adayawan Festival is all about celebration of culture and ethnicity in the Land of Promise.

It is about remembering the indigenous tribes and its ancestors who shaped Davao City’s unique diversity and paved the present to become a better place to live for the next generations.

As modernity looks back at its humble origins, one way of preserving the indigenous heritage is to continue its practice.

These practices have their own relevance in celebrating the Kadawayan Festival.

One such cultural gem is the Tribal Games or fondly recognized as “Dula Kadayawan”.

It is an exhibit of traditional games played by the Indigenous People when basketball, football, volleyball and other Olympic sport were still an idea of the geniuses who invented it.

The Tribal Games has a vast impact in uniting the 11 Indigenous People and Muslim Tribes despite its differences in dialect, beliefs and practices.

In this sequence of the month-long celebration, the Ata, Bagobo-Klata, Bagobo-Tagabawa, Matigsalog, Ovu Manuvu, Iranun, Kagan, Maguindanaon, Maranao, Sama and debutant Tausog will come to play in one battle ground.

This year’s Dula Kadayawan is set on August 16, Sunday at the grounds People’s Park.

It will feature 14 different Tribal and Muslim games including Sipa sa Lama, Totaringki (fire making), Sipa sa Mangis, Siklot, Kanggarotaya, Bubuntug (bamboo spear), Karang (wooden stilts), Sisibow, Kakasing (wooden spinning tops), Urusoy (tug of war), Pana (bow and arrow), Sosakoro (water fetching), Bibinayo (rice pounding), and Solopot (blowgun).

SIPA SA LAMA. Sipa sa lama is a like version of “takyan” but with more grace and ceremony.

Team members try keep the ball from hitting the ground for as long as they can.

TOTARINGKI. Players will have to try their best to produce fire using indigenous materials.

SIPA SA MANGIS. A box is suspended 20 feet or higher from the ground.

The box is wrapped in colourful cloth or paper and tapestripes. Below the box are hung ball-like figures which correspond to how many points the player gets when hit by a ball kicked by a player.

Once it falls, the player gets the point.

SIKLOT. Players balance the stalks of cassava on one hand, toss it and try to catch as many as he/she can.

KANGGAROTAYA. Traditionally this sport pits against two teams to settle differences on a certain issue. It is the proper venue to show gentleman’s courageous display of the agility and strength. This is the Moro version of tug of war.

BUBUNTUG. Spear throwing. Players must hit a rolling target by releasing or throwing his spear.

KARANG. The game is a race to the finish line while participants walk on wooden stilts.

SISIBOW. This is similar to the Filipino game called “siatong” where players try to hit a target from a distance.

KAKASING. Sipa sa Mangis is playing wooden spinning tops with no nail.

The longest to stop spinning wins the game.

USUROY. A sport that pits two teams against each other in a test of strength: teams pull on opposite ends of a rope, with the goal being to bring the rope a certain distance in one direction against the force of the opposing team’s pull.

PANA. The players of the game are all in one line as they try to aim for the target using primitive weapon for hunting, bow and arrow.

SOSAKORO. The ladies from various tribes also take part in this physical activity, showing their competitive side by using bamboo poles in fetching water.

BIBINAYO. Binayo is the traditional way of separating the hull from the rice by pounding it.

SOLOPOT. Solopot or blowgun is used in this game. The winner of the game is determined by who blows the farthest using solopot.

rom highland to island – that is how Davao City is being described.

Its boundaries encompass commercial areas as well as beaches, mountains, and forests. Developed during the early 1900s when Japanese migrants set up plantations along its shores, Davao is now considered as one of Asia’s best cities.

The reason why Kadayawan sa Dabaw was launched in 1986 was to showcase the city as a peaceful destination for other people from all over the country to visit and to do business. Aside from the festivity, which happened every third week of August, people flock to see the city’s tourist attractions.

