Love in the Time of Corona BY REV. ALAN L. PRITZ

THE WORLD IS IN a challenging place. Our lives have been shifted into uncharted territory as the coronavirus, COVID-19, reaps havoc with economies, societies and global balance. It’s rather humbling to have the world grind to a halt by a sub-microscopic piece of genetic material. Scientific definitions aside, we are called to respond to a scenario that sources — often the media — deem calamitous at best, catastrophic at worst. Yet, I propose a different perspective, one that is not driven by fear, but instead more gracious and magnanimous. First of all, fear does nothing useful. It numbs the mind and fuels reactive, panic-based self-centeredness. Consider a spark landing amidst a dry pine forest. Fire erupts and undoubtedly must be contained. Fearful responses are like winds that whip the blaze into an unfettered inferno. Reasoned strategies contain, control and ultimately eliminate the threat. Our behaviors, which arise first in thought, determine whether the coronavirus will gain further destructive power or, alternately, provide opportunities to ennoble us. The spiritual world is not separate from the physical. It is the subtle canvas upon which the picture of matter is painted. We, however, get to choose and express the color palate it manifests through our thoughts and deeds. One set of choices results in a gloriously expansive masterpiece; another depicts the cruel hues of defeatism, depression and self-centeredness. Each of us selects our contribution to the painting by how we respond to what’s before us, moment by moment, day by day. Naturally, I advocate for making this an opportunity to shine. I know times are difficult, especially for those who are ill or economically deprived. Life often isn’t easy, but it’s always impacted by choices. Giving in to the temptation to shrink, withdraw and focus only on “us four and no more” is a perfect recipe for social/global dysfunction that could be avoided by different choices, by conscious opposition to whatever is contractive. Counter fear with courage, panic with calmness, and meanness with generosity. There is a reason why spiritual traditions discuss proper attitudes and behaviors. It’s because we need how-to-live principles that apply to all circumstances, good and bad. Why is this important? Because we thrive or suffer according to how well we adhere to, or violate, the laws of natural order. Yes, I snuck spirituality into the mix. Ironically, one needn’t subscribe to any faith to acknowledge that harmony is preferable to inharmony, that love, joy and peace are more attractive than hate, despair or violence. This is common sense. Life-enhancing behaviors promote personal well-being and social good. That said, what can we do in the face of the current situation? I’ll make several suggestions — yet preface all by this counsel, “Do that which ennobles, expands and assists. Refrain from that which diminishes, constricts or deprives.” Hopefully these points will seem reasonable and easily put into practice. Start with the body/mind. Be prudent and socially responsible, THE EDGE MAGAZINE 763.433.9291 P.O. Box 664, Anoka, MN 55303 www.edgemagazine.net PUBLISHERS TIM MIEJAN & CATHY JACOBSEN

but not fearful. Fear compromises the immune system and, in the case of a contagious disease, it is self-defeating. We’ve all read the news to understand issues and responses. Add to these whatever promotes health from the inside out: Proper hygiene, diet and, as amenable, immune-enhancing supplements. Exercise and get fresh air and sunshine. Yes, breathe deeply. Relax. Stress and tension deplete energy, so if you can, practice skills designed to recharge and renew. This may sound esoteric, but such skills are common in Yoga, tai chi or qigong circles. A genuine smile is said to distribute life force — prana/chi — to every body cell. The happy person is less subject to disease because happiness attracts a greater supply of life energy into the body. Maintaining a positive, joyful attitude is exactly the right thing to do. Fast from worry. Watch comedies, laugh, and practice appreciation and gratitude. You’d be amazed how deprivation can highlight the abundance we ordinarily overlook — or help foster insights about things we might take for granted. A grateful heart is a powerful force, as is compassion. Unfortunately, people have been encouraged to stockpile. This generates a mentality that prompts a secondary “illness,” greed. If everyone considered the needs of others, they’d revisit the desire to hoard. We have an abundance of goods that will remain if we don’t participate in frenzied buying. While at the store, recognize that excessive buying may cause another to go without. Get only what you require so others can too. Seem simplistic? It is. This isn’t astrophysics; it’s consideration. Just as a micro-organism can bring the world to a halt, basic expressions of loving kindness can help the wheels of global order continue to move smoothly. Lastly, yet most importantly, nourish the inner being. What frees people from suffering? Will money do so? Will toilet paper? Ultimately, nothing material can. Only direct experience of one’s soul nature provides this. The world perpetuates dramas to enforce spiritual truths. One of these is that faith in Spirit is a divine law. A smooth life isn’t necessarily a victorious life. No matter if sickness or death dance about you, do not be discouraged. Earthly life is an ephemeral existence; lasting reality is spiritual, not material. Be helpful and learn to see the Divine in all, regardless of ➤ see CORONA on p. 8

race or creed; love everyone as your own. Selfishness cramps the soul in a limiting prison of material desire. Concentrate on the human family without restrictions. Do your part to improve the world, but don’t be bound by its troubles or you’ll be ensnared by them. That’s the secret of victory over delusion. And, pray. Thought is a force. When it is focused on the Divine and directed with beneficial intent for the healing of individuals, societies or the planet, a tremendous power is released. Although subtle in nature, the vibrations of spirituality and healing generated by prayer engender positive changes in the subtle realms that ultimately manifest in positive material outcomes. Eckankar Cancels International Seminar   Eckankar, a global religious organization based in Chanhassen, Minn., recently announced that its 2020 ECK Springtime Seminar scheduled for April 10–12 in Minneapolis has been canceled in light of recent developments with the coronavirus, COVID-19, pandemic. The annual seminar usually attracts 2,300 attendees from 40 countries. Eckankar’s leadership team consulted with the Minnesota Department of Health and monitored updates from the United States Centers for Disease Control and the World Health Organization to determine how to best be of service to the local community and seminar attendees. “Health authorities around the world are expressing deep concern about the risks of holding large

events in the wake of the worldwide COVID-19 outbreak,” said Patrick Milan, spokesperson for Eckankar. “The health and well-being of the community and seminar attendees was Eckankar’s first priority in making this decision.” Susan Miller, president of Eckankar, said, “Eckankar appreciates the support of a large group of community partners in Minneapolis and Chanhassen. We recognize the unavoidable impact on local businesses who enjoy the support of our visitors, and we thank them for their understanding.” Eckankar expects to hold its fall seminar in Minneapolis in October 2020. The Crossroads of the Coronavirus Disruption Tips to take the Positive Road to Healing Ourselves and Our World BY

