? Christine Day: It’s probably the first intro-

duction of some new higher frequency energies and initiations that the Pleiadians are able to bring forward at this time. The dimensional split that took place at the time of the Summer Solstice in June has really brought in the potential for human beings to go through a much more accelerated awakening. The Pleiadians liken it to a “light womb” that would birth on our planet, making it possible for each one of us to self-birth more consciously. This new energy on the planet allows us to start shrugging off some of the density of that third-dimensional illusion that we’ve been carrying around. The Pleiadians liken this light womb to a vehicle that allows us to create a very strong metamorphic change within our physical and energetic bodies. The Pleiadians are bringing in these new four energetic openings in the body that we have not worked with or utilized or connected to in this lifetime. We’re going to be opening those up, and that will create an incredible shift in consciousness. They call this level of work “Higher Realm Initiations,” and they allow a self-liberation process to take place, allowing people to

then we’ll be activating them. There is a difference. In the four energetic centers, we’ll be accessing new areas of the brain we haven’t yet utilized, and then we’ll be activating those by working with tools that assist people in their co-creation. These energy centers will be activated through a direct experience: The pineal gland, which will bring in   the natural gifts of the co-creating element, self-healing. The spinal area. At its base, in the   bone of the sacrum, is a container for the godhead consciousness. This godhead energy is a natural part of all of us, and when activated, it will allow people to naturally re-experience an aspect of awareness within them. It’s a rejuvenation process that takes place through the cells of the body, and it is a feeling of lightness and self-liberation. It allows us to emerge from the density, from the heaviness of the third-dimensional illusion. The heart space. That’s always been the   entry back home, the entry back to connection to self, to that higher self. We will be opening a multidimensional doorway energetic center there that will bring people back into a state of receivership and selfresurrection, a feeling of understanding and remembering of why we’re here, why we’ve come to have a human experience. It’s part of self-manifestation and the ability to co-create what we want for ourselves in this lifetime. The solar plexus, traditionally, is incred   ibly dense. When I worked with opening this center myself — because I always work with these initiations before I bring them to people — it was about our own personal power. The solar plexus carries a tremendous amount of density in it from this lifetime and other lifetimes, misperceptions, old belief systems about not deserving, of really being lost from our power, separated from our personal power. What I noticed when this energetic center

was opened was a tremendous amount of density of lifetimes leaving, and that density had been clouding an aspect of a part of my power, of me connecting and really knowing who I was — and experiencing that. Once it was broken down, there was a tremendous clearing, not only in the solar plexus, but all along the rib cage. It was as if a cage that had been imbedded there over lifetimes was lifted off, leaving me with an amazing, profound experience of transformation that has stayed with me and has propelled me forward completely. I see the four energetic centers creating incredible life-changing turning points for people in the seminar itself. I really feel like it’s really going to be one of the most important seminars that I’ve done up to this point in time, because of the potential here for people to be able to be in a state of self-liberation. The dimensional split that took place in June has opened an incredible potential for this to really accelerate people. A lot of our karma has shifted through the dimensional split opening on that June Solstice. I feel like the seminar is going to be incredibly potent and incredibly important not only for the people who come, because we will be forging pathways for others to follow, and that will have a huge impact on the planet. You mention not only the opening, but also the activating of these energy centers. I sense that this activation process will last not only for the three-day seminar, but it will carry through and begin a process that will continue to evolve in each person who does it. Correct? CD: Absolutely, and each person will take

away some materials to support them with their unfolding process. That’s a very important part of the seminar. It’s an ongoing process that allows people to continue to be self-empowered to do their own work, which is always the aim of the Pleiadians.

Some people who may not have attended your other three-day seminars may wonder if there is a prerequisite or if they are prepared for this transformation. What do you say to them? CD: This is a natural unfoldment that is

right for everybody at this time. Everybody who receives it will work with it in their own way. This is our time as a human race to start these very important unfoldings within ourselves, and through conscious choice we step forward to receive that. It’s a natural step, like breathing. When I worked with the four energetic centers, I sensed incredible liberation and freedom that was not harsh, not too intense, but a continual building of light that just fed me with peace. It was a new feeling and something that I hadn’t previously been able to touch with my awareness. It’s like a flower opening to the sun.

…The light also is carrying the resurrection energy of the Christ in it now. The sun’s light also is designed to bring in an added nutrition to us so that we can evolve with that energy, so that we can carry more of our higher self light in the cells of our bodies. That is part of what we have been given at this time. It’s like a natural feeding, a nutritional feeding that we have all been waiting for and looking for. There is a sense of peace and joy and love and relief in it, like we’ve been tied down, but we didn’t know we’ve been tied down — and then when a center opens, there is this deep sense of just relief, that you can finally breathe. Somehow we haven’t been able to take a full breath, and now we can. It’s really a process that gets brighter and brighter, but it’s very gentle in how it’s unfolding. It’s a simple, easy process, and then you experience even more of you, but not too much. It’s very beautiful the way the Pleiadians have created this initiation. You mention the flower opening up to the sun. In the last couple of columns you’ve written for The Edge, you’ve referred to sunlight. Please elaborate on its value for us at this time. CD: With what has taken place now with this

