Dr. Ulness returning for June workshop Dr. James Ulness, professor emeritus in psychology at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., will lead a workshop on “Facing Our Future” from 2-6 p.m. Saturday, June 11, in The Church of St. Francis at 3201 Pleasant Ave. S., Minneapolis. The workshop is sponsored by the Minneapolis Theosophical Society as part of its Ancient Wisdom / Ancient Mysteries series of lectures and workshops. The four-hour program will seek answers to major life questions, such as why we chose to be born, whether we all came here with a purpose, and whether souls ever become lost. In his workshop, Dr. Ulness will sort through many deep questions that trouble people today during the workshop, including: Why do I sometimes feel so incomplete? What might I do about it? What is my role as ego in my own development? What is the role of my Higher Self? Why is there so much fear and anxiety? How can I become what I was created to be? Is there such a thing as Reincarnation and Karma? What is their purpose? How does a higher, more moral, conscience enter into human consciousness? The Edge Interview with Dr. James Ulness by Tim Miejan Dr. James Ulness, professor emeritus in psychology at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., knows we are all experiencing unforeseen and unparalleled levels of agitation and fear at this time, during this incredible period of change in which cultural norms and established systems are being dismantled and reformed to meet the needs of a more awakened society. That is why he is presenting a four-hour workshop on “Facing Our Future” at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 11, in The Church of St. Francis at 3201 Pleasant Ave. S., Minneapolis, sponsored by the Minneapolis Theosophical Society as part of its Ancient Wisdom / Ancient Mysteries series of lectures and workshops. “We have no way of dodging what is coming,” Ulness said. “I hope that people will find the inner courage to face consciously the waves of change that are streaming towards us from the future. People sense this and are turning to counselors and psychotherapists to relieve their mounting anxiety or give them some understanding of what is happening. “Old soulless psychology will be of little help. I have seen, I’m happy to say, a new and better psychology develop since I was in graduate school. Let’s call it spiritual psychology. You might say it is ‘just what the doctor ordered’ for an ailing humanity.” Dr. Ulness has integrated the best of mainstream psychology with Eastern and Western spirituality, the humanistic psychology of Maslow and Rogers, the depth psychology of Carl Jung, the transpersonal psychology of Michael Washburn and Ken Wilber, Deci’s psychology of self-determination, and the methodology of Assogioli’s psychosynthesis, with the insight of Rudolf Steiner’s spiritual science. He spoke with The Edge about his perceptions of our current age and his upcoming workshop. Dr. Ulness, you call traditional psychology practiced by counselors and psychotherapists “soulless.” Why? Dr. James Ulness: When Jungians and psycho-

synthesists speak of “psychology with a soul,” they are using the term “soul” in the centuriesold manner in which our inner being is related to the spiritual realm. Many people in the general public still think of it that way. But that usage became anathema in the field of psychology, which was trying to establish itself as a science. Science in the Western world had aligned itself with materialism, which has no place for “soul” or “spirit” in its descriptions, definitions and explanations. If you were to look through all the textbooks used in graduate level psychology courses, you

are not likely to find anything approaching the notion of “soul.” When Jung spoke of “modern man is search of soul,” he was thinking in terms of the clients he worked with. I should make it clear that not all counselors, or psychotherapists, practice their profession in full accordance with the training they received in graduate school. It is true that academic psychology deals with thoughts, feelings, sensations, perceptions, attitudes, etc., but they avoid the word “soul” and, at most, use “mental” instead, although they prefer to fall back on neurological and chemical concepts. It is, however, possible to have a psychology based on spiritual science rather than on material science. What developments in psychology give you hope that the spiritual component of who we are is being addressed? JU: Jungian Psychology and Assagioli’s

Psychosynthesis have been around for 100 years. And Humanistic Psychology and Transpersonal Psychology have been around since the late 1960s and ’70s. These are all still beacons of hope for me, but they are a very small part of the field of psychology. More recently, what is being called Positive Psychology is hopeful. However, students at most of our great universities could pass all the way from undergraduate level up through masters and doctoral levels without perhaps even hearing about these kinds of psychology. Counseling programs are a bit more open, but not enough to please me. After graduating and going off into practice, teachers, counselors and psychotherapists are much freer to learn about and develop a high level humanistic approach or even a spiritual approach than they were able to in graduate school. Much can be found on the Internet and in books that is not just pop-

psychology. This all gives me hope. What can someone look for, or ask about, when seeking a counselor or therapist who will best serve them? JU: If you break a leg in an acci-

dent and are taken to a nearby hospital, it hardly matters what the medical doctor’s personal philosophy of life happens to be, as long as he or she is competent at setting a bone. But, if the problem bothering you is existential, then it makes all the difference in the world what the therapist’s world view is. So, wise selection of a psychotherapist is very important. Many people now select who they are going to go to by asking their friends about their experiences with this or that counselor or therapist, much the way we have come to do when looking for a dentist or medical doctor. And during their first appointment, they can ask questions that people didn’t used to ask a generation or two ago. In this way, they can sound out by the answers given to these questions where the counselor or therapist is on their own spiritual journey. Depending on your problem, you won’t be helped much by a therapist or counselor who has not developed further than you are. Many people today are searching for their purpose. Why is that? JU: There is much more

freedom in the shaping of our destiny now than just a few generations ago. This freedom shifts responsibility onto their own shoulders as to what they are going to do with their lives. Even in their late teens and 20s, most people are discovering that a life without meaning and purpose is not satisfying. So, they start asking “What should I be doing with my life? What is my life purpose?”

What is causing the seeming increase in fear and anxiety that we feel at this time? JU: So many people can sense

that we are in for great waves of change on many levels, which will greatly change the status quo. And, since many have adjusted to the status quo, the likely changes make their ego

feel threatened and insecure, because it will mean making big changes in one’s lifestyle — especially since there seems to be so little we can do about it. I will speak about this at deeper levels at the workshop. Some believe that everything happens for a reason, though others are adamantly opposed to that. What is your perspective on this? JU: It is true that everything

happens for a reason, mostly karmic, but also because of our free choices and decisions. To people who have not yet begun to unite with their Higher Self, many things will be attributed to “chance.” Those whose lives are guided by their Higher Self know that nothing is due to chance.

You say that waves of change are streaming toward us from the future. Has that always been the case, that change is directed from the future, and is it ultimately being directed by ourselves, from a higher spiritual level? JU: Whether a person feels that

they are moving into the future or that the future is coming toward them, they are experiencing an increasing level of anxiety. However, those who feel they are moving into the future feel that they have more control over the choices and decisions they make. In ordinary times, this would be sufficient, but these are not ordinary times. I will speak at the workshop about why this is so. Our understanding of how karma works makes a big difference in the way we live. We have shaped our present lives through past karma, and we shape our future destiny by the karma we are creating now. What is the spiritual world calling us to do in this Age? JU: It is calling us to become

consciously aware of our spiritual essence and working with it in developing our Higher Self. We are being asked to overcome anti-social behavior in relation to others, and take a genuine interest in them as persons. We need to overcome all traces of selfishness.   see Future on p. 10

On a larger scale, we are being called to accept and appreciate cultural diversity and become more cosmopolitan by overcoming parochialism, nationalism, racism and religious differences.   Future

What changes can we expect to see in the spiritual community? JU: Spiritual communities will be self-

governed as much as possible by the people and for the people. They will allow and encourage freedom of ideas as much as possible, as well as forms of spirituality. Economically, they will learn to anticipate the needs of each other and do what they can to meet those needs, and out of this an “associative economics” will develop. We will see healthy individuals working together for a common good. It has been suggested that insight from angels and guides will come to an end as individuals are better able to tap into universal insight themselves? Do you see that happening? JU: Yes, in the far distant future, but

not now. When we have developed further and transformed ourselves into complete alignment with our Spiritual blueprint, then our Angel will not have to bear it for us and is free to go on to other activities. Anyone who thinks that they are anywhere near this level of development already is suffering from severe self-deception.

