A Profound Evolutionary Shift is Coming A Pleiadian Message BY

BELOVED ONES, WE GREET YOU. There is a rapid evolutionary transition about to take place on your planet. This time heralds in a profound new phase on your Earth plane. You are going to enter into a more tumultuous time within the human experience of 3rd dimensional drama, and simultaneously, you will be moving through a life-changing transition within your sacred multidimensional nature. The full energetic of planet Earth and your personal unique energetic framework are about to move through an intense repositioning. There will be a metamorphic shift within your personal energetic systems coinciding with the opening of a high-frequency, multidimensional grid within the planet. A profound new energetic cycle is going to be set in motion and it will propel itself within the environment of Earth throughout the month of August. Through a series of magnetic core shifts, a direct pathway of alignment will be forged to the sun. These formed connections will set in motion deep transformative shifts by mid-month. They will strongly impact the planet’s energetic configurations, and there will be a releasing of a series of veils. These openings will maneuver the energetic grids to a sacred configuration throughout the Earth plane, naturally aligning and birthing a communion, activating a series of pulses of light communication between Earth and your resident Universe. the magnetic core of the planet will activate a deepening of inner alignment within your heart; a new chamber within your heart will be unveiled and made active. This new chamber is designed to interact intimately within an alignment to the sun’s rays. It will allow the sun’s rays to naturally illuminate your sacred heart; picture the sun’s rays streaming from within the chamber of your heart and flowing outwards. We liken this process to witnessing your heart open up like a bud of a flower as it opens and interacts with the sun’s rays. In some way your heart will hold an extension of the essence of the sun. Your heart is about to transform, moving into a new transmutation phase of awakening. There is an ongoing destiny call that is and has been moving outwards to those of you on the path. There is the strong call for you to let go on a different level than ever before. This calling is coming in the form of a frequency, a vibration of light, which is beckoning you, leading you into a role that you have already pre-agreed to play. Your heart has the potential to open up into a new world of reality, revealing to you Truth that will allow you to live from a different perspective and flourish in your day-to-day lives. Your ego mind will not understand any aspect of this process that is about to be revealed to you within your heart. Expect this and know that the ego mind cannot interfere with your process in any way. You can anticipate this lack of understanding to be part of your ongoing human experience. During this time frame you must continue to open up and let go, allowing your awareness to be moved deeper within the terrain of your Higher Self reconnections within your heart.

BRILLIANT RELATIONSHIP As a part of humanity, you will go through a transitional realignment of consciousness. As you dimensionally and energetically are repositioned within your heart, you are birthed into a brilliant, aligned relationship within the sun’s rays. At this juncture your hearts will be able to form new conscious bonds with each other. There will be recog-

nition of each other’s heart frequency, from your heart to another. This is going to allow an acceleration of the forming of groups, partnerships coming together and being able to move beyond the human trait of separation. These changes within the heart chamber will allow successful communities to form. Through this communion connection within your hearts, you will be able to develop community alliances through telepathic communion. There is much to celebrate as you take this next step forward on your path. Know that each one of you is being held and supported as you choose to breathe, let go and be in the moment within this vast changing landscape of your sacred heart. This time is about you being willing to open to a deeper transition within your own multidimensional makeup that will be accessed within your heart. The sun’s role is to illuminate and then hold a mirror steady within, allowing a re-definition of your light nature, enabling you to glimpse the sacred. The illumination of the sun’s rays is designed to flow within the brain, creating potent openings within the telepathic center. These openings will enable you to realign your consciousness to the collective communion pulses held within the Universe. You will develop and work with the Universal community through the re-establishment of your telepathic connections, which will fulfill further aspects of your mission.

