amosa Land, Inc. opened the month of March with two new milestones for Seawind this year: the blessing of Tower 3 and the topping off of Tower 4.

The multi-awarded homegrown developer is excited to welcome another set of Seawind homeowners to its newly completed 7-storey Tower 3 that houses 180 units.

Tower 4 is already also a step towards completion as the last batch of cement was poured to top off the construction of the building.

“What we commit, we deliver,” pledged DLI’s assistant vice president Dani Manlangit. Tower 3 took the fastest completion by far in 14 months.

Turnover of Tower 3 units is expected within the month. The 229-unit nine-storey Tower 4 will see completion in the third quarter of the year.

The multi-awarded homegrown developer is excited to welcome another set of Seawind homeowners to its newly completed 7-storey Tower 3 that houses 180 units.

Tower 4 is already also a step towards completion as the last batch of cement was poured to top off the construction of the building.

A win for high-grade buildings With Davao City’s of�ice space market being consistently dominated by the Information and Communication Technologies and Business Process Outsourcing (ICT-BPO) sector, high-grade of�ice buildings continue to enjoy high occupancy from it. One of the world’s safest cities

URDER City” -- that was how the defunct Asiaweek described Davao City in the early 1980s.

Each day, some two to three people were killed and thrown in the ditch. Foreigners and even those from nearby provinces shunned what became the country’s “killing fields” (a sobriquet bestowed to Cambodia once upon a time).

There was also a time when Davao City was touted as the Nicaragua of the Philippines. In fact, Agdao – a main business district which hosts a large slum area located in the city proper – was the bastion of killings that it earned the nickname “Nicaragdao.”

However, killing and hostilities were not confined only in Agdao but also in other parts of the city. One scribe wrote: “Criminalities were commonplace in the most parts of the suburbs, summary killings were widespread.

The communist movement had established its ranks and

penetrated most of the major districts of Davao and those who did not cooperate in their cause were punished and tortured to death. Fear and terror prevailed amongst its people and the city never dared to crawl to little progress.”

In the foreign press, Davao City is noted for the bombings that happened in the city.

San Pedro Cathedral, situated at the very heart of the city right across the Sanguniang Panglungsod (City Council) building, is the oldest church in Davao City.

The city’s premier historical landmark, it now recognized as a National Cultural Treasure.

On Easter Sunday of April 1981, two grenades were thrown into the congregation as the traditional Easter service was concluding.

Floren Baltazar, who practically lived more than his life around the Cathedral selling religious items at the church ground, told Davao Today on what happened that particular day. “I can’t

say how many died, but I remember that it took five fire trucks to clean up the blood, in the aftermath of the incident,” he was quoted as saying.

Twelve years later, during a mass in December in 1993, another bombing incident happened in the same Cathedral. This time, only seven people were killed but about 151 others were injured, of which 32 of them were wounded seriously.

Dory Flaviano, publisher of a Davao daily who witnessed the bombing, said there were three bombs that exploded. The first one blew up at the center aisle. The second bomb went off near the altar while the third one shattered the main entrance fronting San Pedro Street.

A few days later, two motorcycle-riding men threw a grenade at a mosque, a few blocks away from the San Pedro Cathedral.

Aside from the two bombings that happened in San Pedro Cathedral, two more bombings took place

in the city: one at the Davao International Airport and another one at the Sasa wharf.

On March 4, 2003, a bomb which was planted inside a backpack blasted in the waiting shed outside the old airport terminal building. Some 21 people were reported killed and at least 148 others injured.

One of those who died was William P. Hyde, an American missionary from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He died “in surgery from head and leg injuries.”

According to reports, Hyde was there to fetch fellow American missionaries. “I just heard it explode to my side,” recalled American missionary Barbara Wallis Stevens, who was wounded slightly. “I was carrying my infant son so I grabbed my daughter and picked her up and ran away. I was afraid there could be more bombs.”

Almost a month later, another bomb exploded at the Sasa wharf. About 17 perished, including children. In addition, 56 others were injured.

The most recent

bombing happened in 2016 when a bomb exploded at around 10:20 p.m. on corner Padre Gomez Street and Roxas Avenue.

More than 60 people were injured and left some 16 people dead.

Today, the murder city is no longer such.

In fact, it is now one of the world’s safest cities. Out of the 349 cities ranked by the website Numbeo. com, Davao City was the only metropolis in the Philippines that made it to the top 10.

In fact, it was considered the fourth safest place.

If the city has a high safety index, the website said, it is considered “very safe.” The safety index of walking alone during daylight in Davao City is 93.75 percent while it was 76.69 percent at night.

“Safety, security and rural urban feels,” commented Michael Jereza, an online marketing agent at Park Avenue Residence Inn and Suites. “It’s peaceful and therefore livabe,” said Serafin Ledesma, Jr., a noted newspaper columnist and publisher.

“This is because of the matrix of stepping points established in the city. New faces are monitored and when necessary are reported to police authorities. Crime index is one of the lowest in the country and discipline has become a way of life.”

