One love, one world from the editor

by Tim Miejan We’ve seen the marches in solidarity with victims of terrorism, from chants of Je suis, Charlie and the ubiquitous red, white and blue Eiffel tower icons to the massive gathering in London (right) and the rainbow lighting on government buildings as far away as Perth, Western Australia, in honor of the fallen in Orlando. It gives me chills to see such a global reaction to local tragedy. While it is so incredibly sad that the senseless slaughter of innocents is sparking a unity that’s never been seen before, nonetheless it is a clear demonstration of the growing connection between humans everywhere. Of course, that is the result of us being able to instantaneously communicate with one another, thanks to technological advancements like real-time social media. But our ability to chat from Minneapolis to Sydney, from Berlin to Rio, from Tokyo to Reykjavik, in the present moment is just a tool. What we do with it is what matters. And what is truly revolutionary is the love that is spreading like waves around the planet in the wake of these tragedies. We now have the ability to directly demonstrate our support, and our feelings, with fellow humans living anywhere in their time of need. And conversely, each of us can receive the same love and

support in return. Today I find myself wondering if these terror attacks offer a silver lining, only in the sense that they inspire humanity to practice the newly evolved skill of sending love en masse to fellow citizens of the world. Without such motivation, how would we know that so many of us could broadcast such inspiration to a specific part of the world with hardly any advance notice? Why does this matter? It matters because it’s too easy to be shaken personally by daily reports of insensitivity, bullying, rudeness, abuse and just plain uncivil behavior between one another. It is easy to convince yourself that things are getting worse, not better. It’s easy to get down in the dumps about our collective future. Even looking at global events from a big-picture perspective, it’s easy to think that religious-inspired radical extremism — not just Middle

Easterners perverting Islam, but also cross-burning and abortion-protesting Americans perverting Christianity, just to name two examples — is a setback. Many of us envision a future of peace, love and understanding for all, but there is a perfect timing to everything under God. Not everything that happens can be understood. Feel with the heart. Let’s use these examples of global connection as a sign of the times, as a harbinger of greater peace, as a testimonial to the power of love, the energy that binds us all together. And let’s not wait for mass casualties to share love with each other, in our neighborhoods, in our cities and nationally. Let’s create projects that unite the world in ways we’ve only begun to imagine. As Nike says: Just do it. a Tim Miejan is editor and co-publisher of The Edge. U.S. Health Freedom Congress to convene July 31 in Northfield Riverplace Market new on Mpls riverfront A new community based farmer’s and artisan market, Riverplace Market — operating from 3-7 p.m. on Wednesdays through the end of September, is located on the cobblestone courtyard of Riverplace, on the beautiful historic Mississippi riverfront in Minneapolis. Situated just across the bridge from bustling downtown, Riverplace Market is in a prime location at Hennepin and Main Street. The market, a rain or shine event, is another integral part of the urban/farm linkage that has continued to rise in popularity, mostly due to the growing consumer interest in obtaining fresh products directly from the farm. Riverplace Market allows consumers to have access to locally grown, farm fresh produce and products made by Minnesota makers. “We have a nice selection of vendors at the market,” said Mary Waldrop, regional asset manager with Sentinel Property Management Corp. “Customers can expect to find farm fresh produce, baked goods, flowers, sauces and spices, honey, nuts and products from local artisans as well as food trucks each week.” New artisans and food producers are welcome to apply to participate in the market. Limited single spaces are still available for select weeks. Contact Stephanie Hansen at 651.983.4766 or by email at Stephanie@stephaniesweeklydish for the latest availability. a 8  www.edgemagazine.net

Health freedom is the goal of many organizations and countless individuals, and the U.S. Health Freedom Congress brings many of them together in one place to get to know each other. Health freedom is “the inalienable right of all people to access the health care products, practitioners, and truthful information that they need for their own health and well-being.” Many wonderful groups are working for exactly that, each having a different focus and expertise. Groups are working to protect us from mercury in dentistry, electromagnetic radiation, and other toxic exposures. Other groups are working to ensure the right of parents to have vaccine exemptions, or the right to choose alternative therapies for their children. Some organizations, like the Minnesota-based National Health Freedom Action, are working to ensure the right of holistic practitioners to practice. Other organizations, like Minnesota-based Organic Consumers Association, are working to maintain organic standards and ensure labeling of GMOs. All of these organizations have many values in common. The National Health Freedom Coalition (NHFC), also based in Minnesota, felt there could be much potential in their working together for common goals. That’s why on July 31 through August 2 NHFC is sponsoring its 11th annual U.S. Health Freedom Congress. Like-minded organizations will gather at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., and continue their work on developing ways to collaborate more. As these influential groups build cooperative relationships, the energy of the entire health-freedom movement expands. The summit is open to the public. People can attend for the entire three-day event, getting a chance to meet and interact with national leaders who are working towards a lasting impact on our health-care choices. Or they can choose to attend just the Health Freedom Awards Banquet and keynote speech.   This year’s keynote speaker, on Tuesday, Aug. 2, is Ronnie Cummins, co-founder and international director of the Organic Consumers Association (OCA — www.organicconsumers.org) and its Mexico affiliate, Via Organica (www.viaorganica. org). OCA’s primary strategy is to work on national and Ronnie Cummins global campaigns promoting health, justice and sustainability that integrate public education, marketplace pressure, media work, litigation and grassroots lobbying. Over the past two decades, Cummins has served as director of U.S. and international campaigns dealing with sustainable agricultural issues, including food safety, genetic engineering, factory farming and global warming. The summit’s Meet and Greet on Sunday

evening will include the showing of the “I Stand for Health Freedom” videos from the 2015 Congress Opener, featuring presentations from two lawyers and their experiences along with a local farmer and the issues he faces. Monday evening, after the Congress activities, Clifford Carnicom will speak on Geoengineering; afterwards, the movie Vaxxed will be shown, followed by a Q & A session with the film’s director, Andrew Wakefield. Vaxxed documents an alleged cover-up by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of a purported link between the MMR vaccine and autism. The National Health Freedom Coalition, along with her sister lobbying organization, the National Health Freedom Action, were born out of the Minnesota movement in the 1990s to ensure consumer access to holistic practitioners. The successful passage of MN Statute 146A, which gave unlicensed practitioners an exemption from the medical practice act, led people from throughout the country to contact Diane Miller, JD, an attorney and key drafter and lobbyist of that bill, for help in passing similar legislation in their states. NHFC and NHFA were launched in 2001. Today, ten states have a safe harbor or similar bill that protects access to holistic practitioners. NHFC has a passion to increase solidarity in the broad spectrum of the health freedom movement. “We all want to protect the right of people to have what they need to be well,” Miller says, “and that sometimes means fighting for our right to choose our own healing path, our right to have accurate information, our right to decline treatments, or to avoid toxic substances.” U.S. Health Freedom Congress summit tickets are: $25 for the Keynote speech only on Tuesday evening (no dinner); $60 for the Keynote speech and Organic Banquet; $200 for entry to all events on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday (includes food for all days). Compassion: Just one human witnessing another by Tina Kolniak “What is the most important thing you learned from that experience?” That is the question I am asked most often about witnessing the passing of my twin babies in 2013. It sounds crass, but I am glad people ask.  The level of spiritual growth that my daughters’ deaths have brought me is very difficult to explain. But my answer to the question above is undeniably…compassion.  The truth is, I don’t think I ever lived as a fully sentient being before that. I didn’t embrace the true nature of life — one of constant duality rocking between darkness and light – until I looked down the barrel of the figurative gun that took my life away in those precious moments I held my babies while they left this world.   After that traumatic, yet powerful, experience I never looked at humans the same way again.  Though what I had gone through