SHINE FORTH This is your time to shine forth your unique brilliance, to allow the opening of yourself on another level, to feel and discover the wonderment of your heart’s illumination. This is the time for magic to be revealed to your Self. This time is about you, no one else. This is your sacred pathway being opened, revealed to you, by you. You get to choose a moment in time to be in a state of stillness within your own heart as your awareness opens into the illuminated space of your heart through the sun’s rays. Trauma-informed Care a Priority in Minnesota Schools Miss Kendra Programs — which work to transform school culture and create highly effective learning environments by actively addressing trauma before it causes disciplinary or symptomatic problems — are expanding to several schools throughout the Twin Cities metro area. The program is featured in the awardwinning documentary Resilience: The Biology of Stress & The Science of Hope, directed by James Redford. Through a jointly sponsored effort led by Minnesota-based Sauer Family Foundation and the Carolyn Family Foundation, the trauma program is making a great impact across the Twin Cities. “We are grateful to have the opportunity to implement the Miss Kendra programs to build the capacity of children and adults to manage trauma and create school cultures of respect and support,” said Sara Paul, assistant superintendent at White Bear Lake Area Public Schools. White Bear Lake Area Public Schools is planning to implement the program districtwide by 2024. Program founder and CEO David Johnson, Ph.D., said, “The Miss Kendra Programs differ from other trauma approaches by following a preventive, public health framework based on reaching all students through brief but frequent contact and early intervention. The results we have seen in Minnesota schools are consistent with those we see in schools across the U.S., including substantial decreases in incidents of fighting and aggression, suspensions and office referrals, as well as a reduction in overall stress levels among the students.” In addition to working with Minnesota’s K-12 schools, Miss Kendra Programs also are partnering with the School of Education faculty at the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis to develop a trauma/stress component in their standard curriculum. The Twin Cities also will see new programs at Vadnais Heights Elementary and Birch Lake Elementary in White Bear Lake, St. Paul City Charter School in St. Paul, and in the high school at East Side Neighborhood Services in Minneapolis for students with special needs. The Paladin Alternative High School in Blaine, which already has a rich trauma-informed culture, will also begin implementation of the program this fall. within your heart. Take moments now to actively choose, to birth a series of building blocks by bringing your awareness within your heart cells for conscious alignment. You are being asked to commit to individual moments of stillness within your day, to prepare, and to allow, the path to be established for you to receive a higher perspective of your sacred nature. You can achieve this by the simple process: holding your heart and consciously choosing to open your awareness within the space of your heart. Always place your palms on your chest area, and bring your awareness to your heart. Feel the physical connection, of your hands on your chest, and then bring your conscious breath to that physical connection. Breathe and let go into that connection.

CONSCIOUS BREATH Remember, the Conscious Breath says, “Yes, I am willing to let go” and “Yes, I am willing to receive my light.” The letting go aligns you deeper to this physical connection. Witness how you begin to enter the energetic space of your own heart. Whether you see, sense or feel the essence of your heart does not matter. What matters most is that you are creating a building block, a step, a pathway to your heart. This is a simple, natural step-bystep process. Each breath is you consciously choosing to connect to your heart. You can achieve this because your heart is ready for this next step. This is the time to create and open up to your Self in a different way. You are ready to receive and open up to this other element of your sacred nature. The time is right for you to receive. This process is about you receiving you! Choosing to be still and aligning to your heart is automatically changing the old cycles in your life. As you hold your heart, the past cycles of self-sabotage can fall away and you will never be the same again. You are re-patterning the brain as you link within your heart in this way. Remember, each moment is multidimensional. This means that there are unlimited experiences that you can receive in any ordinary, given moment. You can reach within the moment and move into a deepening experience of your heart’s multidimensional connections. PROCESS: ACTIVATING THE SUN WITHIN YOUR HEART, CREATING THE LINK Note: This process is to be done after August 14: 1. Hold your palms of your hands to your chest. 2. Bring your awareness to where you are physically connecting to your chest. 3. Connect to your heart using the conscious breath (inhale through the mouth, exhale through the mouth) and let

go into the space. 4. Stay physically connected to the heart, chest area while you open your awareness to the sun. 5. Move your awareness towards the sun with your eyes closed. Be still. Breathe and let go within the energy of the Sun. Remember, the sun has a consciousness, an energy all its own. 6. Bring your awareness deeper within the experience of being with the sun, whether you see, sense or feel the essence of the sun. Breathe right into the experience, and let go. 7. Bring the sound right into where you find yourself. Sound ELTAH (pronounced el tar). 8. Feel yourself going deeper within the sun’s essence. Breathe, let go within the space. Now use the sound again, ELTAH. Use the sound again, ELTAH. 9. Now breathe and let go and bring your awareness gently, slowly into your hands on your heart. Feel the essence of the sun begin to flow within your heart cells. 10. Bring your sound, ELTAH, right into your chest area and feel a deepening of the link of the sun’s rays coming into the heart cells. 11. Use your conscious breath. Bring it right into your heart cells, like a soft wind. Breathe and let go. 12. Let your awareness move deeper within the heart cells, the whole chest area, just be in your experience. Feel the essence that is here. 13. Bring the sound, ELTAH, right into your heart space. Feel the essence of the sun flow deeper within the heart. 14. Use the conscious breath and let go into the space that you find yourself. 15. Open up your awareness within the space and breathe, and feel the space expand. Each time you complete this process, you reposition yourself on yet another level. This is your time to shine forth the light rays from the inner chamber of your heart and be witnessed. You are by nature a magical being, made from love. Your capacity to shine is unlimited and the sun’s role is to support you by acting as a mirror, reflecting to you your own brilliance. This is the time for further revelations of your Self to be unearthed. You are the only one who can unveil yourself to you. Affirm: ‘I Express My Truth’ A Monthly Affirmation BY

