UPGRADE NEEDED Re-assess structural engineers’ capabilities, CEO chief urges By MAYA M. PADILLO

f it’s not about the building standards, it must be the skills.

This is the point City Engineers Ofice (CEO) head Atty. Joseph Dominic Felizarta is hammering on which calls for the re-assessment of the capabilities of building professionals instead of reviewing the building codes. “Siguro kumpyansa

lang ang mga structural engineers especially kay walay mga ingon ani nga intensity sa Davao so murag wala sila naniguro ug economical ra seguro kaayo ang pag design. For me no need to review the building code, ang expertise or skills lang sa structural

engineer dapat i –review,” Felizarta told Edge Davao. The proper design and construction of buildings in accordance with building codes is among the roles of structural engineers. With the recent earthquakes that damaged relatively new buildings in Davao City as compared to the old, Felizarta is more inclined on re-assessment of the skills instead of tweaking the

building standards. He added that buildings in the city now should be able to withstand an 8 magnitude quake. “Supposed to be mga intensity 8 na seguro kay ang nahibal-an sa Davao City sauna only intensity 6 and here comes PHIVOLCS reported nga niabot na ug 7.2 magnitude. It is safer na we will incorporate the intensity 8 in our construction de-

sign. Nakabutang na sa engineering terms unsaon pag compute,” he said. Felizarta added that structural engineers should now review the computations and structural analysis of the buildings particularly high-rise buildings. “For me i-review nato ang pag-compute sa atong structural analysis sa building particularly multi-story buildings. Standard man na ang

book (building code) na atong ginagamit kung unsaon pag compute sa structural integrity sa atong building such as pila nga intensity sa earthquake ang atong i-incorporate. Sa structural analysis ang building man gud naay load like wind load or dead load ug naay computations ana nga i-incorporate ang earthquake,” he explained.
