he Department of Education (DepEd) in Davao Region lauded the new teachers who hurdled the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET), especially those who landed in the top places.

“We are happy and our congratulations go to the educational institutions who molded them and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) for this policy of professionalizing the teachers,” said Jenielito Atillo, spokesperson of DepEd-11 in a phone interview on Sunday.

awyer Ferdinand Topacio on Monday asked the Supreme Court to investigate of�icials of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines for allowing Peter Joemel Advincula, alias “Bikoy”, to hold a press brie�ing at the group’s national headquarters.

In a letter to Chief Justice Lucas Bersamin, Topacio said Advincula’s press brie�ing last May 6 at the IBP of�ices undermined the organization.

“Much damage has been done to the IBP, as well as to the legal profession in general hence, the of�icers responsible for this reprehensible event should be investigated and held accountable,” he said.

In the LET for secondary level, 19 from Davao Region are in the 10 top placers.

Overall, there were only 19,659 or 27.28 percent of the 72,054 who took the LET for elementary level passed.

In the secondary level, there were 22,271 or 25.95 percent of those who took the LET passed.

Atillo reminded the new teachers that teaching does not only require intelligence but emotional quotient, because they are dealing with children.

“It is dif�icult to be a teacher. Children are very delicate population,” he said.

Asked if there are possible vacancies for new teachers, Atillo said there are, among others, new items approved by the Department of Budget and Management.

Afan added that cadets could be reported for not submitting their assignments on time or not coming to class on time, which offenses are in the cadets’ book, and considered less grave offenses.

“It is the cadets’ bible that de�ines how to live in the cadet corps from the moment they wake up until the moment they sleep there is always a regulation,” the of�icer said.

Afan said that the two cadets reported to have been delisted from the graduates’ list are not included in the pardon issued.

PRRD pardons cadets facing minor punishments

resident Rodrigo Duterte on Sunday issued an order giving pardon to cadets who are facing punishments.

“I therefore say, I Rodrigo Roa Duterte, President of the Republic of the Philippines and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines hereby pardon all outstanding punishments for the underclassmen — 2CL (second class), 3CL and 4CL of the Cadet Corps Armed Forces of the Philippines (CCAFP) as recommended by the Superintendent effective today, May 26,” the President said in his speech during the graduation ceremony of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Mabalasik Class of 2019.

The order will include

4th class cadets only.

Grave offenses are different matters and are not included in the pardon that the President issued.

“That is Honor Code, an entirely separate entity and is not included,” Afan said.

He said cadets commit violations on two bases -regulation and the honor system.

Prior to signing the order, the President said he “will pardon you this time because I need good and capable soldiers.”

Duterte was guest of honor and speaker during the graduation ceremonies on Sunday where 261 cadets were conferred the ranks of Second Lieutenant for those joining the Army and the Air Force and Ensign for those going to the Navy. (PNA)

Duterte tells PMA Mabalasik Class: Serve your country well

P

resident Rodrigo Roa Duterte on Sunday, May 26, led the commencement exercises of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA), telling the young military of�icers to do their job well protecting the motherland and to sacri�ice their lives if the situation calls for it.

“Serve your country well. Die for your country if it needs be.

Remember the young Filipinos yet to come, the children and those who are now studying.

Huwag mong kalimutan ‘yan,” President Duterte told PMA’s Mabalasik Class 2019 during the commencement rites at Fort General Gregorio Del Pilar, Baguio City.

“And if you think that the country is not run the way it is and if it will destroy your country, you should know what to do,” he said.

The President instructed the PMA graduates to always remain faithful to their mission, to be a good soldier serving the Constitution, and to protect the people.

They must also secure the country’s sovereignty and preserve the integrity of its national territory.

Bravery and loyalty must be the guiding principles for military of�icers, he stressed.

“I urge you...always embody courage and loyalty as you pursue your noble careers in the military. Let these

values be your beacon until your last taps are sung and your perpetual memory would be to see your country truly free,” he said.