What suggestions do you have at this time for those who are seeking to reclaim a greater connection to their true self and make a difference in the world? JU: Two things are necessary: we must

learn to still our outer mind and emotions and become very calm and serene inside; and then follow the promptings of the inner Voice, which can be more easily heard when the clatter and worries are stilled. This Voice, which comes from what might be called the Great Indweller, will prompt us not only to greater inner development but also to service in the world. a

June horoscope: Community balance Mercurial Messages through the Zodiac

by Heather Roan Robbins We can enjoy our politics or we can feel frustrated by it, but as June begins we’re sensitive to the interpersonal dynamics in our families, circles and communities, thoroughly aware of politics in our social network and our national and international relations as Jupiter forms a challenging square to Saturn. Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, symbolizes the liberal desire to generously give, to be free and expand our worldview, but it can create codependence. Saturn’s defining ring symbolizes the conservative, traditional, disciplined approach, which can slip into contractive restrictions. When they square off like this, we notice the tension between these principles, both in life and in politics, but it’s an illusion to think we can expand without discipline, or cut back without hope. We need both Saturn and Jupiter. Neptune squares Saturn on June 17 and asks us to take the ideal high road, and the Summer Solstice on June 20 begins the harvest for fruit and karma. Our job is to meditate on a fair and healthy balance between discipline and exploration, and envision cooperation, in work, love, spiritual practice and community relations. Aries (Mar. 21-Apr. 19)…Although you are usually confident, some recent uncertainty may have unsettled your way of operating. Your generous sense of service brings fresh support from neighbors and siblings and can help focus your work. Look for a healing moment

around June 12; use feistiness with consciousness around June 29 as Mars turns direct. Taurus (Apr. 20-May 20)…Notice how your family’s attitude towards money and resources helps or hinders you, and choose to take a creative approach to free this pattern. It’s tempting to spend this month, but first ask yourself what are your real resources, and what do you truly need. Be extra kind to yourself around June 3 and 30. Gemini (May 21-June 20)…So many people want something from you that you may feel stretched thin as the month begins. Enjoy the buzz and return to trusted friends, family, sanctuary to reconnect with resources. Set healthy boundaries; be there for those who actually need you. The birthing of your Golden Heart A Pleiadian Message

by Christine Day Beloved ones, we greet you. We place a call out to each one of you to begin to witness the beautiful flow of light from the Sun’s rays as it breathes its brilliance onto your Earth plane. This light reflects the depth of your own brilliance within. As you choose to open up to receive the mirror of its reflections, you can begin a new process within yourself, like never before, a new path of illumination. There is much for you to receive now as you align to the energetic mirror of light held through the Sun. Through your conscious choice action of working with the Sun’s light, a transfer energy of this mirror will activate and align you to your own pure source energy of your Being. When we talk about your action of “being,” we refer to you opening a doorway to yourself, to your Higher Self. This doorway has been closed to you in this lifetime. Now you are, once again, retrieving the keys to your own doorway of light, taking back access to that which is rightfully yours to utilize. You have been in a separated state in order to have your full human experience, but it is the time for you to move into the next phase of the plan. Your new path is opening up before you. 12

This is the time for you to begin to return to your place of origin and realign back to your power. As you begin this aspect of your journey, you will be incorporating your Spiritual Being with your human experience. This, of course, has always been the plan. There is a “calling” energy, like an echo that is active within the Sun’s rays. The frequency of this echo floods the heart and interacts directly through your heart cells, allowing a transfer of your own divine light to begin to birth through you. This light, your light, has the capacity to nourish you on a deep level. This access of your light begins to create an opening, a natural access point, creating a doorway to your place beyond the veils. Within this multi-dimensional place, you will be able to begin a stabilization process through your own pure light frequency of your Higher Self energy. The direct experience

This has always been the time for this awakening to take place, opening the potential for you to have the direct experience of creation as you choose to reach forward and engage with the reflected rays of the Sun, activating your journey back to Self on a multi-dimensional level. A new imprint of energy birthed on your

planet in late May, carrying the energetic frequency of this time to support you in the process of this long-awaited reconnection. This sacred imprint has created an energetic framework of immense proportions to weave itself throughout the Earth plane. We liken it to a giant webbing of light. A form of the God Consciousness is enfolded within the webbing. As you work within the webbing, your aspect of the God Consciousness is able to link in and awaken through you. This link naturally will align you to what we call a framework to support you at this destiny call. This framework is designed to support you in being able to move beyond the thirddimensional separation so you can make your way back to the original blueprint frequency of light that you are. Your original blueprint frequency contains the full aspect of your Higher Self, your pure Source Divine element of love. Now is the time for you to begin the next phase of your experience here on the planet by aligning, and then integrating, levels of your divine frequency into the cells of your heart. As you take this step, the cells of your heart can open fully into their multi-dimensional purpose, into their fully self-realized state. Know that because your heart cells carry a multi-dimensional frequency, they are able to play a pivotal role in being able to fully align to your home space, where your pure Source Higher Self exists. Your heart can then transform on a multi-dimensional level, becoming a natural transmitter, and you form a central place within which all aspects of yourself can arise. You become your own creative life force within the Universe as you can take your place within the Collective Consciousness. Your Golden Heart

This is the task, for a gradual and steady building of your own centerpiece within your heart, within your body, the birthing of your own Golden Heart. This framework has been designed to support your full integration of your own Higher Realm aspect within your physical cells, forming what is called your Golden Heart. Remember, this framework has its own element of consciousness that carries the Godhead energy. Know that within the sacred makeup of your Golden Heart you hold a unique aspect of this Godhead energy. There is only “the One.” We, you, all within the Universe, are “the One.” Through this Truth of “the One,” we all exist, perfectly aligned and synchronized within the light. You are who you have been waiting for. This sacred process is being revealed now because it is the time for many of you to begin this homecoming journey on a conscious level. Now is your time

through conscious choice to reach through the Sun’s rays and activate the process of meeting your own pure source of brilliance and to begin the next step journey of birthing your Golden Heart. You have come to be here on the Earth plane to have your experience of completion while still in the physical body. The birthing of this frequency imprint heralds at this time your next phase of completion within your self. The prophecy has spoken of this sacred timing. The sacred texts have been written and the energy of this written word within the texts is to be activated now to fulfill a role of holding an anchor for those of you who are ready to commit to your selves in this moment. Remember, the moment is multi-dimensional. This means there is continual unfoldment taking place within each moment. There is no end, just a beginning that continues indefinitely… just as you do! Time is the great illusion here on the Earth plane. This transformational dimensional space is being held open by the framework and by an aspect of your Higher Self. Kundalini & its Awakening: A Conversation with Chrism by Tim Miejan Editor’s Note: This interview has been edited for print. Read the entire conversation online at Chrism, a California-based spiritual guide who assists people worldwide in the activation and awakening of the kundalini energies, will return to the Twin Cities in July to present his fourth seminar in the Upper Midwest. Kundalini, a dormant energy in most people’s bodies, is not recognized by Western medicine but has been long known by spiritual devotees aspiring to enlightenment. When awakened, kundalini rises from the base of the spine and completes an energetic circuit throughout the chakra system and the body’s internal organs. The awakening process usually is not subtle, and assistance in the process by someone like Chrism is highly recommended. “Kundalini, an evolutionary energy, is designed for our next step toward humanity’s luminous physical and spiritual expression,” Chrism says. “Kundalini is in everyone, an untapped resource of divinity, at the base of the spine. Knowledge of this divine life within us and its awakening is a natural birthright for all people.” Chrism spoke by phone with The Edge about kundalini and what participants can expect from his upcoming seminar. What is kundalini? Chrism: For those who are unfamiliar, the really

quick explanation is that kundalini is the Divine Consciousness that resides at the base of the spine of the human being. It resides there until a person reaches a certain level of spiritual and emotional evolution, and that will allow the kundalini to awaken or activate. Kundalini is the

source of the force within each individual. If it is not activated, then it is just a dormant energy until it’s awakened? Chrism: Correct — dormant in the under-

standing that it is not coming into the person’s physical being and starting the enlightenment process upon them. However, the libido and many of the survival mechanisms of the body will use aspects of that dormant force to protect the human in the world, to allow that human to continue to evolve towards an awakening or an activation of the kundalini.

Does kundalini spontaneously awaken in some bodies? Chrism: Oh, yes. That’s a very common mecha-

nism or vector of kundalini expression through the body. A person can have a sporting accident, a skiing accident or a car accident, anything that would create a fracture of the tailbone or lower spine, or even having a disc bulge. Things of that level can activate the kundalini. A person would tend to think, “Oh, my gosh! I had this accident, and in this accident my kundalini awakened.” Well, I am going to suggest that there was no accident there. I have not found in my years of teaching that kundalini comes upon a person in an accidental way. It definitely matches a level of karmic dispensation that the kundalini itself is able to measure. Kundalini does come up spontaneously in some people. A person will just be living their life and all of a sudden — boom! — the kundalini comes up and their life and their reality has changed in a very substantial and strong fashion.

For people who may incarnate into this body at

a high spiritual level, could they be born with the kundalini awakened? Chrism: Typically what will happen is a

person will have activated or awakened the kundalini in another life, but still has a ways to go within their spiritual maturation, and indeed, they may come into life as an awakened child with a lot of the skill sets of a Siddhic nature intact within them, such as telepathy or clairvoyance or clairaudience. A lot of these things I also had as a child, and I am one of those people of whom I am speaking.