dimensional split, there is nearly unprecedented transformational change within the light rays of the sun. It carries a new light frequency, and the light rays are reflectors. They carry the reflections of our own higher self energy, our own higher self light. They act as a mirror. The beauty of this is that if the sunlight comes in through your window,

just bring your awareness to it and take a breath — and it’s like you are receiving an aspect of your own reflection of your higher self light. It has never been that way before. Last week, there was a further dimensional split that opened up the Christ Consciousness energy, so the light also is carrying the resurrection energy of the Christ in it now. The sun’s light also is designed to bring in an added nutrition to us so that we can evolve with that energy, so that we can carry more of our higher self light in the cells of our bodies. That is part of what we have been given at this time. A huge grace of energy is constantly with us — and it’s not going to go away. It’s just going to evolve to different levels so that we can consciously take it in at a very accelerated rate for our awakening. The Pleiadians were talking to me this morning about the nutritional aspect of the rays of the sun, of what it’s carrying right now and what it’s designing to do right now is to support our systems nutritionally, because there’s a real crisis around food on the planet right now. It’s like there’s almost a poisoning going on with all the chemicals in the food. So the added nutrition from the sun is designed to strengthen us as a community, health-wise, until there’s another shift around the food. The reflected rays of the sun will support us so that nothing stands in the way of this transitional phase, so that we will be ultimately successful in this transition. So, despite the attempt to poison our food system, this additional nutrition that we get from the light of the sun will help us so that even if we eat some of this poison food, it will not stop us from our evolution? CD: That’s correct. They don’t want anything

in the way. Part of the design right now is the release, the lifting of the karma. With the energy from the sun coming in, the dimensional split is opening the way for us to easily align back to aspects of ourselves, these higher realm initiations. All sorts of new frequencies and opportunities are coming in at this time, on many levels, to support us collectively with all humanity at this time. Of course, the third-dimensional illusion, the drama, is becoming more intense and more magnified. The key is to stay centered, connected to our hearts, to focus on the light, to focus on our hearts and really allow ourselves to witness what’s going on around us — all the corruption, all of the upheaval that is coming and will probably continue to come for some time until there is another shift in the balance on the planet. What’s the best mindset for somebody who may look at the drama going on in our world right now and feel like they need to speak out more or act out more? Is the correct mindset   see

  Initiations

continued from p. 21

maybe just to go into the heart and just see it as natural change going on and that it is not necessarily something we have to take part in? CD: Yeah, that is the mindset. The important thing

for everyone to remember is this: wherever you are in your life, we’re all being called to make the focus about ourselves. It’s about introspection and putting our attention inward, not to fix what’s going on outside. It’s a time to be committed to our inside, to our human part, and a time to learn about our vulnerabilities, our idiosyncrasies, and come back into a state of love and compassion for ourselves. Just be aware how quickly the human ego/mind wants to go out and fix someone else and not bring the attention to ourselves. It’s a time for self-reflection and for forgiveness. The drama that is around us in our lives is just mirroring what’s already inside of us. The important thing is to go within and meet that feeling; don’t be afraid of the feeling. Don’t get caught up in the drama outside. Bring the feeling in and find out where that is inside of you, and then just touch it and meet it and just feel yourself in that vulnerable place. That is really the biggest calling right now, and it’s so simple. We make it hard, because the human ego loves to look outside and say, “We’ll save the planet, we’ll save this, we’ll save that.” Actually, it’s our inside that needs saving, the part that needs us to be there. Let’s talk for a second about the Transmission of Light event before your three-day seminar. What takes place at this event? CD: I do know that the transmission of light is

going to carry a very strong energy at that time, and it’s designed to help people align back into the heart space, to help to bring people relief, lifting a lot of the density that they’re carrying, a lot of the pain. There’s going to be a lot of strong self-healing energy and the new letting-go energy. This revolution right now has us emerging from a heavy time, a dense time, into feeling more liberated and carrying less of our heavy burdens, and the burdens are just ready to be lifted off. It will be a preparation time for anyone who is coming to the seminar, but anyone can come and have an experience and allow that self-liberation, that lifting off of a lot of the density, because it just doesn’t have to be there anymore.

Do the Pleiadians give us a general overview of where the evolution of human consciousness is at this moment and what’s in store for us over the next year? CD: What they say is that we’re moving really

quickly. There’s going to be a lot more drama and upheaval on the planet. They’re saying that we are in no danger. We just need to stay connected to the heart space and witness it. Understand that the illusion is going to grow and seem to intensify, but we need to stay very centered in the truth of what we know to be true while that’s taking place. We are moving very quickly into accomplishing what we’ve come here to accomplish with this awakening process, and they are talking about two different phases.