Also, he expressed con�idence that with the PMA Mabalasik Class behind him, he can effectively build the foundations of a better, safer, and more peaceful life for all Filipinos.

As the Commander-In-Chief of the armed forces, President Duterte said he wants the young of�icers to instill in themselves the traits of being humble, teachable, grateful, and the ability to look at each other's back.

Today’s security landscape has changed drastically, the Chief Executive told the cadets. Security is no longer just about arms and equipment, he noted, adding that at this time, complex and irrational state and non-state actors may even pose danger to the country.

Church hails PRRD over Magna Carta of the Poor T he social action arm of the Archdiocese of Manila on Monday lauded President Rodrigo Duterte for signing the Magna Carta of the poor.

“We congratulate and support Pres. Duterte 100 percent in his bold signing of the Magna Carta for the poor,” said Fr. Anton Pascual, executive director of Caritas Manila in a statement.

“That’s what good government in public service is all about. Taking care of the poor and marginalized,” he added.

Pascual also expressed hope that concerned government agencies would immediately implement the law.

“We hope that the agencies of government have the time and resources to implement the Magna Carta. That is always the problem...ef�iciency and effect of government execution,” Pascual added.

On April 12, Duterte signed Republic Act 11291 also known as the Magna Carta of the Poor that aims to help less fortunate Filipinos meet their basic needs. It allows the underprivileged full access to government services.

Rasco said they discussed the status of several investment schemes and the actions taken by concerned government agencies to address them.

"We called the meeting to determine how to approach the problem because it's not a police matter alone," he said in a radio interview.

The police of�icial said they agreed to intensify monitoring and coordinate their actions, especially in terms of law enforcement. He said they will continually issue warnings and educate residents regarding the risks involving fraudulent investment schemes.

"We are focused on stopping these activities once and for all," Rasco said.

Among the matters discussed during the meeting were the latest updates regarding the

nearly PHP2-billion Pulis Paluwagan Movement (PPM), which victimized thousands of residents and police personnel here.

PPM, which offered monthly interest payouts of 120 percent, reportedly operated for some time at the city police headquarters here before it collapsed after several months of operation last February.

Rasco said at least 15 cases were already �iled against the alleged brains of the scam, which included several police of�icials and personnel.

Also discussed were the operations of several other investment schemes under different business names that are reportedly offering payouts of 30 to 400 percent per month.

These include the Kapa Community Ministry International Inc. and Alamco/Almamico.

But lawyer Armand Clarin, city legal of�icer, said they decided to shelve the discussions on

the operations of the Kapa Community Ministry International Inc. due to the ongoing legal proceedings.

He cited the writ of preliminary injunction issued by the Regional Trial Court Branch 35 here last month over the permanent cease and desist order issued by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) against the group.

Kapa, which is registered as a religious organization, was earlier �lagged

by SEC for reportedly accepting investments in the form of donations, promising a monthly interest of 30 percent.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) had ordered local government units to close down the of�ices of Kapa.

"Notwithstanding that there is an order from the DILG, there are also (pending) legal questions," Clarin said.

recent survey which showed that more Filipinos say their lives have improved is proof that President Rodrigo Duterte is de�initely doing his job, Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said on Sunday.

Andanar made this comment as he welcomed the �irst quarter 2019 Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey which found 38 percent of adult Filipinos have said their lives improved in the last 12 months.

The same survey also found 45 percent of adults were optimistic that the Philippine economy will improve in the next 12 months. “‘Yan ay nagpapakita naman na tama ang mga ginagawa ni Presidente — gumanda ang buhay, kumunti naghihirap (The survey shows that the President is doing something right -- their lives are improving, there are fewer poor),” said An-

Peso seen to remain firm vs. USD amid correction

T

he Philippine peso is projected to trade between 52.00 to 52.10 against the US dollar this week after its recent correction following a twoweek rally, Michael Ricafort, Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation (RCBC) Economics and Industry Research Division head, said.