brought me a whirlwind of physical and emotional pain, enough to last a lifetime, instead of becoming endlessly numb I became keenly aware of the suffering I felt in others. I saw it in their body language, I heard it in their words, I felt it in their energy, but their eyes were always what gave them away. Later, I learned it was just recognition. For some unfathomable reason, and most unwillingly, I had become the newest member in a club I never knew existed. And I was meeting new members. I’ve always been an empath, but it was different now. I reached a new level of awareness that made me incredibly uncomfortable. I would walk into a store and become struck by an energy that floated around dismally like a heavy fog. As I made my way through the store, I would inevitably find the source lingering down an aisle, and I’d wonder, “What’s your story?”  Though I would’ve much rather run away, and I often did, it became easier

to just witness the other human. And on occasion I’d find someone who was willing to look at me. As our eyes would meet, just for a moment we would recognize our common path of heartache. You see, you can’t hide these things from people who have been touched by deep grief and despair. You can heal your scars, but those scars borne by your heart are part of the person you become. And it’s ok. My discomfort in these encounters lessened as I realized we are just two pebbles on a beach weathering the same tides and the same storms. I learned that we all have a story. I learned that we all suffer. Compassion is just one human witnessing another. I see you. a Tina Kolniak holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Juris Doctor. original flat line you were just looking at. From the perspective of knowing, you can see what your true desires are. You can see what things will truly bring you joy. You can also see the mental blockages that keep you from these things, the thought patterns that hinder your true desires from manifesting in your experience. Just by seeing them, you recognize that they are not needed and immediately let them go. You’ll find that your old way of “working though things”over a period of time to see results and to heal mentally is no longer necessary, because the mental, “clean-up” is done on a level beyond time. It is instantaneous.

World Peace is happening Awakening to knowing, to truth, is a choice each of us can make by Charlotte Rose A state is available to all of us where there are no questions and no answers — the state of knowing. From this perspective, fear loses its hold on us. Have you ever asked yourself why bad things happen? The reason is quite simple. As humans, we are choosing to take action based on fear-based thoughts. Where do fear-based thoughts come from? They come from other thoughts! When we generate thoughts from the mental level, they are not original thoughts but ones that stem from existing thoughts and mental patterns that are programed by thinking the same way over a period of time. By assuming the perspective of knowing, it allows us to uproot the mental pathways that thoughts travel through — and doing this allows us to have inspired thought. Inspired thoughts come from an expanded perspective. This perspective has been observed by many people over the course of human history and it has gone by many names. I like to call it “the place of knowing.” You may have heard it called transcendence, mindfulness, beyond the ego, a higher frequency or dimension, etc. When we meditate or do creative things by just “letting things flow,” we are in this place. We are practicing how to become more comfortable and familiar with it. In fact, this perspective can become your normal state — your default state — the 10  www.edgemagazine.net

state you are in when you are completely relaxed. From this perspective, it doesn’t matter what is happening outside of your being, because you can see the entire context of your existence and you recognize all things outside of you as being a part of you on a higher level. In the same way that a cell is a part of your body, you are a part of the energetic fabric of the Universe. From this state of knowing, you understand that you are the Universe, you are the whole thing, and you have an influence on each of the moving pieces. Affecting the pieces

How can you affect the pieces that are outside of yourself? You can affect the way that the world around you interacts with you by changing the way that you interact with the world. You have the power, as a conscious co-creator of this universe, to make choices by setting intentions. You don’t lose the ability to work from the perspective of “you” when you assume the perspective of knowing. Instead, you are just able to work more effectively because you can actually see what is going on, on the level of “you.” Try thinking of it like this. You are a 2-D drawing, and from the perspective of the paper you can only see lines as being flat. When you elevate your perspective to 3-D, you can look at the paper and see the whole design rise up off of the paper from that

Setting an intention

Just as the 2-D perspective can be seen more fully from the 3-D perspective, the 3-D can be seen more fully from the 4-D (time) and the 4-D from the 5-D, etc. The perspective of knowing exists beyond the 4-D perspective of time. This is why I use the words perspective and dimension interchangeably. This means that your entire life simply exists, but you experience it from a perspective that unfolds over a period of time. The perspective of knowing is a higher dimension, and information can be accessed by your individual self from your Higher Self upon request. Your Higher Self is part of the entire energetic fabric that is the universe. No information is off limits. In ordinary life, we limit ourselves from having access to it by believing thoughts that are untrue. From the perspective of knowing, truth is felt, so untrue thoughts are exposed and fall away. Setting an intention is just becoming aware of an existing desire. Setting an intention to experience something is realizing an experience as being true. Free will

What we’re really talking about here is fate or destiny and free will. How do these concepts work together to create our experience? Fate is the natural course of events that will take place if they are unopposed — if no resistance is created. Free will is the ability to make choices within fate. As the person receiving and creating the experience, you have the free will — or choice — to create resistance to your fate or to move within it, in harmony. Balance is our natural state. You have the choice to be in balance or to be out of balance. Our problems in life stem from the fact that many people don’t realize that they have this choice. I want to help you wake up and live life as if it is a lucid dream. I want you to understand that you have the ability, and the choice, to be in balance with love, peace and joy — and you have the choice to be out of balance, which creates inner and outer turmoil, pain and fear. I want to help you become self-aware.

All negativity comes from being out of balance. Whether or not you realize that you have this choice, you do. You are choosing balance or imbalance in every moment. You also have the ability to make a different choice, to re-set your choice, in every moment. So, instead of letting one thought lead to another, you can observe the thought, label it as a thought, and choose to let it go because you know that it does not feel balanced. These decisions are made from the place of knowing and are translated to your individual perspective as a feeling of truth. You can tune into this frequency of truth, love and joy in many ways. You can feel it as a physical sensation in your body, you can feel it as a relaxation of your mind, you can feel it as love, as the absence of fear, as a newness, or as a deep joy. All of us have experience with this feeling of truth. You can come to recognize it, be comfortable with it and never again leave it. The feeling of truth

So, how can you cultivate this feeling of truth, this expression of knowing? In a way, this is a trick question, because there is nothing that you have to “do” to assume your natural perspective. If you must think of it in terms of action, you can say that it is inaction — total relaxation. It is the letting go of the need to be doing and figuring out and thinking, and it is the allowance of thoughts and actions to be inspired. Just allow yourself to assume your natural perspective. Many people call this stage of our life experience “awakening.” Many people have lived and died without ever getting to or through this stage. Some people will die without ever getting to it, not because they are incapable of it, but because they never choose it. The choice is always ours to make. This is not a choice that can be forced upon someone. By living your truth, by being in your natural state of knowing,

you will bring others with you by example. People throughout human history have lived from this state, and they have inspired others to do the same, through their exampl. As more and more people “awaken” to their true nature, we pick up speed in doing so as a collective human organism. The current stage of human evolution is one of awakening. Letting go

I spent a lot of time in this stage. It was very difficult for me not to actively make this happen and, instead, just allow it to happen. This stage is about trusting your true nature, and it involves the dissolution of many thoughts that make up beliefs that are, in essence, your identity. This is an identity shift, or rather, the ability to see yourself as being more than just the self you are used to. People have called this stage the dissolution of the ego, awakening and the shift. I call it relaxing. It’s best not to understand it as a learned skill, but as letting go of everything that is no longer needed in your life. We create belief structures with the intention of keeping ourselves safe from others — other people, other places, other events and other concepts that we believe to be a danger to our value and well-being. When we realize that separation is just an illusion and that we are all just moving pieces of the infinitely divisible “one energy,” we lose the need to hold onto false beliefs that keep us from being guided by our intuition. We return to our natural state of one-ness and inspiration, where the individual self is in balance with all of the other pieces — and everything that we experience, individually and collectively, moves fluidly in the path of least resistance, love and joy. Why we exist

If the universe is just one energy and we are all just pieces of it, what is the purpose of our existence? We exist for the soul purpose of experiencing. The universe is   see

