Davao City reinforces reproductive health program

T

he Davao City government is looking to intensify its reproductive health program, particularly on Family Planning to allow Dabawenyos to provide the best care to their children.

Family planning is one of the successful health programs of the city in terms of drawing support from the fami-

lies. This was even noted by Mayor Inday Sara Duterte, who bared there were more and more females availing of the free

services from only 15 in 2016 to 226 in 2018.

Even with its success, the city government through the City Health Of�ice-Population Division continues to be pro-active in implementing and advocating the bene�its of family planning.

used by Dabawenyos is Implanon, a new form of birth control that could prevent pregnancy for up to three years.

Compared to the same period last year, there is a 18% decline in the number of cases reported.

nly 1.68 million votes remain for canvassing before the of�icial 2019 midterm elections results are out, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said Sunday.

"The remaining votes to be canvassed is 1,683,938 for Isabela, Japan, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, United States and Nigeria," said Frances Arabe, assistant director at the Comelec Education and Information Department, in a press brie�ing.

As of 7:18 p.m Sunday., the Comelec en banc, sitting as the National Board of Canvassers, has tabulated 162 out of the total 167 COCs. The last to be canvassed before the session was suspended for Monday was the COC from Zamboanga del Sur. The NBOC expects the remaining COCs from Isabela, Japan, US, Nigeria, and Saudi Arabia transmitted

“We have a schoolbased immunization routine during August of every year”, Montejo added. Further, Montejo pointed that, aside from immunization, their agency is also continuing health education in terms of promoting the importance of vaccination.

This August, Grades 1 and 7 students will be given measles and tetanus shots. For Grades 2, 3, 5 and 6 students, measles shots will be given while Grade 4 students will be given both measles and

HPV shots. This is applicable to all public schools of Region 11.

“Both the national and local agency has their own target. For us, Region 11, we have achieved a 72% vaccination target”, Montejo added. And this can be credited to the agency’s information dissemination drive.

Asked about the availability of vaccines, Montejo said that they cannot give the exact �igure but the agency already received its full allocation from the national of�ice. “Should there be additional vaccines needed, we can always request”, she added.

Group asks councilors to junk WTE project

A

n environment group urged the newly elected city councilors to �ind means of addressing the garbage problem other than adopting the waste-to-energy (WTE) project.

Mary Ann Fuentes, managing trustee of Interface Development Interventions (IDIS) said in an interview Monday the WTE technology is not the “long-term and most effective solution.”

Fuentes said the city council should thoroughly study the proposed project, which, although deemed as the easiest way to address the problem on solid waste is unsustainable in the long term.

She said environmentalists recognized the city’s waste disposal problem and that the seven-hectare sanitary land�ill in New Carmen, Tugbok, has nearly reached its limit.

But she added that “for us, a solution to environmental issues should not necessarily have to be the easiest in terms of implementation. That’s not usually the long-term and most effective solution.”

Go dispels rumors on PRRD’s hospitalization with photos

o dispel rumors on President Rodrigo R. Duterte’s alleged hospitalization, former Special Assistant to the President (SAP) Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go shared photos of himself sharing a meal with the Chief Executive.

Go said the photos were taken at the Bahay ng Pagbabago, formerly called Bahay Pangarap, the President’s residence in Malacañan Palace.

His photos show Duterte reading newspapers dated Sunday, May 19 and sharing what appeared to be “palabok” and a sandwich.

Earlier, rumors that the President was rushed to the Cardinal Santos Medical Center in San Juan surfaced on social media following the President’s week-long absence from public eye.

She expressed fears that pushing through with the WTE scheme might result in more environmental problems.

She said the WTE facility would require large volumes of wastes to produce energy, encouraging consumers to produce more wastes, and resulting in the release of air pollutants.

Even as the proponents of the WTE project claimed that it has worked for Japan, Fuertes said the Japanese government is noted for its strict environmental monitoring, and the maintenance and operation of this technol-

ogy would be costly to the local government.

She said the waste problem is “everyone’s concern” and urged consumers to forego single-use plastics and other throwaway items to reduce trash.