The peso depreciated by PHP0.47 or 0.9 percent week-on-week against the greenback last week and closed at a two-week low of 52.16.

He explained that amid the peso’s slight weakness, several factors are seen to continue lifting it up, including the report of the government’s record-high

budget surplus last April amounting to PHP86.9 billion.

He said this particular factor is positive for the country’s credit rating, which received a notch upgrade to BBB+ with Stable outlook from S&P Global Ratings last April 30, after the credit rater noted the country’s "healthy external payments position, contained �iscal de�icits and stable public indebtedness”.

Another plus factor for the peso is the drop to two-month low of crude oil prices in the international market because of concerns on the US-China trade issues, which, in turn, also resulted in lower

inance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III has made an 11th-hour appeal to senators to speed up the approval of a new “sin” tax reform law that would further impose higher excise tax rates on alcohol and tobacco products to help �ill the massive funding gap for the Universal Health Care (UHC) program and ensure affordable and quality health care for every Filipino family starting next year.

Dominguez also urged senators in a recent meeting with them to continue pushing �iscal reforms in the incoming 18th Congress to give the Philippines “a good chance” of securing the much-coveted single “A” grade for the country’s long-term sovereign credit rating within two years.

A single “A” investment grade credit rating, Dominguez said, will not only bene�it the government and private sector investors through lower borrowing rates when they invest in projects for economic expansion, but will also mean ordinary Filipinos will also get to pay lower interest rates on their loans.

“All of these will translate into larger investments and more jobs for Filipino workers. So, you see, it is not just about getting an upgrade. It is about upgrading everyone’s life,” Dominguez said during his meeting with Senate President Vicente Sotto III and the other senators following last week’s resumption of

During that meeting at the Senate, Dominguez described the 17th Congress as “among the most productive and hardworking that I have ever seen.”

Davao Region schools have dominated the recent licensure examinations for teachers. Proof that academic institutions in the region are the country’s top producers of teachers. Credit that to the dedication and commitment of higher education institutions (HEIs) in keeping the highest standards of learning.

The Department of Education (DepEd) in Davao Region lauded the new teachers who hurdled the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET), especially those who landed in the top places.

The latest result of the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) released by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) on Saturday, majority of those in the top 15 of passers are from Davao Region.

Stephanie Apple M Piodo of Compostela Valley State CollegeMontevista, topped this year’s LET for elementary level with a rating of 93.29 percent while Honey Gracielle D. Baclayo of the University of Mindanao-Davao City topped the LET for secondary level with 93.40 percent rating. from Manila and the Visayas while in the secondary level, 19 are from Davao Region among the 10 top placers.

The LET exam is just as tough as other professional licensure examinations. In the latest results, only 19,659 or 27.28 percent of the 72,054 who took the LET for elementary level passed while 22,271 or 25.95 percent of those who took the LET secondary level exam passed.

Given the outstanding performance of Davao’s teaching aspirants, the next question is whether there are available teaching positions in the region that will commensurate this results. It is no secret that there is an oversupply of quali�ied teachers in Davao, as well as the rest of the country, but there is not enough teaching positions available in the job market. Hence, the imbalance.

Recent demands for teachers in the overseas markets offered new opportunities for new teachers. However, there still is a need to provide for adequate teaching positions which is also the solution to address another problem in Philippine education which is the imbalance in the teacher-to-student/pupil ratio.

QUIT OR DIE EARLY! I hate smoking – that’s why I don’t smoke! I am blessed because I live in a city where smoking is banned in all public places, including cemeteries.

People who come to the city are always advised not to smoke. “Welcome to Davao City. Please be reminded that smoking is strictly prohibited,” the �light stewardess always tells the plane passengers after landing. People who won’t heed the warning will be slapped with a hefty �ine.

Oftentimes, I hear smokers who say, “Our right to smoke is being curtailed here.”

Actually, there are areas where people can smoke. Some malls and bars have designated places where people can smoke. Or, they can smoke inside their homes.

