PCOO to launch ‘Virtual Presser’ for foreign media, audiences

he Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom) of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Directorate for Integrated Police Operations of the Philippine National Police (PNP) strengthened its collaboration as both agencies signed two Joint Letter Directive (JLD) on Friday, April 12, during the Joint Peace and Security Coordinating Center Conference held at Eastmincom Naval Station Felix Apolinario in Panacan, Davao City.

Eastmincom spokesperon Major Ezra Balagtey announced the signing of the joint directive and bared its details after the formal ceremony.

“Through this, both

agencies will continue to strengthen the cooperation and interoperability of both organizations in the �ields of Law Enforcement and Internal Security Operations,” Balagtey

said.

Balagtey said Eastmincom commander Leutenant General Felimon T. Santos, Jr. and DIPO Eastern Mindanao director Police Major General Alfredo Valdez spearheaded the signing of JLD. “The meeting is in line with the continuous enhancement of the inter-operability and Eastern Mindanao joint security assessment of the two agencies as major stakeholders of peace and security in eastern Mindanao,” Balagtey added.

Pasaka condemns killing of lumad leader

he Presidential Communications Operations Of�ice (PCOO), through the Of�ice of the Global Media Affairs (OGMA), will launch on Monday the pilot episode of “The Virtual Presser”.

The Virtual Presser is an interactive online video platform where journalists based abroad can ask top government of�icials of the Duterte administration questions on the nation’s pressing issues relevant to global conversation.

Presidential Spokesperson and Chief Presidential Legal Counsel, Secretary Salvador Panelo, will be the program’s �irst guest to talk about policies of the Duterte administration that have international relevance.

“This will be another opportunity for us to connect to international audiences to respond to pressing issues and enable foreign journalists to ask questions without leaving their desks,” Communication Secretary Martin M. Andanar said.

“We gather together, diversi�ied activities of the Executive departments of government, into a common thread of information that is clear, exacting, factual, and comprehensive enough, for the understanding of everyone in whatever circumstance,” the PCOO chief added.

Chief of OGMA, JV Arcena, said the virtual press conference is just one of the upcoming programs lined up by the PCOO for the international media and foreign audiences.

The Virtual Presser,

Arcena said, is the fastest and cheapest way to engage the global media and to respond to their questions.

"This will enhance our engagements with the foreign media, and make sure that they get the same level of attention, the same accurate information as our local journalists. We believe that the international media play a big role in amplifying the Philippines’ policy messages,” he said.

The latest installment of The Presser series is a continuing effort of the PCOO to �ight disinformation and promote government-media bridge policy.

“Our work is a continuing process of summarizing, simplifying, and satisfying the fundamental need to inform. We remove ambiguity, we clarify the obscure, we correct the false, we extol the truth. We drive hard objective realities of achievements and shortcomings.

BARMM to distribute dignity kits to women in conflict areas

T

o meet women’s immediate hygiene needs, improve their mobility and protection, about 957 dignity kits will be distributed to lactating mothers and pregnant women who are displaced by the recent armed con�lict in Maguindanao.

Through the Ministries of Health and Social Services, the United Nations Population Fund—the UN's reproductive health and rights agency—will hand over dignity kits starting tomorrow, April 13. It aims to secure the safety and promote the well-being of the displced women and the communities as a whole.

Iori Kato, UNFPA's country representative, said that the dignity kits are an integral part of UNFPA's assistance to any humanitarian crisis as it is designed to meet the speci�ic hygiene needs of

women and girls of reproductive age.

It includes basic hygiene and protection items such as sanitary pads, underwear, soap, shampoo, food, water, �lashlights, and whistles.

Of�icial data of social services ministry show that more than 45,000 individuals have been displaced due to con�licts across the Bangsamoro autonomous region. The UNFPA estimates that there could be more than 1,400 pregnant women among the affected population and around 500 are expected to deliver in the

next three months. Moreover, at least 900 women have given birth in the last six months.

"In times of crisis, it is more important to protect the dignity, safety, and reproductive health of pregnant and lactating women," Kato said.

He noted that women do not stop getting pregnant or delivering babies just because an emergency hits.

Lawyer Raissa Jajurie, minister of social services, said that on Saturday, April 13, they will distribute the dignity kits to displaced women in four municipalities - Datu Saudi, Datu Salibo, Datu Unsay, and Datu Piang.