For somebody who is going through life and on a spiritual level they are maturing and their kundalini spontaneously awakens, what would they notice from a physical or energetic sense that that has happened? Chrism: Typically they will notice some of

the exalted skills or what the Sanskrit people call the Siddhi skills or the Siddhic natures, and all of a sudden they will be able to hear another person’s thoughts or perhaps they will see people who have passed away or in their sleep state they may be encountering what could be described as exalted deities coming to them and teaching them about their life, about what they need to do. They also will experience some massive energetic rushing through the spine. A lot of people have compared it to a freight train coming up the spine and exiting out the top of the head. A lot of people will experience tremendous levels of bliss and ecstasy and levels of love that really defy typical expression within the human being. I’m talking about off the charts levels of ecstasy, bliss and love. This is a fairly good indication that a person is encountering the kundalini. They also will feel like something is not right. They may feel their major organs expand, the kidneys expand, the adrenals expand. Their body may be putting out more of the fight or flight hormone, too, and so they may experience high levels of anxiety, nervousness and fear that are not common for the individual — certainly if they are drinking a lot of caffeine or they are not hydrating themselves in a way that

They are going to want to have a really hard look at their diet and make the changes that need to be made to find balance within the kundalini awakening. So what you are describing is a common part of the awakening or enlightenment process that has been described in various cultures throughout history? Chrism: Correct. The bushmen of African

know about the kundalini. The shamans in South America know about the kundalini. Of course, the practitioners of the ancient kundalini understandings in India know of the kundalini. We have many different people in all walks of life that have the kundalini awakened, and it is a common theme throughout all cultures of this world, and they have their own name for the kundalini. The shamans in South America call it the Red Serpent energy, because some will see a lot of red and a lot of serpents at times. Some will have actual visions that seem as real as life, visions that are exceptionally real and detailed.

What is your connection to kundalini? How did you become aware of the kundalini that has awakened within you? Chrism: As a child I had a lot of the Siddhic

skills intact: telepathy, communication with species other than human beings, and other types of scenarios, and so I quickly learned that I had differences from what other people had. I just learned to try to quiet that down, not talk about it so much, after not receiving a lot of support from my parents or from society in general. As I reached the age of 30 the kundalini

dormant in this body awakened and it was not the easiest process, because our culture does not really support it. Our culture does not support us having freedom of thought or engaging in thoughts that are not accepted by our current cultural standards, such as having levels of wisdom downloaded into your head from a spiritual source. This is not typically acceptable within the Western, technological civilization format — and so that creates a factor of secrecy. People just don’t want to talk about this, because it doesn’t fit into their idea of reality, and yet this is a reality that is so abundantly expressing through them. You feel that love. I have met kundalini people who have been placed into the psych ward because they are having such tremendous levels of ecstasy that their friends thought something was wrong and they felt they had to do an intervention. That person who is actually coming straight into enlightenment goes through this very challenging process. For me, having worked in the medical field, there was no way I would go to an M.D. about any of my symptoms. I knew what my intake chart would look like. No, no, no! Not going to go there! (laughs) How do people know that this is the next step for them in their spiritual evolution? Chrism: What will typically occur is people

will begin to have Chrism come into their dreams, or they will hear a voice saying, “Go to The Edge magazine. Turn to page 19. Read the article by Chrism on the Sacred Feminine.” They receive instruction from the kundalini Divine within them to pursue this. That is the ideal person, and this happens quite a bit. People receive instructions in their dreams or in either a vision or   see

where the person is hearing Divine instruction. I need to really be clear about Divine instruction. It’s not Divine instruction if it is coming from a spirit or an entity or a ghost of a person who has passed. That is not Divine instruction. Divine instruction comes from a source that is much, much further beyond than your typical close astral integrated related spiritual consciousness. Divine Consciousness is almost impossible to describe, because it doesn’t adhere to the five senses of the limited consciousness. When Divine Consciousness comes, it gives you very specific instructions, such as to go to a certain place. I’ve had people come to seminars because the Divine Consciousness told them to go to a certain magazine, and to look at a certain advertisement, and on what page that advertisement is, and what advertisement it is talking about. I have received many people as a student or participant in a seminar in these ways. The ideal person is being given Divine instruction to do this work. Is what you provide a spiritual path itself? Chrism: Absolutely! It is the kind of spiritual

path that will walk you as much as you walk it. Typically, you get phenomenon. It’s not hard to get phenomenon with kundalini awakening. The phenomenon is part of the deal, and that is also part of the fear, as well. All of a sudden, people are able to do things and foresee things that they had never been able to do or foresee before in their lives, and because there is no scientific explanation or physics-based explanation, they go into fear — and then, of course, the kundalini can amplify that fear. I try to put out as much information as possible. When you are investigating this path, you want to do it with your eyes wide open and look at all the different phenomena that can occur. It’s not just a slim possibility that you will have visions or telepathy or psychokinesis or clairaudience or clairvoyance or any of the exalted skill sets that come with kundalini. It is typically a fact that that is going to happen, or it is already happening to the individual. It goes along the lines of what the person’s karma is and what that force of the Divine within the individual wants to do with that ascended skill set. It’s not the case in which once you have telepathy, then you can just go and read everybody’s mind. It’s not that way at all. It is a very different set of rules when you have ascended skill sets. Do you think the fact that you’re present now during this work is a sign of the spiritual evolution of human consciousness at this time, that it is moving to a higher level? Chrism: Oh, yes! Kundalini is going to be

the next big huge wave that will sweep the


spiritually minded populations, because it is so powerful. People who are not even awakened or activated within it are claiming to have kundalini-based expressions and skill sets and understandings, because it is known to be the ultimate source of Divine communion and connection within an individual. For me to be able to come to the Twin Cities area — and any of the areas on this planet — and give the kundalini understanding and the wisdom and the message that the kundalini brings, first of all, it is a great honor; it’s a great work. As some of the organizations will put it, doing this great work is a great gift of love, not only for those who receive it, but for those who are also giving it. I’m not getting football stadiums full of people at my seminars. I’ll get 30 people, maybe a little less, maybe a little more, but those are the seeds. Those are the people who are passing this information into the population. As Christ was teaching with the mustard seed parable, where the soil is rich is where the plant will take root, and the soil is exceptionally rich in the Twin Cities area. Does everyone who comes to your seminar have their kundalini awakened? Chrism: No. Some people come to the

seminar and they awaken, right then and there, and the kundalini begins to prove to them that what I’m saying is the real deal. But other people need to just take in the information and begin to apply it to the experiences they have had in their lives — the spiritual experience, the dream state experiences — and work it in to how they have experienced life up to that point. What has been their karma? What had been the major junctions in their life and why? How have they responded? How have they handled those major evolutionary shifts in their life. That is where the kundalini itself will begin to blossom itself within them or gradually insert itself into their life through the information that they receive at the seminar.

Tell us about what can people expect at the upcoming seminar in July. Chrism: In July, the seminar is being done

on a restored prairie between Rochester and the Twin Cities. It is 100 acres of restored prairie with a natural creek flowing through it that has fish, that has beaver, that has the natural grasses that were present on the prairie for so many thousands of years, and the natural trees. Kundalini is a force of nature within the individual. The sacred feminine, or what in Sanskrit is known as Shakti kundalini, represents Mother Nature. When you are walking barefoot on that restored prairie, when you are receiving information that pertains to the natural energetic environment within the individual, and as you’re doing that within the natural energetic environment

that is outside of you, the convergence of these natural experiences can greatly induce or be very provocative towards kundalini activation or awakening within the person. The information mixes with the environment and the kundalini mixes with both and begins to manifest itself within an individual. But as we mentioned before, I certainly will not guarantee that everybody who comes to the seminar will awaken, but everybody who comes to the seminar will have the opportunity to awaken as they practice the protocols that are given and as they digest and process the information that is given. The seminar is 16 hours of information, eight hours a day, from 9 to 5, and I try to make myself as available as possible for people if they have private concerns. Some may want to continue on through the night, maybe around a campfire. The experience is a mixture of listening and taking in the information, taking notes, and actual practices that are designed to establish just the right soil within the individual kundalini to take root within them. Tell us a little bit about the documentary film, Kundalini, and how people can see it if they want to. Chrism: I had a student a few years ago,

Nitin Adsul, who came to me because he was experiencing kundalini symptoms and it was concerning. He is a father of two, a very responsible and very nice and kind individual. As we were Skyping, he said, “You know, what do you think I could do to give service into the population?” I said, “Well, you’re a filmmaker. Why don’t you make a film about the kundalini?” We discussed various ideas and he landed on doing a documentary. He did it very well and it’s won awards all over the world. Phase 2: OPENING TO THE FRAMEWORK WORKING WITH THE CALL SOUND/ECHO:   Now you are going to begin an alignment process within the framework, linking into the God Consciousness state of “the One.” You are already aligned to your heart cells through the call sound/ echo from the Sun’s rays.   Now open your awareness into where you find yourself and use the sound, EE STAH NAE. This begins to align you to the framework. Breathe, and let go. This is your call sound. Follow the echo of your own call sound. Use the sound as many times as you need, each time following the energetic echo created by your sound. The framework begins to align through your heart cells expanding them out dimensionally. Keep letting go through the space.

and let go. Keep letting go and breathing until the space is fully open (This means it is open and not opening further). Now bring the sound, EEE…, right into the   opening where you find yourself. Keep using the sound, EEE… birthing the core. The core may fill with light; it may be large or very small, trust your process. Just be with your experience until it feels complete for now. Note: Use the above process fully, continuing to align and develop the metamorphosis of your heart cells. Your central core within your heart will build each time you do the entire process. Your alignment to your framework will unfold.