Yes, people in Davao City observe Executive Order No. 26 religiously that most smokers puff their cigarettes in their homes. As a result, “household smokers” are increasing, according to the regional of�ice of the Department of Health.

In her banner story in EDGE Davao, our social media manager Leebai Sinsuat Ambolodto wrote: “Despite an aggressive regionwide an-

ti-smoking campaign, Davao City has seen an increase in the number of household smokers. Meaning, those individuals who avoid the smoking ban in public places and instead opt to just smoke at home – within their backyard.”

She got her information from Rosemarie Basañes, the regional tobacco control and prevention program manager of the health department, who disclosed it during the recent Usapang Kalusugan media forum.

The disclosure was disheartening. “Although often associated with ill-health, disability and death from noncommunicable chronic diseases, tobacco smoking is also associated with an increased risk of death from communicable diseases,” says the Geneva-based World Health Organization (WHO).

Several studies have shown that smoking kills but people still keep on doing the vice. Six million people around the world die every year from tobacco-related diseases, according to the United Nations health agency.

If current trends continue, WHO estimates that the toll will rise to 10 million by 2030 – one death every three sec-

onds! Some people contend that if the Philippines wants to control its population, it doesn’t need family planning anymore. All it needs to do is to allow more Filipinos to smoke.

Perhaps not too many Filipinos know that from 1950 to 2000, tobacco killed more than 60 million people in developed countries alone. The staggering statistics is more than those who died in World War II. Why so many deaths, you may wonder. “Tobacco is a known or probable cause of some 25 different diseases,” the UN health agency reminds. Among the major diseases, tobacco bring to people who smoke are lung cancer, bronchitis and emphysema.

Tobacco consumption has been explicitly linked to high incidence and gravity of cardiac disease.

Women who smoke, beware – especially if you are pregnant. “Maternal smoking is associated with a higher risk of miscarriage, lower birthweight of babies and inhibited child development,” WHO says.

You haven’t heard anything yet. “Parental smoking,” WHO says, “is also a factor

in sudden infant death syndrome and is associated with higher rates of respiratory illnesses, including bronchitis, colds and pneumonia in children.

“Tobacco is the only legal drug that kills many of its users when used exactly as intended by manufacturers,” WHO deplores.

If you haven’t started smoking yet, don’t try to try smoking. The reason: tobacco products are highly addictive. “Because tobacco products are carefully designed to undermine efforts to quit using them, quitting is not simply a matter of choice for the majority of tobacco users.

Instead, it involves a struggle to overcome an addiction,” WHO says.

Tobacco use typically is woven into everyday life, and can be physiologically, psychologically, and socially reinforcing. “Many factors combine with tobacco’s addictive capacity to make quitting dif�icult, including media depictions and cultural and societal acceptance of tobacco use,” WHO says.

Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland, former WHO director-general, understands the situation well. “Giving

up smoking is not easy,” she said. “We know that nicotine is powerfully addictive, and all of us know people who have tried to give up smoking, only to �ind themselves drawn back to it a few months later.”

It doesn’t mean, however, that you cannot quit smoking.

It takes more than courage and will. “Quitting tobacco at any point in life provides both immediate bene�its and substantial long-term bene�its to health,” WHO reminds. “No amount of tobacco use is safe.

“Abstinence from tobacco products and freedom from exposure to second-hand smoke are necessary for maximizing health and minimizing risk,” WHO says.

“Effective treatment for tobacco dependence can signi�icantly improve overall public health within only a few years.

Tobacco not only kills people; it also saps national treasuries. A World Bank study, “The Economic Costs and Bene�its of Investing in Tobacco,” has estimated that the use of tobacco results in a global net loss of US$200 billion per year, with half of these losses occurring in the developing world.

Now, you know why I hate smoking!

BUDGET DELAYS AND UNDERSPENDING HURT OUR GROWTH The 5.6% growth for the �irst quarter of 2019 came as no shock. Lower than expected, this �igure needs to be addressed if our growth is to keep up with our targets.