Dr. Saffrullah Dipatuan, minister of health, and Atty. Jajurie led the turnover ceremony together with Kato on April 12.

Poe pushes amendments to Public Services Act

S

enator Grace Poe on Friday pushed for the passage of a legislation amending the 82-year-old Public Services Act to provide better quality services to Filipinos.

Poe, chair of the Senate committee on public services, made the statement amid the continuing water supply shortage in Metro Manila and the spate of power outages in Luzon.

Poe said power and water utilities, as well as telecommunication companies, are “forcing” Filipinos into “early penitence” because of their poor service.

“Walang tubig, walang kuryente, walang internet. Sobrang kalbaryo. Sa susu-

nod na linggo pa ang Mahal na Araw pero nauna na ang pwersahang penitensya (There’s no water, electricity, and internet. The suffering is intense. Holy Week is still next week but the forced penitence came in early),” Poe said.

“Tandaan natin, may mga probisyon sa kontrata ng mga kumpanya na kailangang kalidad na serbisyo ang maibibigay sa taumbayan, at may kaukulang penalty ang hindi makakatugon (Remember, there are provisions in the contracts of companies that they should provide quality service to the people and a corresponding penalty shall be imposed if this is not met),” Poe added.

DILG endorses electioneering cases to Comelec vs 52 execs

he Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Friday endorsed to the Commission on Elections (Comelec) the complaints against 52 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) of�icials for allegedly being involved in partisan political activities.

Epimaco Densing III submitted a letter containing the statements of people and the names of the village and youth of�icials supposedly engaged in electioneering.

“This is the transmittal of complaints by our citizens against barangay and SK of�icials, who are openly participating in campaign activities,” he said in an in-

terview.

“We are asking the Comelec to, on their own, look into it and �ile motu proprio cases,” he added.

The DILG of�icial said they support the complainants that the local of�icials are violating the law, as well as rules of the Civil Service Commission (CSC).

Halal Trade and Tourism expo set in Davao City

three-day Philippine Halal Trade and Tourism Expo is scheduled in Davao City from May 2 to 4, 2019, an of�icial of the organizing committee said on Friday.

Marilou Ampuan, a trustee of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (DCCCII), said on Friday that she hopes the expo, the fourth since 2015, would gather more domestic and international buyers and sellers.

he Philippines needs to ramp up investment spending in science and technology to spur productivity growth as it gears up for the socalled Asian Century, an of�icial of National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) said on Friday.

“The benchmark actually is one percent of GDP (gross domestic product) but ours for many years have been very low…We are already increasing investments on science and technology, R&D (research and development),” NEDA Undersecretary for Regional Development Adoracion Navarro said in an interview on the sidelines of a forum on advancing national productivity through excellence strategies.

She said it is also imperative for the private sector to make investments on technologies, such as on smart manufacturing and green productivity technol-

ogies.

Navarro said the concept of the Asian Century emerged from the 2011 study by the Asian Development Bank which found that an additional three billion Asians could enjoy living standards similar to those in Europe today, and that Asia could account for over half of the global output by the middle of the century.

She underscored the need for the Philippines to collaborate with other Asian countries, learn from them, and devise ways and means by which they can “help turn the so-called Asian Century into a reality.”

clude the continuing implementation of the Retail Competition and Open Access (RCOA), which is currently subject to a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) by the Supreme Court (SC), the creation of a "forward market", and thorough evaluation of current market price limits.

"These mechanisms were provided for under Republic Act No. 9136, or the Electric Power Industry Reform Act of 2001 to facilitate market competition that would provide consumers with a reliable power supply at the least cost," Cusi said.

"The DOE fully intends to pursue these policy directions to create permanent solutions to the otherwise temporary, yet recurring challenge of red alerts. In this regard, we are calling on the cooperation of all our industry participants and stakeholders for the mutual bene�it of everyone," he added. (PNA)

Expected bonanza

An addendum to the excitement in the current electoral campaign is the announcement by re-electionist Rep. Antonio R. Floirendo Jr. of Davao del Norte’s Second District that he would seek the position of Speaker of the House when the new Congress convenes next June.

All indications show that Tonyboy, also known as “TBF” in the corporate and political worlds, is serious about his announced aspiration.