Phase 1: OPENING TO THE SUN’S REFLECTIVE RAYS: Remember: You will always use the Sun’s reflective rays of light as a catalyst for each building process within your heart cells.   Hold your heart with both palms of your hands and connect (this is your full chest area). Bring your awareness into the heart, and breathe into your heart, like placing a soft wind into your heart.   Watch the sun rise or open to the light of the sun by sitting in direct sunlight. As you receive the warmth of the sun into heart, breathe into the cells of your heart. Open to the brilliance of the sunlight. Claim the brilliance within the sunlight (at this moment the cells of your heart will respond to the energetic mirror held within the sunlight).   Open to the echo, the call held within the Sun’s rays. You do this by using this sound, ANFAE. This sound begins to bring the call/echo into your heart cells. Use the sound as many times

Beware the ‘I am God’ trap for others to shine, not just you. Being yourself, trusting yourself, and overcoming the judgments of others is an essential part of the spiritual path, but it only frees us to set foot upon it; it isn’t the goal. The goal is the top of the hill, the crucifixion, where we let go of it all, where the ego says, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”

The Mystical Christ

by Michael Maciel This warning is for all of us. It is a general principle that governs everyone who sets foot on the spiritual path. In fact, the farther along on the Path one travels, the more important the warning becomes. For ages, mystics and priests alike, have referred to the Path as the Razor’s Edge, a reference to the sharp ridge of a mountain that leads to its summit. One misstep in either direction can plummet you to your doom.   It’s a metaphor for holding the tension of the opposites. On the one hand, we can say, “I am God,” and on the other, “I am human,” with all the frailties and sinfulness that that implies — the sacred and profane wrapped up in one package.   No one likes to be condemned or to feel like there’s something wrong with them. The slightest accusation of that will make anyone defensive, because deep down we all know that we are God.   But here’s the truth, perhaps one of the greatest truths ever given in sacred scriptures throughout all lands and times — a truth that everyone who has ever approached the summit of the mountain of spiritual attainment knows most intimately: Freedom from condemnation comes through being utterly condemned.   Fundamentalists, the really thoughtful ones (and believe me, there are some) take great offense at the New Age statement, “We are all God.” They hold one side of the tension of the opposites. They know instinctively that unless both sides of that tension are held faithfully, the Razor’s Edge will take you down.   New Age fundamentalists (and believe me, there are some) are just as adamant in their faithfulness to the other side of the equation. They refuse to be called “sinners.” They refuse to be called anything but “Sons and Daughters of God.” They say,

The Middle Path

“I am perfect just as I am.” But those with mystical training see themselves as both. They know that either side of the equation, taken alone, spells disaster. Like the Hermit in the Tarot, they stand on the summit, but they keep their head bowed. It’s the light they hold that is the truly holy thing, not themselves. And the Magician, though he stands proudly erect, knows from whence his power comes. It comes from above, not from himself. He holds the symbol of his power over his head, knowing himself to be the channel, not the source.   These two poles of the tension of the opposites stand like pillars at the entrance to the Holy Temple, the temple of initiation. Unless candidates can demonstrate that they can pass between them, without leaning on either one, they will not be allowed to enter. “Being God” is tricky business. Lots of people have tried it and failed. They slip into megalomania and start proclaiming themselves avatars. They make people chant their names and throw flowers at their feet. Ironically, being God has nothing to do with being yourself. This is the whole message of the Crucifixion: “He who loses his life will find it.” This doesn’t mean you have to die in order to know God. Neither does it mean that your ego has to die. It simply means that you have to be able to put your ego aside when the situation calls for it. You have to be able to create a space

The name “Jesus Christ” is a mystical symbol — an equation: “Jesus” is our human identity; “Christ” is our divinity. ”Jesus” is nailed to the Cross of Matter. It is “Christ” who rises from the sleep of death, infusing the body with life. This is the Word made flesh, the union of the opposites of Spirit and Matter. The spiritual path is for rebels only. No one is celebrated for leaving the path of others. It is the flight of the alone to the alone. In the end, all of our rebelliousness comes to a laser point of intensity, that point where we finally rid ourselves of the tyranny of “me-ness.” Therefore, it is never wise to proclaim, “I am God.” Never. We can know it, but we never proclaim it, because the second we do, we are at great risk. This is the “tricky” part I alluded to earlier. It is a warning to us all. And when I say “us,” I mean everyone who ever has or ever will set foot on the spiritual path.   “Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Personal GPS and coincidences by Sofia Karin Axelsson There are coincidences that forever change our lives. Some say these coincidences are fated. Others say these events are purely an act of chance. But what if there is something in between? What if we ourselves, on an unconscious level, are part of orchestrating these coincidences because we need them? According to Dr. Bernard Beitman, there are powers in play when meaningful connections are made that are perfectly possible to observe, but that cannot be explained either by religious overtones, or by being the result of chance. In his book Connecting with Coincidence: The New Science for Using Synchronicity and Serendipity 18

in Your Life, Dr. Beitman explores the role of coincidences in our lives, and how understanding them can help us find what we need. Dr. Beitman says it is perfectly possible to observe coincidences in a scientific manner. But to do this we have to move beyond the extremes of seeing them as the result of chance, or as the result of higher powers at work. I met my present husband Michael on a bus in Peru, going from Cuzco to Puno. This meeting would result in me moving to another continent, change my work and much else. It was the last week of a much-needed vacation. Michael was on a half-year journey through South America. Michael came running last minute before the bus left and sat down beside me for the five-hour bus ride. We talked all

the way. There was no question we liked each other, but we parted ways, and that could have been the end of it. For some days I could not stop thinking about the man on the bus. I traveled over to Copacabana in Bolivia, to visit the holy islands of Lake Titicaca. The day I arrived in Copacabana, Michael came walking down the main street, sun in his face, having gone hiking the whole day. He was coming back to Copacabana on that particular street, just as I stood looking at people passing by. I quickly invited him to join me for dinner. During dinner we found out more about each other. It was like holding up a favorable, funny house mirror: somewhat distorted, but surprisingly familiar. Spiritual interests, outlook on life, favorite authors all lined up as conversation went on. According to Dr. Beitman, there are several ways to increase meaningful coincidences in our lives: by keeping our minds open to them, and by doing something out of our ordinary routine. Our personal wills also make a big difference. He says our wants and needs help create coincidences, but that our real needs are not something of which we are always conscious. Dr. Beitman has presented the hypothesis that all people have an inborn, brainrelated Global Positioning System that draws us towards situations and people that we are looking for. Observing how our personal, human GPS creates coincidences in our lives can greatly enhance our understanding of how we are part of making things unfold. “It is possible that many people really do know they will meet, but don’t consciously know that they know,” Dr. Beitman says. Regardless how much we enhance our chances for coincidence, and use our inherent ability to find what we need, there is also one more vital element: we have to grab the chance. There was a chance of a lifetime that Michael and I would sit beside each other on that bus from Cuzco to Puno. Somewhat overwhelmed, I did not grab that opportunity. Our human GPS was well functioning however, and drew us together once again, in another country, some days later. That time I did not let opportunity slip. Perhaps it was neither chance nor fate that created the coincidence of Michael and I meeting. It could have been something inherited in us, a yet unexplained but totally natural inner guidance that made us seek out the right place and the right time. When it comes to understanding meaningful connections of coincidence, we are but at the frontier of a new science. THE GAME CHANGERS by Keri Mangis “I like the idea of free college tuition,” argued my practicalminded, dollars-and-cents husband, “but I don’t think it’s possible.” “Of course you don’t. You’re only looking at ‘what is.’ As long as we create from ‘what is,’ we will never break into ‘what’s possible,’” said I, his idealistic wife. The political discussion around my house is like morning oatmeal: hot, quick and regular. Most often, my husband and I tread common ground. But there are times, like this one, where we find ourselves in dispute, challenging each other to not just spout our positions, but to uncover their origins: i.e., don’t just tell me what you believe, explain why. I can explain the roots of my political beliefs: to have a harmonious heart, what I stand for spiritually I must also stand for politically, socially, culturally and any other “ly.” So in life, as in yoga, I stretch higher than I think possible, whether I’m writing, teaching, voting or creating anew. Creativity is food for the soul; stifled creativity stifles the soul. We are all creators and we must create. But there are two distinct ways to approach it. First, we can employ careful observation of the world, note what has succeeded in the past, and then mix, match, and innovate from left-behind seed ideas or successful manifestations — a time-tested recipe, a successful business plan, a landmark building. This creator is clever, inspiring and innovative. But they remain limited inside a paradigm of rules, structure, history, and boundaries — not disrupting, not risking mistakes, making room for only success. But while they might make money, they don’t leave a lasting footprint: after all, how many more varieties of social media do we need? The second kind of creator seeks within and beyond, dreaming and imagining beyond limits and boundaries. They might not have the answer for “how, when, and how   see Changers on p. 22 20