LOIS HERMANN

THE CORONAVIRUS, COVID-19, situation is causing so much disruption in our lives. Many are being forced to stay home, a concept that is foreign to people who live busy lives. Our concerns and stress during this time of extreme uncertainty are very real, yet have you stopped to ponder the deeper meaning of why this may be happening? And what you, as an individual, should do? As a Board Certified Hypnotist for 25 years, I’ve had the honor and privilege of assisting clients to access their subconscious, and sometimes, superconscious mind. Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness where the subconscious mind is in a place of focused awareness. A person in a hypnotic state is very relaxed and, while shutting out noise from the outside world, can tap into their inner knowing, become open to shift old patterns and receive positive thoughts for change. Over the years, I have also learned to help people connect with their own wise mind. One of the highlights of my career has been to observe and assist a client who channeled higher sources of wisdom that were concerned that humanity had swayed so far from the true intention of human existence that a major world disruption would occur. They communicated this wakeup call was coming and what we could do to shift the world toward a better, healthier direction. Their message was very clear. It is necessary to shift the enormous amount of negativity in today’s world to a more positive state. While we are isolated in our homes during this time of crisis, there is actually a great deal we can do to shift our mental, emotional and physical state of being so that we may emerge as more positive, more healthy humans — and collectively, shift our world. We are at a crossroads. Let’s take the positive road to healing and to happier, healthier and more positive lives together. Here’s what we can do: • Connect with other human beings — You may think we are more connected via technology, but we have become more physically distant. Technology has been detrimental to our mental and physical wellness. Today, with social distancing, it’s extra

challenging. Start by reconnecting with those who give you joy or who you live with. Shut off the TV, put down your phone and play a game together. Call a valued friend or family member. As human beings, it is built into our nature to connect with others. • Embrace nature — It is a gift. Be grateful for it. Step outside and slowly breathe in the fresh air, feel the warm sun on your face, gaze at the clouds like you did when you were a child. Connect with the trees, the birds and other amazing animals with us. Be thankful for the moment. • Do what brings you joy — Journal, do simple crafts, play that old guitar, cook a healthy meal with your family and make it fun. Creativity and joy stimulates positive thoughts and feelings. We need it now more than ever. • Smile and laugh — Take a break from the Coronavirus news. Pop in a movie that’s bound to make you and those around you to laugh. Laughter is the best medicine. • Ask for assistance — We are encouraged to ask for assistance from our amazing guides to help with healing for ourselves and others. It is a beautiful experience to feel as if we are helping another simply by asking from our heart to lift another’s energy. • Make healthy choices — Be it choices for the foods we eat, the thoughts we think or the things we watch, read or listen to, make the best choices for your health on all levels — mind, body and spirit. Get back to basics with general cleanliness practices. • Choose spiritual practices that resonate — If you have gotten away from what grounds you, re-introduce Reiki, meditation, Yoga, prayer, exercise, hiking, dancing or singing. These are just some examples. These simple acts can make a huge difference in your mental and physical health, with a ripple effect throughout your family and those you touch. Let’s get back to basics for each of our sakes and the world at large. a LOIS HERMANN is a Board-Certified Hypnotist, Certified Instructor, Certified NLP Trainer, Reiki Master-Teacher, and multi-registered medical professional. Be Still, Let Go in the Stillness A Pleiadian Message BY CHRISTINE DAY BELOVED ONES, WE GREET YOU. The veils on your Earth plane have become like fluid streams of light, creating doorways that are wide open to enable you to step forward into a higher terrain of consciousness. Only you, through conscious choice, can take this next step and begin to navigate yourself Home. We, the Pleiadians, are anchoring these energetic doorways open when you choose to step through and re-engage, reuniting within the multidimensional realms of Truth of which you are actually a part. In Truth, you have never been separate. Now you are to consciously participate within the sacred component of your makeup and take your place within the collective consciousness. This is the time for you to embark upon your journey to returning Home — consciously. We hold a mantle for you to navigate this change in alignment to your higher frequency of consciousness. This mantle is being held in place for you until you answer the call, which is being transmitted to you by the sacred aspect of your Higher Self. This is your time to return, through conscious choice, to this sacred component of yourself. Know that this is Divine timing set in action for you, a time for your transformational change. This is the destiny action of you birthing you, returning to reconnection and reunion with your sacred nature. SACRED VEILS You are to access your way through a series of sacred, multidimensional veils via the 1 2  WWW.EDGEMAGAZINE.NET

gateway of your heart. You carry within the heart cells a unique, Divine frequency of a vibrational pattern that can be likened to a key opening a door, for your re-entry Home. You have a part to play within this time of rapid change. A higher potential of consciousness has been unveiled on Earth — and you are being called. An essential light is being revealed and activated this month for you to realign to the sacred frequency of Self. A powerful essence of light is engaging within your heart cells to support you, and guide you, as you choose to align within your heart on higher levels of reconnection that are waiting to reunite within your consciousness. To participate, there are a series of simple steps for you to follow. Remember, this is a natural reinstatement of your essence, set in motion as you consciously choose to engage within this realignment into higher aspects of Truth with your heart cells. Your vision opens you into a different perspective of your life as you re-engage within these higher elements of Truth. This allows the limited perceptions from your ego mind to be released, as you are naturally realigned to a higher state of knowing. You return yourself to the space of realignment to a higher light of consciousness. In Truth, you are the light, and only you can return yourself Homeward.