His announcement is warmly welcomed by most other incumbent congressmen specially those whose return to the House in the May balloting is considered a cinch due to proven hold of their respective bailiwicks. It maybe noted that this is the same group that ousted Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez from the speakership and replaced him posthaste with Pampanga Rep. and former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo last year.

That the ouster, widely reported to be orchestrated by Davao City Mayor and Hugpong ng Pagbabago founding leader Sara Duterte, was supported by a big majority clearly indicates how disenchanted the House members were with Alvarez’s leadership.

During last week’s press conference at the White House restaurant in Camella Northpoint, Davao City, Tonyboy himself articulated his own plight as a victim of the Alvarez speakership. He recalled that in 2018, his district

had “zero budget” which he attributed to his well-known tiff with the then Speaker.

He said this will never happen to any congressional district in the country under a Floirendo speakership. “No zero budget; even opposition congressmen will be given their corresponding budget,” he said during the presscon.

Indeed, the prospect of Floirendo’s assuming the fourth most powerful position in the land is exciting specially to the people of Mindanao who stand to bene�it from his newly-acquired clout. With him at the helm of the House, Mindanaoans can expect a bonanza of more big ticket projects. His speakership is bound to happen also because of the expected support of no less than President Duterte and the HNP political juggernaut headed by Mayor Inday.

MUJAHID NAVARRA UNDERSTANDING ISLAM

MUSLIMS IN POLITICS Islam is an all-encompassing religion that it is not only a religion that is practiced inside a place of worship. It is not only a religion that is practiced through prayers and rituals. Islam is a way of life. In everything that humans need to do, Islam has its rules about it. Worship, business, work, politics, personal life, society, and others are all governed by Islamic rulings that are directly mentioned in the Quran and the sayings of Prophet Muhammad or could be deduced from it if direct mention could not be found.

To simplify, a Muslim practices Islam in every part of his or her existence from their childhood, maturity, having careers, old age, dying and being buried – all these have Islamic rules to be obeyed.

Islam has its own form of governance which is according to the Shariah or Islamic law. The Shariah upholds laws that shall protect the religion, life, property, honor, and intellect of human beings whether they are Muslims or Non-Muslims under a Muslim government. This is simple to say in a Muslim majority government but what about here in the Philippines? Is it allowed?

Democracy is known as the rule by the people. Democracy is one of the oldest known forms of

government in the world having been invented in Greece 5th century before Christ. Democracy has been de�ined as the opposite of dictatorship, communism, and totalitarianism. The Philippines has a democratic government in the form of a constitutional republic with a presidential system whose government of�icials are elected in an election.

As much as possible, it has been disallowed by scholars for Muslims to have any participation in any democratic government except to uphold what Islam upholds, bring bene�it and remove harm from the Muslims.

Sheikh Muhammad bin Saleh Al Othaimin was asked about participating in elections and he answered, “I think that elections are obligatory; we should appoint the one who we think is good, because if the good people abstain, who will take their place? Evil people will take their place, or neutral people in whom there is neither good nor evil, but they follow everyone who makes noise. So we have no choice but to choose those who we think are �it.

Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Baz was asked the same question and he replied, “It is not permissible for a Muslim to nominate himself

in the hope that he can become part of a system which rules according to something other than that which Allah has revealed and operates according to something other than the Shariah of Islam.

It is not permissible for a Muslim to vote for him or for anyone else who will work in that government, unless the one who nominates himself or those who vote for him hope that by getting involved in that they will be able to change the system to one that operates according to the Shariah of Islam, and they are using this as a means to overcome the system of government, provided that the one who nominates himself will not accept any position after being elected except one that does not go against Islamic Shariah.

If someone were to say: We chose someone but most of the parliament are not like that, We say: It does not matter. If Allah blesses this one person and enables him to speak the truth in this parliament, he will undoubtedly have an effect. But what we need is to be sincere towards Allah and the problem is that we rely too much on physical means and we do not listen to what Allah says. So nominate the one who you think is good, and put your trust in Allah.”

These answers were based on someone of the basic tenets of the Shariah that we shall discuss below: 1. Minority status: Because of the Filipino Muslims’ minority status in the Philippines, they need to be represented so that our rights are protected and we are not marginalized or discriminated against. Being a minority means that the Muslims’ political priorities should be based on self-preservation.

2. Prevention of harm: Electing a Muslim government of�icial, if he or she shall be loyal to Islam and the Muslims, could prevent many forms of evil that might befall the unrepresented Muslims. During the Marawi siege, for example, it was our Muslim politicians who facilitated relief operations and established human rights watch for the Muslim civilians caught in the cross�ire.