July horoscope: Refill the wells Mercurial Messages through the Zodiac

by Heather Roan Robbins As July begins, our thoughts are called back to our biological and chosen family, home and homeland. We need to work together; our chosen family can help. Let’s engage what nurtures and protects us as Mercury, the Sun and Venus all run together in Cancer, leader of the emotional water signs. Our moods can be oceanic, but like Cancer’s symbol, the crab, we can thrive in these depths. Also like the crab, we may want to guard with shell and claw when we’re feeling vulnerable. Gardens ripen and sweet intuitive moments flow, but events may challenge us to solve problems in a way that aligns with our spiritual path as Venus opposes Pluto — the planet of death, rebirth, power and transformation — on July 1, and the Sun and Mercury follow on July 7-8. We can appreciate a more celebratory, if melodramatic, mood as Mercury and Venus enter Leo July 12-13, followed by the Sun July 22. Throughout July, Mars in Scorpio stirs the depths of our psyche, challenging us every day to step away from retribution and aggression, and step towards transformative focus. Aries (Mar. 21-Apr. 19)…Find a balance between professional concerns and potentially sweet work at home through mid-July. Don’t give into discouragement. If you’ve been unusually private about intimate problems concerning sex, money and resentments, introspectively do your homework and talk it out mid-month. Look for pleasantly rowdy sociability after July 21. Taurus (Apr. 20-May 20)…Your neighbors, community and siblings need your strength and stability as the month begins. Don’t try to talk people out of their feelings, just be there for them. Look for heart-opening opportunities

experiencing itself through our individual perspectives. We need the illusion of separation to do this. It’s not a process of getting rid of anything. All we are doing is elevating our perspective so that we can experience ourselves more fully. Our natural state of being is one of no resistance. Everything moves and flows in balance with everything else. As more of us return to this natural state, we influence those around us to do the same. Fear stems from feeling that we must have a purpose other than this. Our individual value comes from being a piece of the whole. We are automatically worthy of having balance, of having joy, of having love, of having peace, because it is natural to us. When we see ourselves as separate, we begin searching for our value in other things, such as thoughts (beliefs) that hold us in a state of imbalance, or, resistance. For example, you might search for your value in your appearance, thinking, I will be valuable when I look like this, or, I am valuable now because I look like this. You might search for your value in other things, thinking, I will be valuable when I have this much money, or, I will be valuable when I have this 12  www.edgemagazine.net

July 6, 20 and 31. Use your stubbornness to stabilize, not argue, to enrich the home front July 21-31. Gemini (May 21-June 20)…Your material resources need attention as the month begins. Don’t let financial tension interrupt your primary relationships; worry isn’t needed (particularly July 7), but foresight and organization are needed. Engage a good creative outlet for abundant feelings after July 22. Cancer (June 21-July 22)…You may be in the spotlight whether you like it or not this busy month. Instead of resisting, find a safe, centered way to lead. Where generosity flows from you, it returns back to you from a different source. Stabilize mood swings July 6-8, after July 15 let others take the stage and feed your introverted side. Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)…You may feel unseen as the month begins, but you will be needed; the action is behind the scenes. Be gentle and supportive through July 12. Unexpected challenges can create opportunities mid-month. You come more into your own, life unfolds with more health and graciousness after July 22. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)…Work the crowd, love your friends, be solid and further your hopes and ambitions as the month begins. Imagination can flow through the first week. Be cautious and exercise great self-care July 7-11. Take a chance to retreat, introspect and make personal changes July 19-30. Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)…Even though it’s summertime, engage opportunities to work effectively and be appreciated as the month begins. Stay centered, rested, and available July 4-8. Make new connections, network, people find it easy to like you mid-month. Work less, rest and renew more after July 20, summer really begins to shine. 

much free time, or, I will be valuable when I create that thing, or, I will be valuable when I have that experience in my life. These ideas are obviously untrue, because they assume value to be temporary and dependent rather than assumed and inherent. You are valuable simply because you exist. You are valuable because you are the Universe. Without the illusion of separation, there is no one to give value and no one to receive it — it is just the natural state of all things. When you understand this, those false thoughts that you believed you needed to continue to think to protect yourself from things that might steal your value fall away, because they are no longer needed. They never were needed — you just couldn’t see it from that perspective. Our natural state

So, how can we return to our natural state of being? Allow your thoughts, and your questions, to be inspired. Allow the delightful adventure to unfold. From the level of knowing, where there are no questions and no answers, the fun comes in the inspiration that flows to us effortlessly and brings us beauty and delight time and time again. When you start to shift into this expanded perspective, you will be amazed

at the ways that the Universe plays with you and brings miracle after endless miracle into your experience. When you hear something that is true, you recognize it on a soul level, although your mind may still reject it. You will create experiences in which truth is presented to you again and again until you accept it. If I am not the person whose voice brings answers to your questions, if you are not ready or willing to hear me, then truth will present itself to you in another way. If you do hear me, if you do feel the truth in my words, then you will express this truth to others in yours and through you balance will continue to spread throughout our collective human experience. Trust that those who need to hear you are listening, so speak. Trust that those who hold the answers to your questions are speaking, so listen. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)…People will take you seriously but won’t see you clearly through the summer. Don’t worry about being understood, just do what needs to be done; you will be appreciated afterwards. You love solitude (particularly July 3-9) not loneliness, but you need to speak up to receive. Watch your attitude late July, it reflects back to you. Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)…Another growth opportunity; small challenges bring a chance to find a balance with both freedom and maturity as the month begins. Don’t try to jolly people out of their rolling emotions until July 16: your enthusiasm is needed and appreciated later in the month. Just be careful with other people’s resources, as carelessness causes tension. Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan.19)…Focus on significant relationships, their presence, lack, or needs (particularly July 6-9). Stand by them, but take as good care of yourself as you do them, and all will be stellar. Utilize an opening to create stable relationships July 18-20, rest rather than get edgy July 29-31. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)…As the month begins, if you feel out of your element, review and adjust your relationship to animals, daily health routines, work systems. Use gentle work to stay grounded through mood swings July 7-11. Opportunities expand after July 12; work your network. Be reliable July 19-27, and doors can open. Pisces (Feb. 19-Mar. 20)…Mediate and help folks understand one another, but remember that although you can help, you can’t fix them. Work towards steadiness as emotions wobble July 7-8; look for an opportunity that begins as a loss. Nature supports your transformation A Pleiadian Message

by Christine Day Beloved ones, we greet you. At the end of June an energetic redesign was created on your planet, and through this anchoring a powerful frequency of love was forged. This pure frequency has been created with the potential to expand the framework of light that has been entering the earth plane through the Sun’s rays. This energetic redesign has been orchestrated through an unlimited timeline that has opened up to effectively support those of you ready to move to another level of awakening. A pure frequency of love is held and stabilized within the Covenant that has just opened up and anchored on your Earth plane. The Covenant has been predestined to be here to enable you to realign to sacred components of Self now. The frequency of love that is held within the Covenant contains an aspect of the Sacred within you, and it is a part of the One consciousness of which you are a part. This forceful and transformative happening has been preordained for you to receive an anointing through this essence of love, creating the possibility for and accelerated reunion of Self within your heart space. Another part of the transformative element of the Covenant is what we call the action of “the lifting of veils.” This lifting creates a series of dimensional openings that we liken to “a curtain lifting on a stage,” revealing Truth. At a certain moment, these dimensional openings will move you naturally beyond the 3rd dimensional illusion, revealing to you an understanding and Truth that exists on a higher consciousness level. Through these revelations, you will naturally open into the Higher Realm initiations of Self. This expanded frequency of consciousness is designed to bring you into a sacred reunion with the energy of Christ and Mother Mary. They will both play an

14  www.edgemagazine.net

essential role within your awakening by bringing the purest teachings of love to you. They hold up for you a mirror of compassion. They have come in this higher profile through a new format of connection, bringing support to each one of you in your ongoing self-resurrection process. Expanded openings