It is now wonder why Davao City is now the trade and commerce center of Mindanao.

It is just one hour and thirty minutes by plane from Manila (45 minutes if from Cebu City). Davao is also the gateway to East Asian countries, particularly Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore.

In 2006, Davao hosted the tourism forum of the members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. “Davao is slow compared to Hong Kong, Bangkok, Manila, and Cebu,” wrote Ernie Abella, editor of Madayaw, a magazine that was released in conjunction with the event.

ood speaks of an in�inite language that only the palate understands. It speaks of life – the very reason that fuels one to go forth and eat. And in the city, food has a distinctive category that, when spoken, merits of a particular high that elevates every dining moment.

Over the years, Davao has become a mecca of gustatory dining places and yes, foodies that are constantly seeking for a new palate adventure. Be it inside a classy restaurant or a hip-for-allages bistro to the more dramatic insides of a cafe, Davao has seen the rise (and fall) of these places. Add to that, the emergence of franchises that has kept the city excited.

Despite the in�lux, many still remain skeptic. Yes, we are adventurous but --- there always seems to be a but. At the end of the day, we still crave for traditional �lavour pairings; we still crave for that certain taste of comfort.

A certain taste of home.

Tapa King is a good example. Since opening in 2015 (Davao), Tapa King has slowly invaded the malls and has since been serving a broader market. Continually advancing its presence in Mindanao, the fast food chain has recurrently introduced palate engaging dishes on their menu.

Basically, TK serves breakfast meals and pinoy favourites. However, as it evolved into becoming a formidable player in the dining

scene, TK has since introduced the Filipino palate to a pletora of �lavour pairings that are very reminiscent of childhood and Filipino culture.

Adding to that, Presidential son, Baste Duterte, endorsing them for their “authentic, no pretenses, what you see is what you get” approach to food – something that every Dabawenyo can very well relate to.

Speaking of franchise and local �lavours, Davao’s very own Out of Nowhere Kitchen is also a forerunner when it comes to expansion. Like Tapa King, the restaurant has opened their doors, not only in the metropolis, but nearby cities and soon inside a mall.

Although very modern, their in-your-face approach to food has truly made an impact to anyone who craves for a plate of robust dish anytime of any day. Again, like TK, OON is not afraid to experiment -- thus having a more extensive menu that excite diners. And yes, OON’s repertoire of �lavours cores upon what Dabawenyo wants.

Of which, Asian Cow is another example of a revolutionary dining place – it’s not afraid to introduce pairings that may either hit or miss Davao’s palate. But one thing is certain, Dabawenyo’s love for local brews prevail over the mainstream. Purge Roasters, over at Tulip drive, is a de�inite example. They have a selection of locally grown and produced coffee beans that will elevate your coffee experience. Just like Mugshots Wine and Cafe, their love for coffee has spilled over the palates of their consumers.

For Dabawenyos, naked �lavours also mean opening their life to the public. In other words, sharing traditional recipes that molded their palates for everyone to enjoy.

Take Cafe Julieta for instance.

Though the restaurant reeks of the modern complexities of the world, their menu is downright classic and very Pinoy. Same goes with El Savores wherein their menu cores upon re-introducing regional palates to anyone who craves. Not to mention, the newly renovated Antonio’s Bar & Grill – their interiors might have changed but their menu remains the same. Giving us more and more reason to eat.

Indeed, there is an abundance of gustatory dining places in the city. And Dabawenyo’s are slowly embracing the change in their palate.

On average, a building will need at least five megawatts of electricity, said Romeo M. Montenegro, deputy executive director at the Mindanao Development Authority and head of the Mindanao Power Monitoring

Council.

The buildings will not only be the one requiring electricity as the city’s outskirts have also been attracting investors that want to convert these idle lands into commercial business district. Just like a building, a CBD development will require between five to 10 megawatts of power.

The cityd’s power requirements, based on the record of the Davao Light and Power Co., are about 410 megawatts and are growing by 6.5% annually.

Milan, also the advisor of the Aboitiz Equity Ventures and a retired executive of Davao Light, the subsidiary of the Aboitiz Power Corp., said that the city’s distribution

unit “will continue to look for new cheaper power sources to satisfy the growing needs of its franchise area.”

After all, the city will eventually become among, if not the most, industrialized cities in the country five years from now.

LGU’S CONTRIBUTIONS The city government of Davao City is contribut-

ing to the rising skyline in its own humble way.

It has lined up several multi-story buildings for a number of its city offices in addition to its many horizontal big ticket infrastructure projects.

Arjean Jumamoy, City Engineer’s Office (CEO) planning and design division head, said that among those

being constructed or planned to be built are a modern public library costing P40 million, Museo Dabawenyo worth P100 million, the Davao City Investment Promotion Center (DCIPC) valued at P59 million, the CEO building costing P62 million and the Agdao Farmers Market worth P800 million.
