Destiny: You birthing you A Pleiadian Message

by Christine Day Beloved ones, we greet you. This is humanity’s time to move away from the old habits of the past, the old ways of being. This is the time for a sacred communion to be experienced and expressed as you reopen through the multidimensionality of your own Heart space. This is the time for you to form a new alliance with Self through your own Heart. As these resurrection energies of the Holy Vine unfold and intensify throughout your planet, there will be a profound opportunity for the opening of a completely different space of awareness for you to enter. This path will be laid before you, allowing you to reunite with your unlimited potential in every moment of your day-to-day life. By choosing to align through your Heart, you will begin to perceive and receive clarity on simple adjustments that you can open to, which will allow change to occur, bringing transformational moments into your life. These simplified moments will continually alter your experiences through these new perceptions received from your Heart connection. We liken this process of living through the Heart to turning on a light switch in a darkened room. Suddenly you can see so much more! Up to this point many of you have been stumbling around in the dark not knowing or understanding your unlimited power and your full potential in the moment. There is a strong energetic support system around each one of you to enable you to utilize your Heart as a tool, so that you can give yourself the direct experience of opening to Self. This unfolding will be set in motion through the direct result of your own conscious choice action to shift the relationship you have within your own Heart connection. Your awareness needs to be accessed through your Heart space, and through your Heart you will begin to access and channel a different viewpoint of Truth that will be revealed to you within your daily life. It’s almost as though you are looking in one direction and seeing an illusion of a vista and then, suddenly, you turn around and witness Truth, which holds an entirely different perspective or viewpoint for your life. Within the space of one moment in time there will be a series of alternate experiences that will be able to open up before you, a space where you can align energetically to a shifting energetic perception of you. This is taking place within the dynamic of your own Heart. This conscious movement by you can open you into that realignment of an energetic framework within your Heart, and it is through this framework that your conscious awareness is linked back to a place of reunion of Truth. This space of purity within your own Heart is free of the fear that is perpetuated by the illusion within this 3rd dimension on your planet. To gain access into your heart, it will be necessary that you open up your awareness to these series of transitional moments that are being activated through the Holy Vine energies. This is part of your support system that is in place for you in this transitional phase. Remember, this entire process is based on “you birthing you” through the integrity of your own Heart. There is no other dynamic involved, just you. Each one of you has a destiny meeting with your Self. You hold the keys to Self through the tool of your Heart.

YOU ARE WHO YOU HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR We, the Pleiadians, continue to speak about the appearance of these energetic forms, these Markers in the sky that are carrying the Holy Vine essence to each one of you at this juncture. This essence from the Holy Vine is beckoning, and this calling frequency activates a strong energetic quickening within you. Your Heart cells are responding to this call and your Heart is waiting for you to consciously engage. Your path of the Heart requires a commitment from you. What is really demanded here is the process of a continual “letting go.” The old way of interacting with the ego mind can no longer be sustained; instead, you are being drawn with your awareness, to choose the way of your Heart — allowing your Self to realign within this incredible expansion of capacity of light that you are naturally. No matter how things appear to be within the illusion of your life, your Heart moves   see DESTINY on p. 6 EDGE TALK RADIO coordinator CATHRYN TAYLOR 612.710.7720 ISSN 1085-0996 Copyright © 2017 All Rights Reserved. Maple Grove Holistic Expo coming to Community Center In response to public demand, Edge Life Expos & Events will launch its first summer holistic expo in the Twin Cities on Saturday, July 29, at the Maple Grove Community Center, 12951 Weaver Lake Road. The event begins at 10 a.m. and doors close at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 and parking is free. The day will feature a broad spectrum of opportunities for visitors to learn about the world of spirituality and psychic phenomena. The spotlight of the event will be the 30+ exhibitors. Intuitive readers, wellness products, healing resources, animal communicators, aura photos, jewelry, crystals and other unique gift items will be featured. “Many of our exhibitors and attendees mentioned to me that they would like a summer event with intuitive readings and healings,” said Gary Beckman, executive producer of Edge Life Expos & Events. “The big reason we put this show together was so thousands of people with like minds, compassion and feeling can come together and share their thoughts and ideas with each other.” Edge Life Expos was created in 2000 to offer the public an opportunity to come together and explore cutting edge ideas and thoughts, Beckman said. He and his team have produced annual shows in Minneapolis, Fargo, St. Cloud and Des Moines. Beckman said the transformative energies now taking place globally have inspired him even more than before to offer a place where people can come and share their

experiences and learn how to cope with the change. “The United States of America and the human race is experiencing one of the most difficult times ever, with all the lying, cheating and killing taking place and people not sharing the truth. Come to our event and we will share the truth.” Two exhibitors coming to the Maple Grove Holistic Expo have studied the changes taking place and will offer insight on what is happening: • John DeSalvo, Ph.D., a biophysicist and author of 10 books, has studied the paranormal for more than 20 years, including extensive research on the Shroud of Turin. He will share information about parallel universes and The Mandela Effect — the eerie sense that what we remember in the past is changing — and promote his keynote talk on the topic at the Minneapolis Holistic Expo in November. • Dave Schrader, host of the long-running paranormal radio show “Darkness Radio” and regular guest host of “Coast to Coast AM,” will be at the Maple Grove Expo and he will share with attendees his sense of what lies behind the transformation taking place. “Meeting in a safe place is a must,” Beckman said, “and if you have concerns about not fitting in or who to trust, come and see us. We plan to make some major announcements about new findings that have never been shared with the public.” For complete details on the event, visit and click on Maple Grove Holistic Expo. a

Rochester observing 32nd Peace Lantern Floating Ceremony For the 32nd year, the people of Rochester, Minn., will gather at twilight on Thursday, Aug. 10, to remember what happened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 and what we are capable of doing. Those in attendance will recreate the Peace Lantern Floating Ceremony, which originated in Japanese folklore to symbolize the release of ancestors’ spirits to the ocean. Participants will gather at 6:30 p.m. at the picnic shelter at Silver Lake to make lanterns, and at 7:20 p.m. letters from Hiroshima and Nagasaki will be read and speeches will be given by Rochester Mayor Ardell Brede and Dr. Ahmad Nassr. Music will be provided by DKM and Omni Drummers. In case of rain, the event will take place at Peace United Christ Church. The event is sponsored by the City of Rochester, Pax Christi, Southeastern Minnesota Alliance of Peacemakers, Rochester Franciscan Community and Peace United Christ Church. In 1946, a year after the atomic bombings, the people of Hiroshima started the lantern floating on the Ota River, where so many victims died after fleeing from the heat of the bombing. In 1985, a woman in Rochester found the story of lantern floating in Hiroshima and began to copy it at Silver Lake. It has become an annual event as a memorial to the atomic bombing. “The theme is always the same: to remember what happened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki and to insist on total disarmament of all the nuclear weapons in the world in order to establish world peace,” says Junko Maruta, coordinator of the Peace Lantern Floating Ceremony. “With nuclear weapons we are capable of destroying the world’s civilization. We are also capable of preventing that destruction. We gather to remind ourselves that the choice is ours, to be energized to work for nuclear sanity.” a 6   w w w. e d g e m a g a z i n e . n e t

you towards clarity and Truth. We remind you of the process of how to “let go” and realign to your Heart. You need to take a Conscious breath, physically hold your Heart with your hand as you bring your awareness to your Heart. This Conscious breath process involves breathing in the mouth and then breathing out through the mouth. The Conscious breath is simple and bypasses the ego mind, while allowing the building of a reconnection to your Heart. The Conscious breath is the activator of the process of letting go. It says, “Yes, I willing to let go,” and “Yes, I am willing to realign to my light, to my Heart.” With every Conscious breath, there is a letting go energy created within you, and this letting go action is a natural realigner, anchoring you back to your Heart.