22  www.edgemagazine.net

The first phase are those of us who are awake and conscious — and we will go through an awakening process very quickly. They’re saying that some of us will start our full awakening within the next two years. A lot more people will follow in five, and then the general population on the planet will take about ten to fifteen years before they have completed their transitional phases. The Pleiadians are very happy with what’s taking place and how we’re all responding with this dimensional split that’s taken place. It’s like a major turning point, I feel at this time. We will look back at 2015, the time of the summer Solstice, and say it was a major time when the wheel turned, when we turned a corner in our evolution process. It feels like it is a very positive time, a very sacred time, and a very exciting time. There’s a lot of optimism in people who are on the path. People are feeling incredible, like a load has been taken off, that they’re on a downhill path now. Even though things may be challenging in their lives, there is less worry and struggle and they are able to stay stable in their own heart. Part of the reason for the dimensional split was to support those who are on the path and allow them to come back into being able to anchor and stabilize that place of optimism. That has transformed so many people that I’m seeing. To me, it’s a really powerful time, an intense time. Expect the unexpected and just witness it rather than react to it, because there will be a lot that’s going to be taking place. One phrase that keeps coming to me as we have been talking is that nothing is stopping us now. It’s like we’re moving forward and nothing really can stop the process. CD: That’s absolutely true. We’re on the rise and

the outcome is assured. That is exactly true, and that is what the Pleiadians are saying. We don’t have to struggle anymore. No matter how things appear, the struggle is over, it’s behind us, and we need to step more and more into that truth and to choose what brings us joy. Choose what brings us joy in the moment, and then everything else will naturally unfold as it’s supposed to, but we’re not supposed to do things we don’t like. We’re not supposed to make things difficult. It’s about choosing that which feels right to you in your heart, and just be in the moment. Anything you think you know, you don’t, so don’t even try and work things out. Just breathe, be, and just take one step at a time — and slow down, tremendously. We’re being asked to really slow down and just witness ourselves and witness what’s around us and take in the beauty. Take in the light of the sun. Take in the wind on our faces. Take in the simple beautiful moments. That’s really very, very important right now, because that is what has truth in it. a For more information on Christine Day and her work as the Pleiadian Ambassador, visit www. christinedayonline.com. LoveLoveLove by Bob Fickes Last of a three-part series Love is an important topic as a human being. They say that love is the only virtue that remains in human beings at this time of life. We have just about eliminated everything else. But, we don’t really know what it is. Love has many faces. There is love of our family, love of our pets, love of nature, romantic love. It’s like a roller coaster: it lifts us up one day and makes us fall down the next. But, so often we’re looking for love outside of ourselves, as if love were something that comes to us — and if I lose that thing that brought me love, I’ve lost love, too. But really, love is something that gets stimulated by things outside of us. It’s something that is inside — deep inside. It’s part of the God Consciousness in us that just gets covered over or we look in the wrong places to try to find it. The wrong place just means we need to look inside ourselves. Even when we’ve had an old relationship, and now we think we hate the person and if only we could just peel away that pain and peel away that anger, there is still love there. We need to recapture that love directly. We need to expand it so that it can become more useful and more present in our life every day. The Love mantra is a tool that without having to think about love or analyze love, it just stimulates love in our heart and naturally wakes it up so that we feel more loving every day. And that just keeps expanding and expanding until we feel love everywhere all the time. If we could do that, our whole life will change — and the world will change. As we change ourselves inside, the reflection of our life outside changes. The way we view everything changes, and it’s very contagious. It just takes a few people to start feeling their love and the rest of the world will follow. My teacher said it in an interesting way. He said, “Love is the glue of the Universe.” It holds everything together. Without love, we would create so much separation that everything would explode. Nothing could stay together. Love brings us together. When we feel love, we can even draw our enemy to us and we can sit down and communicate and say, “Let’s just talk about the differences in our ideas and just love each other and appreciate each other.” And gradually we’ll come to an agreement, an understanding. Anything is possible with love.

I had an interesting experience several years ago. Some of my Japanese students had their visas expire in Thailand, so we took them down to Malaysia to renew their visas. One night I decided, “Well, I’m just going to find a taxi driver and have them drive me around the city. I want to see what this place is like.” The taxi driver was Islamic, and Malaysia is an Islamic country. He said, “Oh, are you American?” I said, nervously, “Yes.” “Well, what do you believe?” “First of all, I don’t represent my country and what my government is doing and the people in general in America don’t represent what the government is doing, but for me, when I look around I see God everywhere. You are a God, this taxi is a God, every place that we’re going is God.” He said, “Oh, you must be Islam! That’s what we believe.” “Well,” I said, “I’m not really Islam, but I can embrace it’s thought.” Because it’s just a different language for describing the same reality. If God is here, if Consciousness is infinite, then that must be God — and if God is present in Consciousness, love must also be there. I believe everything is born from love; the whole Universe was created from love. The problem that we face today is that we also have ego mind that separates and focuses and tries to understand and tears it apart so many times that love disappears. It’s very simple. If we just start to generate more love in our hearts, I think we will solve a lot of the world’s problems. a Bob Fickes of Thailand will be presenting a three-day initiation of The Love Mantra meditation Sept. 11-13 at the University of Minnesota Continuing Education and Conference Center, St. Paul Campus, Room 135BD, 1890 Buford Ave., St. Paul. Veggie options abound this summer in half if large) 1/4 cup fresh cilantro (minced)

Sound Bites

by Julie McMahon I hope you have found time this summer to do a little gardening or visit your local Farmers Market! The market is a fun place to get fresh veggies, herbs, honey, jellies, fermented foods and flowers. It’s food for the soul as well as the plate. One of my favorite things to do is buy a variety of veggies in a rainbow of colors and figure out what I can create. What’s better than veggies? Veggies in Curry, of course! I hope you like this Thai-inspired dish as much as my family does!