In time, Davao City became the gateway to Southern Mindanao’s attractions. All over the country, Davao is an ecotourism destination. For visitors and foreigners who have come to the city for the first time, here are some of those places you should not miss going to – while waiting for the big events that will transpire

during the Kadayawan: Philippine Eagle Center: The center, built in Malagos, Baguio District, has been doing its best to educate the Filipino people on the importance of the country’s bird icon and its habitat. Its facility was actually opened to the public in 1988 to raise awareness among those who visit the center.

Majority of its visitors are children on school-sponsored field trips.

Nestled at the rolling foothills of Mount Apo, the country’s highest peak, the center is not only home to Philippine eagles but other birds as well and plant species that are unique to the Philippines.

There are also brown deer, monkeys, wild pigs, and a

huge crocodile. Most of these wildlife species are placed in respective cages though so you don’t have to worry.

Malagos Garden Resort: Located just two kilometers away from the Philippine Eagle Center, it originally part of an orchid farm that grows the world-renowned waling-waling orchid and other exotic plants, the site was later redeveloped to become an ecological center as well as a getaway place for urban dwellers.

Today, the inland nature theme resort offers visitors a myriad of orchid varieties, exotic plants and tropical fruit trees which may be available for picking, and a bird

he festival season has started after Vice Mayor Sebastian Duterte banged the gong on Friday to signal the opening of the Kadayawan sa DAbaw.

The festival, which serves as the thanksgiving of the city to its 11 tribes, is also known to attract visitors to the city.

And the hotel industry, the main accommodation sub-sector of the tourism sector. Is expected to make a killing.

Regina Rosa D. Tecson, head of the City Tourism Operations Office, said that it is this time of the year when the accommodation facilities usually have an occupancy factor above of 90%.

Hotel revenues, said Tecson, are even expected to increase because the city government decided to prolong the celebration to a month instead of just a week.

“We want our visitors to enjoy the sights and sounds of the festival,” she added.

Because of the annual festival, the city government believes it could achieve its target of three million tourists as, based on its report, the number of tourists during the first six months of the year was about 1.2 million,

8.6% higher than the number during the same period last year.

Hotelier Benjamen J. Banzon Jr., manager of the Royal Mandaya Hotel, confirmed that it is in the third quarter when establishments like this usually make the best business.

“Kadayawan is one of those times when we (hotels) are really full,” said Banzon.

However, he said the industry must also try to improve itself by both expanding and renovating its facilities like the hotels.

In the case pf the Royal Mandaya Hotel, the owners, the Escandor family, are spending about P50 million to renovate its facilities and add more amenities. Among the key parts of the capital expenditure is the renovation of the hotel’s swimming pool.

Tecson welcomed the move of the hotel to enhance its offerings to tourists as this will allow the latter to have a better experience during their

visit.

“Tourists always look for better service for them to consider coming back,” she said.

In this way, the hotel sub-sector will continue to gain from the festival and other activities that are expected to draw more tourists to the city.

A Kadayawan icon

hen the Kadayawan Festival first came into existence, the Philippine eagle was not part of the celebration. The festivity was then known as Apo Duwaling – as a way to honor the three known icons in Davao: Mount Apo, durian and waling-waling.

But in time, when the festivity was changed into its present name, Kadayawan sa Dabaw, the Philippine eagle became not just an icon but also a symbol of Davao and the festival itself. From street dancing to floral float parade, the endangered bird figures prominently.

An endemic bird, the Philippine eagle represents the Filipino people. In fact, then President Fidel V. Ramos proclaimed it as the country’s national bird when he signed Proclamation No. 615 in July 1994.

The eagle, he said, is found only in the Philippines and as such becomes a source of national pride.

The Philippine eagle is one of the well-loved birds in the world. Charles Lindbergh, an American aviator, military officer, author, inventor, explorer and

Honing children’s literacy abilities, culture appreciation through Smart’s roster of mother tongue-based apps

In response to the lack of interactive local content for learning, Smart Communications (Smart) entered into public-private partnerships with several local communities to create #LearnSmart Mother TongueBased Literacy Apps. Throughout 2018 until right before the start of the current academic year, the Philippines’ leading wireless services provider developed and launched nine interactive mobile applications in various local languages in collaboration with the Department of Education (DepEd) and academic institutions nationwide.