Movement of expansion As the dimensional shifts rapidly increase within your Earth plane, the perception of time is breaking down on your planet. This is, in Truth, a movement of expansion that is creating an unfolding of awareness within you. You are actually accelerating through these realignments and there is an energetic repositioning opening up through each one of you within your Hearts, whether you have awareness of this or not. You are being moved and realigned dimensionally to another aspect of Self through your Heart in readiness to meet the ongoing dimensional shifts that are coming soon. This entire awakening process is creating a powerful disorientation within your consciousness — and this is an essential component of your awakening. The ego mind has been placed in a tailspin by not being able to recognize or strategize what is taking place in any given moment. The ego mind is being dislodged and cannot maintain its control within this new energetic setting that has anchored on the planet. Letting go and aligning within your own Heart is your very best option at this time to maintaining your balance. It is important for you to understand that you are in an expanded phase of not “knowing” during this stage of your transition. So, “letting go” is your only option to maintain your equilibrium. Again, we say “all is in hand” in this seeming chaos. Understanding of Self This multidimensional energetic that is unfolding on your planet, that you are being realigned to, will bring to each one of you ultimately a profound understanding of Self. These activations are going to strongly impact the planet and each one of you. You are each being called to open up consciously and say yes to your process. This conscious “yes” will support you in being able to adjust into the new energetic terrain that is going to be revealed within your multidimensional world. These activations

will begin to take place somewhere around late July, and they will continue through the full month of August. This is your time of allowing a shedding of the old ways of being, to allow yourselves to open up and utilize the essence that is coming onto the planet now. Consider your Heart as a tool, a sacred tool of reconnection for you to utilize now. Your heart is, in actuality, a receiving station, a tool to activate and then fully receive that which is your heart’s desire. In this new environment on your planet the Heart can be fully utilized. Within this new era you are to open into reconnection to the new awareness and understanding of who you are. You can move into a repatterning of Self and then navigate beyond the misperceptions and misunderstanding of the ego mind through the reuniting with your Heart. An aspect created by these misperceptions creates fear and struggle, sometimes moving you into a feeling of helplessness. You are separated from your power only through the belief connected with the ego mind. In Truth, there is an unlimited level of love for you to receive and to be nourished through your Heart connection, empowering you to access a new way of Being. The ego mind limits your ability to experience this abundance of love. Your multidimensional Heart awaits your conscious connection. Now is your time to step forward differently than ever before on this pathway that is wide open. There are countless moments of opportunities for you to engage through you Heart and reach forward to reengage with this aspect of Self that has always originated within your Heart. This aspect of you is a more complete and authentic part, which has not been utilized consciously in your lifetime. Now there is the rising, like the sun coming over the horizon, you being revealed to you. This self-revelation has an energetic momentum, a sacred timing that is designed to build over the next few months. You are being enabled by this new design of energy on your planet to reach within your multidimensional Heart and align to this expanded essence of Self.

A Dramatic Shift You will experience a dramatic shift within you in the coming months as each one of you is being cradled in a cocoon of this light frequency that is permeating through to you from the Holy Vine energies. You are a part, an aspect, of these sacred energies. As you are being held within this deeply expanded process within this cocoon, you are undergoing a deep metamorphic process. These activations and the unfolding of your birth create very challenging experiences as you live out your 3rd dimensional experience here on the planet. This entire birthing is pushing you, moving you to let go and simultaneously allowing you to align to a new way of interrelating to your Self, to your Heart. There is an   see DESTINY on p. 8

action of a stripping away, a dropping away, of your persona during this powerful process. You are going to have moments of hardly recognizing your self within this deep shifted state of consciousness. You will witness that you are working from a very different, elevated frequency platform. This new environment in which you find myself might be disconcerting, however that is the moment to take a Conscious breath, and let go. It is the ego mind that is set off balance by this changing experience. Your Heart recognizes this path. Your whole journey is about reconnection, reunion and remembering. There is nothing new here that is being revealed to your Heart. Know that the blocks that you have carried around with you within your 3rd dimensional limitations are being melted away in order for you to take this next step forward. You do not need to struggle to get this right. You naturally come Home to your Self through the Heart. This reconnection to your Heart is a simple process. You are enough just as you are in this moment of time. We are giving you a frequency sound for your Heart. Know that the cells of your Heart will recognize the unique frequency of your voice when you make the sound. This will support and accelerate your realignment to your Heart to utilize as a tool. Use this sound daily. Early morning is best. Always physically hold your Heart as you make the sound. Feed the sound directly within your Heart. Do this for five minutes minimum a day. The sound: Annn… Taest. This sound will fortify you during your day. Every time you feel off center by the third dimensional dramas, place your hand on your Heart and utilize the sound just once. Know that we continue to witness you as you continue your journey. Call us forward at any time for support. We cannot support you without that permission. Reflections on Pathways by Tim Thorpe When I was in third grade, I took wrestling as a sport, a requirement for the school I attended. I was not very good and my instructor’s post-season comments said, “Timmy tries hard, but he has much more potential.” My parents loosely explained what this meant and the next season, I exerted more effort, resulting in the instructor’s follow up comments stating “Tim did well — he found he had more inside.” In an elementary way, this experience demonstrates the core essence of who Pathways is, who we serve — and what will continue: experiential understanding. Participants who come to Pathways differ, but the undertone of what they experience has a similar theme to them. The chaos of illness, of life situations, adds layer upon layer of emotional “clutter” over an existing issue or emotional obstacle. Our providers work every day with participants to help peel back those layers, ultimately creating the opportunity for the participants to discover — or remember — their own abilities to take part in their own healing process. This mission-centric, desired goal of self-realization continues to be supported by ongoing programmatic cultivation and development, ensuring we are offering a wider breadth and depth of meaningful, impactful programs, services and education. No order or ban can suppress me nothing can take away my humanity, no hate no rage, no illegal action or racial epithet can erase me I — we all — are children of one divine Creator. Movement Meditation