The Artist’s Well Spirit Leaves

by Janet Michele Red Feather Many believe having material possessions or finding true love brings lasting happiness. I was raised in the acquisitive culture and instilled with the Prince Charming myth. I neither judge the wealthy nor dismiss romance. It just seems there are two forces that are far more joy-inducing: creativity and intuition. Each infuses the other. Creativity is an infinite well: the more I draw from it, the more it yields. The night my first husband moved out of our cantilevered home in Glen Park, Calif., I felt a kind of numb shock. Love had long since left, following his confession of nine infidelities within 11 years. It wasn’t loss I felt per se. Some voice deep within urged me to discover who I was outside of coupledom. Jamie and his 186 IQ had a penchant for gourmet cooking, Mandelbrot sets, progressive jazz, and Salvador Dali that had been alluring. Yet, I had voluntarily surrendered all that I was in order to satisfy and impress him. I played music and reflected upon the demise of the marriage. I filled a water glass and set out brushes, paper and watercolors. After pausing fleetingly to assess my emotional landscape, I saturated the brush and dropped water onto porous, textured paper. Splashes of color, the subtle tints of my thoughts, spread out like brooding, prodigious clouds. Shapes formed and gave rise to others. I stopped precisely on the cusp of that defining moment when, were I to go one brushstroke further, the whole composition would turn muddy. I left a painting at the height of its clarity and brilliance — a kind of

abstinence game of the heart. The long, lonely night stretched out like a desert of dunes and flats. I painted one picture, then another, and another. I braced them against the wall to dry and thereafter stacked them. The scenic display before me and the pile to the left grew exponentially. What was I doing? I could not, and did not, wish to stop. On a deep, intuitive level, I knew I would die psychically if I did not continue. Releasing the happily-ever-after myth brought the realization that intuition fuels creativity. The watercolors were luminous Rorschachs of my soul’s journey back to itself. I followed my intuitive directive to immerse myself in the creative process. This proved so much more elevating and expressive that crying my eyes out over not having been first in someone’s heart. It was during a second disastrous marriage to a portly powwow dancer from Nebraska that I would learn that the inverse of the equation bodes true: Creativity fuels intuition. Quantum leap back to a homely apartment in Chandler, Ariz. I had left my position as attorney and sole supporter of our household and intuitively purchased easel, canvases, brushes and acrylics. One day, while Mr. D. was safely away, off apprenticing in the electrical trade, I painted a portrait of an eagle atop a thick branch against a beautiful cerulean sky. Not long after that, Mr. D. informed me, “The Spirits told me I should live alone.” I packed all my things and went to Florida to stay with my parents. Thereafter, I was invited to visit Cedric Red Feather in Memphis, Tenn., and thus began the acceleration of my spiritual journey.

Everything that happened in the two months after we got together was magic: sweatlodges, sundances, pipe ceremonies, and powwows. It was a journey into the center of spiritual culture, and into the heart of who I truly am inside. Although this would inevitably lead to my third failed attempt at marriage, Cedric and I remain the best of friends. He has dreams and visions, and a number of us try to carry them out. He has helped me realize my true purpose in life — to sing the Sacred Songs. So in the end, intuition and creativity live within me moment by moment, helping me lead a balanced life of deep spiritual, poetic and artistic beauty. I’m working on my second book and singing in Lakota, Mandan and Hidatsa in ceremonies. Do I have inner creative genius? by Theresa Nutt I am surprised almost every week while having a conversation that starts with something like, “I am not creative.” Or, “I thought I would be an artist, but I turned out to be an energy healer.” Too many people assume that because they are not artists, musicians, performers, writers or other obvious forms of creative expression, somehow they were overlooked when creativity was dished out. I love the following quote by Albert Einstein because it sums up my philosophy about creativity: “Everyone is a genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will spend its whole life believing it is stupid.” You are a creative genius

With that in mind, I believe everyone has a healthy dose of inner creative genius. And the expression of that creative genius can come in a myriad of forms, such as how you advocate for a cause you believe in, how you parent, how you approach your life, how you cook, how you entertain, and as many more “how you do” statements as you can imagine. Creativity comes from being fully aligned with our most unique, authentic nature and expressing that unique nature in our daily lives. Too many of us have learned how to appear to be more of what others see as “good enough” or “worthy enough,” and as a result we disconnect from or downplay the parts of ourselves that are unique to us. Once you learn how to truly stay tuned into your deepest inner knowing and what you are here to express in this lifetime, everything you do will come from your inner creative genius. What your creative genius needs to thrive:

  Dedicate a space in your heart that nurtures and supports this aspect of your nature. I have a free audio available on my website that helps people create a sacred place in their hearts to

house this important aspect of their nature. Understand how to support your creativity.   Creativity is a cycle like the in and out breath. In this case, the in breath looks like percolation, daydreaming, down time, doodling, imagining, and seemingly nothing going on in the physical world. The out breath of creativity is the activity that makes your creation come to life. Constant focus on the activity that makes your creation come to life will squelch your creativity. Value your creative genius as much as your   sense of responsibility and ability to produce in your daily life. Manage the limiting beliefs that keep you   disconnected from your inner creative genius. I call these beliefs creativity squashers, and they sound like any of the following: “I am not good enough to do ___. I don’t compare to __ so I shouldn’t do this at all. I don’t deserve to spend my time doing __ because there are other things I should be doing.” Whatever unsupportive thoughts keep you from creating in the way that feels natural to you is a creativity squasher for you. All of these thoughts are supposedly keeping you safe, but in reality, they are only keeping you small. Create and protect space in your life for   your inner creative genius. Create a physical space in your home that is dedicated to your creativity. Block time on your calendar every week for creative expression and protect that time. Spend time each week either expressing creatively in some way or noticing how you are already engaging your inner creative genius in parts of your daily life. I trust that you are now very aware of your inner creative genius and have some tools for engaging more deeply with confidence in your unique expression of creativity. much,” but they trust that the bridge they envision will manifest under their feet as they step forward. This person reaches past “hard truths” and “well-that’s-just-lifes” to spin a web never before envisioned. When Martin Luther King Jr. announced, “I have a dream,” he tapped this level of creativity. Like Charlie in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, these innovators are not content to rise to the highest floor, they break out of the glass ceiling. This kind of creator is courageous (some say naïve), refreshing (exasperating), and risk-taking (foolish). Like the inventors of the wheel, electricity and flight, this creator can change the world. It was 12 years ago, 2004, when the movie What the Bleep do We Know!? wove its way through spiritual, and even secular, communities. This was followed by the book and movie The Secret in 2006. The encouragement from these works to “create our own reality” had my spiritual circles setting up movie nights and making vision boards, daring ourselves to name what it was we most wanted. But these movies also drew criticism for their materialistic focus — after all, can our deepest desires be snipped from magazines and glued onto tagboard? Whether this was the original intent or not (and I think not) the concepts these movies presented were unfortunately understood and employed within the context of limited creativity. Limited creativity: how many more mix-and-match yoga classes can we stand? How many more twists on the same tired mantras? As humans evolve and transform, we require fresh dreams and unlimited creativity to carve our future. We need to push against the invisible bubble and ask “what about” and “have you considered?” The soul gratification we seek does not lie in piecemeal behind us; it waits inside and ahead of us. Anything is possible if we believe in it; nothing is possible if we don’t. To take us there, we need game changers, not merely game players. Now, about free college tuition. While I cannot provide a final answer, I know this much: not knowing “how” is not reason enough to throw out the idea. the everyday genius by Colleen Mauro Our famous artists, writers, scientists and entrepreneurs are often seen as rare and special beings endowed with gifts and talents that most of us lack. In doing research for my book, Spiritual Telepathy: Ancient Techniques to Access the Wisdom of Your Soul, I discovered that many of our most celebrated creative thinkers — the people we call geniuses or visionaries — credit their greatest achievements to their contact with the soul. Many spoke of the soul as a portal to a universal source of inspiration and beauty. Once connected to this source, ideas and images simply flowed into their brains. We see the fruits of this experience all around us, from our most beautiful works of art to the scientific breakthroughs and inventions that have revolutionized our world. Many of our most renowned artists, writers, scientists and business leaders have left a record of this experience. In the late 1800s, Arthur Abell, an American violinist living in Europe, interviewed Puccini, Brahms, Strauss, Wagner and other well-known composers about the source of their creative genius. As you’ll see below, their experiences are remarkably consistent. Each spoke of the soul as the portal to a universal source of inspiration. Once they were connected to this source, ideas and images simply flowed into their brains. As Puccini explained to Abell, “The great secret of all creative geniuses is that they possess the power to appropriate the beauty, the wealth, the grandeur, and the sublimity within their own souls, which are a part of the Omnipotence, and to communicate those riches to others. The conscious, purposeful appropriation of one’s own soul force is the supreme secret.” Puccini experienced inspiration as a divine force, a “vibration [that passes] from the soul-center, into my consciousness, where the inspired ideas are born.” German composer Richard Wagner, best known for his set of four operas called the Ring, also spoke of inspiration as the ability to become one with the “universal currents of Divine thought [that are] vibrating everywhere.” According to Wagner, “This universal vibrating energy binds the soul of man…to the Supreme Force of the universe, of which we are all a part.” Wagner, who also spoke of “appropriating” this force when composing his famous operas, described his creative process to Abell: “I see in my mind’s eye definite visions of the heroes and heroines of my music dramas. I have clear mental pictures of them before