To date, Smart has launched nine Learn Smart literacy applications: Bahay Kubo (Filipino), Kaalam (Cebuano), Ta’allam and Tahderiyyah (Arabic), Matisalug (Matigsalug indigenous peoples Tribe of Davao and Bukidnon), Kaaram (Waray), Katao (Inabaknon), Singsing (Kapampangan), and Sanut (Ilokano).

Beyond using the innovations for literacy building, the LearnSmart mother tongue-based learning applications intend to help promote the different cultures throughout the Philippines.

The lack of localized educational materials is more evident in indigenous peoples (IP) communities, where available learning materials are not contextualized. This is the reason why Smart developed Matigsalug, the first tribal app of its kind that showcases songs, dances, and chants from the Matigsalug tribe of Davao and Bukidnon. While primarily intended to teach basic literacy to young learners of the Matigsalug tribe, the app also appeals to anyone who wants to learn more about the culture of the said IP community.

“Not only will the app help young members of the Matigsalug tribe learn in a ‘high tech’ way, but it will also help people from other areas understand and appreciate our culture and traditions better,” says Datu Dionesio Siawan, a leader of the Matigsalug tribe. A first of its kind in the Philippines, content and development partners for the IP app include the IP community in Sitio Contract, Datu Salumay, Marilog District in Davao, Pamulaan Center of IP Education, ACLC College Davao and Gensan, and Skeptron Business Solutions.

People can also learn more about the rich culture of the Bangsamoro region with the app Tahderiyyah, which is based from the Islamic Kindergarten curriculum implemented in the region. Aside from short videos on prayers and stories that feature Islamic values, the app also contains interactive games that focus on Arabic alphabet and number learning. Its developing team consists of reps from the Bangsamoro

Development Agency, FEU Institute of Technology, and Teach Peace Build Peace Movement.

Another Arabic app is Ta’allam (Arabic for “to learn”), developed specifically for Filipino Muslims by Smart together with content and multimedia partners from DepEd General Santos and Sarangani, the local government unit of Sarangani, Mercy Foundation, Young Moro Professionals, ACLC College Gensan, and local religious leaders. The app was initially developed to support the implementation of DepEd’s Arabic Language and Islamic Values Education (ALIVE) Program in General Santos City and Sarangani Province. Aside from reading and counting exercises, the app features Islamic prayers such as Dua for upon waking up and before sleeping, as well as for before and after meals. Ta’allam also details Wudhu prayers for ritual washing of the hands, mouth, and different body parts, as well as Salah for Muslims’ 1st to 5th obligatory prayers.

“After its deployment, the Ta’allam app has been so effective that even non-Muslim kids have started to attend ALIVE classes in their school, which aims to promote peace-building,” ALIVE teacher Ustadz Saide Tobias proudly shares.

“These apps give a sense of importance to Muslim heritage, which is not given the same exposure as contemporary culture that dominates the mass media,” says Wilson Yu of Tahderiyyah multimedia partner FEU Institute of Technology. “Having an app with content that they can actually understand can help shape the identity of Muslim learners and make them proud of their heritage.”

For the people behind Smart’s education programs, shared value is key. “Our goal is to build strong partnerships with different stakeholders who can help us develop sustainable innovations that bring real value both to the company and the beneficiary communities,” explains Stephanie Orlino, Head of Education Programs at Smart.

environmental activist, described it as “the air’s noblest flier.”

The Philippine eagle is second only to the Madagascar sea eagle in rarity. In size, however, it beats the American bald eagle; it is the worlds’ second biggest – after the Harpy eagle of Central and South America.

Outside of the Philippines, the Philippine eagle was completely unknown. It wasn’t until 1896 that the world came to know the bird. That was when John Whitehead “discovered” it somewhere in Samar. The English naturalist called it the “Great Philippine eagle.”