Find stillness, merge with the Universe by Satya Lila “Okay, this time I’m really going to meditate. Focus… focus…I’m hungry. What should I make for breakfast? Oatmeal might be nice. I could put some raisins in there. My sister said her daughter used to sing out that she wanted oatmeal and raisins. I bet that was cute. Oh, yeah! I’m meditating! Focus…focus….” That’s how my meditations used to go. I have a very busy mind, and an acute awareness of my body. Off and on for years I tried to sit and meditate. Then I would give up and just do nothing for a while, feeling bad about myself, that I was a failure at meditation. Then I discovered bodycentered meditation practices — movement meditation, breath work, yoga and Tai Chi. All these were so much more suited to a kinesthetic being such as myself. When I move my body, my mind becomes much more quiet. I drop into a calm space where stillness is at the center of the movement. Inspirations drop into that stillness like flashes of insight. For the past 25 years, I have evolved a collection of practices that use the body to still the mind. The ones that I have found to be the most potent are breath work and micro-movement. Breath work as I do it is a process of using vigorous breathing to activate all the cells of your body. This is combined with relaxing spinal undulation to distribute the energy throughout your whole body. Your body becomes lit up, like the sunlight shimmering on the surface of a lake. Micro-movement is the   see movement on p. 12

July horoscope: Come home Mercurial Messages through the Zodiac

by Heather Roan Robbins The planets call for loyalty in July, but what do we mean by that? Do we mean loyalty to our conscience and our path, to our heart and soul, or do we mean loyalty to a person, ideal, or country, even when the relationship feels dysfunctional? We can explore how our loyalty calls us to the opposite of dysfunction, which is a sustainable ecology, a relationship where all receive as much as they give, and the dynamic is healthy enough to sustain. We can seek a relationship with our soul’s home, even if that means standing up to a bad situation in the moment. On July 4, our country’s birthday, willful Mars opposes powerful Pluto and stirs a debate about the right and healthy use of fireworks, power and leadership. Mercury enters Leo on July 5 and brings a festive note, which encourages us tell our stories around a dinner table with candles and fireflies. But it also pumps fuel into ongoing world drama. That inflammation intensifies as the Sun opposes Pluto July 9 and as Mars squares electrical, change-producing Uranus July 17. These turbulent moments are followed by a Venus-Jupiter and Mercury-Saturn trine that encourages us to be emotionally full and mentally competent July 18 through 20. Aries (Mar. 21-Apr. 19)…Rise to the challenges in this unsettled month and your confidence grows. Keep the dance safe and sane as the month opens up. Balance your work and private life, do the right thing and do it with consciousness. After July 20, life may feel more naturally affirming. Taurus (Apr. 20-May 20)…Family members and relationships with chosen siblings can complicate; some people act as if there isn’t enough to go around. Hold steady to the simple truth of love and responsibility when others waiver. Confusion mid-month as Venus

squares Neptune potentially moves into more heart-centered creativity after July 18. Gemini (May 21-June 20)… Sidestep tension early in July; deal with conflict or confrontation with compassionate honesty, or they keep coming back. Notice tension around material goods, resources for funding, and find an open and caring way through. Rather than hide behind articulation, help people find the words for their truth. Cancer (June 21-July 22)… You may be feeling particularly domestic and self-protective in early July; just don’t shut others out. Use mid-month social engagement to weave your safety net of community. Old family patterns try to leak into the present, but you can choose to work towards your ideals of healthy interactions instead. Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)…Face your fears as the month begins, and you can find bravery within you didn’t know you had. You can still ask for support. Your world may take a dramatic shift for the better, if you proactively fertilize opportunities after July 20-23 when Moon, Sun, and Mars conjunct in Leo. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)…It will be easier for you to relax after a job well done, so make this a working holiday. Be patient with moods and careful around accidents July 4-8. Then rest and refill the wells. Consider praying instead of worrying mid-month. Fresh insight into future work arrives after July 25. Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)…Don’t get caught in the crossfire; hold the space for upset people, but sidestep the brunt of their ire. If you practice sacred listening, you make a statement and create room for change. Ask good questions July 15-17. Explore creative potential from July 18 on. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)…Your inner wisdom has the opportunity to grow by leaps and bounds this year if you keep making space beyond your assumptions

and look, not for why something happened, but what is the best use to be made of the experience. Stay flexible mid-month, look for satisfying adjustments later on. Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)… Bench-press boundaries; share your generous spirit and worldly goods, but don’t do another person’s work for them, or enable them to stay in dysfunction. Just stay present and hold your ground through tough negotiations. Open yourself to fresh camaraderie at the end of the month. Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan.19)… Ingenuity furthers. A good, obsessive project helps you release stress early in the month; let others take the lead for a change and build their responsibility muscles. Mid-month your ingenious confidence and sanity furthers. Build community towards the end of the month to ease some brewing conundrum. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)…You have such a clear understanding of the big picture, but may miss important steps right here. Keep your eye on that far horizon, but pragmatically put one foot in front of the other. Sort your worries in July, look for opportunities mid-month and important meetings after July 20. Pisces (Feb. 19-Mar. 20)…Put any inner turmoil into your artwork or music, and keep it out of your relationships. Unwind and dream this first weekend. Own your concerns rather than believe the story of your anxiety. Mid-month fresh relationships sprout. Daydreams are essential for you to process and find source in late July. a Heather Roan Robbins is a heartcentered and choice-oriented astrologer, palmist and ceremonialist with 30+ years’ experience. Vision Questing for soul purpose by Mark Thurston How do you gain insight about your calling in life — your soul’s purpose? There are many selfreflection exercises and discovery tools that you can use to gain insights. But I believe that vision questing is an especially valuable approach. In many ancient cultures there were time-tested practices to stimulate such a transformational revelation about life-direction. But in our modern society those purposeful rituals have largely been lost. We need to re-invent practices of visionquesting. Over the last eight years I have been working with this practice each semester with a new group of about 28 undergraduate university students in a course entitled “Consciousness, Meaning, and Life-Purpose.” Over 15 weeks we explore the academic side of consciousness studies, how to find meaning in life, and the science of well-being and happiness. But most important to the course is experiential learning around life-purpose, culminating in a two-week personally-designed vision quest experiment. You could do this, too; and, you don’t have to be in a university course like mine. Let’s consider what my students have put into their experiments. Here are six elements to consider including in a vision quest of your own: • Formulate a question about soul-purpose. Make your inquiry very intentional. What are you hoping to discover through your vision quest?

Examples include “What talent or gift do I need to fully claim in order to see my soul-purpose?” or “What is the next step in living what I was born to do? or “Who are my people and my audience for living my soul-purpose?” • Commit adequate time. When will you do your vision quest and for how long? Although some people may have the opportunity to set aside everything and focus exclusively on this inner discovery process for a long weekend or a week, most of us have too many duties and responsibility to be solely focused on the vision quest. That’s certainly the situation for my college students, and it may very well be for you, too. But setting aside an hour a day for 10 days can work just fine — perhaps with one day in that span when you spend half the day or all day on special activities in your vision quest plan. • Create attentiveness to synchronicity. Most all of us have experienced the way in which “meaningful coincidences” can be a source of life-direction. We can use a divination tool such as the I Ching or we can just be attentive to life events. We cannot cause synchronicity because, by its very definition, it’s not the product of cause-and-effect. But we can create conditions in which we invite ourselves to be open and alert to meaningful “signs.” In a vision quest that might mean a daily practice of opening a book of spiritual wisdom to some random page and exploring how the   see VISION QUESTING on p. 14

Fun with the pineapple Food First

by Nutrition Julie Summer is a great time to have lots of fresh fruit, veggies and leafy greens on hand! One thing I hear often from people is how hard it is to keep fresh produce in the house and use it before it spoils. We’ve all had that moment where we open the crisper drawer in the refrigerator, only to find a less than desirable fruit or vegetable that has to be tossed instead of enjoyed. The solution isn’t to buy less produce. Instead the solution is to find more ways to use that produce when it comes into your house. Here are three fun ways to use a fresh lovely pineapple!