This is thanks but no thanks to a wrangling congress that delayed budget deliberations over supposed pork barrel insertions that the President vetoed anyway.

Had these been cut out in the �irst place, the budget could have been approved sooner.

Thus, working on a reenacted budget means having to spend less- around 1 billion pesos per day during the �irst quarter did set our growth back.

In a statement, the Philippine Department of Finance, thorough Secretary Carlos Dominguez makes it clear: “By our estimates, the Philippine economy should have grown by at least one

percentage point higher, at 6.6 to 7.2 percent in the �irst quarter, if the 2019 �iscal program had been approved on time. This is no surprise as national government spending accounts for around 20 percent of the economy.”

With this in mind, the only way to meet the stated growth target for the year of between 6.8-7.2% is to spur economic activity. Its time to boost and catch up.

Already, a number of good moves are in place.

The �irst, the cut in interest rates and the lowering of reserve requirements for banks especially in the midsize and thrift banks subsector will allow them to lend more to fund business expansion or drive consumption.

Expect more people to borrow from banks, and faster loan approvals. Banks generate their income by lending.

Lower in�lation, which

is now at about 3% is also a blessing since lower prices allow people to spend less for higher volumes of products which in turn, drives production, spurs enterprise and thus expands employment.

But a quicker way to raise economic growth is to boost spending of the recently approved budget. Note that 20% of our growth is attributed to public spending.

We have now seen its effect on our growth.

This will require fasttracking infrastructure to make up for lower spending in the �irst quarter resulting from both the budget delay and the election ban on public works.

The biggest hurdle is the bureaucracy that tends to be slow in implementation.

Technology ought to help solve that by allowing us taxpayers to monitor the pace of implementation.

On top of that however, there are vital items that require spending, such as the safety nets that includes the rice competetitveness fund under the Rice Tarri�ication Law, free state education, the hiring of more teachers to �ill up the newly built classrooms, for example.

These new hires come from increased plantilla positions that can only come into full effect under a new General Appropriations act.

Reenacted budgets will delay the hiring.

The worst impact is on the poor, that can only be uplifted from government services. The recently approved 4Ps law ought to alleviate poverty and drive consumption in the rural areas that in turn, will spur economic activity. Note that majority of the 4Ps bene�iciaries live in remote areas.

Other vital expenditures will be needed to boost

growth, especially in the regions.

Infrastructure, for one.

Addressing the long infrastructure neglect of the regions is now underway. What we need to do now is monitor implementstion of all the launched projects.

Check out the Department of Public Works and Highways and Department of Transportation websites and social media pages to see how well these projects are implemented and deployed.

Signups for MinPop Bootcamp Davao start May 25

WITH more musicians and songwriters rising up from Mindanao, plans for setting up the 1st Mindanao Popular Music Festival (MInPop) are now underway. As an opening salvo to the upcoming musical event in the region, a series of free songwriting workshops in select Mindanao areas will form part of the promotional activities.

In relation to this, the first leg of the MinPop Bootcamp will be held in Davao at Muzic’s Kool on June 15, 2019 from 1:00 – 5:00 PM. The application process for the Davao songwriting bootcamp will start on May 25, 2019 (Saturday).

Interested applicants to MinPop Bootcamp Davao need to prepare a two-minute video wherein they need to answer the question, “why should you become part of the MinPop Bootcamp?” (1 minute).

They should also include a video performance of their original work or a cover of an OPM song (1 minute).

To apply for MinPop Bootcamp Davao, visit the MinPop website at minpop.com.ph starting May 25, and fill up the online application form. The video will be uploaded on the page as well.

Deadline for submission of application is on June 5, 2019, 11:59 PM. Fifty slots will be opened for interested participants. Announcement of the final 50 participants will be released on June 10, 2019 through the MinPop Facebook page (facebook.com/MindanaoPop).