INNER BELIEFS At this juncture, your life is a mirror of your collective inner beliefs arising from either your ego mind and/or Higher Self. As you awaken into the higher realm perspective of Truth, there is a natural action of the interweaving of this higher-light consciousness.

This can begin to flow within your daily experiences, opening up and revealing to you a deepening of understanding and clarity. These revelations open doorways of opportunity to create new avenues of experiences for you to engage within your world. You will enable yourself to begin to view and interact within the multidimensional components, which have always co-existed within your planet. There is an access now for you to engage within the multidimensional realities to allow you to shift within a totally new environment of knowing and memory. Your higher nature is part of these pure planes of existence. The sacred aspect of your self has never been separate from these higher forms of love, which have always simultaneously co-existed on Earth. You are simply returning Home! Life has become even more energetically intense on your planet and yet, within this arena of energy there is a simplicity that is held within this unfolding. You can access this sacred simplicity, which can be best described as focus points found within moments of your day. You are being called to move within these sacred moments by being still and consciously letting go within the stillness. Allow your awareness to open up within any given moment and utilize the conscious breath (in and out of the mouth) within the space. As you reconnect into this sacred flowing moment, a perfect space of realignment to the light is opened to you. This conscious action by you repositions you dimensionally, moving you beyond the ego mind’s “needing to know and understand.” You are actually reconnecting to the higher realm component that exists on

your Earth plane. This process is designed to align and anchor you to be able to move through each day with a peace and inner joy.

TRANSFORMATION There is a rapid and ongoing transformation and transmutation process activating within your heart cells to allow this reconnection. As a multidimensional tool, your heart is going through an ongoing energetic upgrade, enabling you to move through into a state of multidimensional reconnections. These new states within the heart are realigning you to aspects of the collective consciousness of your God light. You are actively being repositioned within this vast ocean of light, returning Home. Simultaneously, your human aspect is navigating and interacting within your third-dimensional world experiences. It is essential at this juncture that you are actively aware and engaging with both aspects of yourself. This is your next step to consciously engage with your human and sacred aspect during this powerful state of transition — channeling love from the higher realm aspect of yourself to your human aspect, bringing support to the more vulnerable parts of your human element as you move through your life experience. Third-dimensional living is intense on your planet and this intensity is building in momentum. There are many moments of drama when your human aspect engages within the illusion of life. We wish to direct your attention to the parallel expression of the sacred that exists as you are engaged in those moments. This is the time for each one of you to consciously become aware of your sacred component, especially when you are in the middle of a drama in your life. You will find a powerful transformation begin to take place as you choose to simply link into your heart and move within the presence of your sacred, which is a natural part of your makeup. SHIFTING BEYOND We wish to bring this to your attention: when you choose to consciously engage with Truth, which is you actively engaging with your sacred through your heart while you are living your third-dimensional human experience, you begin to automatically shift beyond these cycles of illusion and self-sabotage. As you change the cycle of just living, being human and embrace your sacred, you begin to engage with the higher potential component of yourself. This aspect of yourself is opened up for you. Even if you engage with this Truth for one moment in a day, even if you are not sure that your sacred even exists, this does not matter. When you choose to change this pattern by consciously opening up, even

for a moment, then every cell in your body transforms with light. You actually begin to emerge into a higher alignment to your God consciousness state of Self. When you are feeling fear in a moment of life, open your awareness to align to the existence of your sacred self; a shift takes place within you and the feeling of fear begins to dissolve. This happens because aligning to the sacred moves you beyond the illusion where the fear exists. As you open and address your sacred aspect through your heart, take a conscious breath and let go. The change is you letting go and moving into trust; the sacred part of you will do the rest. Make this conscious shift a few times a day and you will begin to eradicate a lot of old cycles and reestablish the higher aspect of your essence, creating a new flow in your life.

SACRED EXPRESSION Utilize moments to flow within the sacred expression of yourself, and in the same moment your human aspect can be held and supported in the love, which is naturally generated through your heart connection. Each one of you can be moved, repositioned by this sacred flow each day as you choose to actively engage within the higher path access that exists within your heart. Your experiences can and will change within your world as you build reconnection to your heart. As you consciously engage, you will become aware of your higher purpose and new pathways will begin to open up to you. You can be self-empowered as you move yourself, and align yourself, to this new era, into a “new dawning of consciousness” that has always existed within you and now is awakened by you. Being in your heart, living from your heart space, is the most important action that you can take now. This is your time to become more self-realized within your heart. YOUR NEXT STEP Commitment and trust is your next step, wherever this takes you. Open to savor the beauty that exists all around you. It is through your heart connection that you can begin to re-access the magic in your day. A simple activation process is designed to align you into your multidimensional heart, allowing you to engage beyond illusion of the ego mind:   Rest both your palms on your heart space (your entire chest area). Bring your awareness to your hands resting on your heart. This is your heart space! Claim your heart by taking a conscious breath and placing the breath within your heart. This is a monumental step, because you are consciously acknowledging this sacred doorway that exists within you.