This dish is best served over a bed of brown basmati or Jasmine rice. Get this going while you make the rest of this dish. In a medium-large saucepan, measure the curry paste, coconut milk and veggie broth. Whisk until smooth. Add the lemongrass or lemon zest. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat and simmer covered for 15 minutes. Remove and discard the lemongrass. Stir in the fish sauce. Add the squash, zucchini, cauliflower, broccoli, carrot, green onions and mushrooms and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer, partially covered, for about 10 minutes or until veggies are tender. Serve over rice and garnish with cilantro. This recipe will serve 4. a

Astro Rayology: ageless wisdom in self-discovery by William Meader It has been said that the purpose of life is to introspectively find oneself. Indeed, the ancient Greek aphorism to “know thyself” is profoundly true and holds the key to spiritual living. Though there are many methods of self-discovery available to the serious seeker, the Ageless Wisdom places great emphasis upon two powerful approaches: the Science of the Seven Rays and Esoteric Astrology. And, because they have an intimate relationship with each other, the blending of both has sometimes been called Astro Rayology. An understanding of the Seven Rays is a central feature of the Ageless Wisdom. It maintains that all that exists is a manifestation of seven divine qualities of consciousness. These rays intermix in differing proportions leading to the vast diversity of forms we see within Creation. Often insight into the nature of each of the rays can be intuited through the titles that historically designate them:   1st

Ray: The Ray of Will and Power Ray: The Ray of Love and Wisdom   3rd Ray: The Ray of Active Intelligence and Adaptability   4th Ray: The Ray of Harmony through Conflict   5th Ray: The Ray of Concrete Knowledge and Science   6th Ray: The Ray of Idealism and Devotion   7th Ray: The Ray of Ceremonial Order and Magic

  2nd

When seeking to know thyself, it is important to realize that every human soul is found upon one of these seven streams of consciousness, and that to know one’s soul ray is to know the very

purpose of one’s life. For example, an individual whose soul is upon the second ray will be inclined to serve humanity via educational initiatives or the healing arts. Conversely, a fifth-ray soul will likely be drawn to serve human need through scientific inquiry and research. A deep inquiry and understanding of the seven rays is, therefore, well advised. It facilitates an awareness of one’s spiritual purpose, and is truly an adventure in self-discovery. Much can be learned of the soul’s nature by introspectively looking at ourselves through the lens of the Seven Rays. Yet, it is not always the purity of the ray that is easiest to detect within ourselves. Because the rays are seeking to express through an imperfect personality, their essential nature is frequently distorted. For instance, an individual whose soul is upon the sixth ray tends to engage with life through an idealistic perspective. Yet, this can become distorted by the impurities existing with the soul’s outer garment — the personality. Such distortion can often result is rigid idealism and blind devotion. An honest selfappraisal is therefore essential. As mentioned earlier, there is an important connection between the Seven Rays and Esoteric Astrology. This is because each of the rays finds expression through various signs and planets evident within the zodiacal wheel. For example, Uranus is the custodian of the seventh ray within one’s natal chart. Given this, knowing the position (sign and house) of Uranus in the birth chart speaks to how this particular ray is seeking expression in one’s life. The same can be said when considering the fourth ray   see

planet of Mercury, or Pluto as the carrier of the first ray, or Saturn as the wielder of karma and the carrier of the third ray. Indeed, Esoteric Astrology provides remarkable insights into one’s life through the tapestry of rayological energies weaving though one’s natal chart. The study of the Seven Rays in combination with Esoteric Astrology is incredibly useful when an individual is driven to discover his/ her soulful nature — the authentic self, deep within. Knowing the soul ray speaks volumes as to the nature of one’s spiritual purpose in life. The soul within each of us desires to demonstrate its gesture of upliftment in support of humanity’s betterment. Recognizing your soul ray (as well as the astrological forces that support it) is therefore of enormous value. In truth, such knowledge provides an enriching perspective on the most fundamental enigma that each of us inevitably faces. That is, the mystery of who we are, and what we have come here to do. a William Meader will be presenting an Astro Rayology Workshop in the Twin Cities on October 9-10 at Spirit United, 3204 Como Boulevard SE, in Minneapolis. September horoscope: Transformation with Pluto going direct this month power of your mind to be a better communicator.

Lunar Adventures

by Kathie Anderson Another set of transforming eclipses occurs this month: a partial solar eclipse in Virgo, on 9/13; and a total lunar eclipse in Aries, on 9/27. The transformational planet Pluto, himself, which went retrograde shortly after the last set of eclipses, six months ago, will go direct two days before this lunar eclipse and play a major role in both eclipses. Moreover, Venus will go direct (9/6) and Mercury will go retrograde (9/17), this month. So, transformation is the theme!