1 small red onion, thinly sliced 1/2 pineapple, peeled, cored and cut into 1/2-inch cubes 1 small sweet red pepper, cored, seeded and finely chopped 2 T minced fresh cilantro 1 T lime juice 1/2 tsp honey 1/4 tsp salt Put all ingredients in a bowl together, cover and refrigerate for one hour to let the flavors blend. This is fresh and wonderful on top of fish or chicken! My family loves this on top of swordfish, tuna steaks, tilapia and chicken.

2 handfuls of spinach, kale or chard 1-1/2 cups fresh pineapple (about 1/4 of a pineapple) 1 banana 1/2 cup coconut milk 1 tsp coconut oil Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Additional water can be added to reach desired consistency. A vacation treat without ever leaving your kitchen!

WHIPPED PINEAPPLE POPS 1 whole pineapple Juice of 1 lime 1-1/2 cups coconut milk

Blend together and pour into popsicle molds. Freeze and enjoy! I have done this with strawberries and almond milk, as well, and they are fabulous! a Nutrition Julie is a Certified Holistic Health Coach and Raw Food Nutrition Educator who is passionate about nutrition, health and wellness. teachings on that page prove to be relevant. Or, it can mean walks in nature during which you are alert to signs or events that remind you of principles and truths that need to be prominent in your life now. • Incubate a dream. Dreams happen every night to all of us, but usually we don’t prepare ourselves before going to bed. The dreaming mind is connected to that soulful level from which a calling and life purpose arises. Dedicating one or more nights during your vision quest to dream guidance can be a powerful element of your personal exploration. Fall asleep with the central question for your vision quest clearly in your mind. And make sure you have put on your bed stand what you’ll need to record your dream just after awakening. • Meditative exercises. Some kind of contemplative practice is vital to a vision quest. If you already have a meditation practice, then here’s a time to deepen your commitment. Or if you are new to meditation, get started with even five or ten minutes daily during your vision quest. • Creative expression. Intuitive insight can often be awakened in the midst of creative endeavors. As part of your vision quest plan, you might include sketching a picture of your dream, using a musical instrument daily to create some music (not just listen to it), or drawing a mandala several times during the span of your vision quest. By completing a personal vision quest, just like my university students do, I think you are sure to get greater clarity about your life purpose. Just making “dedicated space” in your busy life for something like this can be transformational. And there’s also a chance to you will gain a selfinsight that will propel you into the next phase of your journey in living your soul-purpose. a Mark Thurston, Ph.D., is a psychologist, author, and director of educational programs at George Mason University’s Center for the Advancement of Well-Being. Healing is inside out by Steven Hiebert When you hear the word healing, what do you think of? Do you think of your body’s ability to mend a cut or broken bone? Do you imagine someone doing Reiki or giving a massage? Maybe you think of a doctor performing a surgery or giving medicine to the sick. Well, for me, healing is connecting with your true Self. In my work as a healer and chiropractor, I have witnessed many instances of incredible healing; healing that was unexpected and sometimes unexplainable. It has happened enough that I have come to expect the unexpected. Healing is not miraculous; it’s just the way things work. You were born with the power to heal. It’s a gift from the Creator; a part of who you are. Because of this, you can heal. Access the power of your own soul or true Self, and you can overcome anything. During the many years I have been in practice, I have used just about every therapy you can think of — short of drugs and surgery. I have given my patients diets and nutritional supplements of all kinds. I’ve used flower essences, essential oils, and homeopathy. I have adjusted just about every bone in the human body. I’ve done work on ligaments, tendons, fasciae and muscle. I’ve pushed on trigger points and acupuncture points. Detoxification, fasting, juicing — you name it and I’ve done it. But something has gradually become so clear it’s undeniable. It’s not what I do. It’s who you are on the inside that matters most. Healing is inside out, not outside in. I help. You heal. Spirituality is the best medicine there is. Unfortunately, it is grossly underutilized and all too often completely neglected. Many care providers are focused more on what they can do to you than how they can help you be your own healer. And, the truth is, no one can make you heal. You must do it for yourself. You are a spiritual being. Place your focus there. When you allow the strength and innate wisdom of your own soul to lead the way, health and well-being is a natural outcome. You might be thinking: “How do I do this?” Well, I’ll tell you a little secret. Spirituality isn’t an intellectual pursuit. Thinking about it won’t make it happen. To connect with your soul’s power to heal, you must move beyond thinking about it so you can live it. It’s a little bit like riding a bicycle. Remember when you were a kid and wanted to ride a bike? I’m sure you thought about it a lot. But when you got on that bike, you fell right off. That’s what happened to me. I finally started riding a bike when I thought my dad was holding me up. I didn’t know he let go. I relaxed, stopped thinking so hard, and just let it happen. Like magic, I could ride. Healing is the same. Here are three tips to help you move out of

your head and into your heart and soul where your power to heal comes from: • Breathe deeply. Sit comfortably and close your eyes. Breathe deeply, slowly and rhythmically. Focus on your breathing, as if it is the only thing in the world that matters. Notice how peaceful you become. That peace comes from your true Self. • Meditate on a candle. Light a candle and do the deep breathing exercise. This time, keep your eyes open and stare at the candle light. That light is the most amazing thing you’ve ever seen. Pretend you are the light. Notice how calm and content you become. That is the real you. • Visualize. Sit and breathe deeply until you’re calm and relaxed. When you’re ready, imagine you are a beautiful spiritual being of Divine light. Now, imagine how your body will look and feel when it is a physical representation of your beautiful spirit. You are bringing the power of your own soul to life inside your body. You live in a physical, human body, but that body isn’t who or what you are. You’re far more than the body you live in. You are the inside. You are the inner spiritual entity that was created by the Divine. You are powerful. What you think of as your spirit is who you are. That soul of yours is your true Self. It is the essence of life and the joy of unconditional love. It is the life-force that animates your body and makes it alive. When you allow your true Self to fill your body with its life-giving energy, your body responds with health and vitality. This is why I say: “Be Your Self and Be Well!” Creating health and well-being isn’t complicated. It’s easy. I’ll give you a simple formula for creating optimal health. Focus most of your time and energy on the fulfillment of your soul. Pray. Meditate. Practice deep breathing and inner listening. Make it a daily practice. Then, love and nourish your body. Eat only the best food. No junk. Exercise regularly and make it fun. Laugh often, especially with those you love. Breathe deeply and drink water throughout the day. Sleep so that you feel rested and alert when you wake up. You can heal because you are a beautiful spiritual being created in the image of the Divine. Healing is connecting with your true Self. a Steven Hiebert, author of the new book Be Your Self and Be Well: Connecting with Your Soul’s Power to Heal (Wise Ink), is a gifted healer, doctor of chiropractic, teacher, and author who lives and works in St. Paul, Minnesota. Heart to Heart