Through the workshops, participants can expect to receive basic to intermediate knowledge on the various approaches to songwriting. Lectures and training modules on useful tools and techniques in songwriting will also be shared during the bootcamp.

Globe Telecom promotes digital inclusion for residents in remote island of Antique

ver 19,000 residents of Semirara Island in Caluya, Antique now have access to better mobile connectivity, digital applications, and cyber wellness training, as Globe and its partners promote digital inclusion in the remote island community.

Almost an hour �light from Manila, Semirara Island has an area of 55 square kilometers and home to the country’s richest coal reserves. Most of the workers and their families residing in the island are from nearby provinces of Mindanao. Mobile connectivity and digital applications are indispensable in their way of life.

Globe collaborated with the largest coal producer in the Philippines, Semirara Mining and Power Corporation (SMPC), and the local government unit to digitally transform the island.

“Digital inclusion is a huge undertaking because it requires cooperation from a broad set of stakeholders - private enterprises, local residents, and local government. We are happy that the stakeholders have given their support so we can bring about change that would eventually result to a more progressive island community,” said Globe President and CEO Ernest Cu.

Firing up LTE To improve voice and video communication, Globe teamed up with SMPC to upgrade all cell towers in the island with LTE technology. Russian former world champ holds Mad Wave swim camp

Having one of the best in the �ield as a mentor is perhaps a once in a lifetime privilege.

Just like these 75 tankers who got a rare chance to train with a Russian swimming Olympian in a week-long Mad Wave Swim Camp which began last March 25 at the Davao Del Norte Sports and Tourism Complex Olympic-sized swimming pool.

The camp is organized

by Mad Wave swimming apparel owner and swimming enthusiast Ronnie Vibar who invited Vladimir Viktorvich Predkin, an honored master of sports of Russia and an Olympic Games silver medalist.

Predkin is a silver and bronze medalist in the World Championships, and a �ive-time European champion. He is also a 13time world champion, and a multiple champion and the current record holder in his category in Russia.

Among his achievements in the sport includes

a bronze medal in the prestigious Goodwill Games.

This camp aims to bring a unique training program that features the technicalities of the sport, improvement of swimming techniques, skills development, and a glimpse of a Russian way of swimming.

The camp is devoted for aspiring swimmers ages 10-18 years old.

Participants came all the way from Cabanatuan City, Valencia City, Bukidnon, Digos City, Nabunturan Province, Butuan City, Tagum City, Tagbilaran City, Bohol, Kidapawan City, Iloilo City, Zamboanga City, Bacolod City and Davao Region for this �irst-ever in the entire Asia.

Davao City’s young and seasoned swimmers Eirron Vibar and Paolo Miguel Labanon, who won medals in the 2019 Palarong Pambansa and National Private School Athletic Association were among the participants.

This camp is in partnership with the Provincial Government of Davao Del Norte.

200 kids in Bangkal Parish Davao Children’s Games A round 200 young children participated in the 3rd Children’s Games at the Our Lady of Lourdes Parish at Central Park in Bangkal, this city, on Sunday.

Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman William “Butch” Ramirez said it was his �irst time to join the pa-

rade since the Children’s Games was revived in May 2017.

“This is my �irst time to march after all several Children’s Games we conducted for about 18,000 kids, we already lost count because I’m also from here and I just live nearby,” Ramirez said.

He thanked Fr. Toto

Espana for caring for the welfare of the youth.

He then told young participants that the Children’s Games is for everybody -- rich or poor.

“There’s no native, Christians nor Muslims since we are all Filipinos, we are one,” he added.

In his interaction with the children, Ramirez en-

couraged them to make new friends among them.

The children played different traditional games during the one-day event.

Participants will play different Pinoy games.

“Ang importante makadula sila (It’s important that the kids get to play),” PSC Mindanao cluster head Ed Fernandez said.(PNA)

SID UNGAB CITES MAYOR INDAY’S HELP; AFTER PALARO, PRISAA, WHAT’S NEXT? BIMP-EAGA GAMES PERHAPS? Davao City has made its mark by hosting not only one but two national sports events.

