INTRODUCTION Welcome to module PUP 1184 – Skills for Nursing Practice 1.

On successful completion of all the elements within the module, you will be awarded 20 credits at Level 4.

This module makes use of the VLE Blackboard (Learning Edge) to extend work-based support and enhance learning materials that are delivered in lectures, workshops and seminars. The online area will also contain learning objects, such as links to relevant materials available on the internet, as well as links to electronic journals and books to provide flexible 24/7 access to high quality resources. In addition the North West Placement Evaluation (PARE) tool is available online.

Throughout the module I will be your module leader and my contact details are listed on this handbook cover. If you wish to arrange a tutorial outside the timetabled support, please contact your Academic Supervisor to arrange an appointment. This will ensure that your tutor is available to see you and will prevent a wasted journey for yourself.

This module handbook should be read in conjunction with your Programme Handbook available on the Edge Hill website, which details important information regarding confidentiality, academic rules, regulations and support.

On behalf of all the staff within the Faculty of Health and Social Care, I would like to offer you a warm welcome, I hope that you enjoy this module and wish you every success.

ONLINE LEARNING

This module uses an online approach to teaching and learning. The online sessions are identified in your timetable. Each session is time released so will only become available on the date that it is timetabled for delivery. You will then have one week to complete that session and feedback from the tutor will be provided the following week.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

On successful completion of the module students will be able to: 1. Develop and demonstrate range of essential nursing practice skills (Nursing practice and decision-making).

2. Demonstrate the ability to contribute to the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of person centred care (Professional Values; Nursing Practice and decision making).

3. Demonstrate safe and effective communication skills across the age and ability continuum relevant to your field of practice (Communication and interpersonal skills).

4. Demonstrate an ability to use evidence to support practice (Nursing practice and decision-making).

ASSESSMENT STRATEGY

Formative Assessment Within this module a range of formal and informal assessment procedures will be employed during the learning process to support you in achieving the learning outcomes and to improve your performance in the summative assessment.

Students will have the opportunity to practice a variety of generic and field essential skills in a range of simulated environments and receive feedback on their skills development. Guidance will be provided and students will formatively practice an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) in order to prepare students for completion of the summative OSCE in this module and for their first exposure to practice learning. Formative activities that support the development of academic study skills will include, personal and teacher feedback as part of seminar engagement. Students will have the opportunity to develop an understanding of their own learning styles, the development of strategies for reflective practice, effective time management, and approaches to academic writing and referencing.

Completion of Core Skills Training Framework (2014) will also form part of the formative assessment. Core Skills Framework Submission Date will be on the Friday 19th May 2017 before 9.00 am. All core skills MUST be completed by this date.

Summative Assessment The summative assessment for this module will be in two parts: Part 1 OSCE evidencing the students' achievement of an NMC essential skill in preparation for practice 20 minutes This must meet Learning Outcome no 1, 2 and 3; Part 2 Annotated bibliography 1500 notional words; This must meet Learning Outcomes no 4; 100% of the overall module mark.

In order to pass the module, the overall aggregate mark must be 40% or above.

ASSIGNMENT GUIDANCE Part One OSCE One simulated practice OSCE station linked to the completion of a National Early Warning Score.

Written examinations may test knowledge but they do not assess the ability to perform clinical tasks effectively. An OSCE is an assessment technique designed to directly observe and evaluate your performance in standardised mock scenarios. Khattab & Rawlings (2008, p.754) state “The objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) is where students are expected to demonstrate a level of mastery of competency within a specified time at each station. It was developedm30 years ago in Scotland in relation to medicine, in an effort to make examinations more valid, reliable and practical (Harden and Gleeson, 1979). The OSCE provides a more quantifiable form of assessment of the integrated use of knowledge and skills.

How do they work?

A station is set up to enable staff to observe and assess you undertaking a task that will demonstrate your understanding of physiological parameters based on the National Early Warning Score. You will be assessed at one station recording a National Early Warning Score; from a scenario based on your field of nursing. At each station there will be an assessor who will assess you individually utilising an OSCE marking matrix. This OSCE will assess your knowledge and understanding and application of the skills required for recording a National Early Warning Score. This will incorporate professional skills, inclusive of communication technique and record keeping and decision making.

Part Two Annotated Bibliography A 1500 word annotated bibliography based on the topic of body temperature and related to your field of Nursing practice i.e. Adult/Mental Health/Learning Disability/Child – LO4.

Proposed Content This written assessment must be focused on the topic of body temperature and related specifically to your selected field of nursing practice.

It is at the ultimate discretion of each individual student to determine the suitability of material for inclusion in this assignment. However, it is important to consider how the content demonstrates achievement of the intended learning outcome.

Proposed Structure A proposed structure for the written assessment is provided for illustrative purposes.

Headings should not appear in the written assignment.

Introduction – 100 words A clear introduction must be provided, in which the reader is introduced to the purpose and focus of this written piece. There is no requirement to provide a definition of an annotated bibliography.