The Edge Interview with Jeremiah & Amanda Rangel of IntraAwareness by Tim Miejan Editor’s note: The interview was edited for print. Read the complete conversation at When two people have the essential training and inspired passion, anything is possible. Case in point is a married couple living in Minneapolis — Jeremiah and Amanda Rangel. Jeremiah, a St. Paul native, spent years fine-tuning his skills as a personal trainer, nutrition coach and practitioner and trainer of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and hypnosis. His wife, Amanda, who grew up in the small towns of Paynesville and Roscoe, Minn., just west of St. Cloud, graduated from the University of St. Thomas in commercial real estate, finance and economics, and became a certified personal trainer and relationship coach and spiritual guide. Together, they formed IntraAwareness “to create a world where every human being feels completely connected from within.” The couple recently spoke with The Edge to share more insight on IntraAwareness and what inspired them to help others reach their full potential in all areas of their lives. What did you want to be when you young? Amanda: What I wanted to be when I was young was an oceanographer. I love underwater and exploration and growth and finding things and discovering things that had not yet been discovered. So, that’s the direction I really thought my life was going to go. Jeremiah: As early as I can remember, we used to go in elementary school to a planetarium, where you go and sit back and they show you all the constellations. I just remember when I visited there having mystical experiences regularly, and it connected me on a level with these planets where I came from before I came to Earth in this body. So I wanted to be an astronomer, and then I wanted to go into fire fighting. I always knew I wanted to help people, but I ultimately ended up where I’m at today. What choices did each of you make for your lives upon leaving high school? Amanda: I have always had a core about me that is about expansion, so I looked up an uncle of mine who worked at a really big company here in Minneapolis as an accountant in commercial real estate development. I grew up pretty sheltered, so I aspired to be like him. I went to a twoyear tech college in St. Cloud and studied 1 6   w w w. e d g e m a g a z i n e . n e t

accounting. I didn’t know where I was going, I just knew I was going somewhere. I got a job at his company and became really interested in commercial real estate, finance and economics. I ended up going to St. Thomas and getting a degree in commercial real estate studies. I took that next step of going into the corporate world for security and all of the reasons that people go into that kind of a work environment. Jeremiah: During high school I got partnered up with a gentleman in St. Paul by the name of Roger Erickson, who was an athletic trainer for several high-level athletic teams from high school all the way to the elitelevel professional athletes. For five years or six years I studied and trained under him, and then I kept betting on myself and investing in myself. I kept wanting — very much like Amanda says — more expansion. So, I was 24 years old and made another choice to go to a top international coaching school to learn neurolinguistics psychology and sonic hypnotherapy and study quantum physics. Then a few years later I found myself in India in 2006 going to a place where pretty much the Who’s Who of spirituality has gone and received training with the Dalai Lama, including Eckhart Tolle, Deepak Chopra, Tony Robbins, Oprah Winfrey. So here I am surrounded with gurus and swamis, and I’m just this 26-year-old guy who just wants to grow, and I kept continuing to grow ever since. What or who inspired you to move toward assisting the lives of others for a career? Amanda: Since I was really young, about 4 or 5, I was more consciously aware. I was always having mystical experiences, communicating with this source that was not physical. I always had a lot of angels around me and a lot of guidance

in that way. At first it was really natural and normal, but then when I tried sharing my experiences with my parents, family members or friends, I got weird looks. I learned really quickly that that was not an acceptable thing that people were willing to talk about — so I learned to shut that down. I learned to mute some things that were really natural within myself in an urge to get along with other people. I just wanted to fit in. I wanted to have friends. I just didn’t want to be the weird one. These things were still continuing to happen, throughout college, and while working in the corporate world, but it got to a point when a timer went off. That’s what I feel it was for my energetic and spiritual self, and my purpose in life. The lessons that I learned about muting and quieting my natural abilities and my natural state were no longer acceptable. So when that happened, things in my life started shifting dramatically. I went through a lot of the things that people go through to break down and come to full surrender, including a divorce. During the whole time I was praying and communing with my angels and my guides to see what the real lesson was for me. I feel that I really got to the core of what my purpose was and what these lessons were for me and how, before I even came here, I asked for these lessons, and I was determined to be able to break through them and grow from that. That’s what ended up happening for me to get to the place of moving away from the corporate world to being in a place where I now am a multi-practitioner, a life coach and certified hypnotherapist. The spiritual and natural tools that I have had my whole life have just fully flourished, so I am now in a place where I can help guide others to do what they are really meant to do, in whatever version that is for them. That’s what I am really passionate about. I feel really fortunate that my partner and I can both focus on this on a daily basis to create an amazing community of people from around the country coming to Minneapolis for this training and coaching that we are doing. Minneapolis is a lighthouse that is going off now, and people from around the country are coming here to be a part of it, and it is really cool. Jeremiah: What I am about to share might be unbelievable to some, and fully resonate with others, and all I am sharing is my authentic truth. Growing up in St. Paul, I remember when I was 5 years old. I was in

my front yard by myself and the best way to explain it is that this golden being appeared. It was kind of a human form, but there were not any features, and it was completely balanced between the masculine and feminine energy. It felt like home. It felt like something that really resonated with me — and I didn’t question it. I didn’t have this big strong ego at the time to be able to reject information. So I just was talking with it. It kind of felt like the sun, but not hot, and right in front of me it started to share with me that humanity was going through a huge shift of consciousness in the years to come, very quickly, mainly around December 21, 2012, and I was going to be a big part of this shift of consciousness, whatever that may mean. And I said, “Okay.” At the time, that just made sense, and this being told me it was going to help me on my journey in a very big way. And I said, “Okay. Sure.” I mean, I was just a little boy and it felt good, no problem. The next thing I knew was it jumped inside of me and immediately I started to download and activate spiritual gifts. I received my map of the world and they told me when I was 33 years old that I would have a huge shift of consciousness, a big awakening that would happen, which it did. It told me I would marry somebody like myself who was also half Mexican. My dad is full Mexican, and Amanda’s mom is full Mexican, and we are both Sagittarius. We were literally born a week apart, and I never met a person more like me, but who is very different in the same way. Like Amanda, I shared with my parents about these mystical experiences. I started talking about the stars and having channeled that information and they did not shut it down. They didn’t know what to do with it. They looked at me kind of big-eyed, but they said, “Jeremiah, this is pretty amazing stuff. We don’t know what to do with it.” These gifts really were not harnessed until I had a physical mentor, and then I went to my psychological mentors and then I went to India to learn advanced spiritual technology. Long story short, I went to India and finally found this teacher who was the one that showed up when I was 5 years old, and who has been with me until this time. It was very extremely powerful. It blew me away. I’m like, “All right! I’m done!” There is no need for belief. It’s my experience. I’m like, “I’m good!” One of my spiritual gifts is to discover, develop and extract and help people discover what their spiritual gifts are, and help people with clairvoyance, clairaudience and all different kinds of things. This golden light inside of me basically has taken over. Things work just a little bit differently for me than other people. Instead of having to talk to guides and angels with a time lag