Within this frequency change of the energetic setting of the planet, a birthing of your electrical systems within your physical body will take place. From these expanded openings within you, you will have the capability of housing your own sacred unlimited light form within your body. This will set off an intense metamorphic process that will begin to activate and transform your physical cells and energetic field. This shifting process will create an enormous change within your perceptions of yourself and the role that you are to play in the world and within the Universe. This transformational process will release

many of the discrepancies of the 3rd dimensional illusion that you have been holding within your body. As you move through this metamorphosis, many physical changes will take place within your body. Many of these changes will be expressed within your physical and energetic body and they will be seen and misinterpreted as illness or disease. Adjustments will be required by you, as you experience unfamiliar symptoms within your systems. The activation of this metamorphic process will create a rapid, shifting process within as you go through an intense birthing cycle of opening a new electrical system through your physical body. Within this metamorphic process there will be many indefinable “first time” experiences opening up to you. There will be emotions and feelings that you will not being able to be describe or reference to any previous experience. These dynamics arise from an expanded multi-dimensional timeline that anchors through your newly birthed electrical system. These changes will

be taking place on many multidimensional energetic levels within you at the same time. There will be multiple shifts taking place in your physical and energetic body as you go through this intense adjustment period. This natural process

There is a deep need for you to begin to understand that this change in the dynamic within your life will play an important role in your transformation, enabling you to move beyond limitation on this planet. These processes are to be expected now and they are designed for you to “let go” and move naturally beyond the veils. You need to be prepared to experience even deeper states of confusion and “not knowing” than you have previously. The launching of this new form of Self can be likened to a death — a rebirth process where nothing will seem familiar. This process needs to be understood by you so that you can allow the monumental step of “letting go” within you. Now is the time to move into your river of light and allow this natural process, this birthing, to take place. Letting go is essential, and then you need to allow the current of your river to take you effortlessly to where you need to be placed in this moment of time. There is no handbook on this part of your journey, however, there are many hands being held out to you, to support, to steady and to guide you forward. This is an aspect of the Covenant’s role, to hold a steady platform for you to

naturally align to your “river of light.” Remember, you are but a drop of water in a huge ocean of light, and your river leads you into that ocean of light, the Collective God Consciousness, of which you are naturally a part. It is time for your separation to end. This is the time for you to rejoin the collective energy of the One. We are holding each one of you as you take this timely step back to Home! During this transitional event you can expect the unusual, the unexpected, as you move through this rapid metamorphosis. We need you to take in this information of impending change. Do know that you have set this whole sacred process in motion, and this is the perfect time for this next phase of your birth. Expect change

The very best way for you to work, to align to these changes, is to first expect them and then to open to them. Secondly, be willing to utilize what you have been given in the form of support. Allow yourself to fully integrate and flow with this very new and different dynamic of transformation that is coming. The energy of nature is now holding sacred frequencies designed to support you in this transitional phase of your awakening. The inner power and consciousness that is held within the various aspects of the natural forces can support you in your integration. This can be found within the Sun’s rays of brilliance. The Yoga of Max’s Discontent A Conversation with novelist Karan Bajaj by Tim Miejan We’ve read the iconic spiritual novels — Siddhartha, The Celestine Prophecy, Way of the Peaceful Warrior, Illusions and Jonathan Livingston Seagull — and have taken the epic pilgrimages through light and darkness, from naiveté to wisdom, and have embedded these stories into our collective consciousness. With his fourth novel, the first to be published outside of his native India, Karan Bajaj’s The Yoga of Max’s Discontent has quietly emerged as another novel to accompany us along our personal journey toward enlightenment. Bajaj introduces us to Max Pzoras, a child of Greek immigrants who grew up in a dangerous New York housing project and, yet, managed to triumph over his humble upbringing. Now a Wall Street analyst, Max finds himself tormented wth anguish over his mother’s recent passing and questions about suffering and mortality. Synchronistic encounters with a street vendor is all the impetus Max needs to begin a quest to find answers in the farthest reaches of India, where he almost freezes to death on a hike up the Himalayas, and finds himself in an ashram in a drought-stricken village in South India. Unlike his protagonist, the author grew up in the Himalayas and found success in the United States. Bajaj, 36, balances a stellar corporate career with a spiritual life that includes meditation, yoga and sacred travel. He once worked as a director for Kraft Foods, a brand manager for Procter & Gamble, and a management consultant for the Boston Consulting Group in India, the Philippines, Singapore and the United States. He was nominated to be a “Top 40 under 40 Marketer in the U.S.” by Advertising Age in 2007. He was also selected as one of the “Top 35 Under 35 Indian” by India Today. Bajaj is currently the chief marketing officer of Aden + Anais, a global provider of cotton muslin products for babies. Bajaj’s new novel, The Yoga of Max’s Discontent (Riverhead Books), is already receiving rave reviews. The book was inspired by Karan’s one-year spiritual sabbatical, traveling with his wife, Kerry, learning yoga in a South Indian Ashram, meditating in complete silence in the Vedantic tradition in the Indian Himalayas, and living as a Buddhist Monk in a Scottish monastery. He spoke with The Edge by phone while working in London about his writing and his perspective on meditation, yoga and spirituality. 16  www.edgemagazine.net

to do right now is truly answer my most deepest, most unarticulated questions for myself through my writing in some form. Now, I think of my writing as having two foundations: entertainment and meaning. The meaning portion is really me trying to answer my questions. The entertainment aspect of it is how I make a story that can make people turn the pages. I did not have any philosophy at all when I wrote the first novel. I was just wanting to capture experiences that I thought would be inspiring for Indians who are trying to break free from the very high-pressured family environments and do their own thing. Would you say this new novel, The Yoga of Max’s Discontent, really gets to the heart of where you are as a person? KB: Yes, absolutely. The questions that I

Karan Bajaj Karan, what inspires you to write fiction? Karan Bajaj: In the first 27 years of my life,

I never had written a single non-technical word. I went to engineering college and went to business school. I never knew I could write fiction of any form. The first novel that I wrote was because I was having very interesting sorts of experiences, for Indians of my generation. India went through a dramatic revolution after the ’90s when our economy started opening up for the first time and Indians were now experiencing the Western life, if you will. Drugs and sex and a lot of those influences came in as the economy stabilized, and we were growing up and experiencing that. The Indian writing market was very small at that time. Our literature was very attuned to what Western audiences were interested in, so everybody was writing about the slums in India and magic realism or stories about Hindus and Muslims and partition. The reality that we were growing up in was very young and vibrant, and nobody was capturing that part of India. I started to backpack after getting out of college. I hiked and did a lot of things nobody was capturing in art at all in India, so I wrote my first novel. It was a very, trippy, experiencefilled novel, and it ended up doing very well in India, because nobody was writing about that at that point. How did your ambition as a writer evolve over the years? KB: That has evolved a lot. What I’m trying

ask in the novel are my questions, but then again, I did want to make sure that I didn’t write it like a Ph.D. piece. I wanted to write something that was very entertaining to read. The hardest part of this novel was how to make a deeply spiritual transformation journey page-turning and adventurous. That was the hardest part to crack for me. Was it trial and error for you to get that aspect of the book correct, or did it just come to you as you went into it? KB: It was a lot of trial and error. What

helped me a lot was that I chose an American lead protagonist, because that liberated a lot from my own knowledge. If I had approached it from the perspective of an Indian main character, I think I would have assumed a lot of knowledge and I would have resented the presence of the author. A lot of the book is about karma and rebirth. Things like that are very attuned to my life as an Indian, but when I approach it from a perspective of a Westerner, then I have a skeptical, yet kind of novice view on it. I think that choice really liberated the story to be its own story. A lot of the conclusions that Max reaches on his own are not mine at all. So, I think that allowed the story to take on its own momentum, to have its own propulsive force. Your blog indicates that you have traveled extensively, climbing Kilimanjaro, Machu Picchu, and other peaks. Is that why your novels are always about characters on some sort of a journey? KB: The journey becomes a very good