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)… Your career and/or public status is on fire! You will be recognized for your accomplishments, now, perhaps on a whole new professional level. Are you expressing your personal mission? If not, this is a good time to recapture a dream and invest in your talents. It is possible to experience freedom in your career. on, and you could suddenly head in a new direction. Open your mind!

Aries (Mar. 21-Apr. 19)…Does your personal style and approach to life fully reflect who you are and work within your relationships? Your public self is undergoing a major transformation, and you need to grow beyond your daily habits and work routines. Now is the time to learn new skills, and to change your appearance to fit your work identity.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)…You may be concerned about your security. Something beyond your control, such as the downsizing of your workplace, may be taking place, right now. If you are lacking confidence in yourself, you need to examine the way you think. You need to change your beliefs and have faith. You have gifts that will support you.

Taurus (Apr. 20-May 20)…What old beliefs do you need to let go of and transform, regarding work and family, rest and play in your life? This is a good time to take time off of work and have fun with your romantic partner, children and/ or family. Take a long-distance trip and/or spend time in your home, enjoying the simple pleasures in life.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)…You are in the process of developing a new identity and way of being in the world, and must undergo an honest stripping down of what’s inessential, in order to discover what’s lasting and true. What do you really value in life? Do you believe you are worth it? Go for what you desire, but don’t bulldoze others.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)…Are you expressing your Soul Essence? Let go of fears around being rejected by your social network or tribe, and choose your personal Truth. If you don’t know what your personal Truth is, go on an artist’s date — try things you’ve never done before — and discover a buried treasure within yourself. Follow your heart.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)…Do you feel like others are seeing you for who you are? Would you like to express a part of yourself that maybe you haven’t allowed to come out before? Now is the time to just “be” with others. Sharing interests with someone is what makes you happy, but first you need to let go of an old way of being in relationship.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)…Now is the time to invite new ways of thinking into your world. Say “hello” to your neighbor, take a class, learn, teach or rearrange your furniture to give you a new perspective. You could be offered a new job that makes you rethink the path you’re

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)…Let go of old habits around daily work routines, as well as self-defeating psychological and health habits, and claim your most authentic self, instead. You should have a lot of energy to put into business/career activities. Listen to your intuition, and speak your Truth. Harness the

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan.19)… What fears undermine you? This set of eclipses could have you contemplating the meaning of existence. Search below the surface to face your demons and uncover your Soul Essence. Let go of superficial layers of your character. In the end, you’ll have a solid foundation to grow and work from. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)…You are about to begin a magical or mystical journey when the eclipses open up a rabbit hole for you to travel to Wonderland. It’s time for you to go beyond the four walls of your mind, and shift your perceptions. Nothing is solid or permanent in this world. Stuff is an illusion. So, let go of all you think you know, and explore strange and unusual realms. Pisces (Feb. 19-Mar. 20)…Are your relationships keeping pace with who you are today? It’s time to grow within at least one significant partnership. You may end up purging a friend, but know that you can also attain more meaningful relationships, at this time. Work cooperatively on relationship problems. Intimacy can be achieved through sharing your thoughts. a Kathie Anderson, M.A., C.C.H.T., R.M.T., is a healer, astrologer and writer who guides others to reach their highest potential through her private practice, Lunar Adventures. The New Frontier: Leaving cancer behind by Cheryl Hiltibran Four years ago this month, I started a journey that began with, “You have breast cancer.” More than 20 years earlier I had been told by an intuitive, “You like a challenge. It helps you to focus.” That challenge came when I chose not to follow the allopathic / medical approach to treatment. Instead, I started on an uncharted path using alternative methods to heal. This gave me a keen sense of focus and life purpose, to raise my own consciousness about the internal process of healing. My full attention was needed at every step and every turn. In the midst of what appeared to be darkness, there was light. It was not a light from outside shining onto my path, but an inner light that revealed what step or action to take. It was not always easy for me to discern each of the steps. However, it became a true test of my ability to listen, act, receive feedback, gather understanding and continue the process in faith. The success indicators I used to measure my results were the returning feelings of vitality, increment by increment. The Journey Into Cancer

Honestly, I must say, prior to my cancer diagnosis I was not living from my best and highest self. My need and desire to be loved and valued by others was so great that I would adjust myself to fit what others wanted for me and from me. I did not realize that through these “adjustments” for others, an inner conflict was waged. Inner resentments and self-hatred took residence. Ultimately, the disease invaded the very symbol of nurturance, my left breast. The body’s left side represents femininity. I was doing a poor job of nurturing myself. I had betrayed myself. I ate well, exercised, and worked in a career that felt meaningful and was connected to my purpose — to raise consciousness — yet my inner struggle eventually lead the deterioration of my health. Instead of using a fighting stance toward my cancer, I befriended it. My friend let me know I needed to take corrective action and reset my life’s course. The journey through healing without any medical interventions — lumpectomy, radiation, chemotherapy or hormone therapy — required me “to thy own self be true.” A Step-by-Step Intuitive Process

I turned in and listened from within. Let me explain that “listening” means seeing and feeling for understanding, as well as hearing. The following are the steps I used to dissolve the cancer, and anyone can use them to complete a major life transition, heal from a trauma, or reconnect to your life’s purpose: Commit to getting though the challenge.   Doubt is a detriment; leave it out completely. Trust, develop, and use your intuitive abilities.   My definition of intuition is that it is the communication and relationship with the Divine presence of God, which all of us can have.