to get the information, for me it was instantaneous since the age of 5, ingrained inside of me the whole time. What led to the creation of IntraAwareness? Jeremiah: The first part of it started when I was 5 years old when that golden light came inside of me and started to download and activate. It showed me and told me directly that I was here to create these Earth schools for light beings or human beings to help them learn how these things called their bodies — what we call Earth suits — work. The thing called the supercomputer is called the mind. And the portal to higher consciousness is called the heart center, then the universe of Self. I was unconsciously searching for it my whole life and then I had my first physical mentor for five years. I wanted him to have all the answers, but he could only teach me what he knew, and then I went to the psychological teachers and I wanted them to have all the answers, but they only taught me what they learned, and then spiritual teachers did the same. Finally in 2011, I received this huge insight. The same voice inside, this golden light, told me, “Jeremiah, stop. You are traveling the world getting all this training. That’s awesome. That’s great, but stop searching for the school. It does not exist yet. You are what you have been looking for, so start building it.” So, in 2011 we started this fully integrated system, a holistic lifestyle training system for leaders, for light beings. We call them spiritual butterflies. It’s for people who want to discover what they’re here to do — not through the mind, not intellectually, but experientially. Once you ultimately get in touch with what you are here to do, your mission, your purpose, your vision, that is so important because that is the only thing that can actually help a person break through all the obstacles, all the blocks, all the fears, all the invisible walls, that it takes to get to the level that it needs to be to do what you are here to do. We also help them develop tools and resources physically, psychologically, spiritually and financially to be able to fully support their vision. IntraAwareness is not a religion or even a different spirituality thing or a different school system where you come to us and then you start to look like us, talk like us, dress like us, do like us. It’s quite fundamentally the opposite of that. We offer a study in total life mastery, and once you learn it, you can apply it yourself. You can make it your own. You can repackage it any way you want. You must do that for it to be successful for you, and you must communicate it with other people the way that works best for you. We empower leadership and we empower people to bring their life — not conceptually,

not psychologically, but actually in reality and experientially —to do what they’re here to do. That’s what we’re here to do. Amanda: The main point that I’m feeling called to share is that it is experiential. A lot of things tend to be concept-based, like memorizations of facts and other people’s experiences. What we do is completely different. It is really, truly experiential. And what we have found is that one person’s experience will ripple out when they share their experience with their friends and family to hundreds of people in a different ways. The experience of healing, the experience of having your own mystical connection to your higher purpose, or to Christ Consciousness, is only experiential and it’s hard to put into words. We’ve been finding, and what all of our students and clients have been finding, is that it is the real thing. It’s what they have been looking for for years, if not decades. It’s very cool. Yes! What do you see as the most common limitations that keep us from realizing happiness and achieving our soul’s purpose? Jeremiah: Fear. Hurt. People experience programs that they inherited from their parents, from religion, from ancestral, past lives. To be really honest and to really sum it up for you, it’s the resistance of fear. We teach people how to fully receive the ability to accept fear. If you are not afraid of fear, you are immune. The biggest obstacle people have is themselves — nothing outside, no enemies, no boogeyman, none of all of that stuff. It is actually the fear and the inability to know how to really experience it, to heal it, to connect to it, to dissolve it, to transmute it — and all of this cannot happen in our experience within the mind. We need the mind for certain things, but the mind fundamentally cannot experience anything. The mind is a supercomputer. We teach and share with a lot of our students that there are no emotions in your head, and there are no thoughts in your heart. They’re two different parts of you. You are not your mind, yet your mind is a part of you. You’re not the universe, but the universe is part of you. You are not exclusively that. It depends on what level of consciousness you are looking at it from. Of course, on a higher level you are the Universe and everything in it. What we have found are the negative programs that people have inherited and why. When we say negative, we don’t actually think negative is bad and positive is good. We feel that positive is moving forward and negative is moving backwards. What keeps people from moving forward is always rooted in fear and the ability to experience it, to resolve it, and heal it, and connect it.   see HEART to heart on p. 18

HEART to heart

continued from p. 17

So the key is to accept it and move through it? Jeremiah: Yes and no. In a bigger picture, yes, but what we teach is fundamentally that human beings do not have the ability to accept anything. It has to be given to them by their own higher self or God or the Universe. What I found to be true for myself and 100 percent of the people that I work with is that there are certain things in the world you can cultivate — some sweet glutes, some sweet biceps, get to the gym, do some nutrition, do these workouts — and all of those things are great, but in the spiritual realm, in the emotional realm, what we show people is, “Let’s take a look inside at self-acceptance. Do you have this?” Some people’s strategy, if they don’t know how to do something, is to identify with being a failure or a loser or negative thoughts. We teach people that’s fine. We actually have no judgment with that. But do you realize that out of infinite possibilities, that is only one way to look at it. Here’s another way, which is to personally and permanently connect with your higher consciousness, your higher self, your future self that’s already received this lesson, already connected, and bring it inside of your heart to give you direct experience and ask for it to give it to you. Everything — from our logo, our message, what we do, what we say — points the person back to their own heart, not the physical heart, not what the mind thinks is the heart, but the actual heart center. That’s why it’s called IntraAwareness, with an awareness inside of awareness. The awareness is the key, but the mind cannot be aware of anything because it is a computer. Awareness is what people really are — it’s consciousness itself. Amanda: If you go into your heart space, into that connection, fear can be connected in a way where, again, it goes back to being experiential. It is not accepting fear and holding it close or pushing it away. Fear

1 8   w w w. e d g e m a g a z i n e . n e t

just is an experience. You don’t need to do anything to it. The end of the journey is not about eliminating fear for good. When fear arises, it arises as something that is connected and you can see it and you can feel it and you can just walk through it with your heart, and you really do become like a superhero at that point. A lot of these movies that are coming out about superheros are more than just the story to enjoy for an hour and a half while you are at the movies. They are about something that can be connected within each person. It’s totally possible, and we are doing it on a daily basis, helping people, guiding people to do it within themselves. These superhero movies are not just movies. They are real, and it’s actually happening every day right here in Minneapolis and around the world. I’m not pushing it away, I’m not resisting it, it’s just there and I just can walk through it. I can be in my bubble and out of my bubble. It doesn’t matter because it’s connected, and when it’s connected it has no effect on me whatsoever. Jeremiah: What we teach and what we find is if fear comes up for a person, it’s a part of themselves that has not yet been connected. So, we don’t resist it. It’s actually a communication. It’s not much different than a check engine light on the car. It’s if a person feels fear, it’s a part of you that has not yet been connected, so let’s connect that which needs to be connected. It’s about true acceptance. When I say that human beings don’t have the ability to accept things, that they can only have it given to them or transferred to them or shown to them, what I mean by that is if there is true acceptance of fear or judgment or (fill in the blank), if there is true acceptance there, there is no part of you that has any preference to it being there or not. If fear is there, you could bathe in it, you could moisturize with it, you could eat it, you could let it do whatever it does. There is literally no preference. And at a certain level