Later on, the bird was called Philippine monkey-eating eagle. Its generic name, Pithecophagacomesfrom the Greek words pithekos (which means “monkey”) and phagein (meaning “eater”). Many Filipinos thought the bird only eats monkeys.

Further studies, however, showed that monkeys comprised an insignificant portion of its diet; in fact, the bird eats mostly flying lemurs, civet cats, bats, rodents and snakes. Because of this finding, the government – through Presidential Decree No. 1732 in 1978 renamed it to its present name.The non-profit Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF), Inc., whose primary task is to save the bird from extinction, describes the country’s pride in these words: “The Philippine eagle stands a meter high, weighs anything from four to seven kilograms, and has a grip three times the strength of the strongest man on earth.

“With a wing span of nearly seven feet and a top speed of 80 kilometers per hour, it can gracefully swoop down an unsuspecting prey and carry it off without breaking flight,” PEF adds.

In its bid to save the endemic but critically endangered Philippine eagle from extinction, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) may deploy another pair of the country’s bird icon to the United States.

Environment Secretary Roy A. Cimatu said his department may expand the deployment of the endemic birds to the United States as one institution (although unidentified at the moment) “has signified interest in looking after a pair of Philippine Eagles to help conserve the species,” said the state-owned Philippine News Agency (PNA).

Cimatu believed that sending a pair of Philippine eagles abroad would help strengthen efforts in saving the bird from joining the dodo into extinction.

The dodo is an extinct flightless bird that was endemic to the island of Mauritius.

It must be recalled that during the celebration of Philippine Eagle Week (PEW) last June 4-10, two eagles were flown to Singapore. “Sending Geothermica and Sambisig to Singapore is a historical milestone and a tangible indication that the international community is needed in the protection and conservation of the Philippine eagle,” Cimatu was quoted as saying.

The Philippine government, through the DENR, signed the historic wildlife loan agreement with the Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS) “for conservation-related purposes, including breeding.”

park that houses several endemic species. A bonus: Malagos Gardens Amazing Bird Show and sculptures of Philippine National Artist for Sculpture Napoleon Abueva and the Malagos Chocolate Museum, the very first in the country.

Davao Crocodile Park: Closer to the city, it is located at the Riverfront Corporate City along Carlos P. Garcia Highway, Maa. With about 700 crocodiles, including “Pangil,” the country’s biggest crocodile, the park is making waves as one of popular tourist spots in the city.

Actually, the park is more than just a crocodile farm; it also houses other kinds of animals and plants. As soon as you enter, you would be greeted by colorful birds of all kinds: eagles, parrots, and lovebirds. Many are placed in cages but there are birds that are merely tied to their bird houses. Of course, you’d also find snakes, monkeys, and freaky lizards, too.

GAP Farming Resort: Not far from Davao Crocodile Park is Davao City’s original tourist destination. It is located about 30 to 40 minutes from the city proper via the Buhangin-Panacan Diversion Road and through the Ma-a Diversion Road.

The Gift of the Lighting, a book written by Alfonso J. Aluit, describes the resort in these words: “Ten hectares of hinterland converted into a recreation park, nature reserve and educational center, colorful and lush with tropical flora, complete with

all amenities for clean, wholesome enjoyment for individuals and groups.”

Eden Nature Park and Resort: For those who want to get away from it all, they can troop to Eden Nature Park. At 2,650 feet above sea level, Eden Nature Park offers a breath-taking bird’s-eye view of the city and the Davao Gulf in the distance.

Discovered sometime in 1971, the resort used to be a logged-over area covered only by a blanket of wild grass.

For the adventurous ones, they can try any of the following rides: Skyrider (20-meter high zipline), Skycycle (bicycling 60 feet above the ground), Skyswing (a swing ride suspended 95 feet from the ground) and Skywheel (balancing a metal wheel 60 feet up in the air).