First, the Palarong Pambansa and second, the National Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) Championships.

Congressman Sid Ungab cited the big, big support of Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte who helped his team speed up things even at a time when is out of public of�ice. Sid just recently came back as elected Congressman, representing the third district of the city where the Davao City-UP Mindanao Sports Complex is located.

“I am the happiest man alive

today, having witnessed the story of this Sports Complex from inception to what it is today,” the Congressman told Edge Davao.

“Special thanks to Mayor Sara who helped us speed up things even when I’m already out of of�ice,” he said.

Actually, before the Palarong Pambansa, the sports facility was already tested when it hosted the Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) Meet.

Coach Erwin Protacio, our classmate in the Asean Football Confederation (AFC) Administration Course many moons ago, helped then private citizen Sid

Ungab as part of the organizing team and made sure, among other things, that the football �ield is up to AFC standards.

Davao City under the watch of Mayor Inday is now in our “sports history book” that it has met all the requirements for hosting a national sports event and successfully hosted it. Congratulations Mayor Inday and team!

We would like also to cite the hard work of the local government unit staff, UP Mindanao, private sector volunteers for the success of the two national sports events specially assistance from the Philippine Sports Commission though

its Board headed by Chairman William “Butch” Ramirez.

Now the question is what’s next?

In 1996, Dr.Mauro Puyod and his fellow Davao All-Terrain Bikers Association (Datba) of�icials like Ed Leuenberger and Alex Marfori organized the �irst BIMP-EAGA Mountain Bike event in Samal.

I was just imagining that probably someday, the BIMP-EAGA Friendship Games can be hosted by the City of Davao.

During the presidency of Fidel V. Ramos, the Brunei-Indone-

sia-Malaysia East Asian Growth Area was actively promoted and sports was part of its trade relation component.

Gen.Santos City �irst hosted the BIMP-EAGA Games and the next Games, held every two years, were hosted by the other countries.

Now that we have a sports complex, it seems that a BIMP-EAGA event in the near future can be considered.

Teams from Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia will for sure be excited to come to Davao City once again.

abawenyo Olympian and World Para Swimming Series silver medalist Ernie Gawilan will headline the athletes competing in the 7th Philippine National Para Games as hostilities formally reeled off Monday at the Bulacan Sports Complex.

Table tennis Paralympic bronze medalist Josephine Medina is also seeing action in the four-day meet showcasing the country’s �inest athletes with disability.

Over 1,010 para athletes from 72 various local government units will participate in the four-day tournament featuring archery, para athletics, para swimming, chess, judo, table tennis, boccia, para powerlifting, goalball, sitting volleyball, badminton, tenpin bowling, and wheelchair basketball.

Cycling is a demo sport.

In the opening ceremonies held on Sunday, PSC Chairman William Ramirez inspired the para athletes to go beyond their dreams, and use sports as an instrument of change.

“It is always a special moment for me to see our para athletes �lourish in the sport

that they love and discover the golden gift in them,” added the agency chief. He graced the opening together with PSC Commissioner Arnold Agustin and Philippine Paralympic Committee President Mike Barredo.

Meanwhile, Bulacan Governor Wilhelmino Sy-Alvarado thanked the PPC and PSC for choosing the province as host of the national games saying “the province of Bulacan is grateful to the PPC and PSC for giving us the opportunity to host this sporting event for our para athletes. Throughout the games, we would like to show everyone that our venues are completely differently-abled friendly.”

Simultaneous games start today at the Bulacan Sports Complex (archery, para athletics and para swimming), Hiyas Convention (chess, judo, table tennis and boccia), Bulacan Capitol Gym (goalball and sitting volleyball), City Walk Badminton Court (Badminton), Paradise Bowling Center (tenpin bowling) and at Guiguinto Municipal Athletic & Cultural Center (wheelchair basketball).