“Let us capitalize on what is the long term solution. We need to change our lifestyle so that everybody will be happy. It’s only a matter of discipline and will,” she said.

total of 40 Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) drivers were apprehended for lack of driver's identi�ication (ID) cards during the crackdown operation against fake ID conducted by Davao City Traf�ic Transportation Management Of�ice (CTTMO) which formally started on Friday, May 17.

City Traf�ic Chief Dionisio Abude told Edge Davao that there were no fake ID users were reportedly apprehended since Friday but drivers without IDs were mostly caught during the operation.

Abude said CTTMO traf�ic enforcers �lagged down public utility jeepneys to check on the authenticity of their Driver's IDs. He said the they scanned the QR codes on the IDs to check if these were the same ones that

the city government had issued.

Once the ID matches the details of the QR code on �ile, the drivers were immediately cleared and were allowed to proceed to their travel.

He said those drivers caught without IDs will be �ined with P1,000 while fake ID users will be jailed for falsi�ication of a public document.

Abude, however, said that this move is driven

by Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio and will continue to go after drivers using fake IDs in the city.

Abude, meanwhile, said the move basically aims to stop drivers who are possessing or using drivers’ IDs not their own.

n response to Commission on Higher Education CHED Memorandum Order (CMO) No. 1 s. 2019, the Al Qalam Institute for Islamic Identities and Dialogue in Southeast Asia of the Ateneo de Davao University and the Salaam Movement will launch its SALAAM: Spirituality of Service Peace Education Module as the highlight of the Salaam National Conference on May 23-24, 2019 at Ateneo de Davao University, Davao City.

The said CMO released last April 2, 2019 mandates the Integration of Peace Studies/Education into the Relevant Existing Tertiary Curricula. The module to be launched is proposed to be integrated in the National Service Training Program (NSTP). It was developed

through a year-long process by the Salaam Movement’s Technical Working Group (TWG) on Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (PCVE) which is composed of School Administrators and Peace Educators from different public and private academic institutions in the Philippines.

Almost a hundred School Administrators and NSTP Coordinators from different Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and State Universities and Colleges (WCs) in the country are expected to take part in this conference.

Plenary Sessions will feature the salient components of the module and an exhibit of the best practices of Salaam Movement and the institute will also be launched during the event.

Economic expansion drives utility’s growth

T

he AboitizPower-led Davao Light and Power Co. (Davao Light) sees bright prospects in its franchise area in the next three to �ive years as robust economic growth continues to spread across the country.

Davao Light forecasts to grow its peak demand from 421 MW in 2018 to 546 MW by 2023, which the distribution utility attributes to the growth in real estate businesses, sprouting huge universities, commercial complexes, and business process outsourcing of�ices.

Apart from this, Davao posted an impressive double-digit economic growth of 10.9 percent in 2017, the highest in the region’s history, which can be attributed to the positive performance of the service and industry sectors.

“We expect to serve more customers from these industries this year, especially in light of the government’s Build, Build, Build program. The con-

struction boom in the city is a win-win for all sectors,” said Davao Light Director, President, and Chief Operating Of�icer Rodger S. Velasco.

Among the utility’s big customers coming in between 2019 and 2021 are several residential buildings, a hotel, a business park, a multipurpose indoor arena, a factory, and schools.

For this year alone, Davao Light’s franchise area will welcome two manufacturers, a mall, a food complex, a business park, and real estate development.

The utility also sees an increase in annual MWh sales from 2,468,191 MWh in 2018 to 3,137,336 MWh in �ive years. By 2023,

Davao Light also estimates to grow its customer base to 504,911 customers from 404,574 last year.

To keep up with the development within the respective franchise areas of its utilities, AboitizPower has set aside P3.1 billion in 2019 to modernize its existing distribution assets across the country in the next few years.

“We want to take advantage of the robust economic growth in our franchise areas by making sure power is delivered to our customers reliably, sustainably, and at the most cost-effective way.

The initiatives we have mapped out for this year and beyond are part of our effort to become worldclass and the best at what we do,” said Jaime Jose Y. Aboitiz, EVP and COO of the AboitizPower Distribution Group.

Part of this modernization program is the construction of facilities

in Davao Light’s franchise area that will add 424 MVA in transformation capacity, further improving network ef�iciency and reliability.