3. Lesser of two evils: We must admit that most Muslim politicians shall not be religious anyway and this is what some people point out to as the reason for the futility of voting in an election.

But in the principle of the lesser of two evils, we would rather have a sinning Muslim in the government who sympathizes with the Muslims rather than a career

Non-Muslim politician who may not have even have a genuine concern for the Muslims at all.

4. Advantages and disadvantages: Having Muslim politicians in key government positions shall have advantages and there is no doubt about it.

5. Prevention of harm is more important than the acquisition of bene�it. We have mentioned that having a politician may have meager bene�its at best but in the tenets of the Shariah, having a Muslim politician in key government positions may prevent atrocities, abuses or violations against the rights of Muslims as citizens of this country.

What about Muslim women in politics? Women have been prohibited in Islam to hold key executive government positions such as presidency, governorate or mayoralty. This prohibition is due to the nature of executive positions as brutal in a sense that there is much intrigue or possibly violence in it that women are to be protected from it. However, they may be allowed or could even be encouraged to be part of the legislative branches of the government in order to enact laws that shall be advantageous to women in particular and Muslims in general.

Powerful stuff.” – John Katz *** A couple of days ago, I received a private message from a friend. Actually, it was a forwarded message sent to her by another person. After reading it, I might as well share it to all my readers here so you get a lesson or two from it: Many years ago, Armand was sitting on a couch on a hot, humid day, having coffee during a conversation with my father. As they talked about life, the father thoughtfully cast a clear, sober look at his son.

“Never forget your friends,” the father advised. “They will become more important as you get older. Regardless of how much you love your family and the children you have, you will always need friends. Remember to go out with them occasionally. Do activities with them, get in touch with them…”

“What a strange advice,” Armand thought. “I am an adult

and surely my wife and our family are everything I need to make sense of my life.”

Yet, Armand obeyed him; kept in touch with his friends and annually increased their number. Over the years, he became aware that his father knew what he was talking about! In as much as time and nature carry out their designs and mysteries on a person, friends are the bulwarks of life.

Now, in his 60s, this are the things Armand learned about life and living: Time passes.

Life goes on. The distance increases. Children as well as grandchildren grow up and become independent and although it breaks the parents’ hearts, they are often separated from them.

Jobs come and go. Illusions, desires, attractions, sex weaken. People do what they should not do. The parents die. Colleagues forget the favors. The races are over.

But true friends are always there, no matter how long or how many miles they are apart. A friend is never more distant than the reach of a need, reaching out to you, intervening in your favor, waiting for you with open arms or ears with blessings for your life.

The message ended with this statement: “When we started this adventure called LIFE, we did not know of the incredible joys or sorrows that were ahead. We did not know how much we would need from one another. Love your parents, take care of your children, but keep a group of good friends.”

When I was still in high school, I had the opportunity of knowing these friends for life: William (who now lives in Canada), Gerry (now living in Denmark), Ujean (a doctor who settles also in Canada), Abner (who still lives in our hometown, where I also live), Glocelyn (who real name is actually Lorna, but that’s a long story on how it happens), and Delia (now an American citizen living in the United States).

When I started working for a non-government, I came to know Monching and his brother Daniel, who later become my friends. At one time, two Americans came to our of�ice for a training. Unknowingly, both became my friends, too: Gregory (who now lives in California) and Brad (a journalist).

These days, I have several friends that to mention them one by one will not be enough to �ill the recommended space for to-

day’s column. Besides, if I enumerate them one by one, I may fail to mention others.

We need friends just as we need air, water and food to sustain us through life. “The glory of friendship is not the outstretched hand, not the kindly smile, nor the joy of companionship; it is the spiritual inspiration that comes to one when you discover that someone else believes in you and is willing to trust you with a friendship,” said Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Just like husband and wife, friends also �ight; friction also arises. In some cases, there are misunderstandings.

“Sometimes being a friend means mastering the art of timing,” Octavia Butler says. “There is a time for silence. A time to let go and allow people to hurl themselves into their own destiny. And a time to prepare to pick up the pieces when it’s all over.”