Deca Wakeboard Park: You have to travel to Tacunan, Mintal if wakeboarding is your thing. Lifestyle riders and international trippers find this place an ideal and convenient spot to spend their wakeboarding holidays. Usually, riders are towed behind a motorboat but in this place, riders are towed using cables.

D’Leonor Inland Resort and Wavepool: If you’re bored with all of those aforementioned extreme adventures and want something new, then go to this place. It sits on 26 hectares of land with several amenities: a surf rider, a zoo, a zipline, a cable car, overnight cottages, restaurants, and picnic area. It is located at Communal,

Purok 5, Cabantian, Davao City, just a 15-30 minute-drive from the heart of the city.

D’Bone Collector Museum, Inc: Bones, skulls and skeletons of animals and fishes are what you will see inside the D’Bone Collector Museum, Inc. in San Pedro Extension, Bucana. But what is enthralling is the fact that the collections come not only from the Philippines but all over the world. Some of them are bones of endangered species; others are what you see only in Discovery Channel or National Geographic.

Museo Dabawenyo: A few walks away from D’Bone Collector Museum is this museum. Relics from the past, yellowed photographs, eye-catching sculptures, thought-provoking paintings, creative diorama, list of former governors of undivided Davao, replica of controversial Datu Bago, and the eleven tribes inhabiting the city.

Going to Davao might be one of the things that you want to do before you die, however you should also know where particularly in Davao you should go to make the best of your trip.

Just some reminders.

Klata-Guiangans are group of people who occupy a small territory stretching from Catalunan to Calinan. They congregate in Biao, Tagakpan, Dulian, Sirib, Gumalang, and Tamugan. Guiangan, with variants like Guangan, Gulangan, or Jangan, means “forest dweller.”

Kagans, also called Kalagans, are agriculturists as they cultivate cash crop s like rice, corn, abaca and co conut.

at Jurong Bird Park, home to some 3,500 birds across 400 species, of which 20% is threatened. “With millions of tourists flocking at (Asia’s largest bird park), we are bringing the eagles closer to the international community in the hopes of encouraging international attention and support for their conservation,” Cimatu pointed out.

Another reason for sending eagles abroad also serves as “a biosecurity measure to ensure the survival of the species as a fallback population in the event of catastrophic events like disease outbreaks or extreme natural calamities taking place in their Philippine habitats,” explained Cimatu.

of Philippine eagle survived in the wild. Most of them can be found in the forests of Mount Apo and other parts of Mindanao. Other remaining birds can also be seen flying over theforests of Sierra Madre in Luzon and Samar and Leyte in eastern Visayas.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List included Philippine eagle in its “critically endangered” raptor.

In 2012, it joined the list of 17 critically-endangered birds in the Philippines, along with the Philippine Cockatoo, Rufous-headed Hornbill, and Sulu Bleeding Heart.

“On the average, a Philippine eagle pair needs about 4,000 to 11,000 hectares of forest land to survive in the wild, depending on the number of prey items in the area,” pointed out Haribon, the pioneering non-government organization in eagle conservation.

Since the 1900s, more than 70% of Philippine forests have been lost to make way for urban and commercial developments.

Kadayawan is derived from the friendly greeting “Madayaw,” a term taken from a Dabawenyo word which means “good,” “valuable,” “superior,” or “something that brings good fortune.”

In the beginning, the festivity was called “Apo Duwaling,” which was taken from the three icons of Davao: Mount Apo, durian, and waling-waling.

Today, Kadayawan is represented by four icons. Aside from the three aforementioned, the Philippine eagle was added as the Philippine Eagle Center is located in Baguio District of Malagos.

The controversial durian was once described by a foreign scribe as a fruit that “smells like hell but tastes like heaven.”

The waling-waling is endemic not only in Davao but also in Cotabato and Zamboanga. It was named in “allusion to a month in flight” and was discovered in 1882. Like sampaguita, it is also a national flower.

The Philippine eagle is the country’s bird icon, dislodging the maya which used to be the national bird. A pair of Philippine eagle needs at least 7,000 to 13,000 hectares of forest as a nesting territory.