they take form in my scores, and while I am holding fast to those mental images, the music…the whole musical structure, occurs to me.” Richard Strauss also spoke of inspiration as coming from a higher self: “In my most inspired moods, I have definite compelling visions, involving a higher selfhood. I feel at such moments that I am tapping the source of infinite and eternal energy from which you and I and all things proceed.” Strauss, who called his ability to register inspired ideas a “divine gift,” described a similar experience while writing one of his operas: “The ideas were flowing in upon me — the motives, themes, structure, melodies…in fact the entire musical measure by measure…. I was definitely conscious of being aided by a more than earthly power.” Johannes Brahms called his method of composing music “communicating with the infinite.” Composing, Brahms said, “cannot be done by will power working through the conscious mind…. It can only be accomplished by the soul-powers within.” He described inspiration as “a condition where the conscious mind is in temporary abeyance and the superconscious is in control, for it is through the superconscious mind, which is part of Omnipotence, that the inspiration comes.” Writers and visual artists have also reported this experience. As Ralph Waldo Emerson explained in his 1844 essay The Poet, “It is a secret which every intellectual man quickly learns, that beyond the energy of his possessed and conscious intellect, he is capable of a new energy…a great public power on which he can draw…by unlocking his human doors…he is caught up in the life of the Universe.” Leonardo da Vinci stated that “The painter’s mind is a copy of the Divine Mind,” and “the painter has the   see

creativity & intuition by Alley Brook Brilliance and intuition come from thoughts and energies beyond that which we normally access during our daily life. Some fortunate people, including great artisans, inventors, healers, etc, connect to something beyond the norm. But we all know when we see/hear brilliance, including intuitive moments. Once in a while, you might access something beyond your small minded ego-self, transposing you into deeper understandings, written words, art and creativity or concepts. Doing something creative while in this state can self-actualize beyond mediocrity, reminding us of something greater while we are deeply moved. How can we tap into brilliant moments where inspired thoughts and ideas come from? We hear stories of people finding their inspirations from their dreams. You might be inspired during relaxing daydreams, or possibly a thought flows through you while you are in a state of deep concentration. These moments can create a brain shift, allowing consciousness to flow beyond your intellectual mind, entering into a moment of expansion. This is the state in which you access the brilliance of your intuitive and creative potential. I help unblock others using a technique I call Spiritual Purification, which connects us to our multidimensional reality. The Beings of Light, including Ascended Masters and Angels

of Light, orchestrate each session. That is how and where we can access our brilliance, which is our divine Potential. This awakens one’s innate spiritual talents. Allow yourself to feel the wind on your skin while listening to the many sounds around you. Feel your body, the way you move and breathe. Deeply inhale the fragrance of nature around you. Continue relaxing more deeply as you walk. Stop when inspired, and appreciate colors, fragrance and shapes while more deeply noticing the natural world. This will help you to expand your conscious self. Allow your thoughts to flow. Truth be told, I wasn’t sure I would ever share this. It seemed like it was too much. But it feels like it was intended to be shared. Now is that time. Today is Wednesday, May 4, almost two weeks after Prince died. I wrote it exactly as it is shared. That is how it came through to me.

As more information in the details surrounding the death of Prince are starting to be shared with the public, I feel this is time to share this written channeled conversation that I conducted with him. It was late and I felt like keeping the conversation going with him was important. He wanted to share. He wanted to talk. When he wants to talk, we talk, because he isn’t always this chatty or forthcoming with details. 24

Purple Peace — Peace, Love and Prince channeled on Saturday, April 30 I am talking to my new friend. I have only known him in the afterlife. We have felt it so deeply, this death. Did you know? I ask. “No — I had no idea,” Prince says. Was it expected? To which he responds, “We all die. I am at peace with that.” Not afraid of death at all. Just surprised it came when it did. “Truth is, I am a little pissed about it. I know there are some friends that are having a real hard time and I don’t want them to feel bad or blame themselves. It ain’t nobody’s fault.” I wish I could have played my piano more, he says…(not sure, he may have been playing earlier in the day before he died). I hesitate to intrude at this point. I know it is not comfortable for you, I say. Tell me a little about your death so that we can move forward. What can you share with us?  “Well, you know I was in the elevator. I fell, you know that you felt it. I did hit my head there. I just wanted to play some music and I couldn’t do it. It wasn’t like a tortuous thing. Not over-dramatic. I just walked into the ‘vator and kinda just fell. I could feel it but I wasn’t aware really what was happening. “Yes, I was sick. Not the way you think. And I had medicine. I had to get different types because it wasn’t working well. I had to switch medicine. You know what happened. You know it ain’t pretty.”

What were you doing before you went into the elevator? “Writing music, working on music. I was downstairs in the studio.” (Or wanting to go down to the studio? This part is hard to recount — not sure if his memory is missing parts or if I am not hearing it fully). “Listening to old albums, to music, inspires me. I thought it would help me feel a little better. I felt like I was going crazy, not in a good way. It’s like my body was attacking me or something. I think I was (crabby), too.” (My word is crabby, his might be something else — and he’s sorry for that.) He says, “For at least a few weeks I was crabby with people. It was hard to sleep. So uncomfortable, and when I usually don’t sleep I work. So it’s not wasted time. I was getting frustrated at the waste of time, at how long it was taking to get better. Yes, I was really lightheaded — I could feel a little spinny every now and then and that was the part that was hard for me.” I ask about the lightheadedness. “Yeah, it throws you off and makes it hard to be in reality, here.” Then he switches the topic. “There are two women specifically that mean a lot to me, and they will know who they are. I am most regretful of what I didn’t tell them.” About what? I ask. “You know, just being able to share with them, open up and tell them what was really going on. How I was feeling. But I didn’t want to admit it to myself. People get sick all the time and they get better. So why should I be any different. It shouldn’t have happened the way it did.” Are you glad that you were at Paisley Park? “It would have been better at the piano — that would have been cooler. But yeah, it’s okay that I was there. I wouldn’t have wanted to be found in a hotel room or something cliché like that. Being in Minnesota also makes it better in a way, you know. There is so much love here. And people, they will understand eventually, I think.” What do you think of the memorials at Paisley Park and First Avenue? 

Tributes at Paisley Park “It’s nice. You know I think people grieve in different ways. I really liked the block party. That was pretty cool. Wish I could have been there and playing alive. (He refers to being on the top of First Avenue on the roof-like part and rocking out.) I visit Paisley Park, and it feels like a wake, honestly. I was disappointed that there wasn’t any music, I say. “Well, I think it’s because, you know, it’s the place my body was found and there is kind of that ring/energy (aura might be a better word) of grief there right now. It will change though. Over time it will heal. It’s Minnesota. When the summer comes, people will get on with their lives. I hope.  “More parties, though — that would be good. Universe in his mind and hands…. Where the spirit does not work with the hand, there is no art.” Einstein’s famous equation E = mc2 came in a moment of inspiration when, in his words, “a storm broke loose in my mind and with it came the answers.” Einstein, a friend later said, had “tapped into God’s thoughts and tuned into the master plan for the universe.” After his death, pathologists dissected Einstein’s brain, looking for anomalies that would explain the source of his genius. But Einstein — who wrote, “There comes a time when the mind takes a higher plane of knowledge…. All great discoveries have involved such a leap” and “The mystical…is the source of all true art and science” — made it clear that his inspiration came from a higher source. It’s not just the “special” people — our famous artists, writers and scientists — who have the ability to contact the subtle worlds. With a daily practice called creative meditation, it is possible for each of us to contact the soul and tap that universal flow of wisdom and knowledge. Imagine the inspired writing, the beautiful works of art and the groundbreaking inventions, we will bring to the world as the soul in each of us unfolds. When you are ready, use your creative imagination to lift your consciousness to a focal point outside and above your head. See this as your rational mind, now still and receptive. Project a line of light upwards to the soul center, six inches above your head. See it as a brilliant sun, a radiant source of energy. Visualize this line of light reaching even higher, toward the higher, or intuitive, mind. Take a moment to hold this lighted alignment. Pause for a moment as you experience the light and energy of your soul. Then, holding the mind steady in the light, listen for the subtle voice of your soul. Make note of any information you receive. To end your meditation, silently sound the Om and visualize a pure white light pouring down from your soul, illuminating your mind, calming your emotions, and invigorating your physical body. The surprising truth about creativity by Nick Seneca Jankel