Gillian Anderson has also said: “Well, it seems to me that the best relationships – the one that last – are frequently the one that are rooted in friendship. You know, one day you look at the person and you see something more than you did the night before. Like a switch has been �licked somewhere. And the person who was just a friend is…

suddenly the only person you can ever imagine yourself with.”

With that, I am reminded of the anecdote that was featured in The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. It goes this way: “I am looking for friends. What does that mean – tame?”

“It is an act too often neglected,” said the fox. “It means to establish ties.”

“To establish ties?”

“Just that,” said the fox. “To me, you are still nothing more than a little boy who is just like a hundred thousand other little boys. And I have no need of you. And you, on your part, have no need of me. To you, I am nothing more than a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But if you tame me, then we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique in all the world. To you, I shall be unique in all the world…”

And that, my friend, is what friendship is all about.

To end this piece, allow me to quote the words of Muhammad Ali, one of the world’s wellloved boxers: “Friendship is the hardest thing in the world to explain. It’s not something you learn in school. But if you haven’t learned the meaning of friendship, you really haven’t learned anything.”

PARENTING NOWADAYS is a whole different ballgame. An amalgamation of a lot of different things, you are in charge of making sense of everything the world has to offer for your little one. Even just what products to buy can be overwhelming. The last time I had a newborn was a mere six odd years ago but show me the new sterilisers and feeding bottle shapes and it will all seem very alien indeed.

One thing I do appreciate now is how toys have evolved, especially educational toys.

The lines between how fun and visually appealing educational toys are as compared to conventional ones we find stocked by toy store giants are blurring.

Toys are almost universally accepted in this world of new-age parenting. Whereas there is that initial hesitation to switch from a conventional child-rearing item to a fancier one, parents are always quick to explore better toy options for their children especially the newer breed of toys that carry with them specific purposes and are designed to teach particular concepts.

One such enterprising mama who wanted to look beyond what was available here in Davao is Peony Yu Haw, who set up Rooke + Reese last year. The kids’ goods hub which she first established online just became newly minted brick and mortar.

This quick progression can only be owed to the positive response that her choice of products has gotten. Peony, who was based in Australia for a time when she worked as a nurse, decided to move back to Davao when she got married to Wesley Haw. Now a mom of two toddlers - ages three and one - she decided to bring in a lot of what she calls STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) related toys, kits and puzzles because of an experience where she couldn’t find a suitable puzzle for her then two year old son. Her store, named after her two kids, is largely inspired by them and what she thinks they would love or benefit from using. She has amassed quite a line of products which includes not just toys but also books such as the awardwinning UK-sourced Usborne Books, thoughtfully chosen things for a child’s various needs such as Saltwater Sandals, the

doctor-recommended Halo Sleepsack Swaddles for newborns, OXO Tot baby products and the popular Yumbox bentostyle lunch boxes.

Rooke + Reese helps parents address a lot of concerns especially when it comes to playtime.

They are opening at a time when a lot of child-rearers are thinking about the issue of weaning their kids from too much gadget time and developing healthier playing habits. Even without the issue of gadget overuse, there is also the perennial concern of parents on how to keep the kids busy especially when they are too. This is timely with summer upon us.

What will make a great first impression is how reasonably priced everything is because their wares are really sure to quickly capture your fancy and your child’s. There is that undeniable premium for the quality that you see but not anywhere near what you might find exorbitant mostly capping at P1,500. “I always try to find toys that have good quality yet not too expensive so others can also afford. We would love for all to be able to experience our carefully selected toys because education is not only limited to those who can well afford,” Peony shares.

As hands-on as they are with their kids and their start-up business, Peony and Wesley are milling so many possibilities for Rooke + Reese. It is Peony’s wish to consult with occupational therapists to find out which toys can bring purposeful teaching for kids with specific needs. She also hopes that they can hold workshops and host monthly activities for kids in their store.

Born from the simple wish to see their kids feel most at home with simpler toys that encourage imagination, activity and playing together, they have created a store that will spark a culture of making playtime count as a whole.

Joyce Pring embarks on her passionate pursuits THIS 2019, Kapuso host Joyce Pring faces another thrilling challenge as she co-anchors GMA News and Public Affairs’ online newscast Stand for Truth.

Headlined by award-winning broadcast journalist Atom Araullo with GMA Resident Analyst Richard Heydarian, and Joyce, together with a fresh group of reporters from all over the Philippines, the weeknight news premieres on April 15 via GMA News Online and GMA Public Affairs’ YouTube channel.