of consciousness, this fear becomes afraid of you. If you are not afraid of it or if you actually welcome it, if you want to serve fear — and I’m talking about emotional fear internally — then that part of you becomes connected through that acceptance and it just totally transforms life. Is there a daily practice you could recommend to our readers to keep them moving forward and progressing in their body/mind/Spirit connection? Amanda: The first thing that I really feel called to share is a really beautiful practice that helps body/mind and connecting to Higher Consciousness called peripheral awareness. Most of the time people walk around and they’re really focused on exactly what’s right in front of them, and that tends to allow the mind to be very active. When the mind is active, when there are a lot of thoughts, there is usually not a lot of feelings or connection in the heart center. My simple suggestion would be to go into peripheral vision first. Notice the things that you are focusing on right in front of you with your eyes, and then without moving your focus in that one spot, relax your eyes and notice what’s to the side of your main focus. You could move your arms on the side of your body and notice in your peripheral vision that movement happening, or expand your vision out and notice the walls on the side of the room, if you are in a room. If you are in nature, see the scene right in front of you, but then see peripherally what is on the side of the road without actually moving your eyes. When you’re doing this, of course, breath is necessary because that is going to give the fuel for that connection to your unconscious mind and your Higher Consciousness. So, breathe along with the peripheral vision expanding, and then notice the different sounds around you. That completes the peripheral awareness exercise, in a very short explanation. When you are in peripheral awareness, you have access to your unconscious mind,

which has all of your memories stored into it. It also has a lot of the answers that the conscious mind is trying to look for. What message do you want to leave with our readers? Jeremiah: The biggest thing we have for everybody is that all physical, psychological, spiritual, financial suffering is optional, meaning the spiritual, physical, psychological, emotional and financial technology is here. We have put it together and we’re continuously upgrading it, learning better, easier and more effectively to teach and transfer this information to anybody to focus on finding the root cause of why people are suffering or struggling in any way, shape or form. We have found that all physical suffering, all chronic pain, is actually rooted in psychological suffering. There is something wrong WITHIN the mind — and when we say “wrong” we’re meaning negative programs, limiting beliefs, negative self-identity, things like that. The grass is always greener. If I had a million dollars, I’d be happy. You get a million dollars. If I had five million dollars I’d be happy. It’s about continuously comparing, judging, not being satisfied with what’s happening, not being content. And then all of that suffering is rooted in spiritual or existential suffering, which is, at my core, that I feel completely disconnected. I feel lonely, I feel separate, and I’m trying to do all these infinite things to run away from myself.

So, we have the solution. We have an answer. But it’s not us giving it, it’s us guiding and coaching. It’s not like we have it in a bottle. It’s not like we have it in a book. It’s experiential. We can technically lead a person step-by-step within themselves, but I feel fundamentally that healing is a team sport and we can’t do it by ourselves. I would not be here if it was not for all my teachers, all of my obstacles, everything. I’m the total sum, and so are you, of everything that you have been doing up to this point. If you want different results, then you’re going to need to do something differently and bring this information that we’re sharing with you in your heart. If it resonates with you, reach out for us because the time is now to grow and elevate. When we partner with people, when we coach, when we guide, when we teach, when we talk to people, we give 100 percent of our total being and resources at your disposal. So, that’s who we are, that’s what we’re here to do. We’ve made it our life’s purpose, our life’s work. So, bring that information into your heart and see if it’s true for you. We’re on your team. a For more information on IntraAwareness, visit, email info@intraAwareness. com or call 612.930.2662. Tim Miejan is editor & co-publisher of The Edge magazine. featuring this month: creating community

Heart of community Spirit Leaves

by Janet Michele Red Feather Community is invariably defined as a feeling of fellowship or connectedness with like-minded people. Where is this mythical place, though, for people who are shy, empathic, hermitic, and individualistic at heart? Those who are shy, sensitive, and introverted usually prefer to linger in the chambers of their own self-created sanctuaries, rather than venture out into the communal unknown. The variegated energies of the group scene can wreak havoc on empathic souls. This month’s prompt invited me to rethink the idea of community and its function in the current energetic shift. Not too long ago, I came across a reference to “community” in an older work of Annie Lamott’s. I found a hard copy of Plan B, Lamott’s painful and witty reflections on her unfolding spirituality. Lamott admits dragging her reluctant son to church weekly, in order to expose him to “the power of community.” I love Annie’s writing, but the group concept troubled me. For an empath, community does not hold the same draw. Until recently, empaths have felt marginalized by the culture. I myself grew up constantly being judged as “too” something — by relatives as well as peers. I was deemed “too sensitive,” “too serious,” “too intense,” or “too philosophic.” “What’s with the too?” I’d think to myself, “I’m exactly as I need to be in order to make art, theatre, music or poetry!” Where community entails merger with a collective energy, my journey has always been inward wherein all truths lie. Of the two roads diverging in a narrow wood, I chose the one that is the antithesis of organized religion. My way is Ghost, Wanagi, which means seeing the heart or spirit of a person. In this way of life, there

2 0   w w w. e d g e m a g a z i n e . n e t

is no guidebook or set of rules, and that can be daunting for most. The Holy men I learned from offered tools and shed some light, but after that, they left me on my own. Spiritual growth was to be an individual matter. I developed a relationship with the Spirits, and they became my teachers, not the human beings. My Guides and Spirit Helpers communicate with me through dreams, signs, symbols and visions. I can understand how community is there to offer refuge, a safety zone for developing aspirants. Tibetan Monks recite this phrase when they have not completely unveiled the truth: “I take refuge in the three jewels: the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha, until I attain enlightenment.” These terms refer to the Enlightened Being Siddhartha Gautama (who became Buddha); the Spiritual Doctrines and their attendant lessons (Dharma); and the Spiritual Community (Sangha), respectively. The notion of refuge reminds me of Cedric’s compassionate view toward beginning seekers. Cedric taught that when a person first starts out on the spiritual path,

he is like a little sapling in need of protection. After that, he is like a little bird that needs to be pushed out of the nest. In each of these illustrations, refuge, or community, is intended to provide only a temporary port during life’s raging storms. One must venture out to sea alone if he is make any gains in the spiritual. Traditional Native people accomplish much as a nation, yet they don’t usually require conformity to a “community.” Rather than striving to be “like-minded,” each person receives a spirit name as a reminder of his uniqueness. Mandans use the word tamisik to describe the times of coming together. Tamisik is a gathering of the people in unity and celebration, often following a ceremony. The word “Tamisik” actually means “unity” or “togetherness.” The focus is more upon a state of being or intention than on sharing similar traits. At powwows in California, I met many wise elders. Two Iroquois elders in particular would admonish me to “look within,” stating that the answers I sought were “already inside.” It sounded too simple. Later, in North Dakota, I met a Mandan Turtle Priest, Cedric Red Feather, and he lent those words the ring of truth when he said, “The journey is individual. Trust your own intuitive heart.” I’m thinking now that perhaps the longed-for community, the ultimate place of refuge and connection, actually exists within — inside the human heart. a Janet Michele Red Feather, J.D., M.A., is a ceremonial singer who has learned over 60 traditional songs in Mandan and Lakota and sings in nine different languages. Janet was a fulltime defense litigator in California for nearly eight years. Her life changed significantly after she traveled to North Dakota in 1993 to fast and pray for a way of life. A regular columnist for The Edge, she has also appeared in Psychic Guidepost, FATE Magazine and Species Link. Her book, Song of the Wind (2014, Galde Press), dealt with her experiences as an empath, and her journey through Mandan spiritual culture. She is currently a full-time, tenured English faculty member at Normandale Community College, having taught Composition and Literature for a span of 20 years. Copyright © 2017. All Rights Reserved.