EACH OF US EXPERIENCES a personal truth that belongs to us alone. It is subjective and unique. I invite you to use the affirmation, “I express my truth,” to continually make choices in the ever-present moment that create the circumstances necessary to recognize and open channels for your self-expression. Last month we talked about cultivating the safety necessary to create openness. We talked about the importance of making space for our thoughts and feelings to be expressed within our own minds and bodies. This month we can take that one step further to explore what it might look like to let those thoughts and feelings out in ways that create balance, beauty and an example of authenticity that shows others that it is safe for them to express themselves, as well. We create barriers to self-expression when we don’t feel safe. Perhaps we are afraid that if we are truly seen, we won’t be accepted, or that there won’t be a space for us. We might fear that our inner truth will break something if it doesn’t fit into the mold we are told we must abide by. We might fear that we are too much or not enough or even that we are broken or missing pieces. We might believe that our truth will be taken from us if we express it. Love is here to change all of this. Let us remember that fear is not the enemy but rather a valuable part of ourselves that expresses in order to show us that we have, again and always, the opportunity to choose love.

BEYOND OUR BARRIERS When we choose to express beyond our barriers, we are consciously choosing love. We are bringing our fears into the light of awareness so that they may tell their stories and transform into their love-based counterparts. For example, jealousy becomes appreciation, doubt becomes confidence, lack becomes abundance, guilt becomes forgiveness and anger becomes inspired action rather than a feeling of powerlessness. Love is the power, the fuel behind the change that we wish to see in our lives and our world. All we have to do is choose it and that power of choice can never be taken from us. There will be moments that choosing love looks simply like allowing our thoughts and emotions to exist within our own bodies and minds. It is here that we find anxiety dismantles. Rather than feeling a pressure to organize and make sense of our inner experience, we choose the first step to self-expression, which is simply acceptance. By accepting our thoughts and emotions, we are saying “Yes” to ourselves. We are 1 2  WWW.EDGEMAGAZINE.NET

listening, and by listening we are affirming, “You deserve the space to speak and you deserve to be heard.” This is an incredible act of self-love. This choice will begin to reorganize not only our internal neural pathways (patterns of thought and belief) but also our external environments, as our choices are now completely infused with the light of our inner awareness. It is truly each of our individual responsibilities to share our inner world. This is how we create! So, this month, use the affirmation, “I express my truth,” to guide you as you take a look at the walls that you have built around your heart and choose self-expression as the means to bring them down. Each brick in your walls is made of something valid and valuable, something that when acknowledged will transform into a great gift. Let it out! Together we can celebrate our differences and realize that no matter our personal context, we are all working on and toward the same things. As always, I invite you to look at back at my columns from December 2018 through now to build the support that you need to integrate this month’s affirmation. Remember, you are worth it. Everything you dream and wish to be, you are worth it. Your dreams may change but they will never die, so dig deep, give yourself the safety of a friend or a journal, or as I like to have, a stage! Go ahead and let it all move you.

BEING CHANGE The most important aspect of self-expression is to understand ourselves as being change, or, as being time. As we rest in the moment, we rest as the moment. We are the movement of the one energy, and it is this movement that allows us to experience ourselves as being. Whether we look backward in our memory or forward to our potential futures, we are choosing, in the moment, which filter we are looking through. This brings great importance to the way in which we talk to ourselves. How do you tell your own story? What is possible? What is off the table? Who do you tell yourself that you are and what reasons do you use to justify your narrative? All of these things are choices that we make in each moment, and we can make them with more awareness and freedom by simply saying to ourselves, “What you’re experiencing is real and valid and deserves to be expressed.” So I say this to you now: what you’re experiencing is real and valid and deserves to be expressed. Oftentimes our thoughts and feelings do not fit into our current model of understanding. That’s okay. As we allow ourselves the freedom to think and feel whatever we think and feel, we find that our belief structures change drastically to make space

for our truth to be heard and experienced in new ways. Similarly, we find that our external environment begins to shift to create channels for our inner world to be expressed. So, we might start with just noticing our thoughts and feelings and saying to ourselves, “I don’t understand this but here it is.” This alone changes our energetic pattern of movement, or “frequencies,” to align with new opportunities for self-expression. You’ll find that this practice of listening to yourself brings you others who are willing to listen. It will bring you artistic means and the support that you need to explore them. It will bring you the curiosity and passion that feels like the fire of aliveness within you that directs you toward the means of self-expression that will set your unique soul free. Through self-expression, we can choose to allow our lives to unfold in ways that uproot patterns of thought and create, not only new behaviors but new life circumstances and potential futures that fit our biggest, brightest dreams. Dreams never die, they simply sleep and transform.