metaphor for the hero, either leaving the

ordinary world to go to the extraordinary world, or being forced to leave the ordinary world. What has happened in most of my books is the call to the extraordinary world, the hero’s push, or that push has come to him. And it allows you to show some evolution in the character’s life, as well. KB: Exactly. Then the whole hero’s journey

kicks in and the book is not so much a thinking novel. It has a lot of thoughts in it, but it was not about a guy reflecting and sitting and thinking. It was about how, when you get to an extraordinary world, you reveal your entire actions. The story becomes very fast-paced because he has to act, because of all that is so unfamiliar to him. And through his process of action, he is revealing himself as a character. That is why journeys become very good metaphors. They always have the character put into circumstances that reveal him. If I had based my characters in New York and had them just sitting and thinking about life, it would be like what contemporary U.S. fiction is about. That is very heavy, literally, for me. It doesn’t become mainstream enough because the pages don’t turn themselves. Your new book is fiction, and yet there are aspects of it that reflect your life — your experiences in India with yoga and meditation and your experience in the corporate world — and you’re able to blend those together. KB: They are, but in a sense the novel is

a reverse of my life. This guy leaves the corporate world behind to go to India and becomes a Yogi in the Himalayas. I have kind of done the opposite, growing up India and coming to the U.S. Even after all my journeys, I’ve always come back to my life in business. A lot of experience I have borrowed from my life, but they are also a little bit opposite from my life. When I started conceptualizing it, I would have probably based it more on my life and had the character come back to the U.S., but the story took on a life of its own. The concept of karma is a beautiful concept in Sanskrit. The whole idea of karma is that every being has an innate tendency — the karma of ice is to be cold, the karma of fire is to burn, the karma of the trees is to grow and bear fruit. In the same way, a human has a certain thrust. What I’ve realized is that my thrust is to be in the world, like in the world of business. But the thrust of the character, as I got into the journey, was to be in nature, serving in nature and not serving in the world. As I got deeper into the character, I found he is most alive when he is in physically hard circumstances, when he is using his hands. I think his karma became to serve in nature and not to serve in the world, while I

“What happens when the yogis find the unborn, un-aging…this thing they are looking for?” “I don’t know sir,” said Viveka. “But I see the faces of those who stop by my cart here. They’re like the faces of the soldiers in the army and the people in my village. Their smiles are hollow, their eyes are hungry. The yogis’ faces were different.” “Happier?” “Not exactly, sir, more like…silent, complete. Like the mountains around them. Asking no questions, seeking no answers, just certain — as though they knew exactly who they were.” think my karma is to be in the world. A number of people really have a sour taste about the corporate world. How do you embrace the corporate world and see beyond it at the same time? KB: That is a good question. I think nothing,

at an objective level, is either right or wrong. For example, if you get into the details of living in an ashram, which I did for six months in India, you find that ashrams have more politics than corporations do. Once you get into the details of the management structure there, people are pulling each other down and everybody wants to be the head honcho. I don’t think of the ashram world as being any more spiritual than the corporate world. So I don’t know if there is really an objective truth about either. I liken this to what Buddhism says about the individual, that change starts with the individual. I think it is really about purifying your own actions, and I have seen that in my own life. When I came to the U.S., Kraft sponsored my green card, so I was at Kraft foods and I owed them, I felt. But then as my life purified more and more, I felt that that corporation was not doing the right things for the world. That led me to a company that makes organic baby products. It is very pure in its actions and how it deals with others. I think it is really a personal journey of purification, rather than whether something external is going to be good or bad. Anything external will always live in that polarity — a combination of good and bad. As I said, I think Kraft doesn’t do the right things for the environment, but on the other hand, I met people there who really improved and enhanced my life and were genuinely very humble, open people. There are no absolutes. KB: Yeah, there are no absolutes. To what degree did you explore yoga and meditation when you lived in India? KB: I have been meditating for many years

now, but I think for quite a few years my

relationship with meditation was very intellectual. I would do meditation for all the usual things that you would think about, to be more calm, be more productive, relieve stress. But over the last two or three years after my mother died from cancer, I think meditation became truly a means to a deeper connection as I was searching for a deeper truth within myself. Meditation became almost more spiritual than material in nature over the last two or three years and it has deepened a lot as a result of that. My wife and I took a sabbatical and we went from Europe to India, where we lived in an ashram for six months and did meditation and yoga vigorously, like from 5:00 in the morning until 10:00 in the night in very austere circumstances. I think then my practice became less superficial, more like the traditional definition of what meditation was: to truly find oneness. What are your thoughts on how yoga and meditation are practiced in the United States? KB: I think it is at a very nascent level —

perhaps that’s the best way to put it. There are two dichotomies here. In the West it is a very physical practice, and even meditation is a practice to become productive and more at peace. In the East, you think of the deep spiritual practices as a journey of complete dissolution of the self, the ego. In the West, it is the opposite, like you are using these practices to further your ego by being more productive, being more this, and getting more out of your work and earning more money. In the East, the whole idea is that you are dissolving your essence through these practices. So, these approaches are very different, but I hope what happens is that once you are on the journey, you evolve your own position. Hopefully along the journey one will realize the true, purest essentials of the practice. KB: Exactly. That has happened to me.

When I started, these were very functional practices, as I said, productive to lose   see

weight, or whatever, and now it has become a very spiritual kind of practice. In the new novel, you introduce the yogis who put everything into their spiritual journey — complete devotion to transcending the human body. What were your experiences like in India? Were you able to get to know some of these people? KB: Oh, yeah. Almost every yogi

that appeared in the book is either somebody I have seen and met and spoken to, or someone who is in my three degrees of separation — I know the source who talks to me about it so well that I believe his story. For example, the two Babas that I have met personally are the guy who lives only on milk — he has been living on milk for years — and the standing Baba, who’s practicing the austerity of standing. Those are people that I have met myself. Regarding some of the super powers that I reference, like walking on water, I haven’t seen people do that, but once you get into the science, a lot of it starts to make a lot of sense, for example, like people being able to read your mind. It’s very logical, because words are just a grosser form of thought, and thought is just a grosser form of feeling. Somebody who is purified with life enough would be able to read your feeling before it becomes a word in your mouth. It is not very hard

All of these four natural elements are designed to support your rapid transformation through your powerful integration process. Know that the mountains, the trees, the flowers and birds and animals all play an extended sacred role for you at this juncture of your unfolding. Your sacred imprint

The Covenant holds your sacred Imprint, acting as a chalice to hold the Imprint framework of your sacred Form. As you choose to birth the next phase, you begin to draw from your individual Imprint and anchor it through your systems. There is nothing more potent and revitalizing for you at this time as you utilize and align to the Covenant energies that are here for you in your awakening process. As you become your sacred Form, you

to understand — and you meet people like that. Almost everything is very factual and scientific and not exaggerated. Some people say that the answer is not going to the Himalayas, but being able to embrace our humanness right where we are by perceiving even negative experiences as gifts and treasures. What are your thoughts on that? KB: I very much agree. I think

it is a little bit about karma again. In the yoga sutras, they have this beautiful analogy that the journey of life is like the flight of an eagle, or the journey over multiple lifetimes is like a flight of an eagle. First, the eagle stretches its wings high, high, high, and experiences everything that the world has to offer in terms of flight. It’s growing and flying and it’s experiencing, and then it brings its wings down gracefully and that is the completion of the journey. In a sense, there is a role for growth and experiencing the world, and pushing the boundaries of that, and then there is a time to bring it within. All people are at different stages of that journey. There is no absolute truth that the guy sitting in the cave in the Himalayas is useless, because he is at that point in his journey where he has experienced everything in the world and does not have an attraction to it anymore. All he wants to do is spend all his time in silence and contemplation. And then there are people

are able to carry this frequency of light consciousness that is electrical in nature. As you draw from your Imprint, a total electrical transformation will open through you as you begin to activate and utilize your new electrical system. This process will enable you to hold the full electrical light frequency of your sacred Higher Self nature within your physical body. We, the Pleiadians, hold the container of the Covenant in place for all mankind. You choose when you begin to source through your Imprint framework within the Covenant and access your own Higher Self Imprint. Your time is now to step forward and begin your own sacred activations — you birthing you. This has always been an aspect of your pre-agreed destiny this lifetime, and only you can choose the moment of realignment. We are bringing a process for you to

like me who are not there yet, who are still the eagle flying high right now, still experiencing more in the world and growing as a result of that — and that is my journey. There is no absolute truth that it is better to be in the world or be out of it. I think it is just your own truth and where you are in what feels completely in line with your own formation. We all have our own journey, don’t we? KB: Exactly. When I started on the path, too,