The Davao-based utility is also set to string a total of 228 circuit kilometers of combined sub-transmission and backbone distribution lines to reinforce the existing system. To help improve its ef�iciency, Davao Light will also implement distribution automation and its advanced distribution management system.

In terms of reliability, Davao Light reduced the average duration of power interruptions a customer experiences in a year from 315 minutes in 2017 to 301 minutes in 2018, which can be attributed to faster response time on the utility’s end. However, the average number of interruptions a customer experiences increased from 4.4 in 2017 to 5.2 in 2018,

he EcoWaste Coalition, an environmental and health watch group, reminded participants of the week-long Brigada Eskwela starting May 20 to ensure that school cleanup, repair and renovation activities are done in an eco-friendly manner.

“We laud the yearly conduct of the DepEd-led Brigada Eskwela, which is an excellent expression of the timeless Filipino bayanihan spirit,” said Thony Dizon, Chemical Safety Campaigner, EcoWaste Coalition.

f�icials of the departments of agriculture, health, science and technology, and trade and industry are set to meet on Monday to address reports that “fake” vinegar products using the synthetic acetic acid are being sold in the market.

Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel “Manny” Piñol said on his Facebook post Saturday that the meeting is an offshoot of a study conducted by the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI), an agency of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), which showed that many commercial vinegar brands use synthetic acetic acid in producing the popular Filipino condiment.

A news item posted by scitechanddigital.news said a study made by the DOST has established that of the 17 vinegar brands tested in the Philippines, most of them were made from “synthetic” --and not from natural -- sources, making them fake and adulterated and therefore dangerous to people’s health.

The report further said that only three brands passed the PNRI’s nuclear-based analysis while 15 brands were manufactured using synthetic acetic acid, which is a raw material for making vinyl, among other products. Synthetic acetic acid is a by-product of petrochemicals.

However, the PNRI did not identify these brands, citing that naming them is against the law. Moreover,

the tests were done using only codes for the products bought from across the country.

Since it is not in PNRI’s mandate to issue advisories on matters of food safety, Piñol said his department, through the Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Standards, will initiate a move to establish standards of vinegar, an agricultural product.

“The DA (Department of Agriculture) will also of�icially ask DOST-PNRI to submit the list of vinegar brands using acetic acid and passing these off as natural vinegar, which then will be referred to the DOH (Department of Health), which has supervision over the Food and Drug Administration (FDA),” he said.

The agriculture chief further said that his position on the issue is that pending the FDA’s validation of the PNRI study, “an advisory should be issued and the brands using acetic acid must be pulled out of the market.”

This is where the Department of Trade and Industry comes in, as it has the mandate to monitor products sold in the market, Piñol said.

Pending the results of the meeting, consumers are advised to exercise caution and discernment in buying vinegar from commercial establishments.

DOF, DOH to make final push for higher sin taxes

T

he Departments of Finance (DOF) and of Health (DOH) are making a �inal push for the outgoing Congress to further raise ‘sin’ taxes on tobacco and alcohol to close a cumulative funding gap estimated at around P426 billion over the next �ive years for the full and proper implementation of the Universal Health Care (UHC) program.

Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III said at a joint press brie�ing with Health Secretary Francisco Duque III that the approval by the 17th Congress of higher excise taxes on tobacco and alcohol products will provide the government with the means to curb vices and undesirable behavior, while at the same time generate the revenues necessary to fully fund the UHC, which will require as much as P1.44 trillion combined from 2020 to 2024.

President Duterte signed the UHC program into law last February to ensure a better, healthier life for Filipinos, which is in step with his agenda to build a healthier nation and improve living standards nationwide.

But government funds are not enough to ful�ill the �inancing requirements beginning 2020. Thus, the urgent need for the Congress to write a new “sin” tax reform law.

Dominguez said that from 2020 to 2024, all current sources of government funding can cover UHC at around P200 billion annually, while the cost of the program will continue to grow to as much as P1.44 trillion during the same period.