WAKE THEM UP This month, go ahead and ask yourself, “What dreams do I have in hibernation?” Together we will wake them up. Dreams feel like aliveness. They feel like something calling you forward into a new space. Naturally, this process of becoming free will bring up our fears and limitations. It will show us all of the thoughts and the patterns of thought that tell us that we cannot be our fullest, most beautiful selves. It will say things like, “There is no space for you,” and “You are wrong or too much or not enough,” and “You can’t heal,” and “You are the only one.” This is an important voice. This is your subjective truth and it deserves the space to be felt and heard and expressed through your thoughts, emotions, art, movement and voice. Express it however you can and let it move. Because, that is what happens when fear is acknowledged — it becomes light again, and it flips to its alternative, which is love. I like to thank my fear when it arises for holding my hand and showing me the way back to love again and again. Fear is the means through which we see the stories we tell ourselves, and we see our opportunity to choose to tell our story differently. Choose love. Choose to express yourself. Developing, Sharpening Your Natural Intuition BY

Third of a 4-part series I TALK TO MY SELF. Oh, I don’t gab on about my opinions or “should” all over myself, but I do interact with my intuition. Gone are the days in spiritual living where energy only seemed to flow one direction, from Spirit on down to us. Now we are to interact with our Selves. Our life with our Spirit is like any other relationship in that communication is vital. I don’t just sit and wait for intuition to arrive. I invoke it, calling it forth to respond to my needs. This is best done with intention and reverence, but does not have to be ceremonial. This can be as much a part of our daily lives as using the phone to connect with a friend. I call on intuition to know what time is best for me to do things — make phone calls, plan a meeting, when to get groceries — the mundane, as well as those things more important to me. I get my information by seeing pictures inside my head and hearing words in my right ear. If I get a picture that is fuzzy or words that are unclear, I will ask Spirit to send me the information again in another way. I may then see a different picture or hear different words, or the answer may show up in my environment: TV, billboard, radio, etc. If I see a picture or hear words that are clear but could be interpreted several ways, I will also ask Spirit for clarity by sending a picture back to It, kind of saying “Is this what you meant?” For example, if I ask, “What is best for me to eat?” and I get a picture of asparagus, that can mean asparagus or green vegetables. So I may send back a picture of carrots, saying “Do you mean vegetables?” I may then get back a picture of broccoli, meaning “green

vegetables.” Feel free to dialogue with your Self. Don’t give up, for this just takes practice. Consistent use brings consistent results. Intuition is always present. It is only our awareness of it that varies. There are some things that enhance our awareness. Having clear chakras is one of these things. There are many ways to do this. Google to find them and try what you are drawn to, but do it on a regular basis. We get “dusty” just going through life. The following are the benefits of doing this: • A clear root chakra will keep you grounded. • A clear second chakra will keep you open to your creativity and how you sense the world. • A clear third chakra will keep you out of unhelpful fear and enhance your personal power, for it is our gut feeling chakra, where intuition resides. • A clear fourth chakra opens our heart to emotional awareness of our self and others.   • A clear fifth chakra is throat, being able to speak the Truth that we intuit. • A clear sixth chakra is our third eye, being able to connect to the higher dimension of Self to get spiritual perspective. third chakra, your gut. Gut senses earthly vibrations, the sixth chakra (third eye) and senses spiritual perspective. It is important they work together. • A clear seventh chakra is our gateway to our Higher Self.

EXERCISES FOR CLAIRAUDIENCE (ABILITY TO “HEAR”): 1. Close your eyes and tune into the sounds around you now. Separate out the various sounds, and focus on each one individually. Tune in to what you are hearing out of your left ear. Tune into what you are hearing out of your right ear. Are you hearing anything behind you? 2. Put on some music and listen. Instrumental music is best, classical may be the easiest. Pick out one instrument and follow it for a while, making it louder than all the rest. Now choose a different instrument and focus on that one for a while. Try several different instruments, one at a time. 3. While sitting quietly, just imagine sounds. Imagine the sound of running water, from the sink, a river, a hose, rain, any running water. Imagine the sound of laughter, someone you know, a TV laugh track, a giggling baby. Imagine the sound of a thunderstorm, rolling thunder, crashing thunder, a big bang thunder. Don’t Just Breathe BY