Isuzu PUVs enhance operations at PITX

E

xecutives of Isuzu Philippines Corporation (IPC) paid a visit last March 26 to the Paranaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX) in Parañaque City to witness how Isuzu's modernized public utility vehicles (PUVs) are helping enhance PITX's services and operations.

Touring the PITX facilities were IPC President Hajime Koso, Sales and Marketing Division Head Joseph Bautista, and Corporate Communication Manager Nora Liquido. They were met

by PITX General Manager Mariano Antonio Arroyo.

The IPC of�icers were transported to PITX on board an Isuzu QKR77 cab and chassis platform con�igured into a Class 2, 23-seater, air-conditioned, modernized PUV with the rear body designed and manufactured by Almazora Motors Corp. This PUV is one of the 15 units franchised to the Senate Employees Transport Service Cooperative (SETSCO) plying the southwest Manila route from the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) to PITX and vice versa.

The SETSCO franchise also signi�ies IPC's pilot endeavor with the modernized PUV. These PUVs started operations June 18 last year.

On board the modernized PUV, the IPC of�icers enjoyed its amenities, comfort, and safety. The PUV body is compliant with Philippine National Standards (PNS 2126:2017). The passenger cabin �loor-toceiling height and gangway provide more space for passengers to move easily inside. The passenger door is safely situated on the right-hand side, facing the sidewalk.

Other design features of the body include panoramic windows and windshields, full-body insulation with GeneQ shield, automatic door closer, ECE-compliant headlamps, brake system, wipers, windshield washer, side view mirrors, and provisions for persons with disabilities.

Completing the modernized look and features of the new PUVs are the LCD/LED TV

monitors, electronic signages, �ire extinguishers, GPS navigation system, CCTV, dashcam and backup cameras, and the automatic fare collection system—all geared for passengers' safety, entertainment, and added convenience in fare collection.

As the group disembarked at the designated unloading area and entered the PITX facilities, they witnessed the spacious, airport-like facilities—all geared for the convenient, comfortable, safe, and speedy transit of passengers coming in and out of southwest of Metro Manila.

The arrivals and departures of provincial buses are well-segregated and orderly (buses arriving from the provinces are directed to the 2nd level, while departures are at ground level), with numerous LED monitors on the hallways indicating bus schedules, destinations, arrival and departure times, and strategically placed speakers announcing transit updates. Ticketing booths are numerous and conducted expediently. Passenger waiting areas are similar to those of airline lounges. The multi-level PITX is air-conditioned all throughout, with various food stalls and merchandise stores lining the walkways for passengers' shopping needs while in transit.

The PITX also offers loading and unloading bays for metro jeepneys and garage-to-terminal (GT or UV) shuttle vans.

The PITX, built and operated by Megawide Construction Corp and the Department of Transportation, started operations on November 5, 2018 under the Public-Private Partnership program, has been projected to be able to handle up to 200,000 passengers daily, servicing the following routes in the Cavite and Batangas provinces: Kawit, Noveleta, Cavite City, Tanza, Naic, Maragondon, Ternate, General Trias, Trece Martires, Indang, Bacoor, Imus, Dasmarinas, Silang, Amadeo, Tagaytay, Mendez, Alfonso, Nasugbu, and Lian.

with the facilities and systems already in place at the PITX, remarked: "The PITX is a prime example of how public-private partnerships can work in harmony to improve the lives of the people. Isuzu Philippines Corporation is delighted to play its part in this business model, as we provide the modern PUVs necessary for the convenient, safe, comfortable, and ef�icient

transit of passengers between PITX and their places of work, leisure and residence in southwestern Manila, Pasay and Paranaque cities."

IPC Sales and Marketing Division Head Joseph Bautista added: "SETSCO's modern PUVs are merely the start of IPC's wholehearted effort to support the government's Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP), which

is envisioned to replace 200,000 old jeepneys nationwide with new, safe and environment-friendly public utility vehicles.

IPC has been slowly but steadily adding Isuzu-branded modern PUVs to transport �leets and cooperatives around Metro Manila and in the provinces since the government program started in June 2018."