In 2020—the �irst year of UHC’s implementation—the program is estimated to cost P258 billion, which the government can cover from its current funding sources from the national budget, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (PAGCOR) and the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Of�ice (PCSO) in the amount of P195 billion. Without “sin” tax reform, UHC will be

EDITORIAL How about an Anti-Fake News Law? Netizens were rocked anew by posts on social media on Sunday that President Rodrigo Duterte was rushed to Cardinal Santos Hospital due to cardiac arrest. The post, obviously unveri�ied and without a clear source, was later debunked by photographs posted by the President’s trusted aide and Senator-in-waiting Christopher “Bong” Go. This is not the �irst time that news of the President’s health was spread around.

Is it time to make spreading and sharing fake news a crime?

Last May 8, 2019, Singapore passed the Protection from Online Falsehood and Manipulation Act (POFMA) 2019 or their equivalent of what looks like a “Fake News Law.” The news was met with mixed reactions from within Singapore and the international audience. Brickbats and bouquets came its way. But Singapore didn’t care. It needed to act against the growing problem of misinformation.

The Singaporean lawmakers enacted POFMA for four main reasons. Firstly, to prevent the communication of false statements of fact and enable measures to counteract the effects of such communication. Secondly, to supress the �inancing, promotion and support of online locations in Singapore that repeatedly communicate false statements of facts. Thirdly, to enable measures to be taken to detect, control and safeguard against coordinated inauthentic behaviour and other misuse of online accounts and bots. And lastly, to enable measures to be taken to enhance the disclosure of information concerning paid content directed towards a political end.

It is interesting how Singapore’s POFMA works. Article 7, Part 2 of the act states that a piece of news is deemed to be fake and worthy of action if and only if it meets two criteria.

Firstly, it should be a false statement of fact. And secondly, communication of this false

news is likely to affect the security of Singapore or be prejudicial to public health, safety, tranquillity or �inances or be prejudicial to Singapore’s relations with other countries or in�luence the outcome of elections or incite feelings of hatred, enmity/ ill will or diminish public con�idence in the state or its institutions. Article 10 of Part 3 of the act makes any Minister or the equivalent of a cabinet secretary in Philippine setting in the Singapore government competent to classify news as fake and take appropriate action to deal with such news.

Article 11 of Part 3 concerns communicating a “Correction Direction”. A Correction Direction can be issued to a person to communicate a Correction Notice (Statement nullifying a false information and inserting a corresponding true statement and/or its link next to the false statement) within a speci�ied time limit to all persons who have received the false information and/or publish the correction notice in a newspaper or other print publications of Singapore. Article 12 of Part 3 empowers the Competent Authority to issue a “Stop Communication” direction, and Article 16 of Part 3 empowers the Minister to direct the Information Communication Media Development Authority (IMDA) which could be the equivalent of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to order the internet access service provider to disable access to an online location for all end users by issuing an “Access Blocking Order”.

Indeed, it is important not only to classify a piece of information or news being spread on cyberspace as genuine or fake but also for the authorities to do something about it and put a stop to this culture of misinformation, prank and messages of hate.

Perhaps this could be among the priority agenda of the next Congress.

DAVAO STRENGTHENS AS A POLITICAL CAPITAL AND INVESTMENT DESTINATION The victory of Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP) was indeed unprecedented as practically all the candidates it has campaigned for won Senate seats, giving the president an unprecedented majority in the upper chamber. Add to that the fact that less than 30 opposition solons won in the lower house, and the supermajority is clear.

HNP served as the administration alliance putting together several political parties such as the Nacionalista Party, Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino, PDP Laban along with some independent candidates.

A few things are worth noting: Never has a regional party won a senate seat.

Never has a regional party therefore played a pivotal role in a national election.

Past regional parties such as the Pusyon Bisaya, Bicol Saro and the like functioned as local allies of national political parties, never campaigning beyond their home turf.

This makes HNPs victory a historic one.

Another historic outcome of these elections are the election of two senatos from the Davao region, Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go and Ronald “Bato del a Rosa. They will be the �irst since Alejandro Almendras last won in 1971, giving the politically important Davao region its rightful place in national governance.

This makes Davao the political capital of southern Philippines.

This also re�lects the fact that the davao region is an economic powerhouse for the country. Its 8.6% growth is nothing to laugh at when you consider that Metro manila can only manage 4.9% and the country about 6%. This Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) mirrors impressive 3.5% unemployment, making any business grow. The growing Davao Skyline will be pepered with high rise buildings and sprawling commercial complexes providing venues for trade and employment.