I really thought I would become a yogi in a cave, but I didn’t have clarity about my path. When I evolved in the ashram for six months, I learned a lot, but I realized that it was not my natural state of being. So, I came back to the world. What has been one of the most mystical experiences you have had on a travel journey for yourself? KB: I remember sitting and talking to a guy up

in the mountains without speaking a word. That didn’t seem as mystical and unusual as it felt later, because he could just answer my questions with just feeling, and I didn’t need to use any words to articulate my thoughts at all. Those kinds of incidents happened a lot in the Himalayas. Others have been in places like Bhutan, for example. The moment you enter Bhutan, you notice that there are no traffic lights. It is almost like you’ve stepped into a Shangri-La or a vortex of time 200 years ago. Those kinds of experiences are very much of the countryside of Bhutan, where people are truly happy in the sense of not creating and wanting more. Other quite mystical experiences were like spending time in the Gobi desert in Mongolia. Talk to me about the 414 formula you have adopted and what that means. KB: The formula has evolved a little bit over

the last decade. What I do is work for three or four years and then I take a year off, and then I come back again and work for three or four years and then take another year off. It is not

begin to access and activate your Imprint energy that is being held by the Covenant. This is a simple process that begins a new cycle for you as you consciously choose to begin this next level of your path. Know that many of you are already on aspects of this path, are already experiencing some of the strong symptoms of change. These activations will support you in accelerating your process, and support you in being able to navigate more easily through this time. In this moment, there is an essential need to understand the importance of your process of “letting go” into your river of light. Each one of you has your own unique river of light that holds a frequency that is unlike any other in the Universe. Through your frequency, you are known and received within the Collective One. The Covenant carries the sacred connection to your river of light. As you access your unique Imprint, you open into your “river of light” and it becomes the bridge.

about just working and then writing for a year. That is not how it is structured. It is about doing very conscious goal-driven activities for four years and then taking a year off in complete surrender to discover facets of myself that I don’t know exist and exploring interests with no commercial value associated with them at all. The whole idea is that the combination of tight activity and slack activity allows me to be both productive and creative at the same time. In the four years that I am actually working in a proper job, I am earning money and I’m also writing with a lot of discipline on the side. Then in the year that I take off, I don’t have any goals. I just surrender to experiences like traveling or learning yoga and meditation or just living in a completely random place like Mongolia or Portugal or Bhutan. Then when I come back, I am much more intuitive, creative, right-brained. That kind of system has been working very well for me. But, if I was a complete slacker who was just doing nothing but traveling, I don’t know if I would have the discipline to be productive and create this job, and on the other hand, if I was always disciplined and productive, I don’t think I would have that mystical connection that lead to great work. I imagine you have finished writing this novel a while back. Are you working on a new one? KB: No, not at all. Right now I am just diving into

life again. I just have nothing new to offer right now as an idea for a book. I feel like if I were to write something, I would probably repeat the same idea in a different story. What I need to do is to just deepen my well. I’m just experiencing life now, you know? a For more information on Karan Bajaj, visit www. karanbajaj.com. Alignment process

This is the process to align to the Covenant: 1. Bring the palms of your hands to your heart space. Remember your heart space is contained within the whole chest area. You will connect here by using the Conscious breath, and placing that breath, like a soft wind, into your heart. 2. Bring your sound, EE…, directly into the heart cells, feel an opening up through your heart. Use this sound until the opening feels complete for now. 3. Breathe into the opening and let go, claim your heart space. Use the Conscious breath again, placing the breath into the core of your heart. 4. Bring your sound, EE…, placing it directly where the opening exists, just let go and Be in that space. Use this sound as many times as you need.   see

built into the human experience as a means for us, as souls, to evaluate how the human part of us chooses to respond to challenges. Loss or failure can limit us or it can make us stronger and wiser with a richer life experience. However, when we glimpse behind the scenes and view life as a temporary role that we are playing, losses and failure don’t paralyze us as much. In other words, as we become more awake to our permanent identity, we become freer. Be more fully and consciously present   in each moment of life to experience more joy. It reminds me of Emily’s famous line in the play Our Town: “Is anyone really aware of life while they’re living it?” This is a theme that we all can relate to, for we often go through life in our heads rather than appreciating the underlying love and beauty that is available in each instant, often only noticing it when it’s gone.

Lessons learned from 3,000 past life regressions “Man is a soul, and has a body. When he properly places his sense of identity, he leaves behind all compulsive patterns. So long as he remains confused in his ordinary state of spiritual amnesia, he will know the subtle fetters of environmental law.” — Autobiography of a Yogi, by Paramahansa Yogananda by Eric J. Christopher After guiding more than 3,000 past life regressions over the past 15 years, I’ve noticed three common themes or soul lessons that often emerge during the latter part of the session when the Earth life is over and is being reviewed from the vantage point of the soul. There is such wisdom in these lessons that I wanted to share them with you:

  Pleiadian

5. Now, you are going to begin to align to the Covenant energy. You need to stay in your heart space, and begin to align to the Covenant by using this sound: AE STAE NAH. Take a conscious breathe and let go. Open your awareness into the space, breathe and let go. Now repeat this process slowly, being aware of a growing presence around you of the Covenant. Maybe you will see, sense or feel this Presence as a building light 20  www.edgemagazine.net

Do not live from fears or guardedness.     You will regret the times that you allowed fears to hold you back or limit your life expression in any way. A common example is withholding your expression of love by guarding your heart from emotional pain. Other regrets include choosing security over pursuing a passion, love or joy, whether it be marrying for status and money instead of love or holding back on following a dream. As Wayne Dyer once said, “Don’t die with your music still left in you.” Be more proactive in creating your   life experience rather than simply reacting to what life gives you. I’ve heard many variations of this same missed opportunity. Unfortunately, we cannot get through life without loss or failure, because they are

consciousness moving around you. Repeat this as many times as you feel is right for you, it is essential to continue letting go as you work within the process. Do not rush this process! When you are ready, you are going to begin to align to your Imprint that is being held within the Covenant: 6. Bring your awareness back to where you are holding your heart space. Take a breath right into your heart space. 7. Now bring in the sound:

We can understand these lessons intellectually, but yet not fully feel and experience the truth of this wisdom. The value of past life regression is that it can allow us to integrate deeper soul truths at the level of the body and subconscious mind, thus helping us to more easily live from them in our daily lives. This is because towards the end of the session, the background noise of the thinking mind is silent and you are fully anchored in the here and now, which is actually a higher dimension of your being that is saturated in peace, love and clarity. You are more deeply connected to the soul part of you that is always “here” and never goes away — not only throughout the years of your life as the body ages, but even long after the body is left behind. a Eric J. Christopher has a Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy and is a Certified Regression Hypnotherapist. Eric’s life passion has been to help clients connect to their inner wisdom that can uncover and heal the roots of limiting fears and beliefs, thereby enabling them to experience the freedom, peace and clarity of their wise soul self. He specializes in past life regression therapy, life-between-lives therapy, and also present life deep emotional healing of the body and subconscious mind. He has a private practice in St. Paul. DAN STAH. Feel a quickening begin within your heart and a connection from the Covenant to your heart open up. Keep using the sound as you begin to source your Imprint energy from the Covenant into your heart. 8. As you build this connection you begin to naturally align to the current of your “river of light.” Enjoy the collective moments of your journey, being in the moment!