PITX GM Mariano Antonio Arroyo acknowl-

edged the signi�icant role the modern PUVs play in the ful�illment of PITX's mandate. He af�irmed that modern PUVs such as those of Isuzu have helped immensely in expanding the branding, purpose, and public acceptance of the PITX. He described that even before commuters enter PITX, they have had a taste of modern commuting inside the Isuzu modern PUVs.

eam Turbo Diesel and Team Overdrive kept their unbeaten slates intact in the ongoing Nissan Navara Nation Philippines basketball league at the Azuela Cove basketball court.

Team Turbo Diesel relied on its balanced scoring to overcome Team Supercharge 65-50, on Tuesday, April 10.

Sweet-shooting Ravj Vailoces led the surging Turbo Diesels with 15 points while his teammate Macky Cabadu was as stellar by dropping 14 points to seal the match in a dominant fashion.

Vince Chua added eight while Lex Fernadez, Jerson Ferolin and Marco Echeveria made an identical six points.

Team Supercharge, however, banked on the

service of Ron Millares who dropped 26 points in a losing cause.

In another match, Team Overdrive was like in a nitro mode as they lashed Team Intercooler 63-54, the same day.

The Team Overdrive imposed their will in the get-go and never looked back to score the breezy win.

Mykel Arellano and Ram-ram Vailoces combined for 44 points to keep the Intercoolers at bay althroughout the match.

Arellano sizzled by making a game-high 28 points while Vailoces had 16 markers.

The hapless Intercooler, meanwhile, was carried

by Richard Caballero and Tristan Barraca who scored 15 and 13 points, respectively.

ajor winners Francesco Molinari, Louis Oosthuizen, Brooks Koepka, Jason Day and Adam Scott shared top spot at the Masters on Friday at the end of the second round, but it was Tiger Woods who commanded the spotlight once again at Augusta National.

Woods brought the roars back to the famed venue with a brilliant four-underpar 68, putting himself on track for a �ifth Green Jacket. At six-under-par 138, the American is just one shot off the leaders heading into 'moving day.'

After an ordinary outward nine featuring three birdies offset by a pair of bogeys, Woods embarked on one of his trademark charges, carding three birdies after the turn to shoot up the leaderboard.

"I feel like I played my own way back into the tournament," said Woods. "I was just very patient today, felt very good to be out there doing what I was doing.

"This is now three

straight majors that I've been in the mix and so it's good stuff."

The stage is now set for an extraordinary weekend as Woods attempts to slip into his �irst Green Jacket since 2005 and claim his �irst major since 2008.

Woods has made huge strides since returning from back fusion surgery nearly two years ago, collecting his 80th career PGA Tour title at last season's ending Tour Championships.

However, nothing less than a 15th major victory will quell talk of an unful�illed comeback.

It would also reignite his pursuit of Jack Nicklaus's record haul of 18 majors.

he Golden State Warriors followed up their second consecutive NBA title — and third in four years — by adding DeMarcus Cousins, the four-time All-Star. It became commonplace to declare that they had ruined the league by removing any suspense to the season. A starting lineup of �ive All-Stars, two of which are former recipients of the Most Valuable Player Award, was just too much.

There was palace intrigue, however. Kevin Durant and Draymond Green feuded in public, Cousins was routinely exposed on defense, Klay Thompson had a rough start and Stephen Curry’s shot seemed to fail him before he began wearing contacts on the court — in a scary acknowledgment that he had struggled with his vision for years even as he established himself as the deadliest 3-point shooter in NBA history.

The drama — which many on the team have said is actually less than they dealt with last season — led to long stretches in which the Warriors seemed positively pedestrian. Perhaps most relevant to these playoffs, it led to them feuding with of�icials, and Durant and Green topping the NBA in technical fouls.

It has widely been assumed that this will be Durant’s last season in Golden State. The quirks of the salary cap mean Cousins is almost assuredly gone as well.

Shaun Livingston is likely to retire, Andre Iguodala can’t outrun time forever, Green’s long-term status is tenuous and Thompson is about to be a free agent. This could indeed be the last run of the Warriors dynasty.

Despite all of that ado, there is no reason to believe the Warriors can’t �lip the switch and march to the �inals, just like they did last year. The only potential obstacles seem to be a signi�icant injury — the team has said an ankle injury to Curry is not serious, but that situation should be monitored — or a boredom with domination so deep that they

loaf their way to a shocking upset.

With Cousins and Durant likely hoping to add a ring on their way out the door, focus shouldn’t be a problem. But �irst they will have to get there.