There is a need to continue pushing tis growth.

For this reason, the Davao City Chamber of Commerce has organized the Davao investment conference on June 20-21 at the SMX Convention Center.

This hopes to bring even more delegates than the 2017 edition, and a higher interest in the Davao region as an investment destination in Southeast Asia. About a hundred foreign delegates are expected to meet up with local businesses to partner for growth.

macists Association, Youth For Christ International Conference and many other events saw popular venues booked months ahead.

This summer saw the heaviest use of our Davao International Airport. Often the check in area is full and so is the pre departure areas especially when �lights are delayed.

Knowing this, we really need to expand our airport given the possible increase in local and international �lights from Singapore and Hong Kong, a possible increase in �lights from Jinjiang China and the coming �light from Doha Qatar. Other direct �lights are being worked out.

1984 BATASAN PRE-ELECTION IN DAVAO Scheduled on May 14, 1984, the regular Batasang Pambansa polls were the �irst electoral exercise held under Martial Law. In Davao, a political stronghold of Kilusang Bagong Lipunan (KBL), the administration’s party, press interest in partisan events was particularly euphoric.

Hogging the headlines, for one, was the March 12, 1984 ‘secret’ Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) meeting at the Tadeco clubhouse in Panabo, owned by KBL chairman Antonio O. Floirendo, who admitted the conference had nothing to do with the Batasan elections.

To douse cold water on what eventually became a hot media item, Pedro L. Ocampo, revenue district of�icer of Tagum and brother of then Davao del Sur governor Primo L. Ocampo, disclosed in the phone interview that the Tadeco meeting was held in the absence of any Floirendo invitation, adding the conference was a way of “recognizing big taxpayers” and “changing atmosphere” given the bu-

reau’s intense tax collection drive.

Citing Ocampo’s statement, the Tadeco clubhouse gathering was joined by senior BIR of�icers in Region XI, regional director Alfonso Camillo, revenue district of�icers and regional staff.

The propriety of the BIR meeting inside a private property owned by the Floirendo was �irst questioned by Davao provincial board member Roland Marcial, who was running for a legislative slot in the Batasan elections as an opposition.

Commission on Elections (COMELEC) regional director Resurreccion Borra (later promoted to commissioner), who was not entirely impartial in his deals with the KBL, was quick to respond that the meeting, dubbed by some as “herding,” was not secret and apolitical given the issues discussed in the conference were about ‘Sariling Sikap’ program, peace and order, and voters’ registration.

of�ices (now dubbed as Association of Regional Executives of National Agencies or ARENA) in Davao Region, Borra issued a statement, published in the April 25, 1984 issue of People’s Daily Forum, a local paper, saying: “[D]uring the meeting I was present, not only as head of the regional group of national of�ices but likewise as regional director of the Commission on Elections,” adding as director of the electoral body he “should always attend meetings involving voting and registration.”

But in those days, Borra, arguably the longest-seating Comelec director, was perceived pejoratively as a lapdog of Floirendo, a close family friend of the Marcoses. His stint as regional electoral chief was under question after results for the Batasan Pambansa from South Cotabato, then under Region XI and was part of his jurisdiction, delivered a zero vote for the opposition! Bloc voting was blamed for the unusual outcome, which affected the results of the elections.

Twelve days after the consultation, the voter’s registration elicited an observation from the same publication. In one of its editorial, titled ‘A Good Sign,’ the paper focused on the unusually high number of voters, which was indicative of the failure of the boycott campaign: “[The April 24, 1984] registration of voters was heavy by all standards.

Earlier fears that few people would turn out to enlist for the May 14 elections and all other subsequent elections proved to be without any basis after all.

“The heavy turnout, considered beyond initial expectations, is a clear indication that the boycott movement is slowly dying out in favor of full participation by those who are against the national leadership.

“The various opposition groups, by their collective act of registering for the elections, have more than convinced the rest of the country that they are willing to do their share in the move for national reconciliation.

“The people themselves are taking part now in political exercises. Their decision to participate in the elections will go a long way in promoting national unity.”