THE BABY THAT DRAWS his or her first breath is thus alive and now a resident of the dimension visited. It is not without breath that life survives. It is not without breathing that one continues to live. “Yes, yes,” you will say, “We know all that!” We are, after all breathers, even though we are too often prone to do it unconsciously and without deliberation. With the first breath, life begins. As life begins, purpose begins and projects itself into the mind of the breather. With every breath you purposefully take, it is you who can make the choice to rise above mediocrity. Consciously aware breathers are intentionally engaged in a gear that perpetually moves them forward with purpose towards a goal they are ever conscious of, even if it is not totally clear what the goal is at times. In taking the wheel and looking ahead, conscious breathing is being aware of the breath inhaled, being aware of wind exhaled and doing so with purpose, oftentimes with force. Conscious breathing is doing so while contemplating that the life that is inhaled and the waste that is exhaled is the life to another and the planet as a whole. Life is breathing and breathing is life — specifically, knowing and remembering that the very act of surviving by breathing is beyond explanation, and its capability to sustain life is beyond our comprehension when one tries to explain 1 6  WWW.EDGEMAGAZINE.NET

the source and design of air. Breathing is simple! Breathing consciously, on the other hand, requires awe and acceptance that the forces that sustain us are so simply complex that we cannot yet fully comprehend them. Who decided that simple breathing would fuel our every cell and enable us to live? Conscious acknowledgement of creation and life in all its inexplicable wonder grants that every breath will move your consciousness into a deeper, yet higher, realm of awareness. As you breathe, consider this fact and try to understand it: It only requires an impulse to raise your arm high in the air. Now, consider how that can be possible given the intricacies of anatomy of an arm, the blood flow, the nerve pulse, the muscle contraction and so forth. Yes, you are a miracle. The one who breathes consciously accepts miracles and, thus, accepts the Self as a miracle, as one and the same. Conscious breathing is breathing while being aware that if you stopped breathing you would not cease to exist. Conscious breathing is done in a manner that delivers the truth to you that each breath is connected to a huge vacuum in the atmosphere that provides the air you breathe. Conscious breathing is connecting to the Collective Consciousness that is the ultimate connection to the breath that is us, each and every one of us. To breathe consciously is:

• To be aware that it is not merely life that is important when compared to what wonders may transpire when we stop breathing. • Being consciously aware of the ability to choose the direction your energy moves is to know, breathing or not breathing, every breath is leading us somewhere and every exhalation propels us closer to that destination. • Consciousness grants that we are the pilot in control of the course we travel. With every breath, then, we must believe we are filled with purpose and with every breath we breathe, determined to find our highest self. Conscious breathing is done with purpose and deliberation until it, too, like autonomic breathing, becomes unconscious and breathing deliberately is not necessary. Thus, living with purpose becomes so automatic that it no longer requires thinking about it. Purpose thus becomes being. We seek what is in our heart with fervor as it is often viewed at the Seat of the Soul and from where loving energy exudes. Conscious Breathing in Action BY

CONSCIOUS BREATHING CAN BE as simple as a mindful practice of knowing when you are inhaling, or exhaling, and as complicated as advanced yogic pranayama techniques involving breath-holding (both in and out) while applying “locks.” Our conscious breath is a source of “medicine,” energy, serenity, rejuvenation, clarity, presence and empowerment. Luxuriate in a deep conscious breath, please, while I share a personal story. While leading trekking groups in the Andes and Himalayas for over a decade, hiking mountains, and climbing temples, never had I experienced a fear of heights. Yet, I found myself in shock on the top of Temple V, the second tallest structure in Tikal, Guatemala, gazing down across the jungle canopy, feeling completely incapacitated by sudden, full-blown acrophobia. Earlier, I’d climbed the temple with ease, and nonchalantly, sat on a ledge, watching spider monkeys play an arm’s length away in the tree tops. However, upon returning to descend the ladder, my stomach seemed to leap into my throat, rendering me nauseous and petrified. Momentarily, I felt myself teeter toward the ground, seemingly miles below. Slowly, I inched backwards and sidled into a sitting position with my back supported against the ancient rock wall, as far from the edge as possible. As vertigo began to subside I realized I’d stopped breathing, an invisible girdle of fear constricting my torso. I reminded myself to breathe as deeply and consciously as possible. I needed to just sit with these sensations for a moment. Actually, I thought helplessly, that was the only thing I could do. “Breathe low in the belly,” I heard myself instructing. “It’s impossible for panic to take over while breathing low in the belly.” This fear, this terrifying, sudden phobia of heights, had stunned me into paralysis. During so many journeys I’d aided others to climb temple steps all over the globe — Chichén-Itzá, Machu Picchu, Giza, Angkor Wat! And there I was, unable to move. The thought of even approaching the steep staircase took my breath away. Alternate nostril breathing to the rescue! Knowing this form of conscious breathing had always helped me gain a sense of calmness and balance, I commenced a simple variation. The shock started to dissipate, and as I began to breathe easier I almost laughed at the irony and times that I’d helped someone to ascend or descend some edifice, step by anxious step, always counseling “breathe!” I now understood what true bravery they’d displayed! I doubted then whether I had it myself. “All right, I must do this! Ca, ca, ca ccourrraaagggge!” I exhorted myself, thinking of the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz. “I must practice what I’ve preached or I could be up here a helluva long time!” Telling myself that I was going to be okay — it was only irrational fear — I crouched down onto all fours. With a slow, deliberate exhalation orchestrated to each movement, I began crawling backwards to the ladder. In this prostrated position I felt humbled, truly humbled.