CHOOSING LIFE WHEN DECIDING WHAT TO EAT by Cynthia G. Piano It was seven years ago when I returned home to Illinois to rest a bit from a hectic, painful descent into the spiritual underworld of Kaua’i. That is a story for another day. Today, I will tell you about the beautiful, magical, miraculous transition of my mother. She was almost 200 pounds when I arrived, which was a very dangerous condition indeed for an 82-year-old, 5' 2" beauty — the hometown flavor of an Ava Gardner look-alike. We spent a few weeks of trips to our favorite fried chicken restaurant that was blessingly only blocks away, relishing the BBQ and garlic wings, and perfectly dipped chicken legs. The pork roasts, potatoes and carrots were baked to deliciously spiced goodness, and the thought of a salad was a distant memory. No, I had not given up eating meat, yet. Then something happened. Like a light switch turned on to bright or fan set on high, I started to read labels and educate myself on healthy food. Drs. Oz, Hoffman and Mercola fed me with valuable information backed by scientific fact and observation. I also started to read The Health Ranger and other natural food alarm experts to awaken me to my faulty eating ways with “scared straight” tactics. As I sought more information, I found more and more. I pondered over labels in the grocery stores, so much so that I was asked numerous times if I “needed help.” Yes, in fact, I did. And so did most

a

of the food-buying public. I began to observe the number of unhealthy people in my community who were just counting the minutes before their next appointment at the doctor’s office or their next round of pills. Some were not physically overweight and appeared to be rather healthy, yet their addiction to the medical industry solutions were sending up red flags everywhere. Mom was still on blood pressure medicine, and I knew not what else. My belief and trust of the invasive and controlling, not to mention expensive, American medical traditions had been abandoned years ago, save for a teeth cleaning once every year by a wonderful dentist. My mom and I discussed what we had heard and read, and we decided to change our eating habits, and her drug habit. Over the next five years we ate almost all organic foods, cut our meat consumption 80-90 percent, drank copious amounts of Fiji and Crystal Geyser water — even   see

HOW TO JOIN THE HEALTH FOOD REVIVAL Spirit Leaves

by Janet Michele Red Feather Healthy eating is not a new concept: like any major religious movement, it has merely undergone a revival. Inspired by this month’s subtitled reference to the “newly converted,” I’ve exploited religious metaphors to illuminate a path to healthful shopping. Despite my advanced years, I am yet a callow fledging in the area of healthy eating. I offer the vantage point of a fellow novice — an initiate —in recommending that newcomers observe the following guidelines: Give up the shoulds. Don’t punish your   self by succumbing to the “tyranny of the should.” When I set out to buy all the foods I should be eating, I wind up in more trouble than when I began. Raw kale is highly nutritive, but in salads, it tastes like Christmas trees with ranch dressing. Buy what you love, but strive for additive-free, non-GMO, organic foods. Think traditionally. Shop at stores that   emphasize healthy fare. Resist the temptation to return to familiar grocery franchises that only “deign” to carry organic foods: they may discount but fail to understand the volatile shelf life of non-chemically preserved foods. You’ll often find a single token aisle replete with dusty lids and browning vegetables. These stores don’t

really hype health food, because to do so threatens the profits garnered by selling cheaper, poisonous food from conglomerate suppliers. Follow in the footsteps of the devout.   Let’s face it: we newbies need all the instruction we can get. It’s best to follow on the heels of ardent and (forgive the pun) well-seasoned foodies. I tend to stalk (at a respectable distance) the 30-something women at Trader Joe’s who shop together. They comment incessantly upon their arcane food preferences. On one particularly auspicious visit, I overheard a thin, radiantly healthy blonde say to her equally fit brown-eyed companion, “Oh! Oh! Here it is. This is the best organic butter! This is the only one I buy! No animal fats, lasts forever, and it tastes so good.” Thank them in your hearts for the endorsement and then stealthily swoop in to grab the object of their adulation. Mimic those of the cloth. All neophytes   need mentoring. Those of us raised in the age of TV dinners and processed foods have learned some rather dastardly eating habits. To overcome this dilemma, try sampling foods from truly organic chefs in restaurants like The Good Earth in Edina, or Braza Rotisserie in St. Paul. Read menu descriptions, and shop for those ingredients and with those limitations in mind. Emulate the culinary clerics initially, later adding your own flair to the dish. Become as a child. You’ve heard of this   teaching from various spiritual walks. To enter holistic heaven, one must come as a child. Today’s offspring include Indigoes, Crystals and Earth Angels. The Crystals, especially, have very defined preferences. Their helicoptering parents are happy, as long as the kids choose healthy items. These

SHOPPING FOR FOODS THAT ARE BEST FOR YOU by Warren King The book of Matthew in the Bible reads: “Therefore do not worry saying, What shall we eat? What shall we drink?” So you can see, the question of what to eat has been with us for a long time. I have tried to discern which diet will be the best to optimize health for each one of the nearly 10,000 patients I’ve seen. At first, I put patients on my diet, which at that time was a vegetarian macrobiotic diet, and to my amazement some people 22  www.edgemagazine.net

felt worse and gained unwanted weight. So I started doing a type of pulse testing to see which of the many nutritional regimens were best for that individual. No one diet works well for everyone, because all bodies are different. But there are foods that are healthy for most people and others that are almost universally stressful on the system. In general it is best to use the majority of foods found in the perimeter of the store and the

clever young ones know that anything in the health food aisle will instantly have their parents’ stamp of approval, and that frees them to select the most fun and flavorful foods in the lot. I discretely follow parents pushing carts containing 3-5 year olds and watch what the kids reach for. Fruit strips and Annie’s Cheddar Bunnies seem in vogue. By incorporating the child’s eye view, you will ultimately open the door to a heavenly cupboard of healthy snacks. Treat the body as the Temple. A hot-air   balloon is not a comfortable home for the Soul. Even if one has not lived gluten-free in the past, it’s helpful to try out the products so labeled. Skeptics often discover that a meal without gluten is a meal without after-bloat. It’s truly wonderful to be able to feast without afterward feeling sluggish, puffy and awful. That is the greatest built-in reward for sensible healthy food shopping. In writing this article, I have taken the first step on a journey of a thousand miles toward sensible food selection. I may have donned only the habit of the novice, but I am bound and determined to walk the talk, or eat the walk, or something more natural and discerning in my relationship with the food that nourishes and sustains me. Amen! a Janet Michele Red Feather, J.D., M.A., has taught literature and composition for 18 years at the university, state, tribal and community college levels. She is currently a tenured English faculty member at Normandale Community College. Janet enjoys her role as Ceremonial Singer for Native American ceremonies, singing traditional songs in Mandan and Lakota. bulk section, avoiding most of the processed foods found in the center of the store. Fresh vegetables and fruits can be almost half the diet for many people. Without being tested, you can experiment on yourself to find out which proteins are best for you. Some people need animal proteins such as wild fish, naturally raised poultry, eggs and red meat eaten more occasionally, such as grass-fed beef or buffalo. From my experience, pork appears to be a problem for almost everyone. Others thrive on beans, seeds and nuts for protein, and an even smaller percentage can digest soy. You have to see how

your digestion and clarity of mind feels after eating different foods. In general, people with type A blood can consume a more vegetarian diet, while people with type O blood do better with animal protein. It seems that people cannot handle as much grain as they could in the past. Some people, especially if they are overweight, should avoid grains altogether, while others can have a smaller amount of grains, especially quinoa, buckwheat and millet. Twenty years ago, people could handle 40 percent of their diet as grains; now it is more like 20 percent. Many are now sensitive to gluten in general, like   see Shopping on p. 24