Overview on the importance of evidence-based practice – 400 words 6

A written paragraph on the importance of evidence-based practice is required, noting how evidence-based practice may contribute to knowledge and understanding in nursing. The accompanying discussion must be supported by five individual reference sources. All in-text referencing must adhere to Edge Hill University, Harvard Referencing Guide and full details of each reference must appear in the final reference list. Note: Each single reference source can be used more than once throughout this paragraph.

Undertake a literature search and locate three sources of information that are focused on body temperature and should be related directly to nursing practice. This is presented in an annotated format – 300 words for each annotation.

This section must aim to provide the reader with a summary of the key features and discussion associated with the selected source of information. This is presented as a descriptive account of each source of information in which paraphrasing of key content is undertaken. Therefore, a distinct descriptive paragraph must be written on each of the three sources (note guidance for selection of sources below) of information with attention to the following key areas:     

The source (and appropriateness) in which this information has been published; The intended/potential audience; A summary of the main content and key messages; Identify any conclusions that have been noted by the author(s); The overall relevance of the content to your field of nursing practice.

Conclusion – 100 words An overall conclusion to this piece of work must be provided. In this case, aim to provide the reader with the key issues addressed, noting any benefits from undertaking this written piece of work. Please do not include any new sources of information in this section.

Guidance for selection and presentation of sources of information for inclusion in the Annotated Bibliography For the purpose of this assessment, the annotated bibliography must contain one each of the following sources of information:   

One full text article published in a professional journal from the year 2013 onwards; One published books (or a chapter in a published book) from the year 2009 onwards; One web site (or a specific area within a selected website);

Each paragraph of the annotated bibliography is presented as having two distinct components. Firstly, the annotation must contain a bibliography line, that is, the full source of the information. This must be presented in Edge Hill University, Harvard referencing format. A descriptive paragraph for each source will then follow. Sources of information utilised to inform this section must be presented in alphabetical order and be presented as a distinct paragraph. Bullet point lists must not be used. Reference details for each annotation must also appear in the final reference list.

General 

This assessment must be written in 3rd person narrative. Therefore, please avoid the use of “I”; 7



An accurate and consistent approach to referencing technique is a key feature of this assessment and will be utilised to demonstrate achievement of intended learning outcomes. Students will be penalised for not adhering to current guidance. The final reference list must be organised in alphabetical order and follow current guidance on referencing technique;



The use of direct quotes should be avoided unless considered as being vital and integral to the discussion. Where undertaken, direct quotes must be presented appropriately;



Proof reading is essential. This includes attention to sentence structure, punctuation and spelling. When using the spell check function, please note the settings on your computer and confirm that the dictionary in use is UK English e.g. ‘utilised, not ‘utilized’;



Within the text of an assignment, acronyms must only be utilised after full details have been provided;



Acronyms/abbreviations must not be utilised within citation lines or final reference lists.

Examination Rules and Regulations OSCE 

Ensure you arrive at least 30 minutes before the start time.



It is essential you bring your library ID card with you. If for any reason you cannot provide your library card you must provide other photo identification. Failure to do so will result in your exclusion from the examination.



You must not enter the examination room until instructed to do so by the invigilator.



Student uniforms must be worn when undertaking an OSCE.



The marking criteria being used in this assessment strategy are attached in Appendix B of this handbook. Module Leaders will also utilise an OSCE marking matrix.



TURNITIN ORIGINALITY REPORTS

An Originality Report provides information about your assignment including: 1. Submission information; 2. Similarity index (percentage matches for text that matches other sources); 3. The original submission with matching text highlighted.

Each time you submit a draft copy of your assignment through Turnitin, an Originality Report will be generated.

The aim of the originality report is to help improve academic writing skills.

The report will be available either within few minutes after the first submission or 24 hours if you have already submitted previously.

There is no set similarity score, it is a score to aid you in checking that your work is correctly cited and referenced.

Accessing Originality Reports 1. Open an Originality Report by clicking on an Originality Report "%" icon from within an assignment's inbox.

2. Click on a highlighted area of text on the left hand (student paper) side.

3. A pop-up window will appear above the highlighted text, displaying the matching text within the source of the match.

4. (Optional) Clicking on the URL link, available on live internet matches, brings up a view of the live web site within a new browser tab or window.

5. Click on the “x” in the top right corner of the pop-up to close the window.

6. To view the matching text within the full source text, click on the "Expand to Full Text" link.

7. The "Full Source Text" view will load into the sidebar.

9. To exit the "Full Source Text" view, click on the “X” button.

Viewing Marked Papers To view a marked paper, click on the blue "View" button next to the assignment. This will open the GradeMark in a separate window, in which the student may view or print the grade and comment information.

Not all browsers will be able to display the complete features of the GradeMark product.

If a browser that is not fully supported is being used, a notification will inform the user.

Viewing Marks 1. To view the full information of a comment or QuickMark editing mark, locate and click on a comment bubble on the paper. This will select the mark in question and open the comment attached to it, as well as emphasising any highlight associated with the comment.

2. To view a QuickMark editing mark, move the mouse pointer over the mark to view the full information of the text associated with the mark. NOTE: When a student opens a paper in GradeMark the general comments is the default sidebar view.