Gradually inching to the platform, trepidation gripped me. Before, on this very same temple staircase, I’d practically sprinted to the ground while facing forward. This time my back was turned from the sky so my face could kiss the staircase. With each white-knuckled hand, I tightly clasped the banister as each foot cautiously sought the next step. By glomming on to each stair, I tentatively began breathing my way down. Panic threatening to immobilize me was kept at bay only by each conscious breath, mated to each mindful step. I continually reminded myself of what I had encouraged others: “Allow the life-force in the inhalation to give you the power to let go of the fear with the exhalation and move. If you stay conscious of your breath, and be present in your body, you cannot fall.” Luckily the knowledge that no one had ever fallen helped me believe it. After what seemed like a lifetime, jubilantly touching earth under my feet, a sense of accomplishment that comes only from great relief flowed over me. I felt like kissing the ground. The Pleiadians emphasized the importance of me consciously choosing to utilize my own life force breath to create change in my life, to let go of any sabotaging cycles and to create healing in my physical body. The conscious breath can also be utilized as an integrator for any new energy coming into your physical cells. The Pleiadians explained the conscious breath as activated by breathing in, and out, of the mouth. It is important that the “in breath” is deep and never controlled and the “out breath” is released without effort, not controlled. It is essential to allow the breath to be freely released out through the mouth. The mouth is fully open during the full cycle of one conscious breath, coming fully in through the mouth and then fully out of the mouth. This full conscious breath can almost feel like a deep sigh and sometimes a sound wants to naturally come out with the release of the out breath. This is the letting go energy, which is promoted by the conscious breath. The conscious breath says two things: “Yes, I am willing to let go,” and “Yes, I am willing to receive my light and connect to my light.” Every time you utilize the conscious breath, a level of what you are holding onto within your cells is being released, and this is the “letting go”action. Note that the content of what you are

letting go of within the moment is unimportant. So each time you use the conscious breath, there is the natural process of letting go within you. This is you beginning a process of you consciously choosing change now for your Self. With each conscious breath you are activating a process of transformation for your Self. You let go and open to receive that which is yours by natural birthright. You are setting in motion the activation of receivership in your life. This is a conscious action of your self-empowerment. This “letting go energy” is liberating. It allows real change to take place, because through the conscious breath the letting go energy is activated within your cells. The old density begins to be released with each breath, making room for change and transformation within the cells automatically. The density held within the cells can begin to be released, and with these openings from the release your light can flow within your cells. This process with your light entering the cell creates an energetic change within the cell itself; this makes physical healing possible. The conscious breath is not needed all of the time. You may take a conscious breath once every ten minutes, once an hour or maybe a few times a day. The rest of the time you breathe normally. You may feel inspired to do a series of conscious breaths over a space of ten minutes to bring a deeper focus on opening into the cells of a single area of your body that is in pain or in dysfunction. As you work within an individual site, you bring your awareness and the conscious breath within the space. Sometimes it is helpful to place your hand on the site into which you are bringing your focus. This supports you to deepen your awareness as you bring in the conscious breath like a soft wind within your cells. Whether you see, sense or feel the energy open does not matter. What is important is that you are choosing to actively come into your body, to interact within your cells with your life force breath. It was during the inimitable late ’60s. Perhaps bowing to pressure, our usually conservative high school sponsored M.O.R.E. Day — an acronym that stood for Multi Oral Relevant Education. This academic fest offered an array of workshops in various rooms. I felt drawn to the session on Transcendental Meditation, which sounded exotic. A shy, gangly teen, I anxiously joined a room full of physics whizzes, artists, debaters and math geeks for instruction in deep breathing and the technique of TM. I had no idea at the time that an exercise in deep breathing would continue to be useful for decades afterward. The TM instructor was a young guy with an exceptionally hypnotic voice. He explained the benefits of daily meditation. We closed our eyes and began a sacred journey. He asked us to focus on the sound of his voice. We needed to relax from head to toe. He offered calming invocations like, “Picture each toe relaxing, one by one. There. Relaxed. Becoming soft…like butter pats.” The image of toes as butter was new and surprising. He moved on to the top of the feet, ankles, knees and thighs. Traveling up the body, we relaxed “the pelvic girdle” (a tactful reference for teenagers), abdomen, trunk and heart. We sailed metaphorically down the upper arms, forearms, hands, and fingers. From there, we relaxed the neck and what he fondly termed the “heavy, heavy head.” We released tension in the eyes, nose, jaw, ears and scalp. Then came the most valuable part of the instruction; we then turned our attention to the breath. We began by filling the abdomen, trunk and chest, in that order. CURRENTLY 90 PERCENT of people are breathing at 50 percent of their lung capacity, which can increase the stress on our hearts, lead to anxiety, low energy and many diseases. Our current breathing patterns aren’t necessarily bad — or wrong. Shallow, choppy, reverse or mouth breathing — all these breathing types have served us in some way. Sometimes our breathing helps us have some sense of control in traumatic situations or helps us suppress emotions when we aren’t in a safe or appropriate place to express them. Our breathing rhythm can help us blend in with the world around us. But breathing shallowly is not ideal. Other types of breathing, such as conscious, connected breathing can help us to lead deeper, richer and healthier lives. Although unfamiliar to most people, this type of breathing has the potential to stimulate altered states, to release blockages and open ourselves to new pathways. Conscious, connected breathing expands the breath and increases energy, freeing the body from its emotional rigidity that makes breathing naturally — like when we were babies — difficult. This emotional rigidity comes from birth, death, surgery, crime, car accidents, abuse, loss of close family members or friends, illnesses and other incidents that do not get fully processed. Each one of these unprocessed events can get trapped inside our bodies and makes it a little harder to breathe. To begin conscious, connected breathing, inhale and exhale deeply, yet quickly through the nose or inhale and exhale through the mouth, so that your inhalations and exhalations are the same length of time, approximately one second each. Visualize the breath moving in a circle, up the back of the spine and down the front of the spine. This circular rhythm will help your energy circulate and increase. Focus on the inhalation and drawing in energy rather than on the exhalation. Bring your awareness fully to the breath and maintain your focus there to allow your mind to quiet. This can bring you into a deeply peaceful and blissful state. The fast, deep, circular and connected breath (no pause after the inhalation or exhalation) used in conscious breathing is designed to reveal obstacles, limitations and resistance to the full experience of life. The strong inhalations help to awaken the whole body, increasing oxygen levels in the bloodstream and circulating more energy. The inhalation also helps draw in the present moment. The exhalation offers an opportunity to release the past and any barriers in our lives, so that we can continue on our paths less encumbered. The exhalation also detoxifies the body and releases pent-up tension. Afterward, the mind is clear, calm and focused.