in our coffee! No GMO, no CAFO, no HFCS, and no” -ites” or “-ates” on product labels was the rule of law in our house. Mom courageously and gradually weaned herself from all medications and visits to the doctor, since there was no reason to go if prescriptions were not needed. We also began to read about the side effects of some of the drugs that mom took throughout the years: cataracts, loss of cartilage, weight gain, and loss of energy. We cannot say that all her “dis-eases” were caused by the drugs, but as we progressed with our healthy food regimen, her energy came back and she dropped over 70 pounds. Her skin began to glow, and she even got some of her dark hair back. A few years later, she needed a doctor’s signature to renew her automobile handicapped parking card, so off to the office she went. Their jaws hit the floor when she walked in. They hardly recognized her, and they did not fully know who she was until she spoke. She told the doctor what she had done, and stunned, he wanted to “do some tests” to assess her “health.” She would not have any of it. “I feel great,” she said. “All I want is for you to sign my paper here for my new parking card.” He obliged and she left the office with a big grin! That was two years ago, and mom has more energy, healthier skin and dark brown hair now than ever. She looks years younger than many others her junior, and exhibits her sharp mind with any political conversation you would want, or not, to have. She takes great pride in her new smaller-sized “Life is good” organic cotton t-shirts, too. Her neighbors still

marvel at her transition, and they come to visit as she weeds and plants her garden, and takes out the garbage. Even with the very proof standing before them, though, they are still captured by the “system,” fearing change. The corporate monetary intake from health “care” in this area is enormous thanks to our aging and drugaddicted population. One can only dream of the heavenly repurposing of that money! We still get our fried chicken every couple of months or so, and cakes, pies and chocolate candies made with real sugar sprinkle themselves between meals occasionally. We have added a little uncured bacon and grass-fed beef, too, as our local Aldi’s carries some new brands. As for me, organic whole milk, pure water and a little fine wine are my beverages of choice, and a great New York cheesecake gets my juices going. I extended my natural conversion to the few beauty products I use: goat milk soaps, shampoos, and vinegar and baking soda for laundry detergent. Love and kindness to the environment have become a way of life, too. Yes, our lives have changed immensely for the better. Now, if I could just get her to quit using that dandelion killing herbicide. OUR FEATURED TOPIC: HOLISTIC FOOD SHOPPING

CHOOSE ORGANIC, NON-GMO OPTIONS by Kristin Johnson What I recommend here are tips for making the best choices possible for you, your family or anyone that you are shopping for. Let’s start with produce. Before going to the store, research to see what produce is in season — you will get the best prices for anything that is in season. Here are some great examples for summer: Fruit — Strawberries, Blueberries, Watermelon, Grapes, Plums,   Apples Vegetables — Asparagus, Spinach, Broccoli, Cucumbers, Peppers,   Carrots Go to a farmer’s market. Most towns have them, and whatever they are selling is what is in season. You get it straight from the farmer, and usually get the best prices! You can also join a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). Some farmers offer these seasonally, some annually. You pay the farmer directly, and then each week you either pick up or have delivered your box of fresh produce — and some farms have meats, eggs, cheeses, jams, and other delicious options! You get a variety of food, and even get to try new veggies/fruits that you have never had before! The best option is to go organic and non-GMO — whenever possible. Be sure to ask at your farmer’s market or CSA whether they are organic or non-GMO. When you find a great sale on veggies, fruit or meat, stock up, because most food items can be frozen. If you eat meat, look for organic, grass-fed, grass-finished meat.   Shopping

wheat, spelt, rye, oats and barley, while for others their sensitivity is to wheat or corn exclusively. Unfortunately, much of the rice is contaminated with arsenic and cannot be eaten too often. Rice grown in the Southern U.S. has some of the highest levels of arsenic, while basmati from California, India and Pakistan has the lowest. Sweeteners also are not well tolerated by most people. Some can handle a small amount of honey, maple or rice syrup, but sugar or “cane juice” should be avoided. Stevia has no calories and is well tolerated by most people if used in minute doses. But don’t over do it, for you don’t want your tastebuds to expect that everything has to taste so sweet. The best oils are usually coconut and olive oil. The most harmful oils are canola, corn and soy. If you just totally avoid canola oil and cane sugar and wheat, then the majority of packaged foods in the middle of the store will be eliminated. Although most vegetables are good for you, the commonly used nightshade vegetables — tomato, potato and peppers — should be minimized and not eaten more than 2 times a week for many people. If you have joint inflammation or arthritis, try cutting out the nightshade vegetables completely. Fermented foods are very important for 24  www.edgemagazine.net

Read the label. If you aren’t sure, ask your butcher or meat department. More stores now have these options available. Same goes for eggs, dairy or yogurt. It should state organic. Stay away from grain-fed anything, especially if you have food allergies or sensitivities, for if the chicken ate corn, then you will be ingesting corn. If you purchase packaged “food” items, read the labels carefully. Many of my clients have food sensitivities and allergies, and they need to ensure that the ingredients they are eating are not crosscontaminated in the factory where their product or food was made. If you aren’t sure about the quality of the product, research company websites or call them directly and ask about where their food is sourced and whether there is any cross-contamination. It is better to be safe before you eat it, instead of having a bad reaction later, suffering unnecessarily. When you are looking for oils, for baking or roasting or to dress up a salad, cook with extra virgin olive oil with a high heat point. Olive oil has minerals, enzymes and other compounds that don’t work well with heat, and they can be susceptible to rancidity. It is better used for dressings and lower temperature cooking. Consider avocado oil or butter as a better option for baking or pan cooking, as they have a higher heat point. Finally, in addition to choosing organic and non-GMO foods, remember to choose foods from the colors of the rainbow. If you eat well, you will feel well! a Kristin Johnson is a Certified Holistic Health Coach and owner of Heal Organically. intestinal health and can often replace the need for an expensive probiotic pill. The best source is fermented vegetable or sauerkrauts that need refrigeration, as well as miso, kombucha and kimchi. Many people will feel better off dairy products, and the best tolerated dairy products are kefir, especially goat kefir and sometimes yogurt. Goat cheese is more digestible than cow cheese for many people. Although fruit is often considered healthy, it does have naturally occurring sugars and should not be a large part of the diet. The healthiest for people living in the Northern hemisphere are berries, pears, apples, cherries and plums, and it’s best to minimize tropical fruits that can’t grow in the region, such as banana, mango and pineapple. However, a half lemon in water in the morning is a good way to cleanse the liver, even though it is tropical in origin. There are a few foods that seem to be beneficial for most people: 2-3 teaspoons of ground flax seeds a day, 2-3 teaspoons of coconut oil a day, and kale, which can also be enjoyed as kale chips, miso soup, and sauerkraut. Fish oil is helpful for most people, but you can get this through eating sardines or herring, as well. Coffee and chocolate can be problematic for many people and if you can’t live without, it does not mean that it is good for you.

If you don’t have an alternative practitioner who can test you for a custom diet, try to eat simply for a few days. Eat mostly vegetables, northern fruits, quinoa, millet, buckwheat, fish, poultry, sauerkraut, lemon water, flax seeds, and drink spring or reverse osmosis filtered water. Avoid soy, tomato, potato, sweeteners, wheat and gluten, corn, dairy, peanuts, and tap water. After two weeks or so, try adding back the foods you were avoiding one at a time and just notice how you feel a few hours after eating them. Are you tired, bloated, foggy headed, gassy, achy or are you focused, energized, clear headed and have no digestive symptoms or cravings. Dietary changes can be difficult, but if you are suffering it is one of the most important and less expensive ways to make a major shift in your health and functioning. After a short time you will see how these homemade natural foods taste delicious and can help you to thrive in your life. a Warren King has used energetic methods of healing for over 24 years and has worked with over 9,000 people to regain their health.