Comfort zone or house arrest? by Lisa Severson Every one of us has our personal comfort zone. We all have behaviors, situations or things that we feel completely at ease with. It’s a bit like a house. In that “house” we have all of our favorite things, in our favorite colors. We have our favorite foods and our favorite people and situations that make us feel the safest. So there we sit, surrounded by all the things we feel totally okay with. Now, some of those things in our comfort zone may not be positive. We all have the ability to get comfortable with negative experiences and things, as well. We convince ourselves that we can’t change the circumstance, or we don’t deserve nice things or that the people in our lives all have to stay there even if they aren’t supportive or, worse yet, abusive. We’ve all wondered how some people can stay in situations that we ourselves would be terribly uncomfortable with, such as bad jobs, horrible living situations or abusive relationships. It can be a “comfort zone” issue. Once we have our Comfort Zone House, even if it’s bad, it’s pretty scary to leave it and jump into the great unknown. I mean, hey, there’s some good stuff in there too, right? All the things we use to cope with the bad stuff are in that house, too. Sooner or later, though, we might start to think we want something new. It could be as small as wanting to try a new kind of food or as big as wanting to find a different job or possibly pick up and move to a different state. However, to go get that different food, different job or completely different life, you’re going to have to step outside of that Comfort Zone House, because what you want isn’t in there or you would already have it. That’s when we find out just how agoraphobic we’ve become about stepping outside of our comfort zones. Some people would rather stay only in the confines of their comfort zone than risk even the smallest change. Their fear of what might happen if they put a toe over that threshold keeps them prisoner, sometimes for their whole lives. There are

millions of people who simply won’t try something new or a new way of being in their world even if it would get them something they really want. For instance, a lot of people want to have a closer relationship with their significant others, their children or family members, but to do that they know they have to say they are sorry, admit they made a mistake or open up and be vulnerable in some way. They may even be completely aware of what it would take and they just can’t do it. They cannot bring themselves to change their behavior, because it’s too uncomfortable. To them it’s more appealing to live in the comfort zone of old ways of being than to risk that uncomfortable feeling of trying something new. But guess what? All the things you feel are missing in your life, all the things you don’t feel you currently have and really want, are outside of that comfortable little house you’re hiding in. Look around at your life. Take stock of what you have and what you still want to achieve, acquire or become. If you can get the things you want and stay in your comfort zone, great, do that. But if you don’t find them hiding in a closet somewhere, you’re going to have to open the door, step outside the comfort of your selfmade house and go for a little walk. Baby steps are okay; you don’t have to go jogging around the block right away. Maybe just a trip around the yard or out to the mail box, you know, something small. Make a call, open up a little more to someone you care about, try a new food, research how to make a big move to another city, whatever. Just do something small every day to get you to your goal. Step out of that house and maybe, someday, you will find that the little feeling of discomfort you get when trying new things can be included in your comfort zone. I know, weird, right? a Lisa Severson is a Holistic Life Coach, Energy Healer and Interfaith Minister who specializes in addressing all aspects of a person’s life to bring about balance, joy and healing. featuring this month: creating community

This extroverted introvert finds comfort in the company of Mother Earth & angels by Candia Lea Cole When I participated in the Meyer’s Briggs personality test many years ago, it indicated that I was an “extroverted-introvert.” That means I’m socially adept, as well as quiet and reclusive. When I attend a gathering or a party, I am able and willing to easily engage, talk, laugh, sing and dance like the rest of the extroverts. But, like most introverts, I don’t especially favor small talk. I’d rather seek out a quiet nook of the room and sit down with the one person that I feel I can have a deep and meaningful conversation with. Even that kind of engagement can sometimes demand more of my energy than what I’m comfortable putting out. It’s not unnatural for me to want to leave a social event early, so I can recharge my batteries and enter back into a place I’m more comfortable being in — a place of solitude. In a place of solitude, I can do what I do best. I can create. I can use my time and energy to think, dream, imagine and write. For as long as I can remember, I have loved to write. Whether it was Christmas letters, poems, tributes, business brochures, articles or what have you, I was always in my comfort zone when putting pen to paper. The first books I ever wrote and published included three whole foods cookbooks, each of which featured eco-friendly recipes, as well as inspiration for living in harmony and balance with nature. After becoming a cookbook author, my publisher suggested that I seek opportunities to share my wisdom about food, nutrition, health and ecological disease prevention as a freelance health writer. I did, and that offered me (the “introvert part” of me) a way to connect with a national audience, even though I was

working behind the scenes to do it. Since the publication of my first books and articles, I’ve worked on many other writing and publishing projects. One of my biggest creative writing projects (an Eco-Mentor Leadership Training curriculum for young adults), which involved the creation of eight companion books, led me to completely abandon the “extrovert part” of me for many years. It wasn’t intentional on my part, but as I discovered, I needed to dive deep into the heart’s core of my being to get in touch with the inspiration that wanted (and needed) to be birthed within me. That birthing process was both exhilarating and exhausting. It required me to live in a world without many distractions and become attuned to my innermost thoughts. It required me to draw on my own self-healing experiences to create the messages featured on the pages of my

books, and honor the guidance given to me (for shaping those messages) by the voice of Mother Earth herself. Even though I was a “shut-in” during my process of “writer’s immersion,” I never felt alone. In addition to being connected to (and guided by) the voice of nature, I was also connected in Spirit to a community of angels living “on the other side.” Like Mother Earth, these angels were my constant companions for many years. They loved me, calmed my fears and doubts, smiled on my efforts, downloaded amazing ideas into my thinking brain, and gave me meticulous instructions for how to put my books and curriculum together as a whole. As a result of their guidance, I wrote a memoir, an Eco-Mentor Guidebook, and six workbook journals, all of which symbolize the wisdom that I’ve gained on my own life-long journey to understand, manage and heal the symptoms of environmental illness. Now, with this timely opportunity to share my “introvert-extrovert” experience with The Edge community, I hope others will join me in “healing themselves, to heal Mother Earth!” Both introverts and extroverts are needed to heal ourselves and the planet! a Candia Lea Cole is the founder of Eco-Learning Legacies in St. Paul, MN.