As you take this step there is a natural activation and opening to the doorway within your heart. You have now begun to activate the powerful process of your re-awakening. Each time you place the conscious breath within your heart cells, the connection deepens and opens further. You carry a unique Divine vibration within your voice. The sounds you make are like an imprint of a frequency that is recognized throughout the Universe, and your own heart cells begin to open and transform through your sound. We give to you a sacred sound that is designed to move you deeper within the multidimensional makeup of your heart. When you make this sound, the doorways of your heart open up and you are anchored deeper within the vastness of your heart. Your sound will set in motion a reconnection to the higher realm aspect of the sacred. The sacred sound is DANTAE EE (pronounced darn-tay-eee). Make the sound just once and feel, see or sense the energy flow within your heart. Simply be within the essence that begins to arise through your sound. Then begin to build into the sound, utilizing this sound in sets of three. Witness how your sound creates a vibrational echo within the space of your heart cells. Remember, your heart is a multidimensional tool, so the sounds you make will move you into diverse elemental states and spaces that possibly will feel unfamiliar. Just let go and allow your experiences to unfold. Know that all of these spaces that you are accessing are higher aspects and elements of the sacred of you. Repeat this process daily and allow a “letting go” to unfold within your heart. Don’t assess your progress with your ego mind. Remember, your ego mind will not understand this process, and it has a total misperception and misunderstanding of it. Simply be committed to letting go and trusting, allowing this process to reactivate sacred reunion within your heart. We witness you as you claim your rightful place within the collective that exists beyond illusion, within the Higher Realm consciousness of your God light. Aries (Mar. 21-Apr. 19)…Let yourself shine. Though you may be facing some private concerns, listen to your dreams. Don’t echo tension within groups or meetings mid-month; lead the energy out of conflict and into exploration. Stay cautious but flexible around material resources as the month ends. Taurus (Apr. 20-May 20)…People need your grounding quality in the midst of uncertain times. Create a healthy nest at the beginning of April. Mid-April tensions at work can affect self-esteem unless you remember it’s not your monkeys, not your circus. While everyone else is busy, introspect. Gemini (May 21-June 20)…Venus enters Gemini April 3 and your month buzzes. Like a cross-pollinating bee, you’re appreciated for connecting so many different groups; just take care of the tender hearts involved. Step back after April 19 into self-care and prepare for some interesting changes in the months ahead.

April Horoscope: Clarify Your Priorities Mercurial Messages through the Zodiac BY HEATHER ROAN ROBBINS WHAT DO WE LOVE in the face of life and death, and what loving practical, tangible steps can we take to help our world? That’s what Venus wants to know as she trines Jupiter and Pluto as April begins. Jupiter and Pluto conjunct can liberate blocked places, but it also can magnify all things Plutonian, like power struggles, pandemics and other challenges to life as we know it. On April 3, Venus enters talkative Gemini, opening lines of communication, but that can make us nervy. Thoughtful Mercury conjuncts intuitive Neptune this first week of April and we notice our

absorptive permeability, but it can also tap into our intuition and imagination. Imagine health. Do we absorb germs or pollens, the collective fear pattern, or do we absorb spirit and healthy wild nature? On April 7, Mars squares Uranus and tension arises, but also presents the energy to tackle a problem. Channel nervous energy carefully. Reaction times improve, but think before reacting after Mercury enters Aries on April 11. Mid-April, as the Sun squares Jupiter and Pluto, keep those clarified priorities in the forefront to make tough decisions. The sun enters Taurus April 19 and begins the fertile planting season Plant love, beautiful ideas and practical solutions.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)…This is an important month to re-examine your preconceptions. Your imagination and intuition run strong, your mind is unusually sharp and you can learn so much on the Internet and on the sub-ether this month. Observe with fresh eyes rather than look for justification. The doors are open and it’s up to you. Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)…Cranky people, their worries and restrictions can be a challenge. Don’t magnify their anxieties; instead share hope and warmth. After April 3 you may find it easier to express yourself. After April 11, expression flows even easier, just watch a sharp tongue. Go cautiously and lead with love. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)…Recent fog clears out of your brain after April 3. Concerns about the world’s health can create daily conundrums. Keep your sense of humor and adapt to changing circumstances. Be curious about how to make the best of the situation. Look for a challenge with positive outcome April 28-30.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)… You are a considerate person, always aware of other people’s concerns and needs, and that can be painful this month. Support a calm, responsible approach the first week of April and help people understand one another around April 18. Let your curious love, your love for the metaphysical bigger picture, be a refuge for you. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)… Mediate tension between family of origin and chosen beloveds, between home life and work connections. Don’t get stuck in the middle of the dogfight, but do redirect the tension and stand by your dear ones. Trust your intuition in love, with children, and in a new creative focus. Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)… Intuit your way through some delicate issues at home as the month begins. Not everything is as it seems; it’s confusion or a resurgence of old anxieties, not an attempt to deceive. New counselors or work mates offer fresh advice and needed objectivity in the situation. Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan.19)… Some major challenge offers you a chance to build up muscles in your self-concept, but don’t let it harden your heart. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)… Your psyche percolates on important old work, with a real chance to liberate fear and release energy towards future creative process. Ponder how you can liberate old patterns and make new maps. Track logistics carefully April 18-25; make considered concrete decisions around April 28. Pisces (Feb. 19-Mar. 20)… You may feel particularly soft and sponge-like as the month begins, soaking up other people’s projections. Enjoy unusual intuition and imagination, but ground your self-identity in what you do, not what you feel for the moment. Nine Surprising Ways to Live a Longer, Healthier Life BY SUNNY

AINLEY

MORE THAN 10,000 Americans turn 65 every day. While we can’t live forever, living longer and in good health is possible today. Dr. Howard Friedman, an esteemed health psychologist and author of The Longevity Project, has identified common indicators that help explain what causes people with similar backgrounds to diverge in terms of their health and well-being. Here are nine surprising research findings that Dr. Friedman discovered about aging and longevity: • Is cheerfulness an indicator of life longevity? Dr. Friedman’s research finds no correlation between cheerfulness and longevity. In fact, in some cases, cheerfulness can cause unhealthy behaviors. Cheerful people sometimes have optimistic mindsets that may cause them to ignore health concerns or believe things will take care of themselves. • Do married people live longer? YES! And no (that was cruel — so sorry). Generally, individuals who are married and in supportive, positive relationships live longer than their counterparts. However, married men live longer than unmarried men (in general) regardless of the health of their marriage. Not surprisingly, women who escape unsupportive marriages often outlive those who continue to live in unhappy relationships. • Are extroverts more likely to live longer than introverts? The Longevity Project research found no correlation between extroversion and longevity. If you are an extrovert living uncomfortably in introverted situations or vice versa, then your longevity of life will be less than those who are able to relate and commune with others in the way that is enjoyable and comfortable for them. Having a community and social network to interact with were stronger predictors of life expectancy. • Does being a super jock in your younger years help you live longer than the couch potatoes? Nope, so don’t think the impressive trophy shelf in your parents’ basement will bless you with more years than that Atari gamer you sat next to in high school. Exercise is an excellent indicator of life longevity insomuch that regular activity and exercise — even in our later years — will most likely extend your life. But if you were hyperactive in your younger years and have now become more sedentary, all that exercise in your youth has little correlation to longevity. • Does having a pet extend your life expectancy? Not necessarily. Just having a pet will not help you live longer (sorry Fluffy). However, some byproducts of having a pet, such as taking regular walks, will most definitely improve your overall health and well-being.