3. To view a full list of comments click on the "comment list" icon located at the bottom of the sidebar.

4. Clicking on the "comment list" icon opens a scrollable window of all comments or marks placed on the paper within the sidebar. To view the location of a mark on the paper, hover over a comment or mark in the comment list and click on the "show on paper" link that appears.

Download and Printing To download or print a paper that has been graded by an instructor using the GradeMark product, the student will need to open the GradeMark paper view. Once the paper is open, click on the save or "printer" icon on the bottom of the viewing window.

There should be no reference within your assessed work to any name or identifying information relating to patients/clients or any staff member of any organisation. Inclusion of such information will result in a failed submission. Where it is relevant to state the name of any organisation, the information should be supported by reference to published documents that are available to the general public and form approved official documentation relating to the operation and provision of that organisation.

It would be considered relevant to include the name of an organisation when:   

Discussing/debating/analysing published data relating to the performance of that organisation.

Discussing/debating/analysing published and approved policy and strategy of that organisation.

Discussing/debating/analysing published research/evaluations/audit/opinion, which relates to and names that organisation.

Where the assignment requires reflection or analysis of specific practice/patient/client/service user scenarios, confidentiality must be maintained by the use of pseudonyms. Whilst retaining the essence of the scenario, where necessary some information may be altered to enhance anonymity, e.g., changing the number of siblings/children/place or type of work/accommodation or housing.

After the submission has been completed a digital receipt is displayed on screen. A copy is also sent via e-mail to your university account. Save the receipt and the paper ID it contains, as this is proof of a completed submission. Such proof is the only evidence of submission in cases of system failure and would be required to challenge a zero mark for non-submission.

Save a copy of the assignment and store on the Z Drive.

APPENDIX B Assessment Marking Criteria: Level 4 Award Pass

Percentage 90 – 100%

Description An exceptional answer, which is virtually excellent in every respect, showing thorough knowledge and understanding of the subject and related theories and concepts. A strong ability to apply theory to practice. Good evidence of analysis and evaluation in the context of the question.

Demonstrates insight and questioning approach. Strong arguments developed. Excellent range of relevant sources used and effectively applied, appropriately using the Harvard referencing system. Excellent presentation and compliant with academic style of writing.

80 – 89%

An outstanding answer, which is strong in almost all respects and clearly focussed on the question. Demonstrates depth of knowledge and understanding of the subject, and related theories and concepts. Clear evidence of use of analysis and evaluation. Demonstrates insight and evidence of questioning approach. Clear and thoughtful arguments developed. Evidence of wide relevant reading and study beyond the course content, using the Harvard referencing system, correctly in the main. Very well written, logically structured and very well presented.

70 – 79%

An excellent answer in most respects, showing evidence of some depth of knowledge and understanding of the subject and related theories and concepts in the context of the question. Some analysis and evaluation. Demonstrates insight. Well-structured arguments. Evidence of substantial relevant reading and study beyond the course content, using the Harvard referencing system, correctly in the main. Very well written, logically structured and well presented.

60 – 69%

A very good answer showing evidence of wide knowledge and understanding of the subject and related theories and concepts in the context of the question. Clear evidence of relevant outside reading and study, using the Harvard referencing system, correctly in the main. Good evidence of analysis and evaluation. Logical arguments developed, but lacks some of the qualities required for higher mark. May lack insight. Well written, logically structured and well presented for the most part.

50 – 59%

A good answer showing broad knowledge and understanding of the subject and related theories and concepts in the context of the question.

Based predominantly on the course content, but with clear evidence of relevant outside reading and study, developing the use of the Harvard referencing system, but with some errors. Sound evidence of analysis and evaluation, but may display weaknesses in argument and some inclusion of description. Emerging arguments developed, covering the majority of salient points, but not in sufficient depth. Mostly accurate but may contain occasional errors. Competently written, logically structured and well-presented, but may contain minor flaws.

Fail

40 – 49%

A satisfactory answer showing adequate, albeit limited knowledge and understanding of the subject and related theories and concepts. Evidence of some outside relevant reading, but limited. Attempts to use the Harvard referencing system evident. Some errors and omissions may be evident.

Basic structure and development evident but largely descriptive. Core elements attempted.

30 – 39%

A marginal fail, showing some knowledge and understanding of the subject, but lacking in depth. Likely to contain errors of understanding and fact.

Limited reference to outside reading. Largely descriptive with unsubstantiated arguments and some key issues missed. Lacking focus on the question in places, with inclusion of irrelevant material. May be poorly expressed, loosely structured, short or incomplete. Unlikely to comply with Harvard referencing.

20 – 29%

A poor fail demonstrating little or insufficient knowledge and understanding of the subject, which is often incomplete or inaccurate. Little reference to outside reading and largely descriptive with irrelevant discussion. Poorly constructed, text is disjointed and/or imbalanced arguments. Marginal relevance to the question. Inadequate presentation and disjointed structure. Unlikely to comply with Harvard referencing.

1 – 19%

An outright fail, which misinterprets the question or bears no relevance to the question. Minimal knowledge displayed with fundamental errors and misunderstandings. Very poor standard of presentation with very poor, to no structure evident. Unlikely to comply with Harvard referencing.