Hold an intentional receptivity to getting   clarity of your very next step. I phrase it as a question, “What is the very next thing I am to do — (to heal from cancer, to make the decision about…, etc.)? Go silent, rise out of the fear, the anger, and   the sadness. Allow information to come to you, as if it is   floating into you. When describing my intuitive abilities to others, I say, “It’s out there. All I do is pull it out of the air.” Let the communication settle into you so that   it makes sense what action is necessary to take. One clear example is when I received the message, “Go to an indigenous healer.” That set me on the path of finding one. Take the actions (this is an imperative)   and notice what becomes different. Witness the changes, results and how they have improved or altered the current circumstances. Only you can determine their benefit. Get confirmation and affirmation that you are   still on the path by returning to silence and reconnecting with the universal wisdom of God Give thanks and appreciation for each positive   change that occurs. And take reparative action when it is evident that you made mistakes, errors or caused injury to yourself and others. These “side steps” help you discern between what is working and what is not. Learn from them, make peace with them and stay the course. Repeat the process for each step until your are   clearly on the other side of the challenge.   Bring closure. Celebrate your successful completion and your ability to have grown through the experience. Celebrate in an authentic, meaningful, and reverent way. Last December, friends joined me in a celebration, and my friend, Jeff Grundtner facilitated the Celebration. It was a wonderful way for me to claim that I was now re-entering life with a deepened intuitive ability for serving others as an intuitive energy healer and teacher. The New Frontier

Looking back, it’s obvious that to each side of the path fear lurked. By staying on the path, I came out of the darkness guided by the “light from within.” The light of Divinity shines through us to light the path in front of us. By developing your intuitive abilities, you will be able to navigate the treacherous territories in the precise manner needed. Intuition is a powerful way to engage The Divine Spirit and have your Divinely given gifts be received and valued. I remain in the world to help others connect to their own intuition and to help others be on their rightful path. I once again commit to my life purpose — to raise consciousness.a Cheryl Hiltibran is an Intuitive Energy Healer who helps clients overcome trauma, make major life transitions, and discover, connect or recommit to their life purpose. REFLECTIONS ON SERVICE & VOLUNTEERING Spirit Leaves

by Janet Michele Red Feather A British friend remarked, “You Americans trivialize everything.” Despite the initial semblance of condescension, there’s truth in the elegant gentleman’s assertion. When it comes to deep apprehension of the Great Mystery, our culture is the fast food of contemplative existence. We want our spirituality in bumper stickers. We represent religion in knickknacks. In cultivating generosity, we blithely perform “random acts of kindness” and then boast about them. Serving others should be natural, for there is no separation. We are all a part of the Great Spirit. By now, we must recognize the familiar water analogy used to explain our human existence. From the vast ocean of the Great Tao we stream forth and descend from clouds as individual droplets of rainwater. We run in rivulets through rivers and creeks. Rapidly, we wind our way toward the enormous ocean. Does it then matter which drop we are? Are particular drops even distinguishable? When we pray, at the end of our prayers, we say, “Numak k ki ami wa,” which means, “All My Relations” in Mandan. Other times, we say “Mitakuye Oyasin,” which means the same in Lakota. This phrase is a recognition that there is no real distinction between people within our Spiritual circle helping to fulfill the prophecies, and people beyond our circle who travel different paths. We are all related. Several Native American tribes have taught that at one time, we were all One People. So we diversified a bit: is that any reason to think hierarchically? Wouldn’t

we feel a little better about everything if we held in our hearts the maxim, “Nothing greater, nothing lesser?” We are all equal and Sacred beings, worthy of the utmost care. We give this care to ourselves, and with ease and grace, we extend this care to others. In doing so, we actually joyously affirm our own existence. Consider, at the conclusion of this brief stint we call a lifetime, what will we have we contributed? I can hear Cedric Red Feather’s voice demanding, asking, “That woman there, she has gone to every workshop under the sun. She’s met Shamans, Medicine Women, Healers, and Road Men, but tell me this: what has she done for the People? Whom has she helped? What is she going to do with all of this knowledge?” Being of service need not imply martyrdom. We have needs, others have needs. We can give without “running out,” for the Universe is a plenum. We need not fear that, in giving to others, we deplete ourselves. In fact, the opposite is true. Although we don’t give for this purpose, it’s like making a deposit into our karmic bank. When we give with our whole heart — without expectation of thanks or return — we immediately notice positive enhancements in our own lives. When we give privately — without witness