Conscious, connected breathing is similar to the physiology of hyperventilation, which means “over breathing.” During conscious, connected breathing we are breathing much deeper than we do in our regular lives. In fact, we might breathe as intensely as we would when we run. But in conscious, connected breathing, we are taking in a steady stream of oxygen, more than we likely have in a long while. In running and in hyperventilating, carbon dioxide leaves the body too quickly, leaving us anxious and scared. Conscious, connected breathing is surprisingly challenging for most people because the depth of the breath takes us out of our comfort zones. It brings us to a place where we’re more present and less stoic, where our mind and our ego can take a back seat. That initially brings us to a place of vulnerability that later becomes empowering and freeing. But in order to get there, we’ve got to step out of our comfort zones and that can be challenging. Our internal defenses appear in an attempt to stop the deep, circular, fast-paced rhythm of conscious, connected breathing. These show up primarily by slowing down and going to sleep. People also yawn, fidget and experience a dry throat or aches and pains, similar to the irritations we discover in our bodies during meditation. Because these avoidance tactics are difficult to stop, it is recommended to breathe with a breathing practitioner in a series of ten or more sessions before embarking on it alone. What typically happens in conscious, connected breathing is that our ego and its resistance comes to the forefront. We reach a point where the breathing gets hard and we don’t want to continue. Similar to running a marathon, we are “hitting a wall.” This resistance essentially occurs because our ego is quieting and being forced to take a back seat. With every connected breath, we connect more to universal energy and less to the ego’s belief that it is separate. Every conscious, connected breath brings you to a place where you are connected with universal energy — feeling relaxed, happy, free, fulfilled, empowered and energized. Every time you arrive there, allow yourself the opportunity to stay a little longer. Call this feeling back at every opportunity. Like physical therapy, acupuncture, yoga or massage, conscious, connected breathing is a process. One session builds on the next session. We don’t expect to take one yoga class and be set for life. Although great things can happen in one session, even greater things happen throughout the journey. And so it is with breathing. It’s unlikely that one session will solve all of our problems in life so that we’ll be living a superhero existence. It’s a continual process. Similar to an oil change for a car, conscious, connected breathing sessions are an “oil change” for the body, mind and spirit. Breathing