Everyone is fascinated by the unique power creativity has to improve our lives (and the world with it). We’re not just talking about creativity in terms of art, crafts and the creative industries. We are talking about those everyday acts of creativity that drive a life less ordinary: the new way to respond to our lover so we avoid a fight; a fresh approach to being a leader that inspires the workforce to embrace a new future; a way to play with our kids so that they feel safer. Creativity, at all levels, is a fundamental driver of evolution, growth, learning and, therefore, thriving. You, me, and everyone around us has creativity written into their DNA. It is a large part of what makes us human. Creativity is a unique characteristic of living things. No matter how powerful a computer, it cannot be creative. It can look as if it’s being creative, yet every outcome is predictable, driven by a set of algorithms (equations that generate solutions based on a predetermined set of mathematical relationships). No breakthroughs can emerge from linear machines. However, even the youngest child and the simplest cellular organism can create breakthroughs — unpredictable, often non-linear solutions — that simply didn’t exist before. While computational theories can account for basic cognition, they cannot account for human creativity. This is what the field of Breakthrough Biodynamics is focused on. Living organisms are the creative products of our own creativity. We are auto-poetic. Powered

by biological brilliance, life is continuously creating more life from a bunch of seemingly inert chemical building blocks. As we evolve, both biologically and culturally, we open up more and more fields of possibility that were not there before. The result has been everything from opposable thumbs to Shakespeare’s plays. Along the way, nations, political systems, technologies, and enterprises have all been created by our imaginations. The ruling explanation for what creativity is is two (or more) previously unconnected ideas that are recombined together into something new. Yes, this does tend to happen. But it is not the key to creativity. Something way more fundamental has to happen first. In a landmark study in the last couple of years, rappers (MCs) were put into MRI scanners while performing. First, they sang lyrics they had written in advance. Then they were asked to improvise in the moment, in the flow. The difference between their brains in these two states was enormous. With the scripted lyrics,

areas of the pre-frontal cortex associated with control, decisions, and judgment lit up. But when the MCs were freestyling, the areas of control, willpower, and attention were all less active. In the moments they gave up being conventionally “smart,” they were most creative! Similar results have been found with jazz musicians when they improvise, too. People given psychedelics show a muted activity in their brain’s control center. The deeper the inhibition of their prefrontal cortex, the more intense their imagination! innovation

I spent years thinking that my job as an innovation consultant — paid to help organizations innovate and teams become more creative — was to help people have ideas. I thought the same as a transformational coach and wisdom teacher working with social workers, celebrities, students and parents. Yet, after hundreds of projects with some of the best companies in the world (and having taught and coached thousands of people), I began to realize something quite revolutionary. Creativity is not simply about having new ideas. In fact, the most important prerequisite for enjoying a breakthrough is letting go of the old. It’s what we are prepared to give up that counts. This is quite a challenge given that we rely on our existing assumptions, habits and emotional patterns to survive life; and succeed in the system. There is never a blank canvas to create with. No artist, entrepreneur, leader or parent starts with one. Instead, we all start with notions about what a great company does, how good leaders act and what a great love life should be like. We engage every problem in life with an idea of what the “right” way to solve it is; habits are conditioned over a lifetime about how to act around them. These old ideas and habits have been burnished into our nervous system over a lifetime of constant conditioning and consolidation of our neurons. So, when faced with an issue or conflict, we fall back on the familiar to deal with it.

The canvases of our lives, societies and businesses are chock full of imagery and there is little space to create or room to innovate. Until we are ready to let go of these assumptions and habits, we simply cannot have a breakthrough. It is a literal impossibility. This is why so many large companies fail to spot massive opportunities for innovation, even though they have more consultants, agencies, MBAs on staff, investment capital and resources than the tiny companies that challenge them. It is also why a few, like Kodak or Blackberry, have gone down, even when the everyone else can see the writing on the wall. The same attachment to old habits and assumptions locks us into repeated patterns that stop us having consistently awesome relationships. If we always respond to our friends and colleagues in the same way, there is no opportunity for breakthrough. Release the old

No matter how much effort we expend, creativity cannot occur until we release the old, leaving room for the new to emerge. Very few people understand this secret. In fact, most people in positions of authority want people — whether employees, school kids, college students or workers — to keep doing things exactly as they have been told. The results are predictable. Little innovation. Zero breakthroughs. Little wonder that conventional governments and hierarchal organizations find it so hard to create. The same can be said for those of us taught how to follow the rules by our parents, teachers and leaders. Culture, and the group-think that pervades in it, stops people from letting go of the old. And we have to question the dominant way of doing things, often ruffling feathers, if we want to truly create. Picasso broke through because he questioned everything about how to represent truth in art. Einstein questioned Newtonian laws. Steve Jobs questioned the role of a personal computer (and what it could look and feel like as a tool for creativity). Gandhi

questioned the conventions of how to create a revolution. Broke the rules

Famously innovative figures like these, that we so like to revere years after their breakthroughs, were laughed at, ignored and criticized for years precisely because they broke the rules and didn’t listen to “no, we don’t do it like that ’round here” for an answer. Every time friends of loved ones act predictably, and expect us to do the same, they crush our creativity. Yet, it is we who have let them! You can either be right about your assumptions or you can be consistently creative. Never both. The tragedy of many people’s lives is that the organizations they work in, and the schools and colleges they study in, have been designed from scratch to reduce originality and promote a fixed way of being. What makes things even more challenging is that the habits and assumptions that stop us from questioning the ways things have always been can rarely be relinquished by simple cognitive choice. Many of our most fundamental habits and assumptions about how to deal with life / business / the market are anchored into our neurobiology by our emotions. As neurologist Antonio Damasio has shown, without emotions we cannot make decisions. Emotions lock in habits and assumptions that seem to be able to defend us against change, danger and uncertainty. As we go through life, we hardwire a specific neural response to familiar threats. The more intense the initial emotion was when we created a response, the deeper the programming and the harder it will be to change it. This is the primary obstacle to our creativity: the fear and stress that drives our habits and assumptions to keep on repeating. Fear shuts down our nervous system, foxing us into tunnel vision and tunnel memory. Yet, connection and courage open us up to new ideas and new experiences, while allowing us the freedom to let go.   see Creativity on p. 29

Like any work of art, they too deserve a fresh perspective every now and again. Are there areas of “negativity” that need some compassionate attention? Is there a sense of balance to your life, or does it seem “out of proportion” in any way? Do the colors seem correct, or is there a feeling of insincerity to the whole picture? Painting as spiritual practice Life lessons learned one brushstroke at a time by Christopher Palbicki During one of Ram Dass’ lectures on psychedelics back in the ’70s, he encountered a curious woman seated in the front row. In contrast to the usual types drawn to his popular talks — twentysomethings, dressed in white, long hair — this woman wore a little hat speckled with plastic cherries, a print dress, and black oxfords. And she was around 70 years old. No matter how far-out Ram Dass’ talk got, the woman kept nodding her head in agreement. Intrigued, Ram Dass pushed things into the realm of the truly mystical. Still, she hung in there, nodding quietly to herself as his stories got more and more bizarre. Afterwards, she thanked him for verifying her own beliefs about how the Universe worked. “How do you know? he asked. “What have you done in your life that has brought you into those kinds of experiences?” She leaned in close, “I crochet.” As this story aptly illustrates, spiritual truths often arrive wearing unexpected disguises. It’s wrong to assume that the only way to get “there” is by sitting in deep 28

meditation on a mountaintop. True, that method might work for you, but there are limitless ways to arrive at some of the deeper understandings about the nature of Life that don’t require walking traditional routes. Take crochet for example. Or in my case: painting. Begin In Darkness & Move Towards The Light

When painting, realism is best achieved by beginning in the darkest areas of a given subject first (the shadows) and then moving slowly towards the lightest areas, building dimension and shape one brushstroke at a time. The same basic idea applies in life. By learning to accept and embrace the darkest aspects of our own psyches, we gradually come to a deeper and more compassionate understanding of not only ourselves, but of our fellow beings as well. True Colors Arise With Time

After working in acrylics for several years now, I’ve discovered that the most accurate shade of any color arises only after it’s had enough time to dry. And even though acrylics dry very quickly, it still takes about 12 hours before their “true” colors can shine through. It’s the same with us. Uncovering the purest and most authentic “you” — whatever that is — takes time.