or fanfare — we gain even more. We can offer our time, energy, prayers, guidance or financial help to others without announcing what we’ve done. Cedric wisely admonishes, “Boast of the goodness of a deed and the goodness is gone.” There is nothing grandiose or admirable about being of service or volunteering. They are as natural as breathing. We would all be exemplary human beings were we to spend every waking moment, in some way, quietly, ineluctably improving the lot of every living being. Volunteering is, in a sense, an odd concept. It sounds as though one is not predisposed to act for the benefit of others but will now reluctantly make a deliberative effort to contribute. When we undertake to live spiritually — consciously — every breath is a prayer. In that sense, every breath becomes an act of volunteering. When a person lives in the eternal now — in the precise present moment — his happiness becomes real and pervasive. It is then that his generosity and service to others overflow naturally outward from the fountain of his inner tranquility. Simply by meditating and becoming more peaceful and light-filled, we can enhance the vibrational frequency of everyone on the planet. Recycling is certainly helpful, but living in such a way that we emit love and light will more than cover the nurturing of our darling Mother, the Earth, and our beloved Father, the Sky. a Janet Michele Red Feather, J.D., M.A., has taught literature and composition for 18 years at the university, state, tribal and community college levels. She is currently a tenured English faculty member at Normandale Community College. Janet enjoys her role as Ceremonial Singer for Native American ceremonies, singing traditional songs in Mandan and Lakota. She made a career shift into teaching after serving nearly eight years as a defense litigator in California. Her life changed significantly after she traveled to North Dakota in 1993 to fast and pray for a way of life. She welcomes correspondence at JanetRedFeather77@ gmail.com. Copyright © 2015. dolphin dreams come true BY volunteering by Cara Gubbins Have you ever had a dream lurking inside of you that you weren’t even aware of? And then all of a sudden it bursts out of you, a longing so strong it’s like a physical need? That’s what happened to me in my junior year in high school when my mom brought me to see an independent film showing at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. The film was Dolphin by Hardy Jones, and I was mesmerized not only by the underwater scenes of dolphins swimming in the warm, clear waters around the Bahamas but also by his scientific effort to communicate with wild dolphins. After the film, Hardy invited audience members to join him as a volunteer on future research expeditions. I had to go. My mom made me a deal: if I could raise half the money, she would pay the other half. I immediately got a weekend job at a coffee house, saving every cent I earned. The next summer, I was a research volunteer living on a boat in the Bahamas studying dolphins! Every day, we’d sit on the decks scanning the horizon and waiting for dolphins to swim by. When they did, the scientists quickly donned their snorkeling gear, jumped in the water and did their research. Right behind them, the volunteers suited up and jumped in the water, too. Our job was to identify individuals by their spotting patterns and nicks and scars on their bodies. On our last day at sea, a huge group of at least thirty dolphins surrounded the boat. Everyone raced into the water. Three dolphins singled me out and stayed with me the entire time. One swam on my

left, one on my right and the third was underneath me. We swam as a unit, up to the surface to breathe, down to the sandy bottom, circling in and around each other. As I swam shoulder to shoulder with the dolphins, I turned my head to the right and caught the eye of that dolphin. She looked directly back at me and our eyes locked. There was such depth in that soft, brown eye that I knew that she could see through me, see into me, see into the core of my being. I felt like she was looking into my soul. Gazing into her eye, I got lost in her. I felt like I, too, could see deep into her soul. In a flash, I knew there was much more to her than I had ever imagined. This dolphin was more than flesh and blood swimming unconsciously through the ocean. She had a soul. I looked in her eye and saw myself there. There was no difference between us. We just inhabited two different forms. Back on the boat, I knew that I had found my calling. My heart, mind and spirit were united in a quest to learn everything there was to know about dolphins. When I got back home, I read everything about dolphins I could get my hands on and began dreaming about my career studying dolphins. I started as a volunteer at Sea World as a college student. Then I studied motherinfant social development in captive bottlenose dolphins for my master’s thesis and

the behavioral ecology of coastal bottlenose dolphins in South Carolina for my doctoral dissertation. Becoming a dolphin scientist was the first gift I received from my volunteer experience in high school. But there was another gift unfolding in my life. I longed for the other part of my original dream — to communicate with wild dolphins. Looking into that dolphin’s eye convinced me that all beings — humans and animals — are divine. We are kindred spirits residing in different forms. As a human, I believed this to be true, but as a scientist, I wanted to test my belief as a hypothesis. After completing a year-long psychic training program, I tackled my research project, interviewing dozens of animals and sharing their spiritual lessons and messages in my book Divine Beings. In the process, I received my second volunteering gift, I found my life purpose: to be a messenger for animals, giving them a voice in the human world. a Cara Gubbins is an author, intuitive and coach who offers intuitive readings for pets and people, classes to help you connect with your pets and your spirit guides, and transformational coaching and retreats to connect you to the life of your dreams. HOSPICE CARE EXPERIENCE OFFERS NEEDED VALIDATION by Kimberly Wencl I had been thinking about becoming a hospice volunteer for a while. It would come to me as a passing thought every now and then. I considered it for a bit and then put it aside. Little did I know just how soon and how clearly my indecision would be reconciled. Homestead Hospice House is on the outskirts of town on what used to be a farm place. There is a windmill and a few trees, but farm fields mostly surround the house. And, it looks like a home — not a place of death. I had a tour shortly before it opened, but I’ve had no other contact with it, other than to read the obituaries of many a local who had spent their last days and hours there. I became familiar with death in the most painful of ways. My oldest daughter, Elizabeth, died in 2003 from smoke inhalation from a fire in her duplex just a few blocks from the University of Minnesota where she had just begun her sophomore year. It truly was a “baptism by fire” and an experience I wouldn’t wish on the fiercest of enemies. Almost ten years have passed since that fateful day, and I have come to accept that the physical presence of my beautiful daughter is gone forever. Her spirit, however, continues to burn bold and bright in my life, giving me the needed comfort and peace I so desperately sought in those early days, weeks and months. My 82-year-old mother-in-law, Betty, had several health problems, but she managed them completely on her own, and she lived in a beautiful apartment just a few blocks from our home. She didn’t leave home much, but she was fiercely independent and had a love for family that could not be rivaled. On April 2, Betty was busy in her kitchen when she made a sudden turn, lost her balance, and fell to the floor. Luckily, she had a lifeline around her neck. She pushed it and it wasn’t long before the authorities