But there were also reports of ‘�lying’ voters. A person who called himself the ‘engineer,’ the paper’s next-day edition reported, claimed that he recruited seven jeeploads of people from the squatter colony of Quezon Boulevard, Davao City, for registration in Santa Cruz, Davao del Sur, about 35 kms south of the city.

A nameless informer, in con�irming the incident, said the recruiter promised him free snack, meal, transport, and P100 should he accept the invitation to be a ‘�lying voter.’

The malpractice has since been �ine-tuned over the years by politicians and their tacticians and have since become part of Filipino electoral practices. Today, vote-buying and �ly-voting have de�ined, albeit negatively, the results of national and local politics.

Coming home to a

NEW DAHICAN THE WINDS start picking up, it starts slowly and then matures into an almost never-ending gush of strong winds.

You’d be blessed if you could still score a few more waves after lunch, often times, the afternoons in Dahican are exercises in finding creatives ways to spend time.

It usually begins in March when the winds pick up. It signals the end of the surf season and the start of a waveless summer. There are still cute waves to catch from April to May, but it’s not like the past season where you’re sitting on your surfboard with an exciting mix of fear and fun.

I was fortunate enough to get to spend time early this year in my happy place in Mindanao, Dahican in Mati City, Davao Oriental. If you’ve been reading or following me for a while, you’d know that Dahican is and will always be home for me. People might have grown

up, resorts may have changed their look, and there are more people now than back then, but one thing still holds true for me—Dahican will always be a place I can call home.

When you think about home, what comes to mind?

Home can mean a lot of things for different people. It can be the roof over our heads when we were growing up, it can be a city with all our childhood friends in it or simply where your loved ones are.

It’s simple for me. Home is where you find family, whether they’re biological or not. Home is where you have friends or even strangers that treat you

like family.

Have no roof over your head for the night? They’ll invite to stay in their humble shack or offer you their worn-out hammock to sleep in for the night or two.

Don’t have a surfboard with you? They’ll lend theirs even if they aren’t able to surf.

Hungry but left your wallet somewhere else? They’ll treat you to whatever’s cooking and invite you for a boodle fight feast, fresh seafood and canned goods on top of steamed rice served on a longboard.

The best thing about what I call home in Dahican is that the people, especially the locals,

will always welcome you no matter how long you’ve been away. They’re still eager to see you and ask about your stories from wherever you’ve been.

And the next best thing?

The waves will always welcome you home, no matter how long you’ve been gone or how far you’ve set your foot from its shores.

I remember walking barefoot on the road from an epic surf session a few kilometers away from Dahican Surf Resort.

Everything I felt was nostalgic.

The hot sand on the soles of my feet, the burning sun drying up my damp sarong and the areas around my salt-crusted brows

The ideal mode of transportation for groups in Dahican, the tricycle with as many boards you can carry on top. feeling the onset of a grand sunburn—the nostalgia was present and so real.

I wondered how something could feel surreal and yet so real, this beautiful place that I go back to every so often was still home despite the progress around the area. We have Balud Coffee House where the best caramel frappe is served.

It started as a lofty dream.

The millennials in us, with passionate hearts to pursue what we love the most. I am proud of Cha Sardinia and Carlos Mancupang for chasing this dream into reality. With-

I remember how their businesses started with just, and now that it’s a reality, I could never be prouder of these two.

ers have a common cause, and they all work towards keeping everything in Dahican sustainable. From their packaging and containers to the way they handle their businesses and even during their free time, like my sister and me, it’s always a beach clean up whenever we walk along the shores of Dahican.

I dream of the day where there is no longer any trash to pick up on the shore because everybody does their own part in picking up. I dream of the day when kids themselves tell their playmates not to throw trash carelessly. I dream of the day where we no longer have unsightly waste seen on our shores and in our waters.

Most importantly, I dream of the way when the waves call me home, I know where to go.

When they do call, and they call often, I think of Dahican.

I think of its people, the coco-

nut trees lining up the on the shore, the tanned children with skimboards and the mesmerizing shades of blue of the water’s surface.

Dahican may not be like before, there’s a lot of change, but this change is good because those that effect change now believe in the preserving power of sustainability which we all

can take part in. This summer and every time we head to the beach let’s be reminded to clean up after ourselves and never leave trash in the place, I and many others also call their home.