• Is your education level an indicator of how long you might live? Most definitely. There is a very strong correlation between education attainment and health and longevity of life. • Are wealthy people more likely to live longer lives? That depends (I know, another cop-out answer). Being financially well off inherently provides more opportunities to improve wellbeing, such as access to better health care services, the ability to make healthier food choices, and access to more life conveniences. However, just having more money does not necessarily correlate to a longer or healthier life. • Do religious (or spiritual) people enjoy longer life spans? Yes! But it’s not because the universe has blessed them with sparkly glory or benevolently granted them longer lives. People who engage in a religious or spiritual practice tend to be involved in religious or spiritual communities. These social networks can improve health and support longer life spans. • Scientists versus lawyers: Who typically lives longer? I couldn’t resist this one — who doesn’t want to know this? Am I right? Lawyers and business executives tend to live shorter lives, but it has nothing to do with the nature of their professions. Instead, it has correlated more to their personalities and behaviors that made those professions appealing to them in the first place. They tend to engage in riskier, more careless behaviors that could potentially shorten a person’s lifespan or damage their health. According to Dr. Friedman’s research, choices, behaviors and situations that you put yourself into are more influential to your health and well-being than just being a cheerful person or eating healthy foods. Having a purpose outside of yourself that gives you motivation and the ability to live a consequential life is an indicator of longevity, too. Mark Twain noted, “Life would be infinitely happier if we could only be born at the age of 80 and gradually approach 18.” I hope these tips will help you create a long, purposeful life that matches your unique personality and essence! a SUNNY AINLEY is the Associate Dean of Continuing Education at Normandale Community College and has worked in education, training and workforce development for almost 20 years. The Gift of Unplugging Yourself BY

ANNE BRADY-CRONIN

IT’S AMAZING TO ME how I never even noticed the low-grade anxiousness I was feeling. Always looking, always checking, never wanting to miss, or be missed. The first time my husband dared me to leave my phone behind, we were just dating. I grew up in an era without mobile devices so the idea that I couldn’t go without it for a few hours was ridiculous to me. Until I tried it. After an hour and a half, I caved. “Told you you couldn’t do it” he said. Darn, I hate to lose a bet. “Double or nothing” I said.
“Okay, I bet you can’t go 12 hours without looking at your phone.”
OMG! 12 hours?! He wasn’t messing around!
I honestly can’t resist a bet. It’s a weakness in me. “You’re on.” So, it began. The first two hours were horrible. I was so grossly aware of how much I wanted to look at my phone for calls, texts, voicemails, any form of communication. Any form of proof that I was needed in this world. This was before the day of social media so Facebook, Instagram and the likes were not even an issue. My discomfort was abated only by getting away from my phone and going for a bike ride. Totally stressful! What if I got a flat tire? What if I fell and got hurt? Pa-lease. My ego would not shut up. After a few hours (let’s be clear, it took like four hours!) something magical started to happen. The anxiousness of not having my device started to subside. I started breathing deeper, my shoulders dropped and relaxed. I went for a hike, no phone. We went to dinner, no phone. Out to a movie, no phone. I was hooked! That day I realized that as much as I thought I needed my phone, I really needed time away from it. It wasn’t just a want; it was truly a need. For the last several years I regularly give myself time away from any form of screen. Not just when I can get outside and leave it behind, but my heart craves the absence of pressure, the off-putting feel of the vibration, and the unspoken expectations of others, even if it’s just letting my phone rest on the charger in another room while I am toddling around the house for a few hours.

My Spirit craves the peace and quiet, along with the pure sense of presence — the presence that I bring to each and every moment. No longer am I constantly thinking of what or whom I’m missing, but of the moment I am living right now. The present is called that because it is a gift. Our lives are so busy and so entrained to being “connected” through our devices that we really don’t even notice the constant distraction they are, until we are without them. Unplugging gives me the space to connect to myself, to the people in my space with my total undivided attention and focus. Whether it’s family, friends or work, I can truly be available on every level. My intuitive body speaks to me so much more clearly when I unplug. Spirit’s messages come through so much more easily, because again, I am so totally available to the moment. I know we all have responsibilities, families, jobs and life, but I encourage you to take time away from the screens and truly get present in your life, to your life. Each moment is unique — and once it’s gone, it is never to be repeated. Be there. Be in it. Experience your life firsthand, not

through the screen or camera, or thinking about what everyone else will see and think when you post the pictures. When we start spending time unplugged, we start to recognize how we are living for the reaction of others. Our willingness to accept and appreciate ourselves has totally fallen into the hands of others. We only like us if everyone else “likes” us. It’s sad really. Self-love is something we talk about, but not something we actually practice. Self-love requires us to be totally available to our true selves. That requires us to be attending to, and spending our time with, ourselves — not “us” filtered through the viewpoint of others. The constant expectation and pressure of being plugged in leaves us as observers to our own lives. Your life is not a spectator sport. Get in there. a ANNE BRADY-CRONIN is a psychic coach, facilitator, healer, speaker, medium, shamanic practitioner, Reiki Master and Teacher, bodyworker, life and business coach, hypnotherapist, PSYCH K practitioner and more. Plug Into Your Soul KATHIE ANDERSON DO YOU FEEL STUCK, lost or alone in life, or find yourself restless, distracted or excessively busy? Do you have difficulty sleeping or suffer from chronic fatigue? Do you suffer from addictions, such as an addiction to your smartphone? Traditional shamanic cultures believe uncomfortable symptoms like depression, anxiety and addiction arise out of a loss of connection to one’s soul, that there is a conflict between one’s inner life and one’s outer life. When we’re constantly searching for information online, playing video games and listening to or reading about what’s going on in the world around us, we’re not paying attention to what’s going on within us. This disconnect creates a void in our lives that causes negative emotions and, therefore, a desire to fill the void with something and, hopefully, feel better. Unfortunately, we end up filling the void with things like drugs, alcohol, food, work, other people and technology and information. BY