A preview of all eight �irst-round series shows there is plenty to watch and enjoy, even if Golden State is still “ruining” everything — and ends up the champion once again.

WESTERN CONFERENCE

No. 1 Golden State Warriors vs. No. 8 Los Angeles Clippers The Clippers (48-34) were the NBA’s most surprising team all season. The Lob City years may have been de�ined by a top-heavy roster of stars, but this group was far more anonymous and its talent stretched further along the bench. Led for most of the season by Tobias Harris, Danilo Gallinari and the bench duo of Montrezl Harrell and Lou Williams — who this season became the NBA’s career leader in points off the bench — they coasted along, winning game after game in which they were counted out.

Even the Clippers’ management did not seem to believe in them, trading Harris and Boban Marjanovic to Philadelphia in February.

The collapse that everyone predicted never happened, and the Clippers easily held off Sacramento for the West’s �inal playoff spot.

But this series is where the fun story ends. An overachieving team can be exhilarating to watch, and there were matchups where the Clippers might have surprised someone. But no matter how bored the Warriors (57-25) seemed this season, a loss in this series would overtake the 2007 We Believe Warriors’ upset of the top-seeded Dallas Mavericks as the most shocking �irst-round loss in recent history. Golden State is just too deep and too talented for the plucky Clippers to stand a chance.

Pick: Warriors in 4.

No. 2 Denver Nuggets vs.

No. 7 San Antonio Spurs Don’t let their record fool you — the Nuggets (54-28) are broken, and it doesn’t take much to �ind the date of the fracture: Jan. 15. That day, Denver, which came into the game brimming with con�idence as the No. 1 team in the West, got pulverized by the Warriors. The Nuggets allowed a record 51 �irst-quarter points and lost, 142-111.

The Nuggets went 25-14 the rest of the way — not all that different from the 29-13 record they had going into the game — but any notion that they had emerged as a true contender was of�icially scuttled. Two more losses to Golden State helped drive that point home, as did a 5-6 record over the �inal 11 games. The Nuggets barely held onto the No. 2 seed, nearly losing it to Houston on the �inal day of the season.

An optimist would point out that Denver keeping the No. 2 seed means it is uniquely positioned for a trip to the conference �inals, as its win Wednesday kept the Nuggets away from Golden State for the �irst two rounds. If the Nuggets can get past the Spurs (48-34), they would draw the winner of Portland-Oklahoma City.

Nikola Jokic is a truly special player, and will get a chance to shine on a national stage at some point, but even if the Nuggets are more talented than San Antonio, it is hard to believe that coach Gregg Popovich can’t come up with a way to exploit Denver’s weaknesses and advance in what could be one of the more closely matched series.

Pick: Spurs in 6.

No. 3 Portland Trail Blazers vs. No. 6 Oklahoma City Thunder Watching the video of the brutal leg injury sustained by Jusuf Nurkic last month is not recommended, but understanding its effect is fairly important in these playoffs. Nurkic, the Bosnian center, was in the middle of a career-de�ining season but

will now miss the playoffs.

He helped transform the Trail Blazers (53-29), from a team known for its transcendent guard combo — Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum — into a team that seemed dangerous against any opponent in the West besides Golden State.

Enes Kanter, who signed with the team in February after being bought out by the Knicks, can replace a fair amount of Nurkic’s offense and rebounding, but the defensive drop-off could hardly be more extreme.

With Nurkic, the Blazers likely would have been heavy favorites against the Thunder (49-33), but as it stands, they seem outmatched by the combination of Paul George, Steven Adams and Russell Westbrook.

Pick: Thunder in 6.

No. 4 Houston Rockets vs.

No. 5 Utah Jazz Sometimes you can win by losing. The Rockets (5329) went into the season’s �inal day with a shot at the No. 2 seed in the West, but Denver’s win left Houston at No. 4. The beauty of that, should the Rockets survive a �irst-round matchup against Rudy Gobert and the Jazz (50-32), is that it would set them up for a faceoff against Golden State in the second round, with James Harden as fresh as possible and with a far better chance of Chris Paul being healthy.

But �irst Houston will have to deal with Utah, a team that gets elite defense from Gobert — the team was the second-most ef�icient defense in the NBA, allowing 105.7 points per 100 possessions, according to Basketball Reference — and enough offense from Donovan Mitchell to stay competitive.

Pick: Rockets in 5.