GMA Public Affairs presents a unique story of friendship with Alex & Amie BEGINNING MONDAY, GMA Public Affairs reminds viewers of their childhood best friend in the live animation series Alex & Amie featuring Kapuso stars Mikael Daez and Max Collins.

Strict, serious, and meticulous.

These are words that describe teacher Alex (Mikael Daez) of Buenavitez Institute of Learning.

His ‘exemplary’ image earned him the task of being the homeroom adviser of the school’s most notorious class. Everything is fine until someone from his past makes a comeback in his life: Amie—his childhood best friend. To make things complicated, Amie is an imaginary friend.

Now Alex is faced with a dilemma: how will he perform his teaching duties and keep his image to his class when everywhere he goes, Amie is there? Worse, it seems Amie gets in the way of Alex’s personal life, jeopardizing his chances of being close to the school’s Nurse Bing (Max Collins).

Mikael and Max shared that they really had fun taping the show.

“Masaya iyong interactions namin as a cast,” says Mikael. “I guess because of that, my scenes with Amie, I ended up having fun with it. We’re hoping na ang saya namin on the set mag-translate sa viewers and sa mga bata. Sana mag-enjoy sila,” he shares.

“Nae-enjoy ko talaga ang mga

show na pambata, because not only na nagkakaroon kami ng fans na bata, it’s just light. Masaya siyang gawin. Magaan, walang masyadong pressure. Para lang kaming naglalaro so na-enjoy namin yung taping namin,” says Max. This latest live animated show from GMA Public Affairs is indeed for the kids and kids at heart.

Sharing his thoughts on the concept of this animation series, Mikael says Alex & Amie will remind viewers of the magic of friendship that surpassed time and age. “In terms of unresolved issues with friends, I guess to a certain point everyone can relate to that, as you grow older, you don’t see your friends when you meet again, may awkward phase but at the end of the day you guys are best friends, you’ll find your level ground again.

It just takes time,” he says.

Max, on the other hand, says

“Maalaga ako in a sense. Maalaga siya [Nurse Bing] sa mga students and co-teacher. And open-minded.

Kasi siya lang ang naka-intindi kay Alex. I guess ganoon din ako, I’m very understanding and I like kids,” she adds.

ORONTO -- Kawhi Leonard scored 36 points -- including two important �ield goals late in the second overtime -- and grabbed nine rebounds as the Toronto Raptors defeated the visiting Milwaukee Bucks 118112 in double-overtime Sunday night in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference �inals.

The Bucks lead the best-of-seven series 2-1 with Game 4 slated to Tuesday in Toronto.

Pascal Siakam added 25 points and 11 rebounds for Toronto and Marc Gasol had 16 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists and �ive blocked shots.

Toronto's Kyle Lowry had 11 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Norman Powell had 19 points off the bench before fouling out late in the fourth.

ETHPAGE -- Brooks Koepka held off a late charge from Dustin Johnson to capture his second consecutive PGA Championship on Sunday, completing a wire-to-wire victory for his fourth major title in nerve-wracking fashion.

A near-collapse saw Koepka's record seven-stroke lead reduced to a single shot, but he withstood making four bogeys in a row on the back nine and another at 17 for an unexpectedly narrow triumph.

"This is probably the most satis�ied I've been with all the majors," said Koepka. "This one's de�initely at the top of the list of how emotionally and how mentally spent I am."

Koepka �ired a fourover par 74 �inal round at windy Bethpage Black to �inish 72 holes on eight-under 272 and defeat Johnson by two strokes, replacing him as world number one as a result.

"I'm just glad we don't have any more holes to play," Koepka said. "That was a stressful round of

golf."

Bogeys by Johnson at 16 and 17 made the difference but Koepka made bogey at the par-3 17th, then escaped sand and weeds off the 18th tee by �inding the fairway and green then sinking a six-foot putt for the victory.

"DJ played a hell of a round to come back and to grind it out," Koepka said.

"He did a great job putting pressure on me, making me play some solid golf down the stretch."