INNATE ABILITY Fortunately, the soul has an innate ability to heal itself. It communicates to us through our bodies, feelings, dreams, relationships, artwork and dance, as well as through energy work, travel and retreats from everyday life and nature, even the stars. We just need to take the time to listen to and reconnect with our souls, on a regular basis. One way that I reconnect with my soul is through an amazing healing dance practice 1 8  WWW.EDGEMAGAZINE.NET

called Chakradance®, which was founded by Australian Natalie Southgate. It utilizes spontaneous dance, guided imagery, music that resonates with each of the seven main chakras in the human body, and mandala artwork to provide a safe container to go within.

ENERGY AND CONCENTRATION Not only is dance beneficial, physically, regular exercise also increases energy and concentration and decreases depression, anxiety and stress by reducing the brain’s fight-or-flight response, something that the constant interruptions from technology can trigger in us. Spiritually, dance is prayer and a form of meditation that allows us to directly communicate with the soul through our bodies. Chakradance changed my life. It shifted my energy and allowed me to transition into my own healing practice. The name of my business, Soul Full Wellness, even came to me while I was practicing Chakradance. When I first started practicing Chakradance, I knew immediately that it was doing something, because I would have vivid dreams after I practiced it, and I would experience incredible synchronistic experiences during the daytime. For instance, after I practiced the heart Chakradance, I discovered an injured monarch butterfly on the curb of a busy intersection. One of its front wings was broken at the joint, so I bought some Gorilla Glue, and glued the edges of the front and back wings together, so that the front wing would be stable. I took it home with me to nurse it back

to health. I fed it sugar water, and then set it on my knee. It proceeded to walk up my body, and rest on my heart. The heart chakra represents love, compassion and joy, and it is associated with the element of air and, therefore, winged creatures. The following morning, I placed the butterfly on a flowering tree in my front yard. When I went to check on it later, it suddenly flew towards me. I wondered if it had landed on my head, but when I turned around I saw that it had flown past me. It flew about 30-40 feet out, and then circled around, flew over the cat and landed on the same flowering tree, as if to communicate, “Look! I can fly!”

SENSE OF JOY I felt such a tremendous sense of joy from helping the butterfly. It really was a soul full experience. The butterfly stayed with me for four days (the heart chakra is the fourth chakra), and then it went on its way. The kinds of experiences you can have when you unplug from technology and plug into your soul are heartfelt, joyful and meaningful. Technology is not inherently bad; there are a lot of benefits that come from technology. It’s just very important for your health and well-being to balance the use of technology with a connection to your soul, and create harmony between your inner and outer worlds. a KATHIE ANDERSON, former horoscope columnist for The Edge magazine, holds a M.A. degree in Transpersonal Psychology and a Certificate in Dream Studies from John F. Kennedy University. She is a Chakradance® Facilitator, a Wellcoach® and Reiki Master-Teacher. Learn more about the services Kathie offers at www.soulfullwellness.com. A Message from the Wizard Spirit Leaves BY JANET MICHELE RED FEATHER ON A TYPICAL DAY, you will find me seated before 25 community college students. Often I think, “Pinch me; I’m dreaming! Teaching is the most honored profession in the Universe.” Other days, I am nonplussed by the palm-sized babysitters, distractors and anxiety-soothers we call cell phones. Despite my efforts to challenge and inspire, students remain plugged in and tuned out. They are a constant, nagging reminder that disconnecting from technology is the only way back to a real, substantial and healthy life. From 2002-2005, I taught at Oglala Lakota College in South Dakota. I loved my Native students. I would relay an assignment and sit back. For the first 20 minutes, they would gaze vacantly as though at some invisible screen. I would get the dreads. I’d think, “Oh, no. They hate this project. I’m done!” In a matter of minutes, the room would be abuzz, not with sound, but with the vital energy of engagement. The students would cut, paste, read, think, write and think some more. By the end of class, they had created impeccable works of scholarship and art. I do not know how they fare now, as I have not returned since 2005. I can say with certainty that, at the time, concentrating in class or connecting to Gaia came naturally to the Lakota, who for a long time remained immune to the allure of the flip phone. Prior to the invasion of cell phones, news traveled by what is affectionately termed “the Moccasin Telegraph,” that mysterious je ne sais quoi method by which information, events, and gossip swiftly spread throughout the Native community — all without help from broadcast networks or radio towers. My current crop of students spend their days with phone in hand or bud in ear. Contact with the natural realm — or any real plane of existence other than the technological — is an afterthought. Life ensues in the virtual realm of social media and the Internet. They will likely not pause to gauge the thickness of a squirrel’s fur and its predictive connection to the imminent onslaught of frigid weather. They are not inclined to attend to the conversation of crows, avian friends and messengers. They feign no interest in the waning of a fingernail moon, the popping of early spring buds or the sluicing of winter melt water, undulating in oily, rainbowy rivulets over the asphalt. All of these are, instead, “experienced” by clicking on a gif, YouTube video, Instagram or Snapchat. While I’m not in the business of conversion, I do see it as part of my job as educator to foster and facilitate the learning process. I want my students to experience the joy of discovering an unlimited well of ideas and creativity available by accessing the vibrant domains of self and Nature. Unlike my students at the tribal college,