If you ever need to draw a straight line without the help of a ruler, you’ll get the best result by doing it quickly. The same applies to all geometric shapes. Over thinking it is the surest way to end up with something you don’t want. Whenever I over-analyze a decision, I’m either less apt to act, or more likely to make mistakes. Don’t get me wrong, the intellect is “an exquisite servant,” as Swami Vivekananda once said, “but it’s also a terrible master.” You can’t just “think” (intellectualize) your way through life; it takes “feeling” (intuitive wisdom) as well. That, and trust. The ways in which we arrive at spiritual truths are as varied as there are stars in the Milky Way. Believing that your particular practice is the only course worth taking is an all too common mistake of our clever egos. For me, the light of truth emanates from the tips of my paintbrushes. For writers it appears through language. Studies show that distance and space can also really help us break through. By consciously taking a break to play ball, go on a vacation or have a shower, we force our busy brain to stop focusing on a problem and let go of our old ideas long enough to allow new ones to emerge. There is a system of brain activity that shows up when the brain is at rest. It fades out whenever we start doing a task. This Default Mode Network (DMN) turns out to be more active at rest in people who have more spontaneous ideas. Resting, letting go, allows our body/mind to wander between ideas and connect up the dots, free from tension, habit and pressure. Early studies show that we can use the more focused, “smart” parts of our brain to direct our DMN to wander, carefree, in directions, which might come up with the ideas we are looking for. In other words, we can consciously promote the chances of creative serendipity without trying to control it. If we don’t embrace creativity in all areas, our quality of life soon suffers. The patterns we use to survive life often will create more problems than they solve because the old ways of acting, thinking, and feeling are no longer a fit for purpose. If we want creative breakthroughs, we have to engage in a process of letting go before we get to the fun part when we get to recombine ideas and enjoy the rush of breakthrough. That means surfacing and questioning our assumptions. Spotting and breaking our habits. And, above all, encountering and releasing our fears. This is why true creativity, in whatever area in life, is a whole mind and body thing. We need all our faculties aligned if we want to be creative, as opposed to just talking about being creative. This is a way of life, not a title at work. It is a way of engaging with the problems we want to solve and feeling our way, thinking our way and acting our way to solve them with a creative breakthrough. 7 Steps to Boost Your Creativity

  Remember you are creative in your DNA — Pause for a moment and feel, right now, the hundreds of trillions of cells that make up your body/mind. Each one is alive and auto-poetic. Each is pulsating with creativity because it can self-create. Which means you are creative in your essence, no matter what your old art teacher, uncle, or boss said to you. Every chromosome, cell membrane, organ, and neuron within you is fundamentally creative. You can break through anything you choose to. Bring all your attention to a problem you   want to break through — Although we want to let go of old ideas and habits, first we must bring a challenge and issue into our awareness, focusing our brain and body on it. It can be a challenge in our relationships, in our career, in our marketplace, in society. Anything at all is raw material for a problem. As we bring it to our attention, we signal to our brain and body that we are ready to create. Feel the problem all over; don’t just think   it — We are fully embodied minds. The science

of embodied cognition is showing us that we think with our whole body, not just our brain. The insula cortex is able to sense our body’s intelligence and feed it into the emotional parts of the brain. Elite athletes and soldiers have highly developed insulas because they are so highly tuned to their bodily senses. The more we feel the problem, as opposed to just think about it, the more we recruit more parts of our emotionallyguided nervous system for a breakthrough. Notice the habitual ways you have of   dealing with this problem or ones like it — How do you usually react? What behaviors do you show? What thoughts do you have about the situation or any of the people in it? What do you assume about those involved? What are you being right about? What feelings do you usually have? Are any of them stressful, tense or fearful? Find your still point to step out of your   comfort zone — Before you can let go of all those old habits, assumptions and ideas it helps to reconnect your heart to something bigger than your worries and fears. What inspires you most about the creative spirit? Can you use mindfulness or meditation to find a still point, where you can step out of your comfort zone? How can you unblock any connections you have to the universe you are intrinsically part of? Let go of anything that holds you in the   past — You can break through anything, IF (and it’s a big if) you are prepared to get out of the way of yourself by jettisoning each and every assumption that is holding you back. Take a break, have a bath, just starting writing. Whatever it takes to let go. Let the Ah Ha! Out — Allow a fresh insight   or idea to emerge from within. Allow it to come into your heart and mind without censorship, cynicism or self-criticism. Creativity is at its peak when we get out of the way of ourselves. When we do things in a way that doesn’t feel like there is an “I” doing them — an I that is a small, fearful Tiny Me (or ego) — we allow breakthroughs to come through us. We become “entangled” with the thing we are creating. We are the subject, object and verb all at once. We are not merely the dancer; we are the dance and the dancing too. We are not just the scientist; we are the science, as well. We are not just the lover; we are the loving and the lovemaking too. Ideas are not simply “ours.” They come through us. We co-create them with the universe we are part of. “Being suddenly hit years later with the ‘creative bug’ is just a wee voice telling you ‘I’d like my crayon box back, please.’ ” – Hugh MacLeod So much of creativity is unlearning the barriers that hold you back so you can once again hear and follow inner guidance. You have it. I have it. Why is it often so hard to listen to? MacLeod clarifies that whatever is uninspiring often stifles our creativity. For me it is the “shoulds” of life. Pay attention to what shuts you down. By recognizing the hold-backs, you’ll have the power to begin letting them go.

So much of art is about understanding the self. As you’re figuring out what holds you back, also pay attention to what makes you happy. At your core, joy is what you are. Often it’s buried under lists, obligations, and assumptions we’ve made about life and ourselves. Find what makes you smile! Ask, what is my crayon box? Don’t doubt, just do. When you’re a kid you create. You stick stickers, scrawl markers and spill creative energy into whatever is before you. You didn’t overly judge. You just moved from one step to the next. This is the mindset we need to reclaim. And sometimes you just have to start. Dedicate 10 minutes a day. You can accomplish a lot in that time! Whether it’s journaling, doodling, or other, just do. Let this be a journey for you to begin understanding your own process. Don’t let false starts hold you back. Be real, not perfect. Sometimes we need to learn what doesn’t work in order to be led to what does.

You have the potential to make beautiful things. Yes, you. These anonymous words remind me to hear what my inner guidance is constantly trying to tell me, but that I’m often resistant to perceiving. MOVING INTO YOUR CREATIVITY: BECOMING LIMITLESS by Jeanne Henderson What does it look like to feel limitless and creative? How does it work? Becoming limitless can seem very nebulous. Through this article we will discuss how it works, how it feels and how it can be achieved. Most people following a spiritual path have come to believe that their thoughts create their reality. This is only part of the equation, and a person must move beyond this to create limitlessness. As a person starts to question what they have believed, the process of limitlessness begins. Unfortunately, nothing you have been taught is necessarily true. When you move into a state of unknowing and questioning everything, you activate the larger part of yourself, the soul self or true brilliance of you. As this part of you activates, you are no longer in the mind of thought creation. The realization arises that a part of you, but not separate from you, is all knowing. This part of you is not in the mind, but is rather your “I AM Presence,” the true creative genius. When your I AM presence activates, an inner calling, intuition or knowing starts to

form. You realize that the mind is limited, but the soul self (I AM) is not limited and can see possibilities that the mind can’t. The process the I AM uses is inspiration. This inspiration seems to come out of nowhere. An inner calling to go somewhere, call someone, or do something emerges. What a person then needs to understand is that a surrendering to a more expanded part of yourself must take place. As you surrender to this I AM, your brilliance, the mind takes a back seat. You no longer try to figure out things or think things through. You move to a place of silence and act on internal guidance. As this empowerment of the true you emerges, anything that is limiting you will show up to be released. The limits that show up are gifts. These limits are only indicators of where you are still thinking or feeling in limited ways. So the minute you start to feel restricted, ask your I AM: Where am I stuck? The answer will always be about you — it is never about someone else! What will show up is the programming you have accepted as true. The following two quotes from Rumi help bring this to light:

It is becoming aware of your body and your breath. In the beginning, you could put a timer on your watch for every hour. At the hour, take a breath and feel yourself refreshing. Eliminate toxic people from your life   — Many of us have grown up in very toxic households. We have close family such as sisters or brothers or even our parents who kept us from our dreams. We have responsibilities on this three-dimensional Earth towards these folks, but we can also eliminate the need for approval or emotional support from them. It is time to be free — so respect yourself. Practice the art of mindful living —   We know we are supposed to meditate, but it is hard to do when you don’t know what

it is. The easiest process, I have found, is to immerse yourself in nature and just listen for the sounds. Listen for your steps, the sounds of birds and wildlife, and mostly, the nothingness. You will find that the mental noise quiets and peace arises. Sleep over eight hours a night — Sleep   used to elude me. I would always wake up tossing and turning.