sessions clear out hidden, and sometimes not so hidden, obstacles and open us up to new possibilities. They can be mind-blowing, life-changing experiences or simply give us a peek into a blind spot in our lives that need some tending. BY THE TIME YOU FINISH reading this article, you’ll have taken about 1,200 breaths, unless you’re reading this while on your tread mill. My aunt, who just turned 97, has inhaled and exhaled about 815,731,200 times. Yes, over 815 million breaths. I’ve had about 504,576,000 opportunities to mind my breath. You’d think with all these opportune moments to think about my breathing my awareness would grow more quickly. I recently heard this Yogic saying: “It’s easier to calm a wild tiger than quiet our mind. Mind is like a drunk monkey who has been bitten by a scorpion.” Hmm, having been stung by a scorpion once (minus the alcohol), that about sums it up. I suppose because my aunt is nearing the end of her life — of course I could be too — we think back on life and sum things up. Then we laugh and let go of the sum because we’ve both learned we think we have the sum right and it later turns out we don’t. Letting go of holding on is what I must do

with my monkey mind. There are times when that monkey is ricocheting around, grabbing one vine of thoughts after another and swinging wildly. It’s not until I’ve pursued many non-paying-attention thoughts that I realize I’m not paying attention. Often when the monkey gets loose, I try harder to control it. I’ll get frustrated for not doing what I was telling myself to do, for being “bad” at mindfulness. I could be hard on myself; I could also not be hard on myself. If I’m frustrated with not focusing, chances are focusing will be difficult to accomplish until I ease up on myself. How do I accomplish this? I must bring my heart into my breathing practice. It is our heart that understands and holds compassion; finding self-compassion enables letting go to happen. How do we find self-compassion? Having self-compassion is a difficult thing. Many of us struggle with compassion for others, much less ourselves. Learning self-compassion includes a self-agreement that you will allow compassion. I had to learn self-compassion, for it didn’t  see SELF-COMPASSION on p. 22

meter of space inside, the last step was to lift the shoulders slightly to make room for all the inspirited air. We held that breath, slowly counting to 5 or 6. To release the breath, we would simply reverse the order and slowly release the air, using the diaphragm to push out the last remaining cubic inches. As we exhaled, we were to let the expiration become audible, making a sound like wind through the vocal cords to let us know how evenly we were releasing the breath. This, too, had a calming effect. Three of these very long, systematic breaths, and we were truly composed, focused and ready for meditation. The instructor then took us on a rare journey. He reminded us to allow our breathing to proceed more naturally, rhythmically. Our bodies were becoming light, he quietly suggested — light as cotton, light as clouds. come naturally. To do this, I had to accept my earlier resistive, turbulent nature. It’s natural to have some rebellion in us. As we become adults, we sort through what we like about ourselves and discard what we don’t. For some, our rebellion is minor, perhaps not even noticed. For those of us who have events from earlier years that cause us pain, rebellion might be self-protection. Working on conscious breathing is one place old resistance can challenge us. This is where self-compassion comes in. For those of us who’ve had any experience in life that caused unresolved trauma, it can be difficult to calm our mind. If this is true for you, practicing self-compassion is even more important. To help me learn self-compassion, I went to a playground where children and adults were present. Eventually one of the kids would start crying. Of course, the adults had various responses to their tears, but I paid attention to the adults who listened attentively and responded positively to the upset child. I listened to the tone of their voice, the compassion in it. As I didn’t get much of this growing up, it was good role modeling. As I continued practicing conscious breathing but still struggled

by a silver cord — and slowly elevated toward the sky. We took us up, up into the clouds, and we looked down on the high school and entire town of Ft. Washington, Pennsylvania. He described all the pleasant, peaceful emotions we were having as weightless beings, having left the heavy earthly weight behind. After a while, he returned us to our bodies. He reminded us to carry this relaxed and peaceful feeling into the day. On a reverse count, we opened our eyes and returned to the room and the present situation. Everyone — even the most cynical among us — was bleary-eyed but awed by the experience this skilled instructor had afforded. I could hear some indistinct proclamations of “Wow!” and “Far Out!” After that day, I would meditate daily after school. I was still a newbie, unaware of enhancements like altars, incense or special cushions. I simply sat on a linoleum floor in full lotus position, my back to the door leading from family room to the garage.

with my monkey mind, I remembered the compassionate adult and upset child. I focused my attention on the adult, the timbre of their voice, the gentle sound of assurance that everything was okay. After a bit, self-compassion didn’t feel silly anymore. Instead, it felt reassuring and healing. My ability to breathe consciously became easier. I still have monkey mind. I still get frustrated. However, it is easier to get back on track because I’m much better at giving myself some room for not always being able to do it. It is good for our emotional, physical and spiritual health to attend to our breathing. It calms us when we are upset. It can limit or take away pain. It is important for stepping into a calmer life.