my Normandale students at present respond to new tasks with visible agitation, a flood of questions, and more than a few cleverly disguised attempts to bamboozle me into talking them through every micro-step and nuance of what ought to be their assignment. Were they simply to take a walk in nature to gather their shakes, they could easily uncover a wealth of inspiration through their own observations, talents and original creative ideas. Years ago, I had the impetus to write a treatise entitled “Spiritual Pedagogy.” Alas, I waited too long: that phrase has since taken hold in books and scholarly journals everywhere. Still, I hold fast to its source, which lies in Cedric Red Feather’s Mandan spiritual wisdom. He has taught, and still maintains, that there are four parts of a person: the spiritual, physical, mental and emotional/social. Address the spiritual, and all of the others fall in line. I cannot prescribe for anyone a particular path to the spiritual — for you must find it on your own. It may be as close as your own backyard. Take a walk within the natural world; listen intently to the super-numerous beings all around us. Therein lies the road back from your technological Emerald City. All you need do is click your heels three times and recite, “There’s no nourishment like Gaia. There’s no nourishment like Gaia.” a JANET MICHELE RED FEATHER, J.D., M.A., is a ceremonial singer who has learned over 60 traditional songs in Mandan and Lakota and sings in nine different languages. Janet was a full-time defense litigator in California for nearly eight years. Her life changed significantly after she traveled to North Dakota in 1993 to fast and pray for a way of life. A regular columnist for The Edge, she has also appeared in Psychic Guidepost, FATE Magazine and Species Link. Her book, Song of the Wind (2014, Galde Press), dealt with her experiences as an empath, and her journey through Mandan spiritual culture. She is currently a full-time, tenured English faculty member at Normandale Community College, having taught Composition and Literature for a span of 20 years. COPYRIGHT © 2020. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

Five Ways to Reconnect with Ourselves and Our Natural State BY DELLA

MACIAS, L.M.T. HAVE YOU EVER GONE one day without the use of the Internet, social media, apps or games? Not many of us have — or can. It seems like it could be challenging, right? Let’s face it, technology is everywhere. It’s at the tips of our fingers every day. I’d like to share ways to help you disconnect from technology and ways to return to your natural state of calmness and simplicity, and to feel even more connected without the use of technical means. Technology is amazing. It allows us to interact with distant relatives and friends, look up anything we could think of and feed an idle mind. So, what’s so bad about it? Technology is everywhere, so much that it can be addicting and rule our lives. How often do you use electronics? Too much exposure to electronics may even be harmful to our health, causing headaches and depression, and it can even convince us we can no longer communicate the old fashioned way. Some of us find it difficult to be completely still, calm and quiet and just relax. When is the last time you sat in silence and read a good book? We’ve lost ourselves and the way it used to be. We have lost the simplicity of it all. Even though the use of technology is helpful and very entertaining, it is good to explore reasons and ways to shut it off and distance ourselves from it from time to time. It’s time to feel a sense of much needed serenity. Here is how: • Turn off all electronics one hour before bed. This ensures a good night’s rest and allows relaxation before you catch your ZZZs. Give yourself ample time to ponder and reflect on what has transpired throughout your day and what’s going on in your life. Allow yourself to enjoy the quietness and stillness while you reflect. Think

of what you’re thankful for and imagine what you want for yourself in the near and distant future. Set goals and allow positive thoughts about yourself and your future to flow before you relax and fall asleep. These positive reinforcements and visualizations will be the last thing you think about before you fall asleep and the first thing you think of when you wake up. This technique will gradually give you the mental state of mind to achieve those goals that you set up for yourself. • Step out into nature. Step outside and take a deep breath of fresh air. Be one with nature and allow yourself to appreciate what the elements have to offer. Feel the breeze hit your face as you inhale and exhale. Go for a swim. Allow yourself to float in the water and look up at the clouds. Listen to the muffled sounds of birds and let yourself go. It can be a very relaxing and healing experience. • Meditate and be at peace with yourself. Life happens, and it is easy to forget how to calm our minds. Slow down and give

yourself at least 15 minutes a day — whatever time of day works best for you. Try breathing techniques and meditation. Try to make it a routine and incorporate it into your daily life. • Treat yourself to a relaxing massage. Life can be great, but it can also be very stressful. Reward yourself with a massage. Massage Therapy is not only for relaxation, because it offers much needed relief from pain, stress and anxiety. A great massage session is the key to a calm, rejuvenated and balanced life. • Spend more time with pets, family and close friends. It’s so easy to be plugged in and connected to electronics, and yet be so disconnected with whom we cherish the most. Create a family game or movie night. Sitting down and enjoying a meal together is a great way to reconnect and bond. Encourage everyone to talk about their highs and lows of their day. Don’t be so wrapped up with technology that you forget how important it is to have interpersonal relationships. Communicating face to face allows us to be able to see facial expressions and tone of voice in comparison to texting, which may lead to mixed signals. Give yourself peace of mind by going into nature and meditating. Reinvent yourself and, most importantly, reward yourself with a much-needed massage! a DELLA MACIAS is a Texas Licensed Massage Therapist. She specializes in therapeutic and holistic massage. She is familiar with and enjoys incorporating and introducing metaphysical tools with healing properties such as Tibetan singing bowls, tuning forks, sound therapy, crystals, energy, aromatherapy and essential oils into her life and into her practice. The Gift of Happiness JOHANNA KERN CLOSE YOUR EYES and stay calm for 15 seconds. What do you see with your eyes closed? The obstacles you are facing? Your next tasks? Or perhaps it is difficult for you to do nothing in this moment, to not rush to your daily chores. When happiness leaks out from our life due to daily struggle, stress, worries and the busyness of life, we stop being conscious, and we miss out not only on the beauty and importance of our existence, but also on the gifts that life and the Universe offer us in abundance. The level of our consciousness is directly linked to the level of our happiness. The higher the level of our consciousness, the more happiness we are able to create in life for ourselves and for others. Where did we lose the ability to enjoy our life as it is, to be in the moment, to stay conscious of our own being? When we let ourselves to get “connected” to too many distractions that take over our lives, we get disconnected from our true nature. It isn’t our iPhone, computer or the Internet that keep us in tune with what’s important to us. Happiness slips through our fingers, day after day, when we are chasing the things we don’t need: short-lived satisfaction, the greener grass on the other side of the fence, digital information that clogs our minds with messages taking us away from this very moment, in which we are designed to live. In this very moment, life happens to BY