The usually poker-faced Koepka admitted the moment got to him on the �inal hole, where he �ired a �ist pump after his winning putt.

"That was the most excited I've ever been in my life there on 18," Koepka said.

Koepka, who seeks his third US Open win in a row next month at Pebble Beach, became the �irst man to own back-to-back titles at two majors simultaneously by capturing the Wanamaker Trophy and the $1.98 million (1.77 million euro) top prize.

Saul Farah, the Bolivian heavyweight king who replaced China’s Zhuyi Wu in the Thrilla in Davao boxing extravaganza, is probably the most active of all boxers I have read about.

Born Saul Becerra, this rugged ring gladiator has fought 95 times, won 63 (60 by KOs), lost 23 and drew 3. He has a 63% KO average. Wow, this guy can kill a cow with one punch!

Farah carries the “Phoneix Assassin” as his label which aptly describes his somewhat phenomenal prominence in the Lati-

no boxing circles. He debuted in 2004 and has not stopped from taking all-comers since then.

Born on January 23, 1983 in Sta. Ana del Yacuma, the 36-year old knockout artist has fought a total of 350 rounds. He has a mean-looking stare meaner than a hungry lion seeking its prey for food.

Farah, a 5’10” orthodox �ighter, last fought very recently in March 2019 where he defeated Cesar Mamani to snatch the Bolivian heavyweight title. He totes two other WBC crowns, including the South American WBC Latino heavyweight tiara.

Just to emphasize, the Thrilla in Davao, slated June 15 at the ENDERUN Tent City in Lanang, is a boxing card that features the �irst heavyweight title �ight in Davao City some 44 years following the 1975 Thrilla in Manila heavyweight contest held in the country’s capital during the Marcos years.

“His (Farah) style is almost like Mike Tyson who comes surging forward to put down his opponent, the earlier the better,” said Rey Rodis, chair of RED Boxing Int’l, a long-time promoter who put up the �ight card as one way of stimulating the

boxing interest of sports fans in Davao and its environs.

The 12-round title confrontation, he added, may not last the distance.

The Davao Thrilla is a 54-round boxing extravaganza presented by RED Boxing Int’l in cooperation with the of�ice of re-elected City Mayor Sara Duterte and the city government of Davao.

This cooperative gesture was relayed to Rodis (who not incidentally is a native of Davao City) by Mike Aportadera, Davao City sports coordinator, in a recent courtesy call at city hall.

This development raises Rodis’ con�idence in his boxing promotion as he continues to proceed in securing a television agreement with PTV 4 for a nation-wide broadcast of this once-in-a-blue moon heavyweight championship battle in Davao.

Two young aspiring undefeated boxers from the Mt. Province in the Cordillera region will display their wares against two foreign counterparts from Indonesia for two vacant GBO Asia-Paci�ic belts at stake.

Parks sizzles in PBA debut that goes with a win for his team Blackwater

n his much anticipated PBA debut, Ray Ray Parks did not disappoint with an individual effort of 20 points, eight rebounds, two assists, three steals, and one block. His team Blackwater got the W as well.

With Parks showing his worth, Blackwater Elite opened the Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup with a huge win against Meralco Bolts in overtime, 94-91, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on Sunday night.

The Elite scored four straight points off a dunk from Alex Stepheson and two free throws from Mike Digregorio for a 93-89 cushion with 17.7 seconds left in the extra period.

Gani Lawal kept the Bolts in the game with a follow-up, with just 11.1 seconds remaining to cut the lead to two.

Parks still kept the door open for Meralco as he only made a split from the line, but Lawal

failed to force a second overtime by missing a triple as time expired.

Stepheson and Digregorio each scored 21 points for Blackwater, which won for the �irst time under Coach Aris Dimaunahan.

Lawal �inished with 34 markers, 21 boards, and three steals for Meralco.

In the other match, the Alaska Aces turned on the jets in the third quarter to pummel the Columbian Dyip, 11198, for its �irst win in the Commissioner’s Cup. The Aces outscored the Dyip, 34-13, in the third frame to pull away for good.

Chris Daniels made 25 points on 11-of-16 shooting, 16 rebounds, two assists, one block, and one steal for Alaska.

Chris Banchero added 20 points and two rebounds off the bench.