were there to help get her to the hospital. Our local hospital determined that her hip had been badly broken, and it would be best to transfer her to Rochester, home of the Mayo Clinic, just a short 30 miles away. It was so nice to know that she was receiving the best care the medical world could offer. She underwent surgery to repair her shattered hip. She came through with flying colors and we all breathed a sigh of relief and began to focus on what we thought would come next — a rehabilitation center to get her back on her feet again and a return to her home. It became a rocky road, however. Betty’s ongoing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, as well as congestive heart failure, was wreaking havoc with her hip rehabilitation. She was well enough to move to the rehab center, but after a few days she suffered intense breathing issues and ended up back in the hospital. This cycle went on for an entire month. Finally, as her family, we had to accept that, despite the fact that her hip was healing nicely, her breathing issues were not. In fact, they were chronic, and they would not improve. We were told they would only get worse. Betty was completely exhausted and we could all see that she couldn’t fight much longer. Our thought pattern completely changed, and we knew that the best thing for Betty was a move to hospice to be pain free and comfortable. At that point, all we wanted was rest and peace for Betty, the matriarch of our family — a woman who was widowed at the young age of 50 after the sudden, unexpected death of my fatherin-law Richard in 1979 from a heart attack. I wasn’t that close to my mother-in-law, even though I had been a part of her family for over 30 years. Yet, that day, something compelled me to focus solely on her, and I found myself continually standing at her right shoulder, patting her head, bringing cool cloths to keep her comfortable, and feeding her an occasional bite of ice cream. The atmosphere at the hospice house was home-like and welcoming. The nurses and staff were there not only for Betty’s needs, but for ours as well. Even though we would only be with them for a short 12 hours, they very quickly felt like family. I remember toying with the thought that,

at some point, I would whisper in Betty’s ear to please give Liz a hug for me when she saw her. With Betty resting comfortably and at the urging of the nurses, everyone except one daughter went home for the night. You need your sleep, the nurses told us, and we agreed — but not until we decided that one of us would stay with Betty at all times. Just a few short hours after returning home, our phone rang with the news that Betty was gone. She had slipped away during the early morning hours with her daughter asleep by her side. After taking a few deep breaths and letting the news sink in, I realized that I no longer had the opportunity to ask Betty to hug Liz. As soon as I had that thought, however, I was immediately immersed with an intense sense of love and peace and the knowing that my mother-in-law was now with my daughter and she was indeed giving her that hug that I had only thought about. A few seconds later, that thought was gone. But, it was immediately replaced with a complete and utter sense of gratitude that I knew was my mother-in-law’s way of thanking me for helping her in her final hours. My brother-in-law related a few days later that although he had been on vacation in Georgia when he got the news, his intense sadness was quickly replaced by an extreme sense of peace — a peace given to him by his mother that there was no need to be sad. She was in a better place, she was no longer suffering, and she was reuniting with those she loved. It’s been a few weeks now and these experiences have had a chance to sink in. My answer about becoming a hospice volunteer clearly had been answered, and I have begun the process to make that happen. Someday soon, I hope to provide the same peace and love that we received to other families who will move their loved one to hospice, just as we did. I consider it a gift — a gift given to me by God and by Betty. I have been blessed, and now, I can be a blessing to others. a Kimberly Wencl is a Homestead Hospice House Volunteer, a writer and a speaker who lives in southern Minnesota. Words of Wisdom by Nadine Penny Put your best foot forward this September and celebrate World Reflexology Week (September 21-27) with a revitalizing reflexology session! So, what is reflexology? Providers describe it as the application of pressure to points on the feet, hands and ears to promote health in other organs and systems of the body. According to the Mayo Clinic, the National Cancer Institute and the National Institute of Health supported several studies on the benefits of reflexology, and found it may help reduce pain, alleviate anxiety and depression and enhance relaxation and sleep. And of course, reflexology also soothes tired feet, which makes it an autumnal winner for us all, body, mind and sole! a Nadine Penny attained her M.A. from the University of Denver in Counseling Psychology. Nadine lives in Minnetonka where she works as a medium, life issues reader and Reiki master. Contact her by email at nadine.penny@gmail.com and visit www.nadinepenny.com. Copyright © 2015.