us. When we are disconnected from this moment, we tune out from who we are, and we tune out from our happiness. We are approaching times when much that we have built our world upon will quickly fall apart. Soon technology will provide us with all we need: 3D printers are already available, and labs producing real leather will soon lead to labs commercially producing real food, vehicles, houses, etc. Money will disappear, not needed, not wanted anymore. What will happen when everyone can have everything they want, at any time they want? Will we experience happiness just because we will have what we want? When we try to find happiness in owning things, the hunger never stops. We always want more. There aren’t enough things in the world to make us happy. Happiness is a process. Discovering our life purpose is also a process. Happiness and living one’s life purpose go hand in hand. Nothing makes us happier than following our heart, doing what we love and knowing that we serve a purpose that is beneficial to ourselves, as well as others. Dharma — purpose, as spoken of in some philosophies — holds that there are no spare parts in the Universe. Each of us is born with a unique set of talents and a perspective that has never been expressed in the world before. So, to fulfill our unique, wonderful purpose, we need to be true to ourselves, and trust the part inside of us that has been trying to direct us to our higher purpose. No matter what our purpose, once we commit to finding it, it will fill our heart

with happiness, inspiration and satisfaction with life. When we replace our mind’s desires with the heart-driven ones, we are able to create what we want in the world. Now turn off your cellphone. Take off your headphones. Close your computer and step outside. Breathe in the fresh air. Walk to the nearest tree. Touch its trunk and look up. Do you feel its happiness? Yes, that tree is happy, unless injured or neglected. That tree knows the gift of happiness. The gift of happiness is ours to give, and take. No power in the world can take it away from us. The gift of happiness can be found in our next breath, in harmony with the rhythm of our heart, in tune with the nature that surrounds us. We are part of the most beautiful world. We are designed to be thriving, evolving and growing into our own power. We are meant to know happiness. Let us be happy. Let us be alive. a JOHANNA KERN is a transformational teacher and multiple award-winning author of Master and the Green-Eyed Hope, 365 (+1) Affirmations to Create A Great Life and Secrets of Love for Everyone. She practices and shares The Master Teachings of HOPE. Her story received international attention, winning praise by readers in North America and Europe, and endorsement by three world-renowned experts in the fields of psychology, the study of dreams and hypnosis, psychophysiology, parapsychology, psi, human development and neuro-computing. Plugging into Gaia: Accessing Earth Energy MARK NECAMP WE LIVE IN A WORLD that is constantly demanding our attention. It draws upon our mental, physical, emotional and spiritual energy for various tasks that we must complete as part of our day-to-day life. We can unplug from what is draining us and tap into the most plentiful source of energy: the Earth. I like to refer to the Earth not as an “it” but as a “Her.” We are always influenced by the Earth. Our bodies are attuned to her magnetic energies that arise. We gain all of our foodstuffs and material resources from her, and our bodies will eventually break down into her, as well. I personify the Earth, or Gaia, not just for spiritual reasons, but to acknowledge the gift of life she is constantly bestowing upon us. To connect to Earth is to really connect to the source of all that we are materially, our place in the world, and to our essential nature as part of the cycle of life and death. To reflect on this connection spiritually is to embrace a pantheistic outlook: we are all connected to the Earth and all living things. Studies have shown (see the resource at the end of this article) that being in nature has holistic benefits. My family and I enjoy camping and being in the outdoors — reconnecting with Gaia — and the time we spend outdoors heals and restores us on a deep and personal level. Our lives are filled with work, school and various commitments and, unfortunately, it is not always convenient to get outside and recharge, but that connection to Gaia can still be accessed in the meditative and spiritual tool of grounding and centering. Grounding is simple in concept. It is the idea of metaphysically aligning your energy, or chi, with that of the Earth, cycling that energy, and integrating it by centering it within yourself. Trees are experts at this, and if you hug a tree (yes, I am a hippy) for a few minutes, you will feel the effect. To do this in the comfort of your own home, you will want to try the following technique: 1. Sit or lie down comfortably. 2. Breathe as deeply and as slowly as you are able. BY

3. Imagine and feel the energy above your head and feel it slowly descend through your head and neck. 4. See (with your mind’s eye) and feel the energy moving further down past your head and neck, through your torso, your waist, your legs and down through your feet. 5. When you are at your feet, imagine the energy moving past your feet, past the ground, and through the Earth. 6. Imagine and feel the energy going further until it goes to the core of the Earth. 7. Breathe deeply, feel the connection to the Earth, and feel gravity comfortably bringing the energy of your body to the core. 8. Rest comfortably in that connection for some time. 9. Still breathing deeply, imagine the energy coming from the core of the Earth, traveling upward through the ground and back through your body — all the way to the crown of your head. 10. Rest comfortably in that connection. When you breathe in, feel your connection from the core of the Earth and through your body. Pause for a moment. Breathing out, feel the energy from your head, through your body, and back to Earth. 11. Take time to let the energies soak through your body, rejuvenate you and

remove any negativity, stress or tension. 12. When you are ready to finish, focus on your center. This is your center of gravity, your dan tien, or your core. It is sometimes located below your navel. Focus any excess energy in your center. 13. Breathe in and out, feeling your rejuvenated center. Open your eyes if they were closed, and take a few moments to pause and feel in your body. The above technique can be used as part of a regular meditation practice, or just when you need it. While this does not replace fostering a healthy connection to the Earth, it can at least help to build that connection and act as a therapeutic technique to cope with daily life. a
